  1. 0:00So this article came out in Korea and
  2. 0:03the headline is wild
  3. 0:05here's what it says
  4. 0:06I'm gonna translate
  5. 0:07"Jensen Huang, the guy who founded Nvidia,
  6. 0:11what did he write at his table at a KBBQ spot?
  7. 0:16This is crazy
  8. 0:17He shouted out Epik High"
  9. 0:20That's what the headline says
  10. 0:22okay, so you're probably listening to this right now
  11. 0:25or watching, us on YouTube
  12. 0:28and you're seeing the article, right?
  13. 0:30And you're probably like, "What?
  14. 0:31What are you talking about?
  15. 0:32What do you mean Jensen Huang shouted out Epik High?"
  16. 0:35So l- look at this picture
  17. 0:36There's a picture of what he wrote at his table
  18. 0:39while he was in Korea having KBBQ
  19. 0:42He wrote, "Jensen was here Love, Love, Love"
  20. 0:46And because of that, this article came out
  21. 0:48Okay I think it's far-fetched to think
  22. 0:51that he was actually shouting out Epik High
  23. 0:54because he wrote "Love love love," but
  24. 0:56why did he write "Love love love"
  25. 0:59Why three loves?
  26. 1:01I mean, it is an Epik High song, right?
  27. 1:05So today, we're gonna discuss
  28. 1:07the top 10 Epik High songs ever
  29. 1:16I highly doubt Jensen Huang was talking about our song Love Love Love,
  30. 1:21but who knows, right?
  31. 1:22I heard that uh he visited like a tech company in Korea
  32. 1:27and they played "High Technology" for him
  33. 1:30which is also an Epik High song, right?
  34. 1:32So it can't be a coincidence
  35. 1:34I don't know
  36. 1:35I wanna think he was shouting out Epik High's song,
  37. 1:38but I highly doubt it
  38. 1:41while we're on the topic of top 10 Epik High songs ever,
  39. 1:45if you wanna hear the songs I discussed today,
  40. 1:47we're doing a tour in North America, USA and Canada
  41. 1:51So if you wanna check out Epik High in October, please go to EpikHigh.com
  42. 1:56and you'll find the ticket links
  43. 1:59Okay, so top 10 Epik High songs ever is pretty hard to do
  44. 2:05because we have so many songs,
  45. 2:07and our fans are very passionate about what song they like
  46. 2:13And they're gonna be very pissed off
  47. 2:15that I left out Like 390 songs
  48. 2:19But what can I do?
  49. 2:20I, I can only fit 10 on this list
  50. 2:23So here's the criteria for,
  51. 2:25how I'm including the top 10, okay?
  52. 2:28Because it's hard for me too
  53. 2:29First of all, it has to have an awesome backstory,
  54. 2:33like a story that I've never told
  55. 2:37And two, it has to have proven someone wrong
  56. 2:41Because one thing that you know I love to do
  57. 2:45is prove people wrong
  58. 2:47You know, Tablo, 625%
  59. 2:50This is gonna play a huge factor in what song goes on this playlist
  60. 2:54First of all since we mentioned Love Love Love,
  61. 2:58that's gotta go in the top 10, right?
  62. 3:00No doubt
  63. 3:01So we'll start the playlist with that
  64. 3:03Hold on
  65. 3:04"Love Love Love."
  66. 3:05Okay, I'll call this
  67. 3:08Tablo's Top 10 Epik High songs ever
  68. 3:20Okay, Love Love Love is on the list
  69. 3:24So the second song I wanna put on this playlist is
  70. 3:26Epik High's Fan
  71. 3:29It's one of our most loved songs
  72. 3:31Oh, by the way, I'm making a top 10,
  73. 3:34but none of these are like in any order, okay?
  74. 3:37So any of these could be Number one or number two, okay?
  75. 3:41So Fan is the second song I'm putting on this playlist
  76. 3:45This is song has kind of a weird backstory,
  77. 3:48but it's not about the actual song
  78. 3:50It's about the the dance that we do
  79. 3:53You, you must have seen it, right?
  80. 3:54If you're a fan of K-pop,
  81. 3:56you may have seen, like, recent challenges where a lot of boy groups were doing,
  82. 4:02the, the Fan running thing
  83. 4:04So it's this thing
  84. 4:07오, 가질 수가 없어도
  85. 4:09This thing, okay?
  86. 4:11If you love us,
  87. 4:13you think it looks good
  88. 4:14But if you don't love us,
  89. 4:17you think it looks really stupid, right?
  90. 4:20and here's how this dance came to be
  91. 4:24So the song was coming out,
  92. 4:27this was our title track,
  93. 4:28and we had a show that we had to go on
  94. 4:31it was gonna be like a pre-taped thing so
  95. 4:34we had to go shoot this show
  96. 4:36And the night before we're like "Okay let's practice."
  97. 4:40So we're like practicing in front of mirrors but like
  98. 4:42why do we even need mirrors right
  99. 4:44'Cause, like Epik High has no choreography
  100. 4:47It's just the dancers doing their thing, right?
  101. 4:49And we're just, like, rapping,
  102. 4:51but we're practicing for this show
  103. 4:53And, you know, the fan hook, like,
  104. 4:56the, the tempo picks up and it, it goes,
  105. 4:58like, super fast, right?
  106. 5:00And it, there's like this dramatic tension,
  107. 5:03but just standing there kinda looked boring
  108. 5:07So we're like, "Man, there's gotta be something we can do here,
  109. 5:10like, during the hook
  110. 5:12because it just feels weird that the dancers are,
  111. 5:14like, going crazy but we're just sorta standing there"
  112. 5:17And I'm like, "Well, what can we do?" And
  113. 5:19the leader of the dance group,
  114. 5:21he was like,
  115. 5:23"Well, it's not like you guys are gonna be able to dance though, right, Hyung(bro)?"
  116. 5:26And I'm like "Right."
  117. 5:28And he's like, "So like what, what can we possibly do?" And I was like,
  118. 5:32"I don't know There's gotta be like something we can do here, right?"
  119. 5:35And he's like, "Well, what are you gonna do?
  120. 5:37Like, like run?"
  121. 5:40And we're like, "What? Wait a minute here
  122. 5:44It's not that bad, right?"
  123. 5:45And he's like, "What?" And we're like,
  124. 5:48"Do that again" And he does it again,
  125. 5:49and we're like, "Okay, let's, let's try it
  126. 5:51Oh 가질수가 없어도! And we started,
  127. 5:52like, running, right?
  128. 5:54So the whole... The dance crew is like
  129. 5:57Okay, are you really gonna do this, right?
  130. 5:58'Cause 'cause
  131. 6:00it's a huge risk here
  132. 6:01'cause Epik High has never done, like, dancing to a song,
  133. 6:05and this is not even really a dance
  134. 6:08like, people may hate it, right?
  135. 6:11But we're like, "I mean, it looks better than just standing there"
  136. 6:14So the dance crew changed their choreography
  137. 6:17to match our run,
  138. 6:19and we practiced, like, maybe, like, five times,
  139. 6:22and then we went to shoot the show the next day
  140. 6:25Up until, like, the recording,
  141. 6:27up until we actually did the stage,
  142. 6:31I felt fine with the decision
  143. 6:33I was like, "Okay, this is gonna be a lot better than just standing there"
  144. 6:37But, like, minutes before g- stepping on stage,
  145. 6:42you know, you suddenly have second thoughts
  146. 6:45And you're like, "Wait a minute,"
  147. 6:46like, "Is this gonna be okay?”
  148. 6:49Oh, my, We look stupid as hell
  149. 6:53what do we do?
  150. 6:53We can't change it now, right?
  151. 6:54Like, we've already done rehearsals
  152. 6:56Like, cameras expect this
  153. 6:58And we're like, "Oh, what the f**k?"
  154. 6:59There's, like, a crowd, too,
  155. 7:00and we're like, "Oh my God Oh my God"
  156. 7:02We go on stage, and I'm like, "Okay, f**k it
  157. 7:04We just gotta do it" We did it, right?
