  2. 0:10hello welcome to Tennessee's at home
  3. 0:12learning series for math today's lesson
  4. 0:15is for all of our seventh graders out
  5. 0:16there though all children are welcome to
  6. 0:18tune in this lesson is the first in our
  7. 0:21series my name is Kayla Anderson and I'm
  8. 0:24an eighth grade teacher in Tennessee
  9. 0:25Schools I'm so excited to be your
  10. 0:27teacher for this lesson welcome to my
  11. 0:29virtual classroom today we will be
  12. 0:31learning about creating and evaluating
  13. 0:33expressions to analyze real-world
  14. 0:35situations in mathematics before we get
  15. 0:38started to participate fully in our
  16. 0:40lesson today you will need paper pencil
  17. 0:44and a surface to write on okay let's
  18. 0:49begin today we will be reviewing
  19. 0:52expressions and how they can help us in
  20. 0:55the real world to reach a solution
  21. 0:57recall the difference between
  22. 1:00expressions and equations so I'm gonna
  23. 1:03write some vocabulary words and their
  24. 1:05definitions on the board it may be a
  25. 1:07good idea for you to go ahead and jot
  26. 1:09down those words in their definition
  27. 1:10somewhere on your paper so that you have
  28. 1:13them to refer back to as the lesson
  29. 1:15progresses because they will not be on
  30. 1:17the board the entire time so again we're
  31. 1:20going to be recalling the difference
  32. 1:22between expressions and equations so
  33. 1:25your first vocabulary word is
  34. 1:28expressions
  35. 1:35on your second vocabulary word is
  36. 1:38equations so recall that the main
  37. 1:45difference between an expression and an
  38. 1:47equation is that expressions do not have
  39. 1:50an equal sign
  40. 1:51whereas equations do have an equal sign
  41. 2:06and I think that's the equ a in the word
  42. 2:12equations and the equ a in the word e
  43. 2:17all can help you to remember that
  44. 2:19equations do have an equal sign so to
  45. 2:22pause for just a second so that you can
  46. 2:23write all definitions down if you'd like
  47. 2:25to
  48. 2:34to accompany those oh cab you Larry
  49. 2:37words and the definition that we have
  50. 2:38there let's also write some examples so
  51. 2:41because an expression does not have an
  52. 2:42equal sign something like 3 X or 4 y
  53. 2:48plus 6 those are two examples of
  54. 2:52expressions because they do not have
  55. 2:54equal signs examples of equations would
  56. 2:57be taking these expressions and having
  57. 3:01an equal sign and something on the other
  58. 3:02side so 3x equals 7 or 4y plus 6 equals
  59. 3:103y plus 2 these two are equations
  60. 3:14because they do have equal signs whereas
  61. 3:17this one is an expression because it
  62. 3:18does not have an equal sign so I'll
  63. 3:20pause for a second in case you'd like to
  64. 3:22write those down
  65. 3:34so the third vocabulary word that we're
  66. 3:36going to add is variable and remember
  67. 3:43that a variable is just a placeholder
  68. 3:45for an unknown value
  69. 4:04typically we use a letter to represent a
  70. 4:08variable so in the expressions that we
  71. 4:10have here X is the variable and Y is the
  72. 4:14variable they're letters that represent
  73. 4:16an unknown value in our equations again
  74. 4:19x and y are the variables they're
  75. 4:23they're placeholders for values that we
  76. 4:26don't know if you'd like to raise some
  77. 4:28additional examples of variables out to
  78. 4:30the side here you could use X you can
  79. 4:33use Y you could use and really any
  80. 4:36number aramis cute excuse me any letter
  81. 4:38it's going to be a placeholder for that
  82. 4:40unknown value so you want to jot any of
  83. 4:42them down go ahead and do that
  84. 4:50okay so have you ever wondered how you
  85. 4:53could save money and make sure you have
  86. 4:55enough minutes and text to talk to your
  87. 4:57friends writing expressions to model
  88. 5:00real world problems can be very powerful
  89. 5:02and helpful in making decisions let's
  90. 5:05take a look at an example John's father
  91. 5:07asked him to compare several different
  92. 5:09cell phone plans and identify which plan
  93. 5:11will be the least expensive for the
