- 0:01177, a bold and controversial decision
- 0:05changed the course of history. It was
- 0:08called the Act of Union, or as Scotland
- 0:11knew it, the Treaty of Union. Two
- 0:14ancient rivals, Scotland and England,
- 0:16agreed to unite, forming a new nation,
- 0:19the Kingdom of Great Britain. Scotland
- 0:22gave up its independence, who is here,
- 0:25but not its identity to it kept its own
- 0:28legal system. its distinctive education
- 0:31and its beloved Presbyterian church. The
- 0:34Union was political, but the heart of
- 0:36Scotland remained its own. The 177 Union
- 0:41still shapes the United Kingdom today.
- 0:44Centuries later, echoes of that decision
- 0:46continue to be felt.
