- 0:00Welcome to today's Veriscope where we're
- 0:02looking at the case of Susan Smith and
- 0:05you might not be aware of the case
- 0:07because it was way back in 1994,
- 0:10but Susan Smith has been convicted of
- 0:14the murder of her two children and there
- 0:18was a book
- 0:21written Beyond All Reason.
- 0:24What had happened was she had had an
- 0:28affair
- 0:29and she murdered her two children by
- 0:33allowing the car to
- 0:36roll backwards into water and the two
- 0:40boys drowned. So,
- 0:43here it is look on
- 0:44on
- 0:45Google. Susan Smith is serving a life
- 0:48sentence for drowning her two young
- 0:50sons, Michael 3 and Alexander 14 months
- 0:54in 1994. Now, she's served 30 years and
- 0:58what we're going to do today is going to
- 0:59listen to her appeal on television to
- 1:04try and find the black man who stole her
- 1:08car with the children inside, she
- 1:11claimed. And what we're going to do is
- 1:14statement analysis. So, some of you have
- 1:17been following the Veriscope channel for
- 1:19a while and
- 1:23you'll know how to analyze
- 1:25what she's about to say to us. For those
- 1:28who are new, if this is your first time
- 1:30watching Veriscope, imagine [snorts]
- 1:32that you're part of the FBI behavioral
- 1:35analysis unit and you're watching for
- 1:38the first time, which you might be,
- 1:40the video of mom and dad similar to many
- 1:46other parents like the McCanns for
- 1:48instance,
- 1:49they make an appeal on television and
- 1:52it's your job as the FBI agent in the
- 1:56behavioral analysis unit to determine if
- 1:58you believe her and him or not. And if
- 2:02it's the case that you don't, you'll be
- 2:05able to And don't forget there are two
- 2:06missing children. So, the resources
- 2:09which you employ have to be spent well.
- 2:13So, if you don't suspect the parents,
- 2:15you can put all of the resources
- 2:17elsewhere.
- 2:18Do you suspect the parents? Let's listen
- 2:20to what she has to say. We'll play the
- 2:22whole thing through
- 2:24and then we'll go back and analyze it
- 2:28using forensic linguistics.
- 2:31I might stop the tape every now and
- 2:33again if I can't help myself, but let's
- 2:35see what she has to say first.
- 2:40>> I think everybody knows that they are.
- 2:48I think everyone is aware I think
- 2:50everyone is aware
- 2:53of who these two are.
- 2:56We have a lot of family members here
- 2:58today and a lot of friends who are here
- 3:00in support of Susan and David.
- 3:03I'm going to let them
- 3:05say what they have to say now.
- 3:08>> Uh first of all,
- 3:11I would like to to say to whoever
- 3:14has my children
- 3:17that they please
- 3:19I mean please bring them home
- 3:24to us where they belong.
- 3:28Our lives have been torn apart by this
- 3:31tragic event.
- 3:38I can't express
- 3:41how much they are wanted back home, how
- 3:44much we love them, we miss them.
- 3:49They they they are our hearts.
- 3:55And who I have prayed every day
- 3:59and there's not one minute that goes by
- 4:01that I don't think about these boys.
- 4:06And I have prayed that whoever has them
- 4:10that the Lord let him let him realize
- 4:15that they are missed and loved more than
- 4:17any children in this world.
- 4:21And that
- 4:24whoever has them,
- 4:26I I I pray every day that you're taking
- 4:27care of them.
- 4:30And know that we will do anything,
- 4:32anything we will to help you to get them
- 4:35home back to us.
- 4:38I just can't express it enough that we
- 4:40we just got to get them home. That's
- 4:42just where they belong with their mom
- 4:44and daddy.
- 4:48Go ahead.
- 4:50>> I would like to take the time
- 4:52please
- 4:53to the American public that you please
- 4:57do not give up on these two little boys
- 5:00in the search
- 5:02for their return safe home to us.
- 5:05As you continue to look for this car,
- 5:08these two
- 5:09our children
- 5:11and for the suspect himself that
- 5:13[snorts] you continue to keep your eyes
- 5:14open
- 5:15and anything that you see
- 5:19that might would help please call
- 5:21and let it be known.
