- 0:01that makes it right
- 0:03tedded is uh about 2 30 in the afternoon
- 0:07you are scheduled to be executed
- 0:09tomorrow morning at seven o'clock if you
- 0:11don't receive another stay
- 0:13what is going through your mind what
- 0:16thoughts have you had in these last few
- 0:19days
- 0:21well I won't get you to say that it's
- 0:24something that I
- 0:26feel that I am in control of or
- 0:28something that I've come to terms with
- 0:29because I haven't
- 0:31it's a moment by moment thing sometimes
- 0:35I feel very tranquil and other times I
- 0:37don't feel tranquil at all
- 0:41what's going through my mind right now
- 0:43is to use
- 0:44the minutes and hours that I have left
- 0:46as fruitfully as possible and
- 0:50see what happens it helped
- 0:53it helped to live in the moment in the
- 0:54in the essence that we use it
- 0:56productively so I'm right now I'm
- 0:58feeling calm and in
- 1:00large part because I'm here with you
- 1:03for the record you are guilty of killing
- 1:08many women and girls
- 1:11yes yes that's true Ted how did it
- 1:14happen
- 1:15take me back what are the antecedents of
- 1:19the behavior that we've seen
- 1:22so much grief so much sorrow so much
- 1:25pain for so many people
- 1:28where did it start how did this moment
- 1:30come about
- 1:33that's the
- 1:35question of the hour and one that
- 1:38not only
- 1:40people much more intelligent than I have
- 1:42been working on for
- 1:45for years but one that I've been working
- 1:46on for years and trying to understand
- 1:49it
- 1:50is there enough time to explain it all I
- 1:54don't know I think I understand it
- 1:55though understand what happened to me
- 1:59to the extent that I I can see how
- 2:04certain feelings and ideas developed in
- 2:06me to the point where I began to act out
- 2:08on them certain very violent and very
- 2:10destructive feeling let's go back then
- 2:13to those roots first of all you as I
- 2:15understand it were raised in what you
- 2:17consider to have been a healthy home
- 2:20absolutely you were not physically
- 2:22abused you were not sexually abused you
- 2:24are not emotionally abused no no way I
- 2:27and that's part of the tragedy of this
- 2:29little situation is because
- 2:32I grew up in a wonderful home with two
- 2:36dedicated and loving parents one of
- 2:39five brothers and sisters
- 2:42the home where we as our as children
- 2:44were the focus of my parents lives where
- 2:47we regularly attended church to
- 2:49Christian parents who did not drink they
- 2:52did not smoke there was no gambling
- 2:54there was no physical abuse or fighting
- 2:56in the home I'm not saying this was
- 2:59leave at the beaver it wasn't a perfect
- 3:01well no I don't know that such a home
- 3:03exists but it was a fine solid Christian
- 3:06home and nobody uh
- 3:09I hope no one will try to take the easy
- 3:11way out and to try to blame or otherwise
- 3:15accuse my my family of contributing to
- 3:18this because I know and I'm trying to
- 3:20tell you as honestly as I know how what
- 3:22happened and I think this is a message
- 3:24I'm going to get across but as a young a
- 3:27young boy and I mean the boy of 12 13
- 3:31certainly
- 3:33that I encountered outside the home
- 3:35again
- 3:37in
- 3:39the local grocery store or the local
- 3:43drug store the softcore pornography what
- 3:46people call softcore
- 3:48but as I think I I explained to you last
- 3:51night Dr Dobson and an anecdote as young
- 3:53boys do we explored the
- 3:56the back roads and sideways and byways
- 3:59of our neighborhood and oftentimes
- 4:01people would dump
- 4:04the garbage and whatever they're
- 4:05cleaning out of their house and from
- 4:07time to time we come across so
- 4:08pornographic books of a harder nature
- 4:11than more of a graphic you might say a
- 4:14more explicit nature than we would
- 4:15encounter let's say in your local
- 4:17grocery store and this also included
- 4:19such things as let's say detective
- 4:21magazines and uh those that involve
- 4:24violence yes yes and I I and this is
- 4:27something I think that I want to
- 4:28emphasize is the
- 4:31the most damaging
- 4:35kinds of pornography and my again I'm
- 4:37talking from personal experience
- 4:40hard real personal experience most
- 4:42damaging kinds of pornography are those
