Subliminals 101 - how to listen THE CORRECT WAY — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00If you have heard about subliminals or
- 0:02even hypnosis by neural beats or
- 0:04frequencies, you're wondering if it
- 0:06works, if it's a hoax, can you actually
- 0:08manifest drastic appearance changes,
- 0:11lots of money, or your SP, specific
- 0:14person. Here's the thing, there is over
- 0:17a century of documented research behind
- 0:20it, and today the most popular form of
- 0:22subliminals is audio. Now, there is a
- 0:25specific way to listen to subliminals,
- 0:27but people don't really talk about what
- 0:29they are. Where it came from, why it
- 0:31works, how to do it correctly and
- 0:33safely, or explain what you might be
- 0:36doing wrong and making everything worse.
- 0:38So, I will. My name is May, my podcast
- 0:42and community is called Stoic Angels,
- 0:44where we talk about complete
- 0:45transformation of the mind, body, and
- 0:47spirit. If you're into that, don't
- 0:49forget to subscribe because there's more
- 0:51where this comes from. Not to mention,
- 0:53this subject is near and dear to my
- 0:55heart because I studied design
- 0:56psychology, I got dual degrees in them.
- 0:58So, my very first YouTube channel, which
- 1:01honestly doesn't count because I only
- 1:02posted two videos, I made my own
- 1:03subliminal audio and I posted it online
- 1:06on my channel because I couldn't find
- 1:07any that I like. It actually did pretty
- 1:10well, I got like 2,000 views, but the
- 1:12idea of subliminal messaging itself is
- 1:14very much a cross between my two
- 1:16academic disciplines and I actually
- 1:18actively use it to change my thoughts,
- 1:20designing the mind, so to speak. If you
- 1:22want to go even deeper on this and put
- 1:23in the work, I actually made a free
- 1:25guide and workbook that walks you
- 1:27through building your own subconscious
- 1:29reprogramming practice. It's linked in
- 1:32the description below this video and you
- 1:34can download it for free. Thank you to
- 1:36Opera Air for sponsoring this video.
- 1:37Before we get into our subliminal deep
- 1:39dive, I wanted to talk about the fact
- 1:41that the research for this video almost
- 1:42didn't happen because I was reading one
- 1:44study, 3 hours later I was in a deep
- 1:46rabbit hole, 14 tabs into reading about
- 1:48CIA experiments in the '50s. I was also
- 1:51on my phone this entire time while I was
- 1:54doing this. So, sometimes it's not about
- 1:56your lack of focus, but the system that
- 1:58you're using. Specifically, it's your
- 2:00browser. I have been using Opera Air for
- 2:02over a year now. It is my main browser,
- 2:05and the whole concept behind it, when I
- 2:07first heard about them, is actually
- 2:09shocking because they measure success by
- 2:11how quickly you get off the internet and
- 2:13log off. Many of us rely on the internet
- 2:16to do our job, but we don't have to let
- 2:18it take over our lives. The interface
- 2:20itself is radically clean, no
- 2:22notification spam, no messy widgets.
- 2:25Everything I do use, I can choose to
- 2:27have on my sidebar, hide it if I want
- 2:30to. One of my favorite new features is
- 2:32the flow state feature. Opera Air has
- 2:34curated focus music and audio
- 2:36frequencies built into the browser, so
- 2:38you don't need a separate Spotify tab
- 2:41clogging up your RAM space. Speaking of
- 2:43that, my opinion, like out of all the
- 2:44ones I tried so far, this is one of the
- 2:46lightest browsers I've ever used, and
- 2:48also another reason why it's my main
- 2:50browser. On the flow state tab, you just
- 2:52click the button, pick what you want to
- 2:53use, and it plays focus music while you
- 2:55work. When you're done, you close your
- 2:57laptop and get back to the rest of your
- 2:58life. If you want a browser that
- 3:00actually helps you stay on track and get
- 3:02more of your day back, download Opera
- 3:04Air for free using the link in my
- 3:05description. So, what are subliminals
- 3:08actually? Let's start from the
- 3:09beginning. A subliminal is any kind of
- 3:12stimulus that exists below the threshold
- 3:14of your subconscious awareness. The word
- 3:16itself comes from the Latin sub, meaning
- 3:19below, and limen, meaning threshold.
