  1. 0:07From UFOs, wormholes, and cryptids to
  2. 0:10cattle mutilations and polterists, a
  3. 0:13remote property in northern Utah has
  4. 0:15been described as a Disneyland of
  5. 0:17paranormal and supernatural phenomena. A
  6. 0:20case that has turned the heads of even
  7. 0:22some of the most ardent of skeptics.
  8. 0:25We recount the tales from Skinwalker
  9. 0:28Ranch.
  10. 0:34[Music]
  11. 1:18It has been said that Utah, particularly
  12. 1:21northern Utah in the Uint basin, is one
  13. 1:24of the most active Paranormal and
  14. 1:26supernatural hotspots on the planet.
  15. 1:28Everything from unidentified lights in
  16. 1:30the sky to weird humanoid figures and
  17. 1:33even Bigfoot have been spotted in the
  18. 1:35region. It has a long history of high
  19. 1:38stranges, accounts which date back to
  20. 1:41the earliest of human settlements.
  21. 1:43Three out of every four people in this
  22. 1:45part of the state have experienced
  23. 1:47something out of the ordinary. And for
  24. 1:49many others just passing through, there
  25. 1:51is a palpable feeling that those dusty
  26. 1:54roads and bleak landscapes hide
  27. 1:56something of a dark secret.
  28. 1:59Much of the strange activity is
  29. 2:00concentrated in and around the basin.
  30. 2:03But some believe that within that radius
  31. 2:05there is an epicenter from which all
  32. 2:07these bizarre phenomena seem to
  33. 2:09manifest. A beautiful 480 acre ranch
  34. 2:13situated about 100 mi due east of Salt
  35. 2:15Lake City.
  36. 2:17As with any other acreage, it
  37. 2:19traditionally adopts the name of the
  38. 2:21current owner, but over time it has come
  39. 2:24to be known by another.
  40. 2:27The youths believed this ranch to be the
  41. 2:29focal point of a curse placed on them by
  42. 2:31the Navajo. Tribe members were and still
  43. 2:34are forbidden from setting foot on this
  44. 2:36land as they believe it to be in the
  45. 2:39path of the skinwalker.
  46. 2:42For this reason, it became known to the
  47. 2:44locals as Skinwalker Ranch.
  48. 2:48Throughout the latter half of the 20th
  49. 2:50century, Skinwalker Ranch was owned by a
  50. 2:53family which has long remained anonymous
  51. 2:55in this mysterious saga. For reasons
  52. 2:58unknown, they suddenly and inexplicably
  53. 3:01vacated the property in 1987,
  54. 3:04leaving it empty and unattended for more
  55. 3:06than 7 years.
  56. 3:08That was until 1994 when it was
  57. 3:11purchased by Terry and Gwen Sherman.
  58. 3:14Along with their two children, the
  59. 3:16couple believed that they had found
  60. 3:17their dream home. The remote property
  61. 3:20was bordered to the north by a high
  62. 3:22ridge which overlooked its sprawling
  63. 3:24green pastures, wild thickets of
  64. 3:26woodland, and its flowing creek to the
  65. 3:28south. The entire estate exuded an
  66. 3:31almost tranquil beauty that was not lost
  67. 3:33on the Sherman family. Terry was a
  68. 3:36high-end cattle breeder, and he hoped
  69. 3:38that the ranch would provide the space,
  70. 3:40privacy, and security he needed to take
  71. 3:43what was not only his hobby, but his
  72. 3:45livelihood to the next level.
  73. 3:48He had bought the ranch for an extremely
  74. 3:50favorable price, far less than what it
  75. 3:52was worth. And when he signed the
  76. 3:55paperwork, he accepted the deeds with an
  77. 3:57excited, disbelieving look in his eyes.
  78. 4:00What he now held in the palm of his hand
  79. 4:02was his ambition, his prospects, his
  80. 4:06dream. He could not have known that the
  81. 4:08land he had just purchased would almost
  82. 4:10destroy him, not just financially, but
  83. 4:14also psychologically.
