2. 0:04something come up the other day on Susan
3. 0:06Smith and I thought wow it's been a long
4. 0:08time since we've seen this one and so I
5. 0:11want to kind of give you a
6. 0:13rundown if you
7. 0:16remember she said her children were
8. 0:19carjacked kind of a Diane Downs
9. 0:22situation going on
10. 0:24here and come to find out they weren't
11. 0:27she rolled her vehicle into the water
12. 0:30and uh these poor babies lost their
13. 0:33lives it was a very sad story it was
14. 0:36very emotional and back then even with
15. 0:38you know without
16. 0:40the access that we have to these trials
17. 0:43like we do now it it it was all over the
18. 0:46place her husband has even let me show
19. 0:49you guys
20. 0:51this show you what her sus her husband
21. 0:54even did a book about his life with
22. 0:58her and and I'm I'm sure you can find
23. 1:02that on
24. 1:03Amazon let's see what
25. 1:05else her mother also wrote a book it
26. 1:09looks like she's kind of did it for like
27. 1:10a healing purposes and to help people
28. 1:12better understand what was going on
29. 1:14inside edition also did a video on her
30. 1:17it was about a two-minute video uh this
31. 1:19was about three years
32. 1:20ago but what I wanted to read to you
33. 1:23guys now is a little bit on the case and
34. 1:25then kind of bring you up to par because
35. 1:27I heard that there's been she's coming
36. 1:30up for
37. 1:31roll and her family is saying uh-uh
38. 1:36uh-uh we're not having
39. 1:39it I want to find the article so I can
40. 1:41show it to you
41. 1:43guys the last time she had an appeal it
42. 1:46looks like it was on in
43. 1:492010 did I say appeal I meant to say uh
44. 1:53parole I say appeal I meant to say
45. 1:55parole hang
46. 1:57on so in November of next year she is
47. 2:00eligible for parole and it's raised a
48. 2:03lot of concerns and a lot of people are
49. 2:05outraged about
50. 2:06it looks like people did an article on
51. 2:09her in 2022 and it says
52. 2:12that she did have a long-distance
53. 2:14boyfriend but now she's no longer
54. 2:16communicating when them share this
55. 2:19screen with you
56. 2:20guys so that's what she looked like then
57. 2:23that's what she looks like now she's
58. 2:26actually gotten a lot better looking
59. 2:27with age
60. 2:30she still did something horrible though
61. 2:32on October 25th of 1994 she was 23 years
62. 2:3523 years old at the time she told police
63. 2:38she had been carjacked by a black man
64. 2:39who had taken off with her two young
65. 2:41Sons still in her
66. 2:42car and for nine days she made tearful
67. 2:45pleas on National Television for their
68. 2:47safe
69. 2:49return as her story began to unravel
70. 2:51Smith admitted that there was no
71. 2:53carjacking and that she had let her car
72. 2:56roll into the lake with Michael 3 and
73. 3:00Alex 14 months still strapped into their
74. 3:04car
75. 3:05seats her motive she was oh of course of
76. 3:10course she was secretly dating a man who
77. 3:12didn't want children the story became
78. 3:14international news even landing on the
79. 3:16cover of people Smith was convicted of
80. 3:19two counts of unal living and is serving
81. 3:21aive sentence at leth Correctional
82. 3:23Institution in Greenwood South
83. 3:25Carolina her time Behind Bars has been
84. 3:28fraught with disciplinary action
85. 3:30including elicit drug use
86. 3:32interesting
87. 3:35self-mutilation and sexual contact with
88. 3:37a
89. 3:39guard but Smith claims she has been
90. 3:42misunderstood in 2015 she wrote a letter
91. 3:45to the state at I am not the monster
92. 3:47Society thinks that I am I am far from
93. 3:50it something went very wrong that night
94. 3:53I was not myself I was a good mother and
95. 3:55I love my boys there was no motive as it
96. 3:57was not even a planned event I was not
97. 4:00in my right
98. 4:02mind her ex-husband and the father of
99. 4:04the boys told people in 2010 that he has
100. 4:07never fully recovered from the pain
101. 4:09there's always this nagging and gnawing
102. 4:11a heartache if there's ever a day even
103. 4:14if I'm not always conscious of it can
104. 4:16you imagine waking up every day knowing
