- 0:00film crew but was unable to acclimate he
- 0:03remained at Advanced base camp to
- 0:05support the team his video diary records
- 0:08what happens
- 0:10next with information from the shus
- 0:12Lincoln is I suppose best described
- 0:16as as crazy this altitude crazy I've
- 0:20just heard that the shers are trying to
- 0:22literally kick him to move but he's he's
- 0:26just gone
- 0:28mad the sherper have no choice but to
- 0:31try and manhandle Lincoln down to Safety
- 0:35in the communications tent Lincoln's
- 0:37teammate Richard Harris tries to make
- 0:40him Focus Lincoln Lincoln this is
- 0:42Richard Barbara's waiting for you de and
- 0:45dors you're waiting for you you need to
- 0:47come down
- 0:51now hemba Thomas Weber's Sherpa arrives
- 0:55to help with Lincoln's rescue I'd have
- 0:58some moments of lucidity
- 1:01yes what are you doing
- 1:03here he said Thomas Thomas has
- 1:07died and that was just uh this a huge
- 1:11shock just seemed so
- 1:13inconceivable since he seemed to have
- 1:14been going so well and that's then I
- 1:18shut down
- 1:23again cerebral edema is toying with
- 1:27Lincoln's
- 1:28mind
- 1:34I thought I was in Queensland a really
- 1:36severe case of wishful thinking you know
- 1:38I actually felt quite safe and quite
- 1:41happy just to be
- 1:42[Music]
- 1:44there and then I heard an Australian
- 1:47voice speaking English Lincoln I think
- 1:51that your mind is playing tricks with
- 1:53you and you are trying to fight the
- 1:56shers they're trying to help you down
- 1:59please help them help yourself for your
- 2:02family's sake at our
- 2:04sake I suddenly took the instruction to
- 2:07continue
- 2:08absil in his delusional State Lincoln
- 2:11has to absil down the treacherous Second
- 2:14Step all the sherpers can do is watch
- 2:22helplessly in Australia Lincoln Hall's
- 2:25wife Barbara Waits anxiously for news
- 2:28from Everest
- 2:31[Music]
- 2:34then comes the worrying news that
- 2:36Lincoln is still near the summit I
- 2:39immediately felt really sick and full of
- 2:42dread because he would have been up near
- 2:45the summit for probably 6 or 7 hours and
- 2:51I couldn't imagine what difficulty he
- 2:53was having at 28,000 ft Lincoln's
- 2:57difficulty is the Second Step this
- 2:59footage shows the 150 ft vertical rock
- 3:02face in his disoriented State it's
- 3:05proving extremely dangerous my mind was
- 3:08saying absil but my body couldn't handle
- 3:10it I whed down the ropes pretty well out
- 3:12of
- 3:15control what happened was I swung across
- 3:17and and and slammed into
- 3:20Pima to try and stop the uh me hurting
- 3:25him so much I sort of uh thought well
- 3:27I'll I'll use my uh the spring of my my
- 3:29leg to slow down the impact but
- 3:31unfortunately I had these spiky things
- 3:33called crampons on the end of my boots
- 3:35which are really sharp I mean the design
- 3:37so your feet don't slip on Ice well they
- 3:39certainly didn't slip on pima's thigh
- 3:47[Music]
- 3:49either at the time I hadn't realized i'
- 3:52i' I'd hit him with the crampons and
- 3:53that I'd actually wounded his leg quite
- 3:55badly and we're like two spiders with a
- 3:58hanging beneath this cliff on our ABS
- 4:06RS Amber is badly hurt but he and the
- 4:09other three sherpers simply refuse to
- 4:12give up on Lincoln people say that the
- 4:14sherpers should have left me when I was
- 4:18being really difficult but the sheers
- 4:20just don't think like that what they
- 4:23were engaged in doing was getting me
- 4:24down the mountain and that's what they
- 4:26were going to do the sherp has really
- 4:28struggled to get me as far as they could
- 4:31but eventually they had to
- 4:33[Music]
- 4:35stop in an extraordinary feet of
- 4:38endurance the sherpers have dragged
- 4:40Lincoln as far as they can but at 28,000
- 4:43ft they are still in the death zone
- 4:46running out of oxygen here means almost
- 4:49certain death when laka DOI dawa and
- 4:53Pema finally got me to the point where I
- 4:55spent a night they could do nothing else
- 4:58we had a n 18 hour day there and it
- 5:01wasn't 9 hours of descent I mean it was