  84. 4:17When they had first viewed the property,
  85. 4:19Terry and Gwen had found the main
  86. 4:21homestead in a state of disrepair, which
  87. 4:23of course they had anticipated given the
  88. 4:26length of time it had stood empty. What
  89. 4:28they did not expect to find, however,
  90. 4:30was the sheer amount of dead bolts
  91. 4:32securing the home. Not just on the front
  92. 4:34and back doors, but on interior doors
  93. 4:37and all of the windows, too. At the
  94. 4:39front and rear entrances, they also
  95. 4:41found heavyduty chains attached to huge
  96. 4:44metal rungs, which were embedded into
  97. 4:46the walls. It didn't take a genius to
  98. 4:49work out that these had been used to
  99. 4:50chain large, powerful guard dogs in
  100. 4:52place.
  101. 4:54Although slightly unsettled by these
  102. 4:55peculiarities,
  103. 4:57Terry and Gwen dismissed them, believing
  104. 4:59that the elderly couple who owned the
  105. 5:01ranch before them had been paranoid and
  106. 5:03overprotective.
  107. 5:04They had seemed rather eccentric after
  108. 5:06all. In the real estate contract, they
  109. 5:09had inserted a number of unusual
  110. 5:11clauses. For instance, the Shermans were
  111. 5:14not permitted to dig on the land without
  112. 5:16prior approval from the previous owners.
  113. 5:19These irregularities were overlooked by
  114. 5:21the family, but somewhere in the back of
  115. 5:23Terry's mind. He could not help
  116. 5:25wondering what had spooked them to the
  117. 5:27point of installing this level of
  118. 5:29security. In time, of course, he would
  119. 5:32come to understand that this idyllic,
  120. 5:34stunning acreage was haunting in more
  121. 5:36ways than just its serene beauty. And in
  122. 5:39fact, the weirdness began almost
  123. 5:42straight away.
  124. 5:45On the first day of moving in, the
  125. 5:47Sherman family were unloading a truck in
  126. 5:49front of their new home when they
  127. 5:51spotted something on the far side of the
  128. 5:52pasture to the south. As it closed the
  129. 5:55distance, they could see that it was a
  130. 5:57wolf, which was loping gracefully
  131. 5:59towards them in a series of s turns.
  132. 6:02This immediately set Terry on guard. But
  133. 6:05it wasn't just the presence of the wolf
  134. 6:06that concerned him. Scaling it against
  135. 6:09distant fence posts and bushes, he could
  136. 6:12see that this animal was at least three
  137. 6:14times the size of an average wolf. But
  138. 6:16its behavior was oddly disarming. It
  139. 6:19seemed nonchulant, friendly even rather
  140. 6:21than aggressive, slowing down and then
  141. 6:24stopping about 50 yards away. It sniffed
  142. 6:27the air and gazed at the family with
  143. 6:29intelligent, piercing blue eyes before
  144. 6:31continuing on, casually padding towards
  145. 6:33them without a care in the world. It
  146. 6:36seemed entirely tame.
  147. 6:38It wagged its tail as it approached, and
  148. 6:41Terry's father, who had been helping
  149. 6:43unload the truck, bravely reached out to
  150. 6:45stroke the huge beast. Sherman Senior
  151. 6:48stood over 6 ft tall, and even though he
  152. 6:51was a big man, its head easily came up
  153. 6:54to the top of his shoulder.
  154. 6:56It quickly became clear that despite the
  155. 6:58wolf's intimidating size and appearance,
  156. 7:01it meant no harm. The rest of the family
  157. 7:04relaxed and walked over to greet their
  158. 7:06strange visitor.
  159. 7:07Maybe it's somebody's pet," Terry
  160. 7:09ventured, glancing nervously at the
  161. 7:11corral about 70 ft to his left, and
  162. 7:14wondering if it had been wise to move
  163. 7:15some of his herd onto the ranch so soon.