- 3:22When we're talking about subliminal
- 3:23audio, we're also talking about
- 3:24affirmations or messages that have been
- 3:27recorded and then layered underneath
- 3:29music or ambient sound or frequencies at
- 3:33a volume that your conscious mind cannot
- 3:36hear. So, when you come across a
- 3:37subliminal, you press play, and you
- 3:39might hear some rain sounds or lo-fi
- 3:41music, but underneath that, there can be
- 3:43statements like, "I am confident. I am
- 3:46worthy of love. I attract abundance."
- 3:48All playing at a level that your ears
- 3:50technically receive, but your conscious
- 3:52brain doesn't register. So, why does
- 3:55this have to be subliminal? Your
- 3:57conscious mind processes 40 to 50 bits
- 3:59of information per second. This may
- 4:02sound like a lot until you learn that
- 4:04your subconscious mind processes
- 4:06approximately 11 million bits per
- 4:08second. Let that sink in for a bit. Your
- 4:10subconscious is doing super heavy
- 4:13lifting of your entire existence, and
- 4:15you barely even get access to it. So,
- 4:17the theory behind subliminals is that if
- 4:19you can deliver all these positive
- 4:20affirmations directly into your
- 4:22subconscious mind, you bypass the
- 4:25critical filter of your conscious brain,
- 4:26where you may be thinking things like,
- 4:28"I know that's not true. I'm not
- 4:30actually confident. Why are we lying?"
- 4:32So that those affirmations can rewire
- 4:35your neural pathways through
- 4:36neuroplasticity. Your brain literally
- 4:39forms new connections based on repeated
- 4:41input at the subliminal level without
- 4:42your conscious resistance getting in the
- 4:44way. This is why subliminals are so
- 4:47popular for anything related to
- 4:49self-improvement, working on your
- 4:50self-concept, your physical appearance,
- 4:53money, relationships, weight loss,
- 4:54career success, all of it. Others claim
- 4:57that it can even do things like change
- 4:59your height, your eye color. I would
- 5:02love to hear from you guys in the
- 5:03comments if you think that's actually
- 5:05effective or not, because I do believe
- 5:07in the power of our minds to change our
- 5:09lives radically, which is why I'm
- 5:11working on creating my own collection of
- 5:12subliminals, meditations, and
- 5:14frequencies with all kinds of positive
- 5:17affirmations. It's all going to be part
- 5:18of my Stoic Angels membership 2.0. If
- 5:20you're interested, you can sign up for
- 5:22the waitlist in my description box. But
- 5:24overall, we still need to understand the
- 5:27full picture before we come into any
- 5:29judgment, because the history of
- 5:30subliminal messages goes way deeper than
- 5:34this. The history of hacking your
- 5:36subconscious mind didn't begin with
- 5:38subliminal creators on the internet, of
- 5:40course. There was historical evidence in
- 5:42the 5th century BC suggesting that Greek
- 5:44philosophers, specifically from the
- 5:46school of sophism, believe there is no
- 5:48absolute truth and truth is created from
- 5:50persuasion and influence. But,
- 5:53subliminal theory was applied by one man
- 5:56100 years ago. His name was Edward
- 5:57Bernays. He is known as the father of
- 5:59PR, public relations, and modern-day
- 6:02advertising. Think slogans from brands
- 6:04that you remember, logos, annoying
- 6:06jingles that get stuck in your head, all
- 6:08came from this man's work. But, what
- 6:10most people don't know is that he was
- 6:12also the nephew of Sigmund Freud, the
- 6:14father of psychoanalysis. He took his
- 6:17uncle's theories about this unconscious
- 6:19mind and weaponized it for advertising.
