- 0:00"Stop. It's a trap. Turn back, or every
- 0:03last one of you dies tonight."
- 0:05The girl was barefoot, thin as a shadow,
- 0:07and she threw her whole body into the
- 0:09path of 22 roaring motorcycles.
- 0:12Cole Bear Harrison crushed his brakes so
- 0:14hard the tires screamed, stopping inches
- 0:16from her ribs.
- 0:17Nobody warns the Hells Angels. Nobody
- 0:19dares. Yet here stood a starving
- 0:2117-year-old trembling, ready to be run
- 0:24down because she'd rather die than watch
- 0:26these men ride into a slaughter. If a
- 0:28stranger ever risked everything to save
- 0:31you, hit subscribe, stay with me to the
- 0:34very end, and comment the city you're
- 0:35watching from. I want to see how far
- 0:37this story travels. The engines died one
- 0:40by one until the only sound left on that
- 0:42highway was the girl's breathing. She
- 0:45was still standing in the middle of the
- 0:46road, still shaking.
- 0:49Her arms were stretched out wide like
- 0:50she thought her two skinny hands could
- 0:52hold back 3,000 lb of steel and leather.
- 0:55Cole Harrison sat on his motorcycle and
- 0:57stared at her.
- 0:5852 years old, gray beard down to his
- 1:01chest, arms covered in ink so old the
- 1:04colors had faded.
- 1:05He had seen a lot of things in his life.
- 1:07He had never seen this.
- 1:09"Get off the road," he said, low,
- 1:11careful. The girl didn't move. "I said
- 1:14get off the road, kid. You almost got
- 1:16yourself killed."
- 1:18"You didn't hear me." Her voice cracked.
- 1:20"I said stop, all of you, right now.
- 1:23Don't go any farther up that highway."
- 1:25Behind Cole, the other riders were
- 1:27already climbing off their bikes. 21
- 1:29men, boots hitting the pavement, leather
- 1:32creaking.
- 1:33Somebody spat on the ground. Somebody
- 1:35else laughed, but it wasn't a kind
- 1:36laugh.
- 1:37A rider named Diesel pushed to the
- 1:39front. Big man, bald head, a temper that
- 1:42had gotten the whole club in trouble
- 1:44more than once.
- 1:45"You know who we are, little girl?"
- 1:47"Yes," she said. "Then you know jumping
- 1:49in front of us is the dumbest thing that
- 1:51a person can do." "I know," she said
- 1:53again. And that answer, that quiet,
- 1:55honest answer, made Diesel stop.
- 1:58Cole held up one hand. The whole club
- 1:59went still. That was the kind of respect
- 2:02he had earned over 30 years.
- 2:04When Bear raised his hand, men who
- 2:05feared nothing shut their mouths.
- 2:07"What's your name?" Cole asked. "Emily."
- 2:10"Emily what?" "Carter." "Emily Carter.
- 2:12Okay, Emily Carter." He swung one leg
- 2:15off the bike and stood it up slow so he
- 2:17wouldn't scare her more than she was
- 2:19already scared.
- 2:20"You've got about 10 seconds to tell me
- 2:23why you'd throw your life away to stop a
- 2:25bunch of strangers on the road, and it
- 2:28better be good."
- 2:29Her eyes filled up, not with tears
- 2:31exactly, with something heavier than
- 2:33tears.
- 2:34"Because I couldn't watch it happen,"
- 2:36she whispered.
- 2:37"Not again.
- 2:39Not when I could stop it."
- 2:41"Watch what happened." She lifted one
- 2:43arm and pointed up the highway toward
- 2:45the hills, toward the long dark stretch
- 2:47of road ahead.
- 2:48"They're waiting for you up there, past
- 2:50the second curve. There are men in the
- 2:52rocks with rifles, and they've buried
- 2:54something across the road so your tires
- 2:57blow out, and when you crash, they're
- 2:58going to finish all of you."
- 3:00For a second, nobody said anything. Then
- 3:03Diesel snorted. "This is a setup." "No,"
- 3:06Emily said. "Sure it is. Little girl
- 3:09stops the club in the middle of nowhere,
- 3:11tells a scary story, keeps us standing
- 3:13still in the open like ducks. Bear, this
- 3:15is bait. She's part of it."
- 3:18"I'm not," Emily said, and her voice
- 3:20climbed higher, faster.
- 3:21"I swear to God I'm not. I don't even
- 3:24know you. I don't know any of you. I was
- 3:26just looking for food. That's all I was
- 3:28doing.
- 3:29I was looking for something to eat, and
- 3:31I saw them."
- 3:32"Saw who?" Cole cut in. "The men. The
- 3:35ones setting it up. There's five of
- 3:37them, maybe six. They've got a truck
- 3:39hidden behind the ridge. They dragged
- 3:41something metal across the road and
- 3:42covered it with dirt.
- 3:44And one of them kept looking at his
- 3:45phone and saying, 'They'll be here in 20
- 3:48minutes. Don't move till I say.'"
- 3:50Cole felt something cold slide down his
- 3:53spine because 20 minutes ago was almost
- 3:55exactly when the club had rolled out of
- 3:57the last gas station. He didn't let it
- 3:59show on his face,
- 4:01but he felt it. "How do you know they
- 4:03meant us?" he asked. "Because one of
- 4:05them said it."
- 4:06Emily wiped her face with the back of
- 4:08her hand. "He said 22 of them, all
- 4:10angels. [clears throat]
- 4:11Nobody's going to miss a bunch of bikers
- 4:13out here."
- 4:14The laughter stopped. Every single one
- 4:17of them heard that number, 22. They had
- 4:20left the station with exactly 22 riders.
- 4:23Diesel's face changed.
- 4:25"Anybody could count us," he said, but
- 4:26there was less fire in it now. "Then
- 4:28explain how she knew our count before
- 4:30[clears throat] she ever laid eyes on
- 4:31us," Cole said quietly. "She was already
- 4:34on the road when we came around the
- 4:35bend. She didn't have time to count.
- 4:38Somebody told her that number
- 4:40or she heard it."
- 4:41Nobody answered. Cole turned back to the
- 4:44girl. He looked at her the way a man
- 4:46looks when he's trying to see all the
- 4:47way to the bottom of somebody. Her
- 4:49jacket was two sizes too big and full of
- 4:51holes.
- 4:52Her backpack was empty and flat against
- 4:55her spine.
- 4:56Her shoes weren't shoes anymore, just
- 4:58canvas and string barely hanging onto
- 5:00her feet. And her eyes, he knew those
- 5:02eyes. He'd seen them on kids who'd been
- 5:04alone too long.
- 5:06Kids who'd learned the hard way that the
- 5:08world doesn't come running when you
- 5:09scream. "You could have run," Cole said.
- 5:12"I know. Nobody would have blamed you.
- 5:15Girl like you out here alone, nobody
- 5:16expects you to stick your neck out for a
- 5:18pack of outlaws."
- 5:20"I know," she said a third time, and
- 5:22then softer, "that's exactly why I
- 5:25couldn't leave."
- 5:26Cole frowned. "What's that supposed to
- 5:28mean?"
- 5:29Emily swallowed hard. "It means I know
- 5:32what it feels like," she said.
- 5:35"When you're the one in danger and
- 5:36everybody who could have helped just
- 5:38looks the other way
- 5:40and keeps walking
- 5:41and pretends they didn't see.
- 5:44I've been that person.
- 5:46On the ground, watching people step
- 5:48around me like I was garbage.
- 5:51Her chin was trembling now, but she
- 5:53didn't stop.
- 5:54I promised myself if I ever saw somebody
- 5:56about to walk into something bad, I
- 5:59wouldn't be one of those people.
- 6:01I wouldn't look away.
- 6:02Even if it was you.
- 6:04Even if you scared me to death. The
- 6:06whole club heard it. 21 hardened men,
- 6:08most of whom hadn't cried since they
- 6:10were boys, and not one of them said a
- 6:12word.
- 6:13Diesel looked down at his boots. Cole
- 6:15let out a long breath. You scared of us
- 6:18right now, Emily?
- 6:20Yes, she admitted, but you stopped us
- 6:22anyway.
- 6:23Yes. He nodded slowly.
- 6:25He'd spent his whole life measuring
- 6:27people. Who ran, who folded, who lied to
- 6:31save their own skin. And in 30 seconds,
- 6:33this half-starved kid had shown him more
- 6:35backbone than most men showed him in a
- 6:37lifetime. But backbone wasn't proof.
- 6:40And Cole hadn't kept his brothers alive
- 6:42all these years by trusting first and
- 6:44checking later. Here's what's going to
- 6:46happen, he said raising his voice so the
- 6:48whole club could hear. Snake, Torres,
- 6:52Little Ray, you three take the back
- 6:54trail on foot quiet and you go up past
- 6:56that second curve and you tell me what
- 6:58you find.
- 6:59You do not engage. You look, you count,
- 7:02you come back. The rest of us hold here.
- 7:06Three riders peeled off without a word
- 7:09and vanished into the brush along the
- 7:10shoulder.
- 7:11Then Cole turned back to Emily. And you,
- 7:13he said, you're going to stand right
- 7:15here where I can see you. If you're
- 7:17lying to me, kid, if this is a game,
- 7:19we'll know in about 5 minutes and it'll
- 7:21go real bad for you.
- 7:23I'm not lying, she said. Then you've got
- 7:25nothing to worry about.
- 7:27But she did worry. He could see it in
- 7:29the way she wrapped her arms around
- 7:30herself. And that worried him more than
- 7:32anything because it wasn't the worry of
- 7:34somebody who'd been caught in a lie. It
- 7:36was the worry of somebody terrified that
- 7:37the men she'd risked her life to save
- 7:39still might not believe her in time.
- 7:41The minutes crawled, diesel paced. A
- 7:44younger rider named Cutter kept checking
- 7:46the road behind them like the trap might
- 7:48come from that direction instead. The
- 7:51desert wind pushed dust across the
- 7:52pavement.
- 7:53"You got a family, Emily?" Cole asked
- 7:55just to keep her talking.
- 7:57Just to keep her from shaking apart.
- 8:00"No."
- 8:01"Nobody." There was somebody once. She
- 8:03stared at the ground.
- 8:05"Not anymore?"
- 8:06"How long you've been out here on your
- 8:08own?"
- 8:09"A while. I stopped counting."
- 8:11"Where do you sleep?"
- 8:12She hesitated like she was ashamed of
- 8:14the answer.
- 8:15"There's an old bridge couple miles that
- 8:17way. It's dry under there mostly."
- 8:20Cole's jaw tightened. He thought about
- 8:22his own daughter, the one he barely got
- 8:24to see, and how he'd break the arm of
- 8:26any man who let her sleep under a
- 8:28bridge. And here was a girl no different
- 8:30who nobody had come for.
- 8:33"How old are you?" "17."
- 8:35Somebody in the group cursed under their
- 8:36breath.
- 8:38"17." Cole repeated. "And you jumped in
- 8:40front of 22 motorcycles for a bunch of
- 8:42strangers."
- 8:43"You needed help." Emily said simply.
- 8:46Like that explained everything. And
- 8:48maybe it did. That was when they heard
- 8:50the footsteps coming back through the
- 8:52brush.
- 8:53Fast. Not the careful pace of men out
- 8:55for a walk. Snake broke through the
- 8:57shoulder first and his face was pale
- 8:58under the sunburn.
- 9:00"Bare." He was breathing hard. "She's
- 9:03telling the truth. Every word."
- 9:05The whole club went rigid. "Talk." Cole
- 9:08said. "Six of them." "Maybe seven.
- 9:11Hidden up in the rocks past the curve
- 9:12spread out on both sides so they'd have
- 9:14us in a crossfire."
- 9:16"Long guns. And there's a strip of metal
- 9:19spikes dragged across the whole road
- 9:21buried under a layer of dirt right where
- 9:22the pavement dips so you'd never see it
- 9:25coming till your front tire blew."
- 9:27Snake shook his head. "Bare, if we'd
- 9:29come around that curve at speed, we'd
- 9:31have gone down like dominoes. All of us.
- 9:34Every last man."
- 9:36Silence. 22 men standing on an open
- 9:39highway, all of them realizing at the
- 9:41exact same moment that they should
- 9:43already be dead.
- 9:45Diesel turned around slowly
- 9:47and he looked at Emily this time, not
- 9:49like she was bait, not like she was a
- 9:51threat, but like he was seeing her for
- 9:53the first time.
- 9:55You his voice came out rough. You saved
- 9:57my life. You saved all of us. Emily
- 9:59didn't know what to do with that. She'd
- 10:01braced herself for a lot of things. For
- 10:04them to hit her. For them to leave her
- 10:06in the dust. For them to accuse her and
- 10:08ride off.
- 10:09She had not braced herself for
- 10:11gratitude, because gratitude was the one
- 10:13thing the world had never given her.
- 10:15Her legs finally gave out. Cole caught
- 10:18her before she hit the pavement. Just
- 10:20grabbed her under the arms and held her
- 10:21up like she weighed nothing, which she
- 10:23nearly did. "Easy." he said. "Easy, kid.
- 10:27I got you. You're all right. You're all
- 10:29right now."
- 10:30"I'm sorry." she was saying over and
- 10:32over. "I'm sorry. I got dizzy. I haven't
- 10:35I didn't eat today. I'm sorry."
- 10:37And that broke something in Cole
- 10:38Harrison that hadn't broken in a long,
- 10:40long time. She hadn't eaten. She was
- 10:43starving and still hungry and weak and
- 10:45half fainting. She'd found the strength
- 10:47to stand in front of a wall of steel and
- 10:49refused to move. "Cut her." Cole barked.
- 10:52"Water and whatever food anybody's got.
- 10:55Now."
- 10:56Three riders were already digging
- 10:58through their saddlebags. A canteen
- 11:00appeared. A protein bar. Half a sandwich
- 11:03somebody had been saving. "Slow." Cole
- 11:06told her, easing her down to sit on the
- 11:07pavement, crouching in front of her so
- 11:10they were eye to eye.
- 11:11"Small sips. Don't rush it or you'll be
- 11:14sick." Emily drank. Her hands were
- 11:17shaking so bad she could barely hold the
- 11:18canteen, so Cole steadied it for her.
- 11:21And when she finally looked up at him,
- 11:23her tired blue eyes were wet.
- 11:25"You believe me now?" she whispered.
- 11:27"Yeah, kid." His voice was thick. "We
- 11:30believe you."
- 11:31Behind them, the mood of the club had
- 11:33changed completely. The men who'd been
- 11:34ready to ride off 10 minutes ago were
- 11:37now looking up the highway with a hard
- 11:38cold focus. Because it was one thing to
- 11:41be ambushed by strangers. It was another
- 11:43thing entirely to know that a starving
- 11:45child had thrown herself in front of a
- 11:47firing squad to save them while grown
- 11:49men with guns sat in the rocks waiting
- 11:51to gun them down for sport.
- 11:53"They said nobody would miss us." Diesel
- 11:55muttered. "Nobody's going to miss a
- 11:57bunch of bikers out here."
- 11:59"They said that?" Cutter asked. "That's
- 12:01what she heard."
