Summary of Chapter 3 — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:02in this chapter we started looking at
- 0:05the histamine two blockers and they're
- 0:08not able to affect the cell without
- 0:11being absorbed into the system so we
- 0:14took the opportunity to start developing
- 0:17a good foundation of pharmacokinetics we
- 0:20simply aimed to get a good picture of
- 0:24each process the absorption distribution
- 0:28metabolism and excretion of our
- 0:31medications
- 0:32and don't worry if you didn't catch
- 0:35everything
- 0:36understanding pharmacokinetics is very
- 0:39difficult so I'll take you through a
- 0:41review of pharmacokinetics using the
- 0:44proton pump inhibitors as the example in
- 0:47the next chapter I think you'll find
- 0:49that you know a lot more about the topic
- 0:52than you realize
- 0:54and since the histamine 2 antagonists
- 0:57have a common suffix which is tidene
- 1:01t-i-d-i-n-e we took the opportunity to
- 1:04start developing the skill of finding
- 1:07the portion of the generic name that
- 1:09tells us which drug class the medication
- 1:12belongs to we also learned a bit more
- 1:15about the potential selective nature of
- 1:18some drugs as we were discussing the
- 1:20histamine 2 blocking drugs recall that
- 1:24the histamine two blockers do not have
- 1:27an affinity for the histamine one
- 1:29receptor
- 1:31and as such they don't have the actions
- 1:35that are commonly associated with the
- 1:37antihistamines
- 1:40recall that the medications we refer to
- 1:43as antihistamines bind to the H1
- 1:48receptor and as such they decrease the
- 1:52runny nose the itchy eyes and
- 1:54inflammation that's caused by the
- 1:55histamine in the nasal passages
- 1:59well that histamine one receptor is a
- 2:03slightly different receptor and the
- 2:05histamine II receptor blockers act
- 2:08almost exclusively on the histamine II
- 2:12receptor
- 2:13finally we learned a bit about the
- 2:16actions indications contraindications
- 2:19and side effects of the histamine 2
- 2:22blocking drugs
- 2:24in the next chapter we'll get a really
- 2:27good picture of enzymatic Inhibitors and
- 2:31take one specific enzymatic inhibitor
- 2:35called the proton pump inhibitor