  158. 7:07And let me just, let me just say, Epik High's image at this, juncture of our career,
  159. 7:13like, we were known as, like, artists, right? And
  160. 7:21here's Epik High with their new song,
  161. 7:23and all of a sudden we're doing this weird, like, running thing
  162. 7:27And the crowd at first, when,
  163. 7:29when we did it, the crowd was like, "Oh O- okay What?" Right?
  164. 7:35And, so the show, we recorded the show,
  165. 7:38and the, and the And it was gonna come out,
  166. 7:40like, a few days later So show ends,
  167. 7:42and we go to have, dinner together
  168. 7:45And, my friend from Nell, he came, right?
  169. 7:50And he was hanging out with us
  170. 7:52And, I showed him, like one of our managers took, like, a video of, like, the monitor screen
  171. 7:59and I showed him what we had done
  172. 8:02And he's like, "What the f**k is this?" He, he's like, "Oh, oh, no," right?
  173. 8:10And I'm like, "Is it that bad?"
  174. 8:11And he's like, "Well, it's not that it's good or bad,
  175. 8:16it's just Kind of, it's like weird, right?
  176. 8:19And I'm like, "We already shot it What do I do?"
  177. 8:22Like, our career is gonna end in a few days, right?
  178. 8:25And we also have 인기가요 tomorrow, right?
  179. 8:27We have, like, a live sh- shoot the next morning as well
  180. 8:32I'm like, "Should I just take it out?"
  181. 8:34And he's like, "But wouldn't it be weird if you're standing for the
  182. 8:38Because the, the live thing you're doing tomorrow
  183. 8:40is gonna be the first thing that- Audiences actually see
  184. 8:44And then the thing you taped is gonna come out So if, if it looks
  185. 8:48like you're just running for that show that you taped,
  186. 8:52wouldn't it be weirder?
  187. 8:53Because that show was, this show called Love Letter,
  188. 8:57I think, which was, like, for artists
  189. 9:00Like, it was for bands and, like, legit artists
  190. 9:04It, it was not supposed to be a place where you dance Okay?
  191. 9:08Or run
  192. 9:09So I'm like, I'm like, "Oh, what do I do?
  193. 9:11What do I do? What do we do?
  194. 9:12Like, are we screwed?"
  195. 9:14And then we go to 인기가요,
  196. 9:16and, we're like, "We, we gotta just, you know, we gotta just power through this"
  197. 9:21So, and it was a live broadcast We did it, and here's the thing
  198. 9:27We came out after the show,
  199. 9:28and I'm like, "Okay, all, all these other idols there and all these other musicians are gonna, like, think we're a joke now," right?
  200. 9:36They used to look up to us
  201. 9:38But now they just saw us doing this weird-ass dance,
  202. 9:41and now they're just gonna, like, laugh at us, right?
  203. 9:44I come down,
  204. 9:45but here's the thing We came off stage,
  205. 9:47came to, like, the waiting area,
  206. 9:49and when we walked in, Super Junior,
  207. 9:52some of their members were there,
  208. 9:54and they were doing the thing when we walked in
  209. 9:57And I was I At first, when I saw it,
  210. 9:59I was like, "Oh, here we go Here we go
  211. 10:02The, the insults begin," right?
  212. 10:04"The clowning on us begins"
  213. 10:07But they were like,
  214. 10:08"형, this is, this is f**king awesome" I
  215. 10:10'm like, "Really?" And Heechul,
  216. 10:12I remember Heechul was like,
  217. 10:14"No," he's like, "I love it"
  218. 10:15And I'm like, "Are you kidding or like for, for real?"
  219. 10:18And he's like, "No, no, it's like, it's like, it's, it's, this is gonna blow up"
  220. 10:21Of course, there were some people that were laughing at us,
  221. 10:24but it did blow up
  222. 10:26And then we went to number one right away
  223. 10:28the song became a huge hit
  224. 10:30and Literally everybody was doing it, right?
  225. 10:35Like, we would go to shoot something
  226. 10:37and other artists there will be like,
  227. 10:39they'll see us and they'll go, "Ah"
  228. 10:42They'll, like, run towards us from over there
  229. 10:44They're like, "Hyung" Right? "Oppa"
  230. 10:48And they're all running over, right?
  231. 10:50So this is a case of where, um,
  232. 10:53trying something new
  233. 10:57And something out of your comfort zone is,
  234. 10:59i- is a huge risk where, like, you could,
  235. 11:04you could g- get made fun of by,
  236. 11:06like, the whole Basically, like, imagine, like, being in middle school, right?
  237. 11:10And you do something at a talent show, and it, can result in, people applauding you or,
  238. 11:17like, absolutely s**tting on you for the rest of the school year
  239. 11:22And that's sort of what, the music industry was like, right?
  240. 11:27Like, because during those times, you would go to shoot, like, a music show,
  241. 11:31and all the artists would be, like, together almost
  242. 11:36So if we do something embarrassing,
  243. 11:40we have to, like, sit through that like s-
  244. 11:43like we're in middle school,
  245. 11:45like at a cafeteria and,
  246. 11:48have people, like, kind of whisper about us
  247. 11:51and make fun of us, right?
  248. 11:53Which is really embarrassing,
  249. 11:55but like, it, it was a case where it turned out really well
  250. 12:00And now decades later, there's new artists
  251. 12:05that are t- that are doing it But again,
  252. 12:08because of this initial experience,
  253. 12:12I've mentioned this before,
  254. 12:14but when the whole fan challenge was going on recently,
  255. 12:18every single time I saw an artist post the dance I wasn't sure
  256. 12:24if they were doing it to, like, pay homage
  257. 12:27or make fun of us
  258. 12:29It's this fine line, right? I'm like, "Oh, I'm so grateful
  259. 12:34Oh my God, like, how do they know this song?
  260. 12:36Oh, this is awesome"
  261. 12:37And then this small voice inside me is like,
  262. 12:40"Are they making fun of me?"
  263. 12:43The next song in Tablo's top 10 Epik High songs ever, Peace Day, 평화의 날
  264. 12:49This song was- off our second album,
  265. 12:52and until our second album was done,
  266. 12:56we were not well-known
  267. 12:59Like, we didn't have a huge fandom
  268. 13:02that came later with the third album But when we were about
  269. 13:07to release the song, 평화의 날,
  270. 13:10we already had one album that didn't do well,
  271. 13:13and this was gonna be our second album, right?
  272. 13:15So A lot was riding on this second album
  273. 13:19because our contract with Woollim, our company at the time,
  274. 13:24was for three albums So with this-- If this second album fails as well,
  275. 13:29it- we are, like, close to just, you know, being ended as a, as a group because
  276. 13:37we would have only one more shot,
  277. 13:40but if two albums fail in a row,
  278. 13:42it's very unlikely that the company's gonna really invest in us
  279. 13:47or push us, right?
  280. 13:48And already with the second album,
  281. 13:50like they had basically cut our music budget to zero
  282. 13:56And they told us that they can't invest any money,
  283. 14:00for us to get songs or producers or, you know, collaborators,
  284. 14:05which strangely turned out to be awesome
  285. 14:09because it forced us to make our own music
  286. 14:14Like the second album was the first time we actually made the beats and,
  287. 14:20you know, the melodies and lyrics, and we did everything without any you know,
  288. 14:24help from like a famous producer, because we just can't,
  289. 14:27we just couldn't afford them
  290. 14:29We- our budget was literally zero
  291. 14:31So we're working on the album and,
  292. 14:34most of the album was like very hip hop,
  293. 14:38but I felt like we needed a song
  294. 14:41that would stick out so much that, people would take notice of us, right?
  295. 14:47Even i- in a negative way
  296. 14:49So my thinking was, like, because there were a lot of hip hop groups coming out Like,
  297. 14:54this was before hip hop was big in Korea,
  298. 14:55but there were a lot of hip hop groups that were coming out, right?
  299. 14:59And they all had pretty much the, like, the same sound It was all boom bap
  300. 15:04and kinda serious
  301. 15:05And I was like, "We gotta put something out this time that,
  302. 15:08um makes people either love us or hate us
  303. 15:12It, it doesn't really matter
  304. 15:13They need to, like, notice us
  305. 15:15and even if they, you know, click on our album because
  306. 15:19they wanna, like, s**t on us,
  307. 15:21they'll check out the other songs
  308. 15:23and they'll be like, "Oh, they're actually, like, very good
  309. 15:27Like, the music is actually very good," right?
