- 0:00were any lives put at risk during the
- 0:03war when you were inside MI5 and also
- 0:05working for the
- 0:06Russians but own to me yes I think the
- 0:10answer to that is categorically
- 0:12no what kind of work were you doing for
- 0:14the Russians then inside the Mii um with
- 0:16the information that I passed to them
- 0:19was almost exclusively about German
- 0:22intelligence
- 0:24Services uh and that was largely
- 0:28information which again as I said in um
- 0:31in my statement a lot of people in MI5
- 0:33thought ought to have been given
- 0:36officially uh I had in fact no
- 0:39information about um British none about
- 0:42British agents at all and I wasn't
- 0:44connected with that aspect
- 0:46of with the section of MI5 that would
- 0:49have been connected with that aspect of
- 0:50MI6 at all and I had no information um
- 0:56about military defenses or military um
- 1:00anything to do rarely with with the
- 1:02military side when you made your
- 1:04confession did the queen
- 1:06know well this is a question again which
- 1:09I shall I like I would rather not
- 1:11discuss because my information is so to
- 1:14speak second if not secondhand is rather
- 1:16vague um and I can only say that as far
- 1:20as I was told at the time and later she
- 1:24was not but I I may be wrong about this
- 1:27that was what I was told after 1964 you
- 1:29were still working with and for the
- 1:32royal family how did you reconcile that
- 1:35with the fact that you are a
- 1:37traitor simply um you may say this is
- 1:40schizophrenic um but I felt that I was
- 1:44I'd been given a job to do and I felt I
- 1:47could go on doing it for the raw
- 1:51collection how do you feel about being
- 1:53called a traitor
- 1:55now I can't deny it do you feel like a
- 1:58traitor do you feel you betrayed Britain
- 2:01I feel that I haven't betrayed my
- 2:03conscience what do you mean by that I
- 2:05mean that I originally I I realized I
- 2:09made an appalling mistake but I uh acted
- 2:12according to my conscience in doing this
- 2:14in 19 whenever it was 35
- 2:1736 uh and that meant disloyalty to this
- 2:21country but as I've said it was I
- 2:25believed it was the right thing in the
- 2:26cause of anti-fascism I now realized
- 2:29bitterly
- 2:30uh this was totally wrong so you do have
- 2:33regrets oh yes
- 2:36bitter what will you do
- 2:39now I hope to be able to go back and do
- 2:41some work on art history
