  1. 0:04hello welcome back what' you think of
  2. 0:07that video
  3. 0:09huh it's a great video I've watched that
  4. 0:12thing so many times it it makes you
  5. 0:17think so let's look
  6. 0:22here so remember the video did contain
  7. 0:26some offensive language okay we got you
  8. 0:29got forgive third graders right you just
  9. 0:32gota right but I wonder would they make
  10. 0:37the same statements as
  11. 0:40adults did you listen to them I don't
  12. 0:44think any one of them I didn't hear a
  13. 0:46single person there in the group say
  14. 0:48well you know what I don't like these
  15. 0:51people yeah it was inter How likely were
  16. 0:54they to violate title
  17. 0:567 like not also what if they did it
  18. 1:00accidentally we still know that it's the
  19. 1:02bosses that Supreme Court says employers
  20. 1:04are responsible for the actions of their
  21. 1:06employees they're responsible for the
  22. 1:07actions they knew about or they should
  23. 1:09have known about so they should have
  24. 1:11known about this but at the same
  25. 1:16time what else can you do I mean there's
  26. 1:19only so much stuff you can it's like
  27. 1:22your health right you
  28. 1:25can eat all the right Foods exercise do
  29. 1:29everything the way you're supposed to do
  30. 1:30and still knock off kick off by the time
  31. 1:33you're 12 I mean it's just yeah it's so
  32. 1:37it is a risk but
  33. 1:39also if you have a
  34. 1:43strategy and you've done everything you
  35. 1:45can
  36. 1:47do Jerry's usually say what else could
  37. 1:50you
  38. 1:52do but if you wait till you get caught
  39. 1:56that's when you have the problems that's
  40. 1:57when you can't defend yourself
  41. 2:00right it's like uh you're driving down
  42. 2:02the road in a 60 M hour Zone and you're
  43. 2:04going
  44. 2:0680 and you wait till you get caught then
  45. 2:09you get a ticket for going 20 miles over
  46. 2:11the speed limit don't you right but if
  47. 2:13you slow down and go 60 the whole time
  48. 2:16or 61 or 62 I know how that works too
  49. 2:19but you're not you're not going to have
  50. 2:21problems and then if if a cop pulls you
  51. 2:23over for going 61 miles an hour in a
  52. 2:2760 and wants to give you ticket for one
  53. 2:30mile an hour first off that happens very
  54. 2:34very
  55. 2:35rarely and if it does you can go to you
  56. 2:39go to the judge and what's the
  57. 2:41possibility the judge is going to
  58. 2:42enforce that one mile an hour now I know
  59. 2:45there are some little cities where they
  60. 2:46do that but they they don't right you
  61. 2:49can say hey I didn't my kids were
  62. 2:51screaming in the back there's a thousand
  63. 2:53excuses that you have for one mile an
  64. 2:55hour do you have many excuses for going
  65. 2:5820 miles an hour over over this speed Li
  66. 3:01well a you my mom's in the back seat
  67. 3:04dying from a heart attack well maybe
  68. 3:06that's a good one to go for for but it's
  69. 3:10kind of tough so when we're watching the
  70. 3:13video so she was 100% successful with
  71. 3:15the kids at least for me I didn't see
  72. 3:17any of those kids missed the point now
  73. 3:20how long did it take the kids to fall
  74. 3:25for her
  75. 3:27game huh it was a very clear answer if
  76. 3:31you watch that
  77. 3:33video they gave a very specific answer
  78. 3:36they said in 15 minutes she says I
  79. 3:39watched how in the span of 15 minutes
  80. 3:40they turned in from wonderful children
  81. 3:42to nasty little
  82. 3:45Nazis
  83. 3:46wow 15 minutes and she's 100% successful
  84. 3:51then you watch the second part of that
  85. 3:55video
  86. 3:57yeah the second part the video um she
  87. 4:01asked one of those guys she says were
  88. 4:04you surprised at how uncomfortable you
  89. 4:06were in the first half an hour and the
  90. 4:08guy responds I was amazed at how
  91. 4:12uncomfortable I was in the first 15
  92. 4:16minutes wow so kids and adults both fell
  93. 4:22for her now now you say well she told
  94. 4:24the kids it was a game she didn't tell
  95. 4:26the adults come on you go to a meeting
  96. 4:31you're a government
  97. 4:33employee you go to a
  98. 4:35meeting mandatory meeting and they say
  99. 4:38blue PE people with blue eyes are
  100. 4:41inferior bad stupid ugly people who
  101. 4:45smell
  102. 4:46bad wouldn't you know something's up I
  103. 4:50mean come on you say well Barat gets
  104. 4:52lots of people I know he does but come
  105. 4:56on you go to a meeting your boss says
  106. 4:59okay instead of working at your office
  107. 5:00today I want you to go to this meeting
  108. 5:02and it says oh blueeyed people are
  109. 5:04really bad and stupid and ugly and all
  110. 5:06these terrible
  111. 5:08things wouldn't you figure out
  112. 5:10something's up I mean really and it had
  113. 5:13signs blue eyes are bad I mean you you'd
  114. 5:16figure that out and they fell for it
  115. 5:19still within 15
  116. 5:21minutes wow they knew it was a setup
  117. 5:25they still fell for it in 15 minutes now
  118. 5:28I like watching this video I've watched
  119. 5:30it so many
  120. 5:32times the second question I have for you
  121. 5:34is how successful was she so we I hope
  122. 5:38you agree that she was very successful
  123. 5:39with the kids I mean 100% successful
  124. 5:43with the kids they all got it right but
  125. 5:46was she with the
  126. 5:51adults okay so remember when you're
  127. 5:54watching the video and that one woman
  128. 5:56got in a real big argument with the
  129. 5:58teacher right the whole whole time I
  130. 6:00mean they're just arguing back and forth
  131. 6:02and back and forth and back and forth
  132. 6:04and um watching the
  133. 6:07video and she just gets so mad doesn't
  134. 6:09she right then after it was over so
  135. 6:13remember they made people with blue eyes
  136. 6:14put on collar so that they could see the
  137. 6:16colors of their eyes right then after it
  138. 6:19was over and they had lunch and they're
  139. 6:22doing kind of a a you know a reflecting
  140. 6:26on kind of what happened the teacher
  141. 6:29goes through and talks to all the people
