Stop Buying More Clothes. Do This Instead — Transcript

- 0:00Most people think they need better
- 0:01clothes to improve their style, but I
- 0:04actually think it comes down to a few
- 0:07small habits. And these are the ones
- 0:09that have changed everything for me.
- 0:10Repeat and refine outfits until they
- 0:13feel just right. Repeating outfits is
- 0:16something that I used to avoid
- 0:18completely. If I wore something that
- 0:19didn't feel right, I would just assume
- 0:22that it was the item that was the
- 0:24problem, and I would just not wear it
- 0:26again and completely move on. I think
- 0:28this is where most people stop. They
- 0:31think, "No, this doesn't work." They
- 0:33toss it to the side, and they start
- 0:36completely fresh with a brand new
- 0:38outfit. But that's actually where the
- 0:40interesting part starts. Because most of
- 0:43the time, it might not be the item
- 0:45that's the problem. It's just that you
- 0:48weren't finished tinkering with the
- 0:50outfit yet. If something in my outfit
- 0:52feels off, and I can't quite pinpoint
- 0:55why, I will actually try and sit with it
- 0:59and try and analyze and understand
- 1:02exactly what it is. Is it the
- 1:04proportion? Is it the shape of the shoe?
- 1:07Is it the color? For example, pairing
- 1:11jeans and the right shoe together is
- 1:14actually a lot trickier than it seems,
- 1:16and I could probably do a whole video
- 1:17about this. I would wear a pair of jeans
- 1:20with a certain shoe, and for some
- 1:22reason, they're not working. But I
- 1:24wouldn't ever bother to figure out why.
- 1:27But now I'll adjust. Is it the shape of
- 1:29the shoe? Is it that not enough of my
- 1:32foot is showing? Is it the length of the
- 1:35jean? There are so many little tweaks
- 1:37and details with our clothes that make
- 1:40such a big difference. So instead of
- 1:43writing things off straight away,
- 1:46I'll now try and tinker with it. I'll
- 1:48reiterate. I'll wear things again. I'll
- 1:51pair it with different things, and I'll
- 1:53just try and get to the bottom of it. Of
- 1:56course, some things just were bad
- 1:58purchases and you do end up decluttering
- 2:00them, but at least you're trying to
- 2:03figure out and learn why and that way
- 2:06you won't make the same mistake again.
- 2:07And I think the outfits I wear the most
- 2:10are the ones where I've put in the most
- 2:13work to get right. Repeating outfits is
- 2:16such a powerful tool because it helps me
- 2:19realize something about my style quite
- 2:21quickly. It showed me the types of
- 2:24pieces or the types of shapes or the
- 2:26colors that I just naturally gravitate
- 2:28towards more and over time some of those
- 2:31things have become what I think are my
- 2:34signature pieces. In the past, I always
- 2:37thought that style came from variety and
- 2:42being able to wear something brand new
- 2:44every single day. And that is what led
- 2:47me to have a new ASOS order turn up at
- 2:51my door every week. This was in my early
- 2:54twenties, by the way. But what I know
- 2:55now is that a big part of personal style
- 3:00is having signature pieces that you wear
- 3:06again and again. It's when a friend can
- 3:08point out a color or a silhouette or
- 3:11maybe a specific item and say, "That is
- 3:14so you." I think that is the ultimate
- 3:18style compliment because
- 3:20they have picked up on something that
- 3:23you love wearing and now they associate
- 3:27that with you and that is personal
- 3:30style. It can be something, you know,
- 3:32really obvious like Steve Jobs and his
- 3:35black turtleneck, jeans and New Balance
- 3:38sneakers or Jane Birkin and her basket
- 3:41bag. Or it doesn't have to be a specific
- 3:44item. It can be a lot more subtle such
- 3:47as Sarah Linh Tran's style where she
- 3:51wears a lot of fluid shapes and
- 3:53oversized silhouettes in sort of muted
- 3:56monochromatic palette. And those same
- 3:58things are repeated over and over again.
