- 0:03Balance.
- 0:05Everyone talks about it as something
- 0:06we're supposed to find. As if [music]
- 0:08it's the key to everything. Some sort of
- 0:10holy grail hack for adulthood. And when
- 0:13we find it, our lives will suddenly be
- 0:15perfectly portioned out. So, enough
- 0:17about that. How's work going?
- 0:20Um
- 0:22it's going.
- 0:24Anyway,
- 0:25I'll see you in 2 weeks. Yep. Bye.
- 0:29The thing is, the more I strive for it,
- 0:32the more I question
- 0:34>> [music]
- 0:34>> if it even exists.
- 0:42As you might know, if you've been
- 0:43following along, [music]
- 0:44I have been on a mission of sorts. I've
- 0:47started this list over [music] here to
- 0:49see what I can get done by the end of my
- 0:5120s, which is
- 0:53coming up really soon. While there was a
- 0:54bit of a slow start and a few things
- 0:56that threw me for a loop,
- 0:58I also have a few updates to catch you
- 1:00up to speed on.
- 1:02Take more photos.
- 1:04As much as I love it, never been
- 1:05consistent until now. A tangible thing
- 1:08and a form of documenting my life after
- 1:09all.
- 1:10Mission complete. Next, find a perfect
- 1:13daily routine.
- 1:15Okay, so maybe not perfect. I still have
- 1:17to drag myself out of bed, but it's
- 1:19better than it's been in recent years.
- 1:21And finally, get back into journaling.
- 1:24Used to do it a lot, took a break, and
- 1:26clearly I must be going through it since
- 1:28it was probably the easiest to cross
- 1:30off. But [music] despite me doing all of
- 1:32these things, which have been great for
- 1:33the list, things have been piling up on
- 1:36[music] the other end.
- 1:38The work end. Turns out you can't just
- 1:40drop everything and pursue your whimsy
- 1:41activities without throwing your whole
- 1:43life out of balance. With that being
- 1:44said,
- 1:46it's time for the next activity.
- 1:50Part of the reason why I made my 20s
- 1:52list was because my life felt totally
- 1:54out of balance. A couple of years ago, I
- 1:56turned my hobby into work, which while
- 1:58amazing, I think it's important to have
- 2:00a hobby that doesn't necessarily relate
- 2:02to your job. [music] And I tried a
- 2:03couple of things, even rock climbing
- 2:05that one time, but I never really
- 2:06committed to it. So, this time around,
- 2:08one of the things on my list was to find
- 2:10[music] a new hobby. Something a bit
- 2:12better suited for me, a bit less intense
- 2:15maybe, especially after the first few
- 2:16tasks. No productivity, no pressure,
- 2:19just [music] simply a hobby. So, I
- 2:20researched a couple of things for me to
- 2:22give a try.
- 2:37>> [music]
- 2:42>> I heard this concept recently, open
- 2:44loops. It's something you told yourself
- 2:45you would do, but haven't finished yet.
- 2:49I imagine it [music] like this. Say
- 2:50you're in line for a roller coaster, but
- 2:52instead of getting on the ride, you just
- 2:54go and line up for a different one.
- 2:56>> [music]
- 2:56>> Soon you're in line at several coasters,
- 2:58but never having the satisfaction of
- 3:00seeing one through.
- 3:03Open loops feel like that. The tasks can
- 3:05be something big,
- 3:06>> [music]
- 3:06>> like a project you set out to do, or
- 3:09small,
- 3:10like answering a text. Even the goals
- 3:12you set for yourself, the things you
- 3:13want to be excited about, but your brain
- 3:15keeps them running in the background
- 3:17nonetheless. And depending on the
- 3:18timeline we set for ourselves, [music]
- 3:20we either get them done and we feel
- 3:21great, or it builds up and eventually
- 3:23weighs down on us.
- 3:25What I'm trying [music] to say is that I
- 3:26feel like I have so many open loops that
- 3:28I want to close, but it feels like every
- 3:30task takes away from another.
- 3:32It seems easier to avoid it altogether,
- 3:34but closing even one of those loops can
- 3:36feel [music] like a tiny reprieve, even
- 3:38if temporary.
- 3:41So, I'm trying air clay. Basically, it's
- 3:43like pottery at home. You don't have to
- 3:45fire it, you just kind of let it air
- 3:47dry, and then you can paint it. So,
- 3:50right now,
- 3:52I am Okay, trust the vision, first of
- 3:54all, but I am making a trinket tray. I
- 3:58need more trinket trays in my life. I
- 4:00have a lot of trinkets and not enough
- 4:02trays. I ordered a kit just cuz it had
- 4:05everything in it to make it easier, and
- 4:07it actually comes with instructions. As
- 4:10you can see, it's still like
- 4:12it's not blended. This is very cool.
- 4:14They give you a sponge and everything.
- 4:17Not sponsored. It's very messy, but I
- 4:19guess that's Well, that's the crafting
- 4:21though. It's feeling like actual pottery
- 4:23right now. It's coming together. Oh my
- 4:25gosh. Oh my gosh. Wait, wait, wait. It's
- 4:28crazy right now. Hold on. Honestly,
- 4:30using your hands is so much more
- 4:31effective than the sponge. That was fun.