  310. 15:29So I'll-- I wanted the title track to be something
  311. 15:32that just is very noticeable and flashy
  312. 15:35And 평화의 날, Peace Day, was- Just that song, right?
  313. 15:39But when I, you know, came up with the song,
  314. 15:41when I made the beat and then I played it for my members,
  315. 15:45Tukutz was, like, super against it
  316. 15:47Like, some of you know this story
  317. 15:48because I, you know, we've talked about it on various shows
  318. 15:52But Tukutz was like At the time,
  319. 15:54Tukutz was like a hip hop warrior Like,
  320. 15:59he was not willing to accept any song that was like
  321. 16:04faster than a certain BPM
  322. 16:06I- if anything wasn't boom bap,
  323. 16:09he just didn't even consider it music
  324. 16:12And he was so against, this song that I think,
  325. 16:19I think he like, he like, he knew that I,
  326. 16:23he couldn't really change my mind,
  327. 16:26but like, he was just like, "Okay, I'll, I'll let him just do what he wants to do
  328. 16:31I'll let Tablo, you know, go with this song,
  329. 16:33and if this song comes out
  330. 16:35and it does bad,
  331. 16:36I'll just leave the group
  332. 16:37I, I, I think that's what he thought, right?
  333. 16:39So I made the song
  334. 16:41and then I played it for my company,
  335. 16:43and what's crazy is the company thought the same way
  336. 16:49They're like, "This, this is like, this isn't hip-hop
  337. 16:53People are gonna be like, 'What the f**k is this?'" Right?
  338. 16:56And they, they, like
  339. 16:57'cause Like having melodies
  340. 17:00and having like a fast beat
  341. 17:01with all these like, you know, it,
  342. 17:03it had like elements of like electronica
  343. 17:06and it was just, it was just weird
  344. 17:08But I was like,
  345. 17:09"this is what I wanna do"
  346. 17:10And the company was against it
  347. 17:12and they were like,
  348. 17:13"We should go with another song,
  349. 17:15on the album as the titles track"
  350. 17:18And I was like, "I like all the songs on the album,"
  351. 17:20and you know I you know I worked,
  352. 17:22I made all those songs
  353. 17:23so of course I love them too,
  354. 17:25but this is the one that will get us attention
  355. 17:27And the company was super against it
  356. 17:29And we got into a huge fight,
  357. 17:31and the company demanded that we use another song as the title's track
  358. 17:37But...
  359. 17:38I'm me, right?
  360. 17:42And I was me even back then,
  361. 17:44although I wasn't, like, a star or
  362. 17:46I didn't really have any pull in the industry or at my company
  363. 17:51so what I did, the night before the music- Video shoot
  364. 17:55for another song the, the company selected that Tukutz liked
  365. 18:00I called the music video director
  366. 18:04and I told him,
  367. 18:06"We are changing songs for tomorrow's shoot"
  368. 18:10And he's like, "What?"
  369. 18:11And I was like, "I know the company told you to shoot for this other song,
  370. 18:16but we're gonna shoot 평화의 날
  371. 18:19We're gonna shoot Peace Day"
  372. 18:21And he's like, "Doe the CEO know about this?"
  373. 18:25And I was like, "No.”
  374. 18:26“but it's the right decision. Trust me" Right? And he's like,
  375. 18:30"Are you, are you f**king crazy?" And I was like,
  376. 18:33"Can you please do this for me?"
  377. 18:35And I sent him the song,
  378. 18:36and I also sent him, like, my ideas for the music video,
  379. 18:39and I was like, "I know it's, like, not gonna be easy,
  380. 18:41but with the sets that we have, we can easily fix this situation and,
  381. 18:47and shoot the way I want" Right?
  382. 18:49So he gets to work the night before
  383. 18:52And is preparing it We get to the shoot,
  384. 18:55and we're seriously just shooting Peace Day Okay?
  385. 18:59When we're supposed to be shooting something else
  386. 19:01In the middle of the shoot,
  387. 19:04the CEO of Woollim, 중엽이 형
  388. 19:07he comes to the shoot, right?
  389. 19:09And he's f**king pissed, right?
  390. 19:12Because the managers at, on location contacted him
  391. 19:15And they were like, you know, "These guys are shooting another song"
  392. 19:19Like, what's going on, right?
  393. 19:20So he drove all the way there
  394. 19:22He came in and he's, and like I, I see him
  395. 19:25I, I'm like shooting still,
  396. 19:26and he comes in and he's like y- you know, arguing with the director
  397. 19:32He throws a chair, screams, and leaves, right?
  398. 19:34And I get it
  399. 19:36I would be very pissed too, right?
  400. 19:38He's the one who's, who has to pay for this
  401. 19:41So he's like super pissed He leaves
  402. 19:43My members are sort of like pissed as well because they're like,
  403. 19:47you know, "Why are you crea- creating this drama?"
  404. 19:50Anyways, it, the director's like, "Cut,"
  405. 19:52and he's like, "I told you this was gonna happen"
  406. 19:55And I was like, "I know, I know, but one day
  407. 19:58they'll all realize this was the right decision"
  408. 20:02And he's like, "Well, I hope you're right because...
  409. 20:04there’s a high chance I'm not getting paid"
  410. 20:07And I was like,
  411. 20:07"I'll make sure you get paid e- even if we make nothing
  412. 20:10Like, it, I'll make, whatever we make from this album,
  413. 20:13I'll give it to you if he doesn't pay you."
  414. 20:15So we shot the music video
  415. 20:17It came out
  416. 20:18and um not surprising for me
  417. 20:23but to the surprise of everyone
  418. 20:25this song charted pretty well
  419. 20:27even though we weren't famous right
  420. 20:30And, word started getting around that,
  421. 20:34like you know, Epik High,
  422. 20:36there's this group Epik High, and they're like, their, their music is like,
  423. 20:39it's, it isn't hip hop,
  424. 20:41but it's also not like- K-pop
  425. 20:43It's it's, it's kind of weird,
  426. 20:46but, like, they're worth paying attention to, right? and
  427. 20:51Of course, the second album didn't, like, quote-unquote,
  428. 20:55like, blow up or anything It, it wasn't,
  429. 20:57like, a huge commercial success,
  430. 21:00but this song started getting, like, word of mouth going about Epik High
  431. 21:05And just as I had planned,
  432. 21:08people started listening to our other songs
  433. 21:10And they were like, "Oh, when they do hip hop,
  434. 21:12their hip hop is really good, too" Right?
  435. 21:15And our boss eventually
  436. 21:18was like, "You know, you were right"
  437. 21:20Tukutz was ready to quit the group
  438. 21:28I think he was more upset that the song actually worked out-
  439. 21:32and that this may mean we have to go in this direction forever, right?
  440. 21:37So I, he Legitimately like if I was him,
  441. 21:41I would be mad too, right?
  442. 21:42Like, 'cause he, he probably entered Epik High
  443. 21:44wanting to do, like, more traditional, like more classic hip-hop
  444. 21:49And, for the leader to suddenly go in such a drastically different direction,
  445. 21:56I'm sure he was legitimately unhappy, right?
  446. 22:00Like I, I, I get it
  447. 22:01And, but he like, you know, he threatened to quit the group The CEO was like,
  448. 22:05you know, "We don't have to break the group up
  449. 22:07You just have to leave" Right?
  450. 22:09And then he, he stayed
  451. 22:12But eventually, it, it all made sense
  452. 22:16because the next song I'm putting on this playlist
  453. 22:19is Epik High's Fly
  454. 22:21Fly is going into Tablo's top 10 Epik High songs ever,
  455. 22:25and not just because it was a, you know, it was our biggest hit
  456. 22:28It was our first smash single
  457. 22:31and, made Epik High What we are
  458. 22:35but I'm putting this in becaus e the song before this, Peace Day,
  459. 22:39Tukutz was hella pissed
  460. 22:42and ready to break up the group over it, right?
