Teaching Myself Electronics (Part Two) — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Remember how I said that I needed to
- 0:01teach myself electronics in order to get
- 0:02into grad school?
- 0:04No?
- 0:05Well, then go watch the video then.
- 0:10After a few conversations with a bunch
- 0:12of advisers and faculty members, because
- 0:14apparently it takes 20 people to answer
- 0:15one question, it turns out that I don't
- 0:17actually have to take any classes
- 0:19beforehand to get into grad school. I
- 0:21can just take them while I'm there.
- 0:25So, all the hard work from my first
- 0:26video just straight into the trash can.
- 0:28So, I decided that instead of spending
- 0:30my summer studying in my room by myself,
- 0:32all alone, I was going to enjoy my
- 0:34summer [music] and go to the beach and
- 0:35hang out with my family and do all the
- 0:37things that I am not going to be able to
- 0:39do once I go to grad school. However,
- 0:41you see after all my years in college,
- 0:42there is something that I have learned,
- 0:44an unsettling truth. And it's that
- 0:46professors, more often than not,
- 0:49don't know how to do their jobs. Now, I
- 0:51have high hopes.
- 0:53Actually, scratch that. I have moderate
- 0:55hopes, medium hopes,
- 0:57average hopes, that my professors at NYU
- 0:59will be good. But, I have been
- 1:01disappointed
- 1:02way too much in my life. And so, just in
- 1:05case, I'm going to resume my studies
- 1:08in electronics. [music]
- 1:09And what better way to resume something
- 1:11that I haven't done in almost 3 months
- 1:14than by taking a test [music] to see
- 1:15what I know and what I don't know
- 1:18and figuring things out from there.
- 1:20Let's go.
- 1:25So, I found this book online, and before
- 1:27I even can get to the contents, it tells
- 1:29me that I should take this [music] test
- 1:30that it offers. If I pass it, I can move
- 1:32on to the rest of the book because I
- 1:33have sufficient knowledge. If I don't, I
- 1:35should pause, study, and then come back
- 1:38to [music] take the test again, and then
- 1:39move forward from there. And some of you
- 1:41might be thinking, "Maria, didn't you
- 1:42just spend a whole video studying
- 1:43Arduinos and stuff like that? Shouldn't
- 1:45you know about basic electronics?"
- 1:48No. See, I took physics 2 a while back,
- 1:50and that taught me some of the basics.
- 1:52And then I took the Arduino course, but
- 1:53that didn't teach me anything other than
- 1:56how to use the Arduino. I feel like I'm
- 1:58lacking a lot of knowledge, [music] and
- 1:59so that's why I'm taking a step back
- 2:01from the Arduino and going back to the
- 2:03basics. [music] And I'm going to start
- 2:05by taking this test.
- 2:09>> [music]
- 2:10>> I have the test pulled up. I have my
- 2:12physics review guide in hand. I have a
- 2:14whiteboard where I can write down some
- 2:16of my answers, and I'm going to keep a
- 2:18tally of everything that I get right and
- 2:20everything that I get wrong. So, without
- 2:22further ado,
- 2:23let's begin. Uh electrical and
- 2:25electronic devices work because of an
- 2:27electric current. What is an electric
- 2:29current? Okay. Electric current is the
- 2:32movement of electrons through a specific
- 2:34surface area, but current can be
- 2:37described in two different ways. In the
- 2:39past, we didn't really know that it was
- 2:40the electrons moving through the wire,
- 2:42and so we thought there was a positive
- 2:44charge moving, which technically there
- 2:46is if you consider that the electrons
- 2:49moving leave like a positive charge gap
- 2:53moving in an opposite direction, but
- 2:55traditional current flow is electrons
- 2:59moving from negative to positive, but
- 3:01what we describe as electrical current
- 3:04is from positive to negative. So, it's
- 3:06confusing. Am I right? Electrical
- 3:09current is a form of electric charge.
- 3:11Electric charge usually consists of
- 3:12negatively charged electrons. However,
- 3:14in semiconductors, there's also
- 3:15positively charged carriers called
- 3:17holes.
- 3:19I was freaking. Do I just keep a tally?
- 3:21Write at least three ways an electron
- 3:24flow or current can be generated. Ooh.
- 3:27Voltage difference between two points,
- 3:30and then you connect those two points.
- 3:32But, I mean a battery causes that. I'm
- 3:34going to put battery. Can't really think
- 3:36of anything. What else can
- 3:38create a flow of electrons? Okay, let's
- 3:40see what the answer is. Oh, wait, you
- 3:42can also cause Oh, oh, I didn't I did
- 3:45not read this, I swear. You can cause
- 3:46electric current by a magnetic field.
- 3:49I'm so stupid. You can induct induce it.
- 3:52It just popped into my head as I was
- 3:54reading the first sentence, but then it
- 3:55says magnetically. Okay, so I'm not
- 3:57going to give that to the point to
- 3:58myself. Let's see. Chemically.
- 4:00Oh, photovoltaic
- 4:02generation of electrons, thermal. Yeah,
- 4:05I only have one point here. I'm not
- 4:07going to give myself this point cuz I
- 4:08feel like I got magnetically, but only
- 4:11after I saw it. Chemically was the only
- 4:13one I got correct with the batteries.
- 4:15I'm going to speed through some sections
- 4:16because it really is just a lot of math
- 4:18involved. Okay. Let's see if my math is
- 4:21correct. Oh.
- 4:23It is correct. 10 11.2, 10, and 30.
- 4:27Another point for me.
