Full transcript
- 0:00David Quaid, welcome back to the show.
- 0:02We were we were debating right before
- 0:05recording this. We're gonna jump into
- 0:06this is part of a uh when I bring back
- 0:08previous guests to talk about some cool
- 0:11SEO things for a little bit amount of
- 0:13time and it gives you some awesome SEO
- 0:16things to think about and to do. David,
- 0:19thanks again.
- 0:21Thanks so much for having me. Um, so
- 0:23yeah, I wanted to share a quick um, you
- 0:26know, time-saving hack, topical
- 0:28authority building hack. Uh, you hear a
- 0:30lot about people talking about keyword
- 0:32research, how difficult it is,
- 0:33especially if you don't have expensive
- 0:36tools to do it. Uh, people talk about
- 0:38how do I do FAQ content for example to
- 0:42or glossery content to boost my topical
- 0:44authority and I thought like here's a
- 0:46fiveinut hack that is going to change
- 0:49the way you do it forever. So, and it's
- 0:53not going to cost you anything and you
- 0:54don't need any specialized tools. So,
- 0:55first thing I'm going to share screen
- 0:57going to jump over to my favorite search
- 1:00engine.
- 1:02Um,
- 1:04and
- 1:06I'm going to obviously I Google my own
- 1:07name all the time. It's terrible,
- 1:10>> but I did get a I did get a knowledge
- 1:12panel last night. So, I'm really excited
- 1:14about that and it's thanks to your show.
- 1:17>> Well, thank Yeah, I thank you. Well, can
- 1:19you actually can you talk about that cuz
- 1:20it's very interesting.
- 1:22>> I can I got a knowledge panel. So, if
- 1:27you search for my name and you don't get
- 1:29Dennis Quaid,
- 1:31um
- 1:34you have to put SEO with it.
- 1:37>> Oh, well, it's gone now. But you she you
- 1:40could share the screenshot that you
- 1:41shared on on X.
- 1:44>> I can.
- 1:44>> Especially when these things show up,
- 1:46they come and go.
- 1:49They do
- 1:49>> and then they get more stable.
- 1:51>> But here, this is what it looks like.
- 1:53>> Yeah.
- 1:56>> And so I had to fill in
- 1:57>> I had to fill in a form. I had to take a
- 1:59selfie with uh my ID and
- 2:04>> I had to also take a screenshot of my
- 2:09LinkedIn and X page with my photograph
- 2:11in it.
- 2:13>> Why did you get this knowledge this
- 2:14knowledge panel?
- 2:16I so a couple of things. Um the number
- 2:20of people searching for me went up. Uh
- 2:23and I can see that cuz like for a start
- 2:26I have my own branded domain. So if
- 2:28you're doing SEO or anything and you
- 2:31don't have your own branded domain, are
- 2:33you even doing SEO?
- 2:37You have to have like if you're anybody,
- 2:39right, you have to have your own branded
- 2:42domain. Um,
- 2:44so the second thing is you need to have
- 2:48multiple pages and you probably want to
- 2:50add schema.
- 2:54So,
- 2:56uh, in some of these pages, I do
- 2:59actually have schema as to who I am.
- 3:03And then you also want to make sure
- 3:04people are like googling things about
- 3:07you. And if they are uh eventually
- 3:12Google will pop up a
- 3:15knowledge panel and then it lets you
- 3:16claim the knowledge panel and then when
- 3:18you claim the knowledge panel you have
- 3:20to have your ID and then that lets you
- 3:22>> what's really interesting is you said
- 3:24baby basically you came on the show you
- 3:26had the most watched guest episode of
- 3:29this podcast. Thanks again to everybody
- 3:30who watched that and uh then a lot of
- 3:34people started googling you. And then a
- 3:36lot of people started googling me and it
- 3:38and it went like really up. So it was
- 3:42like it went into like the thousands.
- 3:44>> And so Google is basically like this
- 3:47entity is something.
- 3:49>> Yes. And I don't know if it's like it
- 3:52has to go on for like 3 weeks, 6 weeks,
- 3:5612 months or if it has to reach a
- 3:59critical mass
- 4:01uh or if it's a specific type of schema.