- 4:01When I look at my own style and I think
- 4:04about the outfits that I come back to
- 4:07you again and again, they're always the
- 4:08same versions, like sort of the same
- 4:11outfit. I like quite a clean silhouette.
- 4:15I don't like anything too slouchy. I
- 4:17like a bit of structure. And I always
- 4:20like my tops to be quite simple.
- 4:22Although I am wearing this new striped
- 4:25shirt that has a little bit of a frilly
- 4:26collar, but this is probably about as
- 4:29crazy as it gets for me.
- 4:31If I'm not wearing this, I'm mostly in a
- 4:33button-down or a t-shirt or a tank top.
- 4:36And then I like to bring in a bit more
- 4:38of a masculine element, like a loafer or
- 4:41a belt or a leather jacket. I've been
- 4:44tinkering with my style words lately, my
- 4:47three style words, but I think I've
- 4:50settled on structured, minimal, and
- 4:54relaxed. Right now that feels right. And
- 4:57I think everything I wear tends to sit
- 5:00somewhere within those words. And that
- 5:02even extends to my jewelry. I've always
- 5:05been drawn to pieces that feel
- 5:07understated but still a little bit
- 5:09special. Pieces that sit quietly within
- 5:12an outfit without standing out too much.
- 5:16For me, those are my diamond pieces from
- 5:18Ideal. I definitely consider them as
- 5:21part of my signature. I've hardly taken
- 5:24them off in the five years that I've
- 5:26been wearing them. And that's why I'm
- 5:27really excited about this because Ideal
- 5:30are launching a brand new 10-piece
- 5:32collection today and I get to be one of
- 5:35the first people to show you some of the
- 5:38pieces. The collection is called Marée,
- 5:40which is French for tide, and that was
- 5:43my best French accent. Thank you. And
- 5:47it's inspired by the ebb and flow of
- 5:50water and the rhythm of the sea. I have
- 5:53to start by showing you my favorite
- 5:55piece that I am wearing right now. This
- 5:58is Noir and then we have the matching
- 6:01necklace Cell. And you can really see
- 6:04the inspiration in the shape of the
- 6:06pieces. They're not perfectly
- 6:08symmetrical or rigid. Each piece is much
- 6:12more organic, almost like waves or
- 6:14spirals. And there's a softness to them
- 6:17that feels very fluid and natural.
- 6:20They're designed to be layered and
- 6:21combined easily and so I have styled the
- 6:24Noir with some of my trusted favorites.
- 6:28I paired it with the Ray, which is a
- 6:30mini stacker. And if I want to add
- 6:33something a little bit more, then I also
- 6:36love it with the Solar cuff. Even the
- 6:39way the diamonds are set reflects this
- 6:41organic feel. The stones vary slightly
- 6:45in size and placement, so the surface
- 6:47doesn't feel flat or repetitive. It
- 6:50catches the light in a much more subtle
- 6:52and slightly irregular way, almost like
- 6:55light moving across water. And then we
- 6:58have some of the more statement pieces.