  94. 5:13family
  95. 5:14each phone company charges a monthly fee
  96. 5:16but this speed doesn't cover any
  97. 5:19services like phone lines texting or
  98. 5:22internet access we're going to use the
  99. 5:24information given in this table to
  100. 5:26answer some questions it's go ahead and
  101. 5:31take a look at the table you'll notice
  102. 5:33that we have three different companies
  103. 5:34to choose from and that we are
  104. 5:37discussing monthly fee price per phone
  105. 5:40line price per line for unlimited
  106. 5:42texting and price per line for internet
  107. 5:45access we're going to use expressions to
  108. 5:47save money while still getting the best
  109. 5:49phone plate all the members of the
  110. 5:52family may not want identical plans
  111. 5:54therefore we're going to let X represent
  112. 5:56the price per phone line y is going to
  113. 6:00represent the price per line for
  114. 6:02unlimited texting and these going to
  115. 6:05represent the price per line for
  116. 6:07internet access let's take a look at
  117. 6:14company a company a charges $70 at the
  118. 6:18monthly fee for the 1500 shared minutes
  119. 6:22company a also charges $20 per phone
  120. 6:26line $15 per line for unlimited texting
  121. 6:30and 15 dollars per line for internet
  122. 6:33access your job is to write an
  123. 6:36expression using these variables x y and
  124. 6:40z to represent what company a will
  125. 6:44charge again it's an expression not an
  126. 6:47equation and remember from our
  127. 6:48definitions that equations have equal
  128. 6:50signs but expressions do not so when you
  129. 6:53write your expression for Company A
  130. 6:54using the variable
  131. 6:55X Y & Z you're not going to have an
  132. 6:58equal sign so I'm going to pause and
  133. 7:00give you some time to write down an
  134. 7:01expression to represent what company a
  135. 7:03will charge
  136. 7:42okay so let's take a look at what you
  137. 7:44were able to come up with for company a
  138. 7:46so to represent company a's to write an
  139. 7:49expression for company a i am going to
  140. 7:51have a seventy dollar fee for the 1500
  141. 7:56chair minutes plus $20 for every line
  142. 8:02for every phone line which I'm going to
  143. 8:04use X to represent plus 15 dollars per
  144. 8:10line for unlimited texting or using the
  145. 8:12variable Y for that plus 15 dollars per
  146. 8:16line for internet access and we've used
  147. 8:19Z so your expression should be seventy
  148. 8:23plus 20 X plus 15 y plus 15 Z does yours
  149. 8:29match that good remember that your terms
  150. 8:34may be in a different order because
  151. 8:36addition is commutative which means it
  152. 8:38doesn't matter what order we add these
  153. 8:40things in as long as we have the same
  154. 8:42terms we're going to get the same answer
  155. 8:45so let's analyze this really quickly
  156. 8:47just to make sure we understand what
  157. 8:48these pieces represent again $70 is just
  158. 8:51that fee that you're going to pay for
  159. 8:53the 1500 minutes that you're sharing $20
  160. 8:57is the price for every line and we're
  161. 8:59using the variable X to represent that
  162. 9:03$15 is the price per line for unlimited
  163. 9:06texting which we're using the variable Y
  164. 9:08to represent and $15 is the price per
  165. 9:11line for internet access which we're
  166. 9:12using the variable Z to represent okay
  167. 9:17so now we're going to do that same thing
  168. 9:18again but this time we're going to write
  169. 9:21an expression for Company B so if we
  170. 9:22take a look at the chart
  171. 9:24Company B charges $90 for that 1500
  172. 9:27shared minutes
  173. 9:28Company B charges $15 per phone line ten
  174. 9:32dollars per line for unlimited texting
  175. 9:35and $20 per line for internet access so
  176. 9:39your job this time is to again write an
  177. 9:42expression which won't have an equal
  178. 9:43sign using variables XY and Z and to
  179. 9:47represent Company B if you need to you
  180. 9:50can look back at the expression that we
  181. 9:51wrote for company a to help you out go
  182. 9:53ahead and try that now
  183. 10:32all right let's take a look at what you
