- 0:00A car that rolls on the ceiling, jumps
- 0:02over stationary cars in a loop, and
- 0:05then gently lands on the ground in a
- 0:07perfectly controlled sweep. Tesla
- 0:10pushed the staging of its new sports
- 0:12car, the Roadster, very far. But behind
- 0:14this American-style show that is
- 0:16supposed to amaze us, several questions
- 0:18remain unanswered, and you will see
- 0:20that the subject goes far beyond the
- 0:21simple presentation of a new electric
- 0:23car. So how does this roadstore work?
- 0:27What is it for? What is its promise?
- 0:30Will these technologies be applied in
- 0:32production cars, and will they really
- 0:34be available one day? That's what we're
- 0:37going to see in this video, in which I
- 0:39will answer all these questions and
- 0:41many others precisely because this
- 0:43presentation impressed me but also left
- 0:45me with a slight aftertaste of being a
- 0:47complete joke, I won't hide that from
- 0:49you. And stay until the end because I
- 0:52will explain to you why some of the
- 0:54comparisons that I saw after this
- 0:56launch don't hold water for a second.
- 0:59And just to clarify, this video is not
- 1:01intended to be a Tesla bashing, but
- 1:03rather to examine the facts in the most
- 1:06objective way possible. For those who
- 1:08don't know me, I'd like to remind you
- 1:10that I personally drove a Tesla for 5
- 1:12years and loved it. Let's get started.
- 1:20First, let's recap the early days of
- 1:22the Roadster project. We'll quickly go
- 1:24over the first Roadster. The first
- 1:26version came out in 2008 after Elon
- 1:29Musk bought Tesla, and it was the first
- 1:32Tesla and the first electric sports car
- 1:35based on the Lotus Elise. The vehicle
- 1:38had already caused a sensation at the
- 1:40time, allowing a few wealthy
- 1:41Californians to show off in what was
- 1:43the first production electric car. Then
- 1:47Elon Musk presented what was called the
- 1:49Roadstore 2 in 2017. A superb electric
- 1:52sports car promising extraordinary
- 1:54performance and autonomy, with hints
- 1:56that this car could be equipped with
- 1:59rocket propulsion and that it could fly
- 2:01. At the time, no one really believed
- 2:04it. At this presentation, the official
- 2:07release date was announced as 2020.
- 2:09Many fans confidently placed orders,
- 2:12paying a deposit of € 50,000. 9 years
- 2:15later and following numerous promises
- 2:17that were constantly pushed back, the
- 2:18Roadstore 2 still hasn't been released,
- 2:20and the suckers who paid a deposit are
- 2:22disappointed. But there's finally
- 2:24something new with the presentation on
- 2:26October 15th last week, where Tesla
- 2:28unveiled a profoundly different car
- 2:30with a new design, new ambitions, and a
- 2:32new deadline. This time, we're talking
- 2:35about 2028. In the meantime, the
- 2:37electric sports car has discovered
- 2:39abilities that bring it closer to its
- 2:41boss's space program. You've probably
- 2:44all seen the video. A car climbs a ramp
- 2:46until it ends up upside down, then
- 2:48performs an aerial maneuver before
- 2:50landing on its wheels. All without a
- 2:53driver, as part of a demonstration
- 2:54whose preparation and organization left
- 2:56us a little lost. It must be said. With
- 2:59this new version, the curves of the
- 3:012017 prototype give way to an angular
- 3:04body, strip lighting signatures, and
- 3:06doors that open upwards. The influence
- 3:09of the Cybertruck can be seen in this
- 3:11geometry, with something of a
- 3:12Lamborghini that has been through the
- 3:14Tesla design office. Personally, I much
- 3:17prefer the 2017 version, but each to
- 3:19their own after all. At the rear, a
- 3:22large movable spoiler on the lead
- 3:23covers several openings, some of which
- 3:25look like exhaust outlets. The height
- 3:27of irony on an electric car is that it
- 3:29is actually a cold gas engine that
- 3:31allows the car to accelerate in ways
- 3:33that would be impossible with a
- 3:35conventional engine, even an electric
- 3:36one. The video mentions four versions:
- 3:40a basic version without the most
- 3:42extravagant features. Then the
- 3:44performance thrust and rocket versions.
