1:29new case and reviewing the case

2:34between you guys

2:48not really i mean i knew that he got
2:50married years ago uh-huh did you ever
2:52meet her

3:23somebody about art and how you guys are

3:30you know we knew that this when we saw
3:32this in the in in this chrono that maybe
3:35you know there was some relationship
3:36there that's what the chrono seemed to
3:37indicate and we didn't want
3:39to come up to you at your desk and ask
3:41those kinds of questions or do anything
3:43you know how up there people can see
3:44what's going on if you go into an
3:45interview room or people are in there
3:46getting supplies so we wanted to afford
3:49you some privacy some confidentiality to
3:51talk about this because we thought it
3:52might be you know something you know
3:54you're married to someone else obviously
3:55and so forth and that you may not want
3:57to you know talk about these things in
3:59that setting where someone you know we
4:00don't want the rumor mill or gossip or
4:01any of that kind of stuff it's fine i
4:03mean so we we did this just as as a
4:05means to try and speak to you in a
4:06confidential place where you you know
4:08where where your business isn't out
4:10there for other people in your division
4:13know god that's been a million years ago
4:14i mean
4:15you know um
4:18what year is it now 2009 i mean i
4:21graduated in 82 82 yeah
4:24um
4:26you know we dated um i dated other guys
4:29i'm sure he dated other girls um
4:32well let me ask you
4:34roughly how long would you would you say
4:36you guys did oh geez
4:38um
4:40i couldn't even say i mean
4:42i started school there in 78 i started
4:46ucla set in 1978
4:48i graduated in 82
4:50um i don't even remember what year he
4:53graduated if it was a year or two before
4:55me okay um i think he was a little bit
4:57older than i was
4:59i mean you know i can't remember if he
5:00was born let's say i'm born in 60 1960 i
5:04don't know if he was born in 58 or 59 i
5:06mean i you know
5:07i mean i knew his parents i knew his
5:08sister his brother went to northridge
5:11um
5:14you know sister spent the night at my
5:16house before obviously i spent the night
5:18at his house before he probably spent
5:20the night at my house before
5:22you know i i yeah i don't
5:25well
5:26correct me if i'm wrong because from
5:27what you're telling me you guys dated
5:29while you were in college together right
5:31yeah and probably after college um i'm
5:34i can't
5:36jeez um trying to think when i met my
5:38husband i met my husband
5:40in
5:41scott um
5:44let's see
5:45i was teaching dare because i met scott
5:47when i was teaching deer up in oregon
5:49but
5:50we had long stopped you know
5:52dating before that so you haven't talked
5:54to him for a long time oh i i think i
5:57haven't talked to him in a long time um
5:59i couldn't even tell you when the last
6:00time i talked to him
6:01um
6:02i met scott i'm thinking in
6:0592 maybe um april of 92
6:09it was scott being your husband yeah i'm
6:10trying to think i was teaching dare
6:14let's see what year is this
6:16we'll be married
6:17i got married in 1996 i think i met
6:19scott in 92
6:21prior to that i couldn't tell you how
6:22long i had talked you know talked to
6:25john
6:26prior to that but since you since you
6:28met your husband scott you haven't
6:29talked to him
6:31i mean he may have called me
6:33uh once or twice before we got married
6:36right um
6:37you know
6:39geez i i lived i moved to see me
6:42in 1994 because i lost my house in the
6:44earthquake
6:47quite honestly i probably keep in
6:48contact with
6:50a few people from the dorms we we all
6:52we've all lived on the tenth floor
6:54um
6:55and
6:56um
6:58there's
7:02about three or four people i keep in
7:04contact with there's probably like six
7:06or eight of us that were all really
7:07close and who are those people
7:10oh geez um
7:12diana basta
7:14um
7:15the people i still keep i i haven't been
7:17in contact with her in a long time
7:19um
7:20i mean
7:22what's uh what's i mean what's this all
7:24about i mean well let me ask you
7:26what did the relationship between you
7:28and john
7:30you know i don't
7:31it was kind of a weird relationship i
7:33mean we we we dated um i can't say that