- 4:44that involve violence sexual violence
- 4:47because the wedding of those two forces
- 4:49as I know only too well brings about
- 4:52behavior that it's just
- 4:57terrible to describe now walk me through
- 4:59that what was going on in your mind at
- 5:01that time okay before we go any further
- 5:03I think it's important to me and
- 5:06and the people the people believe what
- 5:09I'm saying to tell you that that I'm not
- 5:12blaming
- 5:13pornography and not saying that it
- 5:16caused me to go out and do certain
- 5:18things and I take full responsibility
- 5:20for whatever I've done and all the
- 5:22things that I've done that's not the
- 5:23question here
- 5:25the question and and the issue is how
- 5:28this kind of literature contributed and
- 5:31helped mold and and shape the kinds of
- 5:34violent Behavior it fueled your fantasy
- 5:36stuff well in in the beginning it fuels
- 5:39this kind of
- 5:40thought process then at a certain time
- 5:44it's instrumental in what it would say
- 5:46crystallizing it making it making into
- 5:48something which is almost in like a
- 5:50separate entity inside
- 5:53and that in that point you're at The
- 5:55Verge or I was at the verge of acting
- 5:56out on this on this kind of these kinds
- 5:59of things now I really want to
- 6:00understand that you had gone about as
- 6:02far as you could go in your own Fantasy
- 6:05Life with printed material and you made
- 6:09or printed in video or filmed film
- 6:12magazines what happened and then there
- 6:16was the urge to take that little step or
- 6:19big step over to a physical event and it
- 6:23happens it happened in stages gradually
- 6:26it doesn't necessarily not to me at
- 6:28least happen overnight my experience
- 6:31with I'd say pornography generally but
- 6:34with pornography that deals on a violent
- 6:37level with the sexuality
- 6:39is it
- 6:42once you become addicted to it and I
- 6:44look at this as a kind of addiction
- 6:46like other kinds of addiction of
- 6:48addiction you keep I would keep looking
- 6:50for
- 6:51more potent more explicit more graphical
- 6:54signs of material like an addiction you
- 6:57keep craving something which is harder
- 6:59harder something which which
- 7:01gives you a greater sense of excitement
- 7:06until you reach the point where the
- 7:08pornography only goes so far you reach
- 7:12that jumping off point where you begin
- 7:15to wonder if if maybe actually doing it
- 7:18will give you
- 7:20that which is beyond just reading about
- 7:22it or looking at it how long did you
- 7:24stay at that point before you actually
- 7:26assaulted someone well yeah you see
- 7:31that is a very delicate point
- 7:34in my own development and we're talking
- 7:36about something we're talking about
- 7:38having reached the point or a gray area
- 7:40that surrounded that point over a course
- 7:42you don't remember years I would say
- 7:46I would say a couple years and what was
- 7:49I was dealing with there were very
- 7:51strong inhibitions against
- 7:54criminal Behavior or violent behavior
- 7:56that had been conditioned into me and
- 7:58bred into me in my environment in my
- 8:00neighborhood in my church
- 8:02in my school
- 8:04things which said no this is wrong I
- 8:07mean just even to think of it as wrong
- 8:08but it'll certainly to do it is wrong
- 8:10and you're on I'm on that edge in these
- 8:12the last you might say the last vestiges
- 8:15of restraints
- 8:18the barriers to actually doing something
- 8:21were being tested constantly and assault
- 8:24assailed
- 8:26um
- 8:28through the kind of fantasy life that
- 8:30was fueled
- 8:32largely
- 8:34by pornography do you remember what
- 8:37pushed you over that edge
- 8:40do you remember the decision to go for
- 8:42it do you remember where you decided to
- 8:45throw caution to the wind
- 8:51again
- 8:53when you say pushed I don't I know what
- 8:55you're saying I don't want to refer
- 8:56again I understand that that I was that
- 8:59I was some helpless kind of a victim and
- 9:01yet
- 9:03uh
- 9:04we're talking about an influence which
- 9:06that is the influence of violent types
- 9:09of media and violent pornography which
- 9:12hadn't was an indispensable Link in the
- 9:15chain of behavior of the chain of events
- 9:18that led to the behaviorist to the to