  164. 7:18Inside of the pen stood four of his
  165. 7:20breeding cows and as many calves. They
  166. 7:23were all clearly troubled by the wolf's
  167. 7:25presence, except for one curious
  168. 7:28youngster, which was sticking its head
  169. 7:30out between the metal bars, watching the
  170. 7:32scene unfold.
  171. 7:34Almost as soon as Terry had realized the
  172. 7:36danger, the wolf had bounded across the
  173. 7:38short distance and now had its huge jaws
  174. 7:41clamped around the cal's head. The young
  175. 7:43cow bleeded and thrashed wildly as the
  176. 7:45wolf tried to drag it out of the pen.
  177. 7:48Terry grabbed an axe handle from the
  178. 7:49back of his truck and rushed over,
  179. 7:51beating the huge animals flanks and
  180. 7:53kicking at its hind legs, but the wolf
  181. 7:55paid no attention and refused to let go.
  182. 7:59"Get my magnum!" he shouted. His son ran
  183. 8:02across to the truck, grabbed a 357 from
  184. 8:05the cabin, and handed it to his father.
  185. 8:08Terry quickly fired a shot at the wolf's
  186. 8:10abdomen, which rang out across the empty
  187. 8:12pasture, but it had no effect. The huge
  188. 8:17animal did not react in any way. It did
  189. 8:19not stagger or yelp. It did not even
  190. 8:22flinch. It simply continued to ravage
  191. 8:25the poor calf. In his desperation, Terry
  192. 8:29fired again. Still, the gun had no
  193. 8:31effect. After a third shot, however, the
  194. 8:35wolf slowly released its grip and backed
  195. 8:37off about 10 ft.
  196. 8:39The rancher could not believe his eyes.
  197. 8:42Very few animals could have survived
  198. 8:43three shots from a .357 Magnum at point
  199. 8:46blank range, but this wolf was somehow
  200. 8:49not even wounded. There was no blood
  201. 8:51anywhere on its coat.
  202. 8:54Finally, he took a fourth shot right at
  203. 8:56the animal's heart, and it retreated
  204. 8:58another 30 ft.
  205. 9:00There was something incredibly unnerving
  206. 9:02about the way it just stood there with
  207. 9:03an unconcerned look, contemplating
  208. 9:06whether to attack the car for a second
  209. 9:08time. Terry sensed this and shouted at
  210. 9:11his son to get his 306 rifle from the
  211. 9:14house, which he did within a matter of
  212. 9:16seconds. The wolf remained perfectly
  213. 9:18still as he took aim with the heavier
  214. 9:20firearm, and he almost felt sorry for
  215. 9:22the poor beast. A deafening shot echoed
  216. 9:25across the wilderness as he pulled the
  217. 9:27trigger. And in that moment, he knew
  218. 9:29he'd hit his target. But instead of
  219. 9:32collapsing to the ground in a heap, as
  220. 9:34it should have done, the wolf simply
  221. 9:35withdrew another 2 yard and stood
  222. 9:38looking at an increasingly unsettled
  223. 9:40Terry. He quickly took another shot, and
  224. 9:43this time he saw a chunk of flesh
  225. 9:45detached from the animal, but even this
  226. 9:47did not put it down.
  227. 9:49The wolf took a last unhurried look at
  228. 9:51the calf, then turned and trotted back
  229. 9:54in the direction it came from. Terry was
  230. 9:57dumbfounded. He knew he could not allow
  231. 10:00a large predator to remain on his land
  232. 10:01if he intended to breed cattle, so he
  233. 10:04called to his teenage son, and the two
  234. 10:06of them proceeded to go after it. They
  235. 10:09must have followed the wolf for about
  236. 10:10half an hour, catching glimpses of it as
  237. 10:13it ran to the south between patches of
  238. 10:14cottonwoods and other trees. The tracks
  239. 10:17led them through a cops of Russian
  240. 10:19olives, the other side of which was the
  241. 10:21creek. And emerging from the trees, they
  242. 10:24found themselves on a wide open mudbank.