7:37he was my boyfriend i don't know that he
7:38would have considered me his girlfriend
7:41um we just we dated we did things i
7:43played sports in college he played
7:44basketball
7:46his brother played basketball um
7:49we just
7:50you know it just
7:53didn't work out i mean i don't know what
7:55to tell you it was like i went out with
7:56other guys um
7:58saw the guys i went on lots of vacations
8:01um you know
8:03and once you guys split were you guys
8:05still friends or kind of
8:07you know
8:10friendly not friendly no i don't think
8:12it was not friendly i mean we were
8:13friendly um
8:15i know that
8:17we went to hawaii
8:19um at one point
8:21um another friend of mine who's actually
8:23dying right now uh was went to hawaii
8:27with us um at some point
8:29um remember roughly when that was oh
8:31geez um
8:34let me think
8:36um
8:37i have to check my pictures um or i'd
8:39say i'd ask greg but my friend greg is
8:41like dying of liver cancer right now um
8:45yeah i mean i you know
8:47and you were saying that um
8:49it's 2009 now had you ever met his wife
8:53i may have do you know do you remember
8:55her name or anything or
8:58um
9:01um
9:03or what she did for a living or where
9:05she worked or anything about her well i
9:08think she i'm going to say that i think
9:09she was a nurse
9:11um
9:14and i can't even remember how he said he
9:15met her
9:16uh yeah i mean i i yeah i mean it's been
9:19so long ago well let me ask you did you
9:20go to their wedding you know no i didn't
9:23go to their wedding
9:24um no i don't did not go to their
9:26wedding
9:27um
9:29i couldn't even tell you what year you
9:30got married i mean you know it's been a
9:32million years ago you remember if you
9:34ever talk to her because it seems like a
9:35lot of you who were
9:36at the school at ucla you guys kind of
9:39were friends during and after school so
9:41i don't know if you guys still
9:42associated afterwards when once he was
9:44married or anything
9:45with him yeah
9:47no i don't think so i mean
9:50i would say
9:52you know
9:53the the people that were on the dorm
9:54floor we'd have we did get togethers
9:58um there's probably like four or five i
10:00don't think he ever came
10:02um
10:03yeah i don't think no it was there was
10:04like it was mostly girls
10:07you know
10:08um a girl named smita
10:10diane um
10:12there's enough there's two dianes but
10:14the one diana i don't think she ever
10:16came i kind of lost contact with her we
10:18were good friends on the floor
10:20um
10:21yeah i mean i don't
10:22you know again i mean what
10:25you know i don't understand why you're
10:27talking about some guy dated a million
10:28years ago well do you know what happened
10:30to his wife yeah i know she got killed
10:33what did you hear about that
10:35i guess i saw a poster at work um
10:38i'm sure i spoke to him about it
10:40um
10:42i think i spoke to another friend of his
10:44about it um
10:46and how did how did you first learn
10:47about that
10:49jeez
10:52someone could have called me i could
10:53heard it at work
10:54um
10:56i think at one point there may have been
10:58a flyer or something i know a good
11:00friend of his were you on the job back
11:01then when that happened
11:03yeah i think so yeah i'm sure i was on
11:05the job that's why i would have heard
11:06about it with the flyer um
11:08he had a good friend mike
11:10mike
11:11baldrick mike
11:15um
11:18anyways
11:19he may have lived in the dorms i don't
11:21remember if that's how i met him um i i
11:24may have talked to him i mean
11:26you know i don't remember how i heard i
11:27mean i don't even remember what year it
11:29was and you think you thought you said
11:31you thought his wife was a nurse you
11:32have any idea where she was working at
11:33the time or
11:35did he ever mention that to you
11:36was it a hospital or a doctor's office
11:38i'm sure you must have mentioned it now
11:40now that you're bringing that up i think
11:42she worked at a hospital somewhere and
11:44yeah i may have met her at a hospital um
11:47i may have talked to her once or twice
11:49um
11:52or more
11:52um
11:54you know being that you're kind of
11:56used to see uh
11:58john
11:59you know was it everything okay between
