  6. 0:06CHRISTI: It's our annual Dance Company Showcase.
  7. 0:08[applause]
  8. 0:10ABBY: What is she doing?
  9. 0:11She changed the dance.
  10. 0:12KELLY: If she wanted to do a solo
  11. 0:14she should have just did it.
  12. 0:15Because none of us wanted to do the stupid dance, anyways.
  13. 0:17CASTING AGENT: Maddie is a star.
  14. 0:18Come with me, Maddie.
  15. 0:20CHRISTI: The whole Broadway casting agent thing
  16. 0:22was total bull [bleep].
  17. 0:24ABBY (VOICEOVER): Coming up on "Dance Moms"--
  18. 0:26We are going to Starpower.
  19. 0:28This is the last regional to qualify for their nationals.
  20. 0:32Oh, my god.
  21. 0:33My grandmother just got rushed to the hospital.
  22. 0:35My grandma got bad, overnight. (CRYING)
  23. 0:37I don't know if I should go.
  24. 0:39KELLY: Brooke's costume is awful.
  25. 0:41CATHY: Brooke is now wearing Vivi's top.
  26. 0:43I'm not happy.
  27. 0:44I don't want Brooke wearing the costume.
  28. 0:46I don't approve.
  29. 0:47My daughter is dancing in three minutes.
  30. 0:48Well, I'm sorry.
  31. 0:49KELLY: And you're taking the costumer off of her back.
  32. 0:50I know. It doesn't fit her!
  33. 0:51- Go back to your studio. - You know what?
  34. 0:52I'm not.
  35. 0:53I'm here to stay, so like it.
  36. 0:55[theme music]
  37. 0:57(SINGING) Get up.
  38. 0:59Get on the floor.
  39. 1:01My world is with my girls, living on the dance floor.
  40. 1:07[music playing]
  41. 1:09ABBY: I want to talk about this upcoming weekend.
  42. 1:11It's regionals.
  43. 1:13Everybody knows how important that is.
  44. 1:15We are going to Starpower.
  45. 1:18You know that's one of the toughest competitions
  46. 1:20out there.
  47. 1:21This week is make or break for nationals.
  48. 1:22We've worked for months to get to this point, right now.
  49. 1:26This is what's going to happen for this next weekend.
  50. 1:29Maddie, new solo.
  51. 1:31Brooke, new solo.
  52. 1:32Chloe, new solo.
  53. 1:35Now--
  54. 1:37HOLLY: Once again, here we are.
  55. 1:39Nia is never picked for a solo.
  56. 1:41I'm losing confidence in Abby because she doesn't believe
  57. 1:44in my kid.
  58. 1:45ABBY: The age categories are a little different,
  59. 1:47so we want to make sure that your dance is about you,
  60. 1:50a dancer now, not the beginning of the season.
  61. 1:52Every competition's age category is different.
  62. 1:55Usually, Chloe and Maddie end up in the same age group
  63. 1:57because they're only a year apart.
  64. 1:59But this time, at Starpower, Chloe is in the nine to 11
  65. 2:02age category and Maddie is in the eight and under.
  66. 2:05Chloe deserves a chance to win without the shadow of Maddie
  67. 2:08hovering over her.
  68. 2:09We are doing a new group routine this weekend
  69. 2:11and everybody is in it, the entire cast.
  70. 2:15It is called "Where Have All the Children Gone."
  71. 2:21This is a routine about children who become missing.
  72. 2:24You've all seen the children's faces on the milk cartons.
  73. 2:27It's contemporary, it's mature, and it is very dark.
  74. 2:30You have to be great actresses to pull it off.
  75. 2:33And they're all in white, like they're angels.
  76. 2:37I don't want any discrepancies.
  77. 2:40I don't want any opinions.
  78. 2:42"Where Have All the Children Gone"
  79. 2:43is one of those routines that simple and clean,
  80. 2:47but it tells a story.
  81. 2:49It makes you think.
  82. 2:50And that's what people are looking
  83. 2:52for in an overall high score winning number.
  84. 2:54This is a big regionals for us, and I want them to do something
  85. 2:58that nobody's ever seen before.
  86. 3:00I want to change it up.
  87. 3:01And I don't think any of the moms
  88. 3:02would dare say anything to me.
  89. 3:04Moms, I'm going to go ahead and dismiss you now.
  90. 3:06We have lots of work to do.
  91. 3:08Girls, up. Let's get moving.
  92. 3:09Let's get moving.
  93. 3:10Come on. Let's go.
  94. 3:11Let's go.
  95. 3:11Let's go.
  96. 3:12Let's go.
  97. 3:13[music playing]
  98. 3:17MAN: (WHISPERING) All the children once running around
  99. 3:20have evacuated.
  100. 3:22Where have all the children gone?
  101. 3:27ABBY: "Where Have All the Children Gone"
  102. 3:28is a very haunting, dark piece of music.
  103. 3:31When you're out of competition, the dancers
  104. 3:34that everybody's talking about the next day, or the pieces,
  105. 3:37are the ones that told the story--
  106. 3:39the kids that could act as well as dance, the choreographers
  107. 3:43that made you think about something,
  108. 3:45that made you feel something.
  109. 3:46And that's what "Where Have All the Children Gone" does
  110. 3:49to people.
  111. 3:51MAN: (WHISPERING) This is just a dream.
  112. 3:54The original concept is about children that
  113. 3:57have gone missing, so the kids on the milk carton, the kids
  114. 4:01in the news every night.
  115. 4:02But I put a little edge to it as to maybe there
  116. 4:05was some bullying involved and it was causing other children
  117. 4:09to commit suicide.
  118. 4:11That's what the story is about.
  119. 4:12MAN: (WHISPERING) We hope they're hiding.
  120. 4:16To be honest, I don't really know what the meaning of "Where
  121. 4:20Have All the Children Gone."
  122. 4:21But Miss Abby said we're giving the message to parents
  123. 4:24that this has still been happening
  124. 4:27and you should be safe.
  125. 4:30But it really like it.
  126. 4:32It's really cool and creepy and awesome.
  127. 4:34MAN: (WHISPERING) Where have all the children gone?
  128. 4:39I love dark stuff because I do dark stuff.
  129. 4:42And I even did a missing child thing.
  130. 4:44But I don't think that this is age appropriate for Mackenzie
  131. 4:47and Vivi, at all. I'm sorry.
  132. 4:48CHRISTI: I'm surprised. I'm surprised at this.
  133. 4:50Yeah.
  134. 4:51I'm-- I'm not happy about that, at all.
  135. 4:52KELLY: It is very disturbing song.
  136. 4:54My kids are fine with it being dark music.
  137. 4:56I don't even think they really listen
  138. 4:58to the words of whether the costume or the music--
  139. 5:00I mean, it's just, that's the art of it.
