- 0:17>> Hi everyone. I'm Diego and I'm the map
- 0:18designer for Summit.
- 0:19>> And I'm Erica. I'm on the game analysis
- 0:21team known as GAT. Our [music] team
- 0:23consists of former pros and high-ranked
- 0:25players where our skill is the most
- 0:26crucial thing in testing the game at the
- 0:28highest level of play.
- 0:30>> Summit's layout isn't too different from
- 0:31what you're used to, so you can rely on
- 0:33your game knowledge and intuition to
- 0:34[music] learn the map pretty quickly.
- 0:36However, what's unique about Summit is
- 0:38this new door mechanism we've introduced
- 0:40that allows for more creative and
- 0:41strategic plays.
- 0:42>> [music]
- 0:42>> So here we are at the entrance to A main
- 0:44and I just wanted to show a couple
- 0:46angles when you first [music] enter the
- 0:47space as an attacker. So here you've got
- 0:49like a little jump up to get a neat
- 0:51little off angle on someone who might be
- 0:52trying to [music] peek A main as a
- 0:54defender. You know, it's pretty easy to
- 0:56just throw like an omen blind here or
- 0:58something and just grab the space. Just
- 1:00be aware you won't have it for, you
- 1:01know, sight cuz the sight's pretty close
- 1:03to the entrance to main here. This is a
- 1:04pretty good smoke to just kind of deny
- 1:06people from peeking the quad stack here.
- 1:09You get to [music] isolate just the left
- 1:10side or maybe, you know, if they're in
- 1:11the smoke you can send a Sova drone or a
- 1:13Skye dog just to clear it and you keep
- 1:15going. Another thing you can do, of
- 1:17course, is smoke the the doorway where
- 1:19the door is and you shoot it.
- 1:21So the door has 125 HP. Once it's
- 1:24closed, it's closed for the rest of the
- 1:25round and so now you don't have to worry
- 1:26about that.
- 1:27>> Even with the door down, it doesn't mean
- 1:29the round's
- 1:30>> done yet. Certain agents allow for
- 1:32utility through the little window.
- 1:34Before that window was there, uh
- 1:35defender retakes felt a little stuffed.
- 1:38When we added the window, suddenly a lot
- 1:40more agents on our roster became [music]
- 1:42like viable. It just added a lot more
- 1:43depth to this area.
- 1:44>> Yeah, again, another reason why the door
- 1:46is, you know, [music] seems simple at
- 1:48first, but it might have more layers to
- 1:50it than you think. Oh, and if you time
- 1:52it just right, the doors are lethal and
- 1:54that includes if you're in your role or
- 1:56Rena dismiss.
- 1:58>> This same idea applies to mid. It's
- 2:00chaotic, almost a bloodbath, but it's
- 2:02crucial for map control.
- 2:04>> There's going to be some fights here
- 2:05that you'll notice like right off the
- 2:07bat. You turn this corner on this box,
- 2:09and boom.
- 2:10This is the fight I tell myself I can
- 2:12win, and then I peek it, and I die.
- 2:14>> And you peek it, and you die, yeah. But
- 2:16as you come to mid, you'll notice it's
- 2:17pretty open. We want to make sure that
- 2:19as a as an attacker, you want you to
- 2:21think a a little bit more methodically
- 2:22about how you're taking this space, and
- 2:23when and where you want to use your
- 2:25smoke.
- 2:27>> So yeah, we're here at the interest of
- 2:29B. The angle is here a little bit more
- 2:30medium to close range. We've got this
- 2:32little jump up here to help break some
- 2:33defender crosshairs, just so that
- 2:35attackers have a little bit more
- 2:37optionality in terms of how they want to
- 2:38peek the initial fight. You both swing
- 2:40at the same time, maybe the elements
- 2:41folks have in here, right?
- 2:42>> Yeah, the jump up was huge. Suddenly
- 2:44approaching this B main angle became a
- 2:46lot more viable for attackers. We wanted
- 2:48the map to be a little bit more
- 2:49approachable, but have this really
- 2:51interesting site mechanic. You can use
- 2:53your intuition from what you've learned
- 2:54on on previous
- 2:55>> maps, and focus on, you know, how we're
- 2:57going to use the door, you know, do I
- 2:58want to leave it open and get up there
- 2:59and, you know, try to play aggressively
- 3:01to stop the retakes, or do we want to
- 3:02close it and hole up and like kind of
- 3:04like fortify ourselves on the site.
- 3:08>> 120.
- 3:09>> So my favorite part of Summit is
- 3:10actually this cave area. I don't think
- 3:12we've ever seen anything like this in
- 3:14Valorant so far, where we actually bend
- 3:17the map around. Instead of having like
- 3:18sharp geometric angles, this feels a lot
- 3:21more natural to the space. It's [music]
- 3:23dicey to get caught out in the open
- 3:25here, but I just think it it opens up
- 3:27the the map so much to different agents.