12:01you guys i mean there wasn't every
12:02anything uncomfortable or anything
12:03between you and her
12:05um
12:07you know
12:08i don't know i mean it's god it's been
12:10so many years i mean
12:12uncomfortable i mean
12:16i can't even i can't even remember if we
12:18had a conversation i mean we may have i
12:21may have i may have seen her at his
12:23apart you know
12:25geez how many years ago is that i don't
12:27even know what year she you know got
12:29killed where was his apartment
12:31on roscoe okay yeah roscoe and um
12:35um
12:37east or west of de so uh either east or
12:40west of de soto
12:42do you know where he moved after did he
12:43move after he got married or do you know
12:45or
12:48oh
12:50i'm sure he did did you know where he
12:52was living or
12:54somewhere in the valley
12:56did you ever visit him and his wife
12:59no no never went out you know get
13:01together dinners
13:03oh no like i said his sister used to
13:07come over his sister had come to my
13:10place i knew her i knew his brother
13:12because his brother played basketball at
13:13northridge um in fact i was just coming
13:16across some pictures that i just can't
13:19scanned from um
13:21i take a lot of photos
13:23um like ten thousand
13:25and i just did a service where i scanned
13:28everything
13:29i mean i'd seen some pictures of his
13:30brother playing well you just put them
13:31all on your computer so you could have
13:33them accessible
13:34well my partner is a big photo thing and
13:37he had a deal to scan
13:39so i
13:40spent a ton of time just scanning photos
13:43i mean i paid a company to do it
13:45um so i've got photos of i mean his
13:47brother his sister you know 10 000
13:50pictures oh yeah how long did that take
13:52them
13:53months
13:55now what do they do they put that on a
13:57i'm just curious myself can they put it
13:58on it they get that all in one dvd they
14:00don't need like a hard drive or anything
14:02no no there's like
14:03i think 11 dvds
14:05yeah i haven't i don't even have time
14:07it's a series of dvds that they put them
14:09on oh yeah oh okay yeah i mean i'm not
14:11that familiar with computer stuff so
14:12that's why i was asking it's like 11
14:14dvds oh okay so you know um i haven't
14:18had a chance to go through them i
14:20you could go through and pick which ones
14:21you don't want i don't have time to do
14:23that right you know so i saw like you
14:25said did i you know
14:26i i don't think we ever socialized um
14:30you know uh he'd still call me um i
14:33can't say that i would i mean if he's
14:34married i don't know that i would have
14:35called him i mean maybe who knows i you
14:38know i don't know it's been a million
14:39years ago how long was john married
14:42before his wife died i couldn't i have
14:44no idea
14:45you have no idea
14:46and uh
14:48after his wife died did did you talk to
14:51him again or anything yeah i mean i did
14:53talk to him
14:55i talked to him probably his parents um
14:58probably some other friends
15:00um
15:01you know
15:03i'm sure i talked to him yeah um
15:06but you you don't you're not sure where
15:08he moved to after he got married
15:10no idea i never went over to visit him
15:13or i don't think i mean i don't think so
15:15i mean

15:22i mean i know he lived on roscoe for a
15:23long long time
15:25um
15:29i mean he i may know i mean he may have
15:31told me where they lived somewhere in
15:33the valley i mean he may have said i've
15:35lived over such and such but i i
15:37couldn't tell you
15:38specifically where but you don't
15:40remember specifically ever going over to
15:41visit him or visit them and where
15:43wherever he moved when he left roscoe
15:45i i honestly i don't know i don't think
15:48so but okay you know
15:50i don't want to say no i don't think so
15:52and then he says oh yeah she came over
15:53for something drop something off
15:56you know
15:57um i don't know so if you did go over
15:59there just be like a a quick thing like
16:01like you're saying drop something off or
16:03maybe um
16:05but you don't remember as far as like
16:07going there to have dinner or like a
16:09social anything at the house party
16:12well if you guys know something i i just
16:14i can't i don't know i don't think so
