- 0:00I think we need to wrap this up but one
- 0:02theme that we want to ask everybody here
- 0:05and one speaker at Great length is
- 0:08privacy uhuh there seems to be this
- 0:11sorry Mark sorry I don't know if Mark's
- 0:13here but um hey Mark so um there there
- 0:19seems to be to have been a Spate of
- 0:24mistakes or you know false starts or
- 0:27things that have to do with privacy
- 0:29where companies have had to Retreat
- 0:30whether it's things with Facebook things
- 0:32with Google Buzz uh uh there were there
- 0:35or Google's uh Wi-Fi collection recently
- 0:38yeah that Wi-Fi collection that
- 0:40inadvertent yeah
- 0:44um talk to me about that how how
- 0:48how is privacy looked at differently in
- 0:51the in Silicon Valley than in the rest
- 0:53of America no Silicon Valley is not
- 0:55monolithic uh we've always had a very
- 0:58different view of privacy than some some
- 1:00of our colleagues in the valley we take
- 1:02privacy extremely seriously as an
- 1:06example we worry a lot about location in
- 1:11phones and we worry that some you know
- 1:1514-year-old is going to get stalked and
- 1:17something terrible is going to happen
- 1:19because of our
- 1:20phone and so as an example before any
- 1:24app can get location data we don't make
- 1:28it a rule that they have to put up a
- 1:30panel and ask because they might not
- 1:33follow that rule they call our location
- 1:35services and we put up the panel saying
- 1:38this app wants to use your location data
- 1:40is that okay with you every time they
- 1:44want to use
- 1:45it
- 1:47and we do a lot of things like that to
- 1:52to to ensure that people understand what
- 1:56these apps are doing that's one of the
- 1:58reasons we have the curated app store we
- 2:01have rejected a lot of apps that want to
- 2:04take a lot of your personal data and
- 2:06suck it up into the
- 2:08cloud a lot
- 2:13so we're really old a lot of people in
- 2:16the valley think we're really
- 2:17old-fashioned about this uh and maybe we
- 2:20are but we worry about stuff like this
- 2:23but aren't you also going to be moving
- 2:25more into cloud-based things are we
- 2:28going to be moving more into cloud-based
- 2:30sure but but and doesn't that
- 2:33inevitably privacy means people know
- 2:38what they're signing up for in plain
- 2:41English and
- 2:43repeatedly that's what it means I I have
- 2:45I'm an optimist I believe people are
- 2:47smart and some people want to share more
- 2:50data than other people do ask them ask
- 2:53them every time make them tell you to
- 2:56stop asking them if they get tired of
- 2:58you're asking them let them know
- 3:01precisely what you're going to do with
- 3:03their
- 3:04data okay that's that's what we think
- 3:08thank you okay why don't we open up the
- 3:10um we we have a little we're running a
- 3:13little late but we certainly have time
- 3:14for some questions uh I think actually
- 3:16you got there first if I'm so
