4. 0:17homes a few trials with fosters and
5. 0:19intermittent stays with her mother
6. 0:21one by one her violent outbursts and
7. 0:23erratic behavior have led to have' news
8. 0:25clothing off she's running out of
9. 0:27options
10. 0:27enter mica her school escort who takes
11. 0:30it on himself to try and help with
12. 0:32unconventional methods
13. 0:34Nora finish i'ts directorial debut is an
14. 0:37energetic often quite hectic and kinetic
15. 0:40peek into the mind of a troubled kid
16. 0:42loud music and screaming dominate the
17. 0:45soundtrack and bright flashes of pink
18. 0:47denote Benny's loss of control during
19. 0:49these particularly hard to handle
20. 0:51moments it's an effective
21. 0:52impressionistic way of conveying her
22. 0:55trauma the links disparate elements and
23. 0:58kind of moments throughout the film's
24. 1:00cyclical structure where Benny basically
25. 1:02tries a new way of living and then rules
26. 1:04it out again and again over the course
27. 1:06of the runtime the real star here though
28. 1:08is Benny and the young actor portraying
29. 1:10her Helena's Engel she's a great
30. 1:12performer she glowers screams and swears
31. 1:16she picks on a wheelchair user pisses
32. 1:18outside her carers office starts fights
33. 1:21with other kids in a range of
34. 1:23institutional settings she storms into
35. 1:24consultation rooms and immediately spies
36. 1:27out the complimentary lollipops and
37. 1:28boiled sweets just like any normal
38. 1:31nine-year-old word it's a big and
39. 1:33fearless performance that easily matches
40. 1:35the tender and tough adults around her
41. 1:38and the script and Fink shouts direction
42. 1:40gives her the room to do it
43. 1:42which creates this uncompromising worlds
44. 1:45that Benny inhabits and on that note if
45. 1:47my plot description before sounded a bit
46. 1:49fluffier than that like that this would
47. 1:52be some sort of Dead Poets Society thing
48. 1:54where nice ideas save the day then I'm
49. 1:56sorry I feel like I might have misled
50. 1:58you and you should prepare for something
51. 1:59sadder and darker the film is almost
52. 2:02unbearably raw at times and it's honesty
53. 2:05in portraying a little girl who is by
54. 2:07all accounts had a really terrible life
55. 2:09means that it could be very difficult to
56. 2:12watch there's also some uncomfortable
57. 2:13truths there the film shows care workers
58. 2:16who don't care that
59. 2:17others who absolutely do but are
60. 2:19hamstrung by systemic constraints and
61. 2:22issues like that and people whose heroic
62. 2:25efforts to help lead to nothing and then
63. 2:27in the middle of all that there's Benny
64. 2:29who consistently puts herself in worse
65. 2:31and worse situations so much so that it
66. 2:34can be frustrating to watch and kind of
67. 2:36hard to empathize with first sometimes
68. 2:37and in the end the film's greatest
69. 2:40strengths I think is that it's an
70. 2:41exercise in empathy where you can see
71. 2:43the damage that this girl is doing to
72. 2:45herself and to others but also
73. 2:48understand the deep trauma and
74. 2:49motivation behind it system crasher has
75. 2:52been doing great business in Europe off
76. 2:54the back of winning a silver there at
77. 2:56Berlin Al so it's a real shame that it's
78. 2:58gonna miss out on a cinema release in
79. 3:00the UK luckily it is available on
80. 3:01current home cinema and BFI player in
81. 3:03the UK and it's also on Netflix in some
82. 3:06territories as well so definitely seek
83. 3:08it out and give it a watch that's it for