  461. 22:45But this song, Fly,
  462. 22:48I made it because Tukutz came up to me and was like,
  463. 22:52"Can you make something like Peace Day again?" "We need a hit"
  464. 22:59This might be our last album with this company or, like, at all
  465. 23:03Like, the next one has to hit
  466. 23:06Can you make something like Peace Day?
  467. 23:08And I was like, "What?"
  468. 23:12So I made Fly,
  469. 23:14and that's literally the backstory, right?
  470. 23:17And then I I played it for Tukutz and he's like-
  471. 23:21"This is gonna blow up
  472. 23:22and make us some money for once Right?
  473. 23:25Because at this point, we, we weren't making any money
  474. 23:28Like, we were getting noticed,
  475. 23:29but we still hadn't made any money off music
  476. 23:33we didn't have, like, a hit, hit song, right?
  477. 23:36But he, he listened to it and he was like,
  478. 23:37"This is exactly what I was asking for"
  479. 23:41And I was like, "Okay, I'm glad you like it
  480. 23:42Let's go"
  481. 23:43There's a, there's a phrase in Korea
  482. 23:44called 금융치료
  483. 23:48like finances are the cure, right?
  484. 23:52So, um Fly came out and luckily it blew up
  485. 23:57and we started making some money finally after three years
  486. 24:04So that's going on this playlist
  487. 24:06Circling back to Peace Day,
  488. 24:07it wasn't right for me to not tell my label,
  489. 24:12like the head of the label that we were going to do something like that
  490. 24:16But the reason why I had to do it was I knew he would say no
  491. 24:20Like I said We had fought so many times over what song
  492. 24:25would become the title track that, like, I knew he would never say yes
  493. 24:29But I also felt like I was, I,
  494. 24:32I was just so sure in my heart
  495. 24:34that this was the right decision
  496. 24:36and that it, it would benefit everyone eventually
  497. 24:39It, it just, it w- isn't visible yet,
  498. 24:42but one day the dots will connect and they'll get it
  499. 24:46But they just, they,
  500. 24:46they just can't get it yet,
  501. 24:48and I can't convince them
  502. 24:50I can't convince them with something happening in the future, right?
  503. 24:54So I'm just gonna let them hate me,
  504. 24:58yell at me,
  505. 24:59but do it and then prove them wrong
  506. 25:03Fortunately, it worked out,
  507. 25:04but what I'm saying is th- sometimes the lesson to take is
  508. 25:07you gotta take huge risks sometimes
  509. 25:10And, by risk,
  510. 25:12I mean, like, risking having the people you care about
  511. 25:17And the people you're doing- you're taking this risk for hating you about it
  512. 25:22Sometimes like as a, as a parent, as a friend,
  513. 25:26as like a, like, like a leader of a, like a company or like a band
  514. 25:31or like a group of friends,
  515. 25:34you gotta do something that you know will benefit all, right?
  516. 25:39But they will hate that you are doing it
  517. 25:43They will hate you for it,
  518. 25:44even though it's for them
  519. 25:46But if you believe, like, in your heart that this, this will work out,
  520. 25:52you just, you just gotta do it
  521. 25:55And it took almost a year for, Peace Day to really be proven right and,
  522. 26:04for us to drop Fly, and everything made sense once, once it all worked out
  523. 26:09But I, I'm, I'm saying,
  524. 26:10like- Sometimes you just gotta,
  525. 26:11you just gotta do it
  526. 26:12Now, if it didn't work out, now
  527. 26:17if it didn't work out the way I imagined,
  528. 26:20Epik High would've, you know, broken up
  529. 26:24Tukutz would be somewhere telling someone,
  530. 26:26"It was all because, you know Remember Tablo? That guy?
  531. 26:31That guy, that guy that supposedly went to Stanford?"
  532. 26:35"Well he wanted to fucking go with that song and then everyone hated it
  533. 26:40And then, you know, it's like that's when my, like, dreams of being a musician ended,
  534. 26:46thanks to that guy”
  535. 26:47And then Mithra will be at, like, some, you know, matjip,
  536. 26:50like, doing some mukbang
  537. 26:53And, and someone's like, someone's like, "Oh, I used to be a fan of, Epik High
  538. 26:57Your second album was great"
  539. 26:59except why why'd guys go with that 평화의 날, that Peace Day song?"
  540. 27:04he's gonna be like drop his spoon
  541. 27:05and he's like
  542. 27:07"Please don't fucking talk about Tablo in front of me."
  543. 27:11To be honest, Mithra might actually be happier if that-
  544. 27:16if this parallel universe actually happened
  545. 27:20and he was doing mukbangs,
  546. 27:21because mukbangs make a lot of money
  547. 27:25Respect to mukbangers
  548. 27:27The next song I'm putting on Epik High's top 10 greatest songs
  549. 27:32it’s gonna be a surprise
  550. 27:34because it is a song
  551. 27:38produced by DJ Tukutz
  552. 27:42and it is Epik High
  553. 27:44"Here Come the Regrets."
  554. 27:46So this song was mentioned, on a previous episode of Hey Tablo
  555. 27:51It was the song that almost went to Kanye
  556. 27:55Kanye wanted the song
  557. 27:57and he took it for what we presume,
  558. 28:01would be Life of Pablo, that album
  559. 28:05it never came out So
  560. 28:08when the song didn't come out, Tukutz was crushed, right?
  561. 28:12Because he, he worked really hard on this song,
  562. 28:15and it was It's a, it's a great song
  563. 28:17And Tukutz is like, "f**k"
  564. 28:21"This- I listened to the whole album and it's not on there"
  565. 28:24And I was like, "You didn't see the- track list
  566. 28:26Like, it wasn't on the track list
  567. 28:28And he's like, "I know, but maybe I thought he, like, changed the title
  568. 28:31Maybe he, like, slipped it in there, like, as a hidden track, you know?"
  569. 28:35And I'm like, "Well, what do you wanna do with it?
  570. 28:38Do you want me to, like, turn it into, like, an Epik High song?"
  571. 28:40And he's like, "Yeah"
  572. 28:43So I wrote the first verse to this song,
  573. 28:46and we wanted it to be an Epik High song,
  574. 28:49so we had to get Mithra, to do verse two
  575. 28:53But We thought it would be weird if the first verse is in English,
  576. 29:00Lee Hi's hook is in English,
  577. 29:02but Mithra just alone raps in Korean
  578. 29:05And here's the thing,
  579. 29:06Tukutz like was so mad about the song like not materializing on Kanye's album
  580. 29:13that he, he, he was like, "I want the whole song in English
  581. 29:16I want I want someone in the States
  582. 29:19to hear it and then like pass it on to him"
  583. 29:22And like, I want him to know like, what he missed out on, right?
  584. 29:26I'm like, "I'm not sure he's gonna listen to, us rapping
  585. 29:30and think that he missed out on it"
  586. 29:32Like, he's like, "No, just do it all in English"
  587. 29:34So I was like, "Okay, so you want m- me to make Mithra rap in English?"
  588. 29:41And he's like, "Yeah"
  589. 29:42I'm like, "Okay, this is gonna be harder than actually making the beat for this song"
  590. 29:48So I wrote Mithra's verse
  591. 29:50'Cause obviously he, he doesn't speak English, right?
  592. 29:53So I wrote him his verse
  593. 29:54and I was like, "Mithra, um, Tukutz wants you to rap in English
  594. 29:58So it's not gonna be easy,
  595. 30:00but I will guide you through it,
  596. 30:02and I will direct you
  597. 30:03And, we will do it until you sound great
  598. 30:07Trust me, you can do this, right?"
  599. 30:09And Mithra's like, "What?"
  600. 30:13He's like, "I don't, I don't speak English"
  601. 30:15And I was like, "I know We all know The whole world knows that"
  602. 30:19That's why it's gonna be such a surprise when you, when you pop out,
  603. 30:24you know, on the second verse and you're rapping entirely in English
  604. 30:27Like, imagine, like imagine the fans in North America
  605. 30:30where we're touring by the way,
  606. 30:33epikhigh.com, get tickets
  607. 30:34But imagine their surprise
  608. 30:36when you suddenly rap in, like, perfect English, right?
  609. 30:40And he's like, "Yeah, that's the problem How am I gonna do perfect English?"
