- 0:02Welcome back to the interior design
- 0:04playbook. We have reached lesson five of
- 0:06module one where the focus is going to
- 0:08be streamlining sections and elevations.
- 0:10Two of the most important and
- 0:11timeconuming drawings in your set. In
- 0:13our last lesson, we created lighting and
- 0:15power plans and learned how to draw them
- 0:17faster, present them clearly as both
- 0:19client-friendly and construction ready
- 0:21documentation. Today we're shifting to
- 0:23sections and elevations. We will cover
- 0:24the fundamentals like choosing the right
- 0:26section cut and dive deeper into
- 0:27practical tips like line weights,
- 0:29material representation, annotations,
- 0:31and more. As always, I'll be showing you
- 0:33how to do all of this right within Rayon
- 0:34Design. With the wall tool, style
- 0:36presets, and a massive block library
- 0:38with a readytouse side views, we'll be
- 0:40able to work twice as fast on these
- 0:42sections and elevations compared to
- 0:43other CAD tools. By the end of this
- 0:45lesson, you will know how to create
- 0:46clear, consistent, and professional
- 0:48quality sections and elevations that
- 0:50convey your design intent. If you'd like
- 0:51to follow along with me, you can always
- 0:53create a free account and download the
- 0:55template linked below. And if you're
- 0:56looking for more personalized support,
- 0:57you can always book a one-on-one demo
- 0:59session with the Rayon team. If you're
- 1:00finding this series useful, please make
- 1:02sure to like, subscribe, and comment
- 1:04with any of your takeaways. I'd love to
- 1:06hear how you're using this workflow on
- 1:07your own projects. Let's get into it.
- 1:09So, what are the section and elevations
- 1:11purpose? Well, sections and elevations
- 1:14are 2D architectural drawings that
- 1:15reveal a building's vertical aspects
- 1:18either by slicing through it like in our
- 1:20sections or showing it from the outside.
- 1:22So, elevations, so think like head-on
- 1:23view of the outside. They are essential
- 1:25for communicating spatial relationships,
- 1:28materials, and structure. And they are
- 1:30actually required in almost every
- 1:32drawing set, whether you're working on
- 1:33renovations, new builds, or anything
- 1:36else. Now, since we are doing a heavy
- 1:38focus on the interior, um we won't be
- 1:40too focused on elevations, but I will
- 1:42show you how you can create an elevation
- 1:44from a section that you've already
- 1:45drawn. But our main focus here is going
- 1:48to be in the sections. So, in this
- 1:49tutorial, I will start by drawing a
- 1:51section from scratch um using uh our
- 1:54floor plan. So, using this floor plan
- 1:56that we've already created. Just a side
- 1:58note though, for those of you using
- 2:00Rayon as part of a 2D to 3D workflow,
- 2:03you can actually import DWG PDF or
- 2:06images of your rough sections onto the
- 2:09Rayon canvas to complete them and make
- 2:11them presentation ready. So, now that
- 2:14we've got that past us, let's talk about
- 2:16how to create a section. And we will
- 2:18start by organizing our file because
- 2:20that is just the best way to work in
- 2:22Rayon. I am working in our drawing
- 2:24template right here. So, I already have
- 2:26a section and elevation canvas set up.
- 2:28If you are starting in a blank rayon
- 2:31file, you can just hit the plus button
- 2:32here and create a new model canvas. And
- 2:34then that's where you can um name it
- 2:37your section and elevation canvas. So,
- 2:39since I have this section and elevation
- 2:40canvas set up right here, I'm just going
- 2:42to go right in there. And before we do
- 2:44anything, we're going to start by
- 2:45setting up a layer called section. So,
- 2:47you'll just go to the plus button, hit
- 2:49layer, and then call that sections. And
- 2:52then inside of it, uh, we are going to
- 2:55add a nested guidelines layer. So, what
- 2:58this is going to do is this will allow
- 2:59us to create some guidelines for some of
- 3:02our like different heights of things
- 3:04like for instance the floor, the
- 3:06ceiling, the window sill. And by putting
- 3:09these on their own layer, it will just
- 3:10make it easy for us to like lock it or
- 3:12hide it layers later. So, we'll go plus
- 3:15layer and we'll just call that
- 3:16guidelines. And then we will just drag
- 3:18that guidelines under our sections. And
- 3:20then you can see here we've got that
- 3:22right here. We've got guidelines under
- 3:24sections. And now before we start
- 3:25drawing anything, we do need to bring
- 3:27our floor plan in to guide us. That's
- 3:29usually the easiest way to start drawing
- 3:32in section elevation is we need to
- 3:33figure out like where on this floor plan
- 3:35are we looking. So um we will bring
- 3:37right into here, right into this uh
- 3:39model canvas that we're working. We'll
- 3:41hit the plus button and we'll go to view
- 3:42and we'll just bring in our floor plan
- 3:44view. Now this is not an editable floor
- 3:48plan or anything. And you can see it
- 3:49brought in like pretty much all my
- 3:50layers. All it is is basically just a
- 3:52reference point for me to start drawing.
