- 0:01in the words of bradley manning
- 0:04yes your honor
- 0:05i wrote this statement in confinement
- 0:08i was deployed to baghdad
- 0:11i want people
- 0:12to see the truth
- 0:16manning was someone who signed up to be
- 0:18a soldier he volunteered to be in iraq
- 0:20he was deeply disturbed by what he was
- 0:22seen as an intelligence analyst in iraq
- 0:24the shooting of the reuters reporters
- 0:26civilians by helicopter
- 0:37he leaked documents during the war and
- 0:39they were enormously helpful for people
- 0:41on the outside to understand what the
- 0:42government was thinking about on the
- 0:44inside if you join the armed forces
- 0:47are you accepting on that day when you
- 0:49sign the paper
- 0:51and you join up
- 0:52that you will turn a blind eye to any
- 0:55war crime that you witness
- 0:57particularly in the uniform of our
- 0:58country
- 0:59if you don't have truth then we have to
- 1:02ask ourselves why do we risk anything
- 1:04and what are we fighting for to begin
- 1:06with he is asking us to
- 1:09look at
- 1:10the consequences of war the damage that
- 1:13war produces there is a protocol for
- 1:17for torture the army reports listed some
- 1:1960 000 civilians dead hillary clinton
- 1:22was ordering state department employees
- 1:24to spy on diplomats he's a man who's
- 1:27done things that the mainstream media
- 1:30should have done a long time ago he
- 1:32ignited
- 1:33this chain of social
- 1:35action we saw very clearly
- 1:38the discrepancies between what we were
- 1:40being told and what was actually
- 1:41happening he's a whistleblower and the
- 1:44whole concept of whistleblower laws and
- 1:46whistleblower protections are you cannot
- 1:48get into trouble for reporting about
- 1:50illegal or improper activity it's
- 1:52enshrined in our constitution that an
- 1:54individual has the right to release
- 1:56information and disseminate information
- 1:58that makes the powers that be
- 2:00uncomfortable it's an absurd charge to
- 2:02be charging him with giving aid and
- 2:05comfort to the enemy the attempt is to
- 2:07shut down any free flow of information
- 2:09they want to shut him up lock him up to
- 2:12take a risk and to take a stand knowing
- 2:14that in all likelihoods you will be
- 2:16persecuted penalized demonized and
- 2:19punished for it that's
- 2:20incredibly bold how are you going to act
- 2:23on your conscience when you know if you
- 2:25do so that you could be subject to the
- 2:27death penalty for aiding the enemy for
- 2:30simply being a whistleblower of
- 2:32criminality could possibly lead to
- 2:34lifetime imprisonment or even death
- 2:39i heard his testimony on the day he
- 2:40talked about the torture it was the most
- 2:42moving dive ever spent in a courtroom
- 2:44and i spent 40 years listening to people
- 2:46talk about how they were tortured when
- 2:48he first got arrested and was put into a
- 2:49wire cage in a tent and was stripped
- 2:52naked and paraded around he drew the
- 2:54cell that he was in on the floor and how
- 2:57he had to lay in the cell and how the
- 2:59light was on him 24 hours forced to
- 3:01sleep without cover condition is far
- 3:03worse than
- 3:04soldiers who have been convicted of
- 3:06cold-blooded murder every single
- 3:08newspaper in this country ought to be
- 3:10screaming screaming about bradley
- 3:12manning the whole concept of freedom of
- 3:15speech and the freedom of the press
- 3:17these are this is under direct threat in
- 3:19this in this one case it's important
- 3:21that we do have those people who stand
- 3:23up and expose what's really going on
- 3:25they take enormous risks on our behalf
- 3:28and we need more like him and now that i
- 3:29know it i cannot unknow it
- 3:32so the question for all of us
- 3:35when you see atrocities like those that
- 3:37bradley manning saw
- 3:39is the question he asked if you saw
- 3:42incredible things awful things things
- 3:44that belonged in the public domain and
- 3:47not on certain servers stored in a dark
- 3:49room in washington dc what would you do
- 3:52what would you do what would you do what
- 3:54would you do i was bradley manning
- 3:56i am bradley manning i am bradley
- 3:59manning i am bradley manning i am
- 4:01bradley bradley manning bradley manning
- 4:03bradley i hope that we are all bradley
- 4:06manning if it happens to him it is
- 4:08happening to us god knows what happens
- 4:10now hopefully worldwide discussion
- 4:13debates and reforms i want people to see
- 4:16the truth i want people to see the truth
- 4:17i want people to see the truth because
- 4:20without information
- 4:23you cannot make informed decisions as a
- 4:26public
