1:53and sarah wanted to be present right to

2:53and i've got a few problems with the way
2:55he presented it right

3:25professional you're on a lawyer or an
3:29ex-lawyer
3:30and you kind of want to be objective
3:33right when you're

3:44i didn't like the way
3:47this was read out
3:49let me just um
3:51present this here this is the letter
3:52here in a few hours
3:55sarah boone
3:57is gonna have a hearing in her case
4:00and her attorney
4:02mr padilla
4:04is trying to withdraw from the case
4:07in the motion he filed
4:09to withdraw and for a continuance
4:12he cited irreconcilable
4:15differences with his client
4:19now
4:20mr kadilia
4:22is familiar to those people who have
4:24been following this channel for a while
4:26he was the co-counsel yeah so he's
4:28reading out a letter that sarah boone
4:30has written to the judge because um
4:33there's been a problem with uh her
4:36lawyer and they've parted ways
4:39and she's um
4:43just emphasizing her surprise of this
4:45and she wants to be there at the hearing
4:47that's coming up
4:49but just listen to the sarcasm and the
4:53presentation that he um
4:56portrays of this letter
4:59uh from serbian
5:00also for secretary garcia
5:03in the
5:04first trial regarding the murder
5:06of dan markell he was counsel to mr
5:09zhang sam
5:11zang
5:12they were both attorneys from south
5:13florida
5:14who came up to tallahassee to defend
5:17but back in july
5:19mr klee
5:21and incredibly confusing
5:24matter
5:26i'm writing in regards to the requested
5:28withdrawal
5:30most importantly
5:32of my attorney
5:34mauricio padilla
5:37and he's slash my team
5:40filed on april 18
5:432022
5:45along with a request for continuance
5:49forgive me if this is the wrong approach
5:52in contacting you
5:53directly
5:55but i wanted you to be fully aware
5:58of the magnitude of my shock
6:01and disappointment
6:03in the betrayal of mr padilla as i have
6:07not
6:07in any way
6:09by anyone being provided
6:12any explanation
6:14for the aforementioned withdrawal
6:17etc
6:19i
6:21unfortunately had to learn
6:23of these documents
6:26from
6:26excuse me by
6:28my former husband
6:31when calling to speak with my son
6:35after making a commitment to me
6:38as my attorney
6:41over the past two years and two months
6:44ongoing
6:46to fully and sufficiently represent me
6:49oh it's so hard at all
6:52we were a team
6:55i am completely blindsided nonetheless
6:59in how this was
7:01and is being handled
7:03by a
7:05professional
7:07i do not
7:09understand
7:11with that being said your honor
7:14i am graciously requesting to be
7:17included and present
7:20please
7:21at this hearing on friday april
7:25okay melanie um
7:28that is
7:29not the way to present that right yes
7:32so
7:34he's playing to what he believes as a
7:36gallery right
7:38well i can't follow it because
7:41of the way he even talks like i want to
7:44lose interest i can't handle it you have
7:46to really pay attention i want to know
7:48this information and he reads it like i
7:51can't even listen to it and so it's
7:53easier for me just to pause the screen
7:56and read the letter because
7:58he talks
7:59every word
8:01like
8:02ridiculously long
8:04to take a sentence you know like i can't
8:07i can't pay attention to the actual
8:09story that he's i mean the the latter
8:12i'm trying to listen to i mean
8:14to me her layer is absolutely fine i
8:16mean she's in a horrible position
8:20um
8:21i think
8:24there's just
8:25you can't
8:27you can't project that kind of
8:30exaggerated
8:32tone onto the layer you know she's
8:37i believe
8:39she did not mean to kill him and i think
8:42a lot of people agree with that right um
8:44it was
8:47the trouble is she comes across so
8:49terribly as a horrible person right but
8:51yeah
8:52you cannot um
8:55you have to divide that from
8:59the fact that she
9:01did not mean to kill this guy
9:07we agree or not yeah we agree that she
9:09didn't mean to kill him we uh disagree
9:12on
9:13murder and
9:15manslaughter
9:16but
9:17i think he might change your mind if
9:19if it comes out that she was kicking him
9:22or throwing him down the stairs but
9:25i still do agree that she didn't mean it
9:27it was a
9:28shock to her
9:30that she did that it wasn't intended
9:34yeah um use that word
9:38just like we were talking about there uh
9:39before we came on air is
9:42this whole thing about whether she had
9:44him in the suitcase upstairs and pushing
9:46down the stairs
9:49you know
9:50yeah let's see
9:52hopefully i mean it sounds like i think
9:55she's gonna get this child put off it
9:57didn't happen right i'm pretty sure um
10:01that hearing didn't happen as far as i
10:04haven't been able to find anything on it
10:06so

10:12i don't know i don't think it happened

10:17i do agree and then he's so sarcastic

10:21you want him to be kind of like
10:22professional and like explain to you the
10:25law and
10:27so you can kind of learn something
10:28instead of being told
10:30that this chick is already guilty
10:33and she
10:34hasn't cried yet
10:35that's the impression right it's like um
10:39that's the impression he's given right
10:41this person is
10:42is guilty already
10:45yeah i just don't like that kind of torn
10:47and even that it's going to be a slam
10:49dunk because it might not even be that i
10:52think it's going to be hard for them
10:54to
10:55explain to a jury that that's
10:57second-degree murder and not man's
10:59letter you know
11:00if they go up or yeah
11:02if they go for a second degree then
11:06they're going to lose she will be
11:09found not guilty of second degree
11:11definitely maybe
11:12but i don't know there's pretty wild
11:14over there the people in florida
11:18yeah they love that death penalty and
11:20stuff so
11:23who's our girl

11:59she is uh she's pretty high up right in
12:02law enforcement

12:04she's i think she was she the head of
12:07the
12:08um
12:09art theft department yeah art seth and
12:12ellie that department it was her and
12:14another
12:15detective they were the only ones
12:18who knew there was an art theft
12:21department but i guess in la you know
12:23they got all the rich people and stuff
12:25so
12:26but it was like a real prestigious job
12:30yeah how did she get that high being
12:32crazy
12:34yeah
12:35so this is um like is it 10 15 years
12:38after she um killed the
12:41um
12:45the girl of um
12:49of the guy that
12:51she was obsessed with
12:53um
12:54you mean when they when they do this
12:56when did the calling happen okay so and
12:59this i think was 2009
13:02or eight
13:03and the murder happened
13:06and
13:07on february 24th 1986
13:12so
13:13all right absolutely yeah
13:15so round about what did i say it was
13:172009
13:19i thought it was about like yeah 25
13:20years 26 years
13:23oh 2008 is when they got the saliva and
13:26had it tested
13:28um that's when they found out it was
13:30female dna
13:33and then after that she was arrested on
13:35june 5th so this is june 5th 2009.
13:39yeah so the um
13:41they had presumed that um
13:45the murder of
13:47sherry
13:49was due to a burglary
13:52they'd put a couple of um
13:55full packs of
13:58suspects that were in the area at the
14:00time
14:04and
14:05the case was basically closed i think
14:08they just
14:09couldn't get anywhere on it
14:11and then
14:1220 years later
14:14i think her um sherry's father kept
14:17pushing and pushing i think
14:20yep um
14:22and then they opened up the case again
14:24and uh
14:25the two
14:28detectives that are in this
14:29interrogation
14:32um went out to meet her somewhere random
14:36and they got dna from
14:38like a straw or something she was
14:40drinking right yep she was out with her
14:43daughter
14:44um at a costco
14:47which is just like a warehouse store and
14:50they followed her around they sat
14:53they sat down and got some lunch and
14:55when they left they picked up the the
14:58straw from the cup that she was using
15:01and that's when they got here
15:06sorry adopted a three-year-old daughter
15:08and
15:09that's terrible right
15:11so they kind of know already right that
15:13she's guilty as they sit down here
15:17yeah oh yeah they totally did yeah they
15:19already it was already tested against it
15:21and they
15:23they absolutely knew they were gonna
15:25arrest her at it and we were talking
15:27about how it's
15:28a weird thing they got her into this
15:30place for the interview
15:32um
15:33they had to go through like a lot what
15:35is it like a lockup or whatever so they
15:37can get her gun off of her
15:39and make it all secret lying to her
15:41saying that they're going to talk to her
15:43about a an art case
15:46yeah
15:48right but i don't know just get over
15:50there
15:53and then also that her husband
15:55worked in the same general area she was
15:57also some kind of
16:00you know detective there and so they had
16:02to do all this behind their backs
16:04and keep it real quiet
16:07yeah i don't know that i don't know her
16:09husband was in the same kind of
16:11occupation
16:13yeah it's kind of hard to find stuff
16:14about um
16:16the husband
16:18so i don't know i should have liked to
16:20see to see what kind of detective he was
16:22but just odd
16:26poor guy you know
16:29he thinks he's married to a normal
16:30person
16:34okay let's um let's start this here and
16:38a lot of things happen really quickly
16:41she thinks she's sitting down
16:44about
16:45some weird
16:46like
16:48art theft case
16:51and she suddenly realizes that um
16:56it's not about that

