Taco Bell's shredded lettuce linked to Cyclospora outbreak — Transcript

- 0:00Lettuce grown in Mexico has been linked
- 0:03to a multi-state outbreak of cycllospora
- 0:06in the US. The Food and Drug
- 0:08Administration is warning, "Do not eat
- 0:10shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco
- 0:12Bell locations in the impacted states."
- 0:15NPR's Allison Aubry reports. The
- 0:18multi-state outbreak includes
- 0:19cycllospora cases in Indiana, Kentucky,
- 0:22Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia.
- 0:24Investigators at the CDC found 1644
- 0:27people infected with cycllospora
- 0:29reported eating Taco Bell in these five
- 0:31states. An analysis of 190 cycllospora
- 0:34cases in Michigan where the person
- 0:36reported eating at Taco Bell found 90%
- 0:39of those interviewed reported eating
- 0:40iceberg lettuce. In a statement from
- 0:42Taco Bell, the company says it's taken
- 0:45immediate action to voluntarily remove
- 0:47potentially impacted lettuce in these
- 0:49states. FDA's traceback investigation
- 0:51has identified a single supplier of
- 0:54iceberg lettuce from Mexico. The
- 0:56diarrheal illness, which also leads to
- 0:58fatigue and loss of appetite, was first
- 1:00identified in May and has hospitalized
- 1:03dozens. Allison Aubrey, NPR News.