- 9:21the assaults to the murders and what and
- 9:23what have you
- 9:25yeah
- 9:27very
- 9:28difficult thing to describe uh
- 9:33the
- 9:35the sensation
- 9:38the the
- 9:40of of reaching that point when where I
- 9:44knew
- 9:47that it was like something had say
- 9:50snapped that I knew that uh
- 9:52that I couldn't control anymore that
- 9:54these barriers that I had had been I'd
- 9:57learned as a child that had been
- 10:00instilled in me were not enough to hold
- 10:01me back with respect to
- 10:04seeking out and harming somebody would
- 10:07it be accurate to call out a a frenzy a
- 10:10sexual frenzy well yes that's one way to
- 10:13describe it a compulsion a
- 10:16a
- 10:20building up of this destructive energy
- 10:23again
- 10:26I another Factor here the way I haven't
- 10:29mentioned is the use of alcohol but I
- 10:32what alcohol did
- 10:34in conjunction with let's say my
- 10:36exposure to
- 10:38pornography with alcohol reduce my
- 10:41inhibitions at the same time
- 10:44the the the fantasy life that were
- 10:47fueled by pornography
- 10:49eroded them further
- 10:51in the early days you were nearly always
- 10:53about half drunk when you did these
- 10:56things is that right yes
- 10:59was that always true
- 11:03I I would say that that was
- 11:06generally the case almost what without
- 11:08it all right if I can understand it now
- 11:10there's this battle going on within
- 11:12there are the conventions that you've
- 11:14been taught there's the right and wrong
- 11:15that you learned as a child and then
- 11:18there is this this unbridled passion
- 11:21fueled by your plunge into hardcore
- 11:26violent pornography and those things are
- 11:28at war with each other yes and then with
- 11:30the alcohol diminishing the the
- 11:34inhibitions
- 11:35you let go well
- 11:38yes and
- 11:41to you can summarize it that way and
- 11:43it's accurate certainly and
- 11:46it just occurred to me that
- 11:48some people would would say that well I
- 11:52I've seen that stuff and it doesn't do
- 11:54anything to me
- 11:55and I can understand that I can
- 11:58virtually everyone
- 12:00can be exposed to so-called pornography
- 12:02and while they're aroused to it to one
- 12:04degree or another and not go out and do
- 12:06anything wrong the addictions are like
- 12:07that they affect some people more than
- 12:09they affect others that there is a
- 12:11percentage of people affected by
- 12:13hardcore pornography in a very violent
- 12:15way and you're obviously one of them
- 12:17that was a major component and I don't
- 12:19know why I was wrong vulnerable to it
- 12:21all I know is that
- 12:24that it had an impact on me that was
- 12:28just so
- 12:32essential to the development of the
- 12:34violent behavior that I engaged in Ted
- 12:37after you committed your first murder
- 12:39what was the emotional effect on you
- 12:42what happened in the days after that
- 12:46foreign
- 12:54please understand
- 12:56that even
- 12:58all these years later is very difficult
- 13:00to talk about it and and relieving it
- 13:03through talking about it to
- 13:06difficult to say the least but I want
- 13:08you to understand what happened it was
- 13:11like
- 13:13coming out of some kind of horrible
- 13:16trance or or dream
- 13:18um
- 13:20I can only liken it to after you know I
- 13:23don't want to over dramatize it but to
- 13:26have been possessed by something so
- 13:29awful and so alien and then the next
- 13:32morning wake up from it remember what
- 13:34happened and realize that basically I
- 13:37mean in the eyes of the law certainly in
- 13:39the eyes of God you're responsible and
- 13:42to have to wake up in the morning and
- 13:45and realize what I had done and with a
- 13:49clear mind and all my Essential
- 13:52moral and ethical feelings intact at
- 13:55that moment
- 13:57uh
- 13:59absolutely horrified
- 14:02that I was capable of
- 14:05doing something like that you really
- 14:07hadn't known that before
- 14:10there is just absolutely no way to
- 14:15describe
- 14:17first
- 14:21the brutal
- 14:22urge to do that kind of thing and then
- 14:26what happens is once it it has been more
- 14:29or less satisfied
- 14:31and recede you might say it was spent
- 14:34that sense that kind of energy
- 14:37the level recedes and basically I became