  142. 6:32and almost all of them had her call
  143. 6:34their collars still
  144. 6:36on except there was one person who
  145. 6:40didn't didn't it it was that woman who
  146. 6:43got in a big argument fight with the
  147. 6:46teacher now so so why did she take why
  148. 6:49was she the only one who took her collar
  149. 6:55off then when it came time when they're
  150. 6:58doing the debriefing it comes time for
  151. 7:00her to talk she says
  152. 7:03well you don't need this for no
  153. 7:06discrimination she says I uh when you
  154. 7:10get older you know what discrimination
  155. 7:12like I don't need to be a a black person
  156. 7:15or a brown person to know what it's like
  157. 7:17to feel discrimination wait wait wait a
  158. 7:19second stop just stop for a
  159. 7:21second she was basically saying that she
  160. 7:25knows what it's like to be a black
  161. 7:27person she knows what it's like to be
  162. 7:30Asian person she knows what it's like to
  163. 7:32be an
  164. 7:34Aboriginal really okay I know what it's
  165. 7:37like to be a beautiful
  166. 7:42woman
  167. 7:44no can I ever understand what it's like
  168. 7:47to be a
  169. 7:49woman can I understand what it's like to
  170. 7:51be an ugly woman I can't I I
  171. 7:53cannot have that experience I'm never
  172. 7:56going to have that experience okay so
  173. 7:58she's arguing she says oh you don't need
  174. 8:00to know about this wait a second wait a
  175. 8:07second I have a problem with that How
  176. 8:10likely is she to violate title
  177. 8:147 not more so than some of the other
  178. 8:18people but so she missed the point of
  179. 8:20the whole exercise right she says oh I
  180. 8:22know what it's like no no no I don't
  181. 8:25care that she missed the point of the
  182. 8:27exercise I care why she missed the point
  183. 8:30of the
  184. 8:32exercise now it now it's really when I
  185. 8:35teach this class in person I always get
  186. 8:38people say well she had a closed mind
  187. 8:40and she was a bigot and she was wait a
  188. 8:45second
  189. 8:47stop it's really easy to blame her isn't
  190. 8:50it stop take a breath for a second was
  191. 8:55it her
  192. 8:56fault yeah she had a close mind no
  193. 9:00actually if you remember the first part
  194. 9:03of the
  195. 9:04video when when they first come in
  196. 9:07wasn't she the first person who said
  197. 9:09this bigotry and blue eyes people and
  198. 9:12all is bad wasn't she the one that stood
  199. 9:15up out of all the group she stood up and
  200. 9:17she says no this is wrong we should you
  201. 9:20can't do this this is bad right so she
  202. 9:24was the most vocal saying that
  203. 9:27discrimination is wrong at the beginning
  204. 9:29and at the end she says well I know what
  205. 9:31it's like to be am
  206. 9:35myor something changed didn't it she
  207. 9:37actually instead of going the right dire
  208. 9:39she actually went the wrong direction
  209. 9:43she missed it didn't she it can say well
  210. 9:45she no she really she was making an
  211. 9:48argument at the beginning she made the
  212. 9:49argument because this is really powerful
  213. 9:51this is important at the beginning she's
  214. 9:53making an argument she says this is
  215. 9:55wrong stop it don't do it and then she
  216. 9:58says well oh you know what I know what
  217. 10:00it's
  218. 10:02like wow wow and then that other woman
  219. 10:06in there says you don't know what it's
  220. 10:07like you don't know what it's like to be
  221. 10:09a black woman waking up every day and
  222. 10:11say you can't know what it's like
  223. 10:14exactly but why did she miss
  224. 10:17it that's what I care about why did she
  225. 10:20miss
  226. 10:22it whose fault was it the teacher oh yes
  227. 10:28it was the teacher's fault
  228. 10:30oh that teacher was it was completely
  229. 10:33the it's easy to blame her is it it's
  230. 10:35easy to blame it was the teacher's
  231. 10:38fault right absolutely now let's think
  232. 10:41about the
  233. 10:42kids we showed the video of the kids
  234. 10:44first didn't we so they've got the video
  235. 10:47of the kids the kids got a chance to be
  236. 10:49in both
  237. 10:51groups right they got used to be in both
  238. 10:53groups um where's my
  239. 11:00so kidss got a chance to be in both
  240. 11:04groups did the
  241. 11:06adults no no no there's a there's an old
  242. 11:10myth they say that you only use 10% of
  243. 11:13your
  244. 11:14brain that is a myth if anybody says you
  245. 11:17only use 10% of your brain they are
  246. 11:19wrong you use 100% of your brain that's
  247. 11:22what your brain is there for but you use
  248. 11:26different parts of your brain for doing
  249. 11:30different things for instance if you
  250. 11:32have a concussion bunk on the head and
  251. 11:34it kills the part of your brain that you
  252. 11:35use to see you are now blind even though
  253. 11:39your eyeballs work your brain cannot
  254. 11:41process that right or it has you ever
  255. 11:44met somebody who had a stroke all of a
  256. 11:46sudden they can't use part of their one
  257. 11:48side of their body or their speeches
  258. 11:50alert because those parts of the brain
  259. 11:52died and the other parts of the brain
  260. 11:54takes a while for them to to rewire and
  261. 11:56sometimes they can never rewire so you
  262. 11:59use all of your brain no matter what
  263. 12:02somebody tells you right but what's more
  264. 12:04interesting is they can actually tell
  265. 12:07what parts of your brain you are using
  266. 12:10at any moment it's called a spec scan if
  267. 12:12you care about it I don't care it's
  268. 12:13called a spec scan but what they do is
  269. 12:15they inject you with a radioactive sugar
  270. 12:18and then they look at what parts of your
  271. 12:20brain are eating that sugar and that's
  272. 12:22where you're doing all the processing so
  273. 12:24they can actually tell what part of your
  274. 12:25brain you're using so
  275. 12:29little chart
  276. 12:31here here's your
  277. 12:34brain there's your brain right turns out
  278. 12:38when you're in a bad mood there's a
  279. 12:40little spot in your brain that gets very