- 4:05So, I don't know if it's the persona
- 4:07schema, but um we did add a persona
- 4:12schema on Friday.
- 4:14>> You know what? Oh. Oh, that's
- 4:16interesting. That's an interesting data
- 4:18point.
- 4:20>> What made you What caused you to do
- 4:21that?
- 4:22>> So, this was before this was before you
- 4:24got the knowledge panel.
- 4:26>> Yes. What made me do it? Um I was
- 4:27experimenting.
- 4:29>> Cool.
- 4:29>> Always be experimenting.
- 4:32So you added the persona schema
- 4:35>> as well as the So I added I I I had a
- 4:38page I had a service schema, I had a
- 4:41company schema and I added a persona
- 4:44schema or something like that. One one
- 4:45of the two one of
- 4:46>> Well, as as much as I would like to
- 4:48believe that the knowledge panel was due
- 4:50to this show, how do we know it wasn't
- 4:52just it wasn't just due to you adding
- 4:55the the schema?
- 4:57>> Definitely not. Um lots and lots of
- 4:59people have schema and have no knowledge
- 5:00panel. Um, uh, I've had schema about me
- 5:04on certain pages for a very long time.
- 5:07Uh, you only become a a knowledge entity
- 5:10when people search for you. It's like
- 5:11the same. You only you can only impact
- 5:13the suggested search or the people also
- 5:16ask by having people search. It's one of
- 5:18the most difficult things to do because
- 5:20you actually have to encourage multiple
- 5:22people with multiple IPs to search for
- 5:24something over a sustained uh period of
- 5:26time. And and how does um how does
- 5:30Google come to associate your ex and
- 5:32your LinkedIn?
- 5:34>> Um
- 5:36or what do you believe?
- 5:38>> So I think one of the pages that all of
- 5:42my pages are cross linked and then um
- 5:45it's this specific page that was
- 5:48actually is so if if you go back and
- 5:50look at the X screen, you can see it's
- 5:53this particular page and so this
- 5:55particular page links to both. And this
- 5:57is the page with the schema.
- 5:59>> Hey, look, it's me.
- 6:00>> You can look at schema checker.
- 6:04Go into here, paste the page, run the
- 6:07test, and there's the schema. So, we
- 6:11added a profile page, a person, a local
- 6:13business, and a web page, which is the
- 6:15default.
- 6:16>> Mhm.
- 6:18>> And
- 6:20yeah. Uh, so I you obviously have to I
- 6:24think you have to have the search is the
- 6:26most important and then the schema helps
- 6:27it. But they didn't email me. They
- 6:30didn't. So I don't think it was that. I
- 6:32didn't get an email about it. Um
- 6:36although
- 6:38although although although it did have
- 6:41my email when I was doing the validation
- 6:44test and I think it got it from like
- 6:48here. That's very interesting.
- 6:51>> Okay. So, how do how do how did do the
- 6:54people also ask hack? Right. So, let
- 6:56give me a topic. Do you want to do
- 6:57whiskey?
- 6:58>> Let's do whiskey.
- 7:00>> I have I have some whiskey in my Tumblr.
- 7:02We were talking about that before we
- 7:03started recording.
- 7:05>> So, do a search and then come straight
- 7:08down to the people also ask and then
- 7:10pick
- 7:11>> pick the most.
- 7:12>> Increase the the text size, please.
- 7:14>> Of course. Zoom it in. So, let's let's
- 7:18pick the whiskies that you think are
- 7:20most relevant or the the questions you
- 7:22like, right? Like get a good screen
- 7:25like that, right? Or or however many you
- 7:27want and take your favorite
- 7:31take your favorite screen grabbing
- 7:33software,
- 7:35get a screenshot,
- 7:37go to your favorite Googlebased
- 7:41uh LLM tool. Perplexity is mine. paste
- 7:44it and then create a prompt something
- 7:46like this using
- 7:51my website or whatever as a base I don't
- 7:54know how I don't know how effective this
- 7:56is as a base write a 120word answer for
- 8:03each question what's amazing when you
- 8:06take screenshots or even like partial
- 8:08screen grabs uh the LLMs know what it is
- 8:11like if you take it like a partial
- 8:12screen grab of like say queries in
- 8:15search console, it'll know search
- 8:17console because there's such pattern
- 8:19recognition machine.