- 12:03Diesel's fists were clenched. "That's
- 12:04what those men said." Cole stood up
- 12:06slowly. He looked at the hills. He
- 12:08looked at the curve in the road where
- 12:10six or seven men were still crouched
- 12:12behind rifles. Still waiting. Still
- 12:14checking their phones and wondering why
- 12:16the angels hadn't come around the bend
- 12:17yet.
- 12:18Then he looked back down at Emily
- 12:20sitting on the pavement with a
- 12:21half-eaten sandwich in her trembling
- 12:23hands, alive only because she was too
- 12:26stubborn to save herself first. "Emily,"
- 12:28he said, "I need you to tell me
- 12:30everything. Slow and careful in every
- 12:32detail you can remember.
- 12:34How many were they standing, what
- 12:35they're wearing, what they said, all of
- 12:37it."
- 12:38"Why?" Cole's face was carved from
- 12:40stone. "Because those men made a bad
- 12:42mistake today." He said. "They thought
- 12:44they were setting a trap for a pack of
- 12:46dumb outlaws who'd never see it coming."
- 12:49He let his gaze drift back up to the
- 12:50ridge line. "They didn't count on one
- 12:53thing. They didn't count on a girl
- 12:55nobody in this world ever bothered to
- 12:56see."
- 12:58Emily stared up at him. "They're going
- 13:00to be sorry they didn't see you." Cole
- 13:01said. "I promise you that." And around
- 13:04them, one by one, 21 motorcycles roared
- 13:07back to life. But this time not one of
- 13:09them pointed forward toward the curve.
- 13:11They turned. Every single one. Facing
- 13:14the hills. Emily sat in the middle of
- 13:16them, small and shaking and no longer
- 13:18alone. And for the first time in longer
- 13:21than she could remember, she felt
- 13:22something she'd almost forgotten
- 13:24existed. She felt like somebody had her
- 13:27back.
- 13:28"Can you stand Cole Aster?" "I think
- 13:30so." "Then stand up, Emily Carter." He
- 13:33held out one huge tattooed hand. "You
- 13:35did the bravest thing I've ever seen a
- 13:37person do.
- 13:39Now you let us do the rest."
- 13:41She looked at his hand. This man the
- 13:43whole world was afraid of. This man with
- 13:45the gray beard and the cold reputation
- 13:47and the ink up both arms. And she
- 13:49reached up and she took it.
- 13:52His grip closed around her small
- 13:53fingers, steady, warm, and certain. And
- 13:55he pulled her gently to her feet.
- 13:57"You're one of us now," he said. "You
- 13:59understand me?
- 14:01Whatever happens after today, you are
- 14:02never going to sleep under a bridge
- 14:04again."
- 14:05Emily's mouth opened. Nothing came out.
- 14:08Because you can't answer a thing like
- 14:10that when you stop believing you'd ever
- 14:12hear it.
- 14:13Up in the rocks, the men with the rifles
- 14:15were getting nervous. One of them
- 14:17lowered his gun and and squinted at the
- 14:19highway at the strange sight of 22
- 14:21motorcycles turned the wrong way.
- 14:23Engines rumbling, going nowhere. "Why
- 14:25aren't they coming?" one of them hissed.
- 14:27"They should have hit the curve by now."
- 14:30Their leader wiped the sweat off his
- 14:31neck and stared through his scope. And
- 14:34what he saw made his blood run cold.
- 14:36Because standing at the front of that
- 14:37pack of outlaws, sheltered by a wall of
- 14:40leather and steel, was a skinny blonde
- 14:42girl in a torn jacket. The same homeless
- 14:45girl they'd chased off the ridge that
- 14:47morning and thought nothing of. The same
- 14:49girl they'd let walk away because who
- 14:52would ever believe her? "That's her,"
- 14:54the leader breathed. "That's the little
- 14:56witch from this morning.
- 14:58She saw us. She warned them."
- 15:00He grabbed his radio and his hand was
- 15:02shaking now, too.
- 15:03But it was already too late. Down on the
- 15:06highway, Cole Harrison threw one leg
- 15:07over his motorcycle, settled Emily
- 15:10carefully behind him, felt her thin arms
- 15:12wrap around his waist and hold on tight.
- 15:14He looked over his shoulder at 21 of the
- 15:16toughest men in the country, and every
- 15:18one of them was waiting on his word.
- 15:20"They wanted to fight with the Hells
- 15:22Angels, Cole said. He revved the engine
- 15:24until the whole desert shook.
- 15:26Let's go give them one.
- 15:28Orchestrated dramatic narrative
- 15:29continuation with dialogue-driven pacing
- 15:32and psychological depth. Cole felt
- 15:33Emily's arms tighten around his waist
- 15:35the second the engine roared, and he
- 15:37reached back with one hand and covered
- 15:39her small fingers with his.
- 15:41You're not going up there, he said.
- 15:44What?
- 15:45She could barely hear him over the
- 15:46noise. You heard me. You're staying B.
- 15:50Diesel. He waved the big man over. She
- 15:53stays with you, behind the ridge out of
- 15:55the line of fire.
- 15:57She's done her part. She's not doing any
- 15:59more.
- 16:01Emily's grip didn't loosen. If anything,
- 16:03it got harder.
- 16:05No, she said. Cole turned in the seat.
- 16:08Kid, you don't understand.
- 16:10Her voice was shaking, but it wasn't
- 16:12from fear now, or not only from fear.
- 16:16There's a second one. The whole world
- 16:18seemed to stop.
- 16:20A second what? Cole said slowly. A
- 16:22second man with a rifle, on the other
- 16:25side, the low side past the spikes.
- 16:27I didn't tell you because I thought I
- 16:29thought your men saw him, but Snake only
- 16:31said six, maybe seven, and they were all
- 16:34on the high side, and if he only counted
- 16:36the high side, then there's one more
- 16:38nobody knows about down in the ditch.
- 16:40And if you ride up there thinking you've
- 16:42got them all, Diesel. Cole's voice
- 16:44cracked like a whip. Get Snake now.
- 16:47Snake came running, and Cole grabbed him
- 16:49by the front of his vest. The men you
- 16:51counted, were they all up high all on
- 16:53the rocks?
- 16:54Yeah, both sides of the curve up in the
- 16:57down low, was there anybody down low in
- 16:59the ditch by the road? Snake's face went
- 17:02white. I didn't I couldn't see the ditch
- 17:04from where I was, the angle. I couldn't
- 17:06see into it. Cole let go of him. For a
- 17:08long moment, he didn't say anything at
- 17:10all. And then he looked back at Emily,
- 17:12and something in his chest turned over
- 17:14because he understood exactly what had
- 17:16almost happened.
- 17:18"You just saved us again." He said
- 17:20quietly.
- 17:21"We were about to charge that curve.
- 17:23We'd have flanked the high side thinking
- 17:25we had him pinned. And that man in the
- 17:27ditch would have had our backs the whole
- 17:29time." Emily nodded. She'd stopped
- 17:31crying. She was past crying now, running
- 17:34on something colder and clearer.
- 17:35"That's why I have to come." She said,
- 17:37"Because I'm the only one who knows
- 17:39where he is. I saw him crawl down there.
- 17:41I know exactly which spot."
- 17:43Diesel was already shaking his head.
- 17:46"Bear, we can't take a kid into to to go
- 17:48"I know." Cole's jaw worked. "I know we
- 17:51can't." "Then don't."
- 17:53Emily leaned forward so she was talking
- 17:55right into his ear, low and fierce.
- 17:57"Just let me show you from here, from
- 17:59the ridge. I point, you look, then you
- 18:02put me somewhere safe and you go do what
- 18:04you do. But if you go up there blind,
- 18:06one of you dies, maybe more than one
- 18:08one. And I didn't stand in front of your
- 18:10motorcycles just to watch it happen
- 18:12anyway. And that that was the thing that
- 18:14got him." Not [clears throat] the logic
- 18:15of it though. The logic was sound. It
- 18:17was the way she said it. Like the idea
- 18:19of one of them dying now after all this
- 18:21was more than she could stand. Like
- 18:23somewhere in the last 20 minutes these
- 18:2522 strangers had stopped being strangers
- 18:28to her.
- 18:29"Okay." Cole said. "Bear." Diesel
- 18:31started. "She points, she shows us, then
- 18:34she's behind the ridge with two men on
- 18:36her and she does not move. That's the
- 18:38deal."
- 18:39He looked at Emily. "You break that
- 18:41deal, you don't just put yourself in
- 18:42danger. You put whoever's guarding you
- 18:44in danger, too.
- 18:46You understand what I'm telling you?"
- 18:48"I understand."
- 18:49"Say it back to me."
- 18:51"I show you where he is, then I go
- 18:53behind the ridge and I don't move no
- 18:55matter what I hear." "No matter what you
- 18:57hear." Cole repeated. "That part's the
- 18:59hard part. You're going to hear things
- 19:01up there. You do not come out."
- 19:04"I won't." He didn't fully believe her,
- 19:06but there wasn't time. They killed the
- 19:08engines, all of them.
- 19:1022 motorcycles went silent at once and
- 19:12the sudden quiet was almost worse than
- 19:14the noise. Cole led them off the
- 19:16pavement on foot into the brush along
- 19:18the shoulder moving up toward the ridge
- 19:20the same way Snake had gone and Emily
- 19:23moved with them light and quiet on her
- 19:25ruined shoes quieter than any of the big
- 19:27men in their heavy boots. Cole noticed
- 19:30of course she was quiet. She'd spent
- 19:32months learning how to move without
- 19:33being seen. It was the only thing that
- 19:36had kept her alive.
- 19:37Near the top of the ridge he raised a
- 19:39fist and everybody froze. There. Emily
- 19:42breathed aren't pointing. Not up at the
- 19:44rocks where Snake had seen the others.
- 19:46Down. Into a shallow cut in the earth
- 19:49beside the road where the dirt had been
- 19:50kicked up and a man's boot heel was just
- 19:53barely visible above the lip of the
- 19:54ditch. If you didn't know to look you'd
- 19:57never see it. You'd ride right past and
- 19:59put your back to him.
- 20:01Cole stared at that boot heel for a long
- 20:035 seconds.
- 20:05Torres he whispered out.
- 20:07You see it. Torres who'd been in the
- 20:09army before the club put his eye to the
- 20:10sight of the pistol he carried and
- 20:12nodded once. Who got him?
- 20:14Torres breathed. Nobody moves till I
- 20:16say. This is the one who kills us if
- 20:19we're sloppy.
- 20:20Cole turned to Emily and pointed back
- 20:22down the slope to where two riders were
- 20:24already waiting in a fold of the ground
- 20:26out of sight of the road. Go now. Head
- 20:29down. Stay low. Don't stop till you're
- 20:30with them. Go. Emily went. She didn't
- 20:33argue didn't hesitate [clears throat]
- 20:35just melted back down the slope the way
- 20:37she'd been taught to disappear and Cole
- 20:39watched her go and felt a knot in his
- 20:41chest loosen half an inch.
- 20:43Then he turned back to the ridge and the
- 20:45knot pulled tight again because now came
- 20:47the part where men either lived or died
- 20:49and there was no starving girl left to
- 20:51save them from their own mistakes. He
- 20:53spread his men wide with nothing but his
- 20:55hands. Left right. Torres on the ditch
- 20:59the one job that mattered most. And when
- 21:01they were all set when 21 hard men were
- 21:04spread across that ridge like a closing
- 21:06hand Cole did the last thing the
- 21:08ambushers ever expected.
- 21:10He stood up full height in the open
- 21:13where they could all see him, and he
- 21:15shouted down at the rocks, "You boys
- 21:17looking for us?"
- 21:18The whole hillside came apart. The first
- 21:21shot cracked off the stone a foot from
- 21:23Cole's head, and he was already
- 21:25dropping, already rolling, and then his
- 21:27men opened up from every side at once,
- 21:29and the ambush that had been so
- 21:31carefully planned to catch 22 men in a
- 21:33crossfire suddenly found itself in one
- 21:36instead. The men in the rocks had set up
- 21:38to shoot down at a road. They had not
- 21:40set [clears throat] up to be flanked on
- 21:41both sides by an enemy who already knew
- 21:44exactly where every one of them was
- 21:46hiding.
- 21:47That was the thing about a good ambush.
- 21:49It only worked if the other side didn't
- 21:51see it coming.
- 21:52And thanks to a 17-year-old girl, the
- 21:54Angels had seen every inch of it coming.
- 21:56Down in the ditch, the hidden man rose
- 21:58up with his rifle swinging it toward
- 22:00Cole's exposed position.
- 22:02His one job to put a bullet in the
- 22:04leader's back, and Torres, who'd been
- 22:05watching that boot heel for two solid
- 22:07minutes, was already on him.
- 22:09It was over in seconds.
- 22:11The man in the ditch never got a shot,
- 22:13and with him down, the last piece of the
- 22:15trap collapsed, and the men in the rocks
- 22:17understood all at once that the hunters
- 22:19had become the hunted. They ran. They
- 22:22didn't fight, didn't hold, didn't try to
- 22:23make a stand the second they realized
- 22:26their perfect trap had been turned
- 22:27inside out. They scrambled up out of the
- 22:30rocks and bolted for the truck hidden
- 22:33behind the ridge exactly the way cowards
- 22:36run when the easy kill turns hard.
- 22:39"They're rabbiting," Diesel roared.
- 22:40"Behind the ridge, they got a truck."
- 22:43"Let them run," Cole shouted back.
- 22:45"Nobody chases, you hear me? Nobody
- 22:47chases." Diesel spun around wild-eyed.
- 22:50"Bare they tried to murder all of us,
- 22:52and every man still standing is a man we
- 22:55don't have to bury. Let them run."
- 22:58Cole was on his feet now, moving fast
- 23:00down the line and grabbing shoulders,
- 23:02turning faces toward him.
- 23:04You chase them onto those rocks. You
- 23:06don't know what's up there. You don't
- 23:08know who's got a gun still pointed. She
- 23:10warned us about one ditch we couldn't
- 23:12see. How many other things can't we see?
- 23:14Everybody holds. Everybody breathes.
- 23:17Count your brothers. That last order cut
- 23:20through the rage like nothing else could
- 23:22have. Count your brothers. 21 men
- 23:24started calling out names and Cole stood
- 23:26in the middle of the ridge with his
- 23:27heart hammering, waiting to hear the one
- 23:29number he was terrified he wouldn't get.
- 23:32Snake up, Torres up, Cutter up, Diesel
- 23:35up.
- 23:36One by one they sounded off and Cole
- 23:38counted them in his head. And when the
- 23:40last voice called out and the number hit
- 23:4221, his knees almost went. 21 plus
- 23:45himself, 22. Not one man down. He looked
- 23:48up at the sky for a second, just for a
- 23:50second, and let out a breath he felt
- 23:52like he'd been holding his entire life.
- 23:54"Everybody's up." He said hoarsely.
- 23:57"Everybody's up. Nobody's hurt."
- 24:00And that was when he remembered. Emily.
