  80. 2:44You know.
  81. 2:45Yeah.
  82. 2:47Uh well, let me see. Let me ask you. You
  83. 2:48said you you dated John. How long did
  84. 2:50you guys date?
  85. 2:53I mean, I Well, I Are you guys Is this
  86. 2:55something
  87. 2:56I mean, you said that I was going to
  88. 2:58interview somebody about art and how you
  89. 2:59guys are Here's Here's I mean Stephanie,
  90. 3:02here's the situation. It's basically
  91. 3:04we you know, we knew that this when we
  92. 3:07saw this in the in in this Chrono that
  93. 3:09maybe, you know, there was some
  94. 3:10relationship there. That's what the
  95. 3:11Chrono seemed to indicate and we didn't
  96. 3:12want to come up to you at your desk and
  97. 3:15ask those kinds of questions or do
  98. 3:17anything. You know how up there people
  99. 3:18can see what's going on if you go into
  100. 3:20an interview room or people are in there
  101. 3:21getting supplies. So, we we wanted to
  102. 3:23afford you some privacy some
  103. 3:25confidentiality talk about this cuz we
  104. 3:26thought it might be, you know,
  105. 3:28something, you know, you're married to
  106. 3:29someone else obviously and so forth and
  107. 3:31that you may not want to, you know, talk
  108. 3:32about these things in that setting where
  109. 3:34someone, you know, we don't want the
  110. 3:35rumor mill or gossip or any of that kind
  111. 3:36of stuff to start.
  112. 3:37I mean So, we we did this just as as a
  113. 3:39means to try and speak to you in just a
  114. 3:41confidential place where you, you know,
  115. 3:43where where your business isn't out
  116. 3:44there for other people and in, you know,
  117. 3:46your division to know about.
  118. 3:47you know, God, that's been a million
  119. 3:48years ago. I mean
  120. 3:50you know,
  121. 3:51um
  122. 3:53What year is it now? 2009? I mean, I
  123. 3:55graduated in '82. '82, yeah.
  124. 3:58Um
  125. 4:00you know, we dated. Um I dated other
  126. 4:03guys. I'm sure he dated other girls. Um
  127. 4:07Well, let me ask you a
  128. 4:09Roughly, how long would you would you
  129. 4:10say you guys dated? Oh, jeez.
  130. 4:13Um
  131. 4:14I couldn't even say. I mean
  132. 4:17I started school there in '78. I started
  133. 4:20UCLA 1978.
  134. 4:22Mhm.
  135. 4:22I graduated in '82.
  136. 4:24Um I don't even remember what year he
  137. 4:27graduated, if it was a year or two
  138. 4:29before me. Okay. Um I think he was a
  139. 4:31little bit older than I was. I mean, you
  140. 4:34know, I can't remember if he was born
  141. 4:35Let's say I was born in '60, 1960. I
  142. 4:38don't know if he was born in '58 or '59.
  143. 4:40I mean, I you know, um I mean, I knew
  144. 4:42his parents. I knew his sister. His
  145. 4:44brother went to Northridge. Mhm. Um
  146. 4:47um
  147. 4:49you know, his sister spent the night at
  148. 4:50my house before. Obviously, I spent the
  149. 4:52night at his house before. He probably
  150. 4:54spent the night at my house before.
  151. 4:56Um you know, I
  152. 4:58I you know, I don't I What
  153. 5:00Correct me if I'm wrong, cuz from what
  154. 5:02you're telling me is you you guys dated
  155. 5:04while you were in college together,
  156. 5:05right?
  157. 5:06Yeah, and probably after college. Um I'm
  158. 5:09I can't
  159. 5:11Jeez, um I'm trying to think when I met
  160. 5:12my husband. I met my husband
  161. 5:15in I met I met Scott. Um
  162. 5:18Let's see.
  163. 5:20I was teaching DARE, cuz I met Scott
  164. 5:21when I was teaching DARE up in Oregon.
  165. 5:23But
  166. 5:24we had long stopped, you know,
  167. 5:27dating before that.
  168. 5:28haven't talked to him for a long time?
  169. 5:30Oh, I I think I haven't talked to him in
  170. 5:32a long time. Um I couldn't even tell you
  171. 5:34when the last time I talked to him.
  172. 5:36Um
  173. 5:37I met Scott, I'm thinking, in
  174. 5:39'92, maybe. Um April of '92. It was
  175. 5:44Scott being your husband. Yeah, I'm
  176. 5:45trying to think. I was teaching DARE.
  177. 5:48Let's see. What year is this? This is
  178. 5:50We'll be married. Like I'm married in
  179. 5:521996. I think I met Scott in '92. Prior
  180. 5:56to that, I couldn't tell you how long I
  181. 5:57had talked, you know, talked to John
  182. 6:00prior to that. But since you since you
  183. 6:02met your husband, Scott, you haven't
  184. 6:04talked to him?
  185. 6:05I mean, he may have called me
  186. 6:08once or twice before we got married. Um
  187. 6:12you know,
  188. 6:13jeez, I I lived I moved
  189. 6:16in 1994 cuz I lost my house in the
  190. 6:19earthquake. Oh, really?
  191. 6:20Um
  192. 6:21uh quite honestly, I probably keep in
  193. 6:23contact with
  194. 6:25a few people from the dorms. We We all
  195. 6:27We all lived on the 10th floor. Um and
  196. 6:31um
  197. 6:33there's
  198. 6:37about three or four people I keep in
  199. 6:38contact with. There's probably like six
  200. 6:40or eight of us that were all really
  201. 6:41close.
  202. 6:42Mhm. And who are those people?
  203. 6:44Oh, jeez. Um
  204. 6:46Diana Basta.
  205. 6:48Um
  206. 6:49The people I still keep I I haven't been
  207. 6:51in contact with her in a long time. Um I
  208. 6:55mean,
  209. 6:56you know, what's the what's I mean,
  210. 6:58what's this all about? I mean, Well, let
  211. 6:59me ask you.
  212. 7:00What ended the relationship between you
  213. 7:02and John?
  214. 7:04You know, I don't
  215. 7:05it was kind of a weird relationship. I
  216. 7:07mean, we we we dated. Um I can't say
  217. 7:11that he was my boyfriend. I don't know
  218. 7:12that he would consider me his
  219. 7:14girlfriend.
  220. 7:15Um we just we dated. We did things. I
  221. 7:17played sports in college. He played
  222. 7:19basketball.
  223. 7:20His brother played basketball.
  224. 7:22Um
  225. 7:24We just, you know, it just
  226. 7:27didn't work out. I mean, I don't know
  227. 7:29what to tell you. It was like I went out
  228. 7:31with other guys. Um saw other guys. I
  229. 7:33went on lots of vacations.
  230. 7:36Um you know, And and once you guys
  231. 7:39split, were you guys still friends or
  232. 7:40kind of
  233. 7:42you know I mean
  234. 7:44friendly, not friendly? No, I don't
  235. 7:46think it was not friendly. I mean we
  236. 7:48were friendly.
  237. 7:49I know that
  238. 7:51we went to Hawaii
  239. 7:53at one point.
  240. 7:56Another friend of mine who's actually
  241. 7:58dying right now
  242. 8:00was went to Hawaii with us at some
  243. 8:02point.
  244. 8:04Do you remember roughly when that was?
  245. 8:06Geez, um
  246. 8:08let me think.
  247. 8:10Mhm.
  248. 8:11I have to check my pictures um or I'd
  249. 8:14I'd say I'd ask Greg, but my friend Greg
  250. 8:15is like dying of liver cancer right now.
  251. 8:18Um
  252. 8:19Yeah, I mean I you know
  253. 8:22And you were saying that
  254. 8:23the It's 2009 now.
  255. 8:25Had you ever met his wife?
  256. 8:27I may have. Do you know do you remember
  257. 8:30her name or anything or
  258. 8:32Um
  259. 8:35um
  260. 8:37or what she did for a living or where
  261. 8:39she worked or anything about her?
  262. 8:42Well, I think she I think I'm going to
  263. 8:43say that I think she was a nurse.
  264. 8:45Um
  265. 8:48and I can't remember how he he said he
  266. 8:50met her.
  267. 8:51I mean I I Yeah, I mean it's been so
  268. 8:53long ago. Well, let me ask you, did you
  269. 8:55go to their wedding, you know? No, I
  270. 8:57didn't go to their wedding.
  271. 8:59Um no, I don't did not go to their
  272. 9:01wedding.
  273. 9:02Um
  274. 9:04I couldn't even tell you what year he
  275. 9:04got married. I mean, you know, it's it's
  276. 9:06been a million years ago. Do you
  277. 9:08remember if you ever talked to her cuz
  278. 9:09it seems like a lot of you who were
  279. 9:11at at the school UCLA, you guys kind of
  280. 9:13were friends during and after school.
  281. 9:15So, I don't know if you guys still
  282. 9:16associated afterwards when once he was
  283. 9:18married or anything.
  284. 9:20With him? Yeah.
  285. 9:21No, I don't think so. I mean
  286. 9:25I would say
  287. 9:26you know,
  288. 9:27the the people that were on the dorm
  289. 9:29floor, we'd have we'd have
  290. 9:30get-togethers.
  291. 9:32Um there's probably like four or five I
  292. 9:35I think he ever came. Um
  293. 9:37yeah, I don't think no, it was there was
  294. 9:39like it was mostly girls.
  295. 9:41You know,
  296. 9:43um a girl named Smita, Diane,
  297. 9:46um
  298. 9:47There's there's two Dianes, but the one
  299. 9:49Diane I don't think she ever came. I
  300. 9:50kind of lost contact with her. We were
  301. 9:52good friends on the floor.
  302. 9:54Um
  303. 9:55yeah, I mean I don't you know, again I I
  304. 9:58mean what
  305. 9:59you know, I I don't understand why
  306. 10:01you're talking about some guy dated a
  307. 10:02million years ago.
  308. 10:03Well, do you know what happened to his
  309. 10:04wife? Yeah, I know she got killed.
  310. 10:08What did you what did you hear about
  311. 10:09that?
  312. 10:10I I saw a poster at work. Um I'm sure I
  313. 10:13spoke to him about it. Um
  314. 10:16I think I spoke to another friend of his
  315. 10:18about it.
  316. 10:20Um And how did how did you first learn
  317. 10:22about that?
  318. 10:24Jeez.
  319. 10:26Someone could have called me. I could
  320. 10:27have heard it at work.
  321. 10:29Um
  322. 10:31I think at one point there may have been
  323. 10:32a flyer or something. I know a good
  324. 10:34friend of his Were you on the job back
  325. 10:36then when that happened?
  326. 10:37Yeah, I think so. Yeah, I'm sure I was
  327. 10:39on the job. That's why I would have
  328. 10:40heard about it with the flyer. Um
  329. 10:43He had a good friend Mike
  330. 10:45Mike
  331. 10:46Boldrick, Mike
  332. 10:48Um
  333. 10:50Um
  334. 10:52Anyways, a
  335. 10:54he may have lived in the dorms. I don't
  336. 10:55remember if that's how I met him.
  337. 10:57Um I I may have talked to him. I mean
  338. 11:00you know, I don't remember how I heard.
  339. 11:02I mean I don't even remember what year
  340. 11:03it was. And you think he he thought you
  341. 11:05said you thought his wife was a nurse.
  342. 11:06Do you have any idea where she was
  343. 11:07working at the time or
  344. 11:09did he ever mention that to you?
  345. 11:11Was it a hospital or a doctor's office
  346. 11:13or
  347. 11:13he must have mentioned it. Now now that
  348. 11:15you're bringing that up, I think she
  349. 11:17worked at a hospital somewhere. And
  350. 11:18yeah, I may have met her at a hospital.