  610. 30:43So we go into the booth
  611. 30:45It took Way less than I imagined
  612. 30:49because we did a lot of prep work
  613. 30:51I sent him, like recordings of how to pronounce the words,
  614. 30:56and I didn't wanna, like, write his verse in a way where,
  615. 31:00like, the words are easy, like too easy
  616. 31:02I wanted him to really spit out complicated words and,
  617. 31:08and make the rap like a legit, you know, complex rap,
  618. 31:13but Mithra's doing it, right?
  619. 31:15which makes it awesome So he really practiced and he came to the studio and like I was surprised
  620. 31:21He, he got it done like pretty quick
  621. 31:23Tukutz was very happy,
  622. 31:25and the song came out and luckily,
  623. 31:28you know, everyone loved the song
  624. 31:29There's a lesson here
  625. 31:30There were lines that, he had difficulty with
  626. 31:34and he would constantly make mistakes
  627. 31:37Like he, he got through most of the verse
  628. 31:38but there was like one line where he had to record like maybe 80 times, right? But
  629. 31:44But because he had me as a pronunciation coach,
  630. 31:48I, I would, you know, correct his mistakes as they happened
  631. 31:52And what was amazing was that when I corrected his mistakes,
  632. 31:55Mithra, like, was able to, like, make it stick
  633. 31:58Because mistakes you ignore become mistakes you repeat
  634. 32:03Our sponsor Speak keeps you practicing until you move past those mistakes

  654. 33:04top 10 Epik High songs ever is Umbrella
  655. 33:09You're gonna be like, "Well, obviously
  656. 33:11I mean, it's, like, your biggest song
  657. 33:14Why would you not put it on the top 10?"
  658. 33:16Well, here's the reason why I'm putting it on the top 10
  659. 33:19You don't know this
  660. 33:22So the reason why I made this song, okay, it, it came to me while I was eating jokbal
  661. 33:27You might know that story, right?
  662. 33:29It was raining I was eating really good jokbal,
  663. 33:32and the song just came to me all at once
  664. 33:34Melody you know, the, the, the beat
  665. 33:37Also, like The lyrics, everything just, you know, clicked for me
  666. 33:41And then I ran to my house and I, you know, did a sketch,
  667. 33:45and then the rest is history
  668. 33:46But the reason why I wanted to make a song like Umbrella,
  669. 33:50up until that point, we had hits like Fan,
  670. 33:54Love, Love, Love We had Fly before that
  671. 33:57But, we never, ever did a song
  672. 34:00that was like an, like a ballad
  673. 34:03Now Epik High
  674. 34:05is sort of known for these songs
  675. 34:07like Love Story,
  676. 34:09you know we have a lot of these songs, right?
  677. 34:11So people say that it's,
  678. 34:13it's very Epik High-ish,
  679. 34:16but back then before Umbrella,
  680. 34:19we never had a song like that where it,
  681. 34:22where it was a lot of melody,
  682. 34:23where the beat was sort of like a traditional Korean ballad
  683. 34:27And the reason why I wanted to do a song like that for our fifth album
  684. 34:33was because this, there was this incident
  685. 34:36so at the time there was, like, another musician that was sort of,
  686. 34:42well, really big at that time
  687. 34:44He, he was a singer-songwriter
  688. 34:46and, he, he was producing for, like, this group of his
  689. 34:50He, he was sort of known at the time as sort of like a genius
  690. 34:54Like the artist, right?
  691. 34:56The hot singer-songwriter And I,
  692. 34:59I sort of had kind of a friendship with him
  693. 35:03And this one time we had to do a show together,
  694. 35:06so we were backstage together
  695. 35:08And there were other people there,
  696. 35:11and he was like, "Hey, Tablo, congrats on, like Fly and Paris”
  697. 35:16And I was like, "Thanks"
  698. 35:18And he's like, "You know, you're pretty good at making music now"
  699. 35:23I was like, "Okay"
  700. 35:26And, he was working with some legendary artists
  701. 35:30who were also known as, like, huge singer-songwriters, right?
  702. 35:33And he started name-dropping them,
  703. 35:35and he's like, "You know, they asked me to write a song for them"
  704. 35:38But basically, if these legends ask him for a song, it means,
  705. 35:43like, he's on their level as a singer-songwriter, right?
  706. 35:45So that's, that's probably the point he was trying to make
  707. 35:48So he's like, you know, he's like bragging about, like, the stuff he's working on
  708. 35:51And I'm like, "Where is he going with this?
  709. 35:53Like, why, why, like why is he saying all of this to me?"
  710. 35:57And he's like, "You know, you, you know,
  711. 35:59if you wanna like work with us,
  712. 36:00oh, oh, right, right, you don't you,
  713. 36:02you're not able to make songs like that"
  714. 36:06And I was like, "Hmm?"
  715. 36:08I was like, "Excuse me?"
  716. 36:10and he's like, "Yeah, 'cause you make like, you know, you make I mean, you make songs like Love, Love, Love, but it's like,
  717. 36:15it's like a it's still like a rap song
  718. 36:20And I'm like, "Okay, so what the f**k, right?" Um,
  719. 36:25but he, the point he was trying to make is,
  720. 36:27like, he's working with these legendary ballad, musicians,
  721. 36:31and they're getting songs from him
  722. 36:33And, and you will never be able to,
  723. 36:35Tablo, stay in your lane
  724. 36:38And I was like, "What the f**k?"
  725. 36:39Like, this is totally, like, unprovoked Like,
  726. 36:44I don't even care about this guy enough to,
  727. 36:46like- Have a, have a rivalry, right?
  728. 36:49Like, why is he doing this, right?
  729. 36:51And then we had to go on stage together
  730. 36:53So we're like on stage, I'm like smiling,
  731. 36:55I just do the show,
  732. 36:56and I k- kind of forgot about it
  733. 36:58Then, you know, every once in a while,
  734. 37:00like it would just kinda like pop into my head, right? 'Cause like
  735. 37:05he would release other songs and,
  736. 37:08you know, I used to really like his music too
  737. 37:10So I'm like, I'm like, "Why is he doing this," right?
  738. 37:14And then, and then I,
  739. 37:16I thought to myself, like, you know, I can definitely write a song like that
  740. 37:22I can write better than him if I want to
  741. 37:26So I was like, "Okay, next album I'm gonna put in a ballad,
  742. 37:30and it's gonna be It's gonna f**king blow everyone away"
  743. 37:34And it just wouldn't come to me though
  744. 37:38You know, telling Convincing yourself
  745. 37:41that you can do anything-
  746. 37:43And that you're gonna prove someone wrong is one thing,
  747. 37:46but it actually happening is, is another, right?
  748. 37:50So the song didn't come to me,
  749. 37:52and then I was eating jokbal one day,
  750. 37:54and then it came
  751. 37:55Oh Right? I think karma
  752. 37:58karma wa- it was there when this guy was kind of, you know, putting me down,
  753. 38:03and karma was like, "Okay, I'm gonna
  754. 38:05I'm gonna hook this kid up
  755. 38:06with something some- sometime, sometime soon" Right?
  756. 38:10And then on a rainy day while I was eating jokbal,
  757. 38:12karma gave me inspiration
  758. 38:15So I made Umbrella
  759. 38:16Umbrella came out,
  760. 38:17and here's the crazy thing
  761. 38:19The legends that he name-dropped,
  762. 38:22they heard Umbrella
  763. 38:24and asked me to write songs for them
  764. 38:27So I did
  765. 38:29and the person I mentioned let's not discuss,
  766. 38:33like, where he is in life
  767. 38:37Please don't make guesses in the comments
  768. 38:39Like, that's not the intention of this
  769. 38:41What I'm trying to say is sometimes people will,
  770. 38:45underestimate you
  771. 38:47or go out of their way to put you down, right?
  772. 38:50To, like, keep you down
  773. 38:52sometimes you gotta use that as fuel,
  774. 38:56and that's sometimes the best inspiration
  775. 39:00And if it allows you to move up a notch,
  776. 39:03because I proved to myself That I, I could write songs like Umbrella
  777. 39:08After that, I wrote many ballads, right?