- 5:25Uh
- 5:28we ask
- 5:30that you continue
- 5:32pray
- 5:33for me and my wife
- 5:35and for our family.
- 5:36But most of all that you continue to
- 5:38pray the American public continue to
- 5:40pray for Michael and Alex that they are
- 5:43returned home safely
- 5:46to their mother and father
- 5:48and the family members who love them so
- 5:49much
- 5:51that you pray most of all for them and
- 5:53that they are being taken care of and
- 5:55that they are safe
- 5:56and that they will return home safely.
- 6:01>> I want to say to my babies
- 6:05that your mama loves you so much and
- 6:08your daddy and his whole family loves
- 6:09you so much
- 6:13and you guys have got to be strong
- 6:16because you are with with with I just
- 6:19know I just feel in my heart that you're
- 6:21okay but you got to take care of each
- 6:24other.
- 6:27And your mom and dad are going to be
- 6:28right here waiting on you when you get
- 6:29home.
- 6:33I love you so much.
- 6:37I want
- 6:38I want to I want to uh tell a story.
- 6:46The night
- 6:48that this happened
- 6:51before I left my house that night
- 6:59Michael
- 7:00did something that he's never done
- 7:02before.
- 7:09He had his pacifier in his mouth
- 7:12and he came up to me he took his
- 7:14pacifier out.
- 7:19He put his arms around me
- 7:21and he told me I love you so much, Mama.
- 7:27And he
- 7:28he's always told me he loved me but
- 7:30never before but
- 7:33not without me telling him first and
- 7:35that was just
- 7:37I'm holding on to that so much cuz that
- 7:40I did it just means so much.
- 7:49I love them.
- 7:51I just can't express enough. I I have
- 7:53been to the Lord in prayers every day
- 7:56with my family and by myself, with my
- 7:59husband.
- 8:01It just seems so unfair that somebody
- 8:04could take such two beautiful children.
- 8:07And I don't understand.
- 8:12I I have put
- 8:15all my trust and faith in the Lord that
- 8:18he's taking care of them
- 8:20and that he will bring them home to us.
- 8:28>> Hmm.
- 8:29What did you think?
- 8:36>> That's all. I can't I won't say anything
- 8:38else.
- 8:39>> Good luck, y'all.
- 8:40>> Good luck.
- 8:41>> Thank you.
- 8:43>> Now, [snorts] obviously that last
- 8:45statement that she said um
- 8:48more than likely she meant
- 8:51that she prays to the Lord
- 8:53that he's taking care of them
- 8:57meaning the fake kidnapper.
- 9:02But there is no fake kidnapper.
- 9:05And
- 9:09or there is no kidnapper, rather.
- 9:12And so is she praying to God there
- 9:16to take care of them?
- 9:18Let's just listen to that bit again
- 9:19before we go back to the beginning.
- 9:23>> I have put
- 9:25all my trust and faith in the Lord that
- 9:28he's taking care of them
- 9:30and that he will bring them home to us.
- 9:33>> Do you see
- 9:35Do you see the point here?
- 9:39She's putting all of her faith in the
- 9:42Lord
- 9:43that he will keep them safe
- 9:46and he will bring them back to us. But
- 9:49she
- 9:51obviously wants the crowd and you and I
- 9:55to think that she's talking about the
- 9:57kidnapper.
- 9:59But the way that she said it
- 10:03to herself
- 10:05is what she really means. Let's listen
- 10:07one more time.
- 10:12>> So unfair that somebody could take such
- 10:14two beautiful children.
- 10:17And I don't
- 10:18>> And also notice there that she says it's
- 10:20so unfair.
- 10:24So unfair.
- 10:26Now, your children are missing.
- 10:28Would you call it unfair?
- 10:31It's just so unfair.
- 10:34You see
- 10:39that is diminishing
- 10:42the horror.
- 10:46That's in a sense distancing.
- 10:50It's just not fair. Do you see? Do you
- 10:53see how that is not the anguish and the
- 10:56horror?