- 3:54So before we do anything, we need to
- 3:56make sure that it is to a 1:1 scale. So
- 3:59basically for us in the US, uh 12 in
- 4:02equals 1 ft. Um if you're using meters,
- 4:06it would just be a 1 one scale. So I am
- 4:09going to hold down my command key and
- 4:11just kind of scrunch this in a little
- 4:13bit. And what we want to do is determine
- 4:15where our section is going to cut first.
- 4:17Um, so again, since we are like heavily
- 4:20focused on interiors in this course, I'm
- 4:23thinking that we could either do we
- 4:25could either do a long slice along here
- 4:28or just to keep things a little bit more
- 4:30simple and streamlined, we could just do
- 4:32a little slice through this more narrow
- 4:35area and then um you can tackle one of
- 4:37these longer spaces on your own. So, I'm
- 4:40thinking that we will probably slice
- 4:42right through here, maybe right behind
- 4:44this table, and then look towards this
- 4:46little kitchenette. So, if we want to,
- 4:49we could just start by adding in a
- 4:51little section cut like annotation
- 4:54basically for ourselves. Uh, eventually
- 4:56we might want to create a section cut
- 4:59like on our actual floor plan, but for
- 5:00right now, to kind of initially indicate
- 5:03where our section cut is going to take
- 5:04place, I'm just going to draw like a
- 5:06little guideline basically. um so we can
- 5:09understand where exactly we'll be
- 5:11cutting this. So for instance, I'm
- 5:12thinking right about here. And then I'm
- 5:15also thinking maybe we are looking this
- 5:18way. So if you wanted to, you could
- 5:20always go over to the block library
- 5:22where Rayon has over 10,000 blocks and
- 5:26um download some sort of section uh cut
- 5:29type of thing. Now this is this floor
- 5:33plan in here is really just for our
- 5:34reference only right now. Um, so this I
- 5:37mean I don't necessarily need to be uh
- 5:39getting this in here right now, but if
- 5:41we wanted to, we could just kind of like
- 5:44add in this little section um to kind of
- 5:49just remind us where we are cutting. I'm
- 5:52basically just placing it and mirroring
- 5:54it. So using my little mirror tool over
- 5:56here. And now this is just going to
- 5:58remind us where exactly we're cutting.
- 6:01First things first, I'm going to
- 6:03actually
- 6:05this this is just kind of like my
- 6:06reference guide over here, right? Okay.
- 6:08So, I'm just going to copy and paste
- 6:10this. And now I'm going to actually
- 6:12rotate the entire floor plan and use my
- 6:15command key to kind of like chop where
- 6:19we're looking. Now, in our actual
- 6:22drawing set, if we go back to our uh
- 6:27presentation canvas, you can see in
- 6:28these sections here, you see the cut of
- 6:31the section. This is pretty much where
- 6:32we're cutting through. Uh but then you
- 6:34also see the house behind and the house
- 6:36beyond. Most of the time, you're not
- 6:38going to necessarily need to model in
- 6:40that exterior of the house for an
- 6:43interior plan, but like I said, I will
- 6:45show you kind of how to develop those.
- 6:46But for this lesson, we're just going to
- 6:48focus on this little chunk right here
- 6:50because that's usually what we're going
- 6:52to be dealing with as interior
- 6:53designers. So, going back to our section
- 6:55and elevation canvas here. Uh, again,
- 6:57I'm just kind of like chopping this area
- 7:01to what we're going to be seeing.