- 3:30Um it's new, it's unique. I don't know,
- 3:33I just I like playing in this area.
- 3:35>> One of my favorite parts of the map is
- 3:36honestly the trophy room. Um you have
- 3:39all these super cool statues of all of
- 3:41the masters of the of the academy, and
- 3:43you know, you've got some some cute
- 3:45little pictures. Like here's Iso when he
- 3:46was younger with a trophy. You know,
- 3:48he's he's been killing it since since
- 3:50day one.
- 3:51>> On the spawn, The water has accurate
- 3:53reflections. We have like these these
- 3:55new shaders that we put in for the ruse
- 3:57and that like move as you move. You
- 3:59know, we got these little guys actually.
- 4:01>> Oh, I love the little guys. Yeah.
- 4:05>> You can you can break them.
- 4:07>> I'm a big little guy enjoyer. I love
- 4:09finding a new one in a play test when I
- 4:12hadn't seen it before. Like that one.
- 4:14I didn't know that guy was there. Oh my
- 4:16god.
- 4:23>> [music]
- 4:31>> My name's Danny Mcgallan and I'm the
- 4:32environment art director for the maps.
- 4:34Being globally authentic is a core value
- 4:36in working on the Val team. So, when we
- 4:38knew this map was going to be based in
- 4:39China, four of us actually went there to
- 4:41experience it first hand [music] to make
- 4:43sure we could capture its beauty and
- 4:45absorb the culture.
- 4:48We spent 11 days in Shanghai, Suzhou,
- 4:51Wuzhen, and the Zhangjiajie Mountains
- 4:53where we saw the majesty and even got to
- 4:55hike to the top.
- 4:57We got to see first hand how massive
- 4:58[music] these mountains truly are.
- 5:06>> [music]
- 5:06>> And in order to capture as much cultural
- 5:08authenticity as possible, we hired an
- 5:10architect who spent several days with us
- 5:12guiding us through everything that we
- 5:13encountered.
- 5:16One of the fun things that we learned
- 5:17while visiting the gardens in Suzhou and
- 5:19Wuzhen was that traditional Chinese
- 5:21bridges are designed in a zigzag pattern
- 5:23rather than a straight line because in
- 5:25Chinese folklore, this is said to deter
- 5:27zombies that can only travel in straight
- 5:29paths.
- 5:30We incorporated this concept into Summit
- 5:32by building an angled bridge in the
- 5:33defender spawn inspired by that same
- 5:35tradition.
- 5:36Another example is the window designs
- 5:38with intricate patterns meant to
- 5:40resemble cracked ice which is a symbol
- 5:42of winter ending. And that transition
- 5:44into spring represents renewal
- 5:46>> [music]
- 5:46>> and hope.
- 5:48Our design was to make the map feel
- 5:49authentic to Chinese players [music] who
- 5:51would recognize a lot of these subtle
- 5:53details.
- 5:54My favorite part of the map would either
- 5:55be the Tianzi Mountains that we have
- 5:58[music] in the vista behind attacker
- 5:59spawn, or they would be the gymnasium on
- 6:03B site that allows players to interact,
- 6:06activate it, and then watch a
- 6:07holographic version of Jett and Sage
- 6:09practicing their abilities. Summit is
- 6:11deeply tied to Sage's past and present.
- 6:14Before it became the Radiant Training
- 6:15Academy, Summit was a tiny village that
- 6:17supported a mountain top training
- 6:19monastery where Sage trained and
- 6:20mastered her powers. If you check out
- 6:22her room, you'll notice small personal
- 6:24effects woven throughout the space.
- 6:25>> [music]
- 6:26>> And in the headmaster's office, you can
- 6:27see a representation of Sage's skill
- 6:29progression through a series of teapots.
- 6:31Early in her training, Sage learned to
- 6:33craft teapots as a way to develop
- 6:35precision and control. You'll see five
- 6:37teapots displayed, each representing a
- 6:39different stage of her journey and her
- 6:41steady mastery of her abilities. Now
- 6:43she's returned after pushing herself
- 6:44beyond her limits to keep her teammates
- 6:46alive. Constant battles against Viper
- 6:48from Omega Earth have forced Sage to
- 6:50overuse her abilities, taking a serious
- 6:52physical toll as you can see from the
- 6:54radianite crystals that have formed on
- 6:56her skin. In the Summit Hall, you can
- 6:58find a hologram of her body that
- 6:59highlights those crystals, offering in a
- 7:01closer look into what she's going
- 7:03through. By returning to Summit, she
- 7:05hopes that through further study and
- 7:06re-tuning her powers to the natural
- 7:08radianite of the surrounding [music]
- 7:09mountains, it'll prevent her from
- 7:11crystallizing completely.
- 7:13There's a lot more nods to Sage
- 7:14throughout the map, so feel free to
- 7:16explore and let us know what you find.
- 7:26>> [music]