  351. 11:21Um
  352. 11:21I may have talked to her once or twice.
  353. 11:24Um
  354. 11:25At a at a hospital?
  355. 11:26Or more. Um
  356. 11:28you know, But being that you were kind
  357. 11:30of
  358. 11:31you to see uh John.
  359. 11:33You know, was it everything okay between
  360. 11:35you guys? I mean there was never
  361. 11:37anything uncomfortable or anything
  362. 11:38between you and her?
  363. 11:39Um.
  364. 11:42You know, I don't know. I mean it's got
  365. 11:44it's been so many years. I mean
  366. 11:47the uncomfortable I mean it
  367. 11:51I can't even I can't even remember if we
  368. 11:53had a conversation. I mean we may have I
  369. 11:55may have I may have seen her at his
  370. 11:57apartment I you know
  371. 11:59Geez, how many years ago was that? I
  372. 12:01don't even know what year she you know

  391. 12:46his brother played basketball at
  392. 12:48Northridge.
  393. 12:49Um in fact I was just coming across some
  394. 12:51pictures that I just scanned
  395. 12:53uh scanned from um
  396. 12:56I take a lot of photos. Um like 10,000.
  397. 13:00And I just did a service where I scanned
  398. 13:02everything.
  399. 13:04Um and I'd seen some pictures of his
  400. 13:05brother playing basketball.
  401. 13:05Where did you just put them all on your
  402. 13:06computer so you could have them
  403. 13:07accessible and do things with them?
  404. 13:09Well, my partner is a big photo thing
  405. 13:11and he got a deal to scan. So I spent a
  406. 13:15ton of time just scanning photos. I mean
  407. 13:18I paid a company to do it. Mhm. Um so
  408. 13:20I've got photos of I mean his brother
  409. 13:22his sister you know 10,000 pictures? Oh
  410. 13:25yeah. How long did that take them?
  411. 13:28Months. Okay.
  412. 13:30Now, what what do they Do they put that
  413. 13:31on a I'm just curious myself. Did they
  414. 13:33put it on a Did they get get that all on
  415. 13:34one DVD? They don't need like a hard
  416. 13:36drive or anything?
  417. 13:37no. There's like I think 11 DVDs. Yeah,
  418. 13:40I haven't even I don't even have time
  419. 13:41Oh, they It's It's a series of DVDs that
  420. 13:43they put them on? Oh, yeah.
  421. 13:44Oh, okay.
  422. 13:45Yeah, I mean, I got to
  423. 13:45that familiar with computer stuff, so
  424. 13:47that's why I was asking.
  425. 13:48like 11 DVDs.
  426. 13:49Oh, okay. So, you know, um
  427. 13:52I haven't had a chance to go through
  428. 13:53them. I I
  429. 13:54You could go through and pick which ones
  430. 13:56you don't want. I don't have time to do
  431. 13:57that. Right.
  432. 13:58You know, so I So, like you said, did I
  433. 14:00you know,
  434. 14:01I don't think we ever socialized. Um
  435. 14:04you know, uh he'd still call me. Um I
  436. 14:07can't say that I would I mean, if he's
  437. 14:08married, I don't know that I would have
  438. 14:10called him. I mean, maybe. Who knows? I
  439. 14:12you know, I I don't know. It's been a
  440. 14:13million years ago. How long was John
  441. 14:15married before his wife died? I couldn't
  442. 14:18I have no idea.
  443. 14:19Yeah, I have no idea.
  444. 14:21And uh
  445. 14:22after his wife died, did did you talk to
  446. 14:25him again or anything? Yeah, I mean, I
  447. 14:28did talk to him. Mhm. I talked to him,
  448. 14:30probably his parents,
  449. 14:32um
  450. 14:33probably some other friends, um you
  451. 14:36know,
  452. 14:38I'm sure I talked to him. Yeah. Um
  453. 14:41But, you don't you don't You're not sure
  454. 14:42where he moved to after he got married?
  455. 14:44No idea. I mean,
  456. 14:45Never went over to to visit him or
  457. 14:48think I mean, I don't think so. I mean,
  458. 14:50um
  459. 14:52I don't know. I don't I mean, I don't
  460. 14:53think I did. Um
  461. 14:56I know he lived on Roscoe for a long,
  462. 14:58long time.
  463. 14:59Um
  464. 15:04I mean, he I may know. I mean, he may
  465. 15:06have told me where they lived. Somewhere
  466. 15:07in the Valley. I mean, he may have said
  467. 15:09he lived over such and such, but I I
  468. 15:11couldn't tell you specifically where.
  469. 15:14But, you don't remember specifically
  470. 15:15ever going over to visit him or visit
  471. 15:17them at where wherever he moved when he
  472. 15:18left Roscoe.
  473. 15:20I I I honestly I don't know. I don't
  474. 15:22think so, but Okay. I you know, I don't
  475. 15:25want to say, "No, I don't think so." and
  476. 15:26then he says, "Oh, yes, she came over
  477. 15:28for something, dropped something off."
  478. 15:30You know,
  479. 15:32I'm I don't know. So, if you did go over
  480. 15:34there, it'd just be like a a quick
  481. 15:35thing, like like you were saying, drop
  482. 15:37something off or Maybe, um
  483. 15:40But you don't remember as far as like
  484. 15:41going there to have dinner or like a
  485. 15:43social anything at the house, party?
  486. 15:47Well, if you guys know something, I I
  487. 15:48just I can't I don't know. I don't think
  488. 15:51so.
  489. 15:51I mean, but
  490. 15:53After uh
  491. 15:55John's wife died, and you said you may
  492. 15:57have been talking to him. Did uh your
  493. 15:59relationship start up again?
  494. 16:02I would say no. Um
  495. 16:06Again, can you give me a year? I mean,
  496. 16:08this is like 2009.
  497. 16:10She died in 1986? Yeah, I think it was
  498. 16:13'86.
  499. 16:131986? Okay. Um
  500. 16:16Like I said, I'm I'm faintly remembering
  501. 16:19that
  502. 16:21um I went to Hawaii
  503. 16:24with my friend Greg. Greg and I got
  504. 16:25certified for scuba diving.
  505. 16:28Um and I'm thinking that John met us
  506. 16:31there, meaning Greg and I.
  507. 16:33Um
  508. 16:35That could have been
  509. 16:37I got certified
  510. 16:40toward the end of
  511. 16:41'88 or I mean yeah, '88, '89.
  512. 16:45Um
  513. 16:48cuz I got recertified again and and it
  514. 16:50had been like over
  515. 16:5310 10 years, so I got recertified. My
  516. 16:56husband and I got recertified. Um
  517. 16:59and I'm pretty sure that John met us
  518. 17:02there.
  519. 17:04Um again, I'd have to tell you what year
  520. 17:06it was, I'd have to look at my pictures.
  521. 17:08Um
  522. 17:09you know,
  523. 17:11um and other than that, I can't even
  524. 17:13say. He may have called me
  525. 17:16you know, at my home. Um I may have
  526. 17:18called him. Um I don't think
  527. 17:22he got together with our group. Um
  528. 17:25think after his wife's death. Uh even
  529. 17:28before I don't
  530. 17:29You know,
  531. 17:31we went to weddings together. I you
  532. 17:33know, Did you
  533. 17:34pictures. I I guess it's I couldn't tell
  534. 17:36you years. It's been a million years
  535. 17:38ago. After he after he got
  536. 17:41uh married or whatever, were you were
  537. 17:43you dating anybody?
  538. 17:45In particular let alone with the other
  539. 17:47firemen.
  540. 17:471986 you said?
  541. 17:49he got married yeah in around 85, 86,
  542. 17:51something like that.
  543. 17:52Were you seeing anyone seriously or
  544. 17:55God.
  545. 17:56I couldn't say.
  546. 17:58Um
  547. 18:00Jeez, I'm trying to think. I mean, um
  548. 18:02you know, I dated a fireman. Um What was
  549. 18:06his name? Mike Arndt. Um and I'm trying
  550. 18:09to think
  551. 18:10Was he in LAFD or He was LAFD. Um
  552. 18:14I'm trying to think when I went. I
  553. 18:15probably met Mike. I went to Devonshire.
  554. 18:19Let's see, I left Hollywood in 80 I I
  555. 18:22worked Hollywood 84
  556. 18:25to 85, I think.
  557. 18:26And then I went to Devonshire and that's
  558. 18:28when I met Mike.
  559. 18:30Um
  560. 18:31and some other firemen.
  561. 18:34And
  562. 18:34What at the station next door? No,
  563. 18:36actually Cuz I used to work Hollywood so
  564. 18:38I was just wondering if it was the
  565. 18:39station next
  566. 18:39It was in when I worked Devonshire I met
  567. 18:41Mike.
  568. 18:42Oh, okay. All right.
  569. 18:44And I'm trying to think. I went to
  570. 18:45Devonshire in 85 and I'm thinking that
  571. 18:50I would have met him probably sometime
  572. 18:52shortly after I went to Devonshire cuz I
  573. 18:55met him and his I actually met his
  574. 18:57buddies at a fight.
  575. 18:59Um and then
  576. 19:01Mike and I dated
  577. 19:03you know, just really kind of casually.
  578. 19:06Uh-huh. Um
  579. 19:09and we remained very you know, we
  580. 19:10remained good friends. Um
  581. 19:12You still in touch with him or
  582. 19:14Unfortunately, he passed away. Oh,
  583. 19:15really? He died in a um he had a car
  584. 19:18crash. Um
  585. 19:20he did uh race cars and um he went
  586. 19:23heading into a wall.
  587. 19:24Mhm.
  588. 19:26I couldn't tell you what year that was.
  589. 19:28Um but he passed away. He was in a coma
  590. 19:30and they pulled the the plug.
  591. 19:32Right. Seems like mhm uh anyway. Um
  592. 19:36so
  593. 19:37you know
  594. 19:38I couldn't even tell you what what year
  595. 19:40I'm thinking I went to Devonshire in '85
  596. 19:42and I know I met the guys cuz I it was
  597. 19:44kind of a funny incident of how I met
  598. 19:45them. And that's how I remember. It was
  599. 19:48sometime probably '85. Right. Um you
  600. 19:51know, if we specifically I don't even
  601. 19:53know if they'd remember. The other two
  602. 19:54are now
  603. 19:55married to somebody else cuz I kind of
  604. 19:58all three I mean
  605. 19:59Did you guys socialize like when you
  606. 20:01were out with Mike did those guys come
  607. 20:02out with you too? Was it kind of like
  608. 20:03did you do stuff with Mike's friends or
  609. 20:06um there were three there was two
  610. 20:07firemen Eric and Gary. Um I met them
  611. 20:10first.
  612. 20:12Then they introduced me to Mike.
  613. 20:13So that's how I met Mike and Mike dated
  614. 20:15Mike Mike and I dated. Mhm. So um
  615. 20:19and not I wouldn't even say I couldn't
  616. 20:20even tell you for how long because then
  617. 20:22it was so we decided you know, it wasn't
  618. 20:24working out and we'd be better friends
  619. 20:26and
  620. 20:27you know, he introduced me I think
  621. 20:29to some other guy on that who now is on
  622. 20:32LAPD. Um
  623. 20:34uh
  624. 20:36Randy Cordobas.
  625. 20:39Um
  626. 20:40I don't think I know him.
  627. 20:41He's got a twin brother who's on the
  628. 20:43fire department. That's how I met Randy
  629. 20:46um because he had a twin brother a
  630. 20:48identical twin on the fire department.
  631. 20:50Okay. Um
  632. 20:52and And what you were dating
  633. 20:54I dated him.
  634. 20:55When I couldn't tell you. It was before
  635. 20:57he came on the job.