- 3:48The first one remains quite
- 3:49undocumented for now. The other three
- 3:51correspond to a progression ranging
- 3:53from active aerodynamic support to a
- 3:55thruster capable of moving the car
- 3:56through the air. It is clear that some
- 3:58features depend on the configuration
- 4:00and, of course, the region in which it
- 4:02is sold. We imagine that there will be
- 4:04very few regions in the world that will
- 4:06be able to sell the Tesla rocket. First
- 4:09, how does the car stay on the ceiling,
- 4:11but Malarie? Well, it's quite simple
- 4:12and it's not that new. It uses fans to
- 4:15extract air from under the bodywork.
- 4:18Skirts close to the ground maintain a
- 4:20low-pressure zone, a bit like suction
- 4:22cups. The difference between the air
- 4:24pressure above the car, the gold plate
- 4:26on the ground or against the ceiling.
- 4:28In fact, the car is simply equipped
- 4:30with a giant vacuum cleaner that
- 4:31presses it to the ground with enough
- 4:33support to exceed the weight of the car
- 4:35. Driving upside down becomes
- 4:36physically possible on a suitable
- 4:38installation. Of course, you can
- 4:39perhaps have fun driving in a tunnel
- 4:41upside down, but it will be a little
- 4:42complicated all the same. As I said,
- 4:44the principle is not new. It even dates
- 4:47back a little since it had already been
- 4:49introduced in Formula 1 with the Brabam
- 4:52BT46 in 1978. More recently, the
- 4:54MacMury Sperling, this small British
- 4:56electric single-seater works on the
- 4:58same principle with performances
- 5:00equivalent to this Tesla Roadster.
- 5:02Tesla would thus use a known solution,
- 5:04aiming to integrate it into its own
- 5:06sports car. The announced time for the
- 5:09performance is around 1.6 seconds from
- 5:110 to 60 km/h, which corresponds to
- 5:13around 1.65 seconds for 0 to 100 km/h.
- 5:16For use on a circuit, the logic is
- 5:18quite convincing on the road, but it
- 5:19raises more questions. How does the
- 5:22system react to bumps, potholes, debris
- 5:24, and road irregularities? How is the
- 5:27skirts worn? How can noise and rear-end
- 5:29projections be limited with the fan?
- 5:32The second version, the frost version,
- 5:34would add rear-wheel drive powered by
- 5:36pressurized nitrogen. According to the
- 5:38specifications reported in the video, a
- 5:40200-liter tank would contain more than
- 5:42100 kg of gas, around 690 bar, which is
- 5:44still a lot of pressure. The thrust
- 5:46then complements the thrust of the
- 5:48electric motors without depending
- 5:49solely on the grip of the tires or the
- 5:50resistance of the tires. Tesla thus
- 5:53announces a 0 to 97 km/h acceleration
- 5:56in less than a second. However, this
- 5:58capacity would have a fairly concrete
- 5:59limit. The thrust mode would last 3 to
- 6:025 seconds and then the gas reserve
- 6:03would have to be replenished, which
- 6:05would take around 6 to 7 hours, which
- 6:07would put the possibility of launching
- 6:09rocket-style launches into perspective.
- 6:11Added to this are questions about noise
- 6:13, the protection of people nearby, and
- 6:14the resistance of the device in the
- 6:16event of a collision. We can easily
- 6:18imagine the Rogue version pushing the
- 6:20exercise even further with six
- 6:22additional thrusters oriented in
- 6:23different directions and an additional
- 6:25400 L tank that occupies the passenger
- 6:27space. The roadstore would therefore
- 6:30become a single-seater with a 0 to 100
- 6:32announced at around 0.7 seconds and the
- 6:34famous acrobatics. To give you a
- 6:36reference, a Formula 1 car does 0 to
- 6:38100 in around 2 seconds in the best
- 6:40grip conditions, or even a little less.
- 6:43And a Formula E, the electric Formula 1
- 6:45in 1.7 seconds. This version would be
- 6:48accessible by invitation only and would
- 6:50not be allowed on the open road. That's
- 6:52for the spectacular and, let's say,
- 6:54completely lunar side of the
- 6:55presentation, or rather Martian in this
- 6:57case. But it's the more classic
- 6:59characteristics of the machine that
- 7:01really interest us. The video reports a
- 7:03target mass of less than 1,700 kg,
- 7:04which is not bad for a car in this
- 7:06category. A carbon fiber body and two
- 7:09motors that drive only the rear wheels.