- 24:03He was already running before the word
- 24:04was all the way out. Down the slope,
- 24:06through the brush, back toward the fold
- 24:08of ground where he'd sent her. And the
- 24:10whole way down his chest was seizing up
- 24:12because he told her to stay put, no
- 24:14matter what she heard. And what she'd
- 24:16heard was a gunfight. And if that girl
- 24:18had come out, if she'd come looking, if
- 24:20a stray round
- 24:22He came over the last rise and stopped
- 24:24dead.
- 24:25She was there, sitting exactly where he
- 24:28told her to sit between the two riders
- 24:30who'd been guarding her. Her knees
- 24:31pulled up to her chest and her arms
- 24:33wrapped around them. And her whole body
- 24:35shaking so hard the two big men on
- 24:37either side of her looked helpless.
- 24:39She'd done it. She'd kept the deal.
- 24:42She'd sat there through the whole thing,
- 24:43through every gunshot, terrified out of
- 24:45her mind, and she hadn't moved. "I heard
- 24:47she got out when she saw them. I heard
- 24:49all the shooting and I didn't come out.
- 24:52You said don't come out, so I didn't.
- 24:54But I didn't know if you were if any of
- 24:56you
- 24:57Everybody's fine. Cole dropped to his
- 24:59knees in front of her. You hear me?
- 25:01Everybody's fine. Not one man got a
- 25:04scratch because of you. Every single one
- 25:06of us is walking away from this because
- 25:08of you. She looked at him like she
- 25:10couldn't quite believe it and then the
- 25:11shaking got worse instead of better.
- 25:14Because that's what happens when the
- 25:15fear finally has somewhere to go and she
- 25:18pressed her face against her knees and
- 25:20her shoulders started heaving.
- 25:22Cole did the only thing he knew how to
- 25:23do. He put one big arm around her thin
- 25:26shoulders careful like she was made of
- 25:28glass and he held on. You did good kid,
- 25:30he said quietly over and over.
- 25:33You did so good. It's over. You can let
- 25:36go now. I got you. It's over.
- 25:38The other men gathered around them. This
- 25:40ring of leather and gray beards and hard
- 25:43faces and not one of them said a word
- 25:46and not one of them looked away and
- 25:48Emily Carter cried in the middle of them
- 25:50like a girl who had been holding it in
- 25:52for years which she had. When she
- 25:53finally lifted her head wiping her face
- 25:55with both hands embarrassed now the
- 25:58first thing she said was
- 26:00the ones who ran, they're going to come
- 26:02back.
- 26:03Cole frowned. They won't. They got
- 26:05humiliated. Men like that don't You
- 26:08don't get it. She grabbed his sleeve.
- 26:10This wasn't their idea. The men in the
- 26:12rocks, they were hired. I heard them
- 26:14talking about it. One of them kept
- 26:16complaining they weren't getting paid
- 26:18enough for a whole club. Somebody paid
- 26:20them to do this.
- 26:22Somebody who wanted all of you dead
- 26:24specifically. This wasn't random robbers
- 26:26Cole. Somebody sent them.
- 26:29The whole ring of men went still. Cole
- 26:31sat back on his heels. Say that again.
- 26:34They were hired guns. They kept talking
- 26:36about the money about how the guy who
- 26:38hired them said it had to be all of you.
- 26:40No witnesses make it look like it
- 26:41happened on the road. One of them said
- 26:44the name of the person who paid them.
- 26:45She squeezed her eyes shut trying to
- 26:47pull it back.
- 26:48It was it started with a I only heard it
- 26:50once. Take your time. Merrick, she said
- 26:54suddenly opening her eyes. That was it.
- 26:57They said Merrick's money better clear
- 26:59or we walk.
- 27:00Merrick, does that mean anything to you?
- 27:03For one long second, Cole Harrison
- 27:05didn't breathe. The men around him saw
- 27:08it, saw the color drain out from behind
- 27:10that gray beard, saw the leader who
- 27:12never flinched go completely rigid, and
- 27:14every one of them knew in that instant
- 27:16that the name meant something. It meant
- 27:18something bad.
- 27:20Bear Diesel said carefully. You know
- 27:22that name. Cole stood up slow. His hands
- 27:25had curled into fists without him
- 27:26deciding to do it.
- 27:28Yeah, he said, I know it.
- 27:30Who is he? Cole looked out at the empty
- 27:32road at the rocks where six hired
- 27:34killers had waited to gun down his whole
- 27:36family, and his voice when it came out
- 27:38was low and terrible. Danny Merrick, he
- 27:41said, is a man I put in prison 11 years
- 27:43ago.
- 27:44Nobody spoke. He ran guns through a half
- 27:46the state, used a couple of our runs as
- 27:48cover without us knowing, dragged the
- 27:50club's name into it, and when it all
- 27:52came down, he tried to pin the whole
- 27:54thing on us to save his own neck.
- 27:56I'm the one who found the proof it was
- 27:58him. I'm the one who handed it over.
- 28:01Cole's jaw tightened. He swore in that
- 28:03courtroom he'd get every last one of us.
- 28:05I figured it was just talk. Man says a
- 28:08lot of things when they're dragging him
- 28:09out in cuffs. 11 years, Snake said
- 28:12quietly. You're telling me he waited 11
- 28:15years? He got out, Cole said. Must've
- 28:18got out. And the first thing he did he
- 28:20stopped because his throat had closed up
- 28:23and he had to force the rest through it.
- 28:25The first thing he did was send six men
- 28:27to wipe us off the map on an empty road
- 28:29where nobody'd ever find us. 22 of us.
- 28:32He wanted all 22.
- 28:34The silence after that had weight to it,
- 28:36and then Emily said the thing that made
- 28:38all of them turn. Then he's going to try
- 28:40again.
- 28:41Cole looked at her. He is, she said. If
- 28:44he waited 11 years, if he paid all that
- 28:46money, if he wanted all of you and he
- 28:48didn't get any of you, you think he
- 28:50stops now? He's going to find out it
- 28:52failed and he's going to try again.
- 28:55And next time he'll know you're
- 28:56expecting it.
- 28:58Diesel let out a long breath. The kid's
- 29:00right.
- 29:01The kid, Cole said, keeps being right.
- 29:04He looked down at her, this 17-year-old
- 29:06who'd been sleeping under a bridge that
- 29:08morning and had somehow in the space of
- 29:10one afternoon walked straight into the
- 29:12middle of an 11-year-old blood feud and
- 29:14seen the shape of it faster than any of
- 29:16them.
- 29:17How do you do that? He asked her. It
- 29:19wasn't really a question.
- 29:21How do you see all this so clear?
- 29:23Emily looked down at her hands. When
- 29:25you've got nothing, she said, and
- 29:27nobody's coming to help you, you get
- 29:29real good at seeing what's about to
- 29:31happen because seeing it coming is the
- 29:33only thing that keeps you alive.
- 29:35She looked back up at him.
- 29:37I've been watching for the next bad
- 29:39thing for 2 years. It's just what I do
- 29:41now. I can't turn it off. And Cole
- 29:43thought 2 years. 2 years of a child
- 29:46watching every shadow, reading every
- 29:47stranger, bracing for the next blow all
- 29:49alone.
- 29:502 years of the skill that had just saved
- 29:5222 lives being ground into her by a
- 29:55world that couldn't be bothered to save
- 29:56one.
- 29:57Well, he said, and his voice was rough.
- 30:00From today on, you're not watching
- 30:02alone. You got 22 of us watching with
- 30:04you now and a couple of us are real good
- 30:07at making bad things stop before they
- 30:08start. Something crossed her face. Hope
- 30:11maybe fighting with the part of her that
- 30:13had learned never to believe a promise
- 30:15because every promise she'd ever been
- 30:18given had been broken.
- 30:20You don't have to do that, she said. I
- 30:22told you where the trap was. That's you
- 30:24don't owe me anything. I didn't do it so
- 30:26you I know why you did it, Cole said.
- 30:29That's exactly why we're not letting you
- 30:31walk off into that desert alone because
- 30:33you didn't do it for anything.
- 30:35You did it because it was right and you
- 30:37had nothing and you gave everything
- 30:39anyway.
- 30:40He shook his head slowly.
- 30:42You know how rare that is, kid? You know
- 30:45how many people I've met in 52 years who
- 30:47do what you did today? I can count them
- 30:49on one hand. And most of them are
- 30:51standing on this ridge right now." Emily
- 30:53didn't have an answer for that. Her
- 30:55mouth opened and closed.
- 30:57"Bear!" Torres called out. He was
- 30:59standing over by the ditch over the man
- 31:01he'd taken down, and his voice had an
- 31:03edge to it. "You're going to want to see
- 31:05this. This one's still breathing, and
- 31:07he's talking."
- 31:09The whole group moved. The man in the
- 31:11ditch was hurt,
- 31:13but conscious and scared.
- 31:15Scared in the particular way of a man
- 31:17who'd expected to be on the winning side
- 31:19and was now looking up at a ring of the
- 31:20people he'd been hired to murder.
- 31:22Torres had taken his rifle and stood
- 31:24over him with it. Cole crouched down.
- 31:27"You know who I am?" he asked.
- 31:29The man nodded, jaw clenched. "Then you
- 31:31know I got no reason to be gentle. So,
- 31:34here's how this goes. You tell me about
- 31:35Merrick, where he is, how to reach him,
- 31:38what the plan was after this, and maybe
- 31:40you walk out of this desert on your own
- 31:42two feet. You lie to me or you clam up,
- 31:45and I let my boys decide what happens to
- 31:47a man who came out here to gun down my
- 31:50family."
- 31:52Cole's voice never rose. That was the
- 31:54terrifying part.
- 31:55"You want to test whether I'm bluffing?"
- 31:57The man's eyes flicked around the ring
- 31:59of faces and found no mercy in any of
- 32:01them.
- 32:02"He's not here," the man said finally.
- 32:04"Merrick, he didn't come. He never
- 32:07comes. He pays and he watches from
- 32:08somewhere safe."
- 32:10"Watches how?" The man hesitated, and
- 32:13Torres shifted the rifle, and the man
- 32:14talked fast.
- 32:16"One of us was supposed to send a photo
- 32:18after.
- 32:19Proof it was done. He wanted a photo of
- 32:21all of you before we He said he wanted
- 32:23to see it. Said he'd waited too long not
- 32:25to see it." Something ugly moved through
- 32:27the whole group at that.
- 32:29"So, he's expecting a photo," Cole said.
- 32:32"And when he doesn't get one,
- 32:34then he knows it went wrong." The man
- 32:36swallowed. "And he moves to the backup.
- 32:39Cole went very still. What backup? I
- 32:41don't know the details. I swear I don't.
- 32:44All I know is he said if the road didn't
- 32:46work, he had another way in. Something
- 32:48closer. Somebody on the inside. The
- 32:51man's eyes were pleading now.
- 32:53That's all he told us. That's
- 32:55everything. Somebody on the inside.
- 32:58The words landed like a dropped stone.
- 33:00Somebody on the inside. Cole stood up
- 33:02slow and he looked around the ridge at
- 33:0421 faces he trusted with his life. For
- 33:06years at Bravo's he'd bled beside and
- 33:09for the first time in a very long time,
- 33:11a cold and terrible doubt crept into his
- 33:13chest. Because a man on the inside meant
- 33:16one of these faces might not be what it
- 33:18seemed.
- 33:19And every man there felt it land. Felt
- 33:21the leader's eyes pass over them. Felt
- 33:23for one awful second the trust that held
- 33:25the whole club together shiver like it
- 33:27might crack. Bear Diesel said low,
- 33:30"Don't. Don't let him do that. That's
- 33:32exactly what a man like Merrick wants.
- 33:35He wants us looking at each other
- 33:37instead of at him.
- 33:38He plants one word inside and suddenly
- 33:41we're all wondering and the club eats
- 33:42itself. That's the real trap. Not the
- 33:45road.
- 33:46This."
- 33:47Cole knew he was right. He knew it in
- 33:49his bones. And still the doubt was there
- 33:52and he hated it and he hated Merrick for
- 33:54putting it there.
- 33:55It was Emily who broke it.
- 33:57"He's lying." She said. Everyone looked
- 33:59at her. She was staring down at the man
- 34:02in the ditch and her tired blue eyes had
- 34:03gone sharp and certain. "Not
- 34:05[clears throat] about everything." She
- 34:06said.
- 34:07"But about that. The inside part. Watch
- 34:10his face."
- 34:11She crouched down closer than Cole liked
- 34:13but he let her.
- 34:15"You didn't hear that from Merrick, did
- 34:16you?" She said to the man. "You're
- 34:18saying it because you're scared and you
- 34:20think if you make it sound like there's
- 34:23more we'll keep you alive to find out.
- 34:25You made it up just now. I saw you make
- 34:27it up." The man's face did something. A
- 34:30flicker. A tell. And every man on that
- 34:33ridge saw it because now they were
- 34:35looking for it.
- 34:36"I," he started, "you don't know
- 34:38anything about an inside man." Emily
- 34:40said gentle and merciless at the same
- 34:42time.
- 34:43"You just wanted us to think you did,
- 34:45because information is the only thing
- 34:47keeping you breathing and you ran out of
- 34:49real information about 30 seconds ago."
- 34:52The man's shoulders sagged and in that
- 34:54collapse was the confession plain as
- 34:56day. Cole let out a breath and with it
- 34:58went the poison that had almost gotten
- 35:00into the club.
- 35:01"How," he said to Emily, "did you know
- 35:04that?" She stood back up and dusted off
- 35:06her knees and there was something almost
- 35:08sad in the way she said it. "Because
- 35:10I've done it," she said simply.
- 35:12"When somebody bigger than you has all
- 35:14the power and you've got nothing,
- 35:16sometimes the only card you've got is
- 35:18making them think you know something
- 35:20they need.
- 35:21I've bluffed men twice his size to stay
- 35:23alive. I know exactly what it looks like
- 35:26from the outside now
- 35:28because I've felt it from the inside."
- 35:30She shrugged and it broke Cole's heart a
- 35:32little that shrug. "It's not a nice
- 35:34thing to be good at."
- 35:36For a moment nobody said anything. Then
- 35:38Diesel, huge, bald, hot-tempered Diesel
- 35:40who'd called her bait an hour ago, said
- 35:42something none of them expected.
- 35:44"Kid," he said quietly, "I'm sorry for
- 35:47what I said back on the road, calling
- 35:49you bait, saying you were part of it."
- 35:52He rubbed the back of his cheek awkward
- 35:54as a boy. "I was wrong. I've never been
- 35:57more wrong about a person in my life."
- 35:59Emily looked at him surprised and then
- 36:01she did something that surprised all of
- 36:03them. She smiled, a small, tired, real
- 36:06smile, the first one any of them had
- 36:08seen from her.
- 36:09"You were right to be careful," she
- 36:11said. "A girl jumps in front of your
- 36:12bikes in the middle of nowhere, you
- 36:14should be careful.
- 36:15That's smart. That's how you stay
- 36:17alive."
- 36:18Then the smile turned wry. "I just
- 36:20happened to be telling the truth."