- 10:59It's unfair if, you know, things don't
- 11:01go your way.
- 11:04But
- 11:05losing your two children isn't unfair.
- 11:09So, she's got that bit wrong.
- 11:12>> I don't understand.
- 11:16I I have put
- 11:19all my trust and faith
- 11:21>> Okay, so she's now switching and
- 11:23bringing in the Lord.
- 11:26Bringing in God.
- 11:28Bringing in the higher power.
- 11:30And
- 11:35that is
- 11:37something which is often done in
- 11:40gaslighting and deception.
- 11:43It's that's I swear to God
- 11:46I swear on my mother's life.
- 11:50>> [laughter]
- 11:52>> Bringing in the deity is um
- 11:57is as well as it's as a stronger call as
- 11:59you can get, isn't it? But here we've
- 12:01got something very different indeed
- 12:04because she's bringing in the call to
- 12:06the deity to herself, but to the
- 12:08audience she wants the audience to think
- 12:11that she does the switcheroo
- 12:14to really she's talking about praying
- 12:16that the kidnapper will return them safe
- 12:18and the kidnapper will look after them.
- 12:20Let's listen.
- 12:21>> in the Lord that he's taking care of
- 12:24them.
- 12:28I I have put
- 12:31all my trust and faith in the Lord that
- 12:33he's taking care of them
- 12:35and that he will bring them home to us.
- 12:37>> Yeah, you see I think that's an error.
- 12:41>> [snorts]
- 12:41>> I think that is an error.
- 12:43And I think she has
- 12:47as far as she can put her faith in God
- 12:51that he or she or it is looking after
- 12:55those two little boys. And that's what I
- 12:57think the error is. So let's go back to
- 12:59the beginning.
- 13:01And this time we'll break it down into
- 13:05areas of deception.
- 13:09Oh, by the way, if you want to know the
- 13:12the latest, so she there was a parole
- 13:15hearing. She served 30 years
- 13:19and there was a a parole hearing and it
- 13:21was denied. And her husband
- 13:24um
- 13:25was there to to um
- 13:28say that he didn't want her released.
- 13:31And as we go through the
- 13:37video again, we'll note how the husband
- 13:43uses the two little boys' names.
- 13:47Whereas she
- 13:49Susan Smith
- 13:50distances in all sorts of ways. Let's
- 13:53break it down.
- 13:58>> I think everyone is aware I think
- 14:00everyone is aware
- 14:01>> So, how would you if you were the FBI
- 14:04agents at the Behavioral Analysis Unit,
- 14:08what would you have done?
- 14:10Would you have believed the parents?
- 14:13Difficult, isn't it? Because
- 14:16he's unaware of what she's done.
- 14:20So, he comes across as truthful. Look,
- 14:22he's protective.
- 14:24He's consoling.
- 14:26He's devastated.
- 14:30He's holding it together, though.
- 14:35>> of
- 14:37of who these two are.
- 14:40We have a lot of family members here
- 14:42today and a lot of friends who are here
- 14:44in support of Susan and David.
- 14:47I'm going to let them
- 14:49say what they have to say now.
- 14:52Uh first of all
- 14:55I would like this to say to whoever
- 14:58has my children
- 15:02that they please
- 15:03I mean, please bring them home.
- 15:06>> Okay.
- 15:07So, she has to emphasize the please.
- 15:12And starts off with
- 15:14what's most important to the person.
- 15:17So, what's most important to the person
- 15:19is establishing that whoever has her
- 15:23children
- 15:28But we haven't [snorts] had any social
- 15:29introduction of the children, have we?
- 15:32None.
- 15:36Let's listen one more time to exactly
- 15:38how she said that.
- 15:43>> David
- 15:45I'm going to let them
- 15:46say what they have to say now.
- 15:49Um first of all
- 15:52I would like to
- 15:53>> And the first of all
- 15:56That's unusual, isn't it? As a start.
- 16:00First of all
- 16:08Hm, does that sit well with you as the
- 16:11opener?
- 16:12First of all
- 16:19>> to say to whoever
- 16:21has my children
- 16:25>> Not our children.
