- 0:10conversations in easy English to help you improve your English.
- 0:17Remember, you can read what we're saying on our website. BBC Learning English dot com.
- 0:30How are you today, Georgie?
- 0:33I'm pretty good, Neil, thank you. I'm happy that it’s Friday.
- 0:36Mm, me too!
- 0:38So today, we're talking about holidays and our dream destinations.
- 0:45Great, I love this topic.
- 0:47But can you explain what you mean by destination, Neil?
- 0:51A 'destination' is what we call a place we are going to.
- 0:57The place we would like to go to.
- 1:00OK. So, if we are on a train to visit London, London is our destination.
- 1:06But we often use it when we're talking about holidays or special journeys.
- 1:11That's right. So, a 'dream destination'
- 1:14is 'somewhere we would really like to go and travel on our holiday'.
- 1:19OK, so, where is your dream holiday destination, Neil?
- 1:24I like two different kinds of holidays.
- 1:27I like interesting cities, interesting old cities, like European cities,
- 1:33but I also like mountains and countryside
- 1:38and those kind of places, like in South America.
- 1:42Mm-hm. Yes, I also have two different types of holidays that I like.
- 1:48If I want to relax, I usually want to be in the sun by the beach,
- 1:53but I also love to see new and interesting places,
- 1:57places that you can't see in your own country.
- 2:01Neil, where's your favourite place you've ever been to?
- 2:05Oh, well, I really, really liked Japan, when I visited Japan.
- 2:11OK, so if I go to Japan, what should I do there?
- 2:15You should eat as much food as you can, cos the food is fantastic.
- 2:20And you can eat in a little noodle shop
- 2:25or you can eat in a big, posh restaurant and it's all amazing.
- 2:29Mm, that sounds so good, and I love food!
- 2:32Ok so, you said I should try some Japanese restaurants.
- 2:36What is this word 'should'? What does it mean?
- 2:38It means I think it's a good idea for you to do that. That's my advice to you.
- 2:45OK, so it's kind of like a recommendation in this case?
- 2:49Yeah. So when you go to Japan, you should eat sushi.
- 2:53When you go to Japan, you should visit Kyoto to see Zen gardens.
- 3:00So how about you, Georgie?
- 3:02What's... What's the best place you've ever been on holiday?
- 3:06I really love Edinburgh in Scotland. I love it because it's very green.
- 3:12The city is very close to nature and it’s very beautiful.
- 3:16The buildings are really beautiful.
- 3:18OK, so Edinburgh, Georgie. What could I do in Edinburgh?
- 3:23Well, in August, for example, you could go to the Fringe Festival,
- 3:28which is a comedy and arts festival.
- 3:30So you could see some shows.
- 3:33Or you could go for a walk in the national parks outside of the city.
- 3:38Or you could go to see some of the museums they have.
- 3:43There’s lots of things you could do.
- 3:44Yeah, and when we use 'could', we're talking about 'things that are possible'.
- 3:50Yes, and that's different from 'should',
- 3:52because when I say you should do something,
- 3:54it means that it’s a good idea or I'm giving you advice.
- 3:58But 'could', I'm just giving you some options,
- 4:01things that are possible for you to do.
- 4:03Now, we don't always go to another country on holiday
- 4:08or even a different city, do we?
- 4:10No, now it's actually quite popular to go on holiday inside your own country
- 4:15and we have a word for this, don't we, Neil?
- 4:17Yes, we do. It combines two words, the word 'stay' and the word 'vacation'.
- 4:23Put them together and you have 'staycation'.
- 4:26And a 'staycation'
- 4:27is 'a holiday at, actually in, your house, or near your house'.
- 4:31Have you ever done a staycation, Neil?
- 4:35Yes, plenty of times!
- 4:38Often, on a staycation you might do day trips,
- 4:41so go and visit places in the area, but come home in the evening.
- 4:51Now the problem with holidays is they are expensive.
- 4:54We probably need to save up money if we want to travel to all these places,
- 4:58apart from the staycation.
- 5:00Yes, we should save up some money, exactly.
- 5:03Let's recap the language we learned during the conversation.
- 5:08We learned 'destination', which we use to talk about 'a place we are going to,
- 5:14'or we would like to go to'.
- 5:16'Could', which we use to talk about 'something that is possible'.
- 5:20'Should', which we use to talk about 'something that it's a good idea to do'.
- 5:25This is advice.
- 5:27And 'staycation' which is 'a fun word to talk about a holiday at or near home'.
- 5:36That's it for this episode of Real Easy English. Visit our website for