  184. 10:34did for Company B so the monthly fee for
  185. 10:40Company B is $90 plus $15 per phone line
  186. 10:49plus $10 for unlimited texting plus $20
  187. 10:58per line for internet access so for
  188. 11:02Company B you should have 90 plus 15 X
  189. 11:05plus 10y plus 20 Z okay and remember
  190. 11:11keep in mind that this is commutative
  191. 11:12which means if yours is in a different
  192. 11:14order it's okay as long as you have
  193. 11:15those same terms okay so we have one
  194. 11:22last one to do and this time we need to
  195. 11:25write an expression to represent Company
  196. 11:27C so we take a look at the chart company
  197. 11:29C charges us $200 for those 1500 shared
  198. 11:33minutes Company C also charges us $10
  199. 11:36per phone line however company sees a
  200. 11:39little bit different because the price
  201. 11:41per line for unlimited texting and the
  202. 11:44price per line for internet access are
  203. 11:45both included in the monthly fee so your
  204. 11:49job again is to write an expression for
  205. 11:52Company C using the variables XY and Z
  206. 11:55in order to represent what they're gonna
  207. 11:57charge us now be careful with this one
  208. 11:58it's a little bit trickier since these
  209. 12:01two since these two options are included
  210. 12:03in the monthly fee I'm going to pause
  211. 12:05and let you go ahead and write an
  212. 12:06expression for Company C
  213. 12:41all right let's take a look at what you
  214. 12:43were able to come up with for company C
  215. 12:44so for company C we do have a two
  216. 12:47hundred dollar monthly fee for those
  217. 12:481500 share minutes so two hundred plus
  218. 12:53we're also gonna pay ten dollars per
  219. 12:56film on but this time the line for a
  220. 13:01limited texting the price for unlimited
  221. 13:02texting and the price for internet
  222. 13:03access are both already included in that
  223. 13:05monthly fee so we're not going to have a
  224. 13:08Y or Z variable in this one because
  225. 13:11they're already included so it shouldn't
  226. 13:13you should have two hundred plus 10x
  227. 13:16okay so now that we have all of our
  228. 13:19expressions we're going to use them in
  229. 13:20order to analyze the different scenarios
  230. 13:23so let's see which plan is best for our
  231. 13:27certain same scenario so we're going to
  232. 13:29have let me jot this don't worry we're
  233. 13:32going to have for people who want phone
  234. 13:35lines so for phones we're going to have
  235. 13:43for people who want unlimited texting so
  236. 13:46for for texting and we're going to have
  237. 13:52two people who want internet lines and
  238. 13:59we're gonna use the three expressions
  239. 14:00that we just wrote in order to figure
  240. 14:02out which one of these companies is
  241. 14:04going to be the best one to go with for
  242. 14:07our specific scenario so I'm gonna help
  243. 14:10you out with company and you just start
  244. 14:12out with so let's go back to our
  245. 14:14expression for company a again it's an
  246. 14:17expression got n equations and there's
  247. 14:18no equal sign so this section is solved
  248. 14:21so for company a we're gonna have a
  249. 14:25seventy dollar fee for the 1500 shared
  250. 14:29minutes plus 20 dollars for every phone
  251. 14:33line and we want we're gonna have four
  252. 14:36people that want phone lines plus
  253. 14:39fifteen dollars for everyone with a
  254. 14:43limited texting we also have to work on
  255. 14:45those plus
  256. 14:48fifteen dollars for every line with
  257. 14:51internet and we're going to have two of
  258. 14:53those so before we move on with the math
  259. 14:56let's make sure you understand where
  260. 14:57these numbers came from seventy dollars
  261. 14:59for that one thousand five hundred
  262. 15:01cheered minutes twenty dollars per phone
  263. 15:04line we have four of them
  264. 15:05fifteen dollars per line for a limited
  265. 15:08texting we have four of those as well
  266. 15:10fifteen dollars for everyone with
  267. 15:12internet access and we have two of those
  268. 15:14so now that we've substituted some
  269. 15:17values for our variables we're going to