- 16:27My children, which is
- 16:34Okay, I think.
- 16:37under the circumstances
- 16:40But we note that
- 16:43it's my children.
- 16:46And we note that no names have been
- 16:49used. And
- 16:51she's not describing them and what they
- 16:54were wearing.
- 16:56And the vehicle
- 16:59and the number plate
- 17:02Uh
- 17:03she's not doing any of that, is she?
- 17:05So often in forensic linguistics and
- 17:08statement analysis, it's not all And
- 17:11this is something that I haven't
- 17:12introduced very much in other videos.
- 17:14Um but there's over 200 hours of
- 17:17forensic linguistic statement analysis
- 17:19training
- 17:21if if you're interested in learning
- 17:23about how we gaslight and how we lie and
- 17:26how to spot gaslighting and deception in
- 17:30crime, business, relationships,
- 17:34do consider subscribing. If you get some
- 17:36value out of the video at any stage, hit
- 17:39the subscribe button. I'd be very
- 17:40grateful. And
- 17:43you'll you'll see after a dozen or so
- 17:45Veriscope videos, your own skill level
- 17:49absolutely
- 17:50you'll be amazed at that how much you
- 17:53can see in in terms of deception. There
- 17:55is a bit of a Pandora's Box which I
- 17:57would advise you not to open too early
- 18:00and that is looking at your own previous
- 18:02emails
- 18:03and perhaps WhatsApp exchanges. I would
- 18:06wait until your skill level is a little
- 18:08bit more advanced and higher before you
- 18:11start opening Pandora's Box especially
- 18:13on past relationships. Trust Otherwise
- 18:15you'll read into um
- 18:18well
- 18:19I can't tell you what to do, can I? Just
- 18:21but And also who's going to take that
- 18:24advice?
- 18:25>> [laughter]
- 18:27>> As soon as you half know what you're
- 18:28doing, you're looking.
- 18:30I did. Anyway, let's carry on.
- 18:32>> But they please
- 18:34I mean please bring them home.
- 18:38To where they where they belong.
- 18:44Mhm.
- 18:49Our lives have been torn apart by this
- 18:52tragic event.
- 18:54>> Our lives have been torn apart. So we
- 18:57have that that self-centeredness.
- 19:02It's
- 19:04not priority for the children.
- 19:07Whose name she can't use.
- 19:11So it's self-orientated
- 19:17Will we start to see the need to
- 19:19convince? Will we start to see the I'm a
- 19:21good mom,
- 19:23which is what we'll often see in these
- 19:25sorts of cases.
- 19:28She's using the kidnapping ruse,
- 19:31very common in cases uh like this, isn't
- 19:36it? With the parents,
- 19:38>> [snorts]
- 19:38>> they come up with a kidnapping ruse.
- 19:42Nearly all of them, don't they?
- 19:48>> Okay.
- 19:51I can't express
- 19:54how much they are wanting back home, how
- 19:57much we love them.
- 19:59>> Okay, so this is the need to convince.
- 20:04This is a is meant to be
- 20:07a desperately hurt, in anguish,
- 20:11traumatized, [snorts]
- 20:12in terror mother whose children are
- 20:15missing, and she says a black man stole
- 20:19the car with the children inside.
- 20:26But,
- 20:28she's not showing any of that to me. Is
- 20:31she to you? Would you have believed her?
- 20:39Look,
- 20:41she strapped her sons into the car
- 20:43seats,
- 20:44and she rolled her car into the lake
- 20:49in South Carolina.
- 20:58For 9 days, she claimed a black man had
- 21:01carjacked her and kidnapped the boys,
- 21:05sparking a massive nationwide search and
- 21:08lots of emotional televised pleas. There
- 21:11was a part which perhaps we'll play
- 21:13later if I can find the tape where she
- 21:15uses the past tense and she says
- 21:18something along the lines of my boys
- 21:21needed me.
- 21:23This is before they were found.
- 21:25So she used the past tense. Isn't that
- 21:28very common, isn't it?
- 21:30They get the tenses wrong.