  778. 39:11Like Happy Ending I wrote Love Story
  779. 39:13You know, all those songs wouldn't have happened
  780. 39:16if it wasn't this guy putting me down
  781. 39:18So in a way, I'm very grateful to him
  782. 39:21I know that wasn't,
  783. 39:22like, the I know it wasn't, like, a benevolent intention,
  784. 39:26what he did,
  785. 39:27but, you know, we were all young
  786. 39:30sometimes people do that
  787. 39:31And in a way I am grateful that,
  788. 39:35that he did that because it,
  789. 39:36it really did encourage me to try new things
  790. 39:40So that's why Umbrella is important to me
  791. 39:45not just because it's a big song
  792. 39:47Rosemary: It amazes me that you,
  793. 39:49Rosemary: you just casually say
  794. 39:51Rosemary: that it just came to you
  795. 39:53Rosemary: It's like... 🤯
  796. 39:55but I can't describe Umbrella in any other way
  797. 39:58because as I was eating jokbal- It,
  798. 40:01it, it, this doesn't happen all the time, right?
  799. 40:04Sometimes I'll just have a melody
  800. 40:05or sometimes I'll have, like, a piece of,
  801. 40:07you know, some lyrics or,
  802. 40:10or an idea for a beat But
  803. 40:12the way I heard it, it was
  804. 40:14어느새 빗물이~ 내 발목에 고이고~
  805. 40:19참았던 눈물이 내 눈가에 고이고
  806. 40:22I cry
  807. 40:23just all together
  808. 40:26I was like, "Oh, this would be a great song"
  809. 40:28And then I- You know, made the rest of the song
  810. 40:31So it's happened a few times, I think
  811. 40:35I think it happened once with
  812. 40:37Happy Ending I heard the melody
  813. 40:40and the lyrics at the same time
  814. 40:42Of course there was someone who worked with me on the beat,
  815. 40:45so, like, the beat was there,
  816. 40:47but I heard, like, the, the lyrics and the melody at,
  817. 40:50like, all at the same time
  818. 40:51but it's, like, maybe once,
  819. 40:53maybe once every four or five years
  820. 40:57It doesn't ha- happen often
  821. 40:59Um the next song
  822. 41:02is Epik High's
  823. 41:02"Don't Hate Me."
  824. 41:04As I was saying,
  825. 41:05I'm not picking the best, like,
  826. 41:08the definitive top 10 Epik High songs ever
  827. 41:12I'm picking top 10 songs based on, if they have a awesome backstory
  828. 41:18or they proved someone wrong
  829. 41:20When Don't Hate Me came out,
  830. 41:21you know, I've talked about this multiple times And I think some of our fans are probably sick of it now
  831. 41:28because, like, they don't like me, like, bringing it up and reminding them
  832. 41:34But you have no idea what I went through emotionally
  833. 41:38when this song came out Okay
  834. 41:41This song came out and,
  835. 41:43okay, y- you might not believe me right now
  836. 41:48because it's now, like, a loved song
  837. 41:51and it's, it's like Epik High's encore song
  838. 41:54Like- We go on any festival stage, we perform this song,
  839. 41:57and it just, it just goes nuts, right?
  840. 42:00People love this song now
  841. 42:01But when this song came out,
  842. 42:03you will not believe how much hate I personally got for writing this song and forcing,
  843. 42:13and forcing Epik High to to sing it
  844. 42:17Casual fans were like Okay, they went to YG
  845. 42:21and they're like doing some weird, like, you know, poppy, happy s**t
  846. 42:28Our core fans were like,
  847. 42:30a- and I kid you not, this was, this wasn't just, like, a couple comments
  848. 42:36Every music site in the comment section, in our fan communities,
  849. 42:42you know, when you drop a new song
  850. 42:45I don't wanna see comments,
  851. 42:47but when you drop a song
  852. 42:49like you wanna see if your fans love it
  853. 42:52Like you, you want to see them enjoy it,
  854. 42:54and I thought they would, right?
  855. 42:57So I wanted to see how much they loved it, right?
  856. 43:00So I go in and it was like,
  857. 43:03it was like unbelievable Like, "Tablo, you f**king destroyed Epik High
  858. 43:07Tablo, you f**king, you know, die"
  859. 43:10It was Like, I was like over a song
  860. 43:12I was like What's going on here?
  861. 43:14Like, 'cause anyways,
  862. 43:17like, ugh, it was, it was crazy
  863. 43:20Even our core fans were absolutely pissed off that I dropped this song
  864. 43:26And there are certain people now that are like, "Oh, I loved it since day one
  865. 43:31" Come on
  866. 43:34I'm grateful that you love it now, but at the time,
  867. 43:39there wasn't a single good comment Like seriously
  868. 43:43And, um,
  869. 43:44the reason why it broke me, I, you know, I've,
  870. 43:48I've dropped things where,
  871. 43:50you know, people didn't like it
  872. 43:51You know, almost all our big hit songs when it first dropped,
  873. 43:56like the, it would- divided people
  874. 43:58But, the reason why this song broke me was,
  875. 44:01I started writing this song like,
  876. 44:04like like a day or two after my dad died
  877. 44:08And, um
  878. 44:10The reason why the song is so seemingly happy is because I,
  879. 44:20I c- couldn't,
  880. 44:22I couldn't write songs like,
  881. 44:25y- you know, I did on Fever's End
  882. 44:27because I was going through something Like,
  883. 44:31I just didn't want to like...
  884. 44:34I just didn't wanna go there You know?
  885. 44:37Like, I was, I was trying my best not to accept reality
  886. 44:42And, so I wrote a song that was deliberately happy
  887. 44:46and, like, full of energy and,
  888. 44:48like, positivity because I, I needed,
  889. 44:52I needed to like get away from m-my reality right
  890. 44:58And as I was writing it,
  891. 45:00I was like, "You know, this song might do that for other people, too"
  892. 45:05So, like, I think people are gonna like it,
  893. 45:08although it's like, it's, it's kinda different from what, what we normally do
  894. 45:12and then, so I had it like you know, that's what I hoped,
  895. 45:16and then the song came out,
  896. 45:17and instead of like what I hoped
  897. 45:21people were like you know like angry
  898. 45:25So I was like
  899. 45:27This was the first time that after I dropped a song
  900. 45:30and I saw like the feedback
  901. 45:32like I went into my room and didn't come out for like three days
  902. 45:37Like I just, I just Because I think,
  903. 45:39I think reality kinda hit
  904. 45:41Like my, my actual reality hit at that moment
  905. 45:44I was like, "Oh f**k"
  906. 45:46And I, and then I bel- I believed the comments
  907. 45:49Like I, I,
  908. 45:51I couldn't come out of my room and I, and,
  909. 45:53and like I was thinking to myself like I,
  910. 45:56I, I ruined Epik High
  911. 45:58This was our comeback after years
  912. 46:00and I was like I've t- completely destroyed Epik High
  913. 46:03and, like, my, my dongsaengs were, like, counting on me and,
  914. 46:08and it, it wasn't even, like, a collective decision
  915. 46:11Like, they went with what I, what I made and it, it completely
  916. 46:16So it's like the opposite of the, the Peace Day story, right?
  917. 46:20That's what I thought
  918. 46:21And I had, again,
  919. 46:24Inkigayo waiting
  920. 46:26So we had to go on Inkigayo
  921. 46:27and I knew that, like, I would have to go on stage
  922. 46:30and smile through this song, right?
  923. 46:32But here's what happened
  924. 46:33So I'm very strong, but that, for some reason at that time I wasn't, right?
  925. 46:38And I was really scared to perform this on TV
  926. 46:42because I just, I just knew people Like,
  927. 46:44if you know s- people hate something you made,
  928. 46:48but you gotta do it in front of them, and
  929. 46:51and you
  930. 46:53It's just
  931. 46:53And I can't say no at this point
  932. 46:56because, like, you know, we're already booked
  933. 46:58So I'm like
  934. 46:59I'm just dreading Sunday right
  935. 47:03I get there um... and...
  936. 47:07Psy actually called me
  937. 47:10he was in the States
  938. 47:12because Gangnam Style was, you know, what it was, right?