17:55i don't want to bring this up
17:58in your squadron

18:12i don't want to talk about this in the
18:13squadron because i don't know who people
18:14are listening and if we go to my side
18:17everybody's always wondering what
18:18everybody else is doing okay
18:20but uh like we're talking about being
18:22business but we've been assigned a case
18:24that we've been looking at okay it's a
18:25new case and reviewing the case there's
18:28some notes to see
18:30as far as your name being mentioned oh

18:39oh yeah i went to school with them you
18:40did yeah how long did you know him
18:45can you imagine how she feels right now
18:47hearing that name

18:52she knows yeah it's trying to pretend

18:55it's some far memory and she hasn't
18:57thought of this guy forever
19:00i wish i got her face right that's the
19:02biggest bummer the whole thing
19:05just could get that like one thing but
19:08you can still see everything you can
19:09still see like her shoulders start going
19:11crazy and
19:13she's a minute she knows what's up right

19:53john and in there some of the statements
19:55we reviewed uh you know there's notes
19:58and stuff that he knew you and stuff oh

20:02lived in the dorms for
20:04i was in the dorms for two years
20:06um you guys lived in the same dorm
20:08yeah okay yeah
20:10okay were you guys just friends or
20:12anything else or yeah we were we were
20:15good friends yeah was there any
20:17relationship or anything to develop
20:18between you guys yeah i need to be dated
20:22you know um i mean
20:24is it what's this all about well it's
20:26relating to
20:29his wife
20:30okay okay did you know her
20:33not really i mean i knew that he got
20:35married years ago uh-huh did you ever
20:37meet her
20:39god i don't know um
20:41do you know who she was or anything

21:32like say you had
21:35of ex and you knew that their their you
21:38know significant other was murdered
21:41when they bring up oh it's about her
21:43wife the way she says okay she might as
21:45well be saying whatever you know like
21:47she don't care you think that she would
21:50she knows like she says she knows that
21:52she got murdered it doesn't have like
21:53any like oh did you hear was
21:55did you find out anything yeah you know
21:58what i mean something like that she's
21:59just like whatever like it sounds like
22:02so it sounds like she's just saying so
22:04what you're talking about yeah yeah so
22:06this person got murdered yeah yeah and
22:08she don't even care i mean like who
22:10cares
22:12no yeah and being a cop she should have
22:13known right away like that they're going
22:15to be talking about a murder like
22:18so stupid
22:23i mean stephanie here's the situation
22:24it's basically we
22:27you know we knew that this when we saw
22:29this in the in in this chrono that maybe
22:31you know there was some relationship
22:32there that's what the chronos seem to
22:33indicate and we didn't want to come up
22:35to you at your desk and ask those kinds
22:38of questions or do anything you know how
22:39up there people can see what's going on
22:41if you go into an interview room or
22:42people are in there getting supplies so
22:44we wanted to afford you some privacy
22:46some confidentiality to talk about this
22:48because we thought it might be you know
22:50something you know you're married to
22:51someone else obviously and so forth and
22:53that you may not want to you know talk
22:54about these things in that setting where
22:56someone you know we don't want the rumor
22:57mill or gossip or anything that kind of
22:58stuff that's fine i mean so we we did
23:00this just as as a means to try and speak
23:02to you in a confidential place where you
23:04you know
23:05where your business isn't out there for
23:07other people in your division
23:09yeah that's been a million years ago i
23:11mean
23:12you know um
23:15what year is it now 2009 i mean i
23:17graduated in 82 82 yeah um
23:22you know we dated
23:24um i dated other guys i'm sure he dated
23:26other girls um
23:29well let me ask you
23:31roughly how long would you would you say
23:32you guys did oh geez

23:36i couldn't even say i mean
23:39i started school there in 78 i started
23:42ucla set in 1978
23:44i graduated in 82
23:46um i don't even remember what year he
23:49graduated if it was a year or two before
23:52me okay um i think he was a little bit
23:54older than i was
23:55i mean you know i can't remember if he
23:56was born let's say i'm born in 60 1960 i
24:00don't know if he was born in 58 or 59 i
24:02mean i you know i mean i knew his
24:04parents i knew his sister his brother
24:06went to northridge
24:08um
24:09um
24:11you know sister spent the night at my
24:12house before obviously i spent the night
24:15at his house before he probably spent
24:16the night at my house before um you know
24:19i

24:22correct me if i'm wrong because from
24:24what you're telling me you guys dated
24:26while you were in college together right
24:27yeah and probably after college um
24:30i i can't
24:32jeez i'm trying to think when i met my
24:34husband i met my husband

24:43when i was teaching deer up in oregon
24:45but
24:46we had long stopped you know
24:49dating before that so you haven't talked
24:51to him for a long time oh i i think i
24:53haven't talked to him in a long time um
24:55i couldn't even tell you when the last
24:56time i talked to him um
24:59i met scott i'm thinking in
25:0192 maybe um april of 92
25:05it was scott being your husband yeah i'm
25:07trying to think i was teaching dare