- 21:33Or the pronouns incorrect very often.
- 21:35Or the pronouns dropped.
- 21:39And then there was the motive.
- 21:40Prosecutors revealed that Smith was in a
- 21:43relationship with a wealthy man.
- 21:47Tom Findley
- 21:50who had recently ended the affair
- 21:53because he did not want children.
- 21:57Oh dear.
- 22:01So she murdered them
- 22:04out of that selfish interest.
- 22:12And there was a 12-day trial. Perhaps
- 22:14we'll see if we can find some of the
- 22:16trial
- 22:17if it was televised, I don't know.
- 22:21But anyway, she had she had a parole
- 22:24hearing and David who we saw there
- 22:26consoling her
- 22:28um
- 22:30expressed his opposition.
- 22:32So let's go back to the actual tape
- 22:35itself.
- 22:36>> I miss them.
- 22:39They They They are our hearts.
- 22:45And who I have prayed every day.
- 22:50And there's not one minute that goes by
- 22:52that I don't think about these boys.
- 22:55>> So she's convincing us, isn't she? She's
- 22:58spending all of this television time
- 23:01convincing us how much she prays, how
- 23:05much she loves them, how much she wants
- 23:07them back. This is the need to convince.
- 23:11And no time on the children,
- 23:14who they are, what they look like, what
- 23:17they're wearing,
- 23:19her car, the nothing.
- 23:22This is just a self-centered speech.
- 23:29You'll see similarities with other
- 23:30parents who have kidnapping ruses.
- 23:37>> And I have prayed that whoever has them
- 23:41that the Lord would let them and let him
- 23:43realize
- 23:45>> Ah, did you catch it?
- 23:48Did you hear that?
- 23:51We had a pronoun error.
- 23:53Let's listen again. Listen very
- 23:55carefully because at conversational
- 23:57speed they're easy to miss.
- 24:01Let's listen again.
- 24:07>> And I have prayed that whoever has them
- 24:11that the Lord would let them and let him
- 24:13realize
- 24:47that they are missed and
- 24:52>> Let them let him realize.
- 24:57I don't understand.
- 24:59Let Let's play that one more time.
- 25:01>> today.
- 25:02And there's not one minute that goes by
- 25:04that I don't think about these boys.
- 25:09And I have prayed that whoever has them
- 25:13that the Lord would let them let him
- 25:15realize
- 25:19>> Well, she's going to say let them
- 25:21realize
- 25:22whoever has them let them realize.
- 25:28Hm.
- 25:30There's a pronoun error here.
- 25:33If I If I had more time, I'd sit with
- 25:36this for ages.
- 25:39She switches them to him.
- 25:42What's she going Did she mean
- 25:44these people as a couple because she
- 25:46knows nobody really has
- 25:49them
- 25:50the two boys.
- 25:52But she said let them let him.
- 25:58>> [snorts]
- 25:58>> Hm.
- 26:00>> But they are missed and loved more than
- 26:02any children in this world.
- 26:06And that
- 26:08whoever has them
- 26:10I I I pray every day that you're taking
- 26:12care of them.
- 26:14And know that we will do anything
- 26:17anything we will to help you to get them
- 26:20home back.
- 26:22>> Hm.
- 26:24We will do anything to help you.
- 26:31>> The words I
- 26:33I just can't express it enough that we
- 26:35we just got to get them home. That's
- 26:37just where they belong with their mom.
- 26:40>> We just got to get them home.
- 26:43>> When daddy
- 26:46>> What?
- 26:47>> I'll go ahead.
- 26:49>> I'd would to take the time
- 26:51please
- 26:52to the American public that you please
- 26:56do not give up on these two little boys
- 27:00in the search
- 27:02for their return safe home to us.
- 27:04That you continue to look for this car
- 27:07these two
- 27:08our children
- 27:10and for the suspect himself that you
- 27:12continue to keep your eyes open
- 27:15and anything that you see
- 27:18that might would help to please call
- 27:21and let it be known.
- 27:24Uh
- 27:27We ask
- 27:29that you continue
- 27:31pray
- 27:32for me and my wife
- 27:34and for our family.
