System Crasher - Systemsprenger (2020) Netflix Film Review — Transcript

1. 0:00I was certainly not prepared for system
2. 0:01crasher which is a new German film
3. 0:03available on Netflix a nine-year-old
4. 0:11girl named Benny is looking for love and
5. 0:12acceptance but she pushes away most
6. 0:15everybody with her extreme energy and
7. 0:17behavior this is a heartbreaking film to
8. 0:20watch we find out that Benny has
9. 0:22experienced trauma and probably even
10. 0:24abuse throughout her short life now
11. 0:27we're not shown specifics necessarily
12. 0:29and we're not shown everything that
13. 0:31happens or could have happened but we
14. 0:33are told about one instance and it's
15. 0:35just terrible
16. 0:35Elena's Engel plays Benny and she's got
17. 0:37a tough role because Benny is not a
18. 0:40likable character through most of that
19. 0:42she's prone to just outbursts and
20. 0:44violence now it would be easy to dismiss
21. 0:46this performance as simple because I
22. 0:49mean how hard is it to just scream and
23. 0:51yell but there is a nuance that is
24. 0:53brought to this even while Benny is
25. 0:55screaming like a banshee
26. 0:56there are looks of innocence of
27. 0:59confusion of hurt of longing of wanting
28. 1:02to be loved and accepted and to combine
29. 1:04all of that simultaneously that's rough
30. 1:07and that's hard to do but Zingo pulls
31. 1:10her off really really well
32. 1:12I like the Benny isn't a one-dimensional
33. 1:14character she's very complex I mean I
34. 1:16found myself pissed at her and at the
35. 1:17exact same moment why didn't you just
36. 1:19scoop her up and hug her and tell her
37. 1:22that the world is gonna be okay
38. 1:23this film produces so much anxiety and
39. 1:26tension both from Benny's behaviors and
40. 1:29all of the circumstances and happenings
41. 1:31around her now in this there are very
42. 1:33frenetic shots at times where it's just
43. 1:36extreme up close very flashing and
44. 1:39blurry and we can't really tell what's
45. 1:41going on or what's being seen I mean we
46. 1:43get glimpses here and here and here and
47. 1:44then extremely close and everything but
48. 1:47a lot of those are also occurring in
49. 1:49Benny's dream so it makes sense that it
50. 1:52would be a jumbled mess especially with
51. 1:54somebody who has experienced trauma
52. 1:56there's also times where we're running
53. 1:58behind Benny and it's kind of a shaky
54. 2:01cam but the camera is in step with her
55. 2:04running and so it really feels like
56. 2:06we're running after her that we have
57. 2:08been brought into the film at these
58. 2:09times and it's just it's an insane thing
59. 2:11to watch and it
60. 2:13sucked me in even more there are a
61. 2:15couple of other key performances in this
62. 2:17that are amazing but gut-wrenching also
63. 2:19Benny's mom is played by Lisa hag
64. 2:21Meister and you see and feel her dilemma
65. 2:23and what that really does is bring into
66. 2:26question as you see all of the
67. 2:27circumstances everything that's going on
68. 2:29between the two and you kind of ask
69. 2:31yourself the same question of what what
70. 2:33I do in this situation now I believe
71. 2:35that I would act differently I mean even
72. 2:38though it is an extreme circumstance
73. 2:39that she finds herself in and it can be
74. 2:42terrifying and at points it was brutal
75. 2:44and terrifying and you also figure what
76. 2:47else is in her home life the mom's home
77. 2:49life where she has to protect herself
78. 2:51and her other kids from Benny but it
79. 2:54also comes into question of how much of
80. 2:56this is she causing or allowing as well
81. 2:58then he has a social worker played by
82. 3:00Gabriella
83. 3:01Maria schnide and Wow she has a tough
84. 3:04role also because she is along for this
85. 3:08entire journey that Benny has been going
86. 3:10through she's there the entire time and
87. 3:12at some times she's more of a mom than
88. 3:14ma then Benny's mom is but other times I
89. 3:17mean she has to put her foot down and
90. 3:18she also has to be Benny's advocate and
91. 3:20I just love the Karen concern that she
92. 3:23puts forward in her character and you
93. 3:26get to see utter heartbreak also I'd
94. 3:28venture to say that it could make you
95. 3:30cry in with this one scene because it is
96. 3:33just so terrible of the circumstances
97. 3:37that happen finally there's Mika played
98. 3:39by Albrecht shook so much empathy
99. 3:41sympathy caring and toughness all at
100. 3:45once
101. 3:45it's exactly what Benny needs in this
102. 3:48and there's a moment in the film where
103. 3:50Mika utters the line stay put and it
104. 3:53wrecked me and in context it's a
105. 3:56devastating line now the title of this
106. 3:58system crasher comes from the fact that
107. 4:01Benny is shuffled through the system
108. 4:03that nobody can or wants to take her
109. 4:06because of her extreme behavior her
110. 4:08extreme violence all of her just
111. 4:10outbursts and so she just crashes
112. 4:12through the system leaving this swath of
113. 4:14debris behind her this is a really
114. 4:17interesting character study and it's
115. 4:18tough to watch I mean it is brutal it is
116. 4:20not a happy-go-lucky thing at all and at
117. 4:23times you are on this rollercoaster ride
118. 4:25just like Benny
119. 4:26where we we feel angry at her mostly
120. 4:29when she's being angry or she's having
121. 4:31outbursts we feel compassion when she's
122. 4:33this soft and just she's a nine-year-old
123. 4:35girl I mean he you see that how broken
124. 4:38she is in certain spots and so you want
125. 4:40to reach out you wanna love on her and
126. 4:42then you want to slap or do other things
127. 4:44to the person or people that caused the
128. 4:46trauma in her life it's two hours of
129. 4:49agitation and discomfort and if you're
130. 4:51up for it it is an amazing film to
131. 4:53experience there's no sex nudity a ton
132. 4:57of profanity and a lot of violence I
133. 4:59give system crasher four and a half out
134. 5:02of five couches so do you enjoy
135. 5:04stressful films with one that you really
136. 5:07like that just is anxiety producing let