- 7:04So, this is kind of where I'm going to
- 7:07be standing looking toward this
- 7:10kitchenet. Um, so again, just kind of
- 7:13chop this in here. And now that's just
- 7:14like a little bit more manageable for me
- 7:16to understand. Um, when you are choosing
- 7:19uh your section cut, you just want to
- 7:21make sure that you choose something that
- 7:24is going to convey multiple rooms, cut
- 7:26through multiple doors, multiple
- 7:27windows. Um, and this is really going to
- 7:29help explain the relationship between
- 7:31different spaces. Now, for instance,
- 7:33this one that we're focusing on, again,
- 7:34this is kind of more of like a consolid
- 7:36like a more of like a intimate space
- 7:38just for teaching purposes, just to not
- 7:40like overwhelm you. But you should be
- 7:42able to take what I'm teaching here and
- 7:44apply that to any other section cuts
- 7:46that you do. So, this section cut is a
- 7:48little bit more simple just for the
- 7:50demonstration. Again, if you wanted to
- 7:52go grab a section symbol or something
- 7:54like that from the block library, you
- 7:56are welcome to. Um, but we're not,
- 7:58again, we're just using this floor plan
- 8:00as our reference for right now. Um, the
- 8:02section cut wouldn't necessarily need to
- 8:04be shown on this model canvas, but maybe
- 8:06on our floor plan canvas um when we are
- 8:09presenting it later. But let's go ahead
- 8:11and start by uh creating a grid. So uh
- 8:16again, I just kind of like duplicated
- 8:17the floor plan, rotated it, cropped it,
- 8:20and then using some guidelines, it's
- 8:22going to anchor our different elements,
- 8:24like I said, like floors, ceiling
- 8:26heights, furniture, structure, and we
- 8:29can also color code them to help the
- 8:31grid be more like readable as we place
- 8:33our walls and our furniture, um and that
- 8:35kind of thing. So, let's go ahead and
- 8:37get started with that. So, all I'm doing
- 8:38is uh grabbing my line tool right here,
- 8:41and I'm just going to start uh kind of
- 8:45snapping to different items. So, I'm
- 8:49going to start by drawing my a grid line
- 8:51over here. And again, with the color
- 8:53coding, uh let's go ahead and make a new
- 8:56style. I'm going to uh come over here,
- 8:59and that looks good. Let's go ahead and
- 9:02make this one a red uh line. And this
- 9:05will be kind of like walls that we cut
- 9:07through. Um, so we've got that. We've
- 9:11got
- 9:12uh again, we will snap this one to this
- 9:15wall.
- 9:17And then we're going to be cutting
- 9:18through these walls as well. So I'm
- 9:21going to draw these guidelines over
- 9:22here. Um, just place them in the right
- 9:26spot. Uh, we should be making sure that
- 9:28we're drawing on our guidelines. Uh,
- 9:31which we are, which is good. I'm going
- 9:33to just kind of snap that up there. And
- 9:36so these red lines are now the start of
- 9:39our section. Just kind of like showing
- 9:42which walls we're cutting through. Next,
- 9:45I might want to add like a ground plane
- 9:48line. You are welcome to make this one a
- 9:50different color. We'll just leave it at
- 9:52um black because basically what we're
- 9:53going to end up doing is tracing over
- 9:55these guidelines with actual like walls
- 9:58and fills. So again, these are literally
- 10:01just kind of like starting our grid. So
- 10:05next up, I'm going to create another
- 10:07line and I'll go over here and maybe
- 10:10this one will be green. And this will
- 10:12just be uh walls that we see beyond. So
- 10:16I'm going to just hold down my shift key
- 10:18to make sure that these stay straight.
- 10:21And grab another line. Looks like we can
- 10:25see this wall beyond
- 10:31and we'll copy this whole thing because
- 10:34the same situation happens over here.
- 10:37So, we'll kind of like link that up to
- 10:39this wall.
- 10:41And now you can start to see that we're,
- 10:43you know, we've got these walls, these
- 10:45walls, we've got our ground plane, and
- 10:47then let's just see like what else we
- 10:49can see in elevation that we might want
- 10:51to block out. Like if there's any doors
- 10:53beyond, for instance. Looks like there's
- 10:55an opening beyond here. So maybe we want
- 10:58to make a different style for our
- 10:59opening. So maybe openings are going to
- 11:02be blue. So I'm going to draw my line
- 11:04from here to here. And we're just
- 11:07basically setting ourselves up for
- 11:09success later on when we want to start
- 11:11placing blocks. You're going to have all
- 11:12of your grid lines nice and set up so
- 11:14you can see, you know, where uh to place
- 11:17those.
- 11:19Um you can also do the same thing for
- 11:20any furniture. I'm just going to kind of
- 11:22eyeball that, I think. So, looks like we
- 11:25kind of have like a pretty decent setup
- 11:27here. Now, next up, you would probably
- 11:29want to uh draw your like the height of
- 11:33your ceiling. So, I have a few uh
- 11:36dimensions here. So, we've got our our
- 11:40kitchenet height is at 7'6.
