- 0:54So, Paul, what is our topic today? Today
- 0:59we talk about our day, our daily
- 1:02routine, what we do every day.
- 1:05>> Ah, that's a great topic. We use a lot
- 1:08of simple important English for that. We
- 1:12use the simple present.
- 1:15>> Yes, the simple present is for routines,
- 1:18habits, things we do every day or
- 1:22sometimes or never.
- 1:24>> It sounds easy and useful. So to start,
- 1:29Paul, are you a morning person?
- 1:32>> A morning person? H
- 1:35no, Emily, I am not a morning person. I
- 1:39like my bed.
- 1:42>> Oh, I see. So you wake up late?
- 1:45>> Yes, I do. On weekends, I wake up very
- 1:49late. On weekdays, for work, I wake up
- 1:52at 8:00.
- 1:54>> 8:00 is not so late. I am a morning
- 1:58person. I love the morning.
- 2:00>> Wow. Really? So, you wake up early?
- 2:03>> I do. I wake up at 6:00 every day. Yes,
- 2:08even on weekends.
- 2:10>> 6:00. Wow. Emily, what do you do so
- 2:14early?
- 2:15>> Well, first I open the window. I love
- 2:19the morning air. Then I drink a big
- 2:22glass of water.
- 2:24>> Water? That is very healthy. I need my
- 2:29coffee. The first thing I do is make
- 2:31coffee.
- 2:32>> Ah, a coffee person. I like coffee, too.
- 2:36But in the morning, I prefer tea.
- 2:40>> Tea is good. It's calm. I need energy.
- 2:45So, I drink coffee. I always have a big
- 2:48cup.
- 2:49>> I understand. After my water, I do some
- 2:53exercise. Just a little.
- 2:56>> Exercise in the morning. You have so
- 2:58much energy.
- 3:01>> It helps me wake up. After that, I take
- 3:04a shower and then I have breakfast.
- 3:08>> Okay. Breakfast. My favorite part of the
- 3:11morning. What do you eat for breakfast,
- 3:14Emily?
- 3:15>> I usually eat yogurt and fruit.
- 3:18Sometimes I have toast with jam. What
- 3:22about you, Paul?
- 3:23I love a big breakfast. I usually have
- 3:28eggs and toast and my coffee, of course.
- 3:31>> Eggs and toast. Yummy. That's a classic
- 3:35breakfast.
- 3:36>> Yes, it is. I feel ready for the day
- 3:39after my eggs and coffee. So, what
- 3:42happens next in your day? You go to
- 3:45work.
- 3:45>> Yes, I work from Monday to Friday. I
- 3:49work at a small library. I love books.
- 3:54>> A library. That sounds so nice and
- 3:57quiet. I work in an office. It is not
- 4:01quiet.
- 4:02>> I can imagine. I like the library
- 4:05because I see many people and many, many
- 4:09books. I start work at 9:00.
- 4:13>> I also start at 9:00. I drive my car to
- 4:17work. The traffic is sometimes bad. Oh,
- 4:20I don't like traffic. I walk to the
- 4:23library. It is very close to my house.
- 4:27>> You walk? That is wonderful. A nice
- 4:30morning walk.
- 4:32>> Yes. It's only 10 minutes. I listen to
- 4:35music or a podcast. Sometimes I listen
- 4:39to Mr. English Channel.
- 4:42>> Good choice. So, we both work. We start
- 4:46at 9. What about lunch? I get hungry
- 4:50around 1:00.
- 4:52>> Me, too. I usually bring my lunch from
- 4:55home. I eat a salad or a sandwich.
- 4:59>> That's smart. I sometimes go to a small
- 5:02cafe near my office. They have good
- 5:05sandwiches.
- 5:06>> It's nice to go out sometimes. Do you
- 5:09eat with people from your work?
- 5:12>> Yes, I do. I usually eat with my friend
- 5:15David. We talk about sports and movies.
- 5:19>> That's nice. A good break from work. I
- 5:22eat in a little park near the library
- 5:25when the weather is nice.
- 5:26>> A park. How lovely. With the sun and the
- 5:31trees.
- 5:32>> Exactly. It's very relaxing. So, we
- 5:37work, we have lunch, then what? The
- 5:40afternoon.
- 5:41>> The afternoon
- 5:44for me. The afternoon at work is busy.
- 5:47Many emails, many phone calls.
- 5:50>> For me, too. Many people come to the
- 5:53library in the afternoon. Families with
- 5:57children.
- 5:58>> Oh, that sounds fun. Do you read stories
- 6:02to them?
- 6:03>> Sometimes. Yes. I love reading stories
- 6:06to the kids. They have big happy eyes.
- 6:10>> That is so sweet. My afternoon is just
- 6:14more coffee.
- 6:18>> More coffee for Paul. And when do you
- 6:20finish work?
- 6:21>> I finish work at 5:00. And you?
- 6:25>> I also finish at 5:00. The library
- 6:29closes and I go home.
- 6:31>> So when you get home, what is the first
- 6:35thing you do?
- 6:37>> H.
- 6:39Good question.
- 6:40I have a dog. His name is Max. So, the
- 6:44first thing I do is say hello to Max. He
- 6:48is always so happy to see me.
- 6:51>> A Max, that's a great way to come home.
- 6:55I don't have a pet.
- 6:57>> You should get a cat. You are not a
- 7:00morning person and cats sleep a lot. A
- 7:04perfect match.
- 7:07>> A cat? Hm. Maybe my friend has a cat.
- 7:12His name is Leo. Leo is very lazy. He
- 7:17sleeps all day.
- 7:19>> See, he wakes up, he eats, he sleeps, he
- 7:24eats again, he sleeps again. A simple
- 7:28life.