- 6:21For example, manufacturing the idea of
- 6:23smoking in public is a feminist movement
- 6:26to boost tobacco sales amongst women. He
- 6:28went on to also work for major
- 6:30corporations and even with presidents to
- 6:33manipulate the masses. So, if Bernays
- 6:36was the precursor who proved your
- 6:37subconscious is easily influenced, he
- 6:39used it for capitalism. And then, in
- 6:421957, a market researcher named James
- 6:45Vicary took that concept somewhere even
- 6:47more unsettling. Vicary claimed that he
- 6:50ran a 6-week experiment at a movie
- 6:52theater in New Jersey, where he flashed
- 6:55"Eat popcorn and drink Coca-Cola" on the
- 6:57screen for 1/3,000 of a second, which is
- 7:00way too fast for anyone to consciously
- 7:02see. He said his subliminal advertising
- 7:05resulted in an increase of popcorn sales
- 7:08by 57%
- 7:10and Coke sales by 18%. The world lost
- 7:14its mind. Governments started banning
- 7:16subliminal ads. The CIA wrote an
- 7:19internal report about it. This fear of
- 7:22subliminal control was headline news all
- 7:24over, and Vicary became the origin story
- 7:28of subliminals as a concept. He's the
- 7:31reason why the word subliminal is part
- 7:33of our mainstream vocabulary. But,
- 7:34here's the plot twist. A few years
- 7:36later, Vicary admitted the whole story
- 7:39was made up to promote his failing
- 7:41marketing firm. It was a lie, but by
- 7:44then it didn't even matter. The idea had
- 7:46already taken place and this man's fake
- 7:48news actually inspired decades of real
- 7:51scientific research into how subliminal
- 7:53perception actually [music] works
- 7:55because that hypothesis had already
- 7:58existed way before this fake news story.
- 8:01But this origin basically influenced how
- 8:03we see subliminals today. MK Ultra when
- 8:07governments got involved. Very quickly,
- 8:09I want to touch on government programs
- 8:11because around the same time in 1953,
- 8:14the CIA had launched MK Ultra which was
- 8:16a top secret research program exploring
- 8:19methods of mind control. Experiments
- 8:21involving psychedelics administered to
- 8:23people without their knowledge or
- 8:24consent, hypnosis, sensory deprivation,
- 8:27electroshock therapy, and most of all,
- 8:29subliminal messaging techniques. The
- 8:32program ran for roughly two decades
- 8:33before it was exposed in the 70s in
- 8:36Congress, but much of the documentation
- 8:38had already been destroyed by then.
- 8:39[music]
- 8:40However, there are some documents that
- 8:42survived in declassified files that we
- 8:44can still find today on the CIA website.
- 8:47Now, I'm not getting to conspiracy
- 8:49territory because these experiments
- 8:50actually really did happen for decades,
- 8:53which tells us two things. One, the
- 8:56subconscious mind is so powerful that a
- 8:58secret government program was built
- 9:00around studying the manipulation of it.
- 9:02And second, the tools of subconscious
- 9:05influence can either be used ethically
- 9:07or unethically, which matters a lot
- 9:09because this means your awareness of how
- 9:11they work is absolutely for your own
- 9:14protection. Since then, subliminal
- 9:16messaging has shown up everywhere in
- 9:18advertising and political campaigns,
- 9:20even in children's media. Music videos
- 9:22too are in itself a very powerful
- 9:24subliminal tool combining both visuals
- 9:27and audio that invokes strong emotional
- 9:30resonance from the viewer. There was a
- 9:32Judas Priest trial in the 90s where the
- 9:34band was accused of embedding the phrase
- 9:36do it in one of their songs. Eventually,
- 9:39the case was dismissed because they
- 9:41couldn't prove anything, and this is a
- 9:43whole rabbit hole going all the way back
- 9:45to the Beatles. And think about which
- 9:47era the Beatles comes from. If you have
- 9:49the time, look up the track "Revolution
- 9:519" by the Beatles and listen for
- 9:52yourself. They might be one of the first
- 9:55instances of subliminal loops existing
- 9:57in modern-day pop music. When I was in
- 10:00school, my professor, who was an
- 10:02illustrator, had a lot of these stories.
