  1. 0:11Hi, everyone.
  2. 0:14This is Shinagawa Station.
  3. 0:17At Shinagawa, I’m changing trains to go to Haneda Airport.
  4. 0:25I was meeting my daughter here.
  5. 0:30Now that we’ve met up, we’re taking the train to Haneda Airport together.
  6. 0:37There are lots of people with suitcases.
  7. 0:43We’re here.
  8. 0:47We’re going in the direction that says “ANA.”
  9. 0:53We’re going through the train ticket gates.
  10. 0:59In today’s video, we’re first flying from Haneda Airport to Kagoshima Airport,
  11. 1:07and from there, we’ll catch a connecting flight to Yakushima.
  12. 1:13Yakushima is a round-shaped island in the south of Japan.
  13. 1:20There was a Pokémon vending machine.
  14. 1:26It looks like it sells stuffed toys and things like that.
  15. 1:34We checked our luggage here.
  16. 1:40They told us to show these yellow envelopes when we transferred to our next flight in Kagoshima.
  17. 1:51Apparently, it was because our flight to Kagoshima and our flight to Yakushima were with different airlines.
  18. 2:02I thought that next time, I’d try to use the same airline whenever possible.
  19. 2:11After going through security, we went to buy some lunch.
  20. 2:21We’ll get this one.
  21. 2:23Me: “Okay, this one and… that’ll be all, please.” Staff: “Certainly. Plastic bags cost extra. Would you like one?” Me: “Yes, please.” Staff: “Certainly. That will be 3 yen.”
  22. 2:31Staff: “You can earn miles. Do you have the app or a card?” Me: “No, that’s okay.” Staff: “Your total is 1,174 yen.” Me: “Um, what can I use…?”
  23. 2:41Me: “I’ll use a credit card, then.” Staff: “Certainly. I’ll select credit card for you.”
  24. 2:46Staff: “Okay, the screen has changed. You can tap or insert your card.” Me: “Okay.”
  25. 2:51Staff: “I'll put one extra pair of chopsticks, so two pairs in total, is that okay?” Me: “Yes.” Staff: “Certainly.”
  26. 2:56Staff: “Here are your items.”
  27. 2:59Staff: “And here’s your receipt. Thank you very much.” Me: “Thank you.” Daughter: “Thanks, Mom.”
  28. 3:04We’re heading to the gate.
  29. 3:12Seeing the planes always gets me excited.
  30. 3:20Me: “Hello.”
  31. 3:22We’re going to buy a sandwich and some drinks here.
  32. 3:27Me: “Okay, um, I’ll have a Starbucks Latte, size S (*Short), hot, please.”
  33. 3:32Staff: “Anything else?” Me: “And for food, (to may daughter) which one do you want?”
  34. 3:36Me: “This one?” Staff: “I’ll take that for you.”
  35. 3:39Staff: “Anything else?” Me: “Are we good? Yes, that’s all.” Staff: “Is it okay if we hand you both items?” Me: “Yes.”
  36. 3:45Staff: “That’ll be 1,119 yen.” Me: “Um, by card.” Staff: “By card, okay.”
  37. 3:49Staff: “When the terminal lights up, please tap or insert your card.”
  38. 3:52Staff: “Okay, you’re all set.”
  39. 3:54Staff: “I’ll give you your number first.”
  40. 3:57Daughter: “I wonder if they can heat this up.” Me: “Do you want them to heat it up?” Staff: “Would you like it heated up?” Me: “Yes.” Staff: “Certainly.”
  41. 4:04Staff: “Here’s your number, 196. We’re heating it up, so could you wait over here for a moment?”
  42. 4:12Atatameru (to heat something up) is often pronounced attameru in conversation.
  43. 4:20It’s easier to say.
  44. 4:24Staff: “Thank you for waiting. Here’s your clubhouse sandwich.”
  45. 4:31Omata se shimashita (thank you for waiting) is something staff often say when they give you something you’ve been waiting for.
  46. 4:42My daughter is looking for shuumai (Chinese-style steamed dumplings).