- 14:40my myself again and I want people to
- 14:43understand this too and I'm not saying
- 14:44this gratuitously because it's important
- 14:46people understand this
- 14:48that basically I was a normal person
- 14:52uh
- 14:53I wasn't some guy hanging out at bars or
- 14:57a bum or I wasn't a pervert in the sense
- 15:00that you know people look at somebody
- 15:01and say I know there's something wrong
- 15:03with him and just tell I mean I I was
- 15:06essentially a normal person I had good
- 15:08friends I I live a normal life it except
- 15:13for this one
- 15:15small but very potent and very
- 15:17destructive segment of it that I get
- 15:18very secret and very close to myself and
- 15:21didn't let anybody know about it
- 15:23and part of the shock and horror from my
- 15:25dear friends and family was years ago
- 15:28when I was first arrested was that they
- 15:29just there was no clue they looked at me
- 15:32and they looked at the you know the the
- 15:35All-American boy and I I mean that
- 15:37wasn't perfect but it was I want to
- 15:39because
- 15:40I was okay
- 15:42okay I was and
- 15:45the basic
- 15:47humanity and basic spirit that God gave
- 15:50me was intact but it unfortunately it
- 15:53became overwhelmed at times I think
- 15:55people need to recognize that it's not
- 15:57some kind of
- 15:59the the those of us who are who have
- 16:03been so much influenced by violence in
- 16:07the medium in particular pornographic
- 16:10violence are not some kinds of inherent
- 16:13monsters we are your sons and we are
- 16:16your husbands
- 16:17and
- 16:19we grew up in regular families and
- 16:22pornography can reach out and snatch a
- 16:24kid out of any house today he snatched
- 16:26me out of my it snatched me out of my
- 16:28home 20
- 16:3030 years ago
- 16:32and as diligent as my parents were
- 16:38and they were diligent in protecting
- 16:41their children
- 16:43and as good a Christian home as we had
- 16:45and we had a wonderful Christian home
- 16:49there is no protection against the kind
- 16:51that the kinds of influences that are
- 16:54loose in the society that tolerates
- 17:01you feel this really deeply don't you
- 17:0510 outside these walls right now there
- 17:09are several hundred reporters
- 17:11that wanted to talk to you yeah and you
- 17:14asked me to come here from California
- 17:17cause you had something you wanted to
- 17:19say
- 17:19this hour that we have together
- 17:23is not just
- 17:26an interview with a man who's scheduled
- 17:28to die tomorrow morning
- 17:30I am here and you're here because of
- 17:33this message that you're talking about
- 17:34right here
- 17:36you really feel that hardcore
- 17:39pornography and the doorway to it soft
- 17:41core pornography
- 17:42is doing Untold damage to other people
- 17:46and causing other women
- 17:48to be abused and killed the way you did
- 17:52others listen I'm no social scientist
- 17:55and I haven't done a survey I mean I I
- 17:57don't pretend that I know what John Q
- 17:59citizen thinks about this
- 18:02but I've lived in prison for a long time
- 18:04now
- 18:07I've met a lot of men who were motivated
- 18:10to commit violence just like me
- 18:12and without exception
- 18:14every one of them was deeply involved in
- 18:18pornography without question without
- 18:20exception deeply influenced and consumed
- 18:23by an addiction to pornography there's
- 18:26no question about it the FBI is on study
- 18:28on serial homicide
- 18:31shows that the most common
- 18:33interest among serial killers
- 18:39and it's and it's real it's true
- 18:41Ted what would your life
- 18:43have been like without that influence
- 18:52speculate yeah well I I know it would
- 18:56have been far better not just for me and
- 18:59and it's excuse me for being so
- 19:02self-centered here it would have been a
- 19:04lot better for me and lots of other
- 19:05people I know that lots of other
- 19:07innocent people
- 19:09victims and families
- 19:11it would have been a lot better there's
- 19:12no question but that it would have been
- 19:15a a fuller life certainly a life that
- 19:19would not have involved
- 19:21I'm absolutely certain would not have
- 19:24evolved involved this kind of violence
- 19:27that I have been that I have committed
- 19:30I'm sure Teddy if
