The 5 Things Every Masculine Room Gets Right — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00There's a difference between a room that
- 0:01has masculine things in it and a room
- 0:03that achieves the feeling of being
- 0:05masculine. This room is not just a dark
- 0:07wall with a leather sofa and a whiskey
- 0:09glass on a tray. If that's your style,
- 0:12those will help, but they don't create
- 0:14the standard. A truly masculine room has
- 0:16something deeper working beneath the
- 0:18surface through its weight, its order,
- 0:21and a bit of restraint. It feels
- 0:22comfortable, but it's not careless. It
- 0:25has personality without crossing into
- 0:27chaos. You can feel its strength, but
- 0:29that strength isn't forced on you. My
- 0:32name is Chaudhry, and in this video,
- 0:34we're going to break down five things
- 0:36every masculine room gets right. If
- 0:38you're a returning subscriber, hit the
- 0:40thumbs up. If you're new here, hopefully
- 0:42by the end of this video, you'll be a
- 0:44subscriber. Remember that if you would
- 0:45like our help in designing your room,
- 0:48you can have that help by clicking the
- 0:50link in the description below. The first
- 0:53one is material honesty. A masculine
- 0:56room gets the materials right. Wood
- 0:58should look like wood. Leather should
- 1:00look like leather. Stone, metal, linen,
- 1:03wool, and brass, they should all feel
- 1:05real and tactile. That may sound
- 1:07obvious, but it is one of the biggest
- 1:09reasons that so many rooms today feel
- 1:11hollow. We live in a market flooded with
- 1:14imitations. You see them constantly, and
- 1:16you'll know exactly what I'm talking
- 1:18about. Wood has become printed laminate.
- 1:21Leather is now bonded or vinyl. Stone
- 1:23tops are plastic composite with a marble
- 1:26pattern on top, and brass is now cheap
- 1:28metal painted yellow. When people see
- 1:31these materials marketed as the real
- 1:33thing over and over again, the eye
- 1:36slowly loses its calibration. If a
- 1:38person 100 years ago were to look at
- 1:40some of the furniture sold today, it's
- 1:42almost certain that they would say,
- 1:44"That's not wood. I don't know what it
- 1:46is, but it's not wood." And they would
- 1:49be right. Does every single thing in
- 1:51your home have to be expensive, 100%
- 1:53naturally sourced material? No. The
- 1:56problem is when the room is filled with
- 1:58materials pretending to be something
- 2:00they're not. The room will begin to feel
- 2:02cheap, even if someone can't verbalize
- 2:05why. Now that we're recognizing the
- 2:07importance of authentic materials, we'll
- 2:09need some working knowledge to help
- 2:11recalibrate our eyes. So next time we're
- 2:13out, we're searching online, what do we
- 2:15look for? Real leather has depth. It has
- 2:18natural creasing. There are pores and
- 2:21variation. It reflects light in a soft
- 2:23way. Rather than looking worse as it
- 2:25ages, it develops a desirable character.
- 2:29Fake leather often has a plastic sheen.
- 2:31There's unnatural repeated texture and a
- 2:34surface that cracks instead of patinas.
- 2:36Real wood has grain and variation.
- 2:39There's movement and texture in its
- 2:41pattern. The grain feels like it comes
- 2:43from within the material, not like a
- 2:44picture printed on top of it. Real stone
- 2:47has mineral variation. Real brass has
- 2:50warmth and density. Real linen wrinkles
- 2:52naturally. Real wool has weight and
- 2:55absorbs sound. Real metal feels cool,
- 2:59heavy, and substantial. Next time,
- 3:01rather than asking, "Does this look new
- 3:03and modern?" ask, "Does this behave like
- 3:06the real material behaves?" The
- 3:09strongest masculine interiors usually
- 3:12contain materials that are comfortable
- 3:14being exactly what they are. Oak is oak.