- 11:43So, I'll basically go 7 foot 6 in and
- 11:46then
- 11:48dock my line there.
- 11:51Then draw another grid line this way. My
- 11:53next elevation height that I need to put
- 11:56on here is uh basically the bottom of
- 11:59the pitched roof. So like the eve
- 12:01height. And then um I've also got my
- 12:04like the top of the uh pitched roof as
- 12:07well. So we'll add those in. So let's
- 12:10again click align and we're going to go
- 12:12from our ground level and we'll say 11'
- 12:146 in. And then snap that there.
- 12:21And these can be like somewhat messy
- 12:22because again they're basically just our
- 12:25guides. Um, and then our last height is
- 12:2817t 3 in. So 17t 3 in. And we'll plop
- 12:34that there. Draw our last grid line
- 12:36here.
- 12:40So now what we can do is just kind of
- 12:42like start tracing the exterior so we
- 12:45have kind of like so then we can like
- 12:46kind of work inwards. I'm going to start
- 12:48by just grabbing a polyline because I
- 12:50want to be able to select multiple
- 12:52times. Um, again, this is just a
- 12:53guideline. So, um, I'm going to make
- 12:56this like pretty thick just so I can see
- 12:58it. You can always save that style if
- 13:00you'd like. Um, and I'm just going to
- 13:02start tracing this. So, this is my
- 13:04exterior wall. Basically, this is my eve
- 13:06height. I know that I have to I'm going
- 13:10to have to like snap I'm going to have
- 13:11to find my middle here. Um, which I have
- 13:13not done yet, but we can always move
- 13:15that. Um, basically there. And then
- 13:18we're going to snap to the exterior
- 13:19again. Exterior. And there we go. So now
- 13:24let's just go in here really quick and
- 13:25figure out what our center line is. Um,
- 13:28I'm going to grab a line. And
- 13:32we should be able to find the center
- 13:33line from one of these walls. So like
- 13:37right there.
- 13:39Okay. So obviously I was off a little
- 13:41bit, but um, no problem. And we can just
- 13:43double click into that polyline and just
- 13:44move that verticy right over there so
- 13:46it's nice and centered. Now you can keep
- 13:48that line if you want. I'm just going to
- 13:49delete it. So that's basically the
- 13:51outline of this section. Right. So now
- 13:55what we need to do is use our wall tool
- 13:58to
- 14:00indicate the actual cutthroughs of the
- 14:03wall. So one of the reasons that drawing
- 14:05a section with rayon is so much faster
- 14:07is that it's incredibly responsive. like
- 14:09you just draw it and then it
- 14:10automatically applies a wall thickness
- 14:12and fill which you can edit later from
- 14:14the style planner. So, we'll go down
- 14:16here and grab our wall tool. Um, I'm
- 14:19going to actually also just start
- 14:21drawing in my uh section layer instead
- 14:24of my guidelines now because the
- 14:26guidelines I want to be able to turn on
- 14:27and off like so. Under our sections,
- 14:30we're just going to grab our wall tool
- 14:32and basically start um drawing a wall
- 14:34here. And now that since we have our
- 14:36guidelines, we can just kind of like
- 14:37snap to those guidelines, which is
- 14:39really helpful. Um, so we can see that
- 14:41this wall is um the wrong size, we need
- 14:44it to be a little bit thicker. We need
- 14:45it to be, let's do a measurement here
- 14:47real quick.
- 14:51It should be, let's see here, 11 12 in.
- 14:54So over here, we'll give it an 11 and
- 14:571/2 in thickness. So 11.5 in. And then
- 15:00if you want to change the fill, the
- 15:02color, um the stroke, anything like
- 15:04that, you can do that. And once you have
- 15:06the size that you want it to be, you can
- 15:09just hit plus and then say like exterior
- 15:11wall. And then that will save that into
- 15:14your style library. So again, we want to
- 15:18draw that same thing over here.
- 15:22Going to click there and there. And now
- 15:24we have our two exterior walls. Also,
- 15:27it's pretty standard to create or to
- 15:30make a wall cut through like black or to
- 15:33even show like some sort of insulation,
- 15:35which uh you can also easily do that by
- 15:38just creating a line right here. And
- 15:41then within this stroke over here under
- 15:45add dash, they do have
- 15:48like a little batting right there. So,
- 15:51um you can do that and then change the
- 15:52size of course. Uh maybe a little bit
- 15:55bigger than that. like that if you
- 15:57wanted to show more detail of the wall.