- 27:36But most of all that you continue to
- 27:38pray the American public continue to
- 27:40pray for Michael and Alex.
- 27:43>> Okay.
- 27:45He let out that deep breath and then
- 27:48he became himself rather than the
- 27:50prepared speech to the to a degree.
- 27:52And when And as soon as he does that,
- 27:54what's important? The family.
- 27:57And he names the two boys.
- 28:06His
- 28:07speech was orientated towards finding
- 28:11them, the car.
- 28:15>> They are returned home safely
- 28:18to their mother and father
- 28:20and the family members who love them so
- 28:22much.
- 28:23That you pray most of all for them and
- 28:25that they are being taken care of and
- 28:27that they are safe
- 28:29and that they will return home safely.
- 28:35>> Mhm.
- 28:36>> [clears throat]
- 28:36>> And
- 28:37he's
- 28:41convincing himself that they will.
- 28:48He has no idea that this woman has had
- 28:51an affair
- 28:55and has murdered their two children
- 28:59because she believes that's how she'll
- 29:01get back with the man.
- 29:05>> I want to say to my babies
- 29:09>> Okay, so the children are not named
- 29:11still.
- 29:13And she wants to say
- 29:16and before she would say
- 29:18So we have a slight change of language.
- 29:21>> that your mama loves you so much and
- 29:24your daddy this whole family loves you
- 29:26so much.
- 29:28>> What did you think of the cry?
- 29:32Just listen again.
- 29:35>> I want to say to my babies
- 29:39that your mama loves you so much and
- 29:41your daddy this whole family loves you
- 29:43so much.
- 29:46And you guys have got to be strong
- 29:50because you are Wait, what do you I just
- 29:52know I just feel in my heart that you're
- 29:55okay, but you got to
- 29:58>> Yeah, very often they'll say I know
- 30:01she's out there somewhere
- 30:03or I feel in my heart.
- 30:06There's this um
- 30:12strange
- 30:20obituary type of language which occurs.
- 30:27I know she's out there is very common,
- 30:29isn't it?
- 30:31Or I know he's out there. That that type
- 30:33of language.
- 30:36I feel it in my heart.
- 30:40>> Take care of each other.
- 30:43And your mom and dad are going to be
- 30:45right here waiting on you when you get
- 30:46home.
- 30:50I love you so much.
- 30:53I want
- 30:55I want to I want to uh uh tell a story.
- 30:59>> Yeah, you see that's just so wrong,
- 31:01isn't it?
- 31:03She stuttered. She stumbled.
- 31:06And and she changed pitch and tone.
- 31:11And she wants to tell a story.
- 31:18The need to further convince the
- 31:21audience what a good mom she is and how
- 31:24much she loves and how much she loves
- 31:26them
- 31:27and how much she wants them back whilst
- 31:30doing very little to actually
- 31:33help.
- 31:36It's all about
- 31:38I love them and I want them back.
- 31:41I really do.
- 31:47It's the need to convince.
- 31:50She's not conveying, is she?
- 31:59>> The night
- 32:00that this happened
- 32:05>> Okay.
- 32:08The night that this happened.
- 32:13Let's keep that in mind.
- 32:14>> before I left my house that night
- 32:19>> Before I left.
- 32:23Now, remember, she has free speech. She
- 32:26has free will.
- 32:30And she decides to say before I left
- 32:33that night.
- 32:36So, she's used
- 32:38and she's used that.
- 32:41And she's used left. Let's listen again.
- 32:47>> The night
- 32:49that this happened
- 32:52before I left my house that night
- 33:00Michael
- 33:02did something that he's never done
- 33:03before.
- 33:11He had his poop right in his mouth.
- 33:13And he came up to me and he took his
- 33:15poop out.
- 33:20He put his arms around me.
- 33:22And he told me, "I love you so much,
- 33:24Mama."
- 33:28And he
- 33:29he's always told me love me, but never
- 33:31be-
- 33:32>> Okay.
- 33:34So, she wants to tell us this story
- 33:39about how much
- 33:44she loves the children
- 33:46and the child loves her.