105. 4:17that your children are
106. 4:19gone the last few years Smith has been
107. 4:22behaving herself in the hopes that she
108. 4:24would be paroled in November of
109. 4:262024 in her prison letters to her
110. 4:29boyfriend she expressed a desire to
111. 4:30settle down and find true happiness on
112. 4:32the
113. 4:33outside I don't think she's got a
114. 4:35snowball chance in hell of getting
115. 4:36paroled in 2024 their family members
116. 4:39told people I think he realized that too
117. 4:42she's exactly where she needs to be so I
118. 4:46guess her boyfriend's giving up on her
119. 4:48and thinking she's never going to get
120. 4:49out oh they got all kinds of stuff on
121. 4:51her there's all kinds of articles but I
122. 4:55saw an article that I want to take you
123. 4:57guys to about her family saying that
124. 4:59they would not back her for parole yeah
125. 5:03this is it she's got no family support
126. 5:07with her upcoming
127. 5:08parole but a relative tells the
128. 5:10messenger that she's not finding it
129. 5:13she's not finding support she wants
130. 5:15affidavits and letters from us that show
131. 5:18that she's got a support system the
132. 5:20family member says but that is a lot to
133. 5:23ask of us we still miss the boys Smith
134. 5:25was 20 they say 22 the other one said
135. 5:28she was 23 when she let her car roll
136. 5:30into John D long lake with her two sons
137. 5:36inside she plans to attend a hearing to
138. 5:40request release in nove on November 4th
139. 5:42of 2024 she's been trying to line up
140. 5:45support but she hasn't gotten any I
141. 5:47don't think she'll ever find anyone in
142. 5:48the family willing to vouch for
143. 5:51her her ex-husband David also opposes
144. 5:54her parole and is planning to file an
145. 5:56affidavit urging the parole board to
146. 5:57keep her behind bars
147. 6:01there's another old picture of her going
148. 6:03into
149. 6:04jail she is now 51 years
150. 6:08old and has struggled with her her
151. 6:10behavior in
152. 6:12jail okay let's go down what she's had
153. 6:14issues with okay so in 2000 she was
154. 6:16disciplined for having sex with a prison
155. 6:18guard then according to prison records
156. 6:20obtained by the messenger she faced
157. 6:22disciplinary action at least five times
158. 6:25between 2010 and 2015 for various
159. 6:28infractions including self mutilation
160. 6:30and the use of possession of Narcotics
161. 6:32or marijuana and just a side note and a
162. 6:36disclaimer this channel does not contone
163. 6:38any kind of self harm or use of
164. 6:43drugs but more recently Smith is cleaned
165. 6:45her act up presumably in the hopes that
166. 6:47she'll be granted Parole in 2015 she
167. 6:49pinned a letter from jail to a reporter
168. 6:51at The State newspaper I'm not the
169. 6:53monster Society thanks I am we already
170. 6:56read that part
171. 6:57okay she says in that letter the thing
172. 7:00that hurts me the most is that people
173. 7:01think I hurt my children in order to be
174. 7:03with a man that is so far from the truth
175. 7:06there was no motive as as it was not
176. 7:07even a planned event I was not in my
177. 7:09right
178. 7:10mind a spokesperson for the South
179. 7:13Carolina Department of Probation Parole
180. 7:15and pardon Services tells the messenger
181. 7:17that inmates ask often ask family
182. 7:20members to file affidavit in support of
183. 7:22their release but that it's not
184. 7:24mandatory I'm truly glad she cleaned up
185. 7:27her act says the relative I'm glad she
186. 7:28can be productive Ive inside prison but
187. 7:30that's where she needs to stay what's
188. 7:32she going to get out and do what's the
189. 7:34plan she doesn't have one if I'm being
190. 7:37really honest with you I don't want her
191. 7:39in my house every time I'd look at her
192. 7:41i' think of those boys it would be too
193. 7:43much I wonder if that was her own
194. 7:46mother kind of makes you
195. 7:49wonder all right so that's it guys I
196. 7:51just want to give you an update on this
197. 7:54person and uh because it's been a long
198. 7:56time since I've seen anything come out
199. 7:58of that story and probably a long time