  140. 5:03CHRISTI: I really worry that this number may be
  141. 5:05too heavy for girls this age.
  142. 5:07It might be too depressing, not only for the audience
  143. 5:10but for the judges, as well.
  144. 5:11HOLLY: To me, it's about child abduction.
  145. 5:13Is a message that I know, for Nia, makes her very sad.
  146. 5:18And I'm a little uncomfortable with it.
  147. 5:21Come in close.
  148. 5:21Listen to me.
  149. 5:23You're dancing.
  150. 5:23You're doing steps.
  151. 5:24You're trying to listen to the words.
  152. 5:26You're not interpreting the story correctly.
  153. 5:29And this is very serious because maybe people in the audience
  154. 5:32have had a child that's gone missing,
  155. 5:35so you're going to touch somebody's heart.
  156. 5:37So this has to be a very serious routine.
  157. 5:39And right now you're just doing the steps.
  158. 5:42And we need to get past that, and we need to perform.
  159. 5:45Do you two understand?
  160. 5:47It's very serious.
  161. 5:48I am an artist.
  162. 5:50And when it comes to complicated choreography, the children who
  163. 5:53are the dancers--
  164. 5:54they need to become artists, as well.
  165. 5:57And I want to teach them to convey the story
  166. 6:01with their emotional execution, as well as their dance
  167. 6:04technique.
  168. 6:06CHRISTI: So guess what tomorrow is?
  169. 6:10Kelly's going to be 40!
  170. 6:12[laughs]
  171. 6:12[cheering]
  172. 6:15Lordy, lordy, look who's 40!
  173. 6:17I don't quite know how I feel turning 40.
  174. 6:19I mean, I'm excited.
  175. 6:21I think it's a new chapter of my life.
  176. 6:22But then, when I think about, it I think, oh, I'm so old.
  177. 6:25CHRISTI: I have something planned.
  178. 6:26We're going to go to your house.
  179. 6:27I'm going to bring some goodies and some cocktails and--
  180. 6:30Aye, aye,
  181. 6:31--no babies.
  182. 6:32I think that what you guys should do tomorrow
  183. 6:34is go get Botox.
  184. 6:36Anybody who's 40--
  185. 6:37CHRISTI: Oh, I love it! Yes!
  186. 6:38Yes!
  187. 6:38Do I look that old?
  188. 6:39CATHY: Anybody-- well, right here--
  189. 6:42anybody who's 40 needs to--
  190. 6:43CHRISTI: Yes!
  191. 6:44CATHY: --start to think about that.
  192. 6:45KELLY: How rude!
  193. 6:46CATHY: You could start to get it underneath here because it'll
  194. 6:48kind of, like--
  195. 6:49I don't know why Cathy is so insecure.
  196. 6:50It might be because she is older.
  197. 6:52I mean, I think-- doing the math,
  198. 6:53I think Cathy may be old enough to be my mother.
  199. 6:55Well, I didn't think I was that bad.
  200. 6:58HOLLY: I like my wrinkles.
  201. 6:59They add character.
  202. 7:00KELLY: Good for you, Miss Holly.
  203. 7:01[interposing voices]
  204. 7:03KELLY: I thought I liked myself, too,
  205. 7:04but obviously Cathy doesn't.
  206. 7:06[laughter]
  207. 7:07CATHY: Kelly is 40 and fabulous, for sure.
  208. 7:09But she needs to start to really think about some high end
  209. 7:13maintenance.
  210. 7:14I'm only 34.
  211. 7:15Do you think I need it?
  212. 7:16CATHY: Oh, yes. Yes.
  213. 7:18That's where my personality happens, up here, because I'm
  214. 7:20always making faces at people. KELLY: Yeah.
  215. 7:21I ask you a question-- CATHY: And you know what?
  216. 7:22Nobody wants to have those frown lines.
  217. 7:24KELLY: I think she's trying to tell me something.
  218. 7:26CATHY: Christie is a lot younger than all of us.
  219. 7:28And, honestly, she has furrows so deep in her brow
  220. 7:32that, honest to gosh, we could plant seeds in it
  221. 7:34and she could have a little bouquet there if we had to.
  222. 7:36You've got the opportunity to look better and look younger.
  223. 7:38CHRISTI: Yeah, I agree. - Why not take advantage of it?
  224. 7:41I'm in.
  225. 7:42I think we should do it.
  226. 7:43MELISSA: No.
  227. 7:44They're doing gym.
  228. 7:46You know, I want-- I want Mackenzie to have fun.
  229. 7:47CATHY: You won't be smiling around them all.
  230. 7:48Excuse me. I'll be back.
  231. 7:49You'll be down stage.
  232. 7:50HOLLY: I was incredibly frustrated after chalkboard.
  233. 7:52I want the best for my daughter.
  234. 7:54I want her to shine and have the same opportunities as the rest
  235. 7:56of the girls.
  236. 7:57Once again, Nia has been passed over for a solo.
  237. 8:00And I'm angry, I'm frustrated, and I'm really disappointed.
  238. 8:03I'm really sick of it. ABBY: I want group two.
  239. 8:05Can we speak for one second? ABBY: OK.
  240. 8:07Really quickly.
  241. 8:09How come Nia doesn't have a chance to do her solo?
  242. 8:13She's not being stretched. Because, as you said, like--
  243. 8:15Well, no. No, no, no.
  244. 8:16No, no, no.
  245. 8:17--the more exposure-- and the thing is,
  246. 8:18I don't want Nia to get to the point where she thinks, oh,
  247. 8:20I'm settling.
  248. 8:21Oh, it's good I only do two group numbers.
  249. 8:23ABBY: All these moms want their kid to be in the spotlight,
  250. 8:25but it's just not that easy.
  251. 8:26It doesn't work that way.
  252. 8:27Not everybody can be in the spotlight.
  253. 8:29You have to have the talent.
  254. 8:31And some have it and some don't.
  255. 8:33I want her to feel successful.
  256. 8:34I want her to feel wanted.
  257. 8:36I want you in there with her private lessons.
  258. 8:37I told you that several weeks ago.
  259. 8:39It's the ballet technique.
  260. 8:40So it's over and over and over and Nia, come on!
  261. 8:43Wake up! What are you doing?
  262. 8:45HOLLY: And it's frustrating because she doesn't hear me.
  263. 8:47I feel like I'm not being heard, and she just
  264. 8:48gives me whatever answers that are hollow.
  265. 8:52They-- they don't have any meaning to them.
  266. 8:54She's just trying to shut me up.
  267. 8:55ABBY: It's not about how many dances is this kid in
  268. 8:57and how many is that, and how much is this person paying
  269. 8:59and how much is that--
  270. 9:00really, Holly, that has very little to do with it.