- 8:20>> Um, so write 120 word question.
- 8:23>> Can you zoom in again by the way? Yep.
- 8:24>> Cuz I think it might be hard for people
- 8:26to to see.
- 8:28>> And then here's a pro tip, right? Give
- 8:32the answer as plain text in a code
- 8:36snippet and then this way you won't get
- 8:38all of the HTML formatting.
- 8:42So what it'll do is it'll write the
- 8:43answers for you as right.
- 8:46>> This method of marketing is so effective
- 8:48I had to make sure it wasn't against
- 8:49Google's rules before I kept doing it.
- 8:51It's a form of SEO I call compact
- 8:54keywords. Whereas most SEO focuses on
- 8:56putting up articles to answer questions
- 8:59how, what, when. Compact keywords
- 9:01focuses on putting up dozens of pages
- 9:03that sell to searchers who are actually
- 9:05looking to buy. These pages rank on
- 9:08Google and convert so much better than
- 9:10normal that when I discovered this years
- 9:12ago, I couldn't believe this was
- 9:14allowed. It's less work, too. The
- 9:16average compact keywords page is only
- 9:18415 words. Compact Keywords is a 13-hour
- 9:22deep course on getting sales with SEO. A
- 9:25customer recently said, "Each lesson is
- 9:28dense with information. You're giving
- 9:30years worth of experience boiled down
- 9:32into 15 to 30 minute lessons with no
- 9:35filler or fluff. I feel like I'm gaining
- 9:37a new superpower. Compact Keywords is
- 9:40about setting up an SEO funnel that
- 9:42brings you sales for years and years and
- 9:44years. It works with AI. It's less work
- 9:47than traditional SEO and it makes way
- 9:50more money. You can get it now at
- 9:52compactkeywords.com.
- 9:54Back to the podcast. And then when it
- 9:57eventually finishes kicking all of it
- 9:58out, uh, when you copy and paste this,
- 10:02it'll be really easy to, um, edit. Now,
- 10:05I don't know why it's stuck these in.
- 10:09>> Um, I'm going to stop it and go back and
- 10:12edit this and say, um, remove citations.
- 10:16>> That might stop it from doing that.
- 10:18That's the first time I've seen it do it
- 10:20in an exercise like this.
- 10:23But this is a massive timesaver, right?
- 10:25like in 10 minutes you could go from
- 10:27having zero content.
- 10:29Look at this. It's writing a question
- 10:33um for all of
- 10:36>> what you would you would make each of
- 10:37these in H2.
- 10:39>> I would do that or if I'm if I'm
- 10:42developing my topical authority, I
- 10:44wouldn't even bother putting them on the
- 10:46same page. I would build these out as an
- 10:47individual FAQ and I would dispense with
- 10:50schema.
- 10:52What would the Yeah, go on.
- 10:55>> So, what I'm going to do is I would I
- 10:56I'll go to a doc, right? And I'll Oh,
- 11:03>> explain what you mean you would dispense
- 11:04with schema.
- 11:06>> I So, there's a couple of things about
- 11:10ranking that I think people don't
- 11:12understand and that's why I find the
- 11:13schema thing so funny, right? Is schema
- 11:16doesn't make you rank. uh for schema to
- 11:18make you rank a a an algorithm whatever
- 11:21you believe is has an algorithm would
- 11:23have to take all of the content find the
- 11:26best content and then kick out all the
- 11:28content without schema that makes no
- 11:30sense right
- 11:33in in other words if schema is going to
- 11:34help you rank it would have to ignore
- 11:36all of the content with sche without
- 11:37schema and that just isn't true because
- 11:40content with without schema ranks all
- 11:43the time so what I would say is for each
- 11:46of these is make them a page so that the
- 11:48page title is and the document name is
- 11:52the question. That gives you 100%
- 11:54relevancy. Now, some people will say,
- 11:57well, you only need a partial match.