- 7:28>> That is a very simple life. Leo is
- 7:32lucky. So, after you say hello to Max,
- 7:37what do you do?
- 7:38>> I take Max for a walk in the park, the
- 7:42same park where I have lunch. He loves
- 7:44it. He runs and plays.
- 7:47>> That's nice. Fresh air after a day of
- 7:50work. After I get home, I usually listen
- 7:54to music.
- 7:55>> Oh, what kind of music do you listen to?
- 7:58>> I like rock music and jazz. It helps me
- 8:02relax. Sometimes I play my guitar.
- 8:06>> You play the guitar? Wow, Paul, that's
- 8:09so cool.
- 8:12>> I try. I'm not a rock star, but I enjoy
- 8:16it. I play for about an hour.
- 8:18>> That's a fantastic hobby. My hobby is
- 8:22reading. I have many books at home.
- 8:25>> Of course, you work in a library. It
- 8:30makes sense.
- 8:31>> Yes, I love to read a good book in the
- 8:35evening. It's quiet and I can travel to
- 8:39other worlds.
- 8:40>> I understand that. For me, music is like
- 8:45that. So, what about dinner? When do you
- 8:49have dinner?
- 8:51>> I usually cook dinner around 7:00. I
- 8:55like to cook. It's creative. I am not a
- 8:59good cook, Emily. I cook simple things.
- 9:03Pasta is my specialty.
- 9:07>> Pasta is great. You can put anything
- 9:10with pasta.
- 9:11>> That is true. I often make pasta with
- 9:16tomato sauce. Very simple, very good.
- 9:21>> It sounds delicious. I like to cook
- 9:24vegetables and chicken or sometimes
- 9:27fish. And Max eats his dinner, too. Of
- 9:30course.
- 9:31>> Of course. Max needs his dinner. So,
- 9:36after dinner, what do you do in the
- 9:38evening?
- 9:40>> I watch a movie sometimes or a show on
- 9:44TV or I read my book. I like quiet
- 9:48evenings.
- 9:49>> Me, too. I watch TV or a movie or I call
- 9:54my family or my friends.
- 9:56>> Oh, that's very nice. You talk to your
- 10:00family every day.
- 10:02>> Not every day. I usually call my parents
- 10:05on Wednesday and Sunday. I talk to my
- 10:09sister a few times a week.
- 10:12>> It's important to talk to family. I
- 10:15usually call my parents on the weekend.
- 10:18Yes, it is. So, after all that, it's
- 10:22time for bed.
- 10:24>> Yes, the end of the day. Because I wake
- 10:27up early, I go to bed early.
- 10:31>> That makes sense. What time do you go to
- 10:34bed?
- 10:35>> I usually go to bed around 10:00. I read
- 10:39in bed for a few minutes and then sleep.
- 10:42>> 10:00? That is early for me. I usually
- 10:48go to bed around 11:30 or midnight.
- 10:52>> See, I am a morning person and you are a
- 10:56night person.
- 10:59>> A night owl. Yes, that's me. I like the
- 11:03quiet of the night.
- 11:05>> So, this is our day. It's interesting
- 11:08how we use the simple present for
- 11:11everything. I wake up. You play the
- 11:15guitar. He sleeps all day.
- 11:18>> Yes. The verb is simple for I, you, we,
- 11:23they, the verb is the same. I walk. You
- 11:27walk. We walk. They walk.
- 11:31>> But for he, she, and it, we add an s. My
- 11:37dog Max plays with his ball. Your
- 11:41friend's cat, Leo, eats his food. He
- 11:45eats. She reads. It sleeps. Yes, that
- 11:50little s is very important.
- 11:52>> It is. And for questions, we use do or
- 11:57does. Like I asked you, do you like
- 12:01coffee?
- 12:02>> Yes. And you answered yes, I do. Or you
- 12:07can say no, I don't. And if I ask about
- 12:11your friend Leo, I say, "Does he sleep a
- 12:15lot?"
- 12:16>> And the answer is, "Yes, he does." He
- 12:20definitely does.
- 12:21>> It's not so difficult when you see it in
- 12:24a real conversation.
- 12:26It's all about routine and habits.
- 12:29>> Exactly. And everyone has a routine. Our
- 12:33listeners have routines. I wonder what
- 12:36they do every day. Oh, that's a great
- 12:38question. Do they wake up early like me
- 12:42>> or do they wake up late like me?
- 12:46>> Do they drink tea or coffee?
- 12:48>> Do they walk to work or drive a car?
- 12:52>> What do they do in the evening? Do they
- 12:55read or play the guitar?
- 12:58>> So many interesting routines.
- 13:00I think our days are very different, but
- 13:03also a little similar. We work, we eat,
- 13:08we relax.
- 13:09>> That's true. The small things are
- 13:12different and that makes life
- 13:14interesting. Your guitar, my dog, Max,
- 13:18>> the library, my busy office, it's all
- 13:21part of our daily story.
- 13:23>> I like that. Our daily story. And the
- 13:27simple present helps us tell that story.
- 13:30>> It does. It's a key to speaking English.
- 13:33A very important first step. Well, Paul,
- 13:36I think we had a great chat about our
- 13:39day. It was fun to learn about your
- 13:42routine.
- 13:43>> It was fun to learn about yours, too,
- 13:45Emily. Now I know why you are always so
- 13:48happy in the morning.
- 13:50>> It's the 6:00 air and the tea
- 13:54>> and the exercise. I will stick to my
- 13:57coffee. Thank you very much.
- 14:00>> Okay. Okay. Well, I think that's all the
- 14:04time we have for today.
- 14:06>> Yes, it is. This was a lot of fun. We
- 14:10hope you all had fun, too.
- 14:13>> We hope you learned a little more about
- 14:15the simple present and how to talk about
- 14:19your day.