  271. 9:03I don't want you coming back in and saying--
  272. 9:04I don't. ABBY: --you're too tough on her.
  273. 9:05I don't. ABBY: I want her to know--
  274. 9:06duet, trio, is it worth doing the--
  275. 9:09putting the time and the energy in.
  276. 9:11I want to see action.
  277. 9:13Words are lovely, but I want to see action.
  278. 9:15I want to see some type of commitment to Nia.
  279. 9:18Whatever will get her to that winning place is what--
  280. 9:20- OK. - Exactly.
  281. 9:21That's what we need. - All right.
  282. 9:22Nia is a good dancer.
  283. 9:24But is she great?
  284. 9:25Not yet.
  285. 9:26These moms think that everything should be fair,
  286. 9:28but it's not fair.
  287. 9:30Life isn't fair.
  288. 9:31Every competition has different rules, different age
  289. 9:33categories, and I want to put the kids
  290. 9:36in that are going to win.
  291. 9:43[music playing]
  292. 9:46KELLY: We're coming today to get injections for our wrinkles,
  293. 9:49because Cathy seemed to think that Christi and I needed
  294. 9:52some improvements.
  295. 9:53And since it was my 40th birthday,
  296. 9:55we decided that we would come and do it today.
  297. 9:57Here we go.
  298. 9:58Kind of-- it looks like a dentist's office.
  299. 10:00Oh!
  300. 10:01Well, I'm not a big fan of the dentist, either.
  301. 10:02Ew!
  302. 10:03I don't like the way it looks.
  303. 10:04[gasps] - Oh, my god.
  304. 10:05Look at those needles.
  305. 10:06Oh, I'm scared!
  306. 10:08Yeah, I'm very nervous.
  307. 10:09I'm afraid of side effects, like they say you can have droopy
  308. 10:12eyelid and things like that.
  309. 10:14And I'm just hoping that everything turns out OK.
  310. 10:17TECHNICIAN: Just take a deep breath.
  311. 10:18Relax.
  312. 10:20CHRISTI: This is where we needed cocktails.
  313. 10:22Kelly, you're so brave.
  314. 10:24Oh, Kelly.
  315. 10:25I'm nervous, guys!
  316. 10:28MELISSA: Oh, it's going to be easy.
  317. 10:29TECHNICIAN: Go ahead and frown.
  318. 10:31Frown, frown, frown.
  319. 10:32It's going to be three quick pinches.
  320. 10:34You OK?
  321. 10:36CATHY: That was quick!
  322. 10:38Did it hurt?
  323. 10:39Not at lot--
  324. 10:40like a bee sting.
  325. 10:41Oh, in my face.
  326. 10:43KELLY: If I could handle it--
  327. 10:44[laughs] Kelly went first.
  328. 10:46And as I'm watching her, I'm starting to panic because it
  329. 10:48looks very painful.
  330. 10:49They're going to stick needles in my face.
  331. 10:51I don't like needles in my arm, let alone in my face.
  332. 10:54She has tons of wrinkles for being only 34.
  333. 10:57She really needs help.
  334. 10:58KELLY: You have tons.
  335. 11:00I have these lines, here.
  336. 11:02I guess I scowl a lot and I raise my eyebrows.
  337. 11:05And, you know, it's just kind of part of my-- my personality.
  338. 11:07But everybody always thinks I'm mad.
  339. 11:09I'm really not.
  340. 11:10So I guess I have mean eyes. TECHNICIAN: A little pinch.
  341. 11:12Ready?
  342. 11:13Right between the brows, here.
  343. 11:17KELLY: A lot of those wrinkles. Yeah.
  344. 11:18It's not too bad, huh?
  345. 11:19I can't believe how fast it is.
  346. 11:20- I know. - Yeah.
  347. 11:21That's why people do it on their lunch hour.
  348. 11:23I'll be back tomorrow.
  349. 11:24It didn't really even hurt.
  350. 11:25I think it hurts more to get your ears pierced.
  351. 11:28I was happily surprised.
  352. 11:29So a couple little pricks and off we go.
  353. 11:32[laughs] I'm afraid I'm losing my mind.
  354. 11:36KELLY: Oh, that was great.
  355. 11:37CHRISTI: How exciting!
  356. 11:39Good morning, ladies.
  357. 11:40Good morning!
  358. 11:41Everybody ready to go?
  359. 11:43This is regionals.
  360. 11:43You know how important it is.
  361. 11:45All of the experience the kids have had competing weekend
  362. 11:48after weekend is all leading up to this point.
  363. 11:51So we want to go to Providence, we
  364. 11:54want to put our best foot forward and come out on top.
  365. 11:57Today counts.
  366. 11:58[music playing]
  367. 12:04Sauté and coupé, chainés and push, push!
  368. 12:08For regionals, Maddie is doing a routine
  369. 12:10to the music "Beautiful."
  370. 12:12It's a lyrical, contemporary piece--
  371. 12:15turns, jumps, leaps-- what she does best.
  372. 12:18[music playing]
  373. 12:20Get off the floor on that coupé.
  374. 12:24MADDIE: I always win first too because I work really hard
  375. 12:27in classes.
  376. 12:29And I'm usually against, like, seven-year-olds.
  377. 12:32There's a lot of times when I get bumped up
  378. 12:34and I still get first place, so I don't really get worried.
  379. 12:38Every week you have a new routine.
  380. 12:41Yes?
  381. 12:42What-- what do you think the judges are looking for?
  382. 12:45Technique.
  383. 12:46Right.
  384. 12:47And technique means all the hours you spend in ballet
  385. 12:49class, every plié, every relevé, you need to rely
  386. 12:53on your technique.
  387. 12:54Yes?
  388. 12:55Any questions?
  389. 12:55No?
  390. 12:56Anything you want to go over?
  391. 12:58It's good?
  392. 12:59OK.
  393. 13:00See you on stage.
  394. 13:01[music playing]
  395. 13:02Here we go!
  396. 13:03Scoot, scoot, scoot!
  397. 13:06ABBY: Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da.
  398. 13:08And a one, two, three, four and five and six and seven, eight--
  399. 13:15CHLOE: I'm doing a new solo this week called "Parlez Moi."
  400. 13:17And it's a little cute French dance and uses personality.
  401. 13:20And I really like it.
  402. 13:23One, two, three, four, five.
  403. 13:27I'm super nervous.
  404. 13:28This is a new solo, and I want to win first
  405. 13:31so that I can go to nationals.
  406. 13:32ABBY: Up, down, down.
  407. 13:35Up, up, down, down.
  408. 13:37Look at my baby girl!
  409. 13:39Hello!
  410. 13:41Baby!
  411. 13:42How's the baby girl?
  412. 13:44Hello!
  413. 13:45Did you get a haircut?