  243. 10:27They could clearly see the wolf's paw
  244. 10:28prints and immediately began to follow
  245. 10:30them, but the tracks abruptly stopped
  246. 10:33about 40 yard from the water's edge.
  247. 10:36Terry and his son could not believe
  248. 10:37their eyes. They were standing in a wide
  249. 10:40open expanse of soden mud. Yet, the paw
  250. 10:42prince ended right in the middle of the
  251. 10:44bank. The wolf would have had to have
  252. 10:46left an impossible 40 or 50 yards in
  253. 10:49either direction to avoid leaving any
  254. 10:51more tracks. It had seemingly vanished
  255. 10:54into thin air.
  256. 10:57Returning to the homestead, Terry
  257. 10:59happened to pick up the piece of flesh
  258. 11:01that had detached from the animal. He
  259. 11:03noted that rather than being fresh and
  260. 11:05covered in blood, it looked and smelled
  261. 11:07rotten, as though it had been left out
  262. 11:10in the sun for a few days.
  263. 11:12In quiet contemplation, he turned his
  264. 11:15head south and looked out over the
  265. 11:17pasture towards the horizon, wondering
  266. 11:20what on earth had just happened.
  267. 11:23That was the first day. The next few
  268. 11:26weeks were relatively normal, except for
  269. 11:28a few strange occurrences which happened
  270. 11:30around the homestead, all targeted
  271. 11:33towards Gwen. She didn't report any of
  272. 11:35these things to her husband at first, as
  273. 11:38she genuinely thought she was losing her
  274. 11:40mind. For instance, she would come home
  275. 11:43from shopping, unpack the groceries, and
  276. 11:45put them away, and then leave the room
  277. 11:47to attend to something else. Moments
  278. 11:50later, she would return to the kitchen
  279. 11:52and find the groceries all back in the
  280. 11:54bags, as if she had never unpacked them.
  281. 11:57In other occurrences, she would go to
  282. 12:00have her customary morning shower.
  283. 12:02Locking the door behind her, she would
  284. 12:04place her towel and hairbrush on the
  285. 12:06side. When she finished, she would step
  286. 12:09out of the shower only to find her towel
  287. 12:11and hairbrush missing. They would
  288. 12:13disappear. A few hours later, she would
  289. 12:16find them in some random location
  290. 12:18elsewhere in the house. Things continued
  291. 12:21like this for some time, and Gwen was
  292. 12:23getting increasingly worried about her
  293. 12:25memory. That was until Terry came in one
  294. 12:28evening demanding to know who had taken
  295. 12:30his post digger. He had been using it to
  296. 12:32repair a fence in the pasture and had
  297. 12:35turned away for a few moments. When he
  298. 12:37turned back, it had gone. Gwen explained
  299. 12:41that she and the children had been in
  300. 12:42the house all evening and proceeded to
  301. 12:44help him search for it. However, it was
  302. 12:47nowhere to be seen. A few weeks later,
  303. 12:50it was found hanging in a tree on the
  304. 12:52other side of the ranch, 70 ft off the
  305. 12:55ground, which was odd considering that
  306. 12:57this piece of equipment weighed over 70
  307. 12:59lb.
  308. 13:01By this time, the Shermans were
  309. 13:03beginning to suspect that something was
  310. 13:05not quite right about the property they
  311. 13:07had bought. About a week before they
  312. 13:10rediscovered the post digger, a nephew
  313. 13:12came to stay with them, and Terry
  314. 13:14decided to take the youngster on a tour
  315. 13:15of the ranch. His son also accompanied
  316. 13:18them, and it was well after sunset when
  317. 13:20they decided to return to the homestead.