16:17i mean but
16:19after uh
16:20john's wife died and he said you may
16:23have been talking to him did your
16:25relationship
16:26start up again
16:28i would say no
16:30um
16:31again can you give me a year i mean this
16:34is like 2009. she died in 1986 yeah i
16:38think it was 86 1986. okay um
16:42like i said i'm i'm faintly remembering
16:45that
16:46um i went to hawaii
16:49with my friend greg greg and i got
16:51certified scuba diving
16:53um
16:54and i'm thinking that john met us there
16:57meaning greg and i
16:58um
17:01that could have been
17:03i got certified
17:06toward the end of
17:0788 or i mean 20 at 88.89
17:11um
17:13because i got recertified again and it
17:16had been like over
17:1810 10 years so i got re-certified my
17:21husband i got re-certified
17:23um
17:25and i'm pretty sure
17:27that john met us there
17:30again i have to tell you what year was i
17:32have to look at my pictures
17:34um
17:35you know
17:37and other than that i can't even say he
17:40may have called me
17:41you know my home um i may have called
17:44him
17:45um i don't think
17:47he got together with our group
17:49um i don't think after his wife's
17:51destined uh even before i don't
17:55you know
17:56we went to weddings together you know
17:59did you i got pictures i like i said i
18:01couldn't tell you years it's been a
18:03million years ago after he after he got
18:07uh married or whatever were you dating
18:08anybody
18:10in particular
18:12and that was what
18:14i think he got married in around 85 86
18:16something like that
18:18were you seeing anyone seriously or
18:20god
18:22i couldn't say
18:23um
18:25geez i'm trying to think i mean
18:28you know i dated a fireman um
18:31what was his name mike arndt
18:33um and i'm trying to think was he lafd
18:36or he was lafd
18:39trying to think when i went
18:41i probably met mike i went to devonshire
18:44let's say i left hollywood in 80 i
18:47worked hollywood 84
18:50to 85 i think
18:52and then i went to devonshire and that's
18:53when i met mike
18:55um
18:57and some other firemen
18:59and what the station next door no
19:01actually because i used to work
19:03hollywood so i just wonderful no no it
19:05was in when i worked devonshire i met
19:07mike oh okay all right and i'm trying to
19:10think i went to demonstrate 85
19:12and i'm thinking that
19:15i would have met him probably sometime
19:18shortly after i went to devonshire
19:20because i met him and his i actually met
19:22his buddies at a fire
19:24um
19:25and then
19:27mike and i dated
19:29you know just really kind of casually
19:32um
19:34and we remain very remain good friends
19:37um still in touch with him or
19:39unfortunately he passed away oh really
19:41he died in a um he had a car crash um
19:45he did uh race cars
19:47and um he went heading into a wall
19:51i couldn't tell you what year that was
19:53um
19:54but he passed away he was in a coma and
19:56they pulled the the plug right seems
19:58like
19:59uh anyway um
20:01so
20:03you know
20:04i couldn't even tell you what what year
20:06i'm thinking i went to demonstrate 85
20:07and i know i met the guys because it was
20:09kind of a funny incident of how i met
20:11them and that's how i remember it was
20:13sometime probably 85 right
20:16um you know if you specifically i don't
20:18even know if they remember the other two
20:20are now
20:21married to somebody else because i kind
20:22of
20:24all three i mean did you kind of
20:25socialize like when you were out with
20:26mike did those guys come out with you
20:28too was it kind of like did you do stuff
20:30with his friends well um there were
20:32three there was two firemen eric and
20:34gary
20:35um i met them first
20:37then they introduced me to mike
20:39so that's how i met mike and my dated
20:41mike and i dated
20:42so um
20:44and not i wouldn't even say i couldn't
20:46even tell you for how long because then
20:47it would say we decided you know i
20:49wasn't working out and
20:50we'd be better friends and
20:53you know he introduced me i think
20:55to some other guy on that who now is on
20:57lapd
20:58um
21:00uh
21:02randy cordobus
21:04um
21:06he's a detective he's got a twin brother
21:08who's on the fire department that's how
21:09i met randy