  47. 4:48Kiyouken’s shuumai are very famous.
  48. 4:54But they probably wouldn’t heat them up here, so we decided not to buy them.
  49. 5:02We found a place that sells shuumai.
  50. 5:08Me: “Excuse me, can you make this jumbo shuumai right away?” Staff: “It’ll take about one more minute.” Me: “Okay, then we’ll have one, please.” Staff: “Is that okay? Thank you!”
  51. 5:15Staff: “That’ll be 680 yen.” Me: “I’ll pay by card.” Staff: “By card.”
  52. 5:20Staff: “Okay, you can tap your card here.” Me: “Okay.” Staff: “Thank you!”
  53. 5:28Staff: “Here’s your receipt.” Me: “Okay, thank you.” Staff: “Could you wait here, please?”
  54. 5:33Staff: “Two pairs of chopsticks?” Me: “Yes.” Staff: “Okay. I’ve put in some wet wipes. There’s soy sauce and mustard if you’d like…” Me: “Okay, thank you.”
  55. 5:41We count pairs of chopsticks as ichizen, nizen.
  56. 5:46Also, otefuki is something you use to wipe your hands.
  57. 5:52The soy sauce came in a little pig-shaped container.
  58. 5:58Staff: “It’s hot, so please be careful when you eat it.” Me: “Thank you.”
  59. 6:04Omeshiagari kudasai is the respectful form (Keigo) of tabete kudasai (please eat).
  60. 6:11It’s a very polite way to say it.
  61. 6:15We’re going to quickly eat our lunch.
  62. 6:21Boarding has started.
  63. 6:28We’re getting on the plane up ahead.
  64. 6:37We’ve arrived at Kagoshima Airport.
  65. 6:42We’re changing planes here for our flight to Yakushima.
  66. 6:49We’re going to the transfer counter to check in for our connecting flight.
  67. 6:53Me: “Excuse me, hello. We’re here to transfer to a JAL flight.”
  68. 7:05We finished the transfer process.
  69. 7:09Kagoshima Airport had a place where you could lie down.
  70. 7:15We lay down for a little while too.
  71. 7:21Boarding for our flight to Yakushima has started.
  72. 7:27After going through the gate, we went down to the first floor,
  73. 7:33and got on a bus.
  74. 7:36We’re taking the bus to the plane.
  75. 7:41The plane is where that bus is stopped.
  76. 7:47Even though it’s not very far, we still take a bus.
  77. 7:53It’s a pretty small plane.
  78. 7:58As soon as we got off the bus, we could board the plane.
  79. 8:06The plane could carry 70 passengers.
  80. 8:11Our seats had a great view of the propeller.
  81. 8:17When we took off, the propeller looked like it wasn’t spinning on camera.
  82. 8:27Me: “Oh, thank you.” Daughter: “I'll take this one.” Me: “Then, I'll take this one. Thank you.”
  83. 8:34The flight attendant gave us some candy.
  84. 8:38There’s a picture of an airplane on it.
  85. 8:42The flight attendant said, “You want to take pictures of Sakurajima, right?” and showed us to seats where we could see it.
  86. 8:56We could see smoke rising from an eruption at Sakurajima.
  87. 9:03Sakurajima erupts hundreds of times a year.
  88. 9:10The volcanic ash is being carried by the wind.
  89. 9:16In Kagoshima, apparently the weather forecast even tells you which direction the volcanic ash will blow.
  90. 9:26Sakurajima also appears in my book.
  91. 9:31If you ever get the chance, I hope you’ll visit Sakurajima.
  92. 9:36And if you happen to find my book, I’d be very happy if you bought a copy.
  93. 9:41If they don’t have it, please try asking the bookstore staff.
  94. 9:47If you ask about it, they might decide to carry the book.
  95. 9:57I was so happy that I got to see Sakurajima.
  96. 10:03The flight attendant told us about the next mountain we would be able to see.