  280. 12:44active right it does a lot of processing
  281. 12:47right so you're just going all this this
  282. 12:49little part of your brain is just going
  283. 12:50crazy right right now this is your
  284. 12:53brain when you're in this is when you're
  285. 12:56in a bad mood right so your brain when
  286. 12:58you're in a bad mood is like
  287. 13:00that when your brain when you're in a
  288. 13:03good mood your brain is like
  289. 13:06that did you know that you are
  290. 13:08physically smarter when you're in a good
  291. 13:11mood you are you are physically smarter
  292. 13:15when you're in a good mood that's pretty
  293. 13:17crazy stuff so so they say don't drive
  294. 13:20and talk on the cell phone right even
  295. 13:22handsfree you driving and talking on the
  296. 13:24cell phone is not a good idea
  297. 13:27right maybe
  298. 13:30if you're driving and you're having a
  299. 13:32pleasant conversation with your friends
  300. 13:35you're probably okay because your brain
  301. 13:36is bigger but what if you get
  302. 13:39mad you don't have enough brain power
  303. 13:42there to drive the car still have you I
  304. 13:44like I like to
  305. 13:46call this little brain stupid
  306. 13:50mad you ever gotten stupid mad you know
  307. 13:53what I'm talking about right so stupid m
  308. 13:55is where you're so mad you can't even
  309. 13:57think so you're driving down the road
  310. 13:59and somebody whips in front of you and
  311. 14:00you hit the brakes and you almost crash
  312. 14:02into and you go that guy cut me off you
  313. 14:05get stupid man and you know you're
  314. 14:07stupid right you know it right you
  315. 14:09cannot control it you're still
  316. 14:13going wow you're actually physically
  317. 14:17dumb when you're in a good mood when
  318. 14:20you're smiling did you know when you
  319. 14:21smile you actually increase blood flow
  320. 14:23to your brain no this is a physiology
  321. 14:25class isn't it but you're actually in a
  322. 14:27better mood you're you're it makes you
  323. 14:29into a better try frowning walk around
  324. 14:31like this for half an hour you will get
  325. 14:33a headache right if you ever get a
  326. 14:36headache try smiling it will help part
  327. 14:38of that headache go
  328. 14:40away W great little trivia there right
  329. 14:43now let's think about that
  330. 14:46so that
  331. 14:48woman did she have a good
  332. 14:53day do you think she enjoyed anything
  333. 14:55about that
  334. 14:57experience I don't I don't I bet you
  335. 15:01when she came home she opened the door
  336. 15:04and her little kitty goes meow and she
  337. 15:05proba kicks the cat right because she
  338. 15:07was so
  339. 15:09upset yeah yeah yeah now the kids they
  340. 15:12got a chance to be in both sides didn't
  341. 15:14they right adults okay have been harder
  342. 15:17I I don't know how she would have done
  343. 15:18it but harder but at the same time think
  344. 15:21about that woman she was humiliated
  345. 15:24wasn't
  346. 15:26she wow she was humiliated did she
  347. 15:30deserve to be
  348. 15:32humiliated she actually was humiliated
  349. 15:35because she made the right response
  350. 15:37originally so the teacher actually
  351. 15:39taught her to do it the other way around
  352. 15:42now let's watch let's think about the
  353. 15:43video the video did the kids first and
  354. 15:47everybody's watching him watching the
  355. 15:49kids and the kids said I hate him I hate
  356. 15:52him good right and we're laughing at the
  357. 15:56kids and they're fun and you can see
  358. 15:58that they're having some troubles with
  359. 16:00this but it's kind of light and because
  360. 16:02they're kids and it's fun to watch kids
  361. 16:03even when they say some bad words it's
  362. 16:05still when my son says
  363. 16:08truck it's we laugh and giggle he
  364. 16:11doesn't know what he's actually say
  365. 16:14so they got a chance to have both brains
  366. 16:17didn't
  367. 16:18they and they showed that first now
  368. 16:20imagine that video if they had done the
  369. 16:22adults
  370. 16:24first it wouldn't have worked would it
  371. 16:27because that teacher was pretty much a
  372. 16:30mean person there with the adults with
  373. 16:32some of those adults was she was where's
  374. 16:35your parents and she's asking oh I mean
  375. 16:37that was pretty terrible but the way the
  376. 16:40video was set up is you got the happy
  377. 16:42brain at first you got to watch the kids
  378. 16:44hit him I hit him in the gut and you
  379. 16:46watch that little
  380. 16:48kid they were fun to watch then you saw
  381. 16:52the adults right so your your brain was
  382. 16:55happy and then it got so I love watching
  383. 16:58people watch the
  384. 16:59I'm a people Watcher especially when it
  385. 17:01comes to this video when I when we're
  386. 17:03watching the kids everybody's they're
  387. 17:05leaning forward and they're laughing and
  388. 17:07stuff like this then they go with the
  389. 17:09adults I see people with their arms
  390. 17:12crossed I see people with their legs
  391. 17:14crossed I see people that
  392. 17:17laugh you can just feel the tension in
  393. 17:21the room when it comes to the adult
  394. 17:23section think about how terrible that
  395. 17:25video would have been if they showed the
  396. 17:28adult section
  397. 17:30first okay now that woman never got a
  398. 17:33chance to feel good did
  399. 17:36she she didn't now they also said
  400. 17:39something I said to I said I told you
  401. 17:41that companies that Embrace title 7 that
  402. 17:43Embrace diversity make more money and
  403. 17:46there's a reason for
  404. 17:47this so let's look back back at our
  405. 17:50brain so there was a part in in the
  406. 17:52video and the teacher
  407. 17:55said when the kids were doing the card
  408. 17:58packs you know the the flashcards for
  409. 18:00addition or words or whatever it was
  410. 18:02they said when they were on the bottom
  411. 18:04group their performance was low when
  412. 18:06they were in a top part their
  413. 18:08performance was
  414. 18:10higher now this makes sense doesn't it