21:11um because he had a twin brother
21:14identical twin on the fire department
21:16okay um
21:17and
21:18anyway
21:19i dated him
21:21when i couldn't tell you it was before
21:22he came on the job
21:25before randy came on the job yeah oh
21:26okay and that was
21:29um
21:30i thought
21:31i'm trying to remember
21:33if mike
21:34mike may have
21:37i'm trying to remember
21:39mike may have dated um
21:42a girl that he dated
21:44oh that sounds too weird
21:46um
21:48randy may have dated
21:50a gal that mike was dating
21:52and that and then mike
21:54randy broke up with that gal
21:56i couldn't even tell you the gal's name
21:58if i'm even thinking of the story right
22:00and then i started dating randy
22:04i you know so again i mean
22:07not like i was a huge floozy or anything
22:09but no but you know i mean a lot of
22:12times right at least from my female
22:14partners that i've had you know it's
22:15hard dating
22:16guys that aren't involved in kind of our
22:18circle right because some a lot some
22:20guys are intimidated by you know women
22:22police officers and yeah randy was like
22:24an engineer at the time uh he was like a
22:26some kind of an engineer on a truck on a
22:28rig on a fire no no um an engineer um a
22:31professional engineer yeah i think he
22:33lost a job and then came on on the
22:35department i see so
22:37um
22:38getting back to some stuff as far as you
22:40recall after john's wife died
22:44did you start a relationship again with
22:46with john or
22:48dating casually or anything like that
22:51like i said
22:53he met greg and i in hawaii okay
22:56um
22:59that was something you guys kind of
23:00planned together like go as a group or
23:02you ran into him no i i think that
23:06obviously i must have talked to him
23:08and i said hey i'm going to hawaii with
23:11my buddy greg we're school or we're
23:13scuba we just got certified scuba diving
23:16um
23:17uh we're going to be in hawaii hey if
23:19you want to come and join us come join
23:20us right and i i think that's what it
23:22was um
23:24i met i may have asked some other people
23:26to as well
23:27um
23:28you know
23:29uh what island did we go to
23:33i think the big island in kauai
23:35he either met us on the big island or
23:37kauai i'm thinking of
23:40greg and i might have scuba dived a lot
23:42in the big island
23:43as well as kauai i'm i i don't remember
23:46which island again i'd have to look at
23:47my pictures
23:49i traveled a lot
23:51on my vacations i mean i was always gone
23:53for at least a month
23:55um
23:57and i would go places and i would either
23:59run into people or you know
24:01you know meet people
24:03um
24:04and
24:05greg
24:06this great we're talking about he was
24:09like someone you were dating or just a
24:11buddy no you know what i would i would
24:13say
24:14we started out um
24:17probably just buddies
24:18um
24:19and either i was with somebody or he was
24:22with somebody but it was all it was kind
24:24of like we ended up just kind of being
24:25like brother and sister
24:27um
24:28and maybe he wanted something more but
24:30um
24:31you know it just it never you know
24:34worked out but we we did things together
24:36um you know i consider them i've
24:39probably known them
24:42let's say i've been on the job almost 26
24:44years
24:45i've probably known growing 23 24 years
24:48um does he still talk to him
24:50oh yeah he's dying liver cancer right
24:52now yeah i'm sorry yes so
24:54um so you know i i consider him a good
24:58friend
24:59you know
25:00um
25:04you know i don't know what to tell you
25:05on that um i mean when when you heard
25:07about uh
25:09john's wife being killed i mean what was
25:11your what was your reaction i mean when
25:12did you thought you heard about what
25:14through a friend or a bulletin a friend
25:17or a bulletin um i obviously i mean i
25:19called they called the family
25:21um i i called maybe some of his friends
25:24that that that i knew and i mean
25:25obviously it shocked your fear if i
25:27heard it at work
25:28you know um which i may have i faintly
25:30remember a bulletin going around
25:33um
25:34either that or somebody called me i i
25:36also don't remember right um
25:39and then i called probably called his