  414. 13:47Did you get a haircut?
  415. 13:48I heard!
  416. 13:49Broadway Baby is my dog.
  417. 13:50Hello!
  418. 13:51Hello, hello, hello!
  419. 13:54She is the best thing in my life.
  420. 13:57She doesn't roll her eyes at me.
  421. 13:58She is wonderful, absolutely wonderful.
  422. 14:02All the way around, go.
  423. 14:04That's fine.
  424. 14:08[music playing]
  425. 14:12KELLY: After we got Botox, Cathy and Christi
  426. 14:14and I went to have lunch down the street.
  427. 14:16It was fun. - Mm-hmm.
  428. 14:17I feel bad that you didn't get it done, though.
  429. 14:19- I didn't need it, girls. - [laughs]
  430. 14:20But we sure did, didn't we, Cathy?
  431. 14:21CATHY: You sure did, that's right.
  432. 14:23KELLY: Yeah.
  433. 14:24Never had any intentions of getting Botox until we met her.
  434. 14:26Yeah.
  435. 14:27But I can tell you right now, you
  436. 14:28are going to be junkies with it.
  437. 14:29So you're good. - I better keep getting Botox.
  438. 14:31[laughs]
  439. 14:32I don't want anybody to think I'm Chloe's grandma.
  440. 14:33[laughs]
  441. 14:34CATHY: That's right.
  442. 14:36And with that nose of yours--
  443. 14:37[laughter]
  444. 14:42Cathy kept telling me all the other cosmetic procedures
  445. 14:44I needed, like I needed a nose job.
  446. 14:46Thank you, Cathy.
  447. 14:47I'm quite comfortable with the way I look.
  448. 14:49She was acting like a junior high girl.
  449. 14:50And, you know, for somebody of that age,
  450. 14:52you'd think she would have grown up by now.
  451. 14:54Do you guys golf?
  452. 14:55- I used to be in a golf league. - Oh, my god.
  453. 14:57What?
  454. 14:58Oh, my god.
  455. 14:59What?
  456. 15:01My grandmother just got rushed to the hospital, again.
  457. 15:05During lunch, I got a text message
  458. 15:07that my grandmother was taken back to the hospital, again.
  459. 15:10CATHY: What's going on with her?
  460. 15:11Has she had problems?
  461. 15:13Yeah.
  462. 15:14She's-- she's 87 and she has, like,
  463. 15:18COPD and congestive heart failure.
  464. 15:21CATHY: Oh, god.
  465. 15:22I am very close to her, and I was very close
  466. 15:24to my grandfather, as well.
  467. 15:25So when you get that news it's not the same as somebody
  468. 15:27saying, like, oh, your grandmother is sick.
  469. 15:29It very much is--
  470. 15:30it's my mother.
  471. 15:32She'll be fine.
  472. 15:33Why is she like your mom?
  473. 15:35I-- I don't have a good relationship with my mother.
  474. 15:38My mother had me when she was very young.
  475. 15:41And my grandparents were my parents, more or less.
  476. 15:45You may just have to go-- go to her instead of your other
  477. 15:49obligations at the dance studio.
  478. 15:50Yeah.
  479. 15:52Going in the hospital is not uncommon for her.
  480. 15:54But something about this one felt a little different.
  481. 15:57But I got to run. I got to go.
  482. 16:06[music playing]
  483. 16:08CHRISTI: My grandmother is sick and she's in the hospital.
  484. 16:10It's very hard.
  485. 16:11I'm very, very close with her.
  486. 16:13She's been the most important mother figure that I've had.
  487. 16:16She's amazing.
  488. 16:17Thanks for coming with me there, kiddo.
  489. 16:19CHLOE: No problem.
  490. 16:20CHRISTI: When I was a little girl,
  491. 16:22I dreamed of taking dance lessons.
  492. 16:23And I lived with my grandparents.
  493. 16:26I moved back and forth, on and off,
  494. 16:27and I really want Chloe to go to the house where I grew up in,
  495. 16:31where I danced on the lawn and I dreamed of having a life
  496. 16:35like she does.
  497. 16:36I'm excited to bring you here.
  498. 16:37This is the base.
  499. 16:41Yeah.
  500. 16:42My house is right here, but that's not
  501. 16:44what my house looked like.
  502. 16:46I used to make Jody, my little sister,
  503. 16:48do recitals in the front yard all the time.
  504. 16:50We used to go like this. Wait.
  505. 16:52You ready? Come in.
  506. 16:53And I used to go--
  507. 16:54I'm going to spin you out and spin you back in.
  508. 16:57[laughs] My poor sister.
  509. 17:00And then I used to try to do this crazy lift.
  510. 17:02Here, jump up.
  511. 17:03You ready?
  512. 17:03[laughter]
  513. 17:05Oh, we almost got it!
  514. 17:07Stop!
  515. 17:08You're showing the neighborhood my Spanx.
  516. 17:10Go ahead, get in the car.
  517. 17:12It's so important for me to have Chloe have an opportunity
  518. 17:15to shine and show what she can do, what she's worked hard for.
  519. 17:19And every competition is a chance for her to do that.
  520. 17:23Although I didn't have all those same opportunities that Chloe
  521. 17:26had, my grandparents were able to give me
  522. 17:29something that my mother didn't, and that
  523. 17:30was unconditional love.
  524. 17:38[music playing]
  525. 17:39ABBY: Right, left, turn.
  526. 17:42Push!
  527. 17:47This week, for, regionals I'm doing a solo called
  528. 17:50"Supermodel."
  529. 17:51And it's an acrobatic and contortion number.
  530. 17:53ABBY: Don't run out of steam.
  531. 17:55Breathe.
  532. 17:56If I win regionals, then I qualify for nationals.
  533. 17:58And that's what we've been aiming for all season.
  534. 18:04[music playing]
  535. 18:06You ran, you ran, and you stop.
  536. 18:08And you're like, ooh!
  537. 18:09Give me a hand.
  538. 18:10Give me a fish.
  539. 18:11Ooh!
  540. 18:12"Where Have All the Children Gone"
  541. 18:14is a very haunting, dark piece of music.
  542. 18:17And I love to use stuff like that.
  543. 18:19At some competitions you'll see a lot of dark things,
  544. 18:21and in others it's your typical upbeat, fun, tap, jazz
  545. 18:25whatever.
  546. 18:26So I try to get my kids to do everything.
  547. 18:28Ooh, like you're trying to grasp on to stay alive.
  548. 18:32We already know that they can jump and kick and leap
  549. 18:34and turn. That's not in question.
  550. 18:36But can they convey this story to the audience--
  551. 18:39a story which some of them don't even understand.
  552. 18:42Paige, figure where you're supposed to be.
  553. 18:47PAIGE: I think "Where Have All the Children Gone"
  554. 18:49could win because it's a good number.