25:12we'll be married i got married in 1996.
25:15i think i met scott in 92
25:17prior to that i couldn't tell you how
25:19long i
25:20talked you know talked to john
25:22prior to that but since you since you
25:24met your husband scott you haven't
25:26talked to him
25:27i mean he may have called me
25:29uh once or twice before we got married
25:32right um
25:34you know
25:35geez i i lived i moved to see me
25:38in 1994 because i lost my house in the
25:41earthquake oh um
25:43uh quite honestly i probably keep in
25:45contact with
25:47a few people from the dorms we all we've
25:49all lived on the tenth floor
25:51um
25:52and
25:53um
25:55there's
25:59about three or four people i keep in
26:00contact with there's probably like six
26:02or eight of us that were all really
26:03close and who are those people
26:06oh geez um
26:08diana basta
26:10um
26:11people i still keep i i haven't been in
26:13contact with her in a long time
26:16um i mean
26:18what's uh what's i mean what's this all
26:20about i mean well let me ask you
26:22what she's trying so hard to kind of
26:26minimize the actual relationship that
26:30she had with this guy right
26:32yeah it was just some distant um
26:35partnership at one time but it's long
26:38gone though
26:39yeah she later on
26:41she claims that she didn't even love him
26:43that much
26:44and um
26:45when they were dating so he they
26:48he thought it was just a casual like
26:51hookup thing
26:52um and that's what she was playing it
26:54off like that's what it was but
26:57in the meantime you know she didn't like
26:59she obviously didn't want
27:01just casual and but she got in with his
27:04family and she made friends like with
27:07his sister and the brother she goes and
27:09takes like a bunch of yeah she goes and
27:11like
27:13takes photos of her his brother was also
27:16an athlete in college
27:18um and got all in with the family and
27:22then
27:23yeah writes the mom letters like i'll
27:26i'll do whatever john says you know like
27:28trying to get the family involved so
27:30he'll stay with her it's gross
27:35super gross
27:38thank you right yeah
27:40i wouldn't i i didn't want them her
27:42talking to my mom what
27:44yeah i told
27:47the relationship between you and john
27:50you know i don't
27:51it was kind of a weird relationship i
27:53mean we
27:55we dated um i can't say that he was my
27:57boyfriend i don't know that he would
27:59have considered me his girlfriend um
28:01yeah you were obsessed with him
28:04we just we dated we did things i played
28:06sports in college he played basketball
28:09his brother played basketball
28:11um
28:12we just
28:13you know it just
28:16didn't work out i mean i don't know what
28:18to tell you it was like i went out with
28:19other guys um
28:21saw the guys they went on lots of
28:22vacations
28:24um you know
28:26and once you guys split were you guys
28:28still friends or kind of
28:30you know i mean
28:33friendly not friendly no i don't think
28:35it was not friendly i mean we were
28:36friendly um
28:38i know that
28:40we went to hawaii
28:42um at one point um another friend of
28:45mine who's actually dying right now uh
28:48was uh went to hawaii with us um at some
28:51point
28:52um remember roughly when that was jeez
28:55um
28:57let me think
28:59um
29:00i have to check my pictures um or i'd
29:02say i'd ask greg but my friend greg is
29:04like dying of liver cancer right now um
29:06um
29:08yeah i mean i you know
29:10and you were saying that um
29:122009 now had you ever met his wife
29:16i may have do you know do you remember
29:18her name or anything or
29:20um
29:24um for what she did for a living or
29:28where she worked or anything about her
29:30well i think she like i'm gonna say that
29:32i think she was a nurse
29:34um
29:36and i can't even remember how he said he
29:38met her
29:39uh yeah i mean i i yeah i mean it's been
29:41so long ago well let me ask you did you
29:43go to their wedding you know no i didn't
29:46go to their wedding
29:47um no i don't did not go to their
29:49wedding
29:50um
29:52i couldn't even tell you what year he
29:53got married i mean you know it's it's
29:55been a million years ago you ever
29:56remember if you ever talk to her because
29:57it seems like a lot of you who were
29:59at the school at ucla you guys kind of
30:02were friends during and after school so
30:04i don't know if you guys still
30:05associated afterwards when once he was
30:07married or anything
30:08with him yeah
30:10no i don't think so i mean
30:13i would say
30:15you know
30:16the the people that were on the dorm
30:17floor we'd have we did get togethers
30:20um
30:21there's probably like four or five i
30:23don't think he ever came
30:25um
30:26yeah i don't think no it was there was
30:27like it was mostly girls
30:30you know
30:31a girl named smita
30:33diane um
30:35there's another there's two dianes but
30:37the one day i don't think she ever came
30:39i kind of lost contact with her we were
30:41good friends on the floor
30:43um
30:44yeah i mean i don't
30:45you know again i mean what
30:48you know i don't understand why you're
30:50talking about some guy dated a million
30:51years ago well do you know what happened
30:53to his wife yeah i know she got killed
30:56what did you hear about that
31:00she so casually brings up the fact that
31:02she got killed yeah like why wasn't that
31:06you know obviously in her mind at the
31:07very beginning of this when they brought
31:09up her name right yeah or why hasn't she
31:11shown more concern over that because she
31:13knows that this girl's been killed and
31:16her hotel her whole tone a voice to me
31:20just sounds like she's being put off an
31:22inconvenience like this whole time
31:24um yeah
31:25you think she would have been smarter to
31:27be a little more concerned sounding but
31:30she don't care so that's what's kind of
31:33interesting about this right because on
31:35the face of it you would assume that
31:37someone
31:39like
31:40her that has
31:42a lifetime of experience working in law
31:45enforcement
31:48would be pretty good
31:50in a circumstance like this right
31:52yeah i'm having to
31:54basically lie their way out of a
31:57situation like this
31:59but
32:00she is the worst
32:02i have like
32:05she's the worst ever at trying to hide
32:08um her guilt right
32:11yeah
32:12and i think it's because how you said
32:13it's she's got a lot of that russell
32:15williams
32:16belief that she's not going to get
32:18caught
32:19because of the position that she's in
32:21they're not even going to look at her
32:23yeah
32:24i think so much time had gone by that i
32:26think she just assumed that she was in
32:28the clear
32:30you know
32:31um 10 15 years after the fact
32:35and she was in a respectable position
32:38and i think she just
32:40you know
32:42however she dealt with it she dealt with
32:44it right
32:47you think she
32:48would know even just to show a little
32:50more um
32:52concern
32:53in a positive way not like sounding like
32:56they're bothering her
32:58put her out what are you talking about
33:00like her whole
33:02her tone the whole time is just like ugh
33:04just get it over let's just go you know
33:06like
33:08you know there's a million years ago
33:10it's a million years ago but she
33:12remembers
33:14like odd things they'll just throw out
33:17i think they're doing it on purpose
33:18right because she'll be like i don't
33:19know and then they'll say well what road
33:21was he working living on and she'll say
33:24it like boom like she knows it right
33:26away so

34:24they're acting like the art department
34:26is above the murderer people and
34:28i don't know to me it seems like i think
34:30the murderer
34:31detectives maybe should be getting paid

34:48about it

35:34you thought his wife was a nurse you
35:36have any idea where she was working at
35:37the time or
35:38did he ever mention that to you
35:40was it a hospital or a doctor's office
35:42i'm sure he must have mentioned it now
35:43now that you're bringing that up i think
35:45she worked at a hospital somewhere and
35:48yeah i may have met her at a hospital
35:50um i may have talked to her once or
35:52twice um
35:55or more
35:56um you know being that you're kind of
36:00used to see uh

36:04you guys i mean there wasn't every
36:06anything uncomfortable or anything
36:07between you and her

37:25i take a lot of photos
37:27um like ten thousand
37:29and i just did a service where i scanned
37:32everything
37:33i mean i'd seen some pictures of his
37:34brother playing well you just put them
37:35all on your computer so you can have
37:36them accessible
37:38well my partner is a big photo thing
37:42she's trying as hard as possible to
37:46make her
37:47memories of this
37:49time seems so kind of natural and
37:53believable right
37:54yeah
37:56but but then like it
37:58completely gets thrown off whenever they
38:00ask us something and she says it right
38:02away so very specific yeah yeah like
38:05even though she remembers that
38:08that she remembers like the street
38:11and then and then the cross street she
38:13even remembers like she's psycho she
38:15knows she knows where he lives like the
38:17whole time she's got that address down
38:21you know plus she's a cop come on she
38:23remembers

38:34so i
38:35spent a ton of time just scanning photos
38:38i mean i paid a company to do it
38:40um so i've got photos of i mean his
38:42brother his sister you know 10 000

38:52i'm just curious myself and they put it
38:53on it they could get all on one dvd they
38:55don't need like a hard drive or anything

41:15john's wife died and he said you may

41:37like i said i'm i'm faintly remembering
41:40that
41:41um i went to hawaii
41:44with my friend gray greg and i got
41:46certified scuba diving
41:49and i'm thinking that john met us there
41:52meaning greg and i
41:53um
41:56that could have been
41:58i got certified
42:00toward the end of 88 or i mean 20 yeah

42:08because i got recertified again and it
42:11had been like over
42:1310 10 years so i got re-certified
42:16my husband i got re-certified um
42:20and i'm pretty sure
42:22that john met us there
42:24um again i have to tell you what year

42:34may have called me

42:58a million years ago after he after he

44:33cherie finally had to kick her out then
44:36she came back you know later
44:38like maybe like a day or two later i
44:40can't remember exactly but she came back
44:42later to get the stupid
44:45you know skis and it was just
44:48sherry there who told her um
44:51told her that
44:53if she wasn't gonna stand up to her i
44:55mean if john wasn't gonna stand up to
44:58stephanie she was gonna stand up to
45:00stephanie um this is stuff that she told
45:03her dad
45:04later on
45:05she told her dad everything apparently
45:07except for stephanie's name
45:10and so that's it
45:13this is

45:15they could have caught her so easy
45:18yeah
45:19right away she tried to stand up to the
45:23cycle but
45:28she was not going to be stopped right
45:31yeah she's gonna stop coming yeah