  636. 20:59Oh, before Randy came on the job? Yeah.
  637. 21:01Oh, okay. And that was
  638. 21:03um
  639. 21:05I I'm God, I'm trying to remember. If
  640. 21:07Mike Mike may have
  641. 21:11I'm trying to remember.
  642. 21:13Mike may have dated um
  643. 21:16a girl that he dated
  644. 21:19I don't know. God, it sounds too weird.
  645. 21:21Um
  646. 21:23Randy may have dated a gal that Mike was
  647. 21:25dating.
  648. 21:27And that and then Mike
  649. 21:29Randy broke up with that gal.
  650. 21:31I couldn't even tell you what the gal's
  651. 21:32name if I'm even thinking of the story
  652. 21:34right. And then I started dating Randy.
  653. 21:38I you know, so again, I mean
  654. 21:42not like I was a huge floozy or
  655. 21:43anything, but
  656. 21:44No, but you know, I mean a lot of times,
  657. 21:46right? At least from my female partners
  658. 21:49that I've had, you know, it's hard
  659. 21:50dating guys that aren't involved in kind
  660. 21:52of our circle, right? Because some a lot
  661. 21:54some guys are intimidated by, you know,
  662. 21:56women police officers and Yeah, Randy
  663. 21:58was like an I'm Randy was like an
  664. 21:59engineer at the time. Uh he was like a
  665. 22:00some kind of an engineer. On a truck on
  666. 22:02a rig? On a fire truck?
  667. 22:04um an engineer um A professional
  668. 22:06engineer. I don't know.
  669. 22:07he lost a job and then came on on the
  670. 22:09department.
  671. 22:10I see. So,
  672. 22:12um But getting back to some stuff, as
  673. 22:14far as you recall after John's wife, I
  674. 22:19did you start a relationship again with
  675. 22:21with John or dating casually or anything
  676. 22:24like that?
  677. 22:26Like I said,
  678. 22:28he met Greg and I in Hawaii. Okay.
  679. 22:31Um
  680. 22:33That was something you guys kind of
  681. 22:35planned together like go as a group or
  682. 22:37you got ran into him or
  683. 22:38No, I I think that
  684. 22:41obviously I must have talked to him
  685. 22:43and I said, "Hey, I'm going to Hawaii
  686. 22:45with my buddy Greg. We're we're
  687. 22:47we're scuba We just got certified scuba
  688. 22:49diving. Um
  689. 22:51uh we're going to be in Hawaii. Hey, if
  690. 22:53you want to come and join us, come join
  691. 22:54us." Right.
  692. 22:55And I I think that's what it was.
  693. 22:58Um
  694. 22:58I met I may have asked some other people
  695. 23:00to as well.
  696. 23:02Um
  697. 23:02you know,
  698. 23:04uh what island did we go to?
  699. 23:08I think the Big Island and Kauai. He
  700. 23:10either met us on the Big Island or
  701. 23:11Kauai. I'm thinking
  702. 23:14Greg and I might have scuba dived a lot
  703. 23:16in on the Big Island
  704. 23:18as well as Kauai. I'm I I don't remember
  705. 23:21which island again I'd have to look at
  706. 23:22my pictures.
  707. 23:24I traveled a lot
  708. 23:26on my vacations. I mean I was always
  709. 23:28gone for at least a month.
  710. 23:30Um
  711. 23:31and I would go places and I would either
  712. 23:33run into people or you know
  713. 23:36you know, meet people.
  714. 23:37Um
  715. 23:39And Greg, uh this Greg we're talking
  716. 23:41about he was
  717. 23:43like a someone you were dating or just a
  718. 23:46buddy? No, you know what? I would I
  719. 23:47would say
  720. 23:49we started out um
  721. 23:51probably just buddies
  722. 23:53um
  723. 23:54and either I was with somebody or he was
  724. 23:56with somebody but was all we it was kind
  725. 23:58of like we ended up just kind of being
  726. 23:59like brother and sister. Um
  727. 24:03and maybe he wanted something more but
  728. 24:05um
  729. 24:06you know, it just it never you know,
  730. 24:08worked out but we we we did things
  731. 24:10together. Um
  732. 24:12you know, I would consider him I've
  733. 24:13probably known him
  734. 24:16let's see I've been on the job almost 26
  735. 24:18years.
  736. 24:19I've probably known Greg 23 24 years.
  737. 24:22Um Do you still talk to him?
  738. 24:24Oh yeah, he's dying of liver cancer
  739. 24:26right now. Yeah. Yeah, so um so you
  740. 24:30know, I I consider him a good friend um
  741. 24:34you know um
  742. 24:38you know, I don't know what to tell you
  743. 24:39on that. Um I mean when when you heard
  744. 24:41about uh
  745. 24:43John's wife being killed, I mean what
  746. 24:45was your what was your reaction? I mean
  747. 24:47what did
  748. 24:48you thought you heard about it what
  749. 24:49through a friend or in a bulletin or
  750. 24:51something?
  751. 24:51a friend or a bulletin. I obviously I
  752. 24:53mean I called I called the family.
  753. 24:56I am I called maybe some of his friends
  754. 24:58that that that I knew and I mean
  755. 24:59obviously it shocked you if you're if I
  756. 25:01heard it at work, you know, um which I
  757. 25:04may have I I faintly remember a bulletin
  758. 25:06going around.
  759. 25:08Um
  760. 25:09Either that or somebody called me. I I I
  761. 25:10I also don't remember. Right.
  762. 25:12Um
  763. 25:13uh and then I called probably called his
  764. 25:15family,
  765. 25:16um called uh
  766. 25:18I
  767. 25:19don't initially
  768. 25:21I can't say if I initially spoke to him
  769. 25:22or not. I honestly don't remember.
  770. 25:25I may have said to somebody, "Hey, have
  771. 25:27him call me if he wants to talk."
  772. 25:29And then he may have done that.
  773. 25:30Uh-huh. Um
  774. 25:32you know, um
  775. 25:36Do you know what the circumstances were
  776. 25:38regarding her death? Mm.
  777. 25:42Geez, let me think back.
  778. 25:44Um
  779. 25:46geez,
  780. 25:47I don't know if it was you know, if it
  781. 25:49was a burglary or something. Uh yeah,
  782. 25:51it's I mean it's been so many years I I
  783. 25:54mean I can faintly
  784. 25:55think that I may have saw a flyer. Yeah.
  785. 25:57Uh may have had her picture on it, you
  786. 26:00know, um I mean
  787. 26:02That's why I say if somebody had called
  788. 26:04me,
  789. 26:05I may not have known what her last name
  790. 26:07was. I may have I mean maybe if you told
  791. 26:09me I would remember it. Um Do you
  792. 26:11remember her first name?
  793. 26:13Uh
  794. 26:14Shelly, um
  795. 26:15Sherry,
  796. 26:17I don't something maybe you know,
  797. 26:20um like I said it's been so many years
  798. 26:22and
  799. 26:23um
  800. 26:24From all the years as far as you can
  801. 26:25remember, you don't do you do you
  802. 26:27remember ever talking to her? Just Well,
  803. 26:29I
  804. 26:30I said earlier, you know, I'm I mean
  805. 26:33I may have, you know, I may have talked
  806. 26:36to her.
  807. 26:37Um I it sound I you know,
  808. 26:39You mentioned a hospital maybe. You may
  809. 26:41have talked to her at a hospital.
  810. 26:43Yeah, um
  811. 26:45yeah, I may have
  812. 26:47you know, I'm I'm thinking back now you
  813. 26:48guys are bringing up all these old
  814. 26:49memories. No, it kind of dusts off the
  815. 26:51cobwebs and things.
  816. 26:53Um
  817. 26:57I'm thinking that
  818. 27:00because I mean, we would date, he would
  819. 27:01date other people, I would date other
  820. 27:02people. And I think, you know,
  821. 27:07at one point, I mean, he may have been
  822. 27:10dating her or I don't know, maybe he was
  823. 27:13married. I don't even remember.
  824. 27:15And I'm like, you know what? Why are you
  825. 27:16calling me if you're either dating her
  826. 27:19or living with her or married to her? I
  827. 27:20I cuz I honestly don't remember the time
  828. 27:22frame. Um and I'm like, come on, knock
  829. 27:24it off. And I'm And now I'm thinking I
  830. 27:26put may I may have gone to her and say,
  831. 27:27"Hey, you know what?
  832. 27:28You know what? Is he dating you? He's
  833. 27:31He's bothering me." Um and so I'm
  834. 27:33thinking that we had a conversation
  835. 27:34about that.
  836. 27:35Um
  837. 27:37one or two, maybe.
  838. 27:39You know, I It could have been three. I
  839. 27:41don't want to say I had three
  840. 27:42conversations with her. Like at Like at
  841. 27:44her work or at their at their house or
  842. 27:47No, I'm thinking that I
  843. 27:48You know, he obviously must have told me
  844. 27:50where she worked. I'm thinking it was a
  845. 27:52hospital somewhere
  846. 27:54in LA. And I just I mean, I could have
  847. 27:56been
  848. 27:58Again, what year was that? Where was I
  849. 27:59working?
  850. 28:00Um
  851. 28:07You know, I don't I don't I'm trying to
  852. 28:08think of where I
  853. 28:10When did you say they got married?
  854. 28:13I don't know. I think it was like
  855. 28:15in '85 or '86 or something like that.
  856. 28:18Yeah, we we we We just kind of picked
  857. 28:20this up. We don't, you know, we don't
  858. 28:21know a lot about it.
  859. 28:30I mean, I could have been working in
  860. 28:31Hollywood, it sounds like, if if that's
  861. 28:33where I was working.
  862. 28:35Um so, I could have said, "Okay, well,
  863. 28:37you know," and I went talk to her.
  864. 28:39Um and just said, "Hey, you know what?
  865. 28:41You know, if he's dating you, he's he's
  866. 28:44keeps calling me. Why don't you tell him
  867. 28:46to knock it off or whatever?" and you
  868. 28:48know, because I had probably would have
  869. 28:49told him to knock it off. You would have
  870. 28:50told John? Oh, yeah. I mean, I would
  871. 28:52have said, "Hey, you know,
  872. 28:54and again, But you wanted to tell her,
  873. 28:57too. You wanted them both to know. Yeah,
  874. 28:59I mean, you know, if you get you're
  875. 29:00getting a
  876. 29:01called and then I'm trying I'm faintly
  877. 29:03remembering
  878. 29:04uh
  879. 29:05when Scott moved in with me in 1993.
  880. 29:08Uh
  881. 29:09sometime in '93 cuz I met Scott in in
  882. 29:14in April of '92. I was teaching DARE up
  883. 29:16in Oregon. Mhm. Um
  884. 29:18and
  885. 29:21um
  886. 29:23he moved down. In fact, he may have
  887. 29:25moved down in '92. Uh
  888. 29:27'92 or '93. There was the big
  889. 29:29earthquake. No, when was the big
  890. 29:30earthquake?
  891. 29:31No, '94.
  892. 29:32'94. Yeah.
  893. 29:33So, he
  894. 29:35I think Scott might have might moved in
  895. 29:37in '93. Sometime in '93.
  896. 29:41Excuse me. Um
  897. 29:43I haven't had my breakfast yet. Um and
  898. 29:45so
  899. 29:47um
  900. 29:48Um excuse me.
  901. 29:50Um
  902. 29:51and so I faintly recall that John may
  903. 29:54have called a few times and I'm like,
  904. 29:56"Hey, you know, I've got He goes, "Well,
  905. 29:58can you I was like, you know, can you
  906. 29:59talk or something?" I'm like, "You know,
  907. 30:00no, I can't talk. I've got, you know,
  908. 30:02I'm living with somebody." Right.