  415. 18:12because if you're in the top group and
  416. 18:14you're feeling good about yourself your
  417. 18:15brain's actually bigger and you're
  418. 18:17smarter and everything and when you're
  419. 18:19in low group you're stupid yeah you
  420. 18:21stupid angry you get the point right but
  421. 18:24then here's what was interesting they
  422. 18:26said they sent it to Stanford and review
  423. 18:29and they found out that after the
  424. 18:30experiment was over the student
  425. 18:33performance was even higher throughout
  426. 18:36the academic year now think this is this
  427. 18:39is amazing think about this they were
  428. 18:42actually smarter at the end of this
  429. 18:46experiment wouldn't you love to take a
  430. 18:48class where in two days you were going
  431. 18:50to be significantly smarter for the rest
  432. 18:53of the year and she says we don't know
  433. 18:55why that happened actually we do
  434. 18:59actually we
  435. 19:00do
  436. 19:03so he said this is your stupid mad brain
  437. 19:08this is your happy
  438. 19:13brain and this is your brain on
  439. 19:18drugs no no no but think about she said
  440. 19:23that they kept saying we felt like a
  441. 19:26family right we knew how to hurt each
  442. 19:29other we knew what it felt like and we
  443. 19:30knew we weren't going to do that
  444. 19:33again now how would you like to work for
  445. 19:36a company that treats you as a member of
  446. 19:38the family they said we Embrace
  447. 19:41diversity we like this stuff you can
  448. 19:44help us make more money right I told you
  449. 19:48about my ex- sister-in-law she helped
  450. 19:50the company make a lot more money right
  451. 19:53now when you go to to a a place like
  452. 19:55that and you see some disabled people
  453. 19:57working
  454. 19:59doesn't it kind of make you want to help
  455. 20:02the company out a little
  456. 20:03bit I don't know if you're a brown
  457. 20:06person and you go to a store and you see
  458. 20:08brown people working there doesn't it
  459. 20:11make you a little bit more comfortable
  460. 20:12than if everybody looks so hav have you
  461. 20:15ever I've traveled all over the world
  462. 20:17I've been to a lot of time a lot of
  463. 20:19situations where I'm the only one that
  464. 20:21looks like this I mean I am it thousands
  465. 20:24of people I am the only one that looks
  466. 20:26like this
  467. 20:28it's it it always makes you feel a
  468. 20:30little weird you just it's not scary
  469. 20:33it's just it you you you just it gets
  470. 20:36you a little bit off balance and when
  471. 20:37you're a little bit off balance your
  472. 20:39brain isn't working so they said we were
  473. 20:41kind of like a family now what's going
  474. 20:43to happen if you're working would you
  475. 20:44rather work for a company that treats
  476. 20:45you like a robot treats you like a
  477. 20:47criminal or treats you like a family
  478. 20:50member family so they start to you start
  479. 20:53to actually get smarter at the longer
  480. 20:56you've been working with in this company
  481. 20:58and you start to look forward to go to
  482. 21:01work so remember I told you in the in
  483. 21:03the like second day of class I said
  484. 21:06students who are involved in student
  485. 21:08government and student clubs see their
  486. 21:11grades go
  487. 21:13up this is why because if you got all
  488. 21:16your family your friends then you want
  489. 21:18to come on campus don't you what if you
  490. 21:20don't know anybody your first day
  491. 21:22remember your first day of class come
  492. 21:23going to school you didn't know anybody
  493. 21:26you're like what everybody's
  494. 21:29and then toward you go towards the end
  495. 21:30of the quarter everybody's laughing and
  496. 21:32giggling and having fun it's a lot more
  497. 21:33fun isn't it it's the same way with work
  498. 21:37so they actually make more
  499. 21:40money wow wett later on here here in the
  500. 21:44little bit you're gonna see how
  501. 21:45tremendously powerful this is this isn't
  502. 21:48just weird Andy stuff this is stuff
  503. 21:50that's GNA kick kick off pretty crazy
  504. 21:54so there's a uh phrase called sneak
  505. 21:57around and catch people doing things
  506. 21:59right see a lot of people try to catch
  507. 22:02you doing things
  508. 22:03wrong cops primarily cops policemen
  509. 22:08their job is to stop you from breaking
  510. 22:10the law right now they do other other
  511. 22:12great stuff but that's their main
  512. 22:15mission right you're driving down the
  513. 22:18road and you see the lights behind you
  514. 22:20is it ever a happy situation do you ever
  515. 22:22go like oh yeah I you're not because
  516. 22:26you're like oh no what did I do wrong
  517. 22:29the tail light out my plates valid
  518. 22:32where's that silly insurance card right
  519. 22:35you're like going you got a thousand
  520. 22:37things going through your brain right
  521. 22:39and it makes your brain shrink down and
  522. 22:41the policeman says Hi how are you doing
  523. 22:43today and you
  524. 22:44go because your brain is stupid and
  525. 22:47you're small and you're you're you're
  526. 22:48nervous and yeah got so there's a
  527. 22:54management there he says instead of
  528. 22:55sneak around catch people doing
  529. 22:57something wrong try to catch people
  530. 22:59sneak around and doing things right now
  531. 23:01we've all seen the videos where the
  532. 23:04policemen do something help people do
  533. 23:07find out they've done something right
  534. 23:08they do act of kindness and they way
  535. 23:10more they don't get the ticket they do
  536. 23:11act of kindness there's a couple TV
  537. 23:13shows where you've got some some judges
  538. 23:15and they say let's talk about your
  539. 23:16speeding ticket and then they giggle and
  540. 23:18laugh and they the judge says okay let's
  541. 23:20forget the speeding ticket you're going
  542. 23:22yeah that's kind of kind of good I like
  543. 23:24how that works right same thing so we
  544. 23:26used to have this shop this store in
  545. 23:28United States clo Future