46:50because i used to work hollywood so i
46:51just wonder if it's just no no no it was
46:53in when i worked devonshire i met mike

46:57and i'm trying to think i went to

47:03i would have met him probably some time
47:06shortly after i went to devonshire
47:07because i met him and his actually met
47:10his buddies at a fire
47:12um

47:14mike and i dated
47:16you know just really kind of casually
47:19um
47:22and we remained very we remain good
47:24friends
47:25um you still in touch with him or
47:27unfortunately he passed away oh really
47:29he died in um he had a car crash um
47:33he did uh race cars
47:35and um he went heading into a wall
47:39i couldn't tell you what year that was
47:41um
47:42but he passed away he was in a coma and
47:44they pulled the plug right seems like
47:46anyway um
47:49so

47:51i couldn't even tell you what what year
47:54i'm thinking i went to demonstrate 85
47:55and i know i met the guys because it was
47:57kind of a funny incident of how i met
47:58them and that's how i remember it was
48:01sometime probably 85 right

48:08married to somebody else because i kind

48:11all three i mean did you guys socialize
48:13like when you were out with mike did
48:14those guys come out with you too was it

48:20was two firemen eric and gary um i met
48:23them first
48:25then they introduced me to mike
48:26so that's how i met mike and my dated my
48:29mike and i dated

48:33even tell you for how long because then
48:35it would say we decided you know it
48:36wasn't working out and
48:38we'd be better friends and
48:40you know he introduced me i think
48:43to some other guy on that who now is on

48:53he's a detective he's got a twin brother
48:55who's on the fire department that's how
48:57i met randy
48:59um because he had a twin brother
49:01identical twin on the fire department

49:10he came on the job
49:12well before randy came on the job yeah

50:53police
50:54he talked to the cops when it happened
50:56and told them to look at my
50:57ex-girlfriend he didn't do anything
51:00until he was ready to go
51:03to this hawaii trip with her then he
51:06calls the cops he didn't call them at
51:08any point you know like what's going on
51:10with my wife's murder he called when
51:13he's gonna go to hawaii with her hey by
51:16the way did you clear her and then
51:17they're like oh yeah whatever you know
51:19nothing's going on with her so then he
51:21goes to hawaii and that's it that's all
51:23the contact
51:25that he had with the police
51:27the whole time scumbag
51:30as far as i'm concerned like that's just
51:32a scumbag i'm sorry whatever
51:36if he even had any kind of doubt why was
51:38he doing that what a lack

51:44he's a victim too i guess but
51:47it makes it hard to feel bad for him i

52:26not like i was a huge floozy or anything
52:28but no but you know i mean a lot of
52:30times right at least from my female
52:32partners that i've had you know it's
52:34hard dating
52:35guys that aren't involved in kind of our
52:37circle right because some a lot some
52:38guys are intimidated by you know women
52:40police officers yeah randy was like an
52:42engineer at the time uh he was like some
52:45kind of an engineer on a truck on a rig
52:47on a pharmacy no no um an engineer oh a
52:50professional engineer yeah i think he
52:51lost a job and then came on on the
52:53department i see so

52:56getting back to some stuff
52:58as far as you recall after john's wife
53:00died
53:03did you start a relationship again with
53:04with john or
53:06dating casually or anything like that
53:10like i said
53:12he met greg and i in hawaii okay
53:15um
53:17that was something you guys kind of
53:19planned together like go as a group or
53:21you you ran into him no i i think that
53:25obviously i must have talked to him
53:27and i said hey i'm going to hawaii with
53:29my buddy greg we're school or we're
53:31scuba we just got certified scuba diving
53:34um
53:35uh we're going to be in hawaii hey if
53:37you want to come and join us come join
53:38us right and i i think that's what it
53:41was um
53:42i met i may have asked some other people
53:44to as well
53:45um
53:46you know
53:47uh what island did we go to
53:52i think the big island in kauai he
53:54either met us on the big island or kauai
53:56i'm thinking of
53:58greg and i might have scuba dived a lot
54:00and on the big island
54:02as well as kauai i'm i i don't remember
54:05which island again i'd have to look at
54:06my pictures
54:07um i traveled a lot um on my vacations i
54:11mean i was always gone for at least a
54:13month
54:14um
54:15and i would go places and i would either
54:17run into people or you know
54:20you know meet people
54:22um and
54:23greg uh this great we're talking about
54:25he was
54:27like someone you were dating or just a
54:30buddy no you know what i would i would
54:31say
54:33we started out um
54:35probably just buddies
54:37um and either i was with somebody or he
54:40was with somebody but it was all it was
54:42kind of like we ended up just kind of
54:43being like brother and sister
54:45um
54:47maybe he wanted something more but um
54:50you know it just it never you know
54:52worked out but we we did things together
54:55um
54:56i consider them i've probably known them
55:00let's say i've been on the job almost 26
55:02years
55:03i've probably known growing 23 24 years
55:06um does he still talk to him
55:08oh yeah he's dying a liver cancer right

55:40um i um i called maybe some of his
55:42friends that that that i knew and i mean
55:44obviously it's shocked if you're if i
55:45heard it at work you know um which i may
55:48have i faintly remember a bulletin going
55:50around

55:59family

57:54she went to the hospital dressed all
57:56like a floozy
57:58they
57:59they'd say that she came all like you
58:01know ready to go
58:03i don't know why you would want to dress
58:05up like that for
58:06your you know your arrival like that's
58:10kind of weird
58:12and i can't imagine she was very hot
58:16because i don't know she's odd to me
58:18it's weird that guys would even like
58:20want to hook up with her unless they
58:23i just think horrible things so because
58:25she's crazy so i shouldn't like judge

58:32that she just gets away with it and she
58:34is pretty good about because i mean as
58:37many times as i watch it sometimes
58:38they'll ask her a question

58:47i forget what what did they ask her like
58:51i can't even remember what they asked
58:52this lady so but you know those cops are
58:54trying to
58:56not forget it's just got to be like wow

1:01:28when scott moved in with me in 1993
1:01:32sometime in 93 because i met scott
1:01:35in

1:01:37in april 92 i was teaching deer up in
1:01:39oregon
1:01:40um
1:01:41and
1:01:44um
1:01:46he moved down in fact he may have moved
1:01:48down in 92
1:01:5092 or 93 there was a big earthquake no
1:01:52when was a big earthquake
1:01:54no 94. 94. yeah so
1:01:58i think scott might have moved into 93
1:02:01sometime in 93.

1:02:14and so i faintly recall that john may
1:02:17have called a few times and i'm like hey

1:02:27and and that could have been a few times
1:02:28it could have been once it could have

1:02:34the earthquake that you're well no
1:02:36probably probably after scott moved in i
1:02:38think i met scott in april of 92 oh okay

1:02:42april of 92 because i was t i stopped

1:02:52i think i stopped teaching here sometime
1:02:53in 92.