  270. 15:19go ahead and do the math so we've got 70
  271. 15:22plus 20 times 4 which is 80 plus 15
  272. 15:28times 4 which is 60 plus 15 times 2
  273. 15:33which is 30
  274. 15:44and then adding all of those together we
  275. 15:47figure out that company a is going to
  276. 15:49charge us two hundred and forty dollars
  277. 15:52so for this specific scenario using
  278. 15:55Company A we would have to pay two
  279. 15:56hundred and forty dollars okay now what
  280. 15:59I'd like for you to do is using this
  281. 16:01same scenario figure out what it's going
  282. 16:03to cost us to four to use Company B so
  283. 16:07you can look back what we did for
  284. 16:08company a if you need some help gonna
  285. 16:10pause now while you try out company
  286. 16:56alright let's go ahead and see what you
  287. 16:57write look I'm up with four Avenue B so
  288. 17:02for Company B we know that section is we
  289. 17:06know that we have the $90 that we're
  290. 17:09going to have to pay for the 1500
  291. 17:11minutes plus 15 X X in this case
  292. 17:16represented the price per phone line and
  293. 17:18we do want four phone lines so we're
  294. 17:20going to substitute for in place of that
  295. 17:22X plus $10 for every line of unlimited
  296. 17:28texting which was y and we do have four
  297. 17:32of those who are on place Y with 4 and
  298. 17:34then plus $20 for every line with
  299. 17:37internet access and we did want two of
  300. 17:40those so we're going to replace Z with
  301. 17:43two so $90 for them 1500 chaired minutes
  302. 17:4815 dollars for every line we have four
  303. 17:51lines $10 for every line with a limited
  304. 17:54texting we have four lines with texting
  305. 17:56and then 20 dollars for every line with
  306. 18:00internet access and we do have two of
  307. 18:01those hey so when we do the math we're
  308. 18:07gonna have 90 plus 15 times 4 which is
  309. 18:1016 plus 10 times 4 which is 40 plus 20
  310. 18:17times 2 which is also
  311. 18:27okay and so adding all those together we
  312. 18:30do come up with two hundred and thirty
  313. 18:33dollars so Company B would charge us two
  314. 18:36hundred and thirty dollars in this
  315. 18:37scenario so the last thing to do now is
  316. 18:40to figure out for this particular
  317. 18:43scenario
  318. 18:43what is Company C in a charge us I'm
  319. 18:45going to pause while you figure that out
  320. 19:16okay so let's check your work for
  321. 19:18company seat so company see we have two
  322. 19:22hundred plus ten X so we have two
  323. 19:25hundred dollars for those 1500 minutes
  324. 19:28that we're sharing plus ten dollars for
  325. 19:31every line which was X we know that we
  326. 19:33want for phone lines so we're gonna
  327. 19:35substitute for in place of X when we're
  328. 19:39talking $200 for the 1500 shared minutes
  329. 19:42ten dollars for every line we do have
  330. 19:45four lines so we do the math here 200
  331. 19:51plus 10 times 4 which is 4200 plus 40
  332. 19:57gives us 240 dollars okay so now we've
  333. 20:05done the math we figured out what all
  334. 20:07three of these companies will charge us
  335. 20:08for this scenario which company should
  336. 20:10we choose and why if you think somebody
  337. 20:16B you are correct company a and Company
  338. 20:19C are both gonna cost two hundred and
  339. 20:21forty dollars all Company B only costs
  340. 20:24two hundred and thirty dollars so we're
  341. 20:25gonna save $10 by choosing Company B
  342. 20:28good work so now we're going to have now
  343. 20:36we're gonna have another scenario for
  344. 20:38you to practice with all right so you
  345. 20:46didn't though same expression that we
  346. 20:49used before we have a different scenario
  347. 20:50this time so this time we are going to
  348. 20:55have four people that want fauxmance so
  349. 20:58for four months we're gonna have four
  350. 21:05people that one texting and then
  351. 21:12everybody is also going to want internet
  352. 21:13so how many phones are with Internet of
  353. 21:15unity yep we need four of them so for
  354. 21:19internet so for this scenario for five
  355. 21:22months for texting for internet okay