- 7:12While the 2017 version offered three or
- 7:14four motors, the power would be around
- 7:171,000 to 1,300 horsepower. One thing
- 7:20that really surprised me was the choice
- 7:22to make it a rear-wheel drive at a time
- 7:24when the most efficient electric cars,
- 7:26including Tesla's, generally use € 4
- 7:28motors. In terms of autonomy, it's a
- 7:32big scam, we can say, since it would
- 7:34ultimately be only 480 km while Mosque
- 7:36had promised nearly 1000 km during the
- 7:39first presentation in 2017. The
- 7:41charging power could reach 500 kW from
- 7:4315 to 80%in 10 minutes. Nothing too
- 7:47crazy in 2026 when we see what brands
- 7:49like Denza and Byyd or others are
- 7:51offering today with flash charging from
- 7:5410 to 97%, so almost 5%in 9 minutes or
- 7:56from 20 to 80%in 5 minutes. So much for
- 7:59the technology. Now the question that
- 8:01everyone asked themselves apart from
- 8:03the Transit fan boys who would have
- 8:04applauded anyway even if Mosque had
- 8:06presented a new adjustable wrench. What
- 8:08is it for? This is the first thought
- 8:11that comes to mind once you get past
- 8:13the pits of the kenote and these
- 8:15somewhat surreal images. In fact, the
- 8:17answer is neither rational nor
- 8:19pragmatic. It is first and foremost a
- 8:21demonstration, a demonstration of
- 8:23technology, of know-how, and also the
- 8:24demonstration that we can always dream
- 8:26higher, further, and stronger. In this
- 8:29sense, the bet has paid off, and we
- 8:31have to admit that we have witnessed a
- 8:32pretty crazy thing that consists of
- 8:34making a machine fly in a controlled
- 8:35manner that was absolutely not
- 8:36originally designed for that. A machine
- 8:39with no A, no rotor, no rudder. A kind
- 8:42of anvil in fact. Which somewhat defies
- 8:45the laws of aerodynamics and lift, and
- 8:47which makes it closer to a rocket than
- 8:49an airplane. So the logic is quite
- 8:51respected in the end. Then, regarding
- 8:54the real usefulness, we have to see if
- 8:56all this technology could be integrated
- 8:57into everyday cars and for what purpose
- 8:59. Honestly, I don't see any, except
- 9:02perhaps thrusters that would improve
- 9:04acceleration without draining the
- 9:06battery and wearing out the tires, or
- 9:08to boost the car on a hill to improve
- 9:10its range with small boosts. Regarding
- 9:13the suction system, apart from
- 9:15ultra-sporty driving and therefore on
- 9:16the circuit, who really needs a car
- 9:18that is glued to the ground? I don't
- 9:20really see any. Then, we're talking
- 9:22about innovation. But what innovation
- 9:23are we talking about? I personally
- 9:25don't see any. A flying car, that's not
- 9:28true. The Roadstore doesn't fly. It's
- 9:30not a flying car. It's a car that jumps
- 9:32a few meters off the ground for a few
- 9:34seconds before reaching solid ground.
- 9:37And gravity can't be fought like that
- 9:38with a few thrusters capable of
- 9:40operating for only a few seconds. So
- 9:42there's no innovation on that front.
- 9:44Aviation has existed for a century,
- 9:45rockets for over 60 years. And if we
- 9:49want to talk about flying cars, or
- 9:51rather flying personal transport
- 9:52vehicles, I suggest you look at Xping
- 9:54and other Chinese manufacturers who
- 9:56already have operational machines, in
- 9:57the process of being approved in
- 9:59several regions of the world, which are
- 10:01capable of transporting two to four
- 10:03people over several hundred kilometers.
- 10:06Regarding the vacuum that presses the
- 10:08car to the ground, as we saw, it
- 10:10already existed in 1978. Then, we can
- 10:12debate the definition of innovation.
- 10:15Yes, putting rocket boosters on a car
- 10:16can be seen as an innovation.
- 10:18Personally, I see it more as a
- 10:20demonstration without any real
- 10:21practical application. In this case,
- 10:23you could also put boosters on an iron,
- 10:26a lamp or a lawnmower. But why do it?
- 10:29Now, on a more down-to-earth note,
- 10:30there remains the basic version of this
- 10:32roadster which will therefore be a
- 10:33classic electric sports car. All this
- 10:35with many quotation marks, without
- 10:37boosters or vacuums. An attractive car,
- 10:39which will certainly already be
- 10:41extraordinary to drive, but which will
- 10:43arrive on a market where competitors
- 10:45will have already grabbed a good part
- 10:47of the cake, like the Denza Z, the
- 10:49electric Porsche Caillement which will
- 10:51arrive next year, or even the new BMW
- 10:53M3 and Mercedes AMG GT. Even if the
- 10:55latter two are a little less exclusive
- 10:57because they are not hybrids and,
- 10:59needless to say, the cake of electric
- 11:01sports cars is very small and we are
- 11:03really on a loaf. Then, I saw
- 11:05comparisons with other launches that
- 11:07took place during the same week, or
- 11:09even the same day. Quite strange
- 11:12comparisons, for example with the new
- 11:13electric 2014 and with the new Porsche
- 11:15Mission S. So, let me tell you that
- 11:17these parallels are quite irrelevant,
- 11:19not to say completely out of place.