1:02:57and when you and when you say that you
1:02:59may have
1:03:00um you know that you talked to his wife
1:03:02said hey or you know i don't know if it
1:03:04was i guess it wasn't his wife at that
1:03:06time girlfriend or whatever and yeah i

1:03:09quite honestly i don't even remember
1:03:10when you said like hey you know he's

1:03:28recall no i mean
1:03:30i would think that would stand out i

1:03:34standing out in my mind um
1:03:37you know
1:03:39so you didn't have any problems with her
1:03:41then you didn't have any issues with her
1:03:43no i mean let me let me ask you
1:03:45it seems like you didn't have any issue
1:03:47now did she have an issue with you as
1:03:49far as because now you you're telling
1:03:51her hey you know tell them to stop
1:03:53calling that you know she's like
1:03:55you know she figured she'd be threatened
1:03:57by you you know i
1:03:59i don't know i mean
1:04:01from what you remember as far as when
1:04:02you talk to her maybe you didn't take it
1:04:04as serious but maybe you know did she
1:04:07if she was bothering me like was she
1:04:08throwing things at me or something or
1:04:09not just you know as far as you're
1:04:12trying to explain like hey haven't
1:04:13stopped calling me you know stop playing
1:04:14games you know i i tell you
1:04:17if the conversation i couldn't even tell
1:04:19you how long the conversation if you
1:04:20said did it last a half an hour did it
1:04:22last three minutes to the last 20
1:04:23minutes i can't even remember it's been
1:04:26so long ago you know um you just
1:04:28remember talking to her telling you and
1:04:30that's why you said how many times you
1:04:31talked to her i don't know how many
1:04:32times i've talked to her maybe it was
1:04:33once maybe it was twice and it was three
1:04:35times you know i i honestly don't know
1:04:38um i i don't know what year it was um
1:04:42if you if he said i met her in such and
1:04:44such a year i'd go okay well i don't
1:04:45even know what year you met her um
1:04:48i graduated from uc in 1982
1:04:52okay
1:04:53i graduated 82
1:04:54like i said i don't know if he graduated
1:04:56i know he was a little older than i was
1:04:59so i don't know if he graduated a year
1:05:01before or two years before because
1:05:02people are on different
1:05:03um either on the four-year program or
1:05:05the five-year program
1:05:07um where did you come on the job

1:05:11oh so almost pretty much immediately
1:05:13after you got out of school
1:05:15yeah i worked at a law firm for a year
1:05:18um
1:05:19and then came on the job
1:05:21but in any way in regards to seeing him
1:05:24not seeing him
1:05:25we went to friends weddings that were
1:05:27you know
1:05:29from ucla
1:05:30um i may have gone to some of his
1:05:32friends weddings from where he worked
1:05:35he may have gone to things with me
1:05:37you know
1:05:38um
1:05:41you know i mean i i don't know how many
1:05:43times we went to do things you know
1:05:45or didn't do things right like i said
1:05:47his sister
1:05:49um
1:05:50i know a sister
1:05:53his brother his sister i know stayed at
1:05:55my town house
1:05:57a number of times i can tell you how
1:05:59many times right um
1:06:01i would watch his brother you know i
1:06:03should uh take pictures at a basketball
1:06:05game or two where was your townhouse at
1:06:08in granada hills
1:06:10um below the artist
1:06:12yeah she turned up at the hospital where
1:06:15sherry is working and
1:06:18made an absolute
1:06:21showdown of
1:06:23a situation like trying to
1:06:26um
1:06:27chew her out basically in front of
1:06:28everyone that she was working in front
1:06:30of um
1:06:34that's why she kind of that's why she
1:06:36has to say maybe that happened i'm kind
1:06:38of remembering
1:06:40because there's so many ways a vague
1:06:42memory yeah
1:06:44she's gotta be like yeah but i don't
1:06:46remember
1:06:48because there's probably a million
1:06:49witnesses
1:06:51and how horrible to be um
1:06:53just all of a sudden you know you're at
1:06:55work and everything's cool and then this
1:06:57lady comes and makes a scene and
1:06:59everyone knows that sherry just got
1:07:02married i'm sure she was loud about it
1:07:05how embarrassing in so many ways
1:07:08um yeah and all right
1:07:10and that
1:07:12i like thinking that she was somebody's
1:07:14dare teacher that's crazy to be like i
1:07:17wonder where these little kids are
1:07:19because do you know what dare the dare
1:07:21program was
1:07:22um they would send cops to schools and
1:07:25they would teach you know
1:07:27not to do drugs and
1:07:29don't do drugs and they would go every
1:07:31week like once a day once a week
1:07:34oh that was the dear thing was yeah
1:07:36that's what so she was some kid's
1:07:38teacher i wonder like
1:07:40how old the kids were that she was
1:07:42teaching and like i wonder how she was
1:07:44as a teacher like
1:07:46god
1:07:47she's always passing out like oh my gosh
1:07:50she looks like she's on drugs that's why
1:07:52i'm like she's so wild
1:07:54so
1:07:55it's just telling you not to do drugs
1:07:59she's too much
1:08:01it's just too much
1:08:02see

1:08:04oh i'm sorry the 405 and the 5 um the
1:08:07405
1:08:08the 405 turns into five the 118. um they
1:08:12they came down in the earthquake okay so
1:08:15okay

1:08:21remember phil's at her house or at the
1:08:24place she worked at
1:08:26no i'm thinking that i'm thinking it was
1:08:28probably
1:08:30for some reason i want to say that the
1:08:32hospital seemed
1:08:34that you know if you say he got married
1:08:36in
1:08:3785 or something i'm thinking that you
1:08:40know maybe the hospital was on my way to
1:08:42work in hollywood i mean that's kind of
1:08:44sounding familiar

1:08:47would you have gone on duty
1:08:49oh no i'm sure i wouldn't if i you know
1:08:52i'm i'm pretty good about not doing
1:08:53stuff
1:08:54you know i mean now i'm not saying that
1:08:56you know you haven't done stuff on duty
1:08:58but i i i would i mean i would have been
1:09:01working with somebody okay you know so
1:09:04i wouldn't i wouldn't think i mean i try
1:09:06to avoid doing stuff on duty
1:09:09so you would have gone it was enroute to
1:09:11work you more likely would have gone to
1:09:13her work and had this discussion with
1:09:15her i mean that's sounding familiar i
1:09:17mean that's now that you guys are
1:09:19bringing this stuff up um
1:09:21i mean it sound that sounds familiar um
1:09:23but again i mean
1:09:24you know
1:09:26what's i mean what's this got to do with
1:09:28me dating him and you know her getting
1:09:30killed i mean i i don't you know i don't
1:09:33have anything to do with it and
1:09:36yeah so vague so big stephanie
1:09:39why am i being questioned about this
1:09:42i've got nothing to do with this
1:09:44yeah not helpful at all
1:09:46you're so inconvenient you're like like

1:10:04said we just literally got this the
1:10:06other day and and you're going through

1:10:10next door right and so you know i mean
1:10:12obviously it's like we recognize the
1:10:14name we know that you know you work next
1:10:15door to us and so we're trying to get
1:10:17some background we're trying to figure
1:10:18this out i mean this is from a long time
1:10:20ago oh i know you know and things have
1:10:22been kind of slow for us and so you know
1:10:24chief beck has said hey you know i want
1:10:26you guys working i don't want you just
1:10:27sitting around reading the paper yeah so
1:10:29he's kind of pushing some older cases
1:10:30out even to the guys who work active
1:10:32cases because you know and so we see
1:10:33this and we're just like oh
1:10:35you know we want to talk to you about it
1:10:36but of course the only reason we did it
1:10:37here is because we're getting into some
1:10:38pretty personal stuff in your
1:10:40relationship you know my husband's on
1:10:41the job
1:10:44we don't want to take the risk in one of
1:10:45those interview rooms when the door
1:10:46closed someone's going to get supplies
1:10:48and see us on a monitor here's or
1:10:49whatever i appreciate it i mean i know
1:10:51[ __ ] like i said that's where people go
1:10:52when there's orals you know when they're
1:10:53doing orals you guys will go in there
1:10:54and try and watch them what are the
1:10:55answers to the questions you know that
1:10:57yeah so so we just we just want to
1:10:59afford you the most privacy and
1:11:00confidentiality we could i appreciate
1:11:02like i said i mean this goes way back
1:11:05and i mean it was very sad you know
1:11:07obviously um
1:11:10i i haven't i you know i
1:11:12when we were in college
1:11:14some of us would go down to his house in
1:11:16san diego i went down his house with him
1:11:19you know um with with him
1:11:21i know i i'm trying to think of some
1:11:22other people that may have gone down is
1:11:24that where he grew up is down there yeah
1:11:25down in san diego oh okay i know his dad
1:11:28was a professor at san diego state i
1:11:30don't know if he still is
1:11:32um
1:11:33i don't know what happened to his sister
1:11:35don't know what happened to his brother
1:11:37um
1:11:38you know i'm sure his dad's probably
1:11:40retired by now
1:11:41he was i think older
1:11:43um
1:11:44even back then right um
1:11:47and i
1:11:48i can't even tell you the last time i
1:11:50had any contact with any of them it's
1:11:51been so long did he tell you what
1:11:53happened like what he heard from the
1:11:54detectives or the police or
1:11:58you know what he may have um
1:12:02for some reason i'm thinking that
1:12:05i mean again this is like
1:12:12drugs or something i mean i think i
1:12:15faintly remember him
1:12:16mentioning something maybe about cocaine
1:12:20um
1:12:21that she was involved with that you know
1:12:23i don't know that he said she was
1:12:25involved or they thought you you know
1:12:27again it's been so long i you know he
1:12:29could have mentioned he could have told
1:12:31me the whole story of what happened and
1:12:33i mean like i said i'm faintly remember
1:12:35even between him or the flyer
1:12:38um
1:12:39that there was some kind of a burglary
1:12:42um
1:12:44you know
1:12:45let me ask did the detectives ever reach
1:12:47out to you
1:12:48no no one's ever talked to me i don't
1:12:50think anybody ever talked to me about
1:12:52about him um it seems like you know well
1:12:55i i
1:12:58i'm thinking that i did talk to a