- 16:01Again, we'll just keep it simple for now
- 16:02and turn that off. So, then you can grab
- 16:05your wall tool again to uh kind of like
- 16:08create your roof line. And if you want
- 16:11to, you can select these walls and make
- 16:13them like a little bit less thick. Maybe
- 16:16uh closer to 6 in or something like
- 16:18that. Again, if you want to save that
- 16:20wall type and maybe that's like your
- 16:21roof wall or something like that, then
- 16:24you can do that. But you can see how
- 16:25easy that is to adjust sizes of
- 16:28everything in here. We will also draw
- 16:31ourselves a nice little floor right
- 16:33here. And I'm just going to keep it as
- 16:35that current wall type, the exterior
- 16:37wall type that I have. And now it's
- 16:39looking like an actual house. So then
- 16:42you would just basically continue by
- 16:43tracing. So um again, grab your wall
- 16:46tool and trace this interior line. Now
- 16:48this wall is much uh less thick. Let's
- 16:52do a little dimension here to see how
- 16:54thick. So, 4 and 1/2 in. So, maybe this
- 16:58wall, maybe we want this wall to be like
- 17:01a white color. And it obviously needs to
- 17:03be closer to 4 and 1/2 in. And just kind
- 17:08of like drag that up to kind of mesh
- 17:10into the ceiling and the um floor. And
- 17:15then rinse and repeat. So, we'll make
- 17:17sure that we'll go back here and we'll
- 17:19save this style as interior wall.
- 17:23And then we can grab our wall tool again
- 17:26and just do that same thing. Just make
- 17:28sure that we have our interior wall. I'm
- 17:30going to pick our style here and draw
- 17:33that right there. So, this is just the
- 17:36process that you would continue. And
- 17:38then again, the nice thing is that yes,
- 17:40a lot of this is like more work on the
- 17:44front end, but once you set up like
- 17:45typical interior walls and exterior
- 17:47walls, like you can reuse this on all of
- 17:50your projects. So, um it is a little bit
- 17:52of like setup work, but your future self
- 17:56will thank you. Now, to start adding
- 17:58some furnishings in here, like for
- 18:00instance, I want to add um like a door
- 18:03over here, and like we need to get our
- 18:04kitchen in here. Um, we are obviously
- 18:08going to head over to our block library,
- 18:10which again, Rayon has over 10,000
- 18:12blocks. Um, many of them have front,
- 18:15top, and side views, which means that I
- 18:17don't have to be searching for any like
- 18:19sort of matching symbols or convert
- 18:21anything manually like I would have to
- 18:23do if I was using AutoCAD. I'll just add
- 18:25in a couple different things here. I'm
- 18:27going to add in a door. I'll show you
- 18:28how you can add in like a side view of
- 18:31cabinetry. And then we'll also throw in
- 18:33a person. So, mosy in over here to our
- 18:36block library. I'm going to just scroll
- 18:38down here and look for openings.
- 18:42So, openings right here.
- 18:45And you'll see that these are all these
- 18:48like say family. If you click on the
- 18:50family, let's find a door that we like
- 18:52and click on the family. Click on
- 18:54family. And what that's going to show
- 18:56you is the three different views that it
- 18:58has for this particular door. So, we
- 19:00have a floor plan, we've got our
- 19:01elevation, and then we've got our side
- 19:03section. I, for instance, want to grab
- 19:05this door. Even though it says it's an
- 19:06EU door, that's fine. Um, so we're going
- 19:09to drag and drop this over here. And
- 19:10because we have this, uh, project to
- 19:13scale, uh, it's going to drop into
- 19:15scale. We have it as like a 1 one scale.
- 19:171 ft equals 12 in or 1 ft equals 1 ft.
- 19:21And if we need to, we can just like
- 19:23adjust the size like that. Scale it up.