  356. 21:27so I'm gonna worry about company a and
  357. 21:31you work along with me and then I'll
  358. 21:32give you a chance to work out Company B
  359. 21:34and Company C to figure out which one of
  360. 21:36these works better so we're using those
  361. 21:39same expressions that we came up with
  362. 21:41for our scenario before so for company a
  363. 21:44that was 70 plus 20 X plus 15 y plus 15
  364. 21:57Z
  365. 21:58okay so we're using that same expression
  366. 22:01remember it's an expression so it
  367. 22:02doesn't have an equal sign
  368. 22:04this time we want for plug months we
  369. 22:07have this $70 fee for the 1500 minutes
  370. 22:13$20 for every line and we have four
  371. 22:15lines plus fifteen dollars for unlimited
  372. 22:19texting we have four people that want in
  373. 22:21the minute texting plus fifteen dollars
  374. 22:24for everyone that wants internet and we
  375. 22:26have four people that want internet
  376. 22:28anapana so you can jot that down okay
  377. 22:35so doing the math here we come up with
  378. 22:3770 plus 80 plus 60 plus 60 when we add
  379. 22:44those together we do come up with a
  380. 22:48second double check myself when we come
  381. 22:50up with when we add those together we do
  382. 22:52come up with 270 dollars so for four
  383. 22:56lines for texting for Internet company a
  384. 22:59is gonna charge us two hundred and
  385. 23:00seventy dollars so now what I'm going to
  386. 23:02do is pause so that you can work out
  387. 23:04what Company B is going to charge for
  388. 23:06this situation if you need some help
  389. 23:08look back at what we did for company a
  390. 23:09while you're working I'm going to go
  391. 23:11ahead and write the expression up here
  392. 23:12so that we're ready to go
  393. 23:44okay so just like we did with company a
  394. 23:46we have the $90 fee plus $15 per line
  395. 23:51move four lines plus $10 per line for
  396. 23:55texting we have four people to love
  397. 23:57texting and $20 per line for Internet
  398. 24:00and we have four people that one
  399. 24:02internet so the back 90 plus 60 plus 40
  400. 24:09plus 80 and that does give us two
  401. 24:19hundred and seventy dollars so Company B
  402. 24:22is also gonna cost two hundred and
  403. 24:24seventy dollars last one here is Company
  404. 24:26C you need to figure out from this
  405. 24:28situation what company C is gonna charge
  406. 24:30us I will pause while you figure that
  407. 24:32out while you're working I'll go ahead
  408. 24:33and write the expression
  409. 24:50so we are going to do 200 plus 10 X in
  410. 24:53this case so 200 for the 1500 minutes
  411. 24:58plus $10 for every line do you have four
  412. 25:00lines doing the math that gives us 200
  413. 25:04plus 40 which gives us 240 dollars okay
  414. 25:14hope you got that one all right so now
  415. 25:19that we've figured out what each of the
  416. 25:21three companies is going to charge us
  417. 25:23for four phone lines before texting and
  418. 25:25for Internet which company would you
  419. 25:27choose for this situation and why you're
  420. 25:32right you should choose company C you
  421. 25:35can save $30 by choosing company C in
  422. 25:38this case good work everybody
  423. 25:41so I hope that you were able to see how
  424. 25:43expressions assist us to make good
  425. 25:45choices in the real world these are
  426. 25:47skills that you will continue to use
  427. 25:48throughout your life today we were
  428. 25:51reviewed creating and evaluating
  429. 25:53expressions to analyze real world
  430. 25:56situations we review that the major
  431. 25:58difference between an expression and an
  432. 26:00equation is that equations have equal
  433. 26:02signs while expressions do not we also
  434. 26:05reviewed that a variable is just a
  435. 26:07placeholder for an unknown value even
  436. 26:08that most of the time traditionally we
  437. 26:11use letters for variables I hope you're
  438. 26:14seeing some connections to equal groups
  439. 26:16and repeated addition in multiplication
  440. 26:18you really did a good job today after
  441. 26:20the video you will have some problems to
  442. 26:22practice on your own good luck and do
  443. 26:25your best