- 3:17Iron is iron. Leather is leather. This
- 3:20isn't cloak and dagger. It's honesty
- 3:22that provides depth. The second thing
- 3:25every masculine room gets right is art
- 3:27with character. This does not
- 3:29automatically mean old paintings. It
- 3:31doesn't mean the subject has to be
- 3:33landscapes or portraits. Those can be
- 3:36excellent in a traditional room, but art
- 3:38is subjective. People are going to like
- 3:40what they like. So the goal is not to
- 3:42force every man into the same category
- 3:44of art. The goal is to choose art in a
- 3:46thoughtful way. For a traditional room,
- 3:49that may be an old world painting, a
- 3:51naval scene, or something with animals
- 3:53as the subject matter. But for a modern
- 3:55industrial loft, it could be black and
- 3:57white photography. In a luxury
- 3:59penthouse, it may be a large, colorful,
- 4:02abstract piece. The subject matter can
- 4:04change. The standard does not. The art
- 4:07should support the mood of the room. It
- 4:09should have scale and feel as though it
- 4:11was chosen, not random. When art is
- 4:14purchased just to fill a wall, it
- 4:15communicates emptiness because it was
- 4:17chosen out of emptiness. The art is
- 4:20technically there, but it has no
- 4:22conviction. What we want is art that
- 4:24strengthens the room. Something that
- 4:26looks like it was chosen by a person
- 4:28with taste, direction, and a point of
- 4:31view. The third thing every masculine
- 4:33room gets right is the balance between
- 4:35comfort and discipline. This usually
- 4:37proves to be difficult for people. They
- 4:39try to make the room comfortable, and it
- 4:41ends up looking sloppy. Or they aim for
- 4:44it to be disciplined, and then it feels
- 4:46cold and off-putting. The best masculine
- 4:49rooms are right in the middle. The room
- 4:51invites you in. The sofa is deep enough
- 4:54to actually sit in. The chairs feel
- 4:56usable. The lighting is warm. The rug
- 4:58softens the floor. It's not stiff,
- 5:01staged, or untouchable. It's
- 5:03comfortable. But discipline still exists
- 5:05through the room's control. The pillows
- 5:07are not exploding everywhere. The coffee
- 5:09table is not covered in random objects.
- 5:12The room has shape and spacing. The
- 5:14colors are not fighting each other. Too
- 5:16much comfort without discipline becomes
- 5:19messy. But too much discipline without
- 5:21comfort becomes rigid. When both are
- 5:24present, the room feels livable and
- 5:26composed. You can pour a drink there,
- 5:29read a book, watch a film, have a
- 5:30conversation, and when no one is using
- 5:32the room, it still holds itself
- 5:35together. That is the balance. Relaxed,
- 5:38but not careless. The fourth thing every
- 5:41masculine room gets right is a sense of
- 5:43order. Now, order does not mean minimal.
- 5:46It does not mean empty. A masculine room
- 5:48can be layered with books and lamps,
- 5:51art, trays, leather chairs, rugs,
- 5:53plants, and personal objects. But, the
- 5:56eye should still understand what is
- 5:58happening. The seating area should make
- 6:00sense, and the coffee table should not
- 6:02feel like a dumping ground. If shelving
- 6:04is used, it should be orderly and
- 6:06shapely, not stuffed and cluttered. Art
- 6:08should be well-placed and proportionate.
- 6:11You want colors of the room to work
- 6:12together instead of competing for
- 6:14attention. We've all seen rooms that are
- 6:17filled with nice pieces, but because
- 6:19there is no rhythm, hierarchy, or
- 6:21breathing room, they feel nothing more
- 6:23than messy. A room with order has a
- 6:25clear focal point. It has space around
- 6:28important pieces. Objects are grouped
- 6:30with purpose. The furniture is arranged
- 6:32for conversation and comfort, but also
- 6:35for walking flow. This is what we mean
- 6:37when we say everything has a place. The
- 6:40fifth thing every masculine room gets
- 6:42right is proper scale. This is one of
- 6:44the fastest ways to make a room
- 6:46confident or to make it weak. Proper
- 6:49scale means the furniture feels
- 6:51appropriately sized for the room and
- 6:53strong enough to hold the space. If the
- 6:55furniture is too small, too thin, or too
- 6:57delicate, you'll find the room never
- 6:59comes together. You may technically have
- 7:01all the right pieces, a bed, dresser,
- 7:04rug, bench, and chair, but if those
- 7:06pieces don't have enough presence, it's
- 7:08hard to salvage. I want you to picture a
- 7:11large living room with a small sofa,
- 7:14skinny accent chairs, a little rug, and
- 7:16a tiny coffee table floating in the
- 7:18middle. If there were a window cracked
- 7:20open on a breezy day, it feels like
- 7:22everything would just blow away. A
- 7:25better version would be a deeper sofa, a
- 7:27larger rug that connects with the
- 7:29seating area, a substantial coffee
- 7:31table, and chairs with enough structure
- 7:34to balance the room. But, scale isn't
- 7:37just size. It's also appearance and
- 7:39posture. A chair can be physically large
- 7:42and still look weak if the legs are too
- 7:44thin or the arms are too narrow. A
- 7:46coffee table can be simple, but it
- 7:48shouldn't look like it was pulled from a
- 7:50closet to have a quick meal on. A lamp
- 7:53should have enough authority to feel
- 7:55acceptable next to the sofa, chair, or
- 7:58side table it's paired with. The pieces
- 8:00don't need to be oversized, but they do
- 8:02need to feel appropriately sized. That's
- 8:05proper scale. When you put these five
- 8:08things together, the room begins to
- 8:09develop and mature. The material honesty
- 8:12gives depth. The art provides character.
- 8:15Comfort and discipline make it balanced.
- 8:17Order gives it control and scale offers
- 8:21presence.