- 36:22Diesel let out a bark of laughter,
- 36:24surprised out of him, and just like that
- 36:26some of the terrible weight lifted off
- 36:28the ridge, and a couple of the other men
- 36:30were smiling, too. And the club felt
- 36:33like a club again, instead of a group of
- 36:35frightened men. But Cole wasn't smiling,
- 36:38because the real problem hadn't gone
- 36:40anywhere. None of this changes the fact,
- 36:42he said, and the group quieted. That
- 36:45Danny Merrick is out there. He's got
- 36:46money, and in about an hour, he's going
- 36:49to figure out this didn't work. Emily's
- 36:51right about that, even if this fool's
- 36:53lying about the rest. Merrick's not
- 36:55going to quit. So, the question isn't
- 36:57whether he tries again.
- 36:59It's when, Snake finished. And where,
- 37:01Cole said. And how, and whether we're
- 37:03going to sit around waiting to find out,
- 37:05or whether we go find him first. That
- 37:07landed hard. A few of the men shifted.
- 37:09Go find him, Cutter repeated. You mean
- 37:12go after Merrick, on purpose? I mean,
- 37:14I'm not going to spend the next 11 years
- 37:16wondering which empty road he's waiting
- 37:18on.
- 37:19Cole's voice was iron now. He came for
- 37:21all of us. He came for my family.
- 37:24I'm not going to let my brothers ride
- 37:26around this state looking over their
- 37:27shoulders forever, because one coward
- 37:30with a grudge and a checkbook decided we
- 37:32should die.
- 37:33We find him. We end it. Clean and legal,
- 37:36if we can, but we end it. And how do we
- 37:38find a man like that, Diesel asked.
- 37:41Guy's been planning this from a prison
- 37:43cell for 11 years. He's not going to be
- 37:45sitting in a diner waiting orders.
- 37:47Cole didn't answer right away. And then
- 37:49slowly, every man on that ridge realized
- 37:51he wasn't looking at Diesel.
- 37:53He was looking at Emily.
- 37:55No, she said, immediately understanding
- 37:57before he'd said a word. You heard them
- 37:59talk. Cole said gently.
- 38:02You heard things nobody else heard.
- 38:04You catch things the rest of us miss.
- 38:06You've been catching them all afternoon.
- 38:09You're not part of this fight, kid. I'd
- 38:10never make you part of this fight.
- 38:13But you need someone who sees what's
- 38:15coming, she finished for him. Quiet.
- 38:18You need someone who spent every day for
- 38:212 years watching for the next bad thing.
- 38:23Cole didn't confirm it. He didn't have
- 38:25to. Emily looked around the ring of
- 38:27faces, at Diesel who'd apologized, at
- 38:30Torres standing guard, at Snake and
- 38:32Cutter and 18 more men she hadn't even
- 38:35learned the names of yet, at all of them
- 38:37alive because of her, all of them
- 38:39looking at her now, not with pity, not
- 38:41with suspicion, but with something she
- 38:44had no name for because she'd never been
- 38:46on the receiving end of it before.
- 38:48They were looking at her like she
- 38:49mattered, like her being there made them
- 38:51safer, like she belonged. And that was
- 38:54the thing that broke her finally in a
- 38:56way the gunfire hadn't. "I don't have
- 38:58anywhere else to be," she said, and her
- 39:00voice cracked in the middle of it, and
- 39:02she laughed at herself for it wet-eyed.
- 39:05"That's the joke. That's the whole joke
- 39:07of it. You're asking me like it's some
- 39:09big thing to ask, like I've got a life
- 39:11to get back to, and I've got nothing.
- 39:13I've got a backpack with nothing in it
- 39:15and shoes that aren't shoes and a bridge
- 39:17I sleep under.
- 39:18So, yeah. Yeah, I'll help you because
- 39:21for the first time in two years somebody
- 39:23actually wants me around, and I'm not
- 39:25I'm not stupid enough to walk away from
- 39:27that." Cole crossed the space between
- 39:29them and put both his big hands on her
- 39:31shoulders, and he looked her right in
- 39:33the eyes. "You listen to me," he said.
- 39:35"You're going to help us because you're
- 39:37the smartest person on this ridge, and
- 39:39we'd be fools not to have you. But
- 39:41that's not why you're coming with us."
- 39:43His grip tightened gentle but sure.
- 39:46"You're coming with us because you're
- 39:47one of us now, and we don't leave our
- 39:49own behind. That was true the second you
- 39:52stepped in front of those bikes. Merrick
- 39:54or no Merrick, you understand me?"
- 39:56Emily nodded because she couldn't speak.
- 39:59"Say it," Cole said. Same as he'd said
- 40:01on the road an hour and a lifetime ago.
- 40:04"I'm one of you now," she whispered.
- 40:06"That's right." He let go of her
- 40:08shoulders. "That's exactly right." And
- 40:10then out across the desert, faint but
- 40:12unmistakable, came the sound of an
- 40:14engine.
- 40:15Not a motorcycle. Everyone knew the
- 40:17difference instantly. This was a truck
- 40:19coming down the same highway they'd come
- 40:21in on from the same direction moving
- 40:23fast. 22 people went dead silent and
- 40:26turned toward the sound. Torres was the
- 40:28first to put it together. The photo, he
- 40:30said, the one Merrick wanted. Somebody's
- 40:33coming to take the photo or
- 40:36or Merrick sent somebody to check why
- 40:37the phone went quiet, Cole finished. The
- 40:40truck was getting closer and whoever was
- 40:43in it had no idea that the trap had
- 40:44failed. No idea that the six hired guns
- 40:47were scattered and beaten.
- 40:49>> [clears throat]
- 40:49>> No idea that the 22 men they'd expected
- 40:51to find dead in the road were instead
- 40:53very much alive, very much armed, and
- 40:56very much done being hunted.
- 40:58Cole's face hardened into something
- 41:00Emily hadn't seen yet. Everybody off the
- 41:02ridge, he said quietly, back to the
- 41:04bikes. Now. Nobody makes a sound. He
- 41:08turned to Emily last and put a hand on
- 41:10her back steering her down the slope
- 41:12with the rest of them.
- 41:13Stay in the middle of us. Whatever's in
- 41:15that truck, it goes through us before it
- 41:17gets anywhere near you. And as 22 people
- 41:19melted down off that ridge and back
- 41:21toward the silent motorcycles, as the
- 41:24truck's engine grew louder and closer in
- 41:25the fading light, Emily Carter looked up
- 41:28at the man leading her into the middle
- 41:29of a war that had started 11 years
- 41:31before she was ever there and understood
- 41:33with the same clear certainty that had
- 41:35kept her alive for two years that she
- 41:37had just stopped being alone.
- 41:39Whatever was coming down that road, she
- 41:42wasn't going to face it by herself ever
- 41:43again. The truck slowed as it reached
- 41:45the stretch of road where the trap had
- 41:47been set and Cole crouched behind his
- 41:50motorcycle with 21 men fanned out silent
- 41:52around him.
- 41:53Watched it roll to a stop right on top
- 41:55of the buried spikes. Whoever was
- 41:57driving didn't know the spikes were
- 41:59there.
- 42:00That told Cole something.
- 42:02This wasn't one of the shooters coming
- 42:04back. This was somebody who'd been told
- 42:06a road not shown it.
- 42:08The truck door opened. One man got out.
- 42:10Just one. He was younger than Cole
- 42:12expected. Clean clothes. A phone in his
- 42:15hand already raised, already looking for
- 42:17the thing he'd been sent to photograph,
- 42:1822 dead bikers in the road.
- 42:21And there was nothing. Empty pavement,
- 42:23empty rocks, no bodies, no blood,
- 42:27nothing that was supposed to be there.
- 42:29Cole watched the man's face change as he
- 42:31understood. Watched the phone lower an
- 42:33inch.
- 42:34Watched him turn a slow circle and start
- 42:36to realize that if the thing that was
- 42:38supposed to be here wasn't here, then
- 42:40the 22 men who were supposed to be dead
- 42:43were somewhere very much alive.
- 42:45"Now," Cole said, barely a breath, "22
- 42:48people rose up out of the brush at
- 42:50once." The man dropped his phone. He
- 42:53didn't run.
- 42:54There was nowhere to run. He was
- 42:56surrounded before his brain even caught
- 42:57up. He just froze, hands coming up, face
- 43:00going the color of old paper.
- 43:02>> [snorts]
- 43:02>> "Don't," Cole said, walking toward him,
- 43:04slow.
- 43:06"Don't move. Don't reach. Don't do
- 43:08anything but talk. You understand me?"
- 43:11The man nodded fast. "Who sent you?"
- 43:14"I I don't "Wrong answer."
- 43:17Cole was 3 ft away now.
- 43:19"You came out here to take a picture of
- 43:20my dead brothers.
- 43:22That means you know exactly who sent
- 43:24you. So, I'm going to ask you one more
- 43:26time, and how you answer decides
- 43:28everything that happens to you in the
- 43:30next 10 minutes. Who sent you?"
- 43:33The man's eyes went around the ring of
- 43:35faces and found the same thing the
- 43:36shooter in the ditch had found.
- 43:38No way out. "Merrick," he choked. "Danny
- 43:41Merrick. He I just take pictures. Okay,
- 43:44I don't I'm not a shooter. I don't hurt
- 43:46people. He just pays me to document
- 43:48things. That's all. He wanted proof it
- 43:51got done. He said there would be bodies.
- 43:53He said all I had to do was
- 43:55"Where is he?" Cole's voice cut through
- 43:56it. "Merrick, where is he right now?" "I
- 43:59don't know." "You just talked to him.
- 44:01You just drove out here on his orders.
- 44:04Don't tell me you don't know." "I don't
- 44:05know where he lives. I swear I only ever
- 44:08meet him at
- 44:09The man stopped himself and Cole saw it.
- 44:12Saw the man realize he'd said too much.
- 44:15At where? Cole said softly. The man's
- 44:17mouth closed and that was when Emily
- 44:20stepped forward.
- 44:21Cole caught her arm.
- 44:23Kid, it's okay. She said it quietly and
- 44:26there was something in her voice that
- 44:27made him let go. She walked up to the
- 44:29man, this skinny girl in the torn
- 44:31jacket, and she looked at him not with
- 44:33menace, but with something almost like
- 44:35recognition.
- 44:36You're not like the others, she said,
- 44:38the ones in the rocks. They were
- 44:40killers. You're not. You're just a guy
- 44:43who takes money to look the other way
- 44:45while other people do the killing. She
- 44:47tilted her head. How long you been
- 44:49working for him? The man blinked at her,
- 44:51thrown. A couple months.
- 44:54And in a couple months you never once
- 44:56asked what the pictures were for.
- 44:58You just took them. It's not my business
- 45:00what It became your business the second
- 45:03you drove out here expecting 22 dead
- 45:06bodies and you didn't turn around, Emily
- 45:08said.
- 45:09Not cruel, just true. You knew. Maybe
- 45:11you told yourself you didn't, but you
- 45:14knew what you were coming to take a
- 45:15picture of.
- 45:16And you came anyway, because looking the
- 45:19other way pays and you'd rather have the
- 45:21money than the truth.
- 45:23The man couldn't hold her eyes. I know
- 45:25what that's like, she said and her voice
- 45:27changed, went quiet and private and
- 45:29every man on that road went still to
- 45:30listen. I've watched a hundred people
- 45:33look the other way from the ground when
- 45:35I needed help and they had somewhere to
- 45:37be.
- 45:38It's the easiest thing in the world,
- 45:40isn't it, to decide it's not your
- 45:42business?
- 45:43To keep walking,
- 45:45to take the picture and not think about
- 45:47the body.
- 45:49She stepped closer.
- 45:50But here's the thing you don't know yet
- 45:52because you're still young enough to not
- 45:55know it. It follows you. Every time you
- 45:58looked away, it stays with you.
- 46:00And one day you're going to be my age or
- 46:02his age. She nodded at Cole.
- 46:05And you're going to add it all up, all
- 46:06the times you could have done something
- 46:08and didn't, and it's going to be the
- 46:10heaviest thing you carry. The road was
- 46:12dead silent. So, here's your one chance,
- 46:14Emily said, to not be that guy. Where do
- 46:17you meet Merrick?
- 46:18The man looked at her for a long moment,
- 46:21and something in him broke, not from
- 46:22fear this time, but from being seen from
- 46:24a starving girl reaching into him and
- 46:26finding the last soft place he had left.
- 46:28There's a garage, he said, off the old
- 46:31county road north of town. Auto shop
- 46:33looks closed down, but it's not. That's
- 46:35where he runs everything. That's where I
- 46:38dropped the pictures. He'll be there
- 46:40tonight. He told me to bring the proof
- 46:42straight there. Said he'd be waiting up
- 46:44for it. The man swallowed. He's not
- 46:47going to wait long before he knows
- 46:49something went wrong.
- 46:51I was supposed to be back an hour ago.
- 46:53Cole and Diesel exchanged a look over
- 46:55the man's head.
- 46:57An hour ago, Cole repeated. Then he
- 46:59already knows, Emily said quietly. He's
- 47:01already figuring it out.
- 47:03Which means he's already moving.
- 47:05Cole turned to his men. This is it. This
- 47:07is the whole thing. We know where he is
- 47:09and we've got maybe a couple hours
- 47:10before he decides the garage isn't safe
- 47:12and disappears again for another 11
- 47:14years.
- 47:15We move now or we lose him. Bear.
- 47:18It was Snake.
- 47:20We go after Merrick at his own place on
- 47:21his own ground. We don't know what he's
- 47:24got waiting.
- 47:25Could be more hired guns. Could be a lot
- 47:27worse than six.
- 47:29I know.
- 47:30And we've got a 17-year-old kid with us.
- 47:32Everybody looked at Emily. I know that,
- 47:34too, Cole said. He turned to her. And
- 47:37that's where you get off this train,
- 47:39kid. This next part isn't for you. You
- 47:41got us this far. You got us further than
- 47:44we had any right to get. But I'm not
- 47:47riding a child into a gunfight with a
- 47:49man like Danny Merrick. That's where I
- 47:51draw the line.
- 47:53Emily was already shaking her head.
- 47:55You need me, too. I need you alive, Cole
- 47:58said, and it came out harder than he
- 48:00meant it, rough with something he didn't
- 48:01have a name for.
- 48:03"You hear me? An hour ago, I didn't know
- 48:04you existed. And already the idea of you
- 48:07catching a bullet in some garage because
- 48:09of my war, a war that's got nothing to
- 48:12do with you, I can't. I won't. So, don't
- 48:15ask me to." Emily stared at him, and
- 48:17Cole saw her understand slowly that he
- 48:19wasn't talking to her like a tool he
- 48:21needed anymore. He was talking to her
- 48:23like a man afraid of losing something.
- 48:26"Then what do I do?" she asked small.
- 48:28"You go somewhere safe with two of my
- 48:30men, and you wait." He softened. "And
- 48:33when it's done, we come back for you.
- 48:36All of us. I give you my word."
- 48:38"People break their word." she said. It
- 48:40wasn't an accusation, it was just the
- 48:42truth she'd learned. "Not this people."
- 48:44Diesel said before Cole could. "Not this
- 48:47club. You'll learn that." "Bear says
- 48:50he's coming back for you. He's coming
- 48:52back for you or he's coming back in a
- 48:54box. Those are the only two ways it
- 48:55goes."