- 33:49And that the child
- 33:51has
- 33:52And then she she sort of contradicts
- 33:55herself.
- 33:57And that the child has always said that
- 33:59she
- 34:00he he
- 34:01Hmm, do you see? It's all about
- 34:03portraying I'm a good mom.
- 34:06It's that it's it's the continuation of
- 34:09the need to convince.
- 34:11>> before that
- 34:14>> Let's one more time.
- 34:15>> that poop right in his
- 34:20He put his arms around me.
- 34:22And he told me, "I love you so much,
- 34:24Mama."
- 34:28And he
- 34:29he's always told me love me, but never
- 34:31before that
- 34:34with
- 34:36>> And he's always told me but never
- 34:38before. So, it's it's confusing, isn't
- 34:41it? And don't forget deception
- 34:45loves confusion. It's where it lives
- 34:48predominantly.
- 34:51When it's confusing,
- 34:54more often than not, there's deception.
- 34:58It's not because you're confused.
- 35:01And sometimes it's not because they're
- 35:03confused.
- 35:05It's the language of deception. So, um
- 35:08for years I would get confused. I I I it
- 35:12didn't feel right. My gut was on alarm.
- 35:17And and I put it down to me not quite
- 35:19understanding perhaps.
- 35:23But it was deception.
- 35:27It's not you.
- 35:29It's me, not you.
- 35:32>> [laughter]
- 35:34>> So, bear in mind when you when you hear
- 35:36this confusion
- 35:38or this
- 35:40uh contradiction
- 35:42and this strange language pattern, it's
- 35:45normally because there is deception in
- 35:47there.
- 35:49Let's listen to it one more time. He
- 35:50loved me before.
- 35:50>> Look.
- 35:52>> And he
- 35:54he's always told me he loved me but
- 35:55never before, but
- 35:59not without me telling him first. And
- 36:01that was just
- 36:02I'm holding on to that so much cuz
- 36:06I did it just means so much.
- 36:14I love them. I I
- 36:16I just can't express enough. I I have
- 36:18been to the Lord in prayers every day
- 36:21with my family and
- 36:23>> Okay, so she's really going to town here
- 36:26convincing us all that she does love
- 36:29them
- 36:30and that she does pray every day and
- 36:32that she is a good mom.
- 36:34But very little, she still hasn't
- 36:37mentioned their name. Have you noticed
- 36:38that with all of these
- 36:41murderers?
- 36:43They cannot mention the children's name
- 36:45very often.
- 36:46Sometimes not at all.
- 36:48Extreme distancing.
- 36:51But notice dad did.
- 36:55David did.
- 36:59>> and by myself with my husband.
- 37:03It just seems so unfair that somebody
- 37:05could take such
- 37:07>> And here we are. Look, we're back to
- 37:08where we started and she says it seems
- 37:11It seems Oh, I did I missed that. It
- 37:14seems so unfair. Let's listen one more
- 37:16time.
- 37:20>> every day with my family and by myself
- 37:24with my husband.
- 37:27It just seems so unfair that somebody
- 37:29could
- 37:29>> Wow.
- 37:31It just seems so unfair. So I So do
- 37:36excuse me, but um I I only caught the
- 37:39Well, I must have heard it, but I I I
- 37:41missed its meaning. Um so it just seems
- 37:46so unfair.
- 37:48Seems.
- 37:50Let's listen one more time. This is
- 37:52important.
- 37:57>> to the Lord in prayers every day with my
- 38:00family and by myself with my husband.
- 38:05It just seems so unfair that
- 38:07>> It just seems
- 38:09so unfair.
- 38:12So it's not even unfair. It just seems
- 38:15that way. It's even worse than I
- 38:17thought.
- 38:21It only seems unfair. You see, it's
- 38:24unfair doesn't sit right because losing
- 38:27your children is more than unfair. And
- 38:29that's is min you know, that's as
- 38:31minimizing as you can get.
- 38:33But she's gone a step further.
- 38:36And she said it just seems unfair. It's
- 38:38not even unfair, just seems that way.