  909. 30:04You know, and and that could have been a
  910. 30:05few times. It could have been once.
  911. 30:06Could have been twice. Could have been
  912. 30:07three times. Yeah, I don't know, you
  913. 30:09know. Um
  914. 30:10And that's during the period of time of
  915. 30:11the earthquake that you're talking Well,
  916. 30:13no. Probably probably after Scott moved
  917. 30:15in. I think I met Scott in April of '92.
  918. 30:18Okay, right before.
  919. 30:19April of '92 cuz I was te- I I stopped
  920. 30:22teaching DARE
  921. 30:29I think I stopped teaching DARE sometime
  922. 30:30in '92. Mhm.
  923. 30:32Um
  924. 30:34And when you and when you say that you
  925. 30:36may have
  926. 30:37um you know that you talked to his wife
  927. 30:39said, "Hey, you or you know, I don't
  928. 30:41know if it was I guess it wasn't his
  929. 30:42wife at that time, girlfriend or
  930. 30:43whatever and
  931. 30:44Yeah, I don't know if it was his wife or
  932. 30:45his I I I I mean, quite honestly, I
  933. 30:46don't even remember.
  934. 30:47When you said like, "Hey, you know, he's
  935. 30:49calling me. He needs to knock it off."
  936. 30:50or what have you. I mean, was that was
  937. 30:51that civil? Was there I mean, did it Oh,
  938. 30:53yeah, no, there was not I don't think
  939. 30:54there was anything It was if the
  940. 30:55conversation lasted a a a a few minutes,
  941. 30:58I can't even remember. It wasn't like,
  942. 30:59you know, we went out to lunch or
  943. 31:00anything.
  944. 31:01Right, but there was no like arguments
  945. 31:02or fights or it didn't get heated or
  946. 31:04anything like that.
  947. 31:05I recall, no. I mean
  948. 31:07I would think that would stand out, I
  949. 31:09would think. Now, again, that's not
  950. 31:11standing out in my mind. Um
  951. 31:14you know
  952. 31:16So, you didn't have any problems with
  953. 31:17her then? You didn't have any issues
  954. 31:19with her? No, I mean But let me let me
  955. 31:21ask you.
  956. 31:22Seems like you didn't have any issue.
  957. 31:24Now, did she have an issue with you as
  958. 31:26far as because now you're telling her,
  959. 31:28"Hey
  960. 31:29you know, tell him to stop calling us."
  961. 31:30You know, she's like, "Yeah."
  962. 31:32You know, you figure she'd be threatened
  963. 31:34by you. You know, I
  964. 31:36I don't know. I mean From what you
  965. 31:38remember as far as when you talked to
  966. 31:39her, maybe you didn't take it as
  967. 31:41serious, but maybe, you know, did she?
  968. 31:44Did she was bothered
  969. 31:44like was she throwing things at me or
  970. 31:46something or Well, no, just You know. as
  971. 31:47far as
  972. 31:48you're trying to explain like, "Hey,
  973. 31:50have him stop calling me, you know, stop
  974. 31:51playing games."
  975. 31:52I I I tell you
  976. 31:54if the conversation I couldn't even tell
  977. 31:56you how long the conversation If you
  978. 31:57said, "Did it last a half an hour? Did
  979. 31:59it last 3 minutes? Did it last 20
  980. 32:00minutes?" I can't even remember. It's
  981. 32:02been so long ago, you know? Um You just
  982. 32:05remember talking to her, telling him to
  983. 32:07that's why you said, "How many times you
  984. 32:08talked to her?" I don't know how many
  985. 32:09times I talked to her. Maybe it was
  986. 32:10once, maybe it was twice, maybe it was
  987. 32:12three times. You know, I I I honestly
  988. 32:14don't know. Right.
  989. 32:16I don't know what year it was. Um
  990. 32:19if you if he said, "I met her in such
  991. 32:21and such year." I'd go, "Okay, well, I
  992. 32:22don't even know what year year he met
  993. 32:24her." Um
  994. 32:25I graduated from UCLA in 1982, okay?
  995. 32:30I graduated in '82.
  996. 32:31Like I said, I don't know if he
  997. 32:32graduated I know he was
  998. 32:35he little older than I was. So, I don't
  999. 32:37know if he graduated a year before or 2
1000. 32:38years before because people are on
  1001. 32:39different
1002. 32:41either on the 4-year program or the
  1003. 32:425-year program.
1004. 32:45What year did you come on the job?
  1005. 32:4783.
1006. 32:48Oh, so almost pretty much immediately
1007. 32:50after you got out of school?
  1008. 32:52Yeah, I worked at a law firm for a year.
1009. 32:55Um, and then came on the job.
1010. 32:58But in anyway, in regards to seeing him,
  1011. 33:01not seeing him,
1012. 33:02we went to friends' weddings that were,
  1013. 33:04you know,
  1014. 33:06from UCLA.
1015. 33:07I may have gone to some of his friends'
1016. 33:09weddings from where he worked.
1017. 33:12He may have gone to things with me. You
  1018. 33:14know,
  1019. 33:17you know, I mean, I I I
1020. 33:19don't know how many times we went to do
1021. 33:20things, you know, or didn't do things.
  1022. 33:23Right. Like I said, his sister,
  1023. 33:26um,
  1024. 33:27I know his sister,
1025. 33:30his brother, his sister I know stayed at
  1026. 33:32my townhouse
  1027. 33:34a number of times. I couldn't tell you
  1028. 33:36how many times.
  1029. 33:37Right. Um,
1030. 33:38I would watch his brother, you know,
1031. 33:41take pictures at a basketball game or or
  1032. 33:43two.
1033. 33:43Where was your townhouse at? In Granada
  1034. 33:45Hills.
1035. 33:47Um, uh, below the Odyssey.
  1036. 33:49I don't know where that is. Oh, I'm
  1037. 33:50sorry. The 405 and the 5. Um, the 405
  1038. 33:53and
  1039. 33:54the the 405 turns into the 5, the 118.
1040. 33:57Um, they they came down in the
  1041. 33:59earthquake. Okay. So. Okay.
  1042. 34:02And you were saying
1043. 34:03when you went to see her,
1044. 34:06do you do you remember if it was at her
  1045. 34:08house or at
1046. 34:09at the place she worked at?
  1047. 34:12No, I'm thinking that I'm thinking that
  1048. 34:14it was probably
1049. 34:16for some reason I want to say that the
1050. 34:18hospital seemed that, you know, if if
1051. 34:21you say he got married in
1052. 34:2385 or something, I'm thinking that, you
1053. 34:25know, maybe the hospital was on my way
  1054. 34:27to work in Hollywood. I mean, that's
  1055. 34:30kind of sounding familiar.
  1056. 34:32Um,
1057. 34:33Would you have gone on duty?
  1058. 34:35Oh, no. I'm sure I wouldn't. If I No,
1059. 34:37I'm I'm pretty good about not doing
  1060. 34:39stuff.
1061. 34:40You know, I mean No, I'm not saying that
1062. 34:42you know, you haven't done stuff on
  1063. 34:43duty, but I I I would have I mean I
1064. 34:46would have been working with somebody.
  1065. 34:48Okay. You know, so
  1066. 34:50I wouldn't I wouldn't think. I mean, I
1067. 34:51try to avoid doing stuff on duty. So.
1068. 34:55So, you would have gone if it was in
1069. 34:57route to work, you more than likely
1070. 34:58would have gone to her work and had this
  1071. 35:00discussion with her. I mean, that's
  1072. 35:02sounding familiar. I mean, that's Now
1073. 35:04that you guys are bringing this stuff
  1074. 35:05up,
1075. 35:07I mean, it sound that sounds familiar.
  1076. 35:09But again, I mean, you know,
  1077. 35:12What's I mean, what's this got to do
1078. 35:13with me dating him and you know, her
  1079. 35:16getting killed? I mean, I I don't you
  1080. 35:18know, I don't have anything to do with
  1081. 35:19it and
  1082. 35:20you got something that's Somebody said,
1083. 35:22you know, whatever. I mean, Well, like
1084. 35:25we said, we we just literally got this
1085. 35:26the other day and and you're going
1086. 35:28through it Yeah. You guys
1087. 35:29I mean, she's next next door. Right. And
1088. 35:32and so, you know, I mean, obviously,
1089. 35:33it's like we recognize the name. We know
1090. 35:35you know, you work next door to us and
1091. 35:36so, we're trying to get some background.
1092. 35:38We're trying to figure this out. I mean,
1093. 35:39this is from a long time ago.
1094. 35:41You know, and and and things have been
1095. 35:42kind of slow for us and so, you know,
1096. 35:44Chief Beck has said, "Hey, you know, I
  1097. 35:46want you guys working. I don't want you
1098. 35:47just sitting around reading the paper."
1099. 35:48Yeah. So, he's kind of pushing some
1100. 35:50older cases out even to the guys that
1101. 35:51work active cases because, you know, and
1102. 35:53so, we see this and we're just like,
  1103. 35:54"Oh, well,
1104. 35:55you know, we want to talk to you about
1105. 35:56it, but of course, the only reason we
1106. 35:57did it here is because we're getting
1107. 35:58into some pretty personal stuff in your
  1108. 36:00relationship
  1109. 36:01my husband's on the job and we've been
  1110. 36:03married
  1111. 36:04for 10 years.
1112. 36:04We don't want to take the risk in one of
1113. 36:05those interview rooms and even with the
  1114. 36:06door closed, someone's going to get
1115. 36:08supplies and sees on a monitor, hears or
  1116. 36:09whatever.
  1117. 36:10I appreciate it. I mean, I appreciate
  1118. 36:11it. Like I said,
  1119. 36:12That's where people go when there's
  1120. 36:13orals, you know, when they're doing
1121. 36:14orals, guys will go in there and try and
1122. 36:15watch and go, "Oh, what are the answers
1123. 36:16to the questions?" you know.
1124. 36:17know that. Yeah, so so we just we just
1125. 36:19want to afford you the most privacy and
  1126. 36:20confidentiality we could. No, I
  1127. 36:22appreciate it. Like I said, I mean, this
1128. 36:24goes way back and I mean, it was very
  1129. 36:26sad. You know, obviously
  1130. 36:29um um
  1131. 36:30I I haven't you know I
1132. 36:33when we were in college
1133. 36:35some of us would go down to his house in
1134. 36:36San Diego. I went down to his house with
  1135. 36:38him.
  1136. 36:39You know, with with him and I know I I'm
1137. 36:42trying to think of some other people
1138. 36:43that may have gone down to
1139. 36:44where he grew up? Is down there? Yeah,
  1140. 36:45down in San Diego.
  1141. 36:46Oh, okay.
  1142. 36:47Um I know his dad's was a professor at
  1143. 36:49San Diego State. I don't know if he
  1144. 36:51still is. Mhm. Um
1145. 36:53I don't know what happened to his
1146. 36:55sister, don't know what happened to his
  1147. 36:56brother.
  1148. 36:57Um
  1149. 36:59You know, I'm sure his dad's probably
  1150. 37:00retired by now.
  1151. 37:02He was I think older
1152. 37:03um even back then. Right. Um
  1153. 37:07and I I can't even tell you the last
1154. 37:10time I had any contact with any of them.
1155. 37:11It's been so long. Did he tell you what
1156. 37:13happened? Like what he heard from the
1157. 37:15detectives or the police or
1158. 37:18You know what? He may have
  1159. 37:21um
  1160. 37:22For some reason I'm thinking that
1161. 37:26I mean again, this is like
  1162. 37:32drugs or something. I mean I think I
  1163. 37:35faintly remember him
  1164. 37:37mentioning something maybe about
  1165. 37:38cocaine.