  555. 18:53And we normally don't do scary numbers like that.
  556. 18:56We normally do more numbers with face and personality.
  557. 19:00Where have all the children gone?
  558. 19:05[music playing]
  559. 19:08MELISSA: Happy birthday!
  560. 19:09KELLY: Hello, Miss Holly.
  561. 19:11HOLLY: Happy birthday. CHRISTI: We missed you!
  562. 19:12HOLLY: How does it feel to be 40?
  563. 19:13Terrible.
  564. 19:14[laughs]
  565. 19:15It's my birthday this week.
  566. 19:16I'm turning 40.
  567. 19:18And Christi has invited herself to my house
  568. 19:21with the girls for a party.
  569. 19:22CHRISTI: Oh, cheers!
  570. 19:23Oh!
  571. 19:24Happy birthday!
  572. 19:25Happy birthday!
  573. 19:26Oh, I love it!
  574. 19:27This is for you and Randy.
  575. 19:32[screams]
  576. 19:34[laughter]
  577. 19:35If you eat candy off of Randy, I'm going to lose my [bleep]..
  578. 19:40HOLLY: What's coming up next?
  579. 19:42[laughter]
  580. 19:44CHRISTI: Melissa is, like, the dirty one in the group.
  581. 19:46She really is.
  582. 19:48And it was hysterical because everything she's pulling out
  583. 19:49of the bag, she was trying to slip behind the pillow
  584. 19:51and take home later.
  585. 19:52Kelly, look.
  586. 19:53Have you ever faked an orgasm?
  587. 19:55No!
  588. 19:56She's never had one.
  589. 19:57[laughter]
  590. 19:59The moms always get along.
  591. 20:01You know, we argue, we fight.
  592. 20:02I don't know about-- MELISSA: I love it.
  593. 20:04CHRISTI: But I think this was a really good night for us
  594. 20:06because we kind of laughed.
  595. 20:07We put everything aside.
  596. 20:08We just enjoyed each other's company.
  597. 20:10- Oh, that's cute. - Cute.
  598. 20:11I really like that one.
  599. 20:12I had a great time.
  600. 20:13MELISSA: Cheers to the rest of season, girls,
  601. 20:15and I love you all.
  602. 20:16Cheers.
  603. 20:17May we all come out survivors.
  604. 20:19MELISSA: Yes.
  605. 20:22[music playing]
  606. 20:24ABBY: How we doing, ladies?
  607. 20:25KELLY: Can you try to keep those straight up?
  608. 20:27Thanks.
  609. 20:29ABBY: Today we're on our way to Providence, Rhode Island,
  610. 20:30for Starpower Regional Competition.
  611. 20:32Providence is an hour outside of Boston,
  612. 20:35and wicked, wicked competition.
  613. 20:38And we hope to qualify all of our routines.
  614. 20:40Get your stuff, babe.
  615. 20:41I have got to get my stuff out the back.
  616. 20:43OK?
  617. 20:44Chloe and I arrived at the dance studio
  618. 20:46to board the bus to get ready to go to Rhode Island.
  619. 20:48And I got a call from my cousin.
  620. 20:51And she had said overnight that my Gram had gotten worse,
  621. 20:55and she was now on a ventilator.
  622. 20:59What's going on?
  623. 21:04My grandma got bad overnight. (CRYING) She's not conscious,
  624. 21:08and they had to put her on a ventilator.
  625. 21:17I don't know if I should go.
  626. 21:20I can't imagine, you know, living my life without knowing
  627. 21:23my grandmother's here.
  628. 21:25Even if I don't see her or talk to her everyday,
  629. 21:27just knowing that she's there--
  630. 21:31I don't know.
  631. 21:32It gives me strength.
  632. 21:33And to think about her not being here anymore, you
  633. 21:36know, it just-- it's very hard.
  634. 21:39I'm very, very close with her.
  635. 21:41You have to do what makes you feel good.
  636. 21:43I know.
  637. 21:45If you feel like you need to be here, then stay.
  638. 21:47Chloe will be fine.
  639. 21:49CHRISTI: At this point, I just don't
  640. 21:51know what I'm going to do.
  641. 21:52How am I supposed to choose between two people I love so
  642. 21:54much?
  643. 22:00[music playing]
  644. 22:03If you feel like you need to be here, then stay.
  645. 22:04Chloe will be fine.
  646. 22:06I know.
  647. 22:07I know.
  648. 22:08BROOKE: Do you know how to French braid?
  649. 22:09I do.
  650. 22:10CHRISTI: I'm absolutely conflicted about what
  651. 22:11to do-- if I should go on this dance trip, which at this point
  652. 22:14is so not my priority, or if I should go to the hospital.
  653. 22:19It's bad enough that it's going on,
  654. 22:21and now you're leaving.
  655. 22:22But I know what my grandmother would tell me to do.
  656. 22:25She would tell me to go get on the plane.
  657. 22:27Yes, she would.
  658. 22:28My grandmother has been an incredible supporter of Chloe
  659. 22:32since day one.
  660. 22:33And my grandmother would have said, don't be ridiculous.
  661. 22:35You go get on that plane and do what you need to do for Chloe.
  662. 22:37You come back and see me. I'll be here.
  663. 22:43[music playing]
  664. 22:51[cheering and applause]
  665. 22:55ABBY: Starpower is a big competition.
  666. 22:57The judges will be looking for technique, choreography,
  667. 23:01performance, costume.
  668. 23:03I feel great.
  669. 23:04I think we're very well prepared and we're ready to go.
  670. 23:07Can I have everybody gather up so I can talk to everybody?
  671. 23:09I want eye contact, here.
  672. 23:11There's people here from all over the place.
  673. 23:13And the reason is, this is the last regional
  674. 23:15to qualify for their nationals.
  675. 23:17So I need you to be on the A game today.
  676. 23:21You have a new solo today.
  677. 23:22You have a new solo today.
  678. 23:24You have a new solo today.
  679. 23:25I was going to have you dance in whatever the next age group is,
  680. 23:28nine to 11.
  681. 23:29You've had a really easy year.
  682. 23:31You're on eight and under and you're eight.
  683. 23:33You're at the top of the age scale.
  684. 23:34Yes?
  685. 23:35Everybody else is at the bottom of their age scale.
  686. 23:37So we're to bump you up and put you on the youngest side,
  687. 23:40just so we see how it is.
  688. 23:41All right?
  689. 23:42I can't believe Abby bumped Maddie up
  690. 23:43into Chloe's age category.
  691. 23:45It's just typical Abby.
  692. 23:46She can't let Chloe just have her day.
  693. 23:49She always has to make it about Maddie.
  694. 23:52CHLOE: I really don't want Maddie bumped up into my age
  695. 23:54category.