  546. 23:31Shop they are gone right you do not see
  547. 23:35them in the United States they filed for
  548. 23:37bankruptcies because fugure shop taught
  549. 23:40their employees how to
  550. 23:42steal that's why they're gone now you
  551. 23:44can see them up in
  552. 23:45Canada uh but you can't see them in the
  553. 23:47United States because of inventory theft
  554. 23:50so I went to Future Shop once and I was
  555. 23:52going to buy a microwave oven they had
  556. 23:54an ad for a microwave oven and it was
  557. 23:56like a hundred bucks and so I go in in
  558. 23:58there with a hundred bucks and I walk up
  559. 24:00to an employee says Hey I want to buy
  560. 24:02this microwave in this
  561. 24:04ad and the guy says to me we don't have
  562. 24:10any go no the ad just came out right
  563. 24:14that just came out he says we don't have
  564. 24:16any I said you know I drove a long way
  565. 24:19to come in to buy this can you go in the
  566. 24:21back and look the inventory and see if
  567. 24:23he can find it he says sure he comes
  568. 24:26back he says we have two I said well I'd
  569. 24:32like one please he
  570. 24:33says okay come over with me it goes to
  571. 24:37computer he types into the computer he
  572. 24:39types for a little bit he says what's
  573. 24:41your name I said Andy types in Andy
  574. 24:46what's your last
  575. 24:48name Johnson I'm thinking why does he
  576. 24:51want my last name to buy a computer I'm
  577. 24:52going to pay cash right he says what's
  578. 24:55your address I said I don't want to give
  579. 24:57you my address I don't want on your
  580. 24:58mailings or extended warranties or
  581. 25:01anything like that it's just I just I
  582. 25:03just want to pay cash he says got to
  583. 25:05have your address I said I don't want to
  584. 25:06give you my address there's no reason
  585. 25:08I'm paying cash he says I cannot sell it
  586. 25:11to you unless you give me your
  587. 25:13address I go that's
  588. 25:16weird okay so I gave him my
  589. 25:19address so then he says see that line
  590. 25:22over there I go yeah he goes go stand in
  591. 25:27it okay to puss my goodness so then I go
  592. 25:30stand in the line to the next person he
  593. 25:32was in a little bit better mood but not
  594. 25:35much and he's asking everybody for their
  595. 25:38name and their address comes up to me he
  596. 25:40says what's your name what's your
  597. 25:41address I say I already told the other
  598. 25:43guy on the computer he says I know it
  599. 25:44computers can't talk to each other I
  600. 25:47have to enter it in it's weird I don't
  601. 25:49know why I have to enter it in this
  602. 25:51computer I'm sorry
  603. 25:53right okay so I give him my address now
  604. 25:57what's going going on here you're going
  605. 25:59to find out so then I go to the cashiers
  606. 26:04which is right at the at the door right
  607. 26:07and um I go standing in line and the
  608. 26:09manager manager thing is taking
  609. 26:12everybody's
  610. 26:14information and then they have the
  611. 26:16product brought up right he's asking
  612. 26:18everybody what's your name and what's
  613. 26:20your address so three times they asked
  614. 26:23me my name and address okay so now I'm
  615. 26:28in line and the store starts to close
  616. 26:30and you know how that works right they
  617. 26:32start to do one of these numbers on you
  618. 26:33they start turning off all the lights
  619. 26:35and you're like going oh okay time to
  620. 26:37get out of here that's what they were
  621. 26:38doing right so they're closing up turn
  622. 26:40off all the
  623. 26:41lights and I'm I'm close to the doorway
  624. 26:44and all the employees have to leave
  625. 26:46through the front
  626. 26:47door right but before they leave they do
  627. 26:51a little dance with the
  628. 26:54boss and I got to watch him
  629. 26:57dance and the way they do
  630. 27:00that is the guys lean over against the
  631. 27:04wall and the manager pets them down
  632. 27:09right goes over their whole body right
  633. 27:13if there are woman they still get fed
  634. 27:16felt up by the creepy
  635. 27:18boss no women not only got felt up by
  636. 27:22this creepy boss he would open the purse
  637. 27:25up and look through the contents of the
  638. 27:27purse and as a customer I could see the
  639. 27:30contents of their
  640. 27:34purse
  641. 27:37wow how would you feel working at that
  642. 27:40place well I know how I feel working at
  643. 27:43that place little tiny brain right
  644. 27:46little tiny
  645. 27:48brain okay how many of us would feel
  646. 27:51humiliated working they're getting felt
  647. 27:54up by the
  648. 27:56boss wow wow wow so you saidwell I don't
  649. 27:59really care you don't huh can you
  650. 28:01imagine if your one of your parents or
  651. 28:03your friends come pick you up after work
  652. 28:05to go see a movie or something and they
  653. 28:08see you get felt
  654. 28:10up I tell you what if I'm your friend
  655. 28:13and I'm picking you up and I see you
  656. 28:14getting felt up I say oh that looked
  657. 28:16like a nice rub if your boss just gave
  658. 28:18you would you give one to me just like I
  659. 28:21mean you know you're going to have fun
  660. 28:22with it you're going to mess with them
  661. 28:24and they're going to
  662. 28:25be tiny dot great now they were doing
  663. 28:29that to
  664. 28:30stop their employees from stealing right
  665. 28:34the reason they entered it your my name
  666. 28:37and address in three different computers
  667. 28:39is they were tracking the inventory as
  668. 28:41it went from one place to the next
  669. 28:44trying to find out where it went away
  670. 28:47was a theft control device terrible
  671. 28:49theft control device it didn't work now
  672. 28:51let's say we're working
  673. 28:54there and we have one person in the
  674. 28:57store that knows how to get stuff past
  675. 29:00the boss so let's say it's me right so
  676. 29:03we're all we've got 20 people we all
  677. 29:05work there at the stores were humiliated
  678. 29:07on a daily
  679. 29:09basis and all of a sudden you realize