- 48:57Emily looked around at all of them, and
- 48:59Cole watched the war on her face, two
- 49:01years of learning that every promise was
- 49:03a lie up against 22 men who just proven
- 49:05in the space of an afternoon that some
- 49:07promises weren't.
- 49:10"Okay." she said finally, barely. But it
- 49:12was the man from the truck who changed
- 49:14everything.
- 49:16"You're going to walk into that garage
- 49:17and get slaughtered." he said.
- 49:19They all turned. He'd found something in
- 49:21himself in the last few minutes.
- 49:23Maybe it was Emily's words. Maybe
- 49:25[clears throat] it was just a man
- 49:27deciding at the last possible second
- 49:29which side of a line he wanted to be on.
- 49:31"Merrick's not stupid. If he knows the
- 49:33road failed, he's not just going to sit
- 49:35in that garage and wait for you. He's
- 49:37going to assume you might come, and he's
- 49:39got a way to know if anyone's coming."
- 49:42The man's voice dropped. "There's
- 49:44cameras all over the county road leading
- 49:46up to the garage. He watches them from
- 49:48inside. You come up that road on 22
- 49:51motorcycles, he sees you a mile out, and
- 49:54he's either gone or he's ready. Either
- 49:56way you lose. Cole's jaw tightened. Then
- 49:59how do we get to him?
- 50:00You can't, not up the road, not the way
- 50:02he expects. The man hesitated, and then
- 50:05he said the thing that turned the whole
- 50:07night. But I can. He's expecting me.
- 50:10He's expecting my truck coming up that
- 50:12county road right now, an hour late with
- 50:14the pictures. He looked at the ground. I
- 50:17could drive up like nothing's wrong, and
- 50:19I could bring whatever's in the back of
- 50:20my truck.
- 50:22For a second, nobody understood.
- 50:24And then everybody did at once. You'd
- 50:27hide us, Diesel said slowly, in the
- 50:29truck. He's watching for motorcycles.
- 50:32He's not watching for his own guy coming
- 50:34home late. The man wouldn't meet
- 50:35anyone's eyes. It's the only way you get
- 50:38close before he sees you. That's That's
- 50:40what I can do. That's the picture I can
- 50:42take this time.
- 50:44Cole studied him for a long moment. Why,
- 50:46he said, an hour ago you were his man.
- 50:49Why turn now?
- 50:50The man looked at Emily. Because she's
- 50:53right, he said quietly, about the
- 50:55looking away. I've been doing it for
- 50:57years, and I'm real tired of how heavy
- 50:59it's gotten. He [clears throat] shrugged
- 51:01helpless.
- 51:02Figured maybe it's time to carry
- 51:04something else instead.
- 51:05The road was quiet. And Emmeline, who
- 51:08had spent two years believing that
- 51:09people never changed, that everyone who
- 51:12could help would always always look
- 51:13away,
- 51:15Emily watched the man decide to be
- 51:16better because of something she'd said,
- 51:18and felt something shift in her chest
- 51:21that she couldn't have explained if she
- 51:22tried.
- 51:23Okay, Cole said finally. Okay, but if
- 51:26you're playing us, if this is one more
- 51:28trap, It's not. Then you'll be the first
- 51:31one who finds out how the angels handle
- 51:33a man who plays them. We clear? Clear.
- 51:37Cole turned to organize it, and that was
- 51:39when Emily said the words that stopped
- 51:40him cold. I'm coming in the truck. No,
- 51:43Cole said without even turning around.
- 51:45Listen to me first. She grabbed his arm
- 51:48and made him turn.
- 51:49You said he's got cameras.
- 51:51You said he watches everything.
- 51:53If he's paranoid enough to have cameras
- 51:55all down that road, then when the truck
- 51:57pulls up, he's going to be watching that
- 51:59truck close. He's going to be looking
- 52:01for anything wrong. And you know what
- 52:03looks wrong? She jabbed a finger at the
- 52:05man from the truck.
- 52:07Him. Pulling up an hour late, sweating,
- 52:09scared out of his mind, alone. Merrick's
- 52:11going to take one look at his face on
- 52:13that camera and know something's off
- 52:15before the truck even stops. The man
- 52:17from the truck went pale because she was
- 52:19right and he knew it. But
- 52:21Emily pressed on. You know what doesn't
- 52:23look wrong? What looks completely
- 52:25normal? A guy coming back from a job
- 52:27with a scared homeless girl in the
- 52:28passenger seat.
- 52:30She let that land.
- 52:32You think Merrick's never had somebody
- 52:33grab a witness? A girl who saw too much
- 52:36on that road? He sees me in the truck,
- 52:38terrified, hands tied, he doesn't think
- 52:40ambush. He thinks they cleaned up a
- 52:43loose end and brought her to me.
- 52:45He thinks it went right. It's the most
- 52:47normal thing in the world for that truck
- 52:49to come back with a scared girl in it.
- 52:51It's cover.
- 52:53I'm the reason he doesn't look too close
- 52:54at the back of the truck. I'm the reason
- 52:56it works. Silence.
- 52:58And the worst part, the part that made
- 53:00Cole's stomach turn, was that it was
- 53:02brilliant. It was exactly right. It was
- 53:05the difference between the plan working
- 53:07and the plan getting all of them killed.
- 53:10"No," he said again, but it was weaker
- 53:12now.
- 53:13You know I'm right. I know you're 17."
- 53:16Cole's voice cracked. "I know that an
- 53:18hour ago you were nobody's problem, and
- 53:20now you're standing here volunteering to
- 53:23ride into a garage owned by a man who
- 53:24wants everyone I love dead, and I" He
- 53:27stopped, ran a hand down his face.
- 53:30"You want to know the truth, kid?
- 53:32The truth is I'd rather lose Merrick.
- 53:34I'd rather he get away. I'd rather spend
- 53:36the next 11 years watching my back than
- 53:38put you in that truck.
- 53:40That's the truth. That's how fast it
- 53:43happened." Emily looked at him and for
- 53:45[clears throat] the first time her eyes
- 53:46filled up not from fear, not from
- 53:48exhaustion, but from something else
- 53:50entirely. Something she hadn't felt in
- 53:53so long she'd forgotten the shape of it.
- 53:56"You mean that?" she said. "You'd let a
- 53:58man who tried to kill all of you walk
- 54:00free to keep me safe? A girl you met an
- 54:03hour ago?"
- 54:04"Yeah," Cole said. "I would."
- 54:06"Why? Why?" And Cole Harrison, 52 years
- 54:09old, who had a reputation that made
- 54:11strangers cross the street, who'd buried
- 54:13friends and broken bones, and stared
- 54:15down more danger than most men see in 10
- 54:17lifetimes, said the thing that had been
- 54:19building in his chest since the second
- 54:22she'd stepped in front of his bike.
- 54:23"Because somewhere out there," he said,
- 54:26"is a man who let you end up under a
- 54:28bridge. Somebody who was supposed to
- 54:30keep you safe and didn't. And I don't
- 54:33know who he is and I'll probably never
- 54:35meet him.
- 54:36But I know I'm not going to be another
- 54:38one. I'm not going to be one more grown
- 54:40man who let you walk into something bad
- 54:42and told himself it wasn't his
- 54:44business."
- 54:45His voice was thick.
- 54:46"You spent two years watching for the
- 54:48next bad thing all alone.
- 54:51Well, I'm the next thing now and I'm not
- 54:53bad and I'm not going to be the reason
- 54:55you get hurt.
- 54:56So, no. You're not going in that truck.
- 54:59Because I finally got the chance to be
- 55:01the person who didn't look away and I'm
- 55:03not going to blow it by handing you to
- 55:05Danny Merrick." The whole club was
- 55:07silent. Some of them had turned away
- 55:09because grown men don't like to be seen
- 55:11when their eyes go wet and more than a
- 55:12few of theirs had.
- 55:14Emily stood there and the tears spilled
- 55:16over and she didn't wipe them this time.
- 55:19"Nobody's ever said anything like that
- 55:21to me," she whispered, "in my whole
- 55:23life. Nobody."
- 55:25"Well," Cole said gruffly, "get used to
- 55:27it because you got 22 of us now and
- 55:30we're all going to be saying it and
- 55:31you're going to get real sick of hearing
- 55:33it." She laughed, wet and broken and
- 55:36real. And for a second, the whole
- 55:38terrible night lifted.
- 55:40And then she wiped her face and squared
- 55:41her thin shoulders and said the thing
- 55:43that told Cole exactly who she was all
- 55:46the way down.
- 55:47I'm still coming in the truck.
- 55:50Emily, no, you listen now. Her voice was
- 55:52steady. You just told me you'd let
- 55:55Merrick walk free to keep me safe.
- 55:57And I love you for it. I don't even know
- 55:59you and I love you for it because nobody
- 56:01ever chose me over anything before.
- 56:04But Cole, if you let him walk free, he
- 56:06doesn't stop.
- 56:07You said it yourself. He waited 11
- 56:10years. He'll wait 11 more. And someday,
- 56:12some empty road, he gets one of you.
- 56:15Maybe all of you. And I'll have to live
- 56:17the rest of my life knowing you had him.
- 56:20You had him tonight and you let him go
- 56:21for me. To keep me out of one truck.
- 56:25She shook her head. I can't carry that.
- 56:27I've watched people die because nobody
- 56:29stepped in.
- 56:31I'm not going to be the reason people I
- 56:33care about die because somebody stepped
- 56:35in too far for me when I could have
- 56:37helped and didn't. Cole stared at her.
- 56:40You'd risk your life, he said slowly, to
- 56:42make sure I don't lose one of mine.
- 56:44You already did it for me, she said
- 56:46simply. You stopped 22 motorcycles for a
- 56:48girl you didn't know.
- 56:50I stopped them first, remember?
- 56:52We're the same, you and me. We're
- 56:53exactly the same. We just can't walk
- 56:56away when somebody's about to get hurt.
- 56:59It's the thing that's wrong with both of
- 57:00us. She almost smiled. It's the only
- 57:03good thing I've got. Don't ask me to
- 57:05turn it off now. And Cole Harrison
- 57:07understood standing on that darkening
- 57:09road that he'd lost the argument the
- 57:11moment he'd started caring about her
- 57:12because she was made out of the exact
- 57:14same stubborn, self-sacrificing steel
- 57:17that he was. And asking her to stand
- 57:19down was asking her to be someone else.
- 57:22Diesel, he said finally, not taking his
- 57:24eyes off her.
- 57:26Yeah, Bear. In the back of that truck,
- 57:28you're closest to the passenger side. If
- 57:30anything goes wrong, anything, you come
- 57:32through that cab wall for her first
- 57:34before Merrick, before anything. She's
- 57:36the first thing you protect.
- 57:38You hear me?
- 57:39With my life, Diesel said. Cole turned
- 57:41back to Emily. This is the deal. You sit
- 57:44in that seat, you look scared, which
- 57:45won't be hard because you should be.
- 57:48You get them watching you instead of the
- 57:49truck. And the second the second that
- 57:52truck stops and the back opens up, you
- 57:54get down.
- 57:55Floor of the cab, hands over your head.
- 57:58You don't look up, you don't get out,
- 58:00you don't do one brave thing because
- 58:02you've done enough brave things for 10
- 58:04lifetimes today, and now it's our turn.
- 58:08Can you do that?
- 58:09Can you be still and let us protect you
- 58:11for once? Emily nodded. I can do that.
- 58:13Say it. I stay down. I let you protect
- 58:16me. [clears throat] It's your turn.
- 58:18That's right. Cole let out a long
- 58:21shaking breath.
- 58:22God help me, that's right. They loaded
- 58:24up fast because the man from the truck
- 58:27was right that every minute made Merrick
- 58:29more suspicious.
- 58:31Diesel and eight of the biggest, hardest
- 58:32men in the club climbed into the back of
- 58:34the truck and pulled a tarp over
- 58:36themselves, packed in tight and silent.
- 58:39The rest would follow at a distance on
- 58:40their bikes, engines off, coasting the
- 58:42last stretch, ready to come in the
- 58:44second it started.
- 58:45The man from the truck got behind the
- 58:47wheel, hands shaking on the keys. Hey,
- 58:50Emily said to him climbing into the
- 58:51passenger's seat. What's your name? He
- 58:54looked at her surprised.
- 58:56Nobody's asked me that all night. I'm
- 58:58asking.
- 58:59Reggie. Okay, Reggie.
- 59:01She settled into the seat and Cole
- 59:03watched through the open door as this
- 59:05girl who'd been terrified an hour ago
- 59:07made herself the calm one, the steady
- 59:09one for the sake of the frightened man
- 59:10beside her.
- 59:12You're doing the right thing.
- 59:14First time in a while, maybe.
- 59:16It's going to feel bad and scary the
- 59:18whole way there, and that's okay. That's
- 59:20just what doing the right thing feels
- 59:22like when you're out of practice.
- 59:24You keep driving anyway.
- 59:26Reggie's hand stopped shaking.
- 59:28a little. "How do you know all this?" he
- 59:30asked. "You're a kid."
- 59:33"I'm out of practice at a lot of
- 59:35things," Emily said quietly, "but not
- 59:37this one.
- 59:38This one I never stopped doing."
- 59:41She looked out the windshield at the
- 59:42dark road ahead, at the county road that
- 59:44led to a garage where an old enemy was
- 59:46waiting.
- 59:47"Even when it cost me everything."
- 59:50Cole shut the passenger door gently.
- 59:52Through the window he put his hand flat
- 59:54against the glass. Emily lifted hers and
- 59:56pressed it to the other side. "I'm
- 59:58coming right behind you," he said
- 1:00:00through the glass, "the whole way. You
- 1:00:02won't be able to see me, but I'm there.
- 1:00:04Ev- Every foot of that road I'm right
- 1:00:06there watching."
- 1:00:07"I know," she said. And the thing was,
- 1:00:09she believed it completely.
- 1:00:12For the first time in 2 years she said I
- 1:00:14know to a promise and believed it all
- 1:00:16the way down.
- 1:00:16>> [clears throat]
- 1:00:17>> The truck's engine turned over and as it
- 1:00:19pulled on way into the dark with a
- 1:00:21homeless girl in the passenger seat and
- 1:00:24eight-armed man hidden under a tarp
- 1:00:25behind her, Cole Harrison swung onto his
- 1:00:27motorcycle and 21 riders formed up
- 1:00:29silent behind him and they rolled out
- 1:00:31into the night after her engine's quiet
- 1:00:33headlights, dark hearts hammering, every
- 1:00:35single one of them mounting out to a
- 1:00:3717-year-old girl who'd walked into their
- 1:00:39lives that afternoon with nothing and
- 1:00:41had somehow become the one thing all 22
- 1:00:43of them would die before they'd lose.
- 1:00:46The county road unrolled in the dark and
- 1:00:48Emily kept her eyes forward and her
- 1:00:49hands in her lap and made herself into
- 1:00:51exactly what Merrick needed to see a
- 1:00:53scared girl caught delivered.
- 1:00:56It wasn't hard. She was scared.
- 1:00:58"First camera coming up," Reggie said
- 1:01:00under his breath, barely moving his
- 1:01:01lips.
- 1:01:02"On the pole. Don't look at it."