- 19:33you know if I were able to ask you the
- 19:36questions that are being asked out there
- 19:39one of the most important as you come
- 19:41down to perhaps your final hours are you
- 19:44thinking about all those victims out
- 19:47there and their families well you are so
- 19:50wounded you know years later their lives
- 19:52have not returned to normal they will
- 19:54never return to normal absolutely are
- 19:56you carrying that load that way is the
- 19:59remorse there
- 20:04again I know that people will accuse me
- 20:07being self-serving but we're beyond that
- 20:09now I mean I'm just telling you how I
- 20:11feel
- 20:12but through God's help
- 20:15I have been able to come to the point
- 20:16where I've
- 20:20much too late but better late than never
- 20:22feel the hurt and the pain that I am
- 20:25responsible for yes absolutely in the
- 20:28past few days myself and a number of
- 20:30investigators have been
- 20:32talking about unsolved cases
- 20:35murders that I was involved in
- 20:38and it's hard it's hard to talk about
- 20:40all these years later because it revives
- 20:42in me all those terrible feelings and
- 20:45those thoughts that I have
- 20:50steadfastly and and
- 20:53diligently dealt with and I think
- 20:55successfully with the love of God
- 20:58and yet it's reopened that and I felt
- 21:01the pain and I felt the horror again of
- 21:03all that and I can only hope
- 21:07that
- 21:08those who I have harmed
- 21:10those who I've caused so much grief
- 21:15if they don't believe
- 21:17my
- 21:19expression of
- 21:21sorrow
- 21:23will believe what I'm saying now
- 21:27that there is loose
- 21:30in their towns and their communities
- 21:33people like me today
- 21:37who's
- 21:39dangerous impulses are being fueled
- 21:42day in and day out
- 21:45by violence in the media in its various
- 21:47forms particularly sexualized violence
- 21:51and what scares me and let's come into
- 21:54the present now because what I'm talking
- 21:55about happened in 30 20 30 years ago
- 21:59that is in my formative stages and what
- 22:02scares Nepal's me Dr Dobson is when I
- 22:05see what's on cable TV
- 22:08so in the movies I mean some of the
- 22:10violence in the movies uh that come into
- 22:13homes today
- 22:14was stuff that they that they wouldn't
- 22:16show in an x-rated adult theaters 30
- 22:19years ago this stuff
- 22:21slash your movies that you're talking
- 22:23about that stuff is I'm telling you from
- 22:26personal experience the most that is
- 22:29graphic violence
- 22:31on screen
- 22:33particularly as it gets into the home
- 22:35the children who may be unattended or or
- 22:38unaware that they may be a Ted Bundy who
- 22:41has that that vulnerability to that that
- 22:44predisposition to be influenced by that
- 22:46kind of behavior by that kind of of a
- 22:48movie that kind of violence there are
- 22:51kids sitting out there switching the TV
- 22:54dial around and come upon these movies
- 22:56late at night or I don't know when
- 22:57they're on but they're on and any kid
- 22:59can watch them it's scary when I think
- 23:01what would have happened to me if I had
- 23:04seen I was scary enough
- 23:07I mean that I just ran into stuff
- 23:08outside the home but to
- 23:10know that children are watching that
- 23:12kind of thing today or can pick up their
- 23:15phone and dial away for it or send away
- 23:18for it
- 23:20can you help me understand this
- 23:23desensitization process that took place
- 23:25what was going on in your mind well by
- 23:28desensitization I describe it
- 23:32in specific terms is that
- 23:37each time
- 23:39I'd harm someone each time
- 23:41I'd kill someone there'd be an enormous
- 23:42amount
- 23:44especially at first
- 23:46enormous amount of horror Guild remorse
- 23:49afterwards but then their impulse to do
- 23:52it again would come back even stronger
- 23:54now believe me I didn't
- 23:56the unique thing about how this work Dr
- 23:59Dobson is that I still felt
- 24:01in my regular Life the full range of of
- 24:04guilt and remorse about other things
- 24:07regret and you had this
- 24:10compartmentalized this compartmentalized
- 24:12very well focused uh
- 24:15a very sharply focused area where it was
- 24:18like a black hole it was like a you know
- 24:21like a crack and everything that fell