- 11:22First of all, nothing works for the
- 11:242014. Not the same use, not the same
- 11:25budget, not the same audience, not the
- 11:27same narrative. We could even say that
- 11:29they are all opposites. I'm not
- 11:31specifically defending Citroën, and I
- 11:33even teased them a bit in my previous
- 11:35video, but honestly, being sarcastic
- 11:37about the supposed innovation of the
- 11:39Roadstore by comparing it to the 2CV is
- 11:41completely irrelevant and shows that we
- 11:42don't know much about the automotive
- 11:44industry and marketing. And you know
- 11:47what? There will certainly be a lot
- 11:50more electric Horsepower sold than
- 11:52Roadstores and it will certainly bring
- 11:53in a lot more money for Citroën than
- 11:54the Roadstore will bring in for Tesla,
- 11:56perhaps even in terms of image. On the
- 12:00Porsche Mission S. Then, yes, the car
- 12:01was presented on the same day as the
- 12:03Roadster. So it went a little unnoticed
- 12:05. So how could that possibly cause any
- 12:07problems for Porsche? We're not talking
- 12:09about the same product. The Porsche is
- 12:11a combustion model, for a different
- 12:13clientele and different use. Porsche is
- 12:16aimed at a wealthy clientele of car
- 12:17enthusiasts and enthusiasts of the
- 12:19brand. People who prioritize the
- 12:21pleasure of driving over the bluff of
- 12:23gas-powered vehicles who couldn't care
- 12:25less about flying cars. At worst, they
- 12:27travel in private jets and have a
- 12:28different philosophy about cars than
- 12:30the Twitter geeks. Now, I admit it,
- 12:33it's a shame that this Mission S isn't
- 12:34electric because it would have really
- 12:36ticked all the boxes. The remaining
- 12:39issue is the schedule after the
- 12:41postponements of the first project,
- 12:43from 2017 to 2020 and then 2026. The
- 12:44new deadline isn't really reassuring,
- 12:46especially since Tesla included a small
- 12:48clause in its reservation contract
- 12:50stating that the brand does not
- 12:52guarantee the delivery date, or even
- 12:53that it will ever happen. They are
- 12:56still very strong. For people who have
- 12:58been waiting for years, does the car
- 12:59they reserved still correspond to the
- 13:01one Tesla intends to produce? As we
- 13:03know, the roadstore ultimately occupies
- 13:05a special place in the brand's strategy
- 13:07. Tesla has therefore found a way to
- 13:09rekindle the conversation and, above
- 13:11all, the buzz around its products, even
- 13:13if we still wonder about the true
- 13:14relevance of this roadstore and whether
- 13:16it will really come out one day in
- 13:17these four versions. It also raises
- 13:19questions about what Tesla is really
- 13:21becoming and whether in the long term
- 13:23we will still be able to consider this
- 13:25brand as a purely automotive brand
- 13:27given its expansion into robotics and
- 13:29now even into aerospace. In any case,
- 13:31those who fantasize with so much
- 13:33certainty about the famous Model 2, the
- 13:34small Tesla supposedly planned in the
- 13:36brand's boxes, are out of pocket. It is
- 13:39confirmed that the project never
- 13:40existed other than in their dreams. And
- 13:42without false modesty, this is
- 13:43something I have been saying for years.
- 13:45We will see if the future proves me
- 13:46right or wrong. In any case, I
- 13:49recognize at least that Tesla and more
- 13:51broadly Elon Mosk have a talent, this
- 13:53ability to make the impossible possible
- 13:55and therefore, in a way, to continue to
- 13:57make us dream. And for that alone,
- 13:59whatever one thinks of the character, I
- 14:01say hats off to the artist. There you
- 14:03have it, I hope you now know a little
- 14:04more about this new Tesla Roadstore. If
- 14:07you enjoyed this video, feel free to
- 14:09like, share, comment and subscribe. And
- 14:11see you soon for another video on
- 14:13electric car news.