  318. 13:23A few hundred yards ahead, Terry noticed
  319. 13:26a set of headlights moving along a
  320. 13:27distant fence line well within the
  321. 13:29boundaries of his property.
  322. 13:32He had seen these lights before and had
  323. 13:34assumed that someone had taken a wrong
  324. 13:35turn off the road to the east. But now
  325. 13:38seeing them again, he suspected that
  326. 13:41these people, whoever they were, were
  327. 13:43hunting on his land without permission.
  328. 13:46He decided that he would confront them
  329. 13:48and immediately began marching in their
  330. 13:50direction. But as he picked up the pace,
  331. 13:53the lights began to move away from him.
  332. 13:56His brisk walk turned into a jog. And as
  333. 13:59the boys followed suit, he began to
  334. 14:01wonder why there was no engine sound.
  335. 14:04They had gotten to within a 100 yards
  336. 14:06when the lights suddenly lifted off the
  337. 14:08ground and floated up over some distant
  338. 14:10treetops.
  339. 14:12Terry and the boys stopped dead in their
  340. 14:14tracks, shocked by what they were
  341. 14:16seeing. The lights silently continued on
  342. 14:19their course before disappearing out of
  343. 14:21sight.
  344. 14:23During the autumn, these lights became a
  345. 14:25frequent occurrence, especially as Terry
  346. 14:28began transporting his prize Simmonl and
  347. 14:30Angus cattle onto the ranch. The
  348. 14:32activity seemed to escalate with the
  349. 14:34arrival of his high-end livestock, and
  350. 14:36this is when things started to turn
  351. 14:38serious.
  352. 14:40As the winter months rolled in, severe
  353. 14:42snowstorms battered the region, and
  354. 14:44Terry found himself out at all hours,
  355. 14:47rounding up cattle that had wandered too
  356. 14:48far astray.
  357. 14:50One late evening, he was out on
  358. 14:52horseback searching for one of his prize
  359. 14:54Angus cows that had been missing for
  360. 14:56almost 24 hours. He had covered the
  361. 14:59whole ranch except for a dense area of
  362. 15:01woodland to the southwest, which he was
  363. 15:04now heading towards. As he approached
  364. 15:06the large outcropping of trees, he was
  365. 15:09relieved to see the unmistakable
  366. 15:10impressions of hoof prints in the deep
  367. 15:12snow, and he now knew that it was only a
  368. 15:14matter of time before he located the
  369. 15:16animal. He paused briefly as he
  370. 15:18considered the tracks. From the spacing,
  371. 15:21he determined that she had been running
  372. 15:23at full tilt as she had entered the
  373. 15:24treeine. This was odd behavior for a
  374. 15:27cow, especially during a snowstorm,
  375. 15:30unless she had been running from
  376. 15:31something. But what? Although it was
  377. 15:35unlikely for a predator to be hunting
  378. 15:36during this weather, it wasn't
  379. 15:38impossible, but he could see only one
  380. 15:40set of tracks. He followed the hoof
  381. 15:43prints for 20 yards into the trees and
  382. 15:45soon reached a wide clearing. The tracks
  383. 15:48continued out into the middle of the
  384. 15:50open space and then stopped dead. The
  385. 15:54cow was nowhere to be seen.
  386. 15:56A cold chill ran down his spine as he
  387. 15:58recalled how the wolf's tracks had
  388. 16:00stopped in a similar fashion, as if the
  389. 16:02animal had disappeared or had been
  390. 16:04sucked up into the air. He searched for
  391. 16:07a while longer, but began to lose hope.
  392. 16:10In the end, he turned back towards the
  393. 16:12homestead with a heavy heart. The only
  394. 16:15thing Terry loved more than his cattle
  395. 16:17was his family. And to lose a single cow
  396. 16:20or bull was not only financially
  397. 16:22devastating, it was also heartbreaking.
  398. 16:25He had a profound sense of pride in the
  399. 16:27breeding and rearing of each of his
  400. 16:28animals.