- 10:04One of them he admitted that a part of
- 10:06his job at a very famous superhero comic
- 10:08book brand, which I won't name, was to
- 10:10insert specific types of subliminal
- 10:13imagery in his art. And then he just
- 10:15started kind of doing it for fun, like,
- 10:17"Haha, let's draw a private part here,
- 10:19and nobody will ever know." But
- 10:20technically speaking, although the FCC
- 10:23discourages subliminal advertising, they
- 10:24never actually banned [music] it. Since
- 10:27then, modern science has taken a more
- 10:28nuanced look at it, and what researchers
- 10:30have found is way more interesting than
- 10:32the binary question of do subliminals
- 10:35work or not? What does the science
- 10:37actually say? I'm going to give you the
- 10:39real science behind subliminals because
- 10:41a lot of the content you see online is
- 10:42either this will change your entire face
- 10:44structure overnight or it's
- 10:46pseudoscience garbage. So, let's look at
- 10:49these studies and see what's for real. I
- 10:51found a 2007 study done where students
- 10:54were subliminally exposed to words
- 10:56related to intelligence right before a
- 10:58practice exam, and they actually
- 10:59performed better in the real midterm
- 11:02about 4 days later. Researchers at Yale
- 11:05also found that older individuals who
- 11:06were subliminally exposed to positive
- 11:08stereotypes about aging showed
- 11:10measurably improved physical functioning
- 11:12that lasts for several weeks. There were
- 11:14also brain imaging studies from 2010
- 11:17through 2015 that have also shown that
- 11:18subliminal stimuli produce measurable
- 11:21changes in the amygdala, which processes
- 11:23your emotions, the insula, involved in
- 11:25conscious awareness, the hippocampus,
- 11:28which handles memory, and the visual
- 11:30cortex. Your brain literally responds to
- 11:33information that you didn't consciously
- 11:35know you received. The fourth study that
- 11:37I'm referencing is led by Professor
- 11:39Nilli Lavie at University College of
- 11:41London, which demonstrated that people
- 11:43can process emotional information from
- 11:45subliminal images. That research itself
- 11:48showed that negative subliminal messages
- 11:50were actually processed more effectively
- 11:53than positive ones, which by the way is
- 11:56very important for how you choose your
- 11:58subliminals, which we'll get to very
- 12:00shortly. Here's the nuance though, a
- 12:02study by Karamans and colleagues found
- 12:04that subliminal brand priming only
- 12:06influenced people's choices when they
- 12:08were already motivated in that
- 12:09direction. So, subliminal exposure to
- 12:12Lipton iced tea only made thirsty people
- 12:15even more likely to choose that brand,
- 12:17but it actually had no effect on people
- 12:19who weren't even thirsty. This is what
- 12:22most subliminal creators online ignore.
- 12:24Subliminals appear to amplify existing
- 12:27motivation and prime existing neural
- 12:30networks. They don't actually appear to
- 12:32override someone else's free will or
- 12:35create desire from nothing. They work
- 12:37with what's already inside of you and
- 12:39not against it. And that, my angels, is
- 12:42actually the key to using them
- 12:44correctly. So, how do we listen to
- 12:46subliminals the correct way? I call this
- 12:48the align method because subliminals
- 12:50aren't magic, but it isn't nonsense
- 12:52either. It is a tool, and just like any
- 12:55other tool, you use it to build what you
- 12:57want. A, audit your affirmations. Before
- 13:01you press play on any subliminal, you
- 13:03need to know exactly what affirmations
- 13:06were embedded in that [music] audio. And
- 13:07I cannot stress this enough. Most people
- 13:09download subliminals from random YouTube
- 13:11videos or SoundCloud accounts, and they
- 13:13have no idea what messages they're
- 13:15actually absorbing into their
- 13:17subconscious. Would you take a pill
- 13:19without knowing what's in it? So, look
- 13:21for creators who list their
- 13:23affirmations. Make sure it's someone
- 13:24that you trust, and pay attention to the
- 13:26construction of those affirmations. This
- 13:29matters a lot more than you think. For
- 13:31example, an effective subliminal
- 13:34affirmation should be [music] in present
- 13:36tense. I am confident, not I will be
- 13:39confident. Your subconscious does not
- 13:42understand future tense the same way. It
- 13:45will more likely think I will be as in I
- 13:48am not yet. And make sure that it is
- 13:49positively framed as well, like I am
- 13:52calm and centered, not I am not anxious.