- 7:00The Nuit, which is an add-on that sits
- 7:03comfortably behind a stud, and the
- 7:06matching Jour necklace. To me, the Nuit
- 7:09feels quite bold and so you can wear it
- 7:11on its own and let it stand out. But I
- 7:15also like pairing it with more minimal
- 7:16pieces and so I've worn it with the
- 7:19Apollo chain, which has two diamonds on
- 7:22it, and I love the contrast between
- 7:25these two pieces. I think this might be
- 7:27one of my favorite pairings, but I also
- 7:30think it looks really beautiful with the
- 7:33Live ear climber. And this was one of my
- 7:35first pieces from Ideal that I ever got
- 7:385 years ago and still one of my
- 7:41favorites. With the Jour necklace,
- 7:43again, it looks absolutely stunning on
- 7:46its own, but I think it also layers
- 7:49really well with the Charlie choker,
- 7:51which is a necklace that you see me wear
- 7:54all the time. This collection is so
- 7:56different to anything that I have seen
- 7:59from Ideal before, but it still feels
- 8:02very Ideal. It's considered, it's
- 8:05understated. Each piece is made from
- 8:0814-karat solid gold and beautifully cut
- 8:12lab-grown diamonds. But what I like is
- 8:14that they still feel like everyday
- 8:16pieces, not something that you have to
- 8:18save for a specific occasion. As always
- 8:21with Ideal, their new launches sell out
- 8:24very, very quickly, and so if anything
- 8:27caught your eye, I have linked
- 8:29everything in the description box, and
- 8:31of course, you are welcome to use my
- 8:33code Adeline10 for 10% off. Thank you so
- 8:36much to Ideal for sponsoring this part
- 8:38of the video. Speaking of a signature
- 8:41style, I have been doing something a
- 8:44little bit different in how I style
- 8:47myself lately. It's a small change, but
- 8:50it's made such a big impact on my
- 8:52outfits. Some of you have already
- 8:54noticed and commented on it and sent me
- 8:57DMs about it, and it's how I style my
- 9:00hair. You've all seen me on YouTube for
- 9:03the past 5 years. I can't believe I've
- 9:04been on YouTube for 5 years, and you've
- 9:07seen the way I normally do my hair. It's
- 9:09just like a normal curl or like a
- 9:12blowout, and recently I've been doing my
- 9:15hair in this sort of like looser, beachy
- 9:19wave. I don't even know what what I
- 9:20would call this, but it's just like a
- 9:22much It feels a lot more natural
- 9:26and relaxed wave. And I didn't expect
- 9:30this hair change to make such a
- 9:32difference, but it really has. There
- 9:35There times when I would get dressed and
- 9:38certain outfits would just feel off and
- 9:42I really couldn't pinpoint why because I
- 9:45technically really liked what I was
- 9:47wearing but I would feel too done and
- 9:51too polished and I just didn't like that
- 9:54but I couldn't figure out why. At the
- 9:55start of this year when I was just
- 9:58reorganizing some stuff at home I came
- 10:00across my old mermaid hair tong waver
- 10:05thing. It's the one that has like three
- 10:07barrels and you clamp your hair in and I
- 10:10randomly decided to use it and that's
- 10:13when it all kind of clicked. It wasn't
- 10:15my clothes that were making me feel too
- 10:18polished, it was actually my hair. And
- 10:21so now I really do try and think about
- 10:23my hair as part of the outfit, not just
- 10:26some sort of afterthought. If I'm
- 10:28wearing something a little bit more
- 10:30structured or tailored which I often do
- 10:33because I enjoy wearing those things and
- 10:36I don't want to not wear those things
- 10:38but I also want to feel not so dressed
- 10:41up then I'll go for this more like
- 10:44looser beachy undone hair just to
- 10:48balance out the whole outfit. So
- 10:50sometimes it's not your clothes,
- 10:52it's your hair. Since I started doing
- 10:54this next one last year it has
- 10:57completely transformed the way I get
- 10:59dressed and taken all the stress out of
- 11:02it and has just made my wardrobe so much
- 11:06more fun and that is doing a seasonal
- 11:08switchover and mini declutter. I used to
- 11:12treat my wardrobe as just this one big
- 11:14static thing. Everything was in there
- 11:18all year round. I had denim shorts next
- 11:22to wool trousers. I had summer dresses
- 11:26next to big knit cardigans and it just
- 11:30didn't make sense. I would just be
- 11:32digging and rummaging through everything
- 11:34just to put one like normal outfit
- 11:37together. When it comes to your
- 11:39wardrobe, you don't want to see things
- 11:41that you don't need to wear that season.
- 11:43During the winter, I don't need to see
- 11:46my linen trousers. When everything is in
- 11:48your wardrobe all the time, you cannot
- 11:51see things properly. Everything just
- 11:53blends together. It's just too difficult
- 11:56to keep sifting through everything, and
- 11:59I ended up just wearing the same few
- 12:01things over and over again because they
- 12:03were just the easiest things to grab.