  680. 29:13that I know how to get stuff past the
  681. 29:16system you're humiliated on a daily
  682. 29:19basis are you going to tell on
  683. 29:25me probably not in fact could I start to
  684. 29:29become the hero of the
  685. 29:32office yeah D get some more steal some
  686. 29:35stuff from me I don't even care if I
  687. 29:36want it get did you just see what
  688. 29:39happened they trained their employees to
  689. 29:42steal that's not what they were trying
  690. 29:43to do was it no they weren't trying to
  691. 29:46train their employees to they were
  692. 29:47trying to train their employees not to
  693. 29:49steal but they ended up training their
  694. 29:50employees to
  695. 29:54steal the teacher trained that woman
  696. 29:58to violate title 7 didn't mean to that's
  697. 30:01what which that's what ended up
  698. 30:04happening
  699. 30:06wow Airlines okay there's two airlines
  700. 30:09that we want to talk about one is called
  701. 30:12Delta Delta Delta is what's called a
  702. 30:14long hul
  703. 30:17carrier
  704. 30:20so
  705. 30:22Delta makes their airplane
  706. 30:25flights like that
  707. 30:28big long
  708. 30:31distance and then you have another
  709. 30:33company called Southwest Airlines
  710. 30:36Southwest Airlines is a short hop
  711. 30:40carrier so here's a short hop right so
  712. 30:43Southwest and
  713. 30:45Delta
  714. 30:47now what are the two most dangerous
  715. 30:50times on an airplane
  716. 30:54flight takeoff and Landing those are the
  717. 30:58two most dangerous that's when people
  718. 30:59die more than anybody else right um so
  719. 31:04Southwest Airlines has a significantly
  720. 31:09more dangerous business model right yet
  721. 31:14they're one of the safest Airlines to
  722. 31:16fly okay so Southwest Airlines until
  723. 31:19just recently had only two deaths from
  724. 31:24airplanes so one of the death came from
  725. 31:28the the airplane was taking off during a
  726. 31:31snowstorm and one of the passengers
  727. 31:33decided he didn't want to wear his seat
  728. 31:35belt so they were trying to take off
  729. 31:38during the snowstorm they said nope not
  730. 31:40going to happen so they aborted and they
  731. 31:43skid It Off The Runway and crashed right
  732. 31:46so he went flying through the air bunked
  733. 31:49his head and died so that's one fatality
  734. 31:52they have also they had a the second
  735. 31:54fatality was after they ran off the
  736. 31:57Runway they had a car and killed
  737. 31:59somebody in the car so they had two and
  738. 32:01then fairly recently there was an
  739. 32:04accident where one of the
  740. 32:08engines like ate a bird or something
  741. 32:10like that and it broke the engine and a
  742. 32:13piece of the engine flew through the
  743. 32:15window of the airplane broke the window
  744. 32:18and then it sucked the woman who was
  745. 32:20sitting there out the window and die
  746. 32:22right so three deaths right let's look
  747. 32:26at Delta
  748. 32:33so okay six crew members 83 passengers
  749. 32:39killed okay 11 crew members 128 of the
  750. 32:44152
  751. 32:46killed two of the seven crew members
  752. 32:49killed 12 of the passengers killed you
  753. 32:52you you see a trend here 26 passengers
  754. 32:55were killed 137 passengers were killed
  755. 32:5826 passengers were killed 47 air
  756. 33:01passengers were killed 125 passengers
  757. 33:04were
  758. 33:06killed
  759. 33:10wow
  760. 33:12wow
  761. 33:14um yeah yeah yeah Delta Delta filed
  762. 33:19bankruptcy in
  763. 33:202005 okay they filed for bankruptcy in
  764. 33:242005 okay when they filed bankruptcy
  765. 33:26they said hey we're too big to fail
  766. 33:30right United States needs this they said
  767. 33:32Government Federal Government would you
  768. 33:34give us a bailout would you give us some
  769. 33:36money because we're going to go under if
  770. 33:37you don't give us some money so the
  771. 33:39government gave them some
  772. 33:41money A lot of times when the government
  773. 33:43gives you a bailout like that you don't
  774. 33:45necessarily pay it
  775. 33:48back Southwest Airlines at at in5 the
  776. 33:52government said hey Southwest Airlines
  777. 33:53we had to give Delta some money and we
  778. 33:55gave some other airlines money how much
  779. 33:57do you need
  780. 33:58and they said we don't need any money
  781. 34:01we're
  782. 34:02profitable we've been Prof in fact they
  783. 34:04operated for 17 years without a loss
  784. 34:07until 2008 which we know what happened
  785. 34:092008 the economy sank and they had
  786. 34:11purchased fuel on What's called the
  787. 34:13Futures Market which means that they
  788. 34:15bought the fuel in advance and then the
  789. 34:17price of fuel dropped but they were
  790. 34:19paying more than everybody else and so
  791. 34:21it was a financing problem and then they
  792. 34:23came back to profitability shortly after
  793. 34:26that and they're they a very profitable
  794. 34:28company so now they're safer they're
  795. 34:31more
  796. 34:32profitable wow what's the difference
  797. 34:34between these two so I was flying on a
  798. 34:35Delta Airline flight it was an
  799. 34:37international
  800. 34:39flight we we land in CAC and you know
  801. 34:42whenever you land in CAC they always say
  802. 34:44please remain seated till the plane
  803. 34:46comes to complete stop please wear your
  804. 34:48seat belts until it comes stop right you
  805. 34:51know you've heard that thing a thousand
  806. 34:52times right so they we land they start
  807. 34:56to say that and then they get after they
  808. 34:58said please you sir sit down sit down
  809. 35:02you sit down we're not moving this
  810. 35:04airplane till you sit down and put on
  811. 35:06your seat
  812. 35:08belt the flight attendant is screaming
  813. 35:10at this poor dude over the intercom in
  814. 35:13the
  815. 35:15airplane it's an international
  816. 35:18flight what's the possibility that
  817. 35:20person doesn't speak
  818. 35:24English pretty good
  819. 35:27pretty good wow I was flying on
  820. 35:33Southwest and we come in for a landing
  821. 35:36and they get on the the flight attendant