  97. 10:09Flight attendant: “In a little while, maybe in two or three minutes, you’ll be able to see a mountain called Kaimondake next… if we’re lucky.”
  98. 10:18Flight attendant: “That’s it there.”
  99. 10:20The flight attendant was so kind. I was really touched.
  100. 10:27We could see Kaimondake.
  101. 10:31It has a beautiful shape.
  102. 10:37We could see two small islands.
  103. 10:46As we were landing, the ocean got closer and closer, and I started to get scared.
  104. 10:53I thought we were going to land in the ocean.
  105. 11:00I felt relieved when I finally saw the ground.
  106. 11:09The runway was right next to the ocean.
  107. 11:15Flight attendant: “Thank you. Please watch your step as you get off.” Me: “Thank you very much.” Flight attendant: “Thank you for flying with us.”
  108. 11:21We’re getting off the plane.
  109. 11:28This is Yakushima Airport.
  110. 11:33The baggage claim area was right inside.
  111. 11:40The luggage unloaded from the plane was brought over.
  112. 11:47We'll get our luggages.
  113. 11:51My suitcase came out right away too.
  114. 11:57The exit is right after the baggage claim area.
  115. 12:03It’s a very small airport.
  116. 12:09We’re leaving the airport and heading to the tourist information center.
  117. 12:16The sign says kankou annaijo (tourist information center).
  118. 12:24She told us where we could go shopping and gave us information about the buses.
  119. 12:34This is the road right in front of Yakushima Airport.
  120. 12:42We’re going to do some shopping at a drugstore while we wait for the bus.
  121. 12:51There’s also a drugstore called Cosmos near my house.
  122. 13:00The next day, we were going on a trekking tour to see Joumon Sugi.
  123. 13:09Joumon Sugi is the most famous cedar tree in Yakushima.
  124. 13:17It’s said to be at least 2,000 years old.
  125. 13:25Jurei means the age of a tree.
  126. 13:33Joumon Sugi is in the mountains, so you have to go trekking to see it.
  127. 13:42The trek is about 22 kilometers round trip and takes around 10 hours.
  128. 13:52Since we’ll be walking for a long time, we need water and food.
  129. 14:01We came to this store to buy those things.
  130. 14:07Me: “Please.” Staff: “Okay.”
  131. 14:10Me: “Oh, and a bag, please. Oh, they are here, I’ll take this one.”
  132. 14:17Staff: “I’m sorry. We only accept cash.” Me: “Oh, cash only. Okay.” Staff: “Please pay at checkout machine number three.” Me: “Thank you.”
  133. 14:25Genkin nomi means that you can only pay in cash.
  134. 14:32At the Cosmos near my house, you can only pay in cash too. I had forgot about it.
  135. 14:43We’re heading back to the bus stop in front of the airport.
  136. 14:49That’s the bus stop.
  137. 14:55We got on the bus.
  138. 15:00The seats were covered in plastic.
  139. 15:08We’re walking from the bus stop to where we’re staying.
  140. 15:16There was a tree that looked like a gajumaru (banyan tree).
  141. 15:21We’re crossing the road.
  142. 15:27There was a cat.
  143. 15:33As we walked farther in, we found a sign.
  144. 15:39I wonder what’s down these ways.
  145. 15:45We’re going to this cottage.
  146. 15:52This is our cottage.
  147. 15:57It looks cute.
  148. 16:01Apparently, the owner built these cottages himself together with his family.
  149. 16:11It was clean and comfortable.
  150. 16:18We’re going out for dinner.
  151. 16:22This road goes all the way around Yakushima.
  152. 16:29The cars seemed to be going pretty fast.
  153. 16:36After a 17-minute walk, we arrived at the restaurant where we were having dinner.
  154. 16:44Me: “Good evening.” Staff: “Hi! Welcome!”
  155. 16:48Staff: “Do you have a reservation?” Me: “Yes. Um, I’m ___, I called a little while ago.” Staff: “Ms. ___. Yes, we’ve been expecting you.”
  156. 16:53Staff: “Your table is over there.” Me: “Okay, thank you.”