- 19:26Um, or you can also just search for any
- 19:28other doors if you need to. Um, if you
- 19:30need to like mirror this, maybe it opens
- 19:31on the other side, you can easily do
- 19:33that. Now, let's go take a look and see
- 19:35if we have any like good cabinetry in
- 19:37here. So, under kitchen basics, let's go
- 19:41click in there, and we'll see that we've
- 19:44got all different kinds of items in
- 19:48here. So, I'm going to just type in the
- 19:51search button. And I'm going to just
- 19:52type in case work or mill work or uh
- 19:56joinery or whatever it is wherever you
- 19:59live. Um and then I'm going to click on
- 20:01the family and I'm just going to drag in
- 20:04this elevation of this case work. So
- 20:07it's as easy as that. I'm just going to,
- 20:09you know, drop it. If you need to make
- 20:11multiple of them, you just kind of copy
- 20:12and paste. If you need to add in a
- 20:16fridge or something like that, you're
- 20:18going to be able to find that in the
- 20:19block library. Now, before I kind of
- 20:22like work on detailing this a little bit
- 20:24more, let me show you how to add in a
- 20:26person, which is a really good way to uh
- 20:28show some scale here. So, if we just
- 20:30scroll down to people,
- 20:34I'm going to go over here. And again,
- 20:36these all have like three different
- 20:38views. So, uh we can, you know, find the
- 20:42same person maybe we had in our floor
- 20:44plan. Uh but we're just going to see
- 20:46them in elevation or section. Now, I'm
- 20:49just going to type in
- 20:51standing. See what we get here.
- 20:54So, person standing. Let's go see what
- 20:57views we have. We've got a front on side
- 21:00and then uh top view. So, awesome. I'm
- 21:03going to just drag in the side view and
- 21:04you'll be able to see like how much
- 21:06scale this gives. So, now we've got our
- 21:09person standing on the side and this
- 21:11section is off to a great start. Now, if
- 21:14there are any other blocks um that you
- 21:17have from CAD or if you want to like
- 21:19create your own, you can totally uh
- 21:21import those, you can also just curate
- 21:23your own blocks into a personal or team
- 21:26library. You can also go ahead and edit
- 21:28some of these. So, if you click on the
- 21:30block and go down to edit, like for
- 21:32instance, if you wanted to you didn't
- 21:35want these legs to show in section, you
- 21:38can just delete those. And you can see
- 21:39any other instance that I've copied it
- 21:41like it's going to delete those as well.
- 21:43So, heading back over to our layers now,
- 21:45let me just show you when I turn off my
- 21:48guidelines here. Now, it looks like an
- 21:50actual section, right? And um as I
- 21:54mentioned before, if you are uh
- 21:56detailing,
- 21:58you know, what's actually beyond this
- 21:59section cut, so maybe you're detailing
- 22:01some of like the rest of the house over
- 22:02here, you would just basically rinse and
- 22:04repeat that entire process that we just
- 22:06did. um just use your lines as your
- 22:08guidelines and then start, you know,
- 22:11creating basically a polyline is what
- 22:14you're going to do. You're going to
- 22:15create a polyline and then you'll just
- 22:18give that polyline a fill to indicate
- 22:19whatever kind of material you have. So
- 22:21for instance, I just created that
- 22:23polyline and then if I want to go to
- 22:24fill, if I want to indicate that this is
- 22:28let's see here, maybe this is
- 22:32brick. So we'll have like this, you
- 22:34know, stack right here. So that's gonna
- 22:36how you're going to kind of like give
- 22:37more of like a fill to the exterior part
- 22:39of the elevation. So after some more
- 22:42development, this is what our elevation
- 22:44or our interior elevation or our section
- 22:47starts to look like. So um we've got
- 22:50some of our blocks in here. We've got um
- 22:52our walls. We've got our roof. A little
- 22:55bit more just detail everywhere. Now let
- 22:58me just show you how we could add some
- 23:00dimensions and some tags in order to
- 23:02give a little bit more information here.
- 23:04So, all you need to do is just grab your
- 23:06dimension tool down here and um just
- 23:10click point A and point B of what you
- 23:13want to dimension. So, I'm going to
- 23:15click this and this. And this might be a
- 23:17good time also to maybe create another
- 23:20layer that you would put all of your
- 23:22dimensions on. Um, and that would be
- 23:24under your section layer. So, it would
- 23:25be like again another nested uh layer in
- 23:28there. So, we've got our first dimension
- 23:30here. If we want to make that a
- 23:32different color to make it stand out,
- 23:33you know, all we do is come over here
- 23:35and change the color, change anything
- 23:38over here that we want. I'm going to put
- 23:39a red stroke. Maybe you want the ends to
- 23:42look a little bit different. Maybe they
- 23:45should have arrows on them. So, we can
- 23:46do that. And then once you find the
- 23:48style that you like, you just hit plus
- 23:50and you just say like red dimension.