- 1:01:05"I won't." "He'll be watching now. Once
- 1:01:08we pass this one, he knows the truck's
- 1:01:09coming. He'll be at the screen." "Then
- 1:01:12let him watch," Emily said quietly. "Let
- 1:01:14him see the scared girl.
- 1:01:16Keep your eyes on the road, Reggie.
- 1:01:18You're just a guy driving home from a
- 1:01:20job. That's all you are. You've done
- 1:01:22this drive a hundred times.
- 1:01:24The truck rolled past the camera. Emily
- 1:01:26felt it go by like a cold hand across
- 1:01:29the back of her neck.
- 1:01:30Somewhere ahead in a garage that looked
- 1:01:32closed but wasn't, Danny Merrick was
- 1:01:34looking at a screen seeing this truck,
- 1:01:37seeing her. Behind them, hidden under
- 1:01:39the tarp, diesel and eight men lay dead
- 1:01:41still. And the only thing Emily could
- 1:01:42hear was her own heart.
- 1:01:44"Second camera," Reggie whispered.
- 1:01:46"Halfway there now.
- 1:01:48You're doing good."
- 1:01:49"I'm about to be sick." "Don't be sick.
- 1:01:52Be angry."
- 1:01:53Emily kept her voice low and even.
- 1:01:56"You spent months taking pictures for
- 1:01:57him.
- 1:01:58Whatever he had, you photograph.
- 1:02:00Whatever you told yourself you weren't
- 1:02:01seeing, you're about to make it right.
- 1:02:04Hold on to that. It's a lot easier to
- 1:02:06drive scared when you're driving towards
- 1:02:07something instead of away."
- 1:02:10Reggie's jaw set. His hands steadied on
- 1:02:12the wheel. And then, a quarter mile out,
- 1:02:14his phone rang. Both of them froze. The
- 1:02:16screen lit up in the console. One word,
- 1:02:19Merrick. "He never calls," Reggie
- 1:02:21breathed. "He never I drop the pictures
- 1:02:24and leave. He never calls me. Why is
- 1:02:26he?"
- 1:02:27"Answer it," Emily said instantly.
- 1:02:29"What?"
- 1:02:30"You don't answer. He knows something's
- 1:02:32wrong. Answer it. Put it on speaker so I
- 1:02:35can hear. And Reggie,"
- 1:02:37she grabbed his wrist. "Whatever he
- 1:02:39asks, you're an hour late because the
- 1:02:41road was a mess. That's all.
- 1:02:43You're tired and you're late and you've
- 1:02:45got the girl. Don't add anything. Don't
- 1:02:48explain too much. Guilty men explain too
- 1:02:50much." The phone rang a third time.
- 1:02:53Reggie answered. His voice came out
- 1:02:55rougher than his own.
- 1:02:56"Yeah."
- 1:02:57"You're late." The voice on the phone
- 1:02:59was quiet, patient. And somehow that
- 1:03:02patience was worse than shouting would
- 1:03:04have been.
- 1:03:05It was the voice of a man who had waited
- 1:03:07eleven years and knew exactly how to
- 1:03:09wait a little longer.
- 1:03:11"You're a whole hour late, Reggie."
- 1:03:13"Road was blocked," Reggie said. "Had to
- 1:03:15go around. There was It was a mess up
- 1:03:17there. Took forever to get clear.
- 1:03:20A pause. A mess, Merrick repeated. Yeah.
- 1:03:24You get my pictures.
- 1:03:26And there it was. The whole night
- 1:03:27balanced on one word. If Reggie said yes
- 1:03:30and Merrick asked to see them, it was
- 1:03:32over.
- 1:03:33If he said no, Merrick would want to
- 1:03:35know know why.
- 1:03:37Emily squeezed his wrist hard. She
- 1:03:39mouthed one word. Her.
- 1:03:41I got something better, Reggie said. I
- 1:03:44got the girl.
- 1:03:45Silence on the line. Long enough that
- 1:03:47Emily's heart climbed into her throat.
- 1:03:49What girl, Merrick said. The one who saw
- 1:03:52it. There was a witness on the road.
- 1:03:54Homeless kid been watching the whole
- 1:03:56time. The boys said to bring her to you
- 1:03:58instead of leaving a loose end out there
- 1:04:00for the cops to find.
- 1:04:02Reggie was sweating but his voice held.
- 1:04:04Figured you'd want to handle that
- 1:04:06yourself.
- 1:04:07The pause stretched out again.
- 1:04:09>> [clears throat]
- 1:04:09>> Emily could feel Merrick thinking on the
- 1:04:11other end. Could almost feel the
- 1:04:12paranoia turning it over. Looking for
- 1:04:14the wrong note in it.
- 1:04:16A witness, Merrick said slowly. She saw
- 1:04:18everything, face and all. You want me to
- 1:04:21just dump her somewhere? Your call. I
- 1:04:24brought her in case. And that was the
- 1:04:25master stroke. Emily saw it land even
- 1:04:28from her side of the phone.
- 1:04:29Reggie had made it Merrick's decision.
- 1:04:32A man that paranoid didn't trust things
- 1:04:34handed to him. But a problem he got to
- 1:04:36solve himself, a loose end he got to
- 1:04:38personally tie off that he'd want.
- 1:04:41Bring her, Merrick said. Pull around
- 1:04:43back. Same as always. And Reggie, yeah.
- 1:04:46If there's anything in that truck I
- 1:04:47don't like, you're the first one I put
- 1:04:49down.
- 1:04:50You understand me?
- 1:04:52The line went dead. Reggie let out a
- 1:04:54breath that shook the whole cab. He
- 1:04:56knows, he whispered. He knows
- 1:04:58something's wrong. That last part
- 1:05:00He suspects, Emily corrected. There's a
- 1:05:02difference. He suspects everything all
- 1:05:05the time. That's how he stayed alive. He
- 1:05:08said that to you to see if you'd flinch.
- 1:05:10She looked at him. Did you flinch?
- 1:05:13I don't I don't think so. Then keep
- 1:05:15driving. We're almost there. When you
- 1:05:17pull around back, you stop the truck.
- 1:05:19You get out slow and you come around to
- 1:05:21my door like you're getting me out. That
- 1:05:24puts you between me and him. Give the
- 1:05:26boys 3 seconds to hear the back open.
- 1:05:293 seconds, Reggie. That's all they need.
- 1:05:32She looked at the console clock, at the
- 1:05:34dark road, at the shape of a building
- 1:05:35coming up out of the night.
- 1:05:37You've been looking away your whole
- 1:05:38life. You've got one more minute of it
- 1:05:41and then you never have to look away
- 1:05:42again. And if I get shot Emily was quiet
- 1:05:45for a second. Then you'll have died
- 1:05:47looking right at it, she said, which is
- 1:05:49more than most people ever manage. But
- 1:05:51you're not going to get shot. You're
- 1:05:53going to do this one right and you're
- 1:05:54going to live and someday you're going
- 1:05:56to tell somebody about the night you
- 1:05:58stopped being a coward. Now drive.
- 1:06:01The truck rolled around the back of the
- 1:06:03garage and stopped. Under the tarp, nine
- 1:06:06men tensed. A quarter mile back, engine
- 1:06:08silent, 22 motorcycles coasted to a halt
- 1:06:11and Cole Harrison was off his bike and
- 1:06:13moving before it had fully stopped,
- 1:06:15closing the distance on foot. His heart
- 1:06:17a fist in his throat because his eyes
- 1:06:19were on that truck and the girl inside
- 1:06:21it and every step felt too slow.
- 1:06:24Reggie killed the engine. His hand shook
- 1:06:26on the door handle.
- 1:06:28Slow, Emily breathed. You've done this a
- 1:06:30hundred times. Slow. He got out. Left
- 1:06:33the door open behind him.
- 1:06:35Emily had told him to so the boys under
- 1:06:37the tarp could hear everything. His
- 1:06:39boots crunched on gravel as he came
- 1:06:41around the front of the truck and from
- 1:06:43the shadows of the garage a voice said,
- 1:06:45"Stop right there."
- 1:06:47Reggie stopped.
- 1:06:48Two men Emily hadn't seen stepped out of
- 1:06:50the dark. Not the hired guns from the
- 1:06:52road. These were closer in, quieter,
- 1:06:54more dangerous. And behind them,
- 1:06:56unhurried, came a third man. Emily knew
- 1:06:59it was Merrick before Reggie said a
- 1:07:00word. She'd spent 2 years reading people
- 1:07:03and everything about this man read the
- 1:07:04same. The stillness, the flat eyes, the
- 1:07:07way the other two orbited him like he
- 1:07:10was the thing that gravity bent around.
- 1:07:1211 years in a cell had carved him down
- 1:07:14to something hard and patient and wrong.
- 1:07:18"Where's the girl?" Maric said. "In the
- 1:07:20truck." Reggie said.
- 1:07:22"Passenger seat. She's tied up. She's
- 1:07:24scared. She's not going to Bring her
- 1:07:26out. You, not me."
- 1:07:28Maric's flat eyes went to the truck, to
- 1:07:30the passenger window, to Emily. She made
- 1:07:33herself small, made herself shake, made
- 1:07:37herself exactly what he expected. And
- 1:07:39the whole time her mind was racing
- 1:07:40because something was wrong. The men
- 1:07:43were spread too wide.
- 1:07:45Maric was standing too far back. This
- 1:07:47wasn't a man walking into a trap. This
- 1:07:48was a man who'd already smelled one.
- 1:07:51Reggie opened her door, reached in for
- 1:07:53her arm, and Maric said, "Stop."
- 1:07:56Reggie froze. "Her hands aren't tied."
- 1:07:58Maric said softly. The whole world
- 1:08:01stopped. Emily looked down at her own
- 1:08:03hands free in her lap and understood in
- 1:08:05one sick heartbeat the mistake Reggie
- 1:08:07had said she was tied up and she wasn't.
- 1:08:09And there hadn't been any rope in the
- 1:08:11truck. And now Maric was looking right
- 1:08:13at her free hands and his own were
- 1:08:14moving toward his belt. "Now!" Emily
- 1:08:17screamed. "Diesel, now!" The tarp
- 1:08:20exploded. Nine men came up out of the
- 1:08:22back of the truck in a single roaring
- 1:08:24surge, and the night came apart.
- 1:08:27Maric's two men spun toward the truck,
- 1:08:29but they were a half second too slow
- 1:08:31because they'd been braced for a scared
- 1:08:33girl and instead got Diesel and eight of
- 1:08:35the hardest men in the state coming over
- 1:08:37the tailgate like the wrath of God. "Get
- 1:08:39down!" Reggie shouted at Emily. And to
- 1:08:42his eternal credit, in the middle of the
- 1:08:43worst moment of his life, the coward did
- 1:08:46the bravest thing he'd ever done. He
- 1:08:47threw his own body across the open door
- 1:08:49between Emily and Maric and shoved her
- 1:08:51down into the footwell.
- 1:08:53A shot cracked.
- 1:08:55Reggie grunted and went down.
- 1:08:57"Reggie!" Emily screamed. But she stayed
- 1:08:59down, hands over her head, floor of the
- 1:09:01cab exactly like she'd promised Cole,
- 1:09:04exactly like she'd sworn even as her
- 1:09:06whole body screamed to get up and help,
- 1:09:09she stayed down because she'd given her
- 1:09:11word and because a man had just taken a
- 1:09:13bullet keeping his. Outside chaos,
- 1:09:16Diesel's voice roaring names, the two
- 1:09:18hired men going down fast under a wall
- 1:09:20of angels.
- 1:09:22And Merrick Merrick turning to run
- 1:09:24because that was what he did, that was
- 1:09:25what he'd always done. Hire it out and
- 1:09:28watch from safety and run in when it
- 1:09:29went wrong. He got three steps and Cole
- 1:09:32Harrison stepped out of the dark
- 1:09:34directly into his path. Merrick skidded
- 1:09:36to a stop and for the first time all
- 1:09:38night, all 11 years, the flat eyes
- 1:09:41changed. Because standing in front of
- 1:09:43him was the one man he'd built his whole
- 1:09:45revenge around. The man who'd put him
- 1:09:47away. Alive. Right there. Close enough
- 1:09:51to touch.
- 1:09:52"Hello, Danny." Cole said.
- 1:09:54Merrick's hand went for his belt. Cole
- 1:09:56was faster. He always had been. He
- 1:09:59caught Merrick's wrist and twisted and
- 1:10:01the gun spun off into the dark and then
- 1:10:03it was just two men, the way it should
- 1:10:06have been from the start, the way it
- 1:10:07should have been 11 years ago instead of
- 1:10:09a hired ambush on an empty road.
- 1:10:12"You sent six men." Cole said, driving
- 1:10:14him back against the wall of the garage
- 1:10:16to shoot 22 of my brothers off their
- 1:10:18bikes on a road in the middle of nowhere
- 1:10:21so no one would ever know." Merrick's
- 1:10:23flat calm cracked into something ugly.
- 1:10:26"You took 11 years from me. You took 11
- 1:10:28years from yourself."
- 1:10:30Cole's forearm was across the man's
- 1:10:32chest pinning him.
- 1:10:33"You ran guns under our name. You tried
- 1:10:36to hang us for it. I just told the
- 1:10:38truth." "And you spent 11 years in a
- 1:10:40cage nursing that instead of once, one
- 1:10:42single time, looking at yourself."
- 1:10:45His voice dropped.
- 1:10:47"You want to know the worst part? You
- 1:10:48almost got it. You were this close,
- 1:10:50Danny. 22 men, my whole family, you
- 1:10:54almost had them." "What stopped me?"
- 1:10:57Merrick bet. Your boys never saw the
- 1:10:59trap. I know they didn't. So what? A
- 1:11:02girl, Cole said.
- 1:11:04Merrick blinked. A 17-year-old girl with
- 1:11:06nothing to her name but a torn jacket
- 1:11:09and an empty backpack.
- 1:11:11Cole leaned in. You built 11 years of
- 1:11:14hate into a perfect trap and it got beat
- 1:11:16by a homeless kid you would have stepped
- 1:11:18over on the street.
- 1:11:20She's the one in that truck, Danny. The
- 1:11:22witness. The loose end.
- 1:11:25She's the reason every one of my
- 1:11:26brothers is alive and she walked into
- 1:11:29your garage tonight into your camera
- 1:11:31into your gun on purpose because she was
- 1:11:34afraid you'd get one of us someday if
- 1:11:35she didn't.
- 1:11:37His voice shook with something that
- 1:11:38wasn't quite rage.
- 1:11:40That's who beat you. Somebody the whole
- 1:11:42world threw away. Sit with that for the
- 1:11:44next 11 years. And then he stepped back
- 1:11:46and Diesel and Torres took Merrick's
- 1:11:48arms and it was done.
- 1:11:50Somebody call it in, Cole said his voice
- 1:11:52suddenly hollow with the aftermath.
- 1:11:55All of it. The road the shooter's this.
- 1:11:57Clean and legal, like I said. Let the
- 1:12:00law have him. He goes back in a cage
- 1:12:03where he can't reach anybody. He turned.
- 1:12:05Where's And then he was running. Emily.
