- 0:00they were failed by the police
- 0:03families who lost sons and brothers
- 0:05today the inquests into their deaths
- 0:08said mistakes missed opportunities and
- 0:10basic errors by detectives let a serial
- 0:13killer get away with murder if they had
- 0:15just listened to any of us and
- 0:17investigated properly
- 0:19then as i said none of these would be
- 0:21sat here because they'd done the job
- 0:23they were discriminated against from the
- 0:25very beginning whether that had been
- 0:27they were just seen as a druggie
- 0:29a homeless
- 0:31guy
- 0:31it's not acceptable police did get him
- 0:35in the end
- 0:36stephen did you have any involvement in
- 0:38his death i did not know no did you kill
- 0:40jack taylor did not know but they knew
- 0:43about stephen port from the beginning
- 0:45that's the ambulance but he addressed
- 0:47the emergency
- 0:49young boy
- 0:51after his first murder
- 0:53he made the first 999 call do you know
- 0:55he was breathing
- 0:58did you see anything happen at all
- 1:01no
- 1:02the chef from barking lied from the
- 1:04start meeting his victims online he'd
- 1:07take them to his flat once inside he'd
- 1:10spike their drinks with lethal doses of
- 1:12the date rape drug ghb his first victim
- 1:16anthony wallgate a fashion student from
- 1:19hull he was loud funny when he went down
- 1:22to london he just he loved it he loved
- 1:25everything about it and he was
- 1:27determined to be a success anthony was
- 1:29the first of four young men port killed
- 1:31in barking he dumped the 23 year old
- 1:34right outside his flat and told police
- 1:37the student had died of an overdose the
- 1:40initial response was appalling it was
- 1:42found the 19th of june and by the end of
- 1:43june that closed the case
- 1:45they just didn't do it they didn't do
- 1:47any checks on stephen park they did it
- 1:49on anthony
- 1:50who was the victim said this all the way
- 1:52through if he hasn't been stabbed he
- 1:54hasn't been shot he hasn't been beaten
- 1:56up why is it not suspicious anthony's
- 1:59student friends along with his family
- 2:00pleaded with police to investigate the
- 2:02death further but detectives embarking
- 2:05insisted there was nothing suspicious
- 2:07and i said then seven and a half years
- 2:09ago i'm telling you now he was murdered
- 2:12and
- 2:13it came out that he was at the inquests
- 2:16it emerged police failed to do basic
- 2:18forensic and digital checks on port his
- 2:21laptop which held vital clues was not
- 2:23examined by detectives and he literally
- 2:26at that time got away we made it if they
- 2:28could have been bothered to do it they
- 2:30would save three more boys
- 2:32young lads who had everything
- 2:34to live for two months after anthony was
- 2:37found another body was discovered dumped
- 2:39in the graveyard of saint margaret's
- 2:40church just 400 meters from port's flat
- 2:44it was gabriel cavari a 22 year old art
- 2:47student from slovakia and just three
- 2:49weeks later daniel whitworth was
- 2:51murdered left in the same place he was
- 2:5421.
- 2:56in a morbid twist both men were found by
- 2:59the same person who was walking her dogs
- 3:01through the graveyard i've come through
- 3:03and i've seen somebody else
- 3:05a different boy sitting in exactly the
- 3:08same position leaning up against the
- 3:10exact same wall and i'm thinking to
- 3:13myself
- 3:14please god no play is not another one
- 3:16slumped against the wall the second body
- 3:18barbara denham found was daniel
- 3:20whitworth port had planted a fake
- 3:22suicide note on him but police took it
- 3:25at face value and failed to see it was
- 3:28murder their performance was incompetent
- 3:30as there aren't words good enough for it
- 3:32but they were incompetent over and over
- 3:34and over again they're just indifferent
- 3:36to what's right in front of their eyes
- 3:38and that's been their attitude all the
- 3:39way through this they're totally
- 3:41totally to blame here
- 3:44they messed up enormously
- 3:47at the beginning
- 3:49port then did serve a short time in
- 3:50prison just a few months for the minor
- 3:53charge of perverting the course of
- 3:54justice but he was actually a serial
- 3:57murderer and once released he killed
- 3:59again
- 4:00this is cctv footage of port meeting
- 4:03jack taylor embarking it's now september
- 4:072015
- 4:08and hours after this was taken the 25
- 4:11year old was murdered we didn't just
- 4:13lose our brother
- 4:15we lost our best friend we you know he
- 4:18was our baby brother but
- 4:20in our lives we've both said the same
- 4:23he was our older brother because he you
- 4:25know he looked out for us in every way
- 4:29like the two killings before jack's body
- 4:31was again dumped in the nearby graveyard
- 4:34by port
- 4:35and once again police failed to link the
- 4:37murders but jack's sisters knew
- 4:39something wasn't right so they became
- 4:42the detectives searching for their
- 4:44brother's killer we felt like nothing
- 4:45was being done so we knew we had to take
- 4:47over and start investigating ourselves
- 4:49but we knew we had to do the right thing
- 4:50the right thing was to make sure
- 4:52that we found out what had happened to
- 4:53jack and to make sure this never happens
- 4:55again the inquest heard how jack sisters
- 4:58cracked the case in the weeks after
- 5:00their brother's death they searched the
- 5:02internet up to 30 times a day producing
- 5:04a case file they made 33 pages of notes
- 5:08in them they managed to link all the
- 5:10deaths which so far detectives had
- 5:12failed to do they didn't do what they
- 5:15were supposed to do they've let down the
- 5:16public that
- 5:17they've not just let down the boys and
- 5:20let down us as families
- 5:22they've let down the public that they're
- 5:23supposed to protect we do also
- 5:25understand that stephen paul took his
- 5:26life but
- 5:28we do also feel like the police do have
- 5:30blood on their hands
- 5:32because they might as well have just
- 5:33loaded a gun and handed it to him the
- 5:35metropolitan police has apologized to
- 5:37the victims families for the failings in
- 5:39this case but they deny homophobia was
- 5:42to blame i don't think the met is
- 5:44institutionally homophobic
- 5:47and i don't think that my colleagues are
- 5:49homophobic as well i don't think that
- 5:51has been an issue what absolutely has
- 5:53been is the errors that the officers at
- 5:56the time made
- 5:57i've said
- 5:59all along and i will still i will always
- 6:01say it was homophobia if that had been a
- 6:03young girl who was 23 dumped outside
- 6:06near the bins there would have been a
- 6:08lot more investigating if that was a
- 6:10woman
- 6:11stephen paul would have been looked into
- 6:13see this is jack taylor today no police
- 6:15officer has been disciplined over port
- 6:18some have in fact been promoted why
- 6:20should these people continue in their
- 6:22role if there wasn't good enough in 2014
- 6:25and there wasn't good enough in 2015
- 6:29what makes them good enough now it's
- 6:30disgusting
- 6:32but no inquests will bring jack back
- 6:35wells jack
- 6:36loved everything every day of the year
- 6:39christmas was his his big thing the
- 6:41christmas before he died he asked us all
- 6:44to wear christmas jumpers and uh we all
- 6:46said we would but when we all turned up
- 6:49we didn't so
- 6:51we never got to spend another christmas
- 6:53with him so what we've done ever since
- 6:55then is we all dress up at christmas
- 6:56every single one of us
- 6:58um
- 6:59[Music]
- 7:01in memory of him
