The 5-Minute Breakfast That I Make as a Nutritionist for a Healthy Brain — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00This is my five minute brain boosting
- 0:02breakfast bowl and it changed everything
- 0:05for me. Hi, I'm Dan Martin, a chef and
- 0:07nutritionist. But back when I was
- 0:08training in kitchens, I was burning out
- 0:10fast. Breakfast wipe me out, I crushed
- 0:12by midday, lose focus, and never really
- 0:14feel on top of my game. Maybe you think
- 0:16breakfast isn't that important or that
- 0:18eating well is just complicated. But
- 0:20I'll show you how one simple bowl can
- 0:21shift the way your whole day feels.
- 0:23Trust me, it can. How do I know? I've
- 0:25cooked thousands of meals to help people
- 0:27feel better. But I wasn't always looking
- 0:29after myself. Long hours, poor habits. I
- 0:32didn't even realize I was running on
- 0:33empty until I changed what I put on my
- 0:35plate. So, let's break the cycle. I'm
- 0:37going to show you my go-to breakfast.
- 0:39Quick, energizing, and simply enjoyable.
- 0:42Even my kids love it, unless they're
- 0:43being picky, which is quite often, but
- 0:46we roll with the punches. Here's what I
- 0:47see all the time. People undervalue
- 0:49breakfast. We get that it shouldn't be a
- 0:51big production, so we just grab a slice
- 0:53of toast and head out the door. But
- 0:55simple doesn't mean unimportant. What
- 0:57you eat first thing still shapes your
- 0:59entire day. You need one solid meal,
- 1:01fast, satisfying, and packed with
- 1:03ingredients that work for you, not
- 1:06against you. This bowl is exactly that.
- 1:08It's energy you can feel, focus you can
- 1:10use, and digestion that doesn't hijack
- 1:13your morning and keeps it smooth,
- 1:15steady, and predictable, which is what
- 1:17we want. Let's be honest, no one's got
- 1:19time for surprises on a busy day. Here's
- 1:21what you'll need and why it works.
- 1:23First, 200 g of Greek yogurt. High in
- 1:25protein to keep you full and packed with
- 1:27probiotics to support gut and immune
- 1:29health. You want to keep it vegan, use
- 1:31any plant-based yogurt just to be sure
- 1:33to boost the protein with a glass of soy
- 1:35milk, a scoop of protein powder, or
- 1:37whatever works for you. Next, add 60 ml
- 1:40or a tablespoon or two of keier. It's a
- 1:42fermented milk drink that adds even more
- 1:44gutloving probiotics. Think of Greek
- 1:46yogurt as the fuel. Ke is the high
- 1:48octane upgrade. Next, add 50 g of frozen
- 1:51mixed berries loaded with antioxidants
- 1:53and polyphenols. They help protect your
- 1:54cells, support brain health, and give
- 1:56you that sweet hit without the sugar
- 1:58crush. Next, we have 15 g of crushed
- 2:00walnuts. These are the MVPs. Packed with
- 2:01omega-3s and shown in studies to boost
- 2:04memory and cognitive function. They even
- 2:06look like tiny little brains. They act
- 2:08like it, too. This is the one thing I'll
- 2:09never skip. These bad boys are your
- 2:11shortcut to sharper thinking, better
- 2:12focus, and showing up like a pro.
- 2:15Whether it's work, parenting, or just
- 2:16crushing your day. 15 g of mixed nuts
- 2:19and seeds. Here, we're not only adding
- 2:20diversity to our bowl, we're also adding
- 2:22healthy fats, protein, fiber, and
- 2:24essential minerals. Think of them as a
- 2:26crunchy natural vitamin. 15 grams of
- 2:28chia seeds soaked overnight in a 3:1
- 2:31ratio. They're high in fiber and
- 2:33omega-3s. These help with digestion,
- 2:34blood sugar balance, and keep you
- 2:36feeling full for hours. 1 tbsp of kin
- 2:39powder, which is a roasted soy flour, a
- 2:41quiet superfood. Subtle nutty flavor,
- 2:44extra plant protein, and a hit of iron
- 2:46and isoflavones. Now, if you can't get
- 2:48kin powder, no problem. So in almond
- 2:50flour, peanut powder, or your favorite
- 2:52protein powder. I just happen to live in
- 2:54Japan where this is readily available.
- 2:55And finally, if you want to add a touch
- 2:57of extra sweetness to make it more
- 2:58palatable, then add 1 teaspoon of maple
- 3:00syrup. As far as sweeteners go, I like
- 3:02maple syrup cuz it contains antioxidants
- 3:05and some minerals like manganesees, too.
- 3:07Remember, just a touch is enough. Don't
- 3:08give it to your kid because he will just
- 3:10go crazy with it. This bowl contains
- 3:12around 25 g of protein as it is. If
- 3:14you're aiming for 30 or 40 grams, just
- 3:15add a large glass of soy milk, a scoop
- 3:17or two of protein powder or bump up the
- 3:19Greek yogurt. Any of those will easily
- 3:21push your protein up by another 10 to 20
- 3:23gram. Okay, so night before you want to
- 3:25soak your chia seeds in water three
- 3:27times the water to seed ratio. So 1 tbsp
- 3:29of chia seeds requires 3 tbsp of water
- 3:32and leave that overnight. Next, we're
- 3:34going to mix our Greek yogurt and keir.
- 3:36We're going to spoon that into a bowl.
- 3:38And then next, we're going to layer our
- 3:40berries, chia, walnuts, and all your
- 3:42little extras inside our breakfast bowl.
- 3:45Finally, we're going to drizzle maple
- 3:46syrup if you want the extra sweetness.
- 3:48And if you're my son, it's not a
- 3:50drizzle, it's always a pour. This recipe
- 3:52doesn't even need cooking. I know, I
- 3:54know, I'm a chef, but that doesn't mean
- 3:56every meal has to be fancy. Some of the
- 3:58best meals are fast, smart, and save you
- 4:00time and energy when you need to tackle
- 4:02what life's about to throw at you. This
- 4:04bowl is exactly that. Now, here's why
- 4:06this kind of breakfast matters. If you
- 4:08start your day with just carbs, toast,
- 4:10sugary cereal, you'll get a quick spike
- 4:12in energy, but then crash by 10 or 11:00
- 4:14a.m. You're starving again, low focus,
- 4:16and reaching for snacks. This bowl, it's
- 4:18slow release. Protein, fiber, good fats.
- 4:22They stabilize your blood sugar, keep
- 4:24you full for longer, and give you a
- 4:25calm, steady energy. That's the
- 4:27difference. That's the advantage. Now,
- 4:29if you're still here, here's a little
- 4:30Brucey bonus. This bowl isn't one
- 4:32sizefits-all. You can tweak it depending
- 4:34on what kind of day you're about to
- 4:35have. If you're bulking or need extra
- 4:37calories, add a handful of extra nuts or
- 4:38a scoop of nut butter like peanut
- 4:40butter. Hit in the gym later? Stir in
- 4:42some oats or cooked quinoa for slow
- 4:44release carb. Got a long day deep
- 4:45thinking? Double up on the walnuts. Your
- 4:47brain will thank you. Or if you're
- 4:49feeling sluggish or constipated, add
- 4:51more cheer or some ground flax seed.
- 4:53Trust me, it works. Need it on the go?
- 4:56Layer in a jar and take it with you. It
- 4:58keeps well for hours. Now, if you're
- 4:59craving something warm and savory in the
- 5:01morning, check out my next video. It's a
- 5:025-minute high protein tofu scramble that
- 5:04will change the way you think about
- 5:06tofu. Yes, even if you've never liked