  1166. 37:40Um
1167. 37:41That she was involved with that? You
1168. 37:43know, I don't know that he said she was
1169. 37:45involved or they thought she was I You
  1170. 37:47know, again, it's been so long. I you
1171. 37:49know, he could have mentioned he could
1172. 37:51have told me the whole story of what
  1173. 37:52happened and I mean like I said, I
1174. 37:55faintly remember even between him or the
  1175. 37:57flyer
  1176. 37:58um
1177. 37:59that there was some kind of a burglary.
  1178. 38:02Um
  1179. 38:04You know,
1180. 38:05Let me ask you, did the detectives ever
1181. 38:07reach out to you? Ever No, no one's ever
  1182. 38:09talked to me. I don't think anybody ever
1183. 38:11talked to me about about him. Um It
1184. 38:13seems like back then you were
  1185. 38:14well, I I take
  1186. 38:18I'm thinking that I did talk to a
  1187. 38:20detective.
  1188. 38:22Um
  1189. 38:23God.
1190. 38:25Well, what division was it?
  1191. 38:28In Van Nuys?
  1192. 38:29Hm.
  1193. 38:31And where was I working?
  1194. 38:34Um
  1195. 38:351986?
1196. 38:36I would have been working Devonshire.
  1197. 38:41You know, I'm thinking that I did speak
1198. 38:42to somebody. Oh, really? Okay.
1199. 38:44I couldn't tell you who it was.
  1200. 38:46Cuz it doesn't it doesn't say anything
  1201. 38:48about
  1202. 38:48the phone. Okay.
  1203. 38:49Um
1204. 38:51Could have been somebody in regards to
  1205. 38:53this or just
  1206. 38:54Yeah. Uh-huh. Yeah. Um
1207. 38:57I don't even know if you said a name if
1208. 38:58I would remember it. Because I worked
1209. 39:00Van Nuys for a while. Oh, you did?
  1210. 39:03Yeah, I worked um Detectives patrol?
  1211. 39:05No, we're detectives.
  1212. 39:06Uh-huh. Um
1213. 39:08When did I go to Van Nuys?
  1214. 39:11I worked Devonshire till '88, then I
  1215. 39:14went to Dare till '92.
1216. 39:17I worked twice at Van Nuys.
  1217. 39:20Um Both as a detective? Yeah.
  1218. 39:26Sometime in the '90s. Uh-huh. Um
  1219. 39:32Yeah, I'm
1220. 39:34I know before I busted my leg up, I was
1221. 39:36there in '98 cuz that year sticks out
  1222. 39:38because I had a really bad leg injury.
  1223. 39:41Um
1224. 39:43and I was there prior to that, but I
1225. 39:44couldn't tell you what year. It was just
  1226. 39:46a few years. I made detective, I think,
  1227. 39:48in '93.
  1228. 39:51'93.
  1229. 39:53So, um
1230. 39:55I was at Van Nuys
  1231. 39:57and then I went back and then I had a
1232. 39:58leg injury and then they transferred me
  1233. 39:59to Devonshire cuz I couldn't drive.
  1234. 40:01Uh-huh.
1235. 40:02I couldn't drive very far with the my
  1236. 40:04bad leg injury.
  1237. 40:05So, um
  1238. 40:07But yeah, I I I think I talked to
  1239. 40:09somebody.
  1240. 40:10Um
1241. 40:11Remember anything? Would you remember
1242. 40:13any of the conversation as far as what
1243. 40:15they were looking for or
1244. 40:18Couldn't say. I mean, they may have told
1245. 40:20me I said, "Hey, you know, I went to
  1246. 40:22school with him."
1247. 40:23Um I either they either somebody called
1248. 40:25me or I saw the fly I may have seen the
1249. 40:27flyer at that point and I called up if
1250. 40:30if someone's name was on the flyer I may
1251. 40:31have called to speak to them. I said,
  1252. 40:33"Hey, if there's anything I can do, you
1253. 40:35know, um call me. This is where I work."
1254. 40:39You know, I went to uh you know, uh
  1255. 40:41school with him. Um
  1256. 40:45Couldn't say. I couldn't tell you who it
  1257. 40:47was.
1258. 40:49But you do remember that that someone
1259. 40:50you think reached out to you?
  1260. 40:53You mean a detective?
1261. 40:54Yeah. Called you up and talked to you.
1262. 40:56Or I called them. One of the two. But
  1263. 40:58yeah, I
  1264. 41:00you know, I I remember talking to
  1265. 41:01somebody, but
  1266. 41:04I'm thinking it was a man.
1267. 41:06I'm sure there's probably more men back
  1268. 41:07then. Right.
  1269. 41:10Um
  1270. 41:11So, again, that's
  1271. 41:14I mean, that's not really all I can
  1272. 41:16remember about that. Yeah.
1273. 41:19Let me get back uh to
1274. 41:21as far as when you said that uh
1275. 41:24John was calling you to to see you. And
1276. 41:27during that time you felt that he was
  1277. 41:29was
1278. 41:29felt he was either seeing her was
1279. 41:31engaged or married. Did Did you know?
  1280. 41:33Couldn't say. I don't
  1281. 41:34remember? I you know, I don't know.
  1282. 41:36Uh-huh. Um I
  1283. 41:38Whatever it is
1284. 41:38Well, let's see. My husband Did it ever
  1285. 41:40appear to
1286. 41:41Well, no. No, that would have been
  1287. 41:43Scott moved in in '93.
1288. 41:45So, that would have been you said '86 or
  1289. 41:47'85 or something.
  1290. 41:48Scott's your only husband. You've never
  1291. 41:49been married.
1292. 41:50Yeah. No. Never been married. I got
  1293. 41:51married in I think '96. Well, no. I know
1294. 41:54I got married in '96. But he moved in in
  1295. 41:56'93. Uh-huh.
  1296. 41:58But uh
1297. 42:00during that time that you were seeing
  1298. 42:01John,
  1299. 42:02uh
1300. 42:03you know, was he acting kind of you
1301. 42:04know, kind of squirrely or kind of
1302. 42:05sneaking around when he'd hook up with
1303. 42:07you or anything like that
1304. 42:09to make you think, "Hey, you know, yeah,
  1305. 42:11this guy
  1306. 42:11He he probably was. I mean
1307. 42:14I mean, cuz I from the impression I get
  1308. 42:15is you've known him a long time. Well,
1309. 42:17let's see. From what early
  1310. 42:18I met him in '78. No, I I met him in
  1311. 42:21school I started UCLA in '78.
1312. 42:24Um So, you know him well.
1313. 42:27During that period of time. Yeah, I
1314. 42:29mean, was he acting squirrely?
  1315. 42:32You know,
1316. 42:33I don't even remember where he was
  1317. 42:34living then. You know, I
  1318. 42:38Well, after
  1319. 42:38I don't
1320. 42:39Well, let me ask you after he hooked up
1321. 42:41with uh I mean, if he was living on
1322. 42:42Roscoe or wherever else he was living.
1323. 42:44Right. Well, after he hooked up with uh
  1324. 42:47with Sherry,
1325. 42:48do you know uh where they were living?
1326. 42:51No, you asked me that already. Uh-huh.
1327. 42:53And I said, "Well, obviously you were
1328. 42:54living in Van Nuys division." Yeah.
  1329. 42:57Um
1330. 42:59I may have known. Mhm. I mean, I you
1331. 43:01know, again, I you know, did he ever
  1332. 43:03give me the address?
  1333. 43:05I maybe.
  1334. 43:07You know, I don't remember. I mean, I
  1335. 43:08don't know.
1336. 43:11Cuz the only reason I'm asking you again
  1337. 43:12is cuz as we've been talking, I know
1338. 43:14some stuff has come to you cuz you're
1339. 43:15like, "Oh, see you see you You know, So,
  1340. 43:18that's why I'm asking if you've ever
  1341. 43:19been to the house.
1342. 43:20you said Van Nuys division,
  1343. 43:23you know, I'm just
1344. 43:29I'm sure he could have told me. I mean,
1345. 43:30he could have told me. He could have
1346. 43:31told me where he lived. Um
1347. 43:36Do you ever gone there?
  1348. 43:38I don't think I've ever gone there.
  1349. 43:40That's what I'm saying. I don't
1350. 43:42I don't want to say no, I've never gone
1351. 43:43there and then you say, "Oh, I was at a
  1352. 43:45party." Uh cuz I I I don't you know, I
1353. 43:48don't think so. Yeah. Um like I said,
1354. 43:51we've got these friends. We have
  1355. 43:52different we have parties.
  1356. 43:54Um
  1357. 43:55my house, their house.
1358. 43:58I I just don't think John ever came to
  1359. 44:00any
1360. 44:01Again, you know, at what point because
1361. 44:04we we knew people from school together.
1362. 44:07I knew different people, he knew
1363. 44:08different people. I knew people that he
1364. 44:10knew from his work, um
1365. 44:13you know, that lived in the valley,
  1366. 44:15um
  1367. 44:17you know.
1368. 44:19So, as far as for social events or
  1369. 44:20anything, I mean, it's
1370. 44:23I mean, you're not sure if you ever been
  1371. 44:24to the house cuz
1372. 44:30But, it's safe to say that would have
1373. 44:31been the only time, like for something
  1374. 44:33social.
1375. 44:35Yeah, if I went there for something
  1376. 44:36social, yeah. I mean
1377. 44:38Because I know you you went to talk to
  1378. 44:40her
  1379. 44:41at the hospital
1380. 44:43uh regarding this issue with John.
1381. 44:46So, you know, kind of like they you
1382. 44:47know, what's going to happen here with
  1383. 44:48this thing.
1384. 44:50But, would this ever have followed up to
1385. 44:51her house when you went to talk to her
1386. 44:53to say, "Hey, you know what?"
  1387. 44:54I
1388. 44:55I don't even know that I knew where they
  1389. 44:56lived. I You know, that's what I'm
  1390. 44:58saying. I don't If I knew where they
1391. 45:00lived and I'd been there, if it was for
  1392. 45:02something social
  1393. 45:04I I would I'm I'm
  1394. 45:06And I can't see how many times I I saw
  1395. 45:07her face-to-face.
1396. 45:09You know, he lived on Roscoe. Did I ever
  1397. 45:10see her there? I don't know. I mean, I
1398. 45:14may have seen her at his apartment on
  1399. 45:15Roscoe. Mhm.
1400. 45:17I may have met her there.
  1401. 45:19You know, I I mean
1402. 45:22But, you didn't have any issues with
  1403. 45:23her, right?
1404. 45:24No, I mean, you know, obviously, if he
1405. 45:27was dating me and dating her, I probably
1406. 45:29said, "Hey, pick." or something, you
1407. 45:30know, you know, back then.
  1408. 45:33Um
1409. 45:35I can't say that we ever screamed or
  1410. 45:37yeah, you know, it's I mean, he was a
  1411. 45:39pretty mellow guy.
  1412. 45:41You know, um
  1413. 45:43I think I was pretty mellow. I I don't I
1414. 45:45don't think we had some big huge blow-up
  1415. 45:47to say
1416. 45:48you know, why we stopped dating or you
  1417. 45:50know,
1418. 45:51and I even think that when I was dating
  1419. 45:53him, I was probably Like I said, I was
1420. 45:55probably going out with other guys and
1421. 45:56he was probably going out with other
  1422. 45:58girls. You know, I don't know.
1423. 46:00I mean, would you remember if she
1424. 46:02snapped on you and just like, "Hey man,
1425. 46:04it's my man, you know, you get it leave
1426. 46:06him alone, you know, blah blah blah."
  1427. 46:07That kind of stuff?