- 4:29I was debating on trying to explain this
- 4:31in a professional and teacher-esque
- 4:33manner, but then I decided not to
- 4:35because you could literally Google any
- 4:37of this online and you're going to find
- 4:38already a really good channel explaining
- 4:40this. So, basically, I'm going over
- 4:41Ohm's law, power formula, Kirchhoff's
- 4:43law, resistors, and the voltage divider.
- 4:46All the basics. At this point, the only
- 4:48two questions I got wrong was the one
- 4:49about current sources and a little bit
- 4:52of issue doing the mathematica for
- 4:54Kirchhoff's law. But, I've done all this
- 4:56before. It's just a lot of math and
- 4:58understanding the math. Until this.
- 5:01This is where I don't know any formula
- 5:04because I don't actually remember really
- 5:05learning this in class. Do I have
- 5:07anything? Do I have a formula here?
- 5:13Mhm.
- 5:16I think I just realized what I'm going
- 5:17to do. So, what I'm going to do is I'm
- 5:19going to learn about capacitors and I'm
- 5:21going to take this part of the test
- 5:23again because I genuinely don't know how
- 5:25to answer any of these questions. I
- 5:26don't know what a Yeah, inside a
- 5:27capacitor.
- 5:29So, out of 33, 30 out of 33, 90%.
- 5:36>> [music]
- 5:38>> I'm pleasantly surprised that I did
- 5:39pretty well on the exam except for like
- 5:42two questions-ish. And then I already
- 5:44knew that I didn't know anything about
- 5:45capacitors, so
- 5:47we just got to learn that now. But,
- 5:49before I can get into studying, I've got
- 5:51to do something more important.
- 5:55I've got to finish packing.
- 5:57>> [sighs]
- 5:58>> Okay, let's do it.
- 6:00>> [music]
- 6:07[music]
- 6:29[music]
- 6:39[music]
- 6:49>> I have moved in. Classes are going to
- 6:51start this Monday. It is currently
- 6:54Friday, and I'm going to study just a
- 6:57little bit, you know, just just a little
- 6:59bit beforehand. Boom. Going to take my
- 7:01textbook. Where is it? There it is.
- 7:04Electronics notebook. This is my the
- 7:06start of my notes about capacitors and
- 7:08capacitance.
- 7:10We're going to continue the notes about
- 7:11capacitors and capacitance. I spent
- 7:13about an hour reading about capacitors,
- 7:15thinking that I got the basics down, and
- 7:17then deciding that, you know what? I'm
- 7:19just going to take the test right now.
- 7:20You know, I'm not going to wait, and I'm
- 7:21not going to redo the first section. I'm
- 7:23just going to start off where the
- 7:24capacitors are, cuz [snorts] I read
- 7:26everything, and I should be good.
- 7:29Right? To what final voltage will the
- 7:30capacitor charge?
- 7:33Oh, 10. I won't even have to do an
- 7:35equation because it will charge [music]
- 7:37to the amount the battery has. But, I
- 7:39quickly realized that I didn't study
- 7:40well enough.
- 7:41>> To answer you must know what the time
- 7:43constant is. The most time constant of a
- 7:45circuit.
- 7:47>> What? I have no idea. Oh, I see it.
- 7:50Okay, never mind. I was
- 7:52going to read this part here. We're
- 7:53going to find out what it is.
- 7:54Let's read this entire section. Yeah, so
- 7:56skimming a website did not do anything,
- 7:58so I decided to pull out my fat textbook
- 8:00and actually read it. And lo and behold,
- 8:02I actually understood what capacitors
- 8:04are. Now, once again, there's just a lot
- 8:06of math involved as I do a bunch of
- 8:07different formulas, so I'm not going to
- 8:08get into it, but overall, I finished the
- 8:10test with a decent average of a 93. It's
- 8:13not 100%, but I'll take it for now.
- 8:17I mean, there's a lot of things that I
- 8:18think I need to learn right now. Number
- 8:20one, more [music] about capacitors.
- 8:22Number two, I feel like I don't really
- 8:24know much about AC currents, either. I
- 8:25mean, there's a lot. I've got like 3
- 8:27days, and there's so much that I want to
- 8:29really work on. I mean, most of which
- 8:32I'm I'm going to be doing during the
- 8:34semester, but I feel like it's always
- 8:37good to just [music] do it right now.
- 8:38And then, first And then, the lastly,
- 8:40the other thing I want to do is I really
- 8:41want to
- 8:42>> [music]
- 8:42>> start doing some hands-on projects
- 8:45because reading books is great and all,
- 8:47but that's not really going to teach
- 8:48[music] you what is actually going on
- 8:50when you do when you're dealing with
- 8:52real circuits. I'm going to keep
- 8:54studying, and I would show you that, but
- 8:57it it's really boring. [music]
- 8:58Like, I'm I'm going to try my best right
- 9:00now to make this not boring at all, but
- 9:02I am at the end of the day just reading
- 9:03a book and studying. And when I do that,
- 9:05I also don't really care about being a
- 9:08YouTuber and being like, "So, what I'm
- 9:10learning right now is this"
- 9:12>> [music]
- 9:12>> If you want to really learn this stuff,
- 9:14don't look at me to teach you it. There
- 9:15already exists fantastic [music]
- 9:16channels online that teach you all of
- 9:18this information. I'm just showing you
- 9:20guys what I'm doing, and I want [music]
- 9:22to document my progress so that when I
- 9:24in 2 years' time have my degree in
- 9:26engineering, I can look back and be
- 9:27like, [music] "Wow, she was stressed for
- 9:30so much and yet so little." So, that's
- 9:32my goal is to look back and be like,
- 9:35"Everything was fine." And yeah, I'll
- 9:37see you guys [music] in the next video.
- 9:43>> [music]