- 1:12:09Emily. He hit the passenger door of the
- 1:12:11truck
- 1:12:12and there she was still down in the
- 1:12:13footwell.
- 1:12:14Hands over her head, shaking and half on
- 1:12:17top of her bleeding was Reggie. He shot.
- 1:12:20Emily was saying already up now.
- 1:12:22Already pressing both her small hands
- 1:12:24against the wound in Reggie's shoulder
- 1:12:26the way somebody had taught her once or
- 1:12:28the way she just figured out because
- 1:12:30that was who she was.
- 1:12:32He got between me and Merrick. He took
- 1:12:34the shot for me. Cole, he's bleeding.
- 1:12:37Get help. Get help. Torres, where? Cole
- 1:12:40roared. Medic Torres, get over here,
- 1:12:42man. Down. Gunshot. Torres was there in
- 1:12:45seconds, army hands moving fast and
- 1:12:47Emily didn't let go. Kept her weight on
- 1:12:49the wound while Torres worked this girl
- 1:12:51who'd been told to stay down and stay
- 1:12:53safe, now covered in another person's
- 1:12:55blood because she couldn't she
- 1:12:57physically could not watch somebody
- 1:12:59bleed and do nothing. He's going to be
- 1:13:01okay, Torres said finally, shoulder bad
- 1:13:04but he'll live. Kid, you kept pressure
- 1:13:06on it. That's why he's not worse. You
- 1:13:08did that.
- 1:13:10Emily looked down at Reggie, at the man
- 1:13:11who'd been Merrick's coward an hour ago
- 1:13:14and had ended the night taking a bullet
- 1:13:15for a girl he'd just met.
- 1:13:17You stayed, she whispered to him. You
- 1:13:20said you'd stay between me and him and
- 1:13:21you stayed.
- 1:13:23Reggie's eyes fluttered. Told you, he
- 1:13:25managed weak. Tired of looking away. And
- 1:13:28Emily Carter, 17 years old, who had
- 1:13:31learned in two brutal years that nobody
- 1:13:33ever chose her.
- 1:13:34That everyone always looked away, that
- 1:13:36promises were lies and kindness was a
- 1:13:39trick. Emily put her bloody hand over
- 1:13:41Reggie's and understood that everything
- 1:13:43she'd believed about the world had been
- 1:13:44wrong.
- 1:13:46Or not wrong, just incomplete. Because
- 1:13:48the world also had this in it. A man who
- 1:13:51chose to stay, a club that came back for
- 1:13:53her, a biker who'd rather lose his war
- 1:13:55than lose her. It's over, Cole said
- 1:13:58behind her softly.
- 1:14:00He put his hand on her shoulder.
- 1:14:01It's over, kid. He's done. He can't
- 1:14:04reach any of us ever again and it's
- 1:14:06because of you. All of it. Every man
- 1:14:09here is going home tonight because of
- 1:14:11you.
- 1:14:12Emily turned around and for a long
- 1:14:14moment she couldn't say anything at all
- 1:14:16because the things she was feeling
- 1:14:17didn't have a words. It was too big and
- 1:14:19too strange and she'd waited too long to
- 1:14:22feel it. I keep waiting for the part
- 1:14:24where it goes wrong, she finally said.
- 1:14:26The part where you all leave, where it
- 1:14:28turns out you didn't mean it. That's
- 1:14:30That's what always happens.
- 1:14:32Somebody's nice to you and then they're
- 1:14:33gone.
- 1:14:35I keep waiting for that part.
- 1:14:37Cole crouched down in front of her right
- 1:14:39there in the gravel, blood and all, and
- 1:14:41looked her dead in the eyes. That part's
- 1:14:43not coming, he said. You hear me? That
- 1:14:45part is never coming. There is no
- 1:14:47version of tonight where we ride off and
- 1:14:50leave you standing in a parking lot.
- 1:14:52That version doesn't exist.
- 1:14:54It never existed.
- 1:14:56He put both hands on her shoulders. You
- 1:14:58keep waiting for us to leave.
- 1:15:01Go ahead and wait. You're going to be
- 1:15:02waiting the rest of your life because
- 1:15:04we're not going anywhere and neither are
- 1:15:06you.
- 1:15:07You've got a family now, Emily. 22 of us
- 1:15:10and a family doesn't leave. The tears
- 1:15:12came then, all of them, two years of
- 1:15:14them and Emily didn't try to stop them
- 1:15:16and didn't try to hide them and didn't
- 1:15:18apologize for them and Cole just pulled
- 1:15:20her in and held on while she cried it
- 1:15:21all out against his shoulder. This
- 1:15:23enormous frightening man the whole world
- 1:15:26was scared of holding a crying girl in a
- 1:15:28parking lot like she was the most
- 1:15:29precious thing he'd ever been trusted
- 1:15:31with. Behind them the club stood in a
- 1:15:33loose ring and not one man looked away.
- 1:15:36When the siren started distant and
- 1:15:38growing, Emily finally pulled back and
- 1:15:40wiped her face. They're going to ask me
- 1:15:41a lot of questions, she said.
- 1:15:43The police. About who I am, where my
- 1:15:46parents are, where I've been living.
- 1:15:49Her voice went small and scared in a new
- 1:15:51way.
- 1:15:52They're going to want to put me
- 1:15:53somewhere, in the system.
- 1:15:56That's what happens to kids like me.
- 1:15:59And then
- 1:16:00and she looked up at Cole and the fear
- 1:16:02in her face now wasn't about Merrick or
- 1:16:05guns or ambushes. It was about the thing
- 1:16:08she'd finally let herself want being
- 1:16:09taken away the second she got it.
- 1:16:12And then you can't just I'm a minor and
- 1:16:14you're you can't just keep me. It
- 1:16:16doesn't work like that. They'll take me
- 1:16:19somewhere and I'll never Hey.
- 1:16:22Cole took her face in his rough hands.
- 1:16:24Look at me. You let me worry about that.
- 1:16:27You can't I've got a daughter, Emily,
- 1:16:29Cole said quietly and something in the
- 1:16:31way he said it stopped her cold. Grown
- 1:16:33now, barely see her and that's my own
- 1:16:36fault choices I made a long time ago.
- 1:16:38But I know how the world works and I
- 1:16:40know people and I know how to do a thing
- 1:16:43right and legal when it matters.
- 1:16:45And I have never wanted to do anything
- 1:16:47right as bad as I want to do this right.
- 1:16:49His thumbs wiped the tears off her
- 1:16:51cheeks.
- 1:16:52You are not going to disappear into any
- 1:16:54system.
- 1:16:55Maybe it takes time.
- 1:16:57Maybe it takes lawyers and papers and a
- 1:16:59judge. I don't care.
- 1:17:01However long it takes, whatever it
- 1:17:02costs, you are not facing one more day
- 1:17:05of this world alone.
- 1:17:06I will move heaven and earth. You
- 1:17:08understand me? Heaven and earth. Emily
- 1:17:10searched his face for the lie, for the
- 1:17:12trick, for the catch. There wasn't one.
- 1:17:15Why Chay?
- 1:17:16She whispered. The same question she'd
- 1:17:18been asking all night. Why me?
- 1:17:21Why do all this for me?
- 1:17:23And Cole Harrison, who'd spent 30 years
- 1:17:25being feared, gave her the truest answer
- 1:17:27he had. Because you asked all of us that
- 1:17:30same question tonight without saying a
- 1:17:32word. He said,
- 1:17:34"You stood in front of 22 motorcycles
- 1:17:36and every one of us thought, why would
- 1:17:38she do that? Why would a girl with
- 1:17:40nothing risk everything for strangers?
- 1:17:42And the answer was because somebody has
- 1:17:44to. Because when the world's about to
- 1:17:46hurt someone and everybody else looks
- 1:17:48away, somebody has to be the one who
- 1:17:51doesn't." His voice broke.
- 1:17:54You were that person for us.
- 1:17:56When we couldn't see the trap, you were
- 1:17:57the one who didn't look away. So now
- 1:18:00it's our turn. That's all this is, kid.
- 1:18:03That's the whole thing. You didn't look
- 1:18:04away from us. We're never going to look
- 1:18:06away from you. The sirens were close
- 1:18:08now. Emily looked around at them at
- 1:18:10Diesel, huge and gruff, who'd called her
- 1:18:12bait and now stood guard over her like a
- 1:18:15mountain. At Taurus, still keeping
- 1:18:17pressure on Reggie. At Snake and Cutter
- 1:18:20and 18 more. Every face turned toward
- 1:18:22her. Every one of them hers now. At
- 1:18:24Reggie alive, who'd found something in
- 1:18:27himself because of her. At Cole on his
- 1:18:29knees in the gravel holding her face
- 1:18:31like it mattered.
- 1:18:32And she stopped waiting for the part
- 1:18:34where it went wrong. Because she finally
- 1:18:36understood all the way down to the
- 1:18:37bottom of her that it wasn't coming.
- 1:18:39"Okay," she said. And this time when she
- 1:18:42said it, there was no fear in it and no
- 1:18:44bracing and no watching for the next bad
- 1:18:46thing.
- 1:18:47Just for the first time in 2 years, the
- 1:18:50smallest and most enormous thing in the
- 1:18:52world.
- 1:18:53Trust. The police kept Emily for 6 hours
- 1:18:56that night and Cole Harrison didn't
- 1:18:57leave the building once. They tried to
- 1:18:59make him. A detective told him three
- 1:19:02times that he wasn't family, that he had
- 1:19:03no standing, that he should go home. And
- 1:19:06three times Cole sat back down in the
- 1:19:07plastic chair in the hallway
- 1:19:10and said the same thing. "I'll be right
- 1:19:12here."
- 1:19:13He wasn't going to let her come out of
- 1:19:15her room and find an empty hallway. Not
- 1:19:17after tonight. Not ever. Inside, they
- 1:19:20asked Emily everything. Her full name,
- 1:19:22her birthday, where her parents were.
- 1:19:25And Emily, exhausted still in a jacket
- 1:19:27stuffed with Reggie's dried blood, told
- 1:19:29them the truth, all of it. In a flat,
- 1:19:31quiet voice she'd learned a long time
- 1:19:33ago. Her mother had died when she was
- 1:19:3514.
- 1:19:36Her father had a new wife by 15 who
- 1:19:38didn't want her and a temper that got
- 1:19:40worse when he drank and one night when
- 1:19:42Emily was 15 and a half, he'd told her
- 1:19:45to get out and not come back. And she'd
- 1:19:47believed him because he'd said it with
- 1:19:49his hands.
- 1:19:50She'd bounced between a shelter and a
- 1:19:52friend's couch and then the friend's
- 1:19:54family moved away and by 16 she was on
- 1:19:57the street and by 17 she'd stopped
- 1:19:59expecting anyone to come. "Nobody
- 1:20:01reported you missing," the detective
- 1:20:03said, checking something and Emily heard
- 1:20:06the surprise in his voice, the small,
- 1:20:08terrible surprise of a man who realizing
- 1:20:10a child could vanish and no one would
- 1:20:12file a single piece of paper.
- 1:20:15"No," Emily said. "Nobody would."
- 1:20:18"There's a man in the hallway," the
- 1:20:19detective said after a long pause.
- 1:20:22"Says he's not leaving until he sees
- 1:20:23you. Says his name's Cole Harrison. You
- 1:20:26know him." And Emily, who had answered
- 1:20:28every question that night in that flat
- 1:20:30quiet voice, felt her throat close.
- 1:20:32"Yeah," she said, "I know him. He's" she
- 1:20:35stopped. What was he?
- 1:20:37A man she'd met that afternoon, a
- 1:20:39stranger, an outlaw the whole world was
- 1:20:42afraid of.
- 1:20:43"He's my family," she said.
- 1:20:46The detective looked at her for a long
- 1:20:47moment, then he stood up and opened the
- 1:20:49door. Cole was on his feet before it was
- 1:20:51all the way
- 1:20:53open. And when he saw her small,
- 1:20:55exhausted, still blood-stained, but
- 1:20:57there, safe, whole, something in his
- 1:20:59chest that had been clenched tight for 6
- 1:21:01hours finally let go.
- 1:21:03"You stayed," Emily said. "I told you I
- 1:21:06would."
- 1:21:07"6 hours."
- 1:21:09"I'd have stayed 6 days." He crossed the
- 1:21:11hallway. "You okay? Did they treat you
- 1:21:14okay? Anybody give you a hard time? You
- 1:21:16tell me right now." "They were fine."
- 1:21:18Her eyes were wet. "Cole, they said
- 1:21:20because nobody ever reported me, because
- 1:21:23I've been on my own so long, they said
- 1:21:25it's complicated. There's no parent
- 1:21:27who's looking for me. There's no home to
- 1:21:29send me back to. They said I'll go to
- 1:21:32emergency placement, some group home,
- 1:21:34until they figure out for how long.
- 1:21:37They don't know. Weeks, maybe more."
- 1:21:39Cole was quiet for a second, and Emily
- 1:21:42braced the way she always braced for the
- 1:21:43part where the promise met reality, and
- 1:21:45reality won. "Okay," Cole said, "then
- 1:21:48here's what happens. You go where they
- 1:21:50say you have to go tonight, because we
- 1:21:52do this right and legal. Remember, we
- 1:21:54don't give anybody a reason to say we
- 1:21:56did it wrong. And starting tomorrow
- 1:21:58morning, I start doing everything a man
- 1:22:00can legally do to change your situation.
- 1:22:03Lawyers, home study, whatever a judge
- 1:22:05needs to see. I've already made some
- 1:22:08calls."
- 1:22:09He almost smiled. "Turns out saving 22
- 1:22:11people and stopping an attempted mass
- 1:22:13murder makes folks take your phone
- 1:22:15calls, even when you look like me. You
- 1:22:18can't just adopt a 17-year-old, Cole. It
- 1:22:20doesn't" "Foster first," Cole said,
- 1:22:22"then we see. There's a process. I've
- 1:22:25been on the phone with a lawyer for 2
- 1:22:26hours already while you were in there.
- 1:22:28It's not fast and it's not simple and
- 1:22:31there's a hundred ways the state could
- 1:22:32say no.
- 1:22:34He crouched down to her level the way he
- 1:22:36had in the parking lot. But Emily, I've
- 1:22:38got a clean record, a home, and an
- 1:22:40income, and about a thousand character
- 1:22:43witnesses in leather who'll swear to a
- 1:22:45judge you saved their lives. And I've
- 1:22:47got one more thing that matters more
- 1:22:49than all of it. What? I want to, he said
- 1:22:52simply. You've spent two years
- 1:22:54surrounded by people who could have
- 1:22:56helped and didn't want to. Well, here's
- 1:22:58a man who wants to and that turns out to
- 1:23:01count for a lot. The detective still
- 1:23:03standing in the doorway cleared his
- 1:23:04throat. For what it's worth, he said,
- 1:23:08I've been doing this 18 years. I've
- 1:23:10never seen a case file like tonight's
- 1:23:12and I've never seen a man wait six hours
- 1:23:15in a hallway for a kid who isn't his. He
- 1:23:18looked at Cole. You do it right. Every
- 1:23:20form, every home visit, no shortcuts.