1:13:37i don't even know if you said a name if
1:13:38i would remember it because i worked van
1:13:40nuys for a while

1:13:44no we're detectives
1:13:46um
1:13:48when did i go to van nuys
1:13:51i work devonshire until 88
1:13:55do you think she knows that she's [ __ ]
1:13:58by
1:13:59uh yeah she knows at this point that
1:14:02she's gonna have to go and call a lawyer
1:14:05i don't know why right like i i don't
1:14:07know why she doesn't ask for it
1:14:09other than she just doesn't want to look
1:14:11guilty for asking for a lawyer
1:14:14but uh
1:14:15it's like yeah
1:14:18i think if they let her go then she
1:14:19would have
1:14:21probably wouldn't call the lawyer
1:14:24or something yeah and i think for a
1:14:26minute there she had some hope when
1:14:29she's like yeah you know it was really
1:14:30sad and like i said it was a million
1:14:32years ago or whatever she's going
1:14:34through i think for a second
1:14:37she thought it was going to be cool
1:14:39yeah yeah yeah the governor that trying
1:14:42to give her or yeah like it's going to
1:14:44be ending
1:14:45yeah this is a kind of casual sort of
1:14:48discussion because yeah you're gonna
1:14:51link to this but we're just gonna
1:14:53we're just joining up the dots that's
1:14:56always happening in here
1:14:57right before lunch
1:15:00she hasn't had for her breakfast yet
1:15:05she's gross
1:15:08then i went to dare to 92
1:15:12i worked twice at van nuys
1:15:14um
1:15:21sometime in the
1:15:2290s um
1:15:27yeah i i know before i busted my leg up
1:15:30i was there in 98 because that year
1:15:33sticks out because i had a really bad
1:15:34leg injury
1:15:36um and i was there prior to that but i
1:15:39couldn't tell you what year it was just
1:15:41a few years i made detective i think in
1:15:4393
1:15:4693
1:15:48so um
1:15:50i was at van nuys and then i went back
1:15:53and then i had a leg injury and then
1:15:54they transferred me to demonstrate
1:15:55because i couldn't drive
1:15:57i couldn't drive very far with the my
1:15:59bad leg injury
1:16:00so um
1:16:02but yeah i i think i talked to somebody
1:16:05um
1:16:07would you remember any other
1:16:08conversation as far as what they were
1:16:10looking for
1:16:12i couldn't say i mean they may have told
1:16:15me i said hey you know
1:16:16i went to school with him
1:16:18um either somebody called me or i saw
1:16:20the fly i may have seen the flyer at
1:16:23that point and i called up if someone's
1:16:25name was on the flyer i made a call to
1:16:27speak to them i said hey if there's
1:16:29anything i can do
1:16:30you know um
1:16:32call me this is why i work you know i
1:16:34went to uh you know
1:16:36school with them
1:16:37um
1:16:40i couldn't say i couldn't tell you who
1:16:42it was
1:16:43but you do remember that that someone
1:16:45you think reached out to
1:16:46you i mean the detective yeah called you
1:16:49up and talked to you or i called them
1:16:52one of the two yeah
1:16:54you know i remember talking to somebody
1:16:57but
1:16:58i'm thinking it was a man
1:17:01i'm sure there's probably more men back
1:17:02then
1:17:03right now
1:17:05um
1:17:06so again that's
1:17:08i mean that's not really all i can
1:17:10remember about that yeah
1:17:14let me get back uh to as far as when you
1:17:17said that uh
1:17:19john was calling you to to see you and
1:17:22during that time you felt that he was
1:17:24felt he was either seeing her was he
1:17:26engaged or married did you know
1:17:28couldn't say
1:17:36no that would have been
1:17:37scott moved in 93
1:17:40so that would have been you said 86 or
1:17:4285 or something scott's your only
1:17:43husband you've never been married no
1:17:45never been i got married in i think 96
1:17:48when i i got married in 96 but he moved
1:17:50in in 93.
1:17:53but uh
1:17:54during that time that you were seeing
1:17:56john you know was he acting kind of
1:17:59kind of squirrelly or kind of sneaking
1:18:01around when he'd hook up with you or
1:18:02anything like that
1:18:04to make you think hey yeah it probably
1:18:06was i mean
1:18:08i mean because when the impression i get
1:18:10you've known him a long time well let's
1:18:12see
1:18:13i met him in 78. no i i met him in
1:18:16school i started ucla in 78.
1:18:18um so you know him well
1:18:22during that period of time yeah i mean
1:18:24was he acting squirrely
1:18:27you know
1:18:28i don't even remember where he was
1:18:29living then
1:18:31you know i
1:18:33know well let me ask you after he hooked
1:18:35up with uh he was living on roscoe or
1:18:38wherever else he was living right
1:18:40well after he hooked up with uh with
1:18:42sherry
1:18:43do you know uh where they were living
1:18:46no you asked me that already
1:18:48and i said well obviously they were
1:18:49living in van nuys division yeah
1:18:52um
1:18:54i may have known
1:18:56i mean i you know again i you know did
1:18:58he ever give me the address
1:19:00maybe
1:19:02you know i don't remember i mean i don't
1:19:03know
1:19:05because the only reason i'm asking you
1:19:07again is because we've been talking i
1:19:08know some stuff has come to you because
1:19:10you're like oh
1:19:10you know
1:19:11so
1:19:13that's why i'm asking if you've ever
1:19:14been to the house and when you said van

1:19:47different we have parties

1:19:59they have on her at this point right
1:20:02she's kind of saucing out there they
1:20:05have some kind of evidence that she's
1:20:07involved in this
1:20:09yeah she's trying to like kind of
1:20:11preempt it
1:20:13especially when um she says you know you
1:20:15asked me that already
1:20:17i think that's when she starts uh
1:20:19sounding a little more like oh okay like
1:20:21she sounds a little more irritated now
1:20:24but um
1:20:26not like some had already irritated to
1:20:28begin with but like more inconvenience
1:20:30so now it's like i think
1:20:32like you said she's getting a little
1:20:33more smart like she's
1:20:36she's really
1:20:37she's knowing how is she so much trying
1:20:39her best to get it together but it's not
1:20:43working
1:20:44she thinks she's going to get away with
1:20:46it so like it's no it's a million years
1:20:48ago they should just drop it like
1:20:51i forgot you know of course you forgot
1:20:53about the million years ago
1:20:55right but she remembers so many things
1:20:57like
1:20:58she remembers way too many details and
1:21:00then pretends like she doesn't so
1:21:06came to
1:21:07again you know at one point because
1:21:10we we knew people from school together
1:21:13i knew different people he knew
1:21:15different people i knew people that he
1:21:16knew from his work um
1:21:19you know that lived in the valley
1:21:21um
1:21:23you know
1:21:25so as far as for social events or
1:21:26anything i mean it's
1:21:29i mean you're not sure if you've ever
1:21:30been to the house because
1:21:36but it's safe to say that would have
1:21:37been the only time like for something
1:21:39social
1:21:41yeah if i went there for something
1:21:42social yeah i mean because i know you
1:21:45you went to talk to her
1:21:47at the hospital
1:21:49uh regarding this issue with john
1:21:52to you know kind of like hey
1:21:54what's going to happen here with this
1:21:55thing but would this ever have followed
1:21:57up to her house where you went to talk
1:21:59to her just say hey you know what i
1:22:01i don't even know that i knew where they
1:22:02lived i you know that's what i'm saying
1:22:05i don't
1:22:06if i knew where they lived and i'd been
1:22:07there if it was for something social i'd
1:22:10i would i'm i'm
1:22:11and i can't see how many times i i saw
1:22:13her face-to-face
1:22:14you know he lived on roscoe did i ever
1:22:16see her there
1:22:17i don't know i mean
1:22:19i may have seen her at his apartment on
1:22:21roscoe
1:22:23i may have met her there
1:22:25you know i mean
1:22:27but you didn't have any issues with her
1:22:29right
1:22:30no i mean
1:22:31you know obviously if he was dating me
1:22:33and dating her i probably said hey pick
1:22:36or something you know you know back then
1:22:39um
1:22:40i can't say that we
1:22:42ever screamed or yeah you know it's
1:22:45i mean he was a pretty mellow guy