  696. 23:56Because I feel like I have a better chance
  697. 23:57of winning first place if we were in separate categories.
  698. 24:02OK.
  699. 24:03But we have to get ready. - We have to get ready.
  700. 24:05Yes.
  701. 24:10Ew.
  702. 24:11MELISSA: That looks like Mackenzie would wear that.
  703. 24:13That--- Brooke's costume is awful.
  704. 24:16It was hot pink, and it had red polka dots on it
  705. 24:21that were stickers.
  706. 24:22It was just terrible.
  707. 24:23I don't know how we're going to come up with another costume,
  708. 24:26but Brooke is not wearing this costume onstage.
  709. 24:28That is just ugly.
  710. 24:30Does it look like 13 to 15-year-old age?
  711. 24:31No.
  712. 24:32She looks like Pennywise the clown.
  713. 24:38[chatter]
  714. 24:44CATHY: Brooke gets handed her costume.
  715. 24:46It is probably the ugliest costume I have ever seen.
  716. 24:49And all eyes fall on Vivi's top.
  717. 24:53And all of a sudden, Brooke is now wearing Vivi's top.
  718. 24:58I like the top.
  719. 25:00CATHY: Vivi finally gets a costume that
  720. 25:03is a custom made costume, and we have to now share.
  721. 25:07I'm not happy.
  722. 25:09[music playing]
  723. 25:10[cheering and applause]
  724. 25:12ANNOUNCER: [inaudible] hip-hop nine to 11-year-olds.
  725. 25:16Dancer number two, put your hands together for [inaudible]..
  726. 25:19[cheering and applause]
  727. 25:20Break a leg.
  728. 25:21And I love your veil.
  729. 25:22You're so sassy.
  730. 25:23All right.
  731. 25:24Good luck, have fun!
  732. 25:25It's really important that they make my mom proud of me.
  733. 25:28And when I'm dancing, I always look for her in the audience.
  734. 25:33ANNOUNCER: It's the Musical Theater category, nine to 11.
  735. 25:36Please welcome to the stage, Chloe, in "Parlez Moi."
  736. 25:39[cheering and applause]
  737. 25:41[music playing]
  738. 25:42[singing in french]
  739. 25:57CHRISTI: When I watch Chloe dance,
  740. 25:59it is such an amazing feeling for me.
  741. 26:01It's.
  742. 26:02Like magic she is my little girl.
  743. 26:04I-- I love her more than words can say.
  744. 26:06And when she's on stage, she's perfection.
  745. 26:08[singing in french]
  746. 26:16[cheering and applause]
  747. 26:21MADDIE: "Beautiful" is kind of a difficult dance
  748. 26:23and I really like the challenges.
  749. 26:25And I'm not afraid of competing against older girls
  750. 26:29because I'm used to winning every dance I do.
  751. 26:32ANNOUNCER: Coming up right now, judges, is 27-A.
  752. 26:3527-A, this is Maddie with a contemporary age nine.
  753. 26:40It's "Beautiful."
  754. 26:42[music playing]
  755. 26:54CHRISTI: There's other kids on the team who have worked hard.
  756. 26:56And Abby should have left Maddie in her own age category.
  757. 26:59Because then Maddie could have done that category,
  758. 27:01Chloe could have done this one, Brooke
  759. 27:03could have done the next one.
  760. 27:04She moved Maddie up so that she would make sure
  761. 27:07that Chloe didn't win.
  762. 27:09(SINGING) Didn't I-- oh, didn't I tell you
  763. 27:12when you took me that far?
  764. 27:16[cheering and applause]
  765. 27:20(SINGING) So beautiful.
  766. 27:34[cheering and applause]
  767. 27:40ANNOUNCER: All right, folks, here's your top five.
  768. 27:42[cheering] Here we go.
  769. 27:43In third place, entry number 24.
  770. 27:46MELISSA: The stakes are really high because this is regionals.
  771. 27:48And we have to do really well because this has to qualify us
  772. 27:51for nationals.
  773. 27:52Ladies and gentlemen, by less than one point
  774. 27:54separates second from first.
  775. 27:56Second place, entry number 25.
  776. 27:58That's Chloe from Abby Lee Miller.
  777. 28:00[cheering and applause]
  778. 28:02And, ladies and gentlemen, your Power Division nine
  779. 28:05to 11 soloist and they win the check, the plaque-- your winner
  780. 28:08will be Maddie Ziegler with "Beautiful."
  781. 28:10[applause]
  782. 28:12CHRISTI: Maddie beat Chloe by half a point.
  783. 28:14They shouldn't have even been competing against one another.
  784. 28:16I mean, this is kind of getting ridiculous.
  785. 28:18Chloe's constantly being set up to lose.
  786. 28:20It's not fair.
  787. 28:21CHLOE: I don't think it's fair that I didn't get first.
  788. 28:23I lost by half a point.
  789. 28:25CHRISTI: She's at least able to compete at nationals.
  790. 28:28Tell everybody your name one more time.
  791. 28:30Maddie. ANNOUNCER: And what studio?
  792. 28:31Abby Lee Dance Company.
  793. 28:32And who was your choreographer?
  794. 28:34MADDIE: Abby Lee.
  795. 28:35ANNOUNCER: Girls, guys, take them out!
  796. 28:36[cheering and applause]
  797. 28:37MELISSA: Maddie won first place for her solo.
  798. 28:38She's definitely going to nationals.
  799. 28:40[cheering and applause]
  800. 28:45Let's get some glitter.
  801. 28:46HOLLY: You're going to put glitter and get glitter
  802. 28:48on Cathy's costumer?
  803. 28:50KELLY: Oh, screw Cathy.
  804. 28:51I ain't afraid of her. HOLLY: Ooh.
  805. 28:52[laughs]
  806. 28:53[music playing]
  807. 28:56How did it go?
  808. 29:02--Paige-- Paige-- what's your kid's name?
  809. 29:04Brooke.
  810. 29:05Move, please.
  811. 29:06I don't want Brooke wearing the costume.
  812. 29:09I'm sorry.
  813. 29:10I just-- I thought about it and I saw you over here floundering
  814. 29:13the way you were sewing that.
  815. 29:14And it's not going to look the same tomorrow
  816. 29:16and we just need to come up with something else.
  817. 29:18Whatever, Brooke.
  818. 29:19Take the costume off.
  819. 29:20You know what, Cathy?
  820. 29:21If you don't want to be part of our group--
  821. 29:23CATHY: You know-- - --don't come to our studio.
  822. 29:25CATHY: Kelly, it has nothing to do with--
  823. 29:26Get the costume off.
  824. 29:27CATHY: It has nothing to do with being part of your group.
  825. 29:28My daughter is dancing in three minutes.
  826. 29:29CATHY: Well, I'm sorry.