  822. 35:38gets on the
  823. 35:41microphone and they
  824. 35:43say we love you you love us we are
  825. 35:50faster than the bus please remain seated
  826. 35:54till the plane comes to complete stop
  827. 35:55because something can happen and you get
  828. 35:57hurt in we love you we don't want
  829. 35:58anything like that to happen thanks for
  830. 35:59flying Southwest compare that to sit
  831. 36:02down sit
  832. 36:04down
  833. 36:05wow okay so Southwest is more profitable
  834. 36:08it's safer the employees love working
  835. 36:11there ask next time you fly Southwest
  836. 36:12Airlines ask an employee now Southwest
  837. 36:16Airlines is
  838. 36:17safer more profitable they also pay
  839. 36:20their employees
  840. 36:22more yeah yeah yeah so
  841. 36:25airplanes have something called a
  842. 36:28turn a turn is when sitting on the
  843. 36:31ground right so a turn is how long it's
  844. 36:34sitting on the ground between when it's
  845. 36:36ready to take off and if you think about
  846. 36:38an airplane how much money does an
  847. 36:40airplane generate when sitting on the
  848. 36:43ground doing nothing nothing it's
  849. 36:45costing
  850. 36:46money so Southwest Airlines said to
  851. 36:50their employees
  852. 36:52look if you can help us get the turn
  853. 36:56rate down
  854. 36:59we will split the profit difference with
  855. 37:03you so a typical term is about an hour
  856. 37:08and 20
  857. 37:09minutes that's what it takes Delta to
  858. 37:11turn their
  859. 37:12airplanes Southwest Airlines can turn an
  860. 37:15airplane in less than 20
  861. 37:18minutes think about an hour a
  862. 37:20multi-million dollar asset not being
  863. 37:22used for an hour now let's be fair
  864. 37:26they're going on shorter flights so they
  865. 37:27don't have to refuel but at the same
  866. 37:29time it's very different South Delta
  867. 37:32says no no no no these employees do this
  868. 37:35these employees do this you ever fly a
  869. 37:37Delta that's got multiple hop you'll see
  870. 37:39all sorts of people come in and they
  871. 37:40clean up the airplane between between
  872. 37:42the stops Southwest Airlines has people
  873. 37:45do that too but they also you'll notice
  874. 37:47that the the crew members are actually
  875. 37:49helping clean you'll actually see the
  876. 37:50pilot coming at and helping clean or
  877. 37:53load luggage so you fly Delta you get on
  878. 37:56the plane they used to had the door open
  879. 37:58now they don't have the door open as
  880. 37:59much right so you see the co the the
  881. 38:02pilot sitting there drinking a cup of
  882. 38:03coffee waiting for everybody to get the
  883. 38:05plane ready to go I hope it's coffee
  884. 38:06right with those flight records you
  885. 38:08don't
  886. 38:09know but they're not doing it right and
  887. 38:13so it's your job is this your job is
  888. 38:15this Southwest Airline they're like a
  889. 38:17family they say hey let's all get
  890. 38:19together and do this and let's incre
  891. 38:22wouldn't you rather work for a company
  892. 38:23where everybody's working together
  893. 38:25versus get the pilot says hey get me
  894. 38:28another cup of
  895. 38:30coffee I would I
  896. 38:33would
  897. 38:36wow Kmart versus
  898. 38:39Walmart
  899. 38:41Kmart yeah think about Kmart and Walmart
  900. 38:45don't they both sell the same thing I
  901. 38:47mean you want a
  902. 38:49toaster you can go to Kmart or you can
  903. 38:51go to Walmart and it's the same toaster
  904. 38:54isn't it yeah they're the same one is
  905. 38:56very successful the largest company in
  906. 38:59the world
  907. 39:01one is bankrupt and going to go under
  908. 39:04and they're going to go away completely
  909. 39:06his owned by Sears that happens to be
  910. 39:07bankrupt and goingon to go away too wow
  911. 39:11so Kmart has had some troubles with
  912. 39:14employee
  913. 39:16theft you ever go into a Kmart look at
  914. 39:19the employees closely just kind of
  915. 39:21glance around and look at them a lot of
  916. 39:24times they look like they just got over
  917. 39:25the
  918. 39:26flu they don't look happy they're not
  919. 39:28like on oh this is fun they're like on
  920. 39:31no not so good right now Kmart had
  921. 39:34problems with inventory theft so they
  922. 39:36decided to do something called ciminal
  923. 39:40advertising so you go into the Kmart and
  924. 39:42you listen to the music you know the
  925. 39:45garbage music that you can't really
  926. 39:47stand but you don't even have notice it
  927. 39:49right so Kmart added a little voice in
  928. 39:53the background of that music that says
  929. 39:55Please Don't Steal
  930. 39:58please don't take things that don't
  931. 39:59belong to you pay for things you take
  932. 40:02from the store so it's in the background
  933. 40:04right so a reporter had heard about this
  934. 40:07recorded it then they took it to a mixer
  935. 40:11or something like that where they pulled
  936. 40:13those words out so you can hear it and
  937. 40:16then they played that for a manager at
  938. 40:19Kmart and they said hey you're trying to
  939. 40:23hypnotize your customers why are you
  940. 40:26hypnotizing your customers
  941. 40:28and Kmart's response was not what I
  942. 40:29expected they said
  943. 40:32customers our customers don't steal it's
  944. 40:38employees Walmart employees don't steal
  945. 40:41they just don't right pretty Walmart
  946. 40:44does not have problems like that like
  947. 40:45Kmart does now they're the same company
  948. 40:48they just don't so Walmart tells its
  949. 40:51employees look you guys are great
  950. 40:55employees we only hire the best you guys
  951. 40:58are the best now is there some truth to
  952. 40:59that yes because if you're the biggest
  953. 41:02company the most successful the highest
  954. 41:03net profits net revenue company in the
  955. 41:06world by definition that successful when
  956. 41:09you're number one right if you're the
  957. 41:10richest person it's Jeff Bezos
  958. 41:12successful well he just got to work okay
  959. 41:15is Jeff Bezos successful is Warren