  1428. 46:08You know,
1429. 46:11And would you remember an incident like
1430. 46:12that? I mean, cuz that would be like,
1431. 46:13"What?" Well, you know, and maybe that
  1432. 46:15happened. I mean,
  1433. 46:18gosh, I you know,
1434. 46:20it's been so long ago. I you know, I
  1435. 46:22just I mean, that's not ringing a bell.
1436. 46:26Mhm. Um I mean, cuz the times I've seen
1437. 46:28you around at our office I'm crazy.
1438. 46:31But you're always kind of like real
1439. 46:33I mean, you seem kind of bubbly. Oh, I'm
1440. 46:35I'm you know, people think I'm really
  1441. 46:37hyper. Um but I can I mean, I can get
1442. 46:40I can get upset. You know, and and I
  1443. 46:42mean, I forget 5 seconds later. You
1444. 46:44know, you know how guys rage and you go
  1445. 46:47Ah, you know, um
1446. 46:49I mean, I've done that in the office,
1447. 46:50you know, but it's like and then I'm you
  1448. 46:53know, and then I'm
1449. 46:54you know, uh you know, I I mean, people
  1450. 46:57think
  1451. 46:57the bridge. Yeah, I mean, it's like
1452. 46:58people think I'm crazy and then they
  1453. 47:00think I'm crazy at home and I'm you
  1454. 47:02know, more I'm I'm a hyper person at
  1455. 47:04work. I'm you know, I I
1456. 47:06enjoy my job. I get excited. I you know,
  1457. 47:08um
  1458. 47:09I I enjoy the job. I've always enjoyed
1459. 47:12the job. Um Well, you got a good gig,
  1460. 47:14so.
  1461. 47:15You know,
  1462. 47:16um so you know, I
  1463. 47:19I you know, I don't know. It's like I
1464. 47:21said, this stuff's been so long ago. Um
1465. 47:23you know, I'm sure as soon as I walk out
  1466. 47:25here, I'll go, "Oh, shoot. I did 25
  1467. 47:28things I'll remember."
1468. 47:29Um you know, But you'll call us or I
1469. 47:31mean, you'll just come over our desk and
  1470. 47:32tell us.
1471. 47:33I don't know what else you need to know.
1472. 47:35Like I said, you know, we we knew
  1473. 47:36friends together.
1474. 47:38A lot of the friends that you know, that
1475. 47:40we socialized in the dorms, I would say,
1476. 47:43I mean, there was a group of us that
1477. 47:46um we were all really close. I I mean,
1478. 47:48even this one guy I was thinking of, you
1479. 47:50know, um Diana Basta. We were all really
  1480. 47:53close. I haven't talked to her in a
1481. 47:55million years. Um Diana Basta being a
  1482. 47:57friend of you and John's or
1483. 47:59Yeah, we all lived on the dorms on the
  1484. 48:01dorms together. I don't know if she
1485. 48:02lived on the same we I'm trying to think
1486. 48:04I think I know John lived on our floor
1487. 48:07because his roommate was Dave Newman.
1488. 48:09Dave Newman now is a big huge big shot
  1489. 48:12whatever.
  1490. 48:13Movie producer, director, something. I
1491. 48:15don't know. Um And he was John's
1492. 48:17roommate? Yeah. And then the guys who
  1493. 48:19lived across from me
1494. 48:21um Jim Jascul and Roy
1495. 48:25Saccaboo, Saccaboo, something like that.
1496. 48:27Um they lived across from me. Um Diana
  1497. 48:30Basta
1498. 48:33I don't know if she lived on our floor.
1499. 48:34Maybe she was the RA.
  1500. 48:37Um
  1501. 48:38Diane Sherman
1502. 48:40um cuz I still remain friends with Diane
  1503. 48:42Sherman.
1504. 48:43Um not that I'm not friends with the
  1505. 48:44other people. I just don't see them.
  1506. 48:46Um
  1507. 48:48a gal named Smita
  1508. 48:50um Sally
1509. 48:54Kathleen. You know, so we we were all on
1510. 48:57the floor. I mean, some of them were
  1511. 48:59athletes, some of them weren't. You
1512. 49:01know, I said John played basketball, his
  1513. 49:02brother played basketball, I played
  1514. 49:03basketball at UCLA for 2 years.
  1515. 49:05Um
1516. 49:06one of the girls swam on the team, one
1517. 49:08was on the crew team. So, we all did
1518. 49:09stuff together. Um and then I'd say
1519. 49:12after we all graduated, um we went to
1520. 49:14weddings, you know, I went to weddings.
  1521. 49:16Um
  1522. 49:17uh
1523. 49:19But Sherry wasn't part of this circle.
1524. 49:22No, I don't even know how he how he met
  1525. 49:24her. I don't even know where I mean, I
1526. 49:25don't know where he met her from. I
1527. 49:26don't even know He told me where he met
1528. 49:28her from. I mean, he may have told me. I
  1529. 49:30You know, that's not ringing a bell.
  1530. 49:33Um
1531. 49:35And there was lots I mean, you know,
  1532. 49:36there's just
1533. 49:38There was other people that knew other
  1534. 49:39people,
  1535. 49:40um
1536. 49:40you know, that were friends of
  1537. 49:42everybody's.
  1538. 49:43Um
  1539. 49:45You know.
  1540. 49:47Um I mean, I don't know what else to
1541. 49:49tell you. Well, one of the concerns I
1542. 49:50have as we're looking at some of the
  1543. 49:51notes is uh
  1544. 49:53some of Sherry's friends said that
1545. 49:56you and her were having a problem
1546. 49:59because of the John situation.
  1547. 50:02That's
  1548. 50:04Well,
  1549. 50:05I number one, I don't know who her
  1550. 50:06friends are.
  1551. 50:08Um cuz again, I don't I don't recall if
1552. 50:11he did tell me where he met her.
  1553. 50:14I don't even who these friends are. A
  1554. 50:16problem?
1555. 50:17I guess that if I spoke to her
1556. 50:20I mean, I'll go out as far as a limb and
1557. 50:22I don't even want to say I spoke to her
1558. 50:23five times cuz that's probably not even
  1559. 50:25true. I I I can't even remember. Um
1560. 50:29again, did I meet him at her place when
1561. 50:31he you know, he lived on Roscoe for I
  1562. 50:32think
  1563. 50:33uh quite a while, but I couldn't tell
1564. 50:35you how long he lived on Roscoe. And the
1565. 50:37only reason why I remember the place now
  1566. 50:38is because it's like a huge dope dope
1567. 50:40place now where they, you know, it may
1568. 50:42have been back then, but you know, maybe
  1569. 50:45we didn't know back then.
1570. 50:47I could have met her there. I could
  1571. 50:48have, you know,
  1572. 50:50I I
  1573. 50:51I don't think so.
  1574. 50:52You know, I don't even know that I met
  1575. 50:55any of their friends.
  1576. 50:56I I I You know, I don't I I I can't say
  1577. 50:59that. I don't know that that's a true
  1578. 51:00statement. Well, that's what I'm reading
  1579. 51:02is that
1580. 51:03you guys have problems with each other
1581. 51:05and words are being exchanged and it's
  1582. 51:06all relating to John.
  1583. 51:10You know what? I I I I I just I can't
  1584. 51:13say. You can't say it? No, I that
  1585. 51:16doesn't even ring a bell. I mean, I
1586. 51:17mean, it seemed like yeah, you would
  1587. 51:19recall something if I would I would
  1588. 51:21think.
  1589. 51:22I would think. I mean, I would think.
  1590. 51:25I would think.
  1591. 51:25Yeah. Because it's But that I, you know,
1592. 51:29And it seems like your relationship with
  1593. 51:30John was
  1594. 51:32kind of
  1595. 51:34I mean, you've known each other for a
1596. 51:35lot of years. Yeah, it was just kind of
  1597. 51:37it was like
1598. 51:40But it doesn't seem to me from what
1599. 51:41you're telling me that I mean, we were
  1600. 51:42never engaged. I mean, it wasn't like we
1601. 51:44were planning to get married. Um
1602. 51:46you know, it was like it it was all I
1603. 51:51I don't know how to describe it. I mean
  1604. 51:53Would you say there wasn't a lot of
  1605. 51:54drama in this relationship?
1606. 51:56I don't think there was drama. Okay.
  1607. 51:58Yeah, I mean That's why I'm asking as
1608. 52:00far as what the friends are saying in
  1609. 52:01regards to
  1610. 52:03this, you know, the problems they're
1611. 52:05saying you were having with with Sherry.
1612. 52:08I mean, it seems like the relationship
1613. 52:09is just going on an even plane.
  1614. 52:11That just does I I that I that I don't
1615. 52:13have that recollection of that at all.
1616. 52:14No? No. And cuz from what you're telling
1617. 52:17me is when you guys met at the hospital
  1618. 52:20uh,
1619. 52:20I mean, you guys talked, but it wasn't
1620. 52:23from what you recall confrontational
  1621. 52:25from either side?
  1622. 52:27I I mean
1623. 52:28I'm trying to, you know, turn my memory
  1624. 52:30back, you know,
  1625. 52:32and I'm try I can't even I can't even
  1626. 52:34picture the
1627. 52:35you know, picture the the conversation.
  1628. 52:37I mean, I can't even picture the
  1629. 52:38conversation.
1630. 52:39Well, let me ask you. I mean, at the
1631. 52:40hospital it it never got to the point
1632. 52:41where people are going, "Hey, hey, you
  1633. 52:42know,
1634. 52:43go to everybody go to your own corner"
  1635. 52:45type of thing? I don't think so.
  1636. 52:47Nothing like that?
  1637. 52:48think so. I mean, I really don't. I
1638. 52:49mean, if you if you know, if you say
  1639. 52:51people said that
1640. 52:53that's not ringing a bell to me at all.
  1641. 52:54I mean, it's not. I mean, that that's
  1642. 52:56not ringing a bell Was there
1643. 52:58Was there ever a time when you and
1644. 52:59Sherry were talking and John had to
1645. 53:01maybe go like, "Hey, you guys
1646. 53:02relax, you know" or anything like that?
  1647. 53:05I don't think so.
1648. 53:07About, you know, ever going to her house
  1649. 53:09and having a dispute like that?
  1650. 53:12You know,
  1651. 53:14I'm just
1652. 53:16if I met her ever at his apartment,
1653. 53:18maybe. I mean, maybe we could have met
1654. 53:19at I could have met her at apartment.
1655. 53:23go like, "Hey, you guys
1656. 53:24See, you know, if you say people said
  1657. 53:26that
1658. 53:27that's not ringing a bell to me at all.
  1659. 53:28I mean, it's not. I mean, that that's
  1660. 53:30not ringing a bell Was there
1661. 53:32Was there ever a time when you and
1662. 53:33Sherry were talking and John had to
1663. 53:35maybe go like, "Hey, you guys
1664. 53:37relax, you know" or anything like that?
  1665. 53:40I don't think so.
1666. 53:42About, you know, ever going to her house
  1667. 53:44and having a dispute like that.
  1668. 53:47You know,
  1669. 53:48I'm just
1670. 53:50If I met her ever at his apartment,
1671. 53:52maybe. I mean, maybe we could have met
1672. 53:54at I could have met her at apartment.
  1673. 53:56I'm thinking that
1674. 53:58the hospital thing, that sounds familiar
  1675. 54:01that I I met her there.
  1676. 54:05I just can't say that I've ever
1677. 54:06Again, was I there with other people?
  1678. 54:09I don't I I
  1679. 54:11I don't know. Um I don't think I ever
1680. 54:14met her there or him there.
  1681. 54:16Um
1682. 54:17I mean, either one or the other.