  827. 29:30KELLY: And you're taking the costume off of her back.
  828. 29:32I know, but it's ridiculous that you guys aren't prepared.
  829. 29:32Whatever, Cathy.
  830. 29:33Come here.
  831. 29:35Yeah. You know what?
  832. 29:36Come back here, Kelly. We need to talk.
  833. 29:37KELLY: Leave our studio.
  834. 29:38CATHY: I don't need to leave your studio.
  835. 29:39My daughter has to go on stage.
  836. 29:40CATHY: No, I want-- I want-- no.
  837. 29:42I think we need to talk.
  838. 29:43Cathy is way out of line coming up to me three numbers
  839. 29:45before my daughter is going on stage
  840. 29:47and having her take her costume off.
  841. 29:48And I think it's [bleep].
  842. 29:49It's ridiculous.
  843. 29:51I never saw such disorganization in all my life.
  844. 29:53KELLY: Yeah.
  845. 29:54Well, it isn't my disorganization, is it?
  846. 29:55CATHY: Well, you know what? - But it'll hurt my daughter.
  847. 29:57You know what?
  848. 29:59I think that from now on when Abby insists on ridiculousness
  849. 30:01like this, that you stand up for yourself.
  850. 30:03Go back to your studio!
  851. 30:04You know what?
  852. 30:05I'm not.
  853. 30:06I'm here to stay, so like it.
  854. 30:11My daughter has to go on stage.
  855. 30:12I think we need to talk.
  856. 30:13No.
  857. 30:14Cathy is definitely not a team player.
  858. 30:16She's just looking out for herself and her daughter.
  859. 30:19You're doing it to show Abby something,
  860. 30:20and my daughter gets hurt. - No, I'm not.
  861. 30:21I'm not doing it to show Abby anything.
  862. 30:23Whatever, Cathy.
  863. 30:24CATHY: It's just that I haven't come and asked you
  864. 30:25for costumes. How did we even--
  865. 30:26No. But everybody else--
  866. 30:27CATHY: How--
  867. 30:28That's what we do as a group, Cathy.
  868. 30:29CATHY: How did we even come to that?
  869. 30:30We always share costumes.
  870. 30:32I mean, that's what a group is about.
  871. 30:33CATHY: They haven't had a new costume--
  872. 30:34- Whatever. - --the way everybody else has.
  873. 30:36Well, why didn't you tell me this earlier--
  874. 30:37CATHY: How many new costumes--
  875. 30:38--so I could have got my costume from Maddie.
  876. 30:39Kelly how many new costumes have you had?
  877. 30:41It doesn't matter. - Go back go your studio!
  878. 30:43CATHY: You know what? I'm not.
  879. 30:44I'm here to stay--
  880. 30:45KELLY: Yeah.
  881. 30:45--so like it.
  882. 30:46KELLY: Yeah, I don't. CATHY: OK.
  883. 30:48KELLY: Neither does anybody else.
  884. 30:49CATHY: Well, that's your problem.
  885. 30:50That's your problem.
  886. 30:51You need to like it.
  887. 30:52Well, here's your costume and you can sew it yourself.
  888. 30:57Hire one of your sewing ladies to sew it.
  889. 30:59Well, I intend to.
  890. 31:05She ripped the costume off of her,
  891. 31:07and she had the audacity to throw it at me.
  892. 31:11My daughter is going to dance in her leotard and tights,
  893. 31:13and I'd like to have one of your kids from your studio
  894. 31:15out there dancing against her. - Well, you know something?
  895. 31:17- Because I can guarantee you-- - You know what?
  896. 31:18- --she will beat their ass-- - Oh, I doubt it.
  897. 31:19--wearing a [bleep] leotard.
  898. 31:21- I-- I doubt it. - Watch.
  899. 31:22- I doubt it. - Let's go.
  900. 31:23I doubt it.
  901. 31:24Your kids all have sickle feet, and it blows my mind.
  902. 31:26Yeah.
  903. 31:27CATHY: Because that's all you hear is--
  904. 31:28KELLY: Yeah, Cath. Sure.
  905. 31:29CATHY: --sickle feet, sickle feet, sickle feet.
  906. 31:30And they all have them.
  907. 31:31Let's bring your studio-- CATHY: You know what?
  908. 31:32Bring it on, babe. - --to a competition we go to.
  909. 31:33CATHY: Bring it on. - Bring it on, Cathy.
  910. 31:34CATHY: Bring it on.
  911. 31:39Do not let it upset you.
  912. 31:41OK?
  913. 31:42You look fine.
  914. 31:44You don't need a costume to win.
  915. 31:45The costume looked nothing like what Vivi's was going to look
  916. 31:48like tomorrow for the duet.
  917. 31:50It was a totally different look.
  918. 31:52She just didn't want Brooke to wear the costume.
  919. 31:54I just think it was totally wrong, and very unfair
  920. 31:56to my daughter.
  921. 31:57And I did not appreciate it.
  922. 31:59ANNOUNCER: From Acro/Gymnastics category, 12 to 14--
  923. 32:02BROOKE: I'm not really mad at Cathy.
  924. 32:04I wish you just would have told me
  925. 32:05I wasn't allowed to wear it earlier because she took it off
  926. 32:08like two numbers before I went onstage.
  927. 32:10So I was really nervous and, like,
  928. 32:11didn't know what the judges were going to think.
  929. 32:13Because I'm supposed to be a supermodel and I was wearing,
  930. 32:15like, a crop top and booty shorts.
  931. 32:17[cheering and applause]
  932. 32:18[music playing]
  933. 32:29(SINGING) Tonight I look like something right out
  934. 32:32of a magazine.
  935. 32:33And everybody stares when I step up on the scene.
  936. 32:38I'm looking like a supermodel, a supermodel.
  937. 32:41I'm looking like a supermodel, a supermodel.
  938. 32:46(SINGING) And I love to get all the attention.
  939. 32:50(SINGING) Tonight I look like something right out
  940. 32:53of a magazine.
  941. 32:54[cheering and applause]
  942. 32:57(SINGING) I'm looking like a supermodel, a supermodel.
  943. 33:02I'm looking like a supermodel, a supermodel, a supermodel.
  944. 33:08[cheering and applause]
  945. 33:12[music playing]
  946. 33:16BROOKE: There was so much drama going on backstage that I think
  947. 33:19it kind of messed up my dance a little bit because I was so
  948. 33:22nervous.
  949. 33:23Good job, Brookie!
  950. 33:25MELISSA: You did great, honey.
  951. 33:26CHRISTI: You did great.
  952. 33:27KELLY: Brooke went on stage, she did fine.
  953. 33:29I think Brooke dances well enough that she doesn't need
  954. 33:32rhinestones and costumes.