1:22:49i think i was pretty mellow i don't i
1:22:51don't think we had some big huge blow up
1:22:53to say
1:22:54you know why we stopped dating or you
1:22:56know
1:22:57and i even think that when i was dating
1:22:59him i was probably like i said i was
1:23:01probably going out with other guys and
1:23:02he was probably going out with other
1:23:04girls right you know i don't know
1:23:06i mean would you remember if she
1:23:08snapped on you and just like hey man
1:23:10it's my man you know you get leave them
1:23:12alone you know blah blah blah that kind
1:23:14of stuff
1:23:14you know
1:23:16and would you remember an incident like
1:23:18that i mean because that would be like
1:23:19what well you know and maybe that
1:23:21happened i mean
1:23:24gosh you know
1:23:26it's been so long ago i you know i just
1:23:29i mean that's not
1:23:30ringing a bell
1:23:32um because the times i've seen you
1:23:34around in our office i'm crazy
1:23:37but you're always kind of like real
1:23:39i mean you seem kind of bubbly oh i'm pr
1:23:41and people think i'm really hyper um but
1:23:44i can i mean i can get
1:23:46i can get upset you know and and then i
1:23:48forget five seconds later you know you
1:23:50know how guys rash you and you go
1:23:53ah you know um
1:23:55i mean i've done that in the office you
1:23:56know but it's like and then i'm you know
1:23:59and then i'm
1:24:00you know you know i mean water under the
1:24:03bridge yeah i mean it's like people
1:24:04think i'm crazy and then they think i'm
1:24:06crazy at home and i'm you know more i'm
1:24:09i'm a hyper person at work i'm you know
1:24:11i i enjoy my job i get excited i you
1:24:14know
1:24:14um i enjoy the job i've always enjoyed
1:24:18the job um you got a good gig so
1:24:21you know
1:24:22um so
1:24:24you know i
1:24:25i you know i don't know it's like like i
1:24:27said this stuff's been so long ago um
1:24:29you know i'm sure as soon as i walk out
1:24:31here i'll go oh shoot i did 25 things
1:24:34i'll remember
1:24:35um you know but you'll call us sir i
1:24:37mean you'll just come over our desks
1:24:38yeah i mean i i don't know what else you
1:24:40need to know like i said you know we
1:24:42knew friends together
1:24:44a lot of the friends that you know that
1:24:46we socialized in the dorms i would say i
1:24:49mean there was a group of us that
1:24:52um we were all really close i mean even
1:24:54this one guy was thinking of you know
1:24:56diana basta we were all really close i
1:25:00haven't talked to her in a million years
1:25:02um
1:25:02diana best of being a friend of you and
1:25:04john's or yeah we all lived on the dorms
1:25:07on the dorms together i don't know if
1:25:08she lived on the saint we
1:25:10i'm trying to think i think i know john
1:25:12lived on arfler because his roommate was
1:25:14dave newman dave newman that was a big
1:25:16huge big shot
1:25:18whatever
1:25:20she still thinks at this point she's
1:25:22walking out of here doesn't she yeah
1:25:24they did a really good job when
1:25:27when he's like oh you know but you'll
1:25:29come over to our desk if you think about
1:25:31it you know if you have any
1:25:34and then i think that gave her a little
1:25:35more confidence
1:25:37totally yeah getting out of that well
1:25:39you're not playing well she's getting
1:25:41arrested at the end of this uh
1:25:43interview right

1:25:50me that
1:25:52they got um away with this without
1:25:54reading her rights
1:25:56just based off of like they're gonna
1:25:58talk as colleagues over a case like um
1:26:01yeah but it's good they did because she
1:26:03wouldn't have she for sure wouldn't have
1:26:05talked as much as
1:26:07she did
1:26:08if they had just came in and read her
1:26:10her rights she would have been like well
1:26:12i got to get a lawyer

1:26:20how that can be just because they're
1:26:22cops when she's a sausage bagged but i
1:26:24guess they got away with it so

1:27:52her i don't even know where i mean i

1:27:54even know he told me where he met her
1:27:56from i mean he may have told me i

1:28:02and there was lots i mean you know
1:28:04there's
1:28:05there was other people that knew other
1:28:07people
1:28:08um
1:28:08you know that were friends of
1:28:10everybody's
1:28:11um
1:28:13you know
1:28:15um i mean i don't know what else to tell
1:28:17you well one of the concerns i have is
1:28:19looking at some of the notes is uh
1:28:21some of sherry's friends said that
1:28:24you and her were having a problem
1:28:27of the john situation
1:28:32well
1:28:33i number one i don't know who her
1:28:34friends are
1:28:36um
1:28:38i like her face she makes the craziest
1:28:41faces
1:28:43oh she's just hating the words that are
1:28:47coming
1:28:48towards her right now
1:28:51you can't believe it
1:28:54look at her face oh my gosh she's just
1:28:56um
1:28:57man i would be so tired if i use that
1:28:59much energy just on my face like after
1:29:02an hour be really tired
1:29:07she's trying so hard to make it sound so
1:29:10preposterous that these friends have
1:29:13made this uh
1:29:15suggestion you know yeah when she knows
1:29:17she made scenes she made public scenes
1:29:20all over the place
1:29:21yeah

1:29:24my god that's for the lawyer stupid

1:29:33he did tell me where he met her
1:29:35i don't even who these friends are a

1:29:45times because that's probably
1:29:47not even true i i can't even remember um
1:29:51again did i meet him at her plate when
1:29:53he you know he lived on roscoe for i
1:29:54think
1:29:55uh quite a while but i couldn't tell you
1:29:57how long he lived in roscoe and the only
1:29:59reason i remember the place now is
1:30:00because it's like a huge dope built
1:30:02place now where they you know it may
1:30:04have been back then but you know maybe
1:30:06we didn't know back then um
1:30:09i could have met her there i could have
1:30:10you know
1:30:13you know i don't even know that i met
1:30:16any of their friends
1:30:18i i don't i i can't say that i don't
1:30:21know that that's a true statement well
1:30:23that's what i'm reading is that
1:30:25you guys have problems with each other
1:30:26and words are being exchanged and it's
1:30:28all relating to
1:30:29john

1:31:16drama in this relationship no i don't

1:31:22as what the friends are saying in
1:31:23regards to
1:31:25this you know the problems that they're
1:31:26saying you were having with with sherry
1:31:29i mean it seems like the relationship is
1:31:31just going on even playing that just uh

1:31:34don't have a recollection of that at all
1:31:36no no and because from what you're
1:31:38telling me is when you guys met at the
1:31:40hospital

1:31:42i mean you guys talk but it wasn't
1:31:44from what you recall confrontational
1:31:46from either side

1:36:59and i don't think any of my cars had
1:37:00ever been stolen no
1:37:02my cars haven't been stolen

1:38:37my my car's broken into a ventura before
1:38:41so
1:38:42is your mom still around her
1:38:44yeah your dad
1:38:46yeah but i don't really have much of a
1:38:49relationship with my dad