- 38:41That's even worse minimization.
- 38:45So, if you were
- 38:48in the FBI behavioral analysis unit and
- 38:50you were the agent reviewing this tape,
- 38:54you would be very concerned and your
- 38:56feedback to the law enforcement officers
- 39:00who are investigating
- 39:02would be
- 39:06we believe the husband is unaware
- 39:09of what
- 39:10Susan Smith knows and that she has uh
- 39:14signs of deception to the degree that it
- 39:17is worthwhile
- 39:18spending resources investigating her.
- 39:24And of course then they might find the
- 39:26affair, the rich man,
- 39:30he ended their affair,
- 39:32etc.
- 39:33More quickly than they would have done
- 39:35had they been off on a wild goose chase
- 39:37looking for some may make-believe
- 39:41um kidnapper.
- 39:45>> Somebody could take such two beautiful
- 39:47children.
- 39:49>> That somebody could take Yeah, let's
- 39:51listen to this bit again. Again, it's
- 39:53minimizing. They're only children.
- 39:56And and it seems so unfair that somebody
- 40:03And she used them, didn't she, as a
- 40:05pronoun?
- 40:10Possibly referring to the to them, the
- 40:12couple. I don't know. I'll have to
- 40:14listen to that again and sit on it, but
- 40:15it was an error.
- 40:17Listen listen one more time
- 40:19to how she says this bit.
- 40:21>> My family and by myself with my husband.
- 40:26It just seems so unfair that somebody
- 40:29could take such two beautiful children.
- 40:32And I don't I don't
- 40:34>> And she did you notice the
- 40:35self-censorship halfway through that
- 40:38sentence? So, in would go the deception
- 40:40marker,
- 40:41the deception flag for the
- 40:43self-censorship.
- 40:47>> understand.
- 40:50>> If you missed that, let's
- 40:51>> so unfair that somebody could take such
- 40:54two beautiful children.
- 40:56And I don't I don't
- 40:58>> [snorts]
- 40:58>> She said such
- 41:00and then she self-censored and said two
- 41:03beautiful children. Did you Did you
- 41:04notice it?
- 41:09Carry on.
- 41:10>> understand.
- 41:14I I have put
- 41:17all my trust and faith in the Lord that
- 41:19he's taking care of them
- 41:21and that he will bring them home to us.
- 41:34>> Uh okay. Now, I'm with it now. I
- 41:37understand better.
- 41:38She's putting all
- 41:41her faith in the Lord that he will take
- 41:44care of them and he will bring them back
- 41:46to us. So, that's what she meant. Do
- 41:47forgive my confusion earlier.
- 41:57But she knows what she knows. And if
- 41:59she's putting all of her faith in the
- 42:01Lord to take care of them,
- 42:07then there's that obituary type of
- 42:09language still.
- 42:12So, I was confused.
- 42:15But, there's still something there.
- 42:21Let's carry on.
- 42:23>> That's all. Okay, I won't say anything
- 42:25else.
- 42:26>> Good luck.
- 42:27Good luck.
- 42:28>> Thank you.
- 42:32I'll answer a few questions now.
- 42:35>> [clears throat]
- 42:40>> It was promising at the first look when
- 42:41[clears throat] you got here.
- 42:43>> We found out when we first arrived.
- 42:45>> And was the was the report to you
- 42:47initially of a live sighting?
- 42:49>> It is our understanding that was the
- 42:51case.
- 42:52>> When did you first hear that there was
- 42:54good news?
- 42:56>> That came um early this morning to in a
- 42:59phone call
- 43:00to the house.
- 43:01>> What time, Margaret?
- 43:02>> I believe around 6:30 this morning.
- 43:05>> What was
- 43:06Susan and David's reaction to that?
- 43:10>> As Sheriff Wells explained to us, he was
- 43:12extremely encouraged by the lead that he
- 43:14received this morning.
- 43:16And it certainly gave us a lot of hope
- 43:18to hang on to.
- 43:20Um
- 43:22>> Okay, so that brings us to the end of
- 43:25the Veriscope. Well, I hope that you
