  4. 0:15because of a threatened indictment for
  5. 0:17example i could not appear at the urban
  6. 0:19committee last year
  7. 0:21i have watched with a very heavy heart
  8. 0:23the country i love being torn apart
  9. 0:26by the most divisive and bitter
  10. 0:27controversy in our nation's history the
  11. 0:30prompt and just resolution of other
  12. 0:32proceedings
  13. 0:33far more important than my trial is
  14. 0:35vital to the democratic process
  15. 0:38i want to be free to contribute
  16. 0:40to that resolution no matter who it may
  17. 0:42help no matter who it may hurt me or
  18. 0:44others
  19. 0:45that at least is the way i see my duty
  20. 0:47that is the dictate of my conscience
  21. 0:51i regret what happened what i attempted
  22. 0:53to do to dr ellsberg
  23. 0:55it is wrong whether it is done to him to
  24. 0:58me or to others
  25. 1:00and not only is it morally right that i
  26. 1:02plead to this charge but i fervently
  27. 1:04hope
  28. 1:05that this case will serve to prevent
  29. 1:06similar abuses in the future
  30. 1:09government officials must know that
  31. 1:10under our system of government every
  32. 1:12individual whether a potential or actual
  33. 1:14criminal defendant
  34. 1:16is entitled to a fair trial and that
  35. 1:18anyone who attempts to interfere with
  36. 1:19that right must pay the consequences
  37. 1:39okay
