  8. 0:16We're inside the stomach.
  9. 0:17>> The stomach is a J-shaped muscular organ
  10. 0:19that digests food.
  11. 0:21>> What is its first [music] job?
  12. 0:23>> The stomach stores the food you eat.
  13. 0:25After you eat, food usually stays here
  14. 0:28for about 2 to 4 hours.
  15. 0:30The exact time depends on the kind of
  16. 0:32food you ate, how much you ate, and a
  17. 0:34few other things.
  18. 0:35>> So, the stomach is like a waiting room
  19. 0:37for food.
  20. 0:38>> That's right.
  21. 0:39>> What's the second job?
  22. 0:40>> Strong stomach muscles squeeze, churn,
  23. 0:43and stir the food, almost like a washing
  24. 0:45machine.
  25. 0:48>> So, the food gets crushed and mixed
  26. 0:50together?
  27. 0:51>> Exactly. The solid food is broken to
  28. 0:54smaller pieces and mixed until it
  29. 0:55becomes soft.
  30. 0:58>> Is that all?
  31. 0:59>> Nope. The stomach also adds special
  32. 1:01digestive [music] juices.
  33. 1:03>> What kind of juices?
  34. 1:04>> It releases stomach acid, which helps
  35. 1:07break down food and kills many harmful
  36. 1:10germs. It also releases digestive
  37. 1:12enzymes, like pepsin, [music] which
  38. 1:15begin breaking down proteins found in
  39. 1:17foods like meat, eggs, and beans.
  40. 1:20>> Wow! The stomach is working really hard.
  41. 1:24>> It sure is. The food turns into a thick,
  42. 1:27soupy mixture called [music] chyme.
  43. 1:30>> What's the third job?
  44. 1:32>> At the bottom of the stomach is a small
  45. 1:34valve. It opens a little at a time and
  46. 1:37lets the chyme move into the small
  47. 1:39intestine.
  48. 1:40>> Wow! The stomach really is amazing.
  49. 1:42>> It sure is. It stores food, mixes and
  50. 1:45breaks it down, makes chyme, and sends
  51. 1:47it safely to the small intestine.
  52. 1:49>> Come on! Let's continue our adventure to
  53. 1:52the small intestine. See you there.
  54. 1:58We learned how amazing the stomach is,
  55. 2:01but how can we take good care of it?
  56. 2:03>> There are some easy things we can do.
  57. 2:05Eat a variety of healthy foods like
  58. 2:07fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and
  59. 2:09proteins. [music] And remember to eat
  60. 2:11slowly and chew your food well.
  61. 2:14Drink plenty of water throughout the
  62. 2:15day.
  63. 2:18And try not [music] to eat too much at
  64. 2:19once. Give your stomach time to do its
  65. 2:21job.
  66. 2:23We should also stay active and get
  67. 2:25enough sleep.