  939. 47:16So he was in the States, like, doing his thing, and he called me
  940. 47:19and he's like I guess he saw the feedback as well, right?
  941. 47:23And he, he called me and he was like,
  942. 47:25"You're doing your first, live show, right?"
  943. 47:27And I was like, "Yeah"
  944. 47:28And he's like, "You know everyone that hates it now
  945. 47:35will be jumping and singing along to it when it becomes your encore song"
  946. 47:39He literally said that And I was like,
  947. 47:44"Hyung, why would it ever become that?
  948. 47:46'Cause, like, people hate it
  949. 47:48People hate me
  950. 47:49And the song's c- called Don't Hate Me, right?
  951. 47:52And he's like, "Dude, this song is amazing,
  952. 47:56and it'll take time, but it'll I swear
  953. 47:59it'll become your biggest song
  954. 48:01when you do it at concerts," right?
  955. 48:03And I was, I was like, "Thank you, Hyung"
  956. 48:04And then I hung up
  957. 48:05And I, and then I was like, I was still, like, down in the dumps,
  958. 48:08but we went on stage
  959. 48:10We, you know, we shot the thing,
  960. 48:12and as we were performing
  961. 48:14I was like, "You know, I-" It, this song is strangely,
  962. 48:18I, it makes me feel happy to sing it
  963. 48:23Like, I was actually enjoying performing this
  964. 48:27Although I, I, in my mind I'm like,
  965. 48:29"Everyone's gonna see this and, like, our, our fans are gonna hate us even more"
  966. 48:33But I was, like, at the end of the song
  967. 48:35I was actually smiling
  968. 48:36I was faking at first,
  969. 48:38but by the end of the song I was actually enjoying it, right?
  970. 48:41And I was like, "Hey, f- "f**k this," right?
  971. 48:45"f**k it I'm just gonna- I'm gonna just,
  972. 48:46like, have fun"
  973. 48:48And then we did,
  974. 48:49and then strangely enough, like, eventually, like, we would go to, like, a festival or, like, something,
  975. 48:56and sometimes At,
  976. 48:57at first we didn't perform this song on purpose, right?
  977. 49:00Because I was convinced people hated it but
  978. 49:04at this one, one festival,
  979. 49:06we performed it at the end, and it,
  980. 49:09like, it went- Absolutely bonkers
  981. 49:12Like, everybody was like, "Hey, man, I,
  982. 49:15I, Like, I was like, "What, what's going on here?" Right?
  983. 49:18And then it, we performed that at every show,
  984. 49:22and it became one of our,
  985. 49:24you know, like mainstays, like our, our,
  986. 49:27like show ma- mainstays
  987. 49:30and became one of our more,
  988. 49:32most loved songs
  989. 49:35And I think in here there's a lesson for, any creative or,
  990. 49:40even if you're not an artist if you're someone that's trying new things
  991. 49:45and you're listening right now, you're gonna,
  992. 49:50you're gonna run into situations where you, you do something with, with pure love and, good intention and passion
  993. 50:00and p- people, people hate it
  994. 50:05It's gonna happen
  995. 50:06Even someone as strong as me,
  996. 50:08I'm emotionally very strong,
  997. 50:10but because I was going through something in, in my life,
  998. 50:14I let it crush me once
  999. 50:16Like, I really believed the negativity
1000. 50:19There was a lot of it, to be fair,
  1001. 50:21but I believed it
  1002. 50:23And what I'm trying to say
1003. 50:25is, sometimes you gotta just let time do its thing
1004. 50:31Time determines what is, what is beautiful or worthwhile sometimes
1005. 50:36There are tons of movies that people absolutely hated when it first came out
  1006. 50:44Th- there's a movie called Fight Club,
  1007. 50:46which is a huge cult classic,
1008. 50:49and there's this there was this famous story where, Fight Club played at Cannes
1009. 50:53It w- it screened at Cannes Film Festival, right?
1010. 50:57And apparently during the movie,
  1011. 50:59everyone walked out
1012. 51:00People were booing And like, they were like,
1013. 51:03"This is f**king Like, this, this shouldn't even exist" Right?
1014. 51:07And when that happened, apparently Brad Pitt turned to Edward Norton
1015. 51:12and said, "This is gonna be the best film I've ever been in"
1016. 51:17He said this as this was happening, right?
1017. 51:22"This is gonna be the greatest film,
  1018. 51:23like, like, that I,
1019. 51:26I will ever make in my, in my career" Right?
  1020. 51:29And, um,
  1021. 51:30it-
1022. 51:30it became one of his iconic films
  1023. 51:33And sometimes you just,
  1024. 51:34you just don't know
1025. 51:36So like try new things,
1026. 51:38and if people hate you,
  1027. 51:40they don't actually hate you
1028. 51:43So don't let it get to you,
1029. 51:44and just let time do its thing
1030. 51:46And, you know, time, time determines what is, what is a classic and what is not
1031. 51:51While on the topic of don't hate me,
1032. 51:53I'm also gonna include Born Hater
  1033. 51:56because here's the funny thing
1034. 51:58Not only is it a f**king banger and, one of our best songs,
1035. 52:04it was the album after Don't Hate Me
  1036. 52:07And I think... I think if,
1037. 52:09if Don't Ha- that Don't Hate Me situation that I just mentioned,
1038. 52:13like people hating that album, didn't happen,
  1039. 52:17I don't think I would've made the Shoebox album
1040. 52:20Like Born Hater, Happy Ending, all these songs
  1041. 52:25were kind of my f**k you
1042. 52:28to everyone that was like, Epik High's over
1043. 52:32and Tablo basically ended Epik High with the, with that previous album
1044. 52:35I was like Because at that time people were like, "Oh, f**king Can,
1045. 52:40can, can you guys stick to making your, like, sad songs?
1046. 52:44Why are you making f**king, like, poppy, happy s**t? We want some,
1047. 52:49like, sad Epik High songs"
1048. 52:51And I was like, "You want sad?"
  1049. 52:52You want f**king sad? Here's Happy Ending
  1050. 52:56Here's f**king Spoiler
  1051. 52:57Here's Amor Fati
  1052. 53:01But also, like, inside me there's a, you know, there's like a, "f**k you all," right?
1053. 53:06So I was like, when, when Tukutz made the Born Hater beat,
1054. 53:09I was like, "Yo, this is gonna be Born Hater
1055. 53:12Just watch me go off on this s**t" And, um
1056. 53:15I think Born Hater was on this album because of what
1057. 53:18So again I'm grateful for everyone that shit on me
  1058. 53:24Sometimes you just need,
1059. 53:26you need some negativity sometimes
  1060. 53:28to really,
1061. 53:30to really bring out the best in you
1062. 53:34But I've had enough negativity in my life
  1063. 53:38I don't need it anymore
1064. 53:39I'm able to pull inspiration out of what I got now
  1065. 53:41Enough, I have enough here Okay?
1066. 53:44I have enough pain already in here, okay?
  1067. 53:47Like, you don't,
1068. 53:48you don't need to create any more negativity for me
1069. 53:51Don't, don't, please don't think that this is an episode about, like, oh, so Tablo wants us to,
1070. 53:56like, s**t on him so he makes good stuff
  1071. 53:59No, no, no, no
1072. 54:00I have enough pain here now
1073. 54:02that I can just draw it out when I want
  1074. 54:04Okay, so please just don't
1075. 54:07The next song is Epik High Trot
1076. 54:10Here's why this song is going on
1077. 54:13Hey, and if you, if you've noticed- Today
  1078. 54:17is a very good balance
1079. 54:18between songs where, like, I produced the beats
1080. 54:22and songs where Tukutz produced the beats Okay?
1081. 54:26This is going out to all you Tukutz fans out there that,
1082. 54:29that were pissed off during our Wikipedia episode, okay?
  1083. 54:36I give him props
1084. 54:39Do you see him doing a podcast talking about me?
1085. 54:46Do you see him somewhere name-dropping me
1086. 54:50and talking about the things I've done?
  1087. 54:53Like good things I've done?