1:38:53i can tell you where he lives if you

1:39:02like i said as we were looking at the
1:39:03case and you know we read the notes as
1:39:06far as from
1:39:07uh
1:39:08sherry's friends saying
1:39:10you you guys have problems or words they
1:39:13got heated
1:39:15you know the reason we're asking is they
1:39:17had mentioned that an incident at her
1:39:18work had occurred
1:39:20and they've also told us that an
1:39:22incident at her house occurred
1:39:26you know what and this is at her house
1:39:28during the period of time that they're
1:39:30married
1:39:33that's just not sounding familiar at all
1:39:35i mean i
1:39:36you know what i
1:39:38that's just not
1:39:40this is when i started here up when they
1:39:43actually uh
1:39:46show her some of their their cards right
1:39:49yeah and she had uh reported her guns
1:39:52stolen the santa monica police two weeks
1:39:54before
1:39:55the murder
1:39:57oh really yeah
1:40:00yeah she's
1:40:03she thought she was
1:40:07i clear again if someone says that i was
1:40:09at her house and i had an incident with
1:40:11her
1:40:13i you know i that just doesn't sound i i

1:40:16you know was john there did john say
1:40:18this happen because and other people
1:40:20were there
1:40:21i just i don't recall
1:40:23i mean it just doesn't sound
1:40:25you know familiar and this is an
1:40:27incident where you showed up
1:40:29you weren't supposed to show up

1:40:33things got heated
1:40:34at his house
1:40:38that i you know i that just doesn't

1:42:06and keeps going and she says exactly

1:42:11and makes it sound like
1:42:13why would i do that like she says
1:42:15exactly what she did we got in the fight
1:42:16so i killed her
1:42:18yeah why would i do that you totally did
1:42:25if it happened i honestly don't remember

1:42:29so i can tell you i mean

1:42:37intense incidents in your life that have
1:42:39occurred i mean you'd recall those right

1:42:45crash something you're involved in you'd

1:42:48remember i mean i would think if it was
1:42:50something that crazy i mean i i can't
1:42:52say you say how many fights have you
1:42:54gotten into you know in your life
1:42:58you know i mean a few at work well
1:43:00fights at work are kind of different
1:43:01because we've all had uses of force or
1:43:02whatever but why didn't you have even a
1:43:04lot of those right but you know if

1:43:07mean like if dan and i got mad at each
1:43:10other and we threw blows in the squad
1:43:11room i mean 20 years later i would
1:43:13remember it i mean i would think i would
1:43:15remember it but that's that's what i'm

1:45:31you know well you know the standards
1:45:32you've been doing this longer than i
1:45:34have
1:45:35uh well about that
1:45:37i get 26 years on
1:45:38going on 26 19
1:45:42but you know as they processed
1:45:45everything uh they did the best they
1:45:46could at that time and they looked at a
1:45:48lot of a lot of people different things
1:45:49in this case
1:45:50and you're right i mean if you guys are
1:45:52claiming that i'm a suspect then you
1:45:54know i i got a problem with you know
1:45:56with that okay okay
1:45:58so
1:45:59you know if you're if you're doing this
1:46:01as an interrogation you're saying hey
1:46:03i'm a suspect well now i got a problem
1:46:05with you know now you're accusing me of
1:46:07this
1:46:08is that what you're is that what you're

1:46:49i mean how would you guys like it if the
1:46:51tables were turned on you i understand

1:46:56if this makes you uncomfortable and you
1:46:57want to get well now you're starting to
1:46:59make me uncomfortable
1:47:01the thing is i mean detectives did what
1:47:03they could at that time on the crime
1:47:04scene okay and the burglary thing you're
1:47:06talking about that is an angle that they
1:47:07looked at
1:47:08i go but now we're looking at everything
1:47:10else on the case because nobody was ever
1:47:12arrested on the case i i don't know that
1:47:16or not
1:47:17now we'd like to do is
1:47:20obviously you know about all the dna
1:47:22stuff and things of the nature that you
1:47:23know gets done on cases nowadays
1:47:26you know if we asked you for a dna swab
1:47:28would you be willing to give us one
1:47:30maybe
1:47:31because now now
1:47:33now because now i'm thinking i probably
1:47:36need to talk to a lawyer
1:47:37okay i mean
1:47:40well i because i know how this stuff
1:47:41works okay don't get me wrong you're
1:47:42right i have been doing this a long time

1:48:01was saying that the dna was um
1:48:05wrong

1:48:15and i wish i had been recording this
1:48:16because because now it sounds like you
1:48:19know there's
1:48:21you know you're selling these people
1:48:22saying i'm fighting with her and now it
1:48:24sounds like you're trying to you know
1:48:26i've been doing this a long time
1:48:28okay and and now it almost sounds like
1:48:30you're trying to pin something on me now
1:48:32i got that sense well what it gets to on
1:48:34these on these cases and you know it as
1:48:35well as i do our job is to identify and
1:48:37eliminate i can't believe this so if we
1:48:40ask you to a point to give us a dna
1:48:42sample
1:48:43a buckle swab so we can identify or
1:48:46eliminate you you should be willing to
1:48:48do that maybe
1:48:50because i know this i i i that's where
1:48:52we're at too i mean
1:48:54because
1:48:55right now
1:48:56from looking at the evidence it's you
1:48:58know it's possible we may have some dna
1:49:00at the location
1:49:01that's great and
1:49:04we're going to do what we can to try to
1:49:05put this thing together

1:49:10are pointing at you for whatever reason
1:49:12i don't know why that's just crazy i
1:49:14mean that's just that's absolutely crazy

1:49:20to do your job and i guess i'm gonna

2:12:39sherry's parents were still alive when
2:12:41she got caught

2:12:45if they had passed

2:13:08shortly before noon the
2:13:10jury announced they have a verdict we
2:13:12will take the very this time people of
2:13:14the state of california versus stephanie
2:13:17eileen lazarus case number ba 357423
2:13:23we the jury and above entitled action
2:13:25find the defendant stephanie eileen
2:13:27lazarus guilty of the crime of murder of
2:13:30sherry rasmussen in violation of penal
2:13:32code section 187 a a felony as charged
2:13:37in count one of the information
2:13:39we further find the murder was of the
2:13:41first degree
2:13:50thank you for the opportunity to speak
2:13:51during this hearing
2:13:54there are really no words that can
2:13:55describe the loss of sherry and the
2:13:58whole of the of this experience
2:14:00so it makes no sense to talk very long
2:14:02it suffices to say that the rasmus and
2:14:04family
2:14:05my family and stephanie's family have
2:14:08been thrust into a bizarre world of
2:14:10disbelief and indescribable sadness
2:14:14sherry rasmussen had a profound impact
2:14:16on so many people
2:14:22i was proud that she agreed to be my
2:14:24wife it was impossible not to notice
2:14:27sherry when she entered her room to me
2:14:29her physical presence was startling
2:14:31i can clearly remember the first moment
2:14:33i laid eyes on her
2:14:35sherry rasmussen was a physical presence
2:14:37and my heart still races when i look at
2:14:38pictures of her but sherry was
2:14:40extraordinary more for who she was than
2:14:43the way she looked
2:14:45she was a hard worker a consummate
2:14:47professional a leader a diplomat
2:14:50forgiving
2:14:51tough and a kid at heart
2:14:53cheri's loss the way she died and the
2:14:55trial 25 years after her death has had a
2:14:58profound impact on many many others
2:15:02the effects are broad and span a
2:15:03generation creating pain for those whose
2:15:06lives should have never been touched by
2:15:07this tragic event
2:15:09again words are feeble tools for
2:15:11describing these impacts
2:15:13but there are so many moments and so
2:15:14very many tears
2:15:16and the fact that sherry's death
2:15:17occurred because she met and married me
2:15:20brings me to my knees stephanie lazarus
2:15:22was sentenced to 27 years to life for
2:15:25the murder of sherry rasmussen she is
2:15:27currently being held inside the maximum
2:15:29security unit of the central california
2:15:31women's facility