- 12:04And I think even just the process of
- 12:07sifting through things and looking at
- 12:09things that you just don't need is bad
- 12:12for your brain. You're giving your brain
- 12:13too many decisions to make, and then so
- 12:17you're tiring out the brain. I recently
- 12:19did a winter to early spring switchover,
- 12:23and it's just like a little reset. I
- 12:25didn't change too much around, but I got
- 12:29rid of my thicker wool jackets. I took
- 12:32out all my Heattech, and I added in a
- 12:35few lighter cotton trousers, a few pairs
- 12:38of shorts, but realistically I'm not
- 12:40going to be wearing them for a while,
- 12:41but I thought, you know, just in case we
- 12:43have a random April heatwave. And
- 12:45honestly, just seeing those pieces again
- 12:47has made me really excited about my
- 12:49wardrobe. It just forces you to
- 12:51re-engage with your clothes a little bit
- 12:53more. And instead of just getting
- 12:55dressed on autopilot, you know, you're
- 12:57kind of seeing new things next to things
- 13:00that you've been looking at all winter
- 13:02long, and you can start seeing, you
- 13:05know, different combinations of things
- 13:08to put together. So, at the same time,
- 13:10I'll also pull out a few autumn-winter
- 13:12things that maybe I didn't wear at all,
- 13:16or I just didn't enjoy wearing, and I'll
- 13:19set them aside for a little bit. Not to
- 13:22make a decision on what to do with them
- 13:23straight away, but it just gives me a
- 13:26bit of distance from those items. I
- 13:28found that when something is constantly
- 13:31in front of you, it's really hard to
- 13:34judge that item properly. And sometimes
- 13:36we just need a little bit of space from
- 13:38it. And this has made keeping on top of
- 13:42my decluttering and keeping on top of my
- 13:44wardrobe just so much easier because I'm
- 13:47not doing like one overhaul decluttering
- 13:50sweep. That to me feels too overwhelming
- 13:54and I just don't want to do that. But,
- 13:56these mini declutters just feel a lot
- 13:59easier to me. I truly think if there's
- 14:02one thing you take away from this video,
- 14:04it's this point. Because over time your
- 14:08wardrobe will feel so much more
- 14:10considered and so much easier to use.
- 14:13This next habit has made a really big
- 14:17impact on how I see a lot of my old
- 14:19items and also how I shop for new items.
- 14:23And that is to pay attention to how
- 14:25things feel, not just look. I used to
- 14:29spend most of my focus just paying
- 14:33attention to how something looks on me.
- 14:36If something looked good in the mirror
- 14:38or maybe I saw it styled really well on
- 14:40someone else, then I would just assume
- 14:44that it's a good item. Especially now
- 14:46with social media, you can so easily see
- 14:50something that looks amazing on someone
- 14:52else. It's styled to perfection, the
- 14:54lighting is great, her body looks great.
- 14:57But, when you actually click into it and
- 15:00you look at the item, maybe it's made of
- 15:03something that is synthetic. Maybe when
- 15:06you actually go and see it in the shop,
- 15:08it's not made very well. And it might
- 15:10look great in the picture or the video,
- 15:12but long-term this is not something that
- 15:16you're going to keep. An example for me
- 15:18would be high-waisted
- 15:20type jeans. If you watch my last video,
- 15:22you'll know that I did a denim
- 15:24declutter, and so this is like front of
- 15:26mind for me. I recently decluttered one
- 15:29of my favorite pairs of jeans, which are
- 15:31the cause arch jeans. You can still get
- 15:34these, and you would have seen me wear
- 15:36these loads on my YouTube channel
- 15:38because I do genuinely love them. But
- 15:40recently, when I put them on, I'm just
- 15:43feeling like they are too tight. They're
- 15:46too restrictive. I'm not comfortable
- 15:49when I wear them. Why would I wear this
- 15:51pair when I can wear another pair that
- 15:54is more comfortable, basically. And I
- 15:56think when I first got these jeans a
- 15:58couple years ago, I was happy to be
- 16:00uncomfortable if it looked good. But
- 16:02now, you know, I'm turning 34 this year,
- 16:04and I just don't have time to go about
- 16:07my life being uncomfortable. And when
- 16:10you're uncomfortable, it just shows when
- 16:12you're wearing it. Maybe you're
- 16:13fidgeting, or you're always adjusting
- 16:16something, or
- 16:17you're just thinking, I can't wait to
- 16:19get home so I can take these off. And so
- 16:21now that is part of a filter for me. If
- 16:23something isn't comfortable, or it
- 16:25doesn't feel right, then
- 16:27I'm probably not going to wear it, and
- 16:29so it probably needs to get out of my
- 16:32wardrobe. And naturally, that's the same
- 16:34for new pieces that I want to bring into
- 16:36my wardrobe. So when you are considering
- 16:39an item in your wardrobe, or if you're
- 16:41buying something new, I would run
- 16:44through these questions. Does the fabric
- 16:46feel good on my skin? Does it drape
- 16:48well, or does it feel stiff or rigid?