  1683. 54:19I don't think so. I I just I can't
  1684. 54:23I don't think so. Cuz I mean, I know the
  1685. 54:25way my wife is
1686. 54:26at our house, she wouldn't want my own
  1687. 54:28girlfriends there, you know? So, I don't
1688. 54:30know if maybe she had the same mentality
1689. 54:32towards you if as far as you ever being
1690. 54:35being welcome there, you know? Cuz it's
1691. 54:37You know what? If somebody said I was
1692. 54:39there when they were there, then that's
  1693. 54:41possible, but I just I
  1694. 54:43I don't recall. I mean, I don't think
  1695. 54:45so. I don't
  1696. 54:46It's not sounding familiar.
  1697. 54:49Yeah, cuz I guess basically what I'm
1698. 54:50asking is, you know, were you ever
1699. 54:51welcome to the house like, you know,
1700. 54:52"Hey, Oh, come over?" Yeah, come on
  1701. 54:54over. I'm having a barbecue, you know.
1702. 54:58A dinner party, Christmas party, or
  1703. 54:59whatever.
  1704. 55:01I don't know. You don't know? I'm just
  1705. 55:02trying to think.
1706. 55:06You know, like I said, because there
1707. 55:07were so many of us that
  1708. 55:09the the two Dianes,
1709. 55:11um Jim Jasculca, Roy, um Smeeda, the gal
1710. 55:15Smeeda, another friend of ours, Beth. I
1711. 55:18She uh pa- It seems like everybody I
1712. 55:20know pass- passing away. Um she passed
1713. 55:23away. She was a child diabetic and and
  1714. 55:25got very ill.
  1715. 55:27Um
1716. 55:27we would all socialize. Um
  1717. 55:29like I said, I don't think John ever s-
1718. 55:32It's hard I don't want to say he never
  1719. 55:33socialized with us.
  1720. 55:35Um
  1721. 55:38I you know, it it's been I I'd have to
1722. 55:39go almost go back and look at pictures
  1723. 55:41because I take pictures. I mean I
  1724. 55:43usually when I have I go to functions,
  1725. 55:45I've 10,000 pictures, okay? I'm a
  1726. 55:48picture nut. Mhm.
1727. 55:51Let me ask, when you were seeing John,
  1728. 55:52would you
1729. 55:54I take it he would pick you up in his
1730. 55:55car, you're going in her you know, your
1731. 55:57car, things of that nature?
1732. 55:59When you guys would go out?
  1733. 56:01Well, yeah, I mean
1734. 56:02Do you remember what he what he drove?
1735. 56:06Well, I know at one time he drove either
  1736. 56:08a 240 or 260Z.
1737. 56:12Any other cars that stand out in your
  1738. 56:13mind?
  1739. 56:14Mhm.
1740. 56:25I don't know how long he drove that 240
1741. 56:27or 260Z for. Um and the only reason I
  1742. 56:30say that is cuz I think
1743. 56:33I may have a picture of it um
1744. 56:35with him in it. Um
1745. 56:38What kind of car did you have back then?
  1746. 56:41Let's see.
  1747. 56:43What year?
1748. 56:44Or are you like one of those young cops
  1749. 56:45that like, "Oh, I got a paycheck and
  1750. 56:46bought a new car?"
  1751. 56:47no, I I've only had like a few cars in
1752. 56:50my whole life. So, what you have when
1753. 56:51you came on the job?
  1754. 56:56Well, my first car was a '68 Chevelle.
  1755. 57:00Mhm, '68 Chevelle.
  1756. 57:04And then I had
  1757. 57:06a Toyota
  1758. 57:12Mhm.
1759. 57:13Some kind of a Toyota. Mhm. Um
1760. 57:17hatchback, but I forget what the name of
  1761. 57:18it was.
  1762. 57:20Um Like a Corolla or Tercel
  1763. 57:22Tercel. Something like that.
1764. 57:24Tercel. Yeah. And then I had my truck.
1765. 57:27Did you ever have any problems with your
  1766. 57:28cars?
  1767. 57:32Like what?
1768. 57:33Just anything in general, car wrecks,
  1769. 57:35anything stolen.
1770. 57:36Yeah. No, my car's never been stolen.
  1771. 57:39Oh,
  1772. 57:39no, crashed,
  1773. 57:41hit and run,
  1774. 57:43um
  1775. 57:46uh
1776. 57:48hit I mean, my Tercel was hit and run.
1777. 57:50Again, I got I got pictures of the hit
  1778. 57:51and runs, um
1779. 57:53and I don't think any of my cars had
  1780. 57:54ever been stolen. No.
  1781. 57:57My cars haven't been stolen.
  1782. 58:00Broken into,
1783. 58:02um None of that, huh?
1784. 58:04Oh, yeah, they My car's has been broken
  1785. 58:06into,
  1786. 58:07um
  1787. 58:10you know,
1788. 58:11but no cars have ever been stolen. Mhm.
1789. 58:16How long Well, when Tell me about this
1790. 58:18uh car getting broken into.
1791. 58:21Well, my car's been broken into several
  1792. 58:22times. Oh, really?
1793. 58:25You ever lose anything or
  1794. 58:27Yeah.
1795. 58:29Now that you mention it,
  1796. 58:30let's see.
1797. 58:33I had a gun that was stolen. Mhm.
1798. 58:36Uh I had other stuff that was stolen.
1799. 58:38Not your duty gun, was it?
  1800. 58:40No. Oh, that's good.
1801. 58:42Um Was it ever recovered?
  1802. 58:44I don't know. No, I don't think so. Not
  1803. 58:47that I know of.
  1804. 58:47Never been notified? No. Car's been
  1805. 58:49broken into
1806. 58:51Yeah, several times. Where did that
1807. 58:53happen when your gun was taken?
  1808. 59:01Trying to remember.
1809. 59:04I'm sure you guys must know.
  1810. 59:06Um
1811. 59:09cuz my car was broken into in Ventura,
1812. 59:15I think in Santa Monica. I have
1813. 59:16relatives that live in Santa Monica and
  1814. 59:18Venice.
1815. 59:19Um Who lives there? My uncle. Well, I
  1816. 59:22had I had several uncles.
  1817. 59:24Um Mhm.
1818. 59:27Yeah, could have been Santa Monica.
  1819. 59:30Um Venice.
1820. 59:32My my car's been broken into in Ventura
  1821. 59:34before.
  1822. 59:35So.
1823. 59:37Is your mom still around or? Mhm. Yeah.
  1824. 59:40Your dad?
  1825. 59:41Yeah, but I don't really have that much
1826. 59:43of a relationship with my dad. Oh.
  1827. 59:46So.
1828. 59:47I couldn't tell you where he lives if
1829. 59:49you're you want to know. Oh, really?
  1830. 59:51No. Mhm.
  1831. 59:52Yeah, couldn't tell you.
  1832. 59:55Well, uh
1833. 59:56Like I said, as we were looking at the
1834. 59:58case and you know, we had read the notes
1835. 1:00:00as far as from uh
  1836. 1:00:03Sherry's friend saying
1837. 1:00:05you you guys had problems or words and
  1838. 1:00:07they got heated.
1839. 1:00:09You know, and the reason we're asking
1840. 1:00:10you is they had mentioned that an
1841. 1:00:12incident at her work had occurred.
1842. 1:00:15And they've also told us that an
1843. 1:00:16incident at her house occurred.
1844. 1:00:21You know what? And this is at her house
1845. 1:00:23during the period of time that they're
  1846. 1:00:24married.
  1847. 1:00:26Mhm.
1848. 1:00:27That's just not sounding familiar at
  1849. 1:00:29all. I mean, I you know what? I
  1850. 1:00:33That's just not sound I I I
1851. 1:00:34Again, if someone says that I was at her
1852. 1:00:36house and I had an incident with her
  1853. 1:00:40I I you know, I that just doesn't sound
  1854. 1:00:42I I I
1855. 1:00:43You know, was John there? Did John say
1856. 1:00:45this happened because and other people
  1857. 1:00:47were there? I I
  1858. 1:00:48I just I don't recall. I mean, it just
1859. 1:00:50doesn't sound you know, familiar. And
1860. 1:00:53this is an incident where you showed up.
  1861. 1:00:56You weren't supposed to show up.
  1862. 1:00:58And
  1863. 1:01:00things got heated.
  1864. 1:01:01At his house? Yes.
  1865. 1:01:05It I you know, I that just doesn't sound
  1866. 1:01:08familiar. I mean
  1867. 1:01:09Nothing? No.
1868. 1:01:10I you know, it's not sounding familiar.
1869. 1:01:13So Not at all. Now you're saying not
  1870. 1:01:14familiar cuz it's just you don't you
1871. 1:01:16remember or is it just
  1872. 1:01:17you know what? I would have then I'd
  1873. 1:01:19have to say I don't remember cuz I don't
  1874. 1:01:21remember. I need that doesn't sound
  1875. 1:01:22familiar. I
1876. 1:01:24I mean, would you remember something
1877. 1:01:25like that in your life if Well, I would
  1878. 1:01:27think, but
  1879. 1:01:28drama involving, you know,
1880. 1:01:30the other woman type of thing? Sure. Did
1881. 1:01:32you ever fight with her?
1882. 1:01:34You mean like we fought?
1883. 1:01:34Yeah. Did you ever duke it out with her?
  1884. 1:01:37No, I don't think so. I mean You'd
1885. 1:01:39remember that, right? That would be
  1886. 1:01:40pretty
  1887. 1:01:41Yeah, I would think so. I mean
1888. 1:01:43Pretty specific, you know. Yeah, like I
  1889. 1:01:45said, I mean obviously
  1890. 1:01:48I
  1891. 1:01:48you know, I mean
  1892. 1:01:50it just doesn't sound familiar.
1893. 1:01:52I mean I mean what are they saying? So I
  1894. 1:01:54I I fought with her, so so now I mean I
  1895. 1:01:56I I I I'm
1896. 1:01:58get getting the jump or the leap.
  1897. 1:02:01Excuse me, I haven't eaten. Um
  1898. 1:02:03they're saying, "Okay, I fought with
1899. 1:02:04her, so I must have killed her."
  1900. 1:02:06I mean, come on. I mean, that's
  1901. 1:02:08you know,
1902. 1:02:10I don't even know who these people are.
  1903. 1:02:12I I can't even say I met any of these
  1904. 1:02:13people. I mean, that's it's insane.
  1905. 1:02:16I I
  1906. 1:02:17If it happened, I honestly don't
  1907. 1:02:19remember it.
  1908. 1:02:20That's all I can tell you. I mean
  1909. 1:02:22I mean, both
  1910. 1:02:23I don't know if you know
1911. 1:02:25would be something you would remember. I
  1912. 1:02:26mean, cuz it's I don't know if any other
1913. 1:02:29intense incidents in your life that have
  1914. 1:02:31occurred. I mean, you'd recall those,
  1915. 1:02:32right? I mean Well,
1916. 1:02:34like a use of force at work or car
  1917. 1:02:37crash, something you're involved in.
1918. 1:02:38You'd be like, "Yeah, I remember that."
  1919. 1:02:39think I would remember. I mean, I would
1920. 1:02:41think if it was something that crazy, I
  1921. 1:02:43mean I I I can't say I you say, "How
1922. 1:02:45many fights have you gotten into, you
  1923. 1:02:46know, in your life?"
  1924. 1:02:49You know, I mean, a few at work.
1925. 1:02:51Well, fights at work are kind of
1926. 1:02:52different cuz we've all had uses of
  1927. 1:02:54force or whatever, but I mean Well, I
1928. 1:02:55haven't even had even a lot of those.