- 24:23into that crack just disappeared
- 24:25does that make sense yeah it does uh one
- 24:28of the the final
- 24:31murders that you committed of course was
- 24:33apparently a little Kimberly Leach 12
- 24:36years of age
- 24:38I think the the public outcry is greater
- 24:41there because an innocent child was
- 24:43taken from a from a playground what did
- 24:46you feel after that
- 24:47what was there
- 24:49were there the normal emotions three
- 24:51days later where were you Ted
- 24:54I
- 25:00I can't really talk about that
- 25:02that's the way
- 25:06it's too painful
- 25:09I would like to
- 25:12like to be able to convey to you what
- 25:15that
- 25:16that
- 25:18experiences like that I can't that I
- 25:20want okay we'll talk about that
- 25:29I can't begin to understand well I can
- 25:32try but I'm I'm
- 25:36aware
- 25:37that I can't begin to understand the
- 25:40pain
- 25:41that the parents of
- 25:44these of these children that I have and
- 25:47these young women that I've harmed feel
- 25:51and I can't restore
- 25:54really much to them if anything
- 25:57and we'll pretend to and I don't even
- 25:59expect them to forgive me and I'm not
- 26:01asking for it that kind of forgiveness
- 26:03is of God and if they
- 26:05they don't well maybe they'll find it
- 26:07someday do you deserve the punishment
- 26:10the state has inflicted upon you
- 26:16a very good question I'll answer very
- 26:18very honestly I I don't want to die I'm
- 26:21not going to catch you I'll kid you not
- 26:24um
- 26:25I deserve certainly the most extreme
- 26:29punishment
- 26:30Society has and I deserve
- 26:33I think Society deserves to be protected
- 26:35from me and from others like me that's
- 26:38for sure
- 26:41I think what I what I hope will come of
- 26:44our discussion is I think Society
- 26:46deserves to be protected from itself
- 26:49because
- 26:51because we as as we've been talking
- 26:53there are there are forces that loose in
- 26:55in this country particularly again uh
- 26:58this kind of violent pornography
- 27:02where on the one hand
- 27:05well-meaning decent people will condemn
- 27:08Behavior
- 27:10of a Ted Bundy while they're walking
- 27:12past a a magazine rack full of the very
- 27:15kinds of things that send young kids
- 27:18down the road to be Ted Bundys that's
- 27:20the irony we're talking here not just
- 27:22about
- 27:24more we're talking on what I'm talking
- 27:25about is going Beyond retribution which
- 27:28is
- 27:29what
- 27:31people want with me going Beyond
- 27:33retribution and Punishment because there
- 27:35is no way in the world that killing me
- 27:37is going to restore
- 27:40uh those beautiful children to their
- 27:42parents and and and correct
- 27:45and and soothe the pain
- 27:48but I'll tell you there are lots of
- 27:50other kids playing in streets around
- 27:51this country today who are going to be
- 27:53dead
- 27:54tomorrow and the next day and the next
- 27:57day and next month because other young
- 28:00people are reading the kinds of things
- 28:01and seeing the kinds of things that are
- 28:03available in the media today Ted as you
- 28:05would imagine there is tremendous
- 28:07cynicism about you on the outside and I
- 28:09suppose for good reason
- 28:11I'm not sure that there's anything that
- 28:13you could say that people would would
- 28:15believe some people would believe yeah
- 28:18and and yet you told me last night and I
- 28:23have heard this through our mutual
- 28:24friend John Tanner that you have
- 28:27accepted the Forgiveness of Jesus Christ
- 28:31and are a follower and a believer in him
- 28:34do you draw strength from that as you
- 28:37approach these Final hours
- 28:39I do
- 28:41I can't say that
- 28:43it's going to be in the the Valley of
- 28:45the shadow of death is is something that
- 28:47I've become all that accustomed to and
- 28:49then I you know and then I'm strong and
- 28:52nothing's bothering me listen it's no
- 28:55fun
- 28:57it's it's you know it's it's a it gets
- 29:00kind of lonely and yet
- 29:04I have to remind myself that every one
- 29:06of us
- 29:08will go through this someday in one way
- 29:10or another and countless Millions who
- 29:14have walked this Earth before us have so
- 29:16this is just an experience which we all
- 29:18share
- 29:20right on