- 23:53And now we have that style. So then when
- 23:55we want to add any other dimensions like
- 23:57for instance if we want this height that
- 23:59we have here um you can either just use
- 24:02your uh picker tool um or just select
- 24:05the dimension and say replace all and
- 24:07then select our red dim um that we just
- 24:10created. So
- 24:12you can just continue to populate like
- 24:13that. Um we can also add in a nice
- 24:16little leader line. For instance, maybe
- 24:17if we want to call out something like
- 24:20this uh tile, you'll just click where
- 24:22you want to annotate. Maybe maybe we'll
- 24:25just say like backsplash
- 24:28uh Ashler installation or something like
- 24:32that. And then of course we can always
- 24:35edit the style of this as well. So um if
- 24:38you already have one in your file,
- 24:40great. Or you can change the color, the
- 24:44stroke color, the stroke thickness. Um,
- 24:46you can also change like if you want it
- 24:48to be um an arrow or uh like a dot like
- 24:51that, change the font, the font size,
- 24:54everything. And then once you get that,
- 24:56you would just say like red annotation.
- 24:59Or if you already have one um that
- 25:01you've saved from another one of your
- 25:03canvases or something, then you just
- 25:05grab that one. So that's kind of how you
- 25:06can start to populate this section with
- 25:10more annotations. Now, before I show you
- 25:12an easy little trick to convert this
- 25:15section into an elevation, just a recap
- 25:18real quick on these fills. So, similar
- 25:21to how I was just showing you how you
- 25:23could uh, you know, kind of fill in your
- 25:26exterior materials, you can do the same
- 25:29thing with these interior materials. So,
- 25:30if I'm like double clicking here a
- 25:32couple of times, if I want to um I'll
- 25:35just delete that fill real quick. If I
- 25:36wanted to create a fill with a tile, all
- 25:39I have to do is just go grab my polyline
- 25:41and then snap and basically outline
- 25:44wherever I want it to be.
- 25:47Right. And then once you have that, just
- 25:49hit escape. And now you can fill this
- 25:51with whatever you want. So I'm going to
- 25:52add my fill. This is going to be a tile.
- 25:55So let's go see if we can find like a
- 25:57good tile. And of course you can add in
- 25:59something realistic or something just
- 26:01more of like a pattern. Um let's just
- 26:03select that one. We can let's see here.
- 26:05make it we could make it half the size.
- 26:09So, let's just say 0.5. And I want to
- 26:12get rid of our stroke. So, I'm going to
- 26:14say remove stroke. And now we've got um
- 26:18this very easily editable fill that we
- 26:21can always go back and change. Like for
- 26:22instance, if we change the tile and we
- 26:24want to represent it differently. All
- 26:25you have to do is go in, select this
- 26:26fill, and then change the texture. It's
- 26:28the same kind of thing with that whole
- 26:30like exterior material thing. The same
- 26:31kind of thing works for the interior as
- 26:33well. So now as we wrap this lesson up,
- 26:35this is obviously the more detailed
- 26:36version of this section. So you know, we
- 26:38can see our little um interior section
- 26:41that we just created, but then also we
- 26:43have a representation of all this
- 26:45exterior, which like I mentioned is not
- 26:48necessarily going to be in the scope um
- 26:50for an interior designer. It just kind
- 26:52of depends on what you work on. If you
- 26:54were to model or, you know, model line
- 26:57all of this, uh it would be just the
- 26:58same kind of uh process that we just
- 27:01went through. But if you did want to
- 27:04convert this to an elevation really
- 27:06easily, uh all you really have to do is
- 27:09either delete the interior of this space
- 27:12and then replace it with a fill or um my
- 27:15kind of like easy way to do it is to
- 27:18just create a fill and put that on its
- 27:20own layer that you can turn on and off.
- 27:22For instance, if you wanted to be able
- 27:23to transform this into an elevation
- 27:26really quickly, all you have to do is
- 27:28let's see here. We'll create a new
- 27:30layer. Um, I'm going to call it
- 27:33elevation. And then we'll grab our
- 27:35polyline. And I'm just going to
- 27:37basically trace
- 27:39this part of my building that we were
- 27:42just like showing all of our interior
- 27:43stuff.
- 27:45And I'm just going to create a fill
- 27:47that's going to essentially cover it up.