  960. 41:18Buffett successful is Bill Gates
  961. 41:19successful yes if you're number one you
  962. 41:21are successful right they they're so
  963. 41:23they say
  964. 41:25look we hire good people people we train
  965. 41:28you guys you guys are great employees
  966. 41:30but we know sometimes inventory is going
  967. 41:34to get stolen it's a fact of life we
  968. 41:38appreciate that but if you can get our
  969. 41:43store below the national shrinkage rate
  970. 41:46shrinkage is was the term for when when
  971. 41:49merchandise goes away the national
  972. 41:50shrinkage rate for a store either
  973. 41:54Walmart or like us Kmart
  974. 41:58we will split the profit difference with
  975. 42:02you what do you mean so we're g keep
  976. 42:05track we're going to tell everybody how
  977. 42:07much we lose every day and if you get
  978. 42:09below the national average we'll take
  979. 42:11the profits savings on that and we'll
  980. 42:13split it with the
  981. 42:14employees so now you work at
  982. 42:17Kmart they treat you like a like a
  983. 42:20criminal then you go to work at Walmart
  984. 42:23all of a sudden Walmart says oh here's
  985. 42:24your $100 check this month because
  986. 42:27nobody stole or you guys got the
  987. 42:29inventory down here's your $200 check
  988. 42:31because everybody's getting this our
  989. 42:33inventory losses are going way down
  990. 42:35right so now we work at
  991. 42:38Walmart and you see I work at Walmart
  992. 42:41and you see I am stealing from the
  993. 42:45company what do you
  994. 42:48do am I your hero Future Shop you're
  995. 42:52going woohoo yes go Andy right I'm at
  996. 42:55Walmart you say stop it dude stop it
  997. 42:59right don't do this right you're taking
  998. 43:01money out of my paycheck when you do
  999. 43:04this see the different it's it's a
  1000. 43:06different mindset it's a different way
1001. 43:08of thinking so I take students abroad
1002. 43:10all the time taking all these different
1003. 43:11countries told you about that after the
1004. 43:13virus is over I'll send you an email
1005. 43:15hope you can go with me but normally I
  1006. 43:18take about 20
1007. 43:20students and I get these other teachers
1008. 43:22and they say 20 students how many
1009. 43:24teachers are going with you I said just
  1010. 43:26me I'm the only teacher and they're
1011. 43:28going you can take care of 20 students
1012. 43:31going through Germany the land of beer
1013. 43:34and nobody gets in trouble nope nobody
1014. 43:36gets in trouble never had any never had
1015. 43:38anybody go to jail never had anybody get
1016. 43:40any troubles at all ever and I've been
  1017. 43:43doing this
1018. 43:45for 17 years taking students abroad to
  1019. 43:49other countries it's a lot of fun now
1020. 43:51how how do you do that right because
1021. 43:54everybody says no you know what what
  1022. 43:56they're talking about there's always a
  1023. 43:58jerk there's always somebody who's doing
  1024. 44:01something right I said I'm not the
  1025. 44:04cop I'm not I don't want to be the cop
1026. 44:06the last thing I want to do is take 20
1027. 44:09people to Germany and try to catch them
1028. 44:13doing something wrong right I want to
1029. 44:16catch him doing something right right so
  1030. 44:18here's how I work it it's really easy I
  1031. 44:21say to to my
1032. 44:22students if everybody is good I said
1033. 44:26this the very beginning the quarter in
1034. 44:27my in my class where I take students
  1035. 44:29abroad I say if there aren't any
1036. 44:31troubles or any drama or if everything
1037. 44:34works out real well if everybody
1038. 44:37behaves I will be in a good mood and
  1039. 44:41when I'm in a good mood when I grade
  1040. 44:43your
  1041. 44:44papers I like to give
  1042. 44:46A's I do right it's fun giving an A
1043. 44:52but if everybody is bad if anybody is
  1044. 44:56bad
  1045. 44:58I get in a bad
1046. 45:00mood and how do you think I grade papers
  1047. 45:03when I'm in a bad
1048. 45:06mood well not so favorably yes that is
1049. 45:11so if you see somebody being a
1050. 45:14jerk and get doing something to get into
1051. 45:18trouble could their behavior cause your
1052. 45:22grade to go down the answer is not maybe
1053. 45:26the answer is yes it
1054. 45:28will so when you see somebody doing
  1055. 45:32getting ready to do
1056. 45:34something you tell them stop
1057. 45:37it now think about what this does it
1058. 45:40changes the whole momentum of the class
1059. 45:42so instead of saying he got they don't
  1060. 45:45do that then they're they're looking out
  1061. 45:46after each other aren't they they're
1062. 45:47like a teacher so when they see somebody
1063. 45:49do dude you're killing my grade so
1064. 45:52instead of me saying don't do that right
  1065. 45:56I'll give you a bad well I don't care
1066. 45:57I'm going to flunk out of school anyway
  1067. 46:00okay that doesn't I have no power do I
1068. 46:02right but what if all 20 other people
  1069. 46:04all 19 other people in they're going no
1070. 46:07dude no no no no it changes doesn't it
  1071. 46:11so it's a it's a family so if you see
1072. 46:14you have a relative and you see him
1073. 46:16doing something getting ready to drink
1074. 46:17and drive you see them they're drunk as
1075. 46:20they can barely stand up and they're
1076. 46:21going to drive home to
1077. 46:24Tacoma what do you say to them going no
1078. 46:27no no this is bad oh here let me start
1079. 46:30your car for you oh I lost the keys
  1080. 46:32sorry I don't know let's find them
1081. 46:34tomorrow maybe we can find them you can
1082. 46:36sleep on the on the couch we can find
  1083. 46:37this I'm sure they'll find it's dark now
1084. 46:39we can't you got the point right yeah
1085. 46:43yeah yeah pretty crazy stuff pretty
  1086. 46:46crazy
1087. 46:50stuff so next time we talk we're going
1088. 46:52to talk about shamboo the whale and
  1089. 46:56puppy
1090. 46:57poo you say wait how can Shamu the
1091. 47:02whale and puppy poo yeah poo poop crap
  1092. 47:06shyen
1093. 47:07M how can that be related to business it
1094. 47:11is and I'll get that with you when I see
  1095. 47:14you next time thanks