- 11:59That's coming from people having
- 12:01different observations and their website
- 12:04that they're developing their
- 12:05observations experience from is growing
- 12:07in topical authority and external
- 12:08authority. The less authority you have,
- 12:11the greater the relevance to the search
- 12:13phrase, the greater your authority is
- 12:16used. It's like same as like ad rank,
- 12:19right? Like it's ad quality score times
- 12:21by dollar bid. So you can make your your
- 12:24your page more relevant to the topic,
- 12:27you will rank higher. That's why that's
- 12:29how SEOs first reverse engineered how
- 12:32important the page title is or how
- 12:34important the slug is or that's the
- 12:37document name because not all documents
- 12:40that Google indexes are HTML. It
- 12:43supports 57 types and there's only a
- 12:46handful that support a metad description
- 12:48or a page title or a H1. Um, you know,
- 12:52BAS files, image files do not have page
- 12:55titles. They don't have
- 12:57metadescriptions. So these things cannot
- 12:59be uh critical to SEO. They can be
- 13:02suggestive and helpful and increase
- 13:04relevance if you create an FAQ on its
- 13:07own page. So there's two ways of doing
- 13:09it. Developers prefer to do it as an
- 13:11accordion. People that have lots of
- 13:13authority and want to increase
- 13:15clickthrough rate do it as an accordion.
- 13:17Everyone else should do it as its own
- 13:19page. And if you do it as own page, you
- 13:21don't use schema. You only use schema to
- 13:23help like Google separate where the
- 13:25question ends and answers. schema does
- 13:28nothing to the question. It doesn't make
- 13:29it more uh trustworthy. It doesn't add
- 13:32any authority to it. It just helps text
- 13:35scrapers scrape it out. Uh that's why I
- 13:37find it so funny. And if you put this if
- 13:39you do this without schema, you you'll
- 13:42you're you're definitely going to rank.
- 13:44If you if you put this in an accordion
- 13:46and you don't rank, it's because you
- 13:47don't have the topical authority to do
- 13:49so. And that's all it is. Uh, so how are
- 13:52you going to um structure the slugs for
- 13:56each of these?
- 13:58>> Um, absolutely. The type the the
- 14:00question is the slug.
- 14:02>> Mhm. And are you going to use what is
- 14:05are you going to use a subfolder like
- 14:06FAQ or whiskey questions?
- 14:10>> Absolutely.
- 14:12>> Would you would you call it something
- 14:14would you put would you try to actually
- 14:16have the topic in the subfolder or would
- 14:18you just do a generic FAQ?
- 14:21um
- 14:22>> or it depends on the brand name and what
- 14:24the brand is about.
- 14:26>> It really depends on your topic and if
- 14:28you're and how expansive your web is. Uh
- 14:32I don't think that the parent folder has
- 14:34much impact on the sug.
- 14:38Um, but if you're going to develop lots
- 14:40of other topics and FAQs, then I would
- 14:46>> if you're going to do if you mean like
- 14:49uh well, what if you're going to do lots
- 14:50of other FAQs in the same niche? So,
- 14:53you're going to do like one like this is
- 14:54whiskey, right? You're going to do one
- 14:56that's tequila and one that's vodka.
- 14:59>> Then I'm definitely going to have
- 15:01different FAQ parent folders.
- 15:03>> Mhm.
- 15:04>> Absolutely.
- 15:04>> So, what would it read like what I don't
- 15:06know? I guess it depends on your brand.
- 15:08Whiskey questions, whiskey FAQs,
- 15:11>> it whiskey answers.
- 15:13>> It could be whiskey tasting FAQs. It
- 15:16could be
- 15:16>> Mhm. It depends.
- 15:18>> Yeah, this is cool.
- 15:20>> Thank you.
- 15:21>> Thank you for showing that. All right,
- 15:22that's all. That's
- 15:24>> this is uh Yeah, we're doing we're doing
- 15:26a bunch of like quick little fun tips
- 15:28and we're going to have a lot more of
- 15:30these with more guests from the past and
- 15:33new guests. So, thanks again to David.