25:40family um called uh
25:44i
25:44don't know initially
25:46i can't see if i initially spoke to him
25:48or not i honestly don't remember
25:50i may have said to somebody hey have him
25:52call me if he wants to talk
25:55and then he may have done that
25:56um
25:58you know
26:01do you know what the circumstances worse
26:03regarding her death
26:07geez let me think back um
26:11jeez
26:13i don't know if it was you know if it
26:14was a burglary or something
26:16uh yeah it's i mean it's been so many
26:18years i i mean i can faintly
26:21think that i may have saw a flyer
26:23may have had her picture on it
26:25you know i mean
26:27that's why i say if somebody had called
26:29me
26:30i may not have known what her last name
26:32was i may have i mean maybe if you told
26:35me i would remember it um
26:39shelly
26:40um
26:41sherry
26:43i know something maybe you know
26:46like i said it's been so many years and
26:48um
26:49from all the years as far as you can
26:51remember you don't you remember ever
26:53talking to her just
26:55well she i said earlier you know i mean
26:59i may have you know i may have talked to
27:01her um
27:03it sounds i you know
27:05you mentioned a hospital maybe you may
27:07have talked to her at a hospital
27:09yeah um
27:11yeah i may have
27:12you know i'm i'm thinking back now you
27:14guys are bringing up all these whole
27:15memories no i kind of dust off the cup
27:17you know i'm the geez
27:19um
27:22i'm thinking that
27:25because i mean we would date he would
27:26date other people i would date other
27:28people
27:29and i think you know
27:33at one point i mean he may have been
27:35dating her or i don't know maybe he was
27:38married i don't even remember
27:40and i'm like you know what why are you
27:42calling me if
27:43you're either dating her living with her
27:45married her i because i honestly don't
27:47remember the time frame
27:48um and i'm like come on knock it off and
27:50i'm and now i'm thinking i put me i may
27:52have gone to and say hey you know what
27:54you know what is he dating you he's but
27:56he's bothering me
27:58um and so i'm thinking that we had a
27:59conversation about that um
28:02one or two maybe i i you know i it could
28:06have been three i don't want to say i
28:07had three conversations with her like i
28:09didn't go to work or
28:10at their at their house or no i'm
28:13thinking that i'm you know he obviously
28:15must have told me where she worked i'm
28:17thinking it was a hospital somewhere
28:19in l.a and i just i mean i could have
28:22been
28:23again what year was that where was i
28:24working
28:26um
28:32you know i don't i don't i'm trying to
28:34think of where
28:36you when did you say they got married
28:38i don't know i think it was like
28:40in 85 or 86 or something like that yeah
28:44we we
28:45just kind of picked this up we you know
28:47don't know a lot about it
28:55i mean i could have been working in
28:57hollywood it sounds like if if that's
28:59where i was working
29:00um
29:01so i could have said okay well you know
29:03and i wouldn't talk to her
29:04um and just said hey you know what

29:30when scott moved in with me in 1993
29:35sometime in 93 because i met scott
29:37in
29:38in in april 92 i was teaching deer up in
29:42oregon
29:43um
29:44and
29:47um
29:48he moved down in fact he may have moved
29:51down in 92.
29:5392 or 93 there was a big earthquake no
29:55when was a big earthquake
29:57no 94 94 yeah so
30:01i think scott might have moved into 93
30:03sometime in 93.

30:16and so i faintly recall that john may
30:19have called a few times and i'm like hey

30:22i've got he goes look can you i'd like
30:24you can you talk or something like you
30:26know no i can't talk i've got you know
30:27i'm living with somebody right you know
30:29and then that could have been a few
30:30times it could have been once could have
30:32been twice could have three times yeah i
30:34don't know you know um that's during the
30:36period of time of the earthquake that
30:38you're well no probably probably after
30:40scott moved in i think i met scott april
30:42of 92 oh okay right before
30:45april of 92 because i was t i stopped
30:47teaching dare
30:54i think i stopped teaching here sometime
30:56in 92.