- 1:23:23I'll write whatever the court needs from
- 1:23:24my end. That's not nothing. But you do
- 1:23:27it right. Every form, Cole said. No
- 1:23:30shortcuts. You have my word. It took
- 1:23:32four months. Four months of home visits
- 1:23:34and paperwork and a case worker who came
- 1:23:37to Cole's house unannounced twice and
- 1:23:39found it clean and warm and stocked with
- 1:23:41food in a bedroom that Cole had painted
- 1:23:43himself badly because he'd never painted
- 1:23:45a room in his life. But he wasn't going
- 1:23:47to let anyone else do it. Four months of
- 1:23:50a group home where Emily counted days
- 1:23:52and where Cole Cole visited every single
- 1:23:54visiting day without missing one and
- 1:23:56where the other kids stopped believing
- 1:23:58her when she said a Hells Angel was
- 1:24:00going to foster her until the day 22
- 1:24:02motorcycles pulled up out front and
- 1:24:04every kid in that home pressed their
- 1:24:05faces to the windows. Four months of a
- 1:24:08judge who was skeptical and had every
- 1:24:10right to be looking down from the bench
- 1:24:12at a 52-year-old outlaw biker asking to
- 1:24:15take in a 17-year-old girl and asking
- 1:24:17hard questions. The right questions, the
- 1:24:20questions a good judge should ask. And
- 1:24:22it was Emily who answered the one that
- 1:24:24mattered. The judge had asked Cole a
- 1:24:26dozen things, and Cole had answered them
- 1:24:28all steady and plain.
- 1:24:30And then the judge looked at Emily and
- 1:24:32said, "You've been through a great deal,
- 1:24:34young lady, and I have to be careful
- 1:24:36with you, even when especially when
- 1:24:38someone's offering you something that
- 1:24:39looks like a rescue. So, I'm going to
- 1:24:42ask you directly, and I want you to know
- 1:24:44you can say anything, and no one in this
- 1:24:46room can be angry with you for it.
- 1:24:48Do you want this? Do you want to live
- 1:24:50with this man?" And Emily
- 1:24:52[clears throat] stood up in the one nice
- 1:24:53outfit the group home had found for her,
- 1:24:55and she looked at Cole sitting there in
- 1:24:56a suit that fit him wrong because he'd
- 1:24:58bought it just for that day, and she
- 1:25:00looked back at the judge. "Can I tell
- 1:25:02you a story first?" she asked. The judge
- 1:25:05blinked. "Go ahead." "Four months ago I
- 1:25:08was standing on a highway watching 22
- 1:25:10motorcycles come at me at full speed,
- 1:25:13and I had a choice. I could hide and be
- 1:25:15safe and let those men ride into a trap
- 1:25:17and die.
- 1:25:19Or I could step out into the road in
- 1:25:20front of all of them and probably get
- 1:25:22killed doing it."
- 1:25:23She kept her eyes on the judge.
- 1:25:25"Everybody in my life up to that day had
- 1:25:27taught me the same lesson over and over,
- 1:25:30that you look out for yourself, that
- 1:25:32nobody's coming to help you, that when
- 1:25:34you're in trouble, people look away."
- 1:25:37Her voice was steady.
- 1:25:39"So, by everything I'd learned, I should
- 1:25:40have hidden, saved myself. That's what
- 1:25:43the world taught me to do. But you
- 1:25:45didn't," the judge said quietly. "No, I
- 1:25:47stepped into the road.
- 1:25:49Emily's chin lifted. "And that man," she
- 1:25:52pointed at Cole, "stopped 22 motorcycles
- 1:25:55for a girl he'd never met. And then he
- 1:25:57found out I was hungry and he fed me.
- 1:25:59And he found out I was scared and he
- 1:26:01protected me. And he found out I had
- 1:26:04nowhere to go, and instead of doing what
- 1:26:06everyone else in my life did, instead of
- 1:26:08looking away,
- 1:26:09he sat in a hallway for 6 hours. And
- 1:26:12then he painted a bedroom he'd never
- 1:26:14painted. And then he put on a suit that
- 1:26:16doesn't fit and came here to ask you to
- 1:26:19let him keep looking after me.
- 1:26:21She was crying now, but her voice didn't
- 1:26:23shake.
- 1:26:24So, you asked if I want this, Your
- 1:26:26Honor.
- 1:26:27I stepped in front of 22 motorcycles for
- 1:26:29these people when I had every reason in
- 1:26:31the world to run.
- 1:26:33That's how much I trust them.
- 1:26:35I bet my life on them before I even knew
- 1:26:37their names. I'm not scared to bet the
- 1:26:39rest of it on them now. The courtroom
- 1:26:41was silent. The judge took off her
- 1:26:43glasses and set them down and was quiet
- 1:26:46for a moment. And when she spoke, her
- 1:26:47voice was not quite as steady as a
- 1:26:49judge's voice is supposed to be.
- 1:26:52"In 22 years on the bench," she said,
- 1:26:55"I have rarely been as sure of a
- 1:26:56decision as I am right now." And she
- 1:26:58granted it. Emily didn't remember much
- 1:27:00of the next few minutes.
- 1:27:02She remembered Cole standing up so fast
- 1:27:04his chair scraped the floor.
- 1:27:06She remembered him crossing the room and
- 1:27:08and lifting her clean off her feet in a
- 1:27:10hug that squeezed the breath out of her.
- 1:27:13She remembered outside the courthouse
- 1:27:15that the sound started low and then
- 1:27:17filled the whole street, 21 motorcycles
- 1:27:20roaring all at once, because Diesel had
- 1:27:22parked the entire club outside the
- 1:27:24courthouse and told them to lay on the
- 1:27:26engines the second they saw Bear come
- 1:27:28through those doors with the girl. She
- 1:27:29remembered Diesel, huge and gruff,
- 1:27:31coming up and standing in front of her,
- 1:27:33working his jaw like he had something to
- 1:27:35say and couldn't find it.
- 1:27:37"I called you bait," he finally said.
- 1:27:40"First day on the road."
- 1:27:42"I remember," Emily said, "I want you to
- 1:27:44remember something else instead."
- 1:27:47He pulled something out of his vest, a
- 1:27:49small leather patch, hand-stitched, worn
- 1:27:51soft. He pressed it into her hands.
- 1:27:54"That was my daughter's. I lost her a
- 1:27:56long time ago to something that wasn't
- 1:27:58anybody's fault, just the way things go
- 1:28:00sometimes.
- 1:28:02I never thought I'd have anyone to give
- 1:28:03it to."
- 1:28:04His voice was rough as gravel. "You're
- 1:28:06not bait, kid, you're family. You're my
- 1:28:09family. And this club has been missing
- 1:28:11something for a long time, and it turns
- 1:28:13out it was you. We just didn't know it
- 1:28:15till you stepped in front of us. Emily
- 1:28:18held a little patch in both hands and
- 1:28:19couldn't speak. Reggie was there, too,
- 1:28:22arm still in a sling 4 months later.
- 1:28:24Walking slow, but walking. He [snorts]
- 1:28:26told the police everything he knew about
- 1:28:28Merrick, and it had turned an attempted
- 1:28:31murder case into something much bigger.
- 1:28:33And it had also, the prosecutor said,
- 1:28:35earned Reggie enough goodwill to keep
- 1:28:37him out of a cell. He'd started fixing
- 1:28:39bikes for the club, quiet and useful, a
- 1:28:41man rebuilding himself one honest day at
- 1:28:44a time. "You know," he said to Emily,
- 1:28:46"you told me that night that someday I'd
- 1:28:48tell somebody about the night I stopped
- 1:28:50being a coward."
- 1:28:51I remember.
- 1:28:53I've told it about 40 times now.
- 1:28:55He almost smiled. "Nobody believes the
- 1:28:58part where a 17-year-old girl was the
- 1:29:00bravest one there. But that's the part
- 1:29:03that's true." And Merrick, Danny
- 1:29:05Merrick, went back to prison, and this
- 1:29:07time it wasn't for 11 years. The
- 1:29:09attempted murder of 22 people, the hired
- 1:29:12shooters, the ambush on the road, then
- 1:29:14all of it laid out clean and legal,
- 1:29:16exactly the way Cole had insisted from
- 1:29:18the very first minute on that highway.
- 1:29:20He would not be getting out to hunt
- 1:29:22anyone ever again. The trap he'd built
- 1:29:25over 11 years had caught only one person
- 1:29:28in the end, and that person was himself.
- 1:29:30That night, the night the judge signed
- 1:29:32the papers, Emily went home. Not
- 1:29:34[clears throat] to a bridge, not to a
- 1:29:36shelter, not to a group home where she
- 1:29:38counted days. Home. Cole's house had a
- 1:29:40real bedroom with a door that locked
- 1:29:42from the inside because the case worker
- 1:29:44had suggested it, and Cole had
- 1:29:46understood immediately why a girl who'd
- 1:29:48slept under a bridge for 2 years might
- 1:29:50need to be the one who decided when her
- 1:29:52door was open. It had a bed with actual
- 1:29:55sheets. It had a window that looked out
- 1:29:57over a yard. And taped to the mirror
- 1:29:59where she'd see it every morning, Cole
- 1:30:02had put a photograph, 22 motorcycles on
- 1:30:04a desert highway, and one skinny girl
- 1:30:06standing in front of them taken by
- 1:30:08Reggie that first day before any of them
- 1:30:10knew how the story would go. Under it
- 1:30:12Cole had written four words in his rough
- 1:30:14handwriting. The day everything changed.
- 1:30:16Emily stood in the doorway of that room
- 1:30:18for a long time.
- 1:30:19And then she did something she hadn't
- 1:30:21done in two years. She set her backpack
- 1:30:23down, the old backpack empty that had
- 1:30:25been the only thing she owned, and she
- 1:30:27didn't keep it close, didn't keep it
- 1:30:29ready by the door
- 1:30:30for the moment she'd have to run again
- 1:30:32because there wasn't going to be a
- 1:30:34moment she'd have to run again. She sat
- 1:30:36on the edge of the bed and she cried one
- 1:30:38more time, but they weren't the old
- 1:30:40tears.
- 1:30:41The old tears had been about surviving.
- 1:30:44These were about something she'd stopped
- 1:30:46believing existed.
- 1:30:48Cole knocked softly on the open door.
- 1:30:51You okay?
- 1:30:52Yeah. She wiped her face.
- 1:30:55I keep thinking about that afternoon
- 1:30:57on the highway. How close I came to
- 1:31:00hiding.
- 1:31:01Cole came and sat down beside her, the
- 1:31:03bed creaking under him. "You want to
- 1:31:05know what I keep thinking about?" he
- 1:31:06said. "I keep thinking about all the
- 1:31:08people who drove past you those two
- 1:31:10years.
- 1:31:11All the ones who saw a homeless kid and
- 1:31:13looked away.
- 1:31:15And how not one of them knew, not one,
- 1:31:17that the girl they were ignoring was
- 1:31:19going to turn out to be the bravest
- 1:31:20person any of us ever met."
- 1:31:22He shook his head slowly. "The whole
- 1:31:24world looked right at you and saw
- 1:31:26nothing, Emily, and they were wrong.
- 1:31:28Every single one of them was wrong." "I
- 1:31:30used to think they were right," she
- 1:31:32admitted quietly. "I used to think if
- 1:31:34that many people look at you and decide
- 1:31:36you don't matter, then maybe you don't."
- 1:31:38"And now, oh." Emily was quiet for a
- 1:31:41moment. She looked at the photograph on
- 1:31:42the mirror, at the little leather patch
- 1:31:45Diesel had given her sitting on the
- 1:31:46nightstand, at the locked door that she
- 1:31:48got to decide about, at the enormous
- 1:31:50gruff gentle man sitting beside her who
- 1:31:52had chosen her when no one else on Earth
- 1:31:54had. "Now I know they were just looking
- 1:31:57away," she said. "That's all it ever
- 1:31:59was. It was never about whether I
- 1:32:01mattered. It was about whether they'd
- 1:32:03bother to see. And some people do.
- 1:32:06She looked at him at him. Some people
- 1:32:08stopped 22 motorcycles.
- 1:32:10Cole put his arm around her shoulders
- 1:32:12and she leaned into it and for a while
- 1:32:14neither of them said anything at all.
- 1:32:16Years later and there were years, good
- 1:32:18ones, full ones.
- 1:32:20Emily would tell this story herself.
- 1:32:22She'd tell it to a college classroom
- 1:32:23because she went to college, the first
- 1:32:25person in her family ever to do it on a
- 1:32:27scholarship and a recommendation letter
- 1:32:29signed by a judge. She'd tell it in a
- 1:32:31social work office because that's what
- 1:32:33she became, the person who goes toward
- 1:32:35the kid everyone else drives past.
- 1:32:38She'd tell it at a wedding, her own,
- 1:32:40with 21 aging bikers in the pews and
- 1:32:42Cole Harrison walking her down the
- 1:32:44aisle, gray beard gone white, now crying
- 1:32:47so hard he could barely see. And every
- 1:32:50single time she told it, people would
- 1:32:52ask her the same question the judge had
- 1:32:54asked, the same question she'd ask Cole
- 1:32:55a hundred times that first night.
- 1:32:58Why? Why did you step into the road?
- 1:33:01Why did you risk everything for
- 1:33:02strangers? And every single time Emily
- 1:33:05Carter gave the same answer. Because
- 1:33:07somebody has to be the one who doesn't
- 1:33:09look away, she'd say.
- 1:33:11The whole world had looked away from me
- 1:33:13for two years.
- 1:33:14I knew exactly what it felt like to be
- 1:33:16the person on the ground that nobody
- 1:33:17helps. And when I saw 22 people about to
- 1:33:20ride into something terrible, I had a
- 1:33:22choice. I could be one more person who
- 1:33:24looked away or I could be the one who
- 1:33:26didn't. She'd smile then the sauce that
- 1:33:28took her years to learn.
- 1:33:30I chose to be the one who didn't and it
- 1:33:33saved 22 lives.
- 1:33:34And then those 22 people turned around
- 1:33:37and saved mine. That's the whole thing.
- 1:33:40That's everything I know about how the
- 1:33:42world works. When you refuse to look
- 1:33:44away from someone in trouble, you don't
- 1:33:46just save them.
- 1:33:47You start something and it comes back
- 1:33:50around. It always comes back around. She
- 1:33:52was right. A homeless girl with nothing
- 1:33:54but courage stepped into the path of 22
- 1:33:57men the world was afraid of and refused
- 1:33:59to look away and in doing so she didn't
- 1:34:01just stop a trap and save their lives.
- 1:34:04She proved something that every
- 1:34:06forgotten person on every cold street
- 1:34:08needs to know is true.
- 1:34:10That the ones nobody sees can be the
- 1:34:12strongest of all.
- 1:34:13That the people everyone fears can be
- 1:34:16the ones who protect the forgotten.
- 1:34:18And that no one no one is ever truly
- 1:34:20beyond saving as long as somebody
- 1:34:23somewhere refuses to walk away. Emily
- 1:34:25Carter was never invisible. The world
- 1:34:28just hadn't been looking.
- 1:34:29But 22 people looked and that made all
- 1:34:32the difference and it always always
- 1:34:34will.