  1929. 1:02:56Right, but if you're if you're actually,
  1930. 1:02:59you know, I mean, I played
1931. 1:03:00Like if if Dan and I got mad at each
1932. 1:03:01other and we threw blows in the squad
  1933. 1:03:03room, I mean, 20 years later I I would
  1934. 1:03:05remember it. I mean I would think I
  1935. 1:03:06would remember it, but that's that's
  1936. 1:03:08what I'm saying. That's not sounding
1937. 1:03:09familiar to me at all. I mean,
1938. 1:03:12Let me ask you. I mean, throughout your
  1939. 1:03:14life,
1940. 1:03:17you know, would you remember the number
  1941. 1:03:18of fights you've been involved in?
  1942. 1:03:20And I don't mean kind of like a bump or
  1943. 1:03:22something, just a a physical fight where
  1944. 1:03:23you
  1945. 1:03:26everybody's hitting each other,
1946. 1:03:26scratching, pulling, you know, whatever.
  1947. 1:03:29Maybe. I mean, I can't say I've been in
1948. 1:03:31a lot. You know, I played sports. Yeah.
1949. 1:03:34You know, you get into scuffles there
  1950. 1:03:36and
  1951. 1:03:36Mhm.
  1952. 1:03:37Um
1953. 1:03:38And you recall some of those, right? I
  1954. 1:03:39mean, just
1955. 1:03:41Yeah, I can recall some of them.
  1956. 1:03:42Yeah,
1957. 1:03:43yeah, games get intense. But like I
1958. 1:03:44said, this you saying this this is just
  1959. 1:03:46not ringing a bell. I mean, but you
  1960. 1:03:48know,
  1961. 1:03:50I don't know what to tell you. It's it's
  1962. 1:03:51just that's just not ringing a bell to
  1963. 1:03:53me.
  1964. 1:03:54It'd be something I would think I would
  1965. 1:03:56remember. I mean, I'm
  1966. 1:03:58If you're in this
1967. 1:03:59I would think so, too.
  1968. 1:04:00If you're in this other girl's house and
  1969. 1:04:01But
1970. 1:04:02words are exchanged, I mean, you figure
  1971. 1:04:03you'd recall. I would think.
1972. 1:04:06Especially if it got physical, right?
  1973. 1:04:08Well, I would think. And it's relating
  1974. 1:04:10to
1975. 1:04:11you know, a guy that you were dating and
1976. 1:04:13that she's dating now, you know, and
  1977. 1:04:15it's like a whole
1978. 1:04:17love triangle type of thing. I mean, you
  1979. 1:04:18figure you'd remember that, right? Well,
  1980. 1:04:20I would think.
  1981. 1:04:23So.
1982. 1:04:26I mean, I don't know what to tell you.
  1983. 1:04:27Yeah.
  1984. 1:04:28No, cuz I'm I mean, I'm trying to I'm
1985. 1:04:30looking at the notes and these people
  1986. 1:04:32are kind of
1987. 1:04:34I mean, they're pointing the finger at
  1988. 1:04:35you. Well, and
  1989. 1:04:37I mean,
1990. 1:04:39that's not ringing a bell to me, so you
  1991. 1:04:42know, I don't know you know,
  1992. 1:04:44it's
1993. 1:04:46I don't know what to tell you. I mean,
1994. 1:04:47that just sounds crazy to me. Yeah. So,
1995. 1:04:50you offhand, you don't recall ever going
  1996. 1:04:51into her house and
  1997. 1:04:53having words and physically
  1998. 1:04:56you know, No. I mean,
1999. 1:04:57attacking her, her attacking you. No.
  2000. 1:05:00Nothing like that? No. I mean, that's
  2001. 1:05:01no.
  2002. 1:05:03Nothing?
  2003. 1:05:03No.
  2004. 1:05:04No.
  2005. 1:05:05Not at all. Okay.
2006. 1:05:08Well, on some of the
  2007. 1:05:10uh on this case,
2008. 1:05:12you know, this is occurred in '86,
  2009. 1:05:15right? Uh,
2010. 1:05:17detectives processed the scene, things
  2011. 1:05:18of that nature. Uh,
2012. 1:05:21they did fingerprints and all that
2013. 1:05:22stuff. You know, you know the standard
  2014. 1:05:24stuff. I mean, you you've been doing
  2015. 1:05:25this longer than I have.
2016. 1:05:26Uh, Well, not about that.
  2017. 1:05:28I got 26 years on
  2018. 1:05:30going on 26. 19, so.
  2019. 1:05:33But,
2020. 1:05:35you know, as they processed everything,
2021. 1:05:37they did the best they could at that
2022. 1:05:38time and they looked at a lot of a lot
2023. 1:05:40of people and different things in this
  2024. 1:05:41case.
  2025. 1:05:42And you're right.
  2026. 1:05:43if you guys are claiming that I'm a
  2027. 1:05:44suspect, then, you know, I I got a
2028. 1:05:47problem with, you know, with that. Okay.
  2029. 1:05:49Okay. So,
  2030. 1:05:51you know, if you're if you're doing this
  2031. 1:05:53as an interrogation, you're saying,
  2032. 1:05:54"Hey, I'm a suspect." Well, now I got a
  2033. 1:05:56problem with, you know, now you're
  2034. 1:05:58accusing me of this.
  2035. 1:06:00Is that what you're Is that what you're
  2036. 1:06:01saying?
2037. 1:06:02We're trying to figure out what
  2038. 1:06:03happened, Stephanie.
  2039. 1:06:05Uh, well, I'm I was, you know, I'm just
  2040. 1:06:07saying.
  2041. 1:06:08Uh, you know, do I Do I need to get a
2042. 1:06:10lawyer if you're accusing me of this?
2043. 1:06:13you know, You don't have to I mean, you
2044. 1:06:14know, you're here of your own free will.
2045. 1:06:16I mean, No, well, I know, but I mean,
  2046. 1:06:17You know, you're not you're not under
2047. 1:06:18arrest. You can walk out whenever you
2048. 1:06:19You can leave whenever you like. Well,
  2049. 1:06:21you know,
2050. 1:06:22I'm trying to give you some background
2051. 1:06:23of, you know, how I knew him.
2052. 1:06:26And now you're telling me that some
2053. 1:06:27somebody's saying that we had this big
  2054. 1:06:29old fight and I don't even know what
2055. 1:06:31you're talking about. Um, you know, and
2056. 1:06:33I don't want to, you know, get in
  2057. 1:06:34trouble for something that I didn't even
  2058. 1:06:36do or you're saying I did something.
  2059. 1:06:39Okay. Yeah, we understand.
2060. 1:06:41I mean, how would you guys like it if
2061. 1:06:42the tables were turned on you?
  2062. 1:06:44I understand. No, I mean,
  2063. 1:06:45No, that's what we're telling you. I
2064. 1:06:46mean, you're free to go whenever you
2065. 1:06:47want. If If this makes you uncomfortable
2066. 1:06:49and you want to you want to
  2067. 1:06:50now you're starting to make me
  2068. 1:06:51uncomfortable.
2069. 1:06:52The thing is, I mean, detectives did
2070. 1:06:54what they could at that time on the
2071. 1:06:55crime scene. Okay? And the burglary
2072. 1:06:57thing you're talking about, that is an
2073. 1:06:58angle that they looked at. I mean, but
2074. 1:07:01now we're looking at everything else on
2075. 1:07:02the case. Cuz nobody was ever arrested
  2076. 1:07:04on the case. I
  2077. 1:07:06I don't know that or not.
  2078. 1:07:08Okay.
2079. 1:07:09Now, what we'd like to do is
2080. 1:07:12obviously you know about all the DNA
2081. 1:07:13stuff and things of the nature that you
2082. 1:07:15know gets done on cases nowadays.
2083. 1:07:17You know, if we asked you for a a DNA
2084. 1:07:19swab, would you be willing to give us
  2085. 1:07:20one? Maybe.
  2086. 1:07:23Cuz now now now
  2087. 1:07:25Yes, because now
  2088. 1:07:26Now I'm thinking I probably need to talk
  2089. 1:07:28to a lawyer.
  2090. 1:07:29Okay. I mean
2091. 1:07:31What? I cuz I know how this stuff works,
  2092. 1:07:33okay? Don't get me wrong, you're right,
2093. 1:07:34I have been doing this long time. Yeah.
2094. 1:07:36And and I wish I had been recording this
2095. 1:07:37because because now it sounds like, you
  2096. 1:07:40know, there's
  2097. 1:07:42you know, you're selling these people
  2098. 1:07:43saying I'm a fighting with her and now
2099. 1:07:45you sounds like you're trying to, you
  2100. 1:07:46know,
2101. 1:07:47I've been doing this a long time.
  2102. 1:07:48Yeah, we know.
2103. 1:07:49Okay. And and now it almost sounds like
2104. 1:07:51you're trying to pin something on me.
2105. 1:07:52Now I got that sense. Well, where it
2106. 1:07:54gets to on these on these cases and you
2107. 1:07:56know it as well as I do. Our job is to
  2108. 1:07:58identify and eliminate suspects.
2109. 1:07:59I can't believe this. So, if we ask you
  2110. 1:08:01to a point give us a DNA sample
2111. 1:08:04a few bucks swab so we can
  2112. 1:08:07identify or eliminate you.
2113. 1:08:08Would you be willing to do that? Maybe.
  2114. 1:08:11Cuz I know this I I I I That's where
  2115. 1:08:14we're at too. I mean because
2116. 1:08:16right now from looking at the evidence
2117. 1:08:18it's, you know, it's possible we may
2118. 1:08:20have some DNA at the location.
  2119. 1:08:22That's great. And
2120. 1:08:25we're going to do what we can to try to
  2121. 1:08:26put this thing together.
2122. 1:08:28And your name's in the book. These
2123. 1:08:30people are pointing at you for whatever
  2124. 1:08:32reason. I don't know why. That's just
  2125. 1:08:34crazy. I mean that's just that's
  2126. 1:08:36absolutely crazy. And
2127. 1:08:38it would be irresponsible on our part
2128. 1:08:40not to look at it.
2129. 1:08:41I know. Are you guys have to do your job
2130. 1:08:43and I guess I'm going to have to contact
  2131. 1:08:44somebody. So. That's fair.
  2132. 1:08:46I mean
2133. 1:08:47cuz I know how this stuff works. I mean
  2134. 1:08:49I I I I I just can't believe it. That's
2135. 1:08:53I mean we we understand that. I mean if
2136. 1:08:55we were in your position, I mean we
2137. 1:08:56would feel the same way.
  2138. 1:08:58I just can't even believe it.
  2139. 1:09:00I mean it's just
  2140. 1:09:02I mean I'm shocked. I'm really shocked
2141. 1:09:04that somebody would be blank saying that
2142. 1:09:05I did this. I mean, we had a fight and
2143. 1:09:07so I went and killed her. I mean, come
  2144. 1:09:09on. Okay. That's
  2145. 1:09:12Okay.
2146. 1:09:13All right. Well, thanks for giving me
2147. 1:09:14the courtesy of letting me know. Keep
  2148. 1:09:16the recording on.
2149. 1:09:16Thanks for your time. Yeah, thank you.
2150. 1:09:18All right, Stephanie. Take care. All
  2151. 1:09:20right.
  2152. 1:09:48Everybody, thank you.
  2153. 1:09:57crazy.
  2154. 1:10:22I have
  2155. 1:10:23too much to
  2156. 1:11:23This is absolutely crazy. Let's see
  2157. 1:11:25something.
  2158. 1:11:28This is insane.
  2159. 1:11:29Okay.
  2160. 1:11:37Give me 1 second.
  2161. 1:11:42Okay.
2162. 1:11:44Stephanie, you know you have the right
2163. 1:11:45to remain silent. Do you understand?
  2164. 1:11:46Yes.