  955. 33:33CHRISTI: You did great.
  956. 33:34HOLLY: Aw.
  957. 33:35Why are you crying?
  958. 33:36Because Cathy just got me so pissed off.
  959. 33:38And, you know, you did-- went out, you did great.
  960. 33:42Great.
  961. 33:44[music playing]
  962. 33:50CATHY: This morning, when we walked into our dressing rooms,
  963. 33:54I had no idea where my costume was.
  964. 33:56Where's your mom?
  965. 33:57Because I need my top.
  966. 33:59Last night I told Kelly that she had to fix Vivi's costume
  967. 34:02since she tore it to pieces.
  968. 34:04And she was still working on sewing the rhinestones on.
  969. 34:07MELISSA: If you want to put your--
  970. 34:08CATHY: Vivi dances at 10:22. MELISSA: If you want to go do--
  971. 34:09CATHY: And I'm not--
  972. 34:10I'm not like you guys.
  973. 34:12I don't run to the stage after her with a darning needle.
  974. 34:14I will have it ready.
  975. 34:15But I'm not like you, who takes it from the kid five minutes
  976. 34:17before they go onstage.
  977. 34:18Maybe that's when I should give you yours.
  978. 34:20CATHY: I'm a lot more prepared than you are.
  979. 34:22So, Brooke, did you do well last night?
  980. 34:24Oh, congratulations, Brooke.
  981. 34:26I'm sorry.
  982. 34:26Oh, she got sixth.
  983. 34:28Ooh.
  984. 34:28Yeah.
  985. 34:30Brooke won sixth place not because of the costume.
  986. 34:35Because there were five other girls
  987. 34:37that were better than her.
  988. 34:39All right, Cathy, here's your costume.
  989. 34:41I hope the rhinestones give your daughter some luck.
  990. 34:44I hate Cathy.
  991. 34:45I ended up fixing Vivi's costume.
  992. 34:47You couldn't tell I had touched it, at all.
  993. 34:50Cathy just needs to keep her mouth shut.
  994. 34:56Have you heard anything about your grandma?
  995. 34:59No.
  996. 35:00And, you know, I'm kind of looking at it like, you know,
  997. 35:03no news is good news.
  998. 35:04Yeah.
  999. 35:05I can't allow myself to think like, you know,
  1000. 35:08that she's mortal and that someday she's
  1001. 35:10not going to be here. I mean, I--
  1002. 35:11Yeah.
  1003. 35:12I mean, she is, what, 80--
  1004. 35:13She's 87.
  1005. 35:14Seven.
  1006. 35:15She's getting up there.
  1007. 35:16CHRISTI: But I need her. KELLY: I know.
  1008. 35:17Like, she's my mom. Like, I need her.
1009. 35:19I'm not ready not to have my mom.
1010. 35:21Let me see if I can call her.
  1011. 35:23[phone ringing]
  1012. 35:25Aunt Jackie?
1013. 35:26AUNT JACKIE (ON PHONE): Hi.
  1014. 35:27Hi.
1015. 35:30What's going on with Gram?
  1016. 35:42Oh, good.
  1017. 35:46Aw.
  1018. 35:47I'll be there.
  1019. 35:48I'll be there tomorrow.
  1020. 35:50CHRISTI: My grandmother's condition
  1021. 35:51has improved, significantly.
  1022. 35:53And I feel so much better.
  1023. 35:56I feel so relieved.
1024. 35:57And now I know that I made the right decision on coming
1025. 35:59to the competition with Chloe.
1026. 36:01I would try to leave early tomorrow.
  1027. 36:02I'm going to go.
  1028. 36:03Get an earlier flight.
1029. 36:04I'm going to go as soon as I can.
  1030. 36:07I'm so relieved.
  1031. 36:08KELLY: I know.
  1032. 36:09Give me a hug.
  1033. 36:11Don't worry about it.
  1034. 36:13Up!
  1035. 36:16Inside.
1036. 36:18Today's group number is "Where Have All the Children Gone?"
1037. 36:21It is a dark topic that has to do with children that have gone
  1038. 36:24missing.
1039. 36:25Choreographically, there is an edginess to it
  1040. 36:29and it's very subtle.
1041. 36:30So I don't even know if the judges will
1042. 36:31see all of that happening.
1043. 36:33MAN: (WHISPERING) --flesh of their sons and daughters.
1044. 36:35Where have all the children gone?
  1045. 36:40HOLLY: I think artistically it's a beautiful piece.
  1046. 36:43Yeah.
1047. 36:44HOLLY: But it's pretty somber to see a child choking themselves.
1048. 36:48I am always a big believer that Abby always
1049. 36:50has a strategy in mind that she doesn't share with everybody
  1050. 36:53else.
  1051. 36:54She's the expert, I'm not.
  1052. 36:55And that's what we're paying her to do,
1053. 36:56and I have to trust that she knows what she's doing.
  1054. 36:58It's jarring.
  1055. 37:00I don't know.
  1056. 37:00It's just plain creepy.
  1057. 37:01It is a little creepy because it's death.
  1058. 37:03HOLLY: But I think some of it's-- it's death
  1059. 37:05and it's violent.
1060. 37:06CHRISTI: I'm not really sure about "Where Have All
  1061. 37:07the Children Gone?"
  1062. 37:09It's really dark.
1063. 37:11I mean, we have little kids on stage handling an issue
  1064. 37:14that's--
1065. 37:15that's too dark for most adults.
1066. 37:16I don't think Abby wants to hear anything we have to say.
  1067. 37:20No, please.
1068. 37:21If we tell her that we're disturbed,
  1069. 37:23she'll shabby chokey us.
  1070. 37:26HOLLY: I know, exactly.
  1071. 37:27[music playing]
  1072. 37:31ABBY: It's a heavy topic.
  1073. 37:32I know that.
1074. 37:33But I'm trying to challenge than to emotionally execute
1075. 37:38the concept along with their dancing.
  1076. 37:41ANNOUNCER: OK.
1077. 37:42Please welcome to the stage, "Where Have All
  1078. 37:44the Children Gone?"
1079. 37:46MAN: (WHISPERING) The creaking silence of age echoes
  1080. 37:51through the streets.
1081. 37:53Sounds like old wooden floors under heavy feet.
1082. 37:57All of the children, once running around, have evacuated.
1083. 38:03Or maybe they just disappeared.
1084. 38:07Where have all the children gone?
1085. 38:11Just yesterday they were tying ribbons in trees
1086. 38:14and swinging from the branches.
  1087. 38:18Maybe this is just a dream.
1088. 38:22Maybe they're sleeping in rooms filled with metal shelves.

1090. 38:33where have all the children gone?

1098. 39:03it's too heavy and too mature.

1100. 39:07but once again, I'm not out to please the moms.