  401. 16:30Over the course of the winter, four more
  402. 16:33of his prized cows and bulls would
  403. 16:34disappear in a similar fashion. Terry
  404. 16:37began to spend many nights outdoors,
  405. 16:39sticking to the shadows and creeping
  406. 16:41around his property like a spectre,
  407. 16:43trying to get the drop on who was taking
  408. 16:45his cattle. Unfortunately for him,
  409. 16:48whoever or whatever it was always seemed
  410. 16:51to be two steps ahead. The lights seen
  411. 16:54on his land were now commonplace, but he
  412. 16:57could only ever view them from a
  413. 16:58distance, never up close. No matter how
  414. 17:01silently he tried to creep towards them,
  415. 17:04they would simply move away as if they
  416. 17:06knew he was there.
  417. 17:08But then, in the early hours of one
  418. 17:10morning, after yet another fruitless
  419. 17:12night, he was making his way back
  420. 17:14towards the homestead when a movement in
  421. 17:17the periphery of his vision suddenly
  422. 17:18caught his attention. To his utter
  423. 17:21shock, he saw a black mass hovering over
  424. 17:24the ground about 100 yards to his left,
  425. 17:26silhouetted against the pale white snow.
  426. 17:29Immediately, he hunkered down and
  427. 17:31quietly observed the strange object as
  428. 17:33it moved across the land. To his eyes,
  429. 17:36it looked like a slightly smaller,
  430. 17:38snub-nosed version of the F-17
  431. 17:40Nighthawk.
  432. 17:42However, he knew that it couldn't have
  433. 17:44been an F-17
  434. 17:46because this thing was completely quiet,
  435. 17:48floating about 20 ft off the ground as
  436. 17:50if defying gravity.
  437. 17:53Colored light shone from its hull,
  438. 17:55flitting over the snow as if it was
  439. 17:57searching for something. Terry was able
  440. 17:59to observe it for around 15 minutes as
  441. 18:02it made its way over to the west before
  442. 18:04turning back and heading east again.
  443. 18:07Sitting still in the cold, Terry's arms
  444. 18:10were beginning to go numb. And as he
  445. 18:12stretched his limbs, his joints cracked.
  446. 18:15In the deathly silence, the sound seemed
  447. 18:18impossibly loud, but in reality, it was
  448. 18:21so insignificant that it wouldn't have
  449. 18:23been heard by anyone standing beyond a
  450. 18:25distance of 6 ft. Nevertheless, the
  451. 18:29lights on the strange craft suddenly
  452. 18:31went out. It then stopped and turned in
  453. 18:33his direction. For a few tense moments,
  454. 18:37Terry's heart thumped in his chest as
  455. 18:39the object seemed to glare at him. But
  456. 18:42to his relief, it turned and silently
  457. 18:45floated off to the north out of sight.
  458. 18:48In the new year, as the spring rains
  459. 18:51began to lash the ranch, the family
  460. 18:53would lose even more cattle. But now
  461. 18:55they began to reappear, sometimes dead
  462. 18:58from no apparent cause, other times
  463. 19:00extensively mutilated.
  464. 19:02The nature of these mutilations was
  465. 19:04bizarre. Huge chunks of flesh and skin
  466. 19:07were carved out of the animals, yet
  467. 19:09there was no blood. The wounds always
  468. 19:12seemed to be cut with precision
  469. 19:13instruments, displaying an almost
  470. 19:15surgical quality rather than the savage
  471. 19:18tearing of predators.
  472. 19:20The Shermans were beginning to feel the
  473. 19:22stress caused by these losses.
  474. 19:24Throughout 1995,
  475. 19:26the strange activity only intensified.