- 13:55Again, that's another thing that your
- 13:56subconscious mind struggles to
- 13:58understand. It can't really progress
- 14:00negation. So, when you're saying not
- 14:03anxious, the image that your brain
- 14:05creates is still anxious. So, make sure
- 14:08it resonates with you emotionally as
- 14:10well because generic affirmations will
- 14:13produce generic results. So, something
- 14:15specific like I radiate magnetic
- 14:18confidence and people are naturally
- 14:20drawn to my energy is so much better
- 14:23than I am confident. L, limit your
- 14:26focus. Another big mistake I see is
- 14:29people are running six different
- 14:31subliminal playlists at the same time
- 14:32and then they're wondering why nothing
- 14:34works. Just because your subconscious
- 14:36mind can process a lot doesn't mean the
- 14:38messages can't get muddy if you play a
- 14:40bunch of them together. So, think about
- 14:42it like this. If you went to the gym and
- 14:43you tried to fit every single machine
- 14:45into one workout at once, you wouldn't
- 14:47get stronger. You would just be tired
- 14:49and worn out with no targeted progress.
- 14:52Your mind is the same way. So, pick a
- 14:54couple of areas to start with, max, and
- 14:56run those subliminals consistently at
- 14:58least a few weeks before you add
- 15:01anything else. Your subconscious needs
- 15:03focus, repeated input to form new neural
- 15:05pathways. So, unfocused input will
- 15:07create unfocused results. I, integrate
- 15:11consciously. This may be the reason why
- 15:14subliminals don't work for most
- 15:15listeners because subliminals are not a
- 15:17replacement for conscious inner work. It
- 15:20It a supplement. Basically, it's like a
- 15:21booster, if you will. Like, if you're
- 15:23listening to a subconscious subliminal
- 15:25that says, "I am worthy of love," but
- 15:27you spend the rest of your day in a
- 15:28thought loop of nobody will ever love
- 15:29me, you're creating a war inside your
- 15:32nervous system. The subliminal is saying
- 15:34one thing, your conscious mind saying
- 15:35another, and your subconscious will
- 15:38always prioritize the louder and more
- 15:40emotionally charged input, which is
- 15:42usually the negative thing. Which is why
- 15:44we have to carefully manage our
- 15:47emotions, or else they will spill
- 15:49everywhere and create messes that nobody
- 15:51wants. So, here's how integration can
- 15:53look like in practice. When you're
- 15:55listening to a subliminal in the
- 15:56morning, spend 3 minutes afterwards in
- 15:58silence. Place your hand on your chest
- 16:01and consciously repeat the same
- 16:02affirmations from the subliminal to
- 16:04yourself and really feel it. Let your
- 16:06body respond to it and notice where any
- 16:09resistance comes up and breathe into it
- 16:12instead of pushing it away. During the
- 16:14day, try and catch yourself when your
- 16:17thoughts contradict your subliminal
- 16:18work. You don't have to force being
- 16:20positive. Just notice, like, "Oh, I'm
- 16:22telling myself that again. I've been
- 16:24trying to rewire that thought." Try and
- 16:26build more awareness without judgment.
- 16:29So, your subliminal is the seed, your
- 16:31conscious awareness is like the water.
- 16:33So, without both, nothing grows. G,
- 16:35guard your state. When you listen
- 16:38matters almost as much as what you
- 16:40listen to. The reason why subliminal
- 16:42creators recommend listening during
- 16:43sleep or right before bedtime is because
- 16:46your brain transitions through specific
- 16:49states of consciousness. During the day,
- 16:51you're primarily in beta state. You're
- 16:53alert, analytical, you may be critical,
- 16:55and this is when your conscious filter
- 16:57is the strongest. So, your subconscious
- 16:59is way harder to access during the day,
- 17:02but as you relax towards sleep, your
- 17:04brain moves into alpha and then theta
- 17:07states. And these are the states where
- 17:08your subconscious is the most receptive.
- 17:10Your critical filter relaxes, new
- 17:12information can be absorbed with less
- 17:14resistance. So, the optimal listening
- 17:17windows are right when you wake up,
- 17:19before you check your phone, before your
- 17:21conscious mind fully activates in the
- 17:23morning, and you're still in that
- 17:24liminal mental state, and also right
- 17:26before you fall asleep. Lastly, during
- 17:29meditation or deep relaxation. So, any
- 17:32kind of practice that shifts you out of
- 17:34analytical beta state and into a more
- 17:37receptive brainwave pattern. You want to
- 17:39avoid listening to subliminals while
- 17:41you're stressed, anxious, feeling
- 17:43obsessed or worried, scrolling social
- 17:45media, or when you're in an reactive
- 17:47emotional state. When your nervous
- 17:49system is activated, your subconscious
- 17:51mind is actively trying to protect you.