- 16:51Can I sit down in it? Does it hold its
- 16:53shape, or does it look like it's going
- 16:56to look sloppy after a few wears? Are
- 16:58the seams, hems, and finishes clean? And
- 17:01if I do decide that I no longer want to
- 17:04wear this, will it still be in good
- 17:06enough condition to donate or resell?
- 17:10And most of the time, those questions
- 17:11are enough for me to decide if something
- 17:13is worth it or not. And speaking of
- 17:15resale, another habit I have gotten into
- 17:18recently is whenever I want to buy
- 17:22something new, I will check all the
- 17:24resale websites to see if someone is
- 17:27selling it pre-loved first. And
- 17:29honestly, most of the time, someone is.
- 17:31To be honest, there are a couple brands
- 17:34where I really don't want to pay full
- 17:37price for. One of them is Massimo Dutti.
- 17:40I really love their designs, but I just
- 17:43don't think they're worth it
- 17:45full retail price. I don't think the
- 17:47price reflects the quality. And I've
- 17:50managed to get a couple of Massimo Dutti
- 17:52jackets pre-loved for a fraction of the
- 17:56cost, and I wear them all the time, and
- 17:59I absolutely love them. And for the
- 18:00price I paid for them, I'm so happy. And
- 18:02I'd much rather buy it this way, because
- 18:04then I feel like I'm getting an item
- 18:06that I genuinely like, and I'm getting
- 18:09it at a price I think the item deserves.
- 18:13And the same goes with denim. Go into
- 18:16your department stores and try on all
- 18:20the expensive jeans to figure out your
- 18:23size, figure out which washes you like,
- 18:26etc., etc., and just search for them
- 18:28online, and you will find those jeans at
- 18:31a fraction of the cost. I recently was
- 18:33in Reformation, and I tried on their Val
- 18:36jeans, but they are like nearly 200
- 18:38pounds, and I just didn't want to pay
- 18:41that much for jeans, and I came across
- 18:44them on Vinted for a fraction of the
- 18:47cost, brand new with tags, and I knew my
- 18:50size cuz I had tried them on, and I was
- 18:53I was so happy. Shopping this way has
- 18:55also just made me realize how much there
- 18:58is on resale sites, and it's kind of the
- 19:02way I like to shop now. So, this is
- 19:04something I realized I needed to start
- 19:07doing, and that is to dress for
- 19:10yourself, and not the situation or the
- 19:15people. And what I mean by that is I
- 19:18used to get dressed based on what I was
- 19:21doing and who was going and what other
- 19:24people were wearing. I'd ask my friends
- 19:26what they were wearing and try and match
- 19:29the tone or the vibe of the situation.
- 19:32And sure, I'd end up in outfits that
- 19:34made sense for that setting, but maybe
- 19:37they weren't necessarily outfits that
- 19:40felt true to me. For example, if I knew
- 19:43that everyone was going to be quite
- 19:45casual, then I would also dress really
- 19:48casually even if it just didn't really
- 19:51feel right. And I think that's why I
- 19:53sometimes felt a bit uncomfortable
- 19:57even if technically the outfit was fine.