  476. 19:29Events took place that were frankly
  477. 19:31beyond bizarre. The lights appeared over
  478. 19:34the ranch almost every night. More
  479. 19:36poltergeist activity was experienced in
  480. 19:38the homestead. Black featureless
  481. 19:40entities began to appear, looking in
  482. 19:43through the windows and later even
  483. 19:45entering the house and standing at the
  484. 19:47ends of beds. Strange sounds would
  485. 19:50emanate from the ground, almost as if
  486. 19:52there was machinery or railroads
  487. 19:54operating beneath their feet. Their
  488. 19:56neighbors would hear this, too. They
  489. 19:58also heard disembodied voices speaking
  490. 20:01in strange languages coming from the
  491. 20:02sky. One morning, Terry woke to find
  492. 20:06huge cookie cutter-like holes dug into
  493. 20:08his land with no resulting piles of
  494. 20:11earth anywhere to be seen. Somehow,
  495. 20:13hundreds of pounds of soil had silently
  496. 20:16been removed from his property in the
  497. 20:17dead of night. In addition to this,
  498. 20:20strange creatures were spotted walking
  499. 20:22across the land. From humanoids that
  500. 20:24resembled Bigfoot to bizarre canine
  501. 20:27hyena hybrids with razor-sharp claws
  502. 20:30that would attack their livestock, there
  503. 20:32was an invisible entity that was often
  504. 20:34witnessed. Not the being itself, but the
  505. 20:36effects of its presence. Livestock would
  506. 20:39part and move out of the way as if
  507. 20:41something big and unseen ran through the
  508. 20:43middle of the herd. Water in the canal
  509. 20:45would be displaced as if large invisible
  510. 20:48feet were stomping through it. Another
  511. 20:50smaller creature was witnessed that
  512. 20:52seemed to be shrouded in some sort of
  513. 20:53cloaking device, much like the alien
  514. 20:56entity from the movie Predator.
  515. 20:58Stationary orange lights were seen in
  516. 21:00the sky, which were different to the
  517. 21:02other ones Terry often witnessed moving
  518. 21:04in the distance. The first time he saw
  519. 21:07one of these anomalies, he was sitting
  520. 21:09out on his porch on a warm summer
  521. 21:11evening when something suddenly appeared
  522. 21:13in the sky about a mile away from his
  523. 21:15position. He had been cleaning his rifle
  524. 21:17earlier on in the day and a high-powered
  525. 21:20scope just happened to be nearby. He
  526. 21:22grabbed it and proceeded to view the
  527. 21:24object through the telescopic site and
  528. 21:26what he saw left him sitting there mouth
  529. 21:29a gape. The orange object looked like
  530. 21:32some sort of portal and at its center he
  531. 21:35could see an opening. On the other side
  532. 21:37of that opening was a blue sky, even
  533. 21:39though the sun had long since set. In
  534. 21:42his mind, it looked like a gateway to
  535. 21:44another place.
  536. 21:46These anomalies became a frequent
  537. 21:48occurrence above the ranch, and Terry
  538. 21:50would later describe seeing odd-shaped
  539. 21:52craft entering and exiting these
  540. 21:54openings on several other occasions.
  541. 21:57The most disturbing of all phenomena,
  542. 21:59though, were the orbs. They were not as
  543. 22:01common as the lights or portals, but
  544. 22:03when they did appear, they were far more
  545. 22:06obvious, zipping in and out of nearby
  546. 22:08trees and harassing the livestock.
  547. 22:11These were mostly about the size of a
  548. 22:13tennis ball and had a blood red color.
  549. 22:15But every so often, larger blue ones
  550. 22:18would show up. And these were bad news.
  551. 22:23Nicknamed the blue meanies, these orbs
  552. 22:25were somehow able to instill intense
  553. 22:27fear in those who got too close to them.
