2. 0:03for two young boys has gripped the
3. 0:05nation I want to say to my
4. 0:09babies your mama loves you so much their
5. 0:13mother Susan Smith claims she's been
6. 0:16carjacked and her sons Michael and Alex
7. 0:18taken by a black man the boy's Father
8. 0:20David Smith sticking by his wife's side
9. 0:23just like much of the country but it's
10. 0:25all
11. 0:26alive after 9 days of searching Susan
12. 0:29Smith confesses to buckling her boys
13. 0:31into the family car and driving it into
14. 0:34a Leake Susan Smith is convicted for
15. 0:36their deaths and sentenced to 30 years
16. 0:39in prison now three decades later Smith
17. 0:42is up for parole and for the first time
18. 0:44since her trial she will hear her
19. 0:46ex-husband David speak out to oppose her
20. 0:49release your ex-wife is going to face a
21. 0:52parole board and you're going to be
22. 0:54there what do you plan to say they can't
23. 0:57let her out
24. 1:00years is just not enough this wasn't an
25. 1:03accident she
26. 1:05deliberately killed Michael Alex you
27. 1:08don't think she's been rehabilitated I
28. 1:10don't think she'll ever be rehabilitated
29. 1:12to me she's never even been really sorry
30. 1:15for what she did Susan Smith's
31. 1:17incarceration has been troubled in 2000
32. 1:20She was transferred to a new prison
33. 1:21after having sex with two guards she's
34. 1:24also been disciplined for drug use in
35. 1:272015 she wrote to a local newspaper
36. 1:29reporter saying quote I am not the
37. 1:31monster Society thinks I am something
38. 1:33went very wrong that night I was not
39. 1:36myself I was a good mother and I love my
40. 1:38boys I've never denied that she was a
41. 1:41great mother up until the moment that
42. 1:44she killed him no signs no sign she
43. 1:47would ever hurt them that's why I
44. 1:48believed her the whole nine days I never
45. 1:51doubted her David's emotions turned dark
46. 1:54during Susan's Trial as you sat there
47. 1:57during the trial what was going through
48. 1:59your mind
49. 2:01I used to sit there and look at the back
50. 2:02of her
51. 2:03head and then look at where the BFFs
52. 2:07were and think about killing
53. 2:10her how quick could I get to her could I
54. 2:12reach her before that officer reaches me
55. 2:16yeah you wanted her dead I
56. 2:19did David Smith is remarried and is a
57. 2:22father again but he's never forgotten
58. 2:24Michael and Alex usually it's a song
59. 2:27that I hear no not any particular
60. 2:29particular song just different songs and
61. 2:32I it just makes me
62. 2:35remember how much I miss
63. 2:37him I wish I could tell
64. 2:41him I miss you so
65. 2:46much his anguish he says would be
66. 2:48greater if Susan is released if she does
67. 2:53get paroled do you worry that she's a a
68. 2:57threat to society what scares me is that
69. 2:59that she would get out and then running
70. 3:02into her somewhere what does that worry
71. 3:04you CU I don't want to see her I don't
72. 3:07ever want to have to face her Craig God
73. 3:13gives us Free Will and that was her
74. 3:16choice that night nobody else's Choice
75. 3:19nobody made it for her she made the
76. 3:22choice to murder Michael Alex have you
77. 3:25forgiven her of
78. 3:27course why it doesn't matter the
79. 3:31pain any
80. 3:33L but I had to forgive her and to move
81. 3:36on with my life I had to forgive her cuz
82. 3:38it was just going to eat me up if I
83. 3:40didn't as you might imagine it's not
84. 3:42been an easy time uh for David Smith a
85. 3:44lot of painful thoughts of resurfaced
86. 3:46but he's he's taken heart in all the
87. 3:48folks who still remember Michael and
88. 3:50Alex and honor their memories we should
89. 3:52point out we did reach out to Susan
90. 3:53Smith's attorney they declined to to
91. 3:55comment for our story talk to a legal
92. 3:57expert down in South Carolina it's
93. 3:58highly unlikely that she actually gets
94. 4:01paroled but the David Smith that we saw
95. 4:03there he's come a long long way in 30
96. 4:06years he spent some time talking about
97. 4:07some of the the darker moments in the
98. 4:09wake of his son's deaths and and he
99. 4:11nearly took his own life a couple of
100. 4:13times but he credits his wife Tiffany
101. 4:15his new wife with helping him get
102. 4:17through it but that grief is just so
103. 4:19evident it will never can never go away