- 17:53So, it's not in reception mode right
- 17:54now. If anything, you want to take care
- 17:57of your stressful emotional state first
- 17:59before listening to subliminals. Lastly,
- 18:02and neutralize resistance. If you start
- 18:05listening to subliminals and you notice
- 18:07increased anxiety, vivid dreams,
- 18:09emotional purging, you get irritated, or
- 18:12old memories start resurfacing, don't
- 18:14panic and don't stop because what you're
- 18:16experiencing is what I call a
- 18:18subconscious detox. When new programming
- 18:20meets old programming, sometimes there's
- 18:22friction. [music] Your subconscious has
- 18:24been running the same story in your head
- 18:26for years, maybe even decades. Things
- 18:29like, "I'm not enough. I'm not worthy. I
- 18:31can't have what I want." So, when a
- 18:32subliminal starts introducing the
- 18:34opposite, your subconscious mind might
- 18:36actually try and resist it or, you know,
- 18:39it might even try and test you. This is
- 18:41actually a sign that your subliminals
- 18:43are working discomfort is your old
- 18:46identity trying to maintain itself. The
- 18:48way through this is not to double down
- 18:50at even more subliminals or listen even
- 18:53harder, force yourself to be positive,
- 18:55but let the emotions move through you,
- 18:57journal it, channel it out, cry if you
- 18:59have to. And you need to release that
- 19:01emotion. Take walks, talk to someone you
- 19:03trust, talk to your therapist about it,
- 19:05and let your nervous system process
- 19:07what's being reorganized. I went through
- 19:10all of this myself when I first started
- 19:12using subliminals consistently about 2
- 19:14weeks in, I started to hit a wall and I
- 19:16felt more emotional than I have been in
- 19:19months. So, old insecurities that I
- 19:21thought I dealt with came right back to
- 19:23the surface and I remember just sitting
- 19:24in my bathroom floor at midnight
- 19:25thinking, "Oh my god, why am I getting
- 19:27worse?" But, I didn't give up and I just
- 19:30kept going. About a week after that, I
- 19:32forgot any of that even happened because
- 19:34I got through it. My thoughts are
- 19:36softer, I was much calmer, so it helps a
- 19:39lot to notice when you start to see that
- 19:41change as you let go of your old
- 19:43narratives. And that's the thing about
- 19:45subliminals, the changes itself can be
- 19:47very subtle, but eventually it is a
- 19:49very, very powerful tool to change your
- 19:52entire trajectory. This is why I've been
- 19:55working on creating my own subliminal
- 19:57collection and sharing it with my
- 19:59members. My waitlist is going to be in
- 20:01the description box and I'm still
- 20:02working on it, but it will be done very
- 20:04soon because I want to make sure we do
- 20:06this right, that there's nothing
- 20:08negative hidden in the messaging, it's
- 20:10made correctly, it's effective, and then
- 20:12eventually, not just testing it on
- 20:14myself, but also people who want to be
- 20:17my test subjects. So, if you're
- 20:18interested in learning more about
- 20:19subliminals, I want to know because I'm
- 20:22thinking about doing a part two of this
- 20:23video that goes into specific types of
- 20:25subliminals, what different frequencies
- 20:27will do for you. And if you want to plan
- 20:29out your own practice beyond just
- 20:31listening to a YouTube video, I made my
- 20:33PDF guide for you and it's free to
- 20:35download, so check it out if you haven't
- 20:36already. And if you're interested in
- 20:38learning more, make sure you sub-
- 20:40scribed. Every video in my channel is
- 20:41designed to give you one more tool for
- 20:43the ideal life that you're building,
- 20:45whether that's physical, mental, or
- 20:46spiritual. And remember, angels, your
- 20:48growth isn't something that just happens
- 20:50to you randomly, you have to be the
- 20:52active operant power of your life every
- 20:55single day. And today, you showed up,
- 20:57you learned about a new tool which
- 20:59really counts, and if nobody else has
- 21:00told you this today, I love you, I
- 21:02believe in you, angel, and I will see
- 21:04you in the next video.