- 27:50So, we've got this fill here. We've got
- 27:51this polyline. And all I have to do is
- 27:53add in a fill. Um, I can even just use
- 27:56my little eyropper and grab that fill
- 27:57right there. Um, and now this has
- 28:00basically been converted into an
- 28:02elevation. Now, um, if I wanted to turn
- 28:05that off, all I would have to do is come
- 28:06over here and turn that off. And now
- 28:08we've turned it into a section. So, um,
- 28:11that just saves you a little bit of
- 28:12work. Now, you can, of course, always,
- 28:14uh, copy and paste uh, these sections
- 28:17that you've created and then create a
- 28:19whole new elevation from that like we
- 28:21kind of have over here. Like this is
- 28:22basically a copy paste version. So, the
- 28:24elevation just lies on its own little um
- 28:28piece of this canvas, but it's really
- 28:31just up to you and how like big the
- 28:33scope of your project is, um the size of
- 28:36your project, all that kind of stuff.
- 28:37So, that's really just up to you to
- 28:39determine. Um but this is the easiest
- 28:41way to create these elevations and
- 28:43sections. Now, to kind of wrap things
- 28:45up, let me just show you, as always, how
- 28:47to add these to your own paper sheet
- 28:50within our um paper canvas. So, I'm
- 28:53going to just drop in a whole new page
- 28:56and just kind of show you how to do it
- 28:57from scratch. So, over here under
- 28:59layers, we'll go to plus page and it's
- 29:01going to drop a new page on here. And we
- 29:03are using an A3 page. So, we'll just
- 29:06keep that as is. And then same thing
- 29:09that we've done for all these other
- 29:10drawings, we are just going to add in a
- 29:14view. So, we'll hit the plus sign right
- 29:16here. And then we'll go to view and
- 29:18we're going to say section and
- 29:19elevation. And what that does is that
- 29:21brings in our entire set right here. If
- 29:23you hold down your command, we can just
- 29:26kind of focus in on uh whichever views
- 29:29we want. So, for instance, if we want to
- 29:32make our section sheet, uh we've got
- 29:34these right here. And then over here,
- 29:36you can just change your scale. So, I
- 29:38believe we were using 11 128s before.
- 29:42So, or 128 in.
- 29:46So, I need to move this out a little bit
- 29:48more. Um, and that's kind of what these
- 29:52look like. Now, of course, you might
- 29:54have your title block over here, but
- 29:56eventually what it's going to look like
- 29:58is this sheet that we have here. Um, and
- 30:01you can see that we do have like some of
- 30:02our guidelines and some of our
- 30:03dimensions turned on for these views.
- 30:06Um, I really love in here how, you know,
- 30:10we've got like a little bit of like blue
- 30:12indicating the pool. You could also do
- 30:14kind of like a blue transparent type of
- 30:17color for windows. You can just get like
- 30:20really creative with it. And it just it
- 30:21depends on what kind of style you want
- 30:23to go for. If you want to do something a
- 30:24little bit more realistic, um then you
- 30:26maybe want to make your fills those more
- 30:28realistic uh materials instead of just
- 30:30like the pattern fills. Now, if you want
- 30:32to also get a little bit more realistic,
- 30:34you can also add in uh shadow lines like
- 30:37this, which again is just created by
- 30:39adding those fills. So really just up to
- 30:41you as a designer how detailed and
- 30:44intricate you want these uh drawings to
- 30:46look. It's really amazing what you can
- 30:48create uh all right within this one
- 30:51design platform. And that wraps things
- 30:52up for lesson 5. Today we cover the
- 30:54essentials of creating drawing sections
- 30:56and elevations more efficiently. All the
- 30:58way from choosing the right section cut
- 31:00to applying line weights, material
- 31:01representation, and annotations to keep
- 31:03your drawings clear and professional.
- 31:05You also got a chance to see how Rayon's
- 31:07wall tool, dial presets, and side view
- 31:09block library can speed up your workflow
- 31:11dramatically. By now, you should feel
- 31:13confident creating clean, consistent
- 31:15elevations and sections that are both
- 31:16presentation ready and build ready
- 31:18without wasting hours redrawing and
- 31:20reformatting. Don't forget, you can
- 31:22download that editable drawing set
- 31:23template linked below and adapt it to
- 31:25your own project. If you'd like extra
- 31:27guidance, you can also book that
- 31:28one-on-one demo call using the link
- 31:30below. And as always, if you're enjoying
- 31:31this series, please make sure to like,
- 31:33subscribe, and comment with your
- 31:35takeaways. We want to hear how you're
- 31:36using this workflow to streamline your
- 31:38own projects. Up next, we're going to be
- 31:39focusing on Milwork shop drawings, so
- 31:41stay tuned for that. Until then, thanks
- 31:43for joining me today, and I'll see you
- 31:44in the next lesson.