- 20:00So now I approach things a little bit
- 20:02differently and I think about how I want
- 20:05to feel first. Do I want to feel put
- 20:07together? Do I want to be a little bit
- 20:09more dressed up? And I'll completely
- 20:11disregard what other people are wearing.
- 20:14I mean, obviously I'm not going to turn
- 20:16up to a casual dinner in something I
- 20:19would wear to a wedding, you know, but
- 20:21you get what I mean. Even if I'm going
- 20:22out for something, you know, a little
- 20:24bit more casual, I might still wear a
- 20:26blazer or a loafer because that is
- 20:29something that feels right to me and
- 20:32that's what I feel good in even if other
- 20:34people might be a little bit more
- 20:36casual. Or if I'm going somewhere a
- 20:39little bit nicer and I know everyone is
- 20:42dressing up, but maybe that's just not
- 20:44how I want to feel that night, I'll
- 20:47still make an effort to, you know, look
- 20:49polished and look put together, but I'll
- 20:52dress up in a way that feels right to
- 20:55me. And because of that, I've also
- 20:58really, really tried to make it a habit
- 21:01to stop asking what everyone else is
- 21:04wearing. Not because it matters in a
- 21:06negative way, but because I realized I
- 21:09was using that question to second-guess
- 21:12my own choices. And I was adjusting my
- 21:15outfit or my vibe to match everyone
- 21:17else, even if it's not really something
- 21:20I wanted to do. I do like to have one
- 21:22cheesy point in my videos, and this is
- 21:26it. This habit is just to remember to
- 21:29have fun and play. Recently, I came
- 21:32across this creator on TikTok. I'll put
- 21:35her videos on screen as well as her
- 21:36TikTok name. And the video The first
- 21:40video I saw of her was her just having
- 21:42fun in her clothes and playing dress-up
- 21:45in her wardrobe. And there was something
- 21:47about her aura and her video that just
- 21:51made me remember that I'm supposed to
- 21:53have fun. Fashion is supposed to be fun.
- 21:57Because I think it's very easy to
- 22:00overthink it. I know that I definitely
- 22:03do. I am an overthinker. I'm an
- 22:05overanalyzer. To the point where I could
- 22:08fixate on the smallest details that
- 22:11don't even matter. And then somewhere
- 22:12along the way, it just stops being fun.
- 22:16But coming across her video just made me
- 22:17remember that fashion is meant to be
- 22:20enjoyed, and it's meant to be enjoyable.
- 22:22So now I'm trying to be a bit more
- 22:24intentional about that because my
- 22:27natural like default demeanor is to take
- 22:30everything very seriously.
- 22:32When I do I don't really want to be like
- 22:35that, but I just I just am. But just
- 22:37setting some time aside to play around
- 22:41in my wardrobe, play around with my
- 22:42clothes, especially now that I've done
- 22:44this sort of mini winter to early spring
- 22:47switchover. Now is a really good time to
- 22:50just have a play, put things together,
- 22:53even if they look bad. This is where we
- 22:56learn about our outfits and about
- 22:58ourselves the most. There are no
- 23:00judgments here when we do this, and it's
- 23:03just a bit of fun. And I think that the
- 23:05more you have fun and you enjoy it, then
- 23:09the more naturally your style will come
- 23:11together. If this video resonated with
- 23:13you and you've realized that you don't
- 23:15necessarily need more clothes, you just
- 23:18need to tweak the way that you interact
- 23:21with them, then this next video that I'm
- 23:23going to put on screen might be worth
- 23:25your time. It's about what to stop
- 23:28buying this year and why your wardrobe
- 23:32might feel a little off. Remember to
- 23:34check out Ideal's brand new collection
- 23:36and as always, thank you so much for
- 23:39watching and I will see you in the next
- 23:40video. Bye.