1088. 54:55Okay, so this trot song has to go on this list
  1089. 54:59because, here's the backstory
1090. 55:01It started off as us making kind of, like, Mithra and I making fun of Tukutz
1091. 55:08So Tukutz- So we were m- working on our sixth album And,
1092. 55:13we wanted it to be a double album,
1093. 55:15so we needed a lot of songs, right?
1094. 55:17I came in with a ton of beats
  1095. 55:20so songs like, Excuses
1096. 55:24there were songs like Slow Motion
1097. 55:26so I came in with, with like a bunch of beats
1098. 55:29He came with a bunch of beats,
1099. 55:31and we're like playing all of them in the studio
1100. 55:33and trying to decide what songs will go on the album
1101. 55:37And, he was like- Oh,
  1102. 55:40there's this, oh, this beat I don't know
1103. 55:42And he's trying to skip one of the tracks
1104. 55:44And I was like, "No, no, play it"
1105. 55:46And he's like, "No, no, no, this is like,
1106. 55:48like this is weird" And I was like,
  1107. 55:50"Just play it
  1108. 55:51I'll, I'll tell you if it's weird, right?"
1109. 55:54And he's like, "No, but it's like f**king It sounds like, ah"
1110. 55:57And he plays it, right?
1111. 55:59And it was the beat for Trot
1112. 56:02And, when, when he played it,
1113. 56:04it wasn't as complete as The, the final song, but, like, he played,
  1114. 56:10like, a sketch of the beat,
1115. 56:11and our engineer hyung, engineer was like, "What the f**k?
1116. 56:16This sounds like some trot s**t" Right?
1117. 56:21And then he was making fun of him, right?
1118. 56:23And it w- at that stage, it was pretty terrible, right?
  1119. 56:26And Tukutz was like,
  1120. 56:27"I f**king said I didn't wanna play it"
1121. 56:30And Mithra was like, "Oh, my, this is terrible"
1122. 56:32And I was like, "Wait, wait, wait a minute"
1123. 56:36If it's terrible because it sounds like a trot song,
  1124. 56:41why don't we call it trot
1125. 56:42and turn it into, like, call it trot and ca- turn it into a,
  1126. 56:47a song about trot?
1127. 56:49Remember how your dad last time was drunk
1128. 56:52and he told Like, I told Tukutz,
1129. 56:53I was like, "Your dad once told me,
  1130. 56:56"야 이 ㅅㅋ야 트로트랑 힙합을 합쳐봐”
  1131. 57:00remember that?
1132. 57:01We can do that now
1133. 57:03And I was like Do this, do this,
1134. 57:05and then the beat, beat can become what it,
1135. 57:08what it needs to be
1136. 57:08And then Tookas edited and,
1137. 57:10I was like, "Yo, just go in there and make a trot melody
1138. 57:14Let's just f**king go all the way with this"
1139. 57:17And so we turned an insult into, like a classic
1140. 57:25Don't get offended too easily
1141. 57:27If you wanna be an artist, I gotta say,
  1142. 57:29like, don't get offended too easily
  1143. 57:32Or get offended
1144. 57:34and immediately turn it into something positive
1145. 57:38And if you've, if you, if you've been, you know, listening to this episode,
1146. 57:42that's the common thread, right?
1147. 57:44Like, terrible s**t happens or like, you know, you get insulted,
  1148. 57:48you get put down,
1149. 57:48but you, but the, the only reason why Epik High can talk about it in a positive way now
1150. 57:55is because we immediately turned it into fuel
1151. 57:58And sometimes, sometimes it's the best fuel Like people
  1152. 58:02saying you're awesome,
  1153. 58:04oh, you're a f**king genius,
  1154. 58:05or oh, you're that, yo, you're,
  1155. 58:07this is like,
  1156. 58:08this is a banger, feels good,
1157. 58:10but doesn't really help you You know?
1158. 58:13Just take everything and turn it into fuel
1159. 58:16Last song is New Beautiful
  1160. 58:19Epik High's New Beautiful,
1161. 58:20which is also like, you know, you can't go to an Epik High concert and not hear this song
1162. 58:25People love this song at our concert
1163. 58:28it was on the album with Don't Hate Me
1164. 58:30So it was actually one of the songs that people hated when it first came out,
1165. 58:35but proved itself to be like
1166. 58:38If we don't have this song, if this song and Don't Hate Me don't exist, like, we don't ha-
1167. 58:42we're not the performance group we are now
  1168. 58:45Seriously
1169. 58:46Like, these two songs made our concerts so much better
1170. 58:50And, um, I just wanna give props to YG for this song
1171. 58:55Do you remember our Epik High episode with Taeyang? And this song came up
1172. 59:01This song was originally called Beautiful Losers
1173. 59:05Even the hook was, "Beautiful loser"
1174. 59:08That was the, that was the hook
1175. 59:10And we recorded the whole thing
1176. 59:13but when we played it for, YG,
1177. 59:18he was like, "It's a good song It's really good, but change it to,
  1178. 59:23Beautiful Winners 'cause I don't,
  1179. 59:26I don't like the word loser"
  1180. 59:28It's such a negative word
  1181. 59:29Like, I don't like it
  1182. 59:30I don't like the word loser
1183. 59:32But here's the thing, like, we had We,
1184. 59:34we were done with the song and loser comes out like, like 50 times
1185. 59:40That's like the hook Beautiful loser, right?
1186. 59:45And I was like, "That" I'm like, "Sir, that, that's the, that's the name of the song, right?"
  1187. 59:52And he's like, "No, I j-"
1188. 59:53He's like, "In my dictionary-"
  1189. 59:56There's no loser
  1190. 59:56Like, I don't like that word
1191. 59:58I don't like you guys even using it It's so negative
1192. 1:00:01Just don't use it And he leaves
  1193. 1:00:03And we're like, "What the f**k?"
1194. 1:00:06We gotta change the whole, we gotta re-record this whole song, right?
1195. 1:00:09So we change it to New Beautiful
1196. 1:00:11And, we took out all the losers from the song, right?
  1197. 1:00:15Even from the raps
  1198. 1:00:16Song comes out and,
1199. 1:00:17and then later I'm at YG Studio
1200. 1:00:20and, I'm, like, working on something else
  1201. 1:00:23But from far away I hear
  1202. 1:00:29and I'm like, "Oh, s**t, BIGBANG's working on something new
  1203. 1:00:32Sounds hella good," right?
  1204. 1:00:33So I run over there, right?
1205. 1:00:35And, GD and, you know, Taeyang and all of them are there,
  1206. 1:00:38and they're like They're, you know,
1207. 1:00:40they just finished a new song, right?
  1208. 1:00:41And it's so good, right?
  1209. 1:00:43And I'm, and I listen to the lyrics,
  1210. 1:00:45and it's like, "Loser"
1211. 1:00:48And I'm like, "Is this song called Loser?"
  1212. 1:00:52And they're like, "Yeah, it's, it's called Loser"
1213. 1:00:54And, you, and our boss was there,
1214. 1:00:59and he was like, "This is it"
  1215. 1:01:01And I was like,
1216. 1:01:03"I thought you hated the word loser"
1217. 1:01:07So I was like, "But I thought you hated the word loser"
1218. 1:01:11And he's like, "If you guys use that word and to describe yourselves, people might believe it"
  1219. 1:01:21But if, if Big Bang does it, it's, it's a different-
1220. 1:01:26And I'm like, "Well, he's not totally wrong" Anyways, I'm, I'm actually real- really glad
1221. 1:01:36that YG gave me that feedback
1222. 1:01:39because it gave us New Beautiful, which is a title that I love more, right?
  1223. 1:01:45Because I do agree, it's, it's, it's much better than Beautiful Losers
1224. 1:01:50And it, it ended up becoming a better song
1225. 1:01:52I changed the melody a little bit, too
1226. 1:01:54And also Big Bang dropped one of my favorite songs that they ever dropped,
1227. 1:02:01whi- which was Loser, right?
  1228. 1:02:02So I'm glad that that happened
1229. 1:02:06To be honest, YG was right
1230. 1:02:11Having the word loser on this song
  1231. 1:02:13would not have worked
  1232. 1:02:15So that's Tablo's top 10 Epik High songs ever
  1233. 1:02:21Bye
  1234. 1:02:22See you next week