- 5:049 hours of struggle and so it was an
- 5:06extraordinary hard thing for them
- 5:08physically we'd all run out of oxygen
- 5:11dehydrated we were all close to death
- 5:14but Lincoln faces yet another threat the
- 5:18bitter
- 5:19cold frostbite is the result of the
- 5:22body's attempt to preserve its core
- 5:24temperature blood vessels near the skin
- 5:27begin to constrict forcing blood to the
- 5:29the essential organs without warmth the
- 5:32cells in the extremities begin to
- 5:36freeze down at Advanced base camp Kevin
- 5:40orelo is realizing that time is running
- 5:43out decision at some point has got to be
- 5:46made to leave him to die yeah but could
- 5:49could you your best friend no
- 5:51F yeah but the decision has got to be
- 5:53made by by by the sherpers and
- 5:56[Applause]
- 5:58Alex they
- 6:00can't they're on a knife edge Ridge that
- 6:02only one person can walk
- 6:05by you can't if he doesn't want to move
- 6:08because he's just become completely
- 6:10Delirious what can I do and at what
- 6:13point do you decide them because
- 6:14otherwise you're going to have you're
- 6:15going to have one dead climber plus
- 6:18three dead sherpers
- 6:20[Applause]
- 6:28here
- 6:31it's at this point that Lincoln slips
- 6:33into a coma due to cerebral
- 6:36edema his brain is shutting down and his
- 6:40respiration becomes barely
- 6:46perceptible from what I understand they
- 6:49were monitoring my you know Vital Signs
- 6:52my breathing was getting less and less
- 6:54frequent and more and more shallow they
- 6:56couldn't find a pulse one of them poked
- 6:58me in the eye to which I didn't respond
- 7:00at
- 7:00[Music]
- 7:02all at 5:20 p.m. the sherpers declare
- 7:06him
- 7:11dead the decision has has to be
- 7:14made to save sher's
- 7:18lives and that's to leave
- 7:20[Applause]
- 7:22Lincoln sherpers have been working at
- 7:26over 8,000 M now for over 24 hours
- 7:30and although the Sher people are very
- 7:32strong and very tough and very kind and
- 7:36loyal there only so much they can do
- 7:38before their own lives been put at
- 7:40risk the sherpers stay with Lincoln for
- 7:43another 2 hours until finally Expedition
- 7:46leader Alex abramov orders them
- 7:49down they take Lincoln's belongings and
- 7:52he's left alone without oxygen water or
- 7:58shelter
- 8:04[Music]
- 8:08nobody has ever been left for dead this
- 8:10high and
- 8:13[Music]
- 8:18survived I
- 8:21was meditating by the fire and somehow I
- 8:26felt Lincoln's arms around
- 8:30me and I didn't like the feeling of that
- 8:34at
- 8:36all my next step of course was to have
- 8:38to pH uh Barbara his wife and that's we
- 8:42just knew what a tragedy we were just a
- 8:44small part of his life but to to have to
- 8:46suddenly make the phone call to
- 8:48say that um you know he he died to his
- 8:52to his family that was that was
- 8:57terrible another phone call came came
- 8:59through from base camp and I just knew
- 9:03instantly that it was the worst news
- 9:05possible and I didn't want to to hear it
- 9:09and I didn't want to continue the
- 9:11conversation but I had to be told Mom
- 9:14called us out there and it was it had
- 9:17been Mar could called
- 9:20um
- 9:22and um she sat us down on the couch
- 9:26and said
- 9:28um
- 9:30boys um about 20 minutes ago your dad
- 9:33passed
- 9:35away well everything just seemed to go
- 9:38blank and we just sat there together in
- 9:42a
- 9:43huddle holding hands and hugging and
- 9:46crying
- 9:49and we didn't know what to
- 9:53[Music]
- 9:58do
- 10:01alone the highest person on Earth
- 10:05Lincoln Hall has been declared
- 10:10dead but something unexpected happens
- 10:13that night the weather begins to change
- 10:16a blanket of cloud covers Lincoln
- 10:19preventing the temperature from dropping
- 10:21below minus
- 10:2325° I mean it's very hard to know
- 10:25exactly what
- 10:26happened or resurfaced some now and I
- 10:30actually woke
- 10:31up and I realized where I
- 10:33[Music]
- 10:36was Lincoln's luck begins to change
- 10:39whatever way you look at it it was a
- 10:41very strange set of
- 10:43circumstances