  554. 22:30Perhaps it was a certain vibration or
  555. 22:32signal they gave off, which stimulated
  556. 22:34extreme anxiety. Terry and Gwen were
  557. 22:37never sure, but they feared the blue
  558. 22:39orbs more than anything else they had
  559. 22:40seen on the ranch. One evening, Terry
  560. 22:44was out on his porch again, observing
  561. 22:46the lights over his property, as he
  562. 22:47often did, when he spotted an ominous
  563. 22:50blue glow coming from the treeine in
  564. 22:52front of his house. He was immediately
  565. 22:54on guard as one of the blue orbs emerged
  566. 22:57from the thicket and slowly made its way
  567. 22:59towards him. Three of his best hunting
  568. 23:01dogs sat by his side, and the moment
  569. 23:04they saw the orb, they began to growl
  570. 23:06and bark. Without even thinking about
  571. 23:09it, Terry set them loose, and they
  572. 23:11proceeded to chase it back into the
  573. 23:13trees. Whatever fear it was able to
  574. 23:16stimulate in human beings, did not seem
  575. 23:18to affect dogs, and Terry felt his
  576. 23:21spirits lift as he considered that a
  577. 23:22small battle had been won.
  578. 23:25But then suddenly out of the darkness
  579. 23:27came three pained yelps and then
  580. 23:31nothing.
  581. 23:33He waited for a couple of hours, but his
  582. 23:35dogs never returned. He was far too
  583. 23:38scared to venture out and look for them.
  584. 23:40But in the morning, he and his son went
  585. 23:42to search the cops of trees where he had
  586. 23:44last seen them. On the ground, they
  587. 23:47found three quarterized piles of flesh
  588. 23:49smoldering in the cool morning air. This
  589. 23:53was all that was left of his dogs.
  590. 23:56This proved to be the last straw for the
  591. 23:58Sherman family. They had endured much
  592. 24:00more than they could physically take
  593. 24:02over the last 2 years. They were not
  594. 24:04getting any sleep. The kids were doing
  595. 24:06poorly at school. Gwen had lost her job
  596. 24:09at a bank in town and the whole family
  597. 24:11had taken to bunking in the same room
  598. 24:13because of the strange phenomena that
  599. 24:14was now regularly entering their
  600. 24:16household during the night. On top of
  601. 24:18this, they had lost 14 head of cattle
  602. 24:21along with family pets, and they were
  603. 24:23now on the verge of bankruptcy.
  604. 24:26Seeing those vaporized dogs, it was now
  605. 24:28becoming clear just how much danger they
  606. 24:31were in.
  607. 24:33Terry had previously contacted a local
  608. 24:35newspaper about the strange activity
  609. 24:36taking place on his ranch. And although
  610. 24:39roundly ridiculed, the story was picked
  611. 24:41up by other publications.
  612. 24:43By chance, it caught the attention of
  613. 24:46one Robert T. Bigalow, a billionaire
  614. 24:49businessman who had recently invested a
  615. 24:51significant amount of money in setting
  616. 24:53up a scientific team whose purpose was
  617. 24:55to investigate events of high stranges.
  618. 24:58He offered to purchase the ranch from
  619. 24:59the Shermans, who were only too happy to
  620. 25:01accept, and by July 1996, Terry and his
  621. 25:05family had vacated the property.
  622. 25:08Bigalow's team, the National Institute
  623. 25:10for Discovery Science or NIDS, were
  624. 25:13ready to move in by September that same
  625. 25:15year and would in fact remain at the
  626. 25:17ranch for nearly a decade, studying in
  627. 25:19detail various instances of bizarre
  628. 25:21phenomena.
  629. 25:23They would have their own stories to
  630. 25:25tell. What they encountered there was
  631. 25:27every bit as intriguing and downright
  632. 25:29terrifying as what the family had
  633. 25:31experienced.
  634. 25:32For the time being at least, whatever
  635. 25:34had been tormenting the Shermans over
  636. 25:36the last two years was about to receive
  637. 25:38some unwelcome attention. It was about
  638. 25:41to come face to face with a fearless,
  639. 25:43highly equipped, and wellunded team of
  640. 25:45investigators who were well aware of its
  641. 25:48presence. The Hunter was about to become
  642. 25:52the hunted.