- 4:34It's my first time trying air clay, so
- 4:36maybe I'll just make a couple more
- 4:37because I have some extra clay, and then
- 4:40I'll let it dry cuz apparently I'm
- 4:42supposed to let it dry for like 24
- 4:44hours. I'm going to call Colt.
- 4:47Oh, hi. Wow. Is it done?
- 4:51No, it's not done.
- 4:53>> Wow, good job. You're a star.
- 5:13>> [singing and music]
- 5:18[singing and music]
- 5:21>> I am trying out
- 5:24stained glass. DIY [music] stained
- 5:26glass. I thought this would be a perfect
- 5:28opportunity to try it. I'm taping my
- 5:30designs. I originally thought I could
- 5:33freehand it. Then I started to do a bit
- 5:35of research and I realized that I
- 5:37shouldn't freehand it because it won't
- 5:40be a good idea.
- 5:42It would not be a wise choice. Let's
- 5:45[music] just say that.
- 5:48Okay, wait. That's kind of cute.
- 5:50Look at that. She's a little bumpy,
- 5:54little messy, but that's okay.
- 5:57There's no way I could be a cake
- 5:58decorator.
- 6:01Like there's literally no way. Tattoo
- 6:03artist or cake decorator, forget about
- 6:06[music] it.
- 6:11>> [singing]
- 6:16>> All right. So, I just locked in for like
- 6:18I don't even know how long, and I got
- 6:21the front done, minus this. I haven't
- 6:24done the roof yet. It's a good DIY.
- 6:27It's a good activity. Like to me, a
- 6:29hobby is something that maybe ideally I
- 6:32could use to wind down. I don't know if
- 6:35this is necessarily a
- 6:37relaxing hobby. Like I feel very
- 6:39goal-oriented right now. Like I'm like,
- 6:41"Oh,
- 6:42need to finish this." versus I feel like
- 6:44maybe what I'm looking for is just like
- 6:46a peaceful
- 6:48thing.
- 6:58Do you have a steady hand? I got a hobby
- 7:00for you. Unfortunately,
- 7:03that is not me. That's why all my
- 7:04stuff's on a tripod. I'm scared
- 7:07to even touch it. It's late and I'm
- 7:10tired.
- 7:10>> [clears throat]
- 7:16[music]
- 7:22[music]
- 7:24[singing]
- 7:29[music]
- 7:36[music]
- 7:37[singing]
- 7:43>> After a couple of days of trying out
- 7:44these hobby contenders, I've been
- 7:46[music] having a good time, but not sure
- 7:47if I found the one just yet. But I've
- 7:50also been trying to catch up on other
- 7:51things.
- 7:53In our late 20s, there's this pressure
- 7:54[music] of needing and also wanting to
- 7:56do everything. To have a social life, be
- 7:59a good friend, a good partner, present
- 8:01for family, to have hobbies, to work
- 8:03out, to have a routine, and also good
- 8:06paying job,
- 8:07but still somehow follow your passions
- 8:09and figure [music] out your career.
- 8:12And despite the tenacity, or even
- 8:14compromising when we don't want to,
- 8:16it's frustrating to repeatedly miss the
- 8:18mark.
- 8:22>> [music]
- 8:25>> Balance is a paradox.
- 8:27Why is it that the more we strive for
- 8:28it, [music] the less it feels like
- 8:29peace, and the more it feels like
- 8:31pressure? It feels like there's never
- 8:32enough time to do everything you need to
- 8:34do, [music] let alone everything you
- 8:36want to do.
- 8:39And I'm wondering if there's another way
- 8:40to go about it.
- 8:43>> [music]
- 8:51>> Eventually, [music] unfinished things
- 8:53stop just being unfinished things. They
- 8:56turn into statements about who you think
- 8:58you are.
- 9:01Even now, somewhere in all of this, the
- 9:03[music] things meant to motivate me
- 9:05start to feel more like evidence that
- 9:07I'm falling behind.
- 9:10I think the experts [music] would say
- 9:12maybe we're getting balance all wrong.
- 9:14Maybe it isn't about perfectly
- 9:15portioning out our lives.
- 9:19Maybe it's about letting the scales tip
- 9:21intentionally, [music]
- 9:22letting ourselves be all in when it
- 9:23matters,
- 9:24and all out when it doesn't.
- 9:27I think being this [music] close to the
- 9:29end of my 20s, mostly I just wanted to
- 9:31prove that I could follow through on a
- 9:33promise I made [music] to myself.
- 9:36And I think making this list was a way
- 9:38for me to try and prove myself wrong.
- 9:41That I wasn't someone who didn't follow
- 9:42through.
- 9:45But I proved myself right.
- 9:48>> [music]
- 9:55>> I don't really [music and singing] want
- 9:56to miss
- 9:59all the potentiality.
- 10:02>> [music]
- 10:04>> Most of all the days we never got to
- 10:06live,
- 10:08they are
- 10:09>> [singing]
- 10:09>> so
- 10:10real
- 10:11to me.