  157. 16:58Apparently, it’s best to make reservations at restaurants in Yakushima.
  158. 17:05At this restaurant, you write down your first order yourself.
  159. 17:16We’re making a toast with tankan juice and tankan soda.
  160. 17:23Me: “Cheers!” Daughter: “Cheers! Thanks, Mom.” Me: “Thank you too.”
  161. 17:27I’m grateful that I was able to come here with my daughter.
  162. 17:33The staff explained what kinds of fish were on the sushi.
  163. 17:39Us: “Thank you.” Staff: “If you’re curious, the types of fish are written here. There’s a poster on the wall.” Me: “Oh, wow. Thank you.”
  164. 17:46There was a poster showing the kinds of fish caught around Yakushima.
  165. 17:55I ordered ochazuke with flying fish.
  166. 18:00Ochazuke is rice with tea poured over it.
  167. 18:05I’m putting some aside for my daughter.
  168. 18:10Toriwakeru means to take one person’s portion from a larger dish like this.
  169. 18:21My stomach wasn’t feeling very well at the time, so I didn’t have much of an appetite.
  170. 18:30So the ochazuke was easy to eat and was just right for me.
  171. 18:37This is a flying fish.
  172. 18:40Tobiuo (flying fish) is written in kanji as “flying fish.”
  173. 18:46Another kun-reading of the kanji for “fish” is uo.
  174. 18:52Flying fish spread these large fins like wings and fly above the surface of the ocean.
  175. 19:02Flying fish are a local specialty of Yakushima.
  176. 19:07Me: “Excuse me, where do I pay?” Staff: “You can pay right here.”
  177. 19:12Staff: “Thank you very much for coming today.” Me: “It was very delicious.” Staff: “Thank you!”
  178. 19:16Staff: “Your total is 7,300 yen.” Me: “Okay, here’s 10,000 yen.” Staff: “Out of 10,000 yen. Thank you.”
  179. 19:24Staff: “Here’s 2,700 yen in change.” Me: “Thank you. Um, could I get a receipt as well? Sorry.” Staff: “Oh, a receipt? Of course.”
  180. 19:30Staff: “Thank you for waiting. Here’s your receipt.” Me: “Sorry for the trouble.” Staff: “Oh, not at all. Thank you.”
  181. 19:34Otesuu o okake shimashita is used when you’ve asked someone to do something for you.
  182. 19:41A common response to that is tondemo nai desu (no problem at all).
  183. 19:46Staff: “Thank you.” Us: “Gochisou sama deshita (thank you for the meal).” Staff: “Have a safe trip back. Thank you very much!”
  184. 19:54When we went outside, it was completely dark.
  185. 20:00We’re walking back.
  186. 20:04It was so dark that we used the lights on our phones as we walked.
  187. 20:12As I mentioned earlier, the road on the right goes all the way around Yakushima.
  188. 20:20So quite a few cars drive along this road.
  189. 20:25But once the cars pass, it becomes completely dark.
  190. 20:33Daughter: “Wait, Mom. The stars are beautiful!”
  191. 20:36The stars were so beautiful that we could even see the Milky Way.
  192. 20:42This is a photo we took two days later.
  193. 20:48I had never seen so many stars before, and I was really moved.
  194. 20:55Yakushima gets so much rain that people say, “It rains 35 days a month.”
  195. 21:06So we were very lucky to be able to see such a beautiful starry sky.
  196. 21:17The sounds of the insects were beautiful too, so have a listen.
  197. 21:41After we got back to the cottage, I got my trekking clothes ready before going to bed.
  198. 21:49Our guide was going to pick us up at 4:30 the next morning.
  199. 21:59I was worried, so I went to bed at 9:30.
  200. 22:06But I was worried about whether I could really walk for 10 hours, so I had a hard time falling asleep.
  201. 22:16In the end, I didn’t fall asleep until after midnight.
  202. 22:20So, did I make it through the 10-hour trek safely?
  203. 22:28Please look forward to next week’s video!
