- 0:00Hi everyone, hope you doing well. Today,
- 0:01we're going to take a kick that sounds
- 0:03like this.
- 0:05And with a simple rack and just a bit on
- 0:07stock plugin, we can transform it into
- 0:09something that sounds like this.
- 0:12Or like this.
- 0:15>> [music]
- 0:16>> Or even like this.
- 0:21>> [music]
- 0:22>> And even like this.
- 0:26Let's jump into Ableton. And the very
- 0:27first thing you need to do is to have
- 0:28audio track so you can do command T or
- 0:30control T. And as input you need to
- 0:32select your kick track and make sure put
- 0:35post effects. So like this you can solo
- 0:36it and just listen to it without having
- 0:38the original kick and put monitor in. So
- 0:41we're going to rebuild this from
- 0:42scratch. So the first device we're going
- 0:44to use is overdrive. The reason why I
- 0:46like to use overdrive with kick is like
- 0:48you have a pre-filter on overdrive. So
- 0:50not only it drives your signal, but the
- 0:52filter is not just like to remove some
- 0:54unwanted frequency. Like really the way
- 0:56you filter before the distortion really
- 0:59add a special character and tone to your
- 1:01distortion. And this works effectively
- 1:04well with kick drum. I'm just going to
- 1:06bring the tone to zero. This is just
- 1:09like a post EQ. And you're going to hear
- 1:11just with drive and how I'm going to
- 1:13move the filter, how it's affecting.
- 1:15>> [music]
- 1:23[music]
- 1:25>> So we're going to group this.
- 1:29And Now I rename everything and recolor
- 1:32like this I don't lose time. And we're
- 1:33going to map the parameter we want.
- 1:35Obviously the filter as it's going to
- 1:37really give character to your drive.
- 1:39We're going to need to map the drive.
- 1:41And finally the dynamic which I find it
- 1:44interesting to change
- 1:48>> [music]
- 1:50>> the tone as well. And we're going to
- 1:52leave the dry weight at 61%. So you
- 1:54might think that sometimes you're going
- 1:55to lose too much low end of your kick,
- 1:57but keep in mind that this can be just a
- 2:00extra layer, so you can just always
- 2:01bring back your original kick later on.
- 2:04Now, we're going to add saturator and
- 2:06we're going to use the sine wave forge.
- 2:08This is very interesting type of
- 2:10saturation because it's kind of folding
- 2:12the big the peaks back into the waveform
- 2:14and that's kind of create a kind of
- 2:16weird metallic and aggressive sound.
- 2:19>> [music]
- 2:22>> Now, here again, we're going to activate
- 2:24the color here because with the color
- 2:26you have this color curve which is
- 2:27basically an EQ where you can decide
- 2:30>> [music]
- 2:33>> that the low can be boosted
- 2:37or removed and same with the high
- 2:39you have
- 2:41>> [music]
- 2:43>> frequency with the
- 2:45>> [music]
- 2:46>> the width. And so here again is the same
- 2:48idea that with the overdrive is to
- 2:50change the tone of your sound before the
- 2:52distortion. So like this it's really
- 2:54color and give a certain character to
- 2:57your overdrive. Now, we're going to map
- 2:58the amount of low to be saturated, the
- 3:01amount of high, the frequency.
- 3:05Now, the Q we're going to leave it fixed
- 3:06to 20 and then saturate
- 3:08shun drive. And now you can already
- 3:10start to play with
- 3:14>> [music]
- 3:22[music]
- 3:30[music]
- 3:40[music]
- 3:45>> Now, usually with this kind of sound
- 3:46it's great to add a bit of reverb. First
- 3:48to make it a little bit less dry, but
- 3:50can also sometimes like give a little
- 3:52bit of that cavernous warehouse type of
- 3:55reverb which is work well on kick. I
- 3:57mean, at least techno kick. So, I have
- 3:59this reverb here with 30% dry wet and
- 4:03700 GK. So, it's not a too long.
- 4:10You can crank up the decay if you want
- 4:12more of this cavernous effect. By
- 4:13default, I just leave it like down
- 4:15because I really want to be just like
- 4:17make the the the kick feel a little bit
- 4:19less dry and kind of emphasis a little
- 4:21bit the transient make the kick brief.
- 4:24Yeah. Now, we're going to add one of my
- 4:25favorite device which is basically the
- 4:27drum bus. The reason why I usually like
- 4:30the drum bus is just puts everything way
- 4:32much more in your face and you can do
- 4:34that mainly because of the compressor.
- 4:38>> [music]
- 4:41>> So, this going to be dependent of your
- 4:43input signal as well. You could maybe
- 4:45use the low drive
- 4:48in certain case, but I haven't touched
- 4:50this because then because if you rack
- 4:52it, it will work just for a certain type
- 4:53of kick and bring your kick in the
- 4:55certain direction where I wanted the
- 4:56rack to be still being able to be useful
- 4:58different type of kick be a bit more
- 5:00versatile. So, now we're going to move
- 5:02the transient to the rack to be able to
- 5:05map it because they're going to hear how
- 5:07the transient actually work on the
- 5:10sound.
- 5:16>> [music]
- 5:18>> So, it's not just about having more or
- 5:20less transient. You can see how here it
- 5:22kind of like almost gated a little bit
- 5:24of reverb and make the sound a little
- 5:26bit more clean and tight where
- 5:30>> [music]
- 5:33>> here it's kind of bring the little bit
- 5:35more everything up, make it a bit more
- 5:37aggressive, too. Now, finally, the last
- 5:39things I add it's a corpus processor
- 5:41created. It's like it's called air base
- 5:43because it's based on the air base
- 5:45plugin from Waves which is using a
- 5:47resonator to basically generate a low
- 5:50frequency. So, here it's basically 45
- 5:53hertz which is like F sharp and it's
- 5:55kind of just boosting the bass
- 5:56basically. You're going to hear we're
- 5:58going to map it
- 5:59the air base here.
- 6:01>> [music]
- 6:03>> Great way to have bass. So, here what
- 6:05I'm going to do is I'm going to click on
- 6:06the map and I'm going to put the maximum
- 6:08to 50% because it doesn't need to be
- 6:10higher than that. Otherwise, that's just
- 6:12too much. And now we got our rack. So,
- 6:13one thing I have did is I removed the
- 6:15transient from randomization and I
- 6:17removed the air bass from randomization.
- 6:19But now you can just like randomly
- 6:21>> [music]
- 6:29[music]
- 6:31>> And so now we have that we can listen in
- 6:33the context of a track.
- 6:34>> [music]
- 6:41[music]
- 6:48[music]
- 6:56[music]
- 7:01>> Create new sound. Now, one thing you can
- 7:03do obviously is add other effect. I
- 7:05could have take the the rack further for
- 7:07example and adding war which can be
- 7:09really interesting. I have some kick
- 7:11present that work pretty well with.
- 7:14>> [music]
- 7:20[music]
- 7:24>> So, yeah. That's pretty much it. This
- 7:25rack will be available for free to
- 7:27everyone. Now, if you part of my Patreon
- 7:29member, you will also get uh all the
- 7:31preset I made. So, hope you like this
- 7:33video. Thank you very much for watching
- 7:35and see you next time. Bye-bye.