30:57um
31:00and when you and when you say that you
31:02may have
31:03um you know that you talked to his wife
31:05said hey or you know i don't know if it
31:07was i guess it wasn't his wife at that
31:08time girlfriend or whatever and yeah i
31:09don't know if it was his wife or i i
31:11mean quite honestly i don't even
31:12remember when you said like hey you know
31:14he's calling me he needs to knock it off
31:15or what have you i mean was that was
31:17that civil was there i mean oh no there
31:18was not i don't think there was anything
31:20it was if the conversation lasted uh uh
31:22a few minutes i can't even remember and
31:24what is it like you know we went out to
31:25lunch or anything right but there was no
31:27like arguments or fights or you didn't
31:29get heated or anything like that i
31:31recall no i mean
31:33i would think that would stand out i
31:34would think now again that's not
31:36standing out in my mind um
31:39you know
31:42so you didn't have any problems with her
31:43then you didn't have any issues with her
31:45no i mean but let me let me ask you
31:48it seems like you didn't have any issue
31:50now did she have an issue with you as
31:52far as because now you're telling her
31:54hey you know how to stop calling that
31:56you know she's like
31:57you know she figured she'd be thrilled
31:59by you
32:00you know i've
32:01i don't know i mean
32:03from what you remember as far as when
32:04you talk to her maybe you didn't take it
32:07as serious but maybe you know did she
32:09if she was bothering me like was she
32:10throwing things at me or something or
32:12not just you know as far as
32:14you're trying to explain like hey i'm
32:15stop calling me you know stop playing
32:17games you know i tell you
32:20if the conversation i couldn't even tell
32:21you how long the conversation if you
32:23said did it last a half an hour did it
32:24last three minutes to the last 20
32:26minutes i can't even remember it's been
32:28so long ago you know um you just
32:31remember talking to her telling you and
32:32that's why you said how many times you
32:33talked to her i don't know how many
32:34times i talked to her maybe it was once
32:36maybe it was twice maybe three times you
32:38know i i honestly don't know um i don't
32:41know what year it was um
32:44if you if he said i met her in such and
32:46such a year i'd go okay well i don't
32:48even know what year you met her um
32:51i graduated from uc in 1982
32:54okay
32:55i graduated 82
32:57like i said i don't know if he graduated
32:59i know he was a little older than i was
33:02so i don't know if he graduated a year
33:03before or two years before because
33:05people are on different
33:06um either on the four-year program or
33:08the five-year program um where did you
33:11come on the job

33:15after you got out of school
33:18yeah i worked at a law firm for a year
33:20um
33:22and then came on the job but in any way
33:25in regards to seeing him not seeing him
33:28we went to friends weddings that were

33:34friends weddings from where he worked
33:37um he may have gone to things with me
33:39you know
33:40um
33:43you know i mean i i don't know how many
33:45times we went to do things you know
33:47or didn't do things right like i said
33:50his sister
33:53i know his sister
33:55his brother his sister i know stayed at
33:57my town house
33:59a number of times i couldn't tell you
34:01how many times right
34:04i would watch his brother you know i
34:06should uh take pictures at a basketball
34:08game or two where was your townhouse at
34:10in granada hills
34:12um below the odyssey
34:15i don't know
34:16oh i'm sorry the 405 and the five um the
34:18four or five the four or five turns into
34:21the five the 118
34:22um they they came down in the earthquake
34:25okay so okay
34:28and you're saying
34:29when you went to see her
34:31do you remember phil's at her house or
34:35at the place she worked at
34:38no i'm thinking that i'm thinking it was
34:40probably
34:42for some reason i want to say that the
34:44hospital seemed
34:45that you know if you say he got married
34:47in
34:4885 or something i'm thinking that you
34:51know maybe the hospital was on my way to
34:53work in hollywood i mean that's kind of
34:55sounding familiar
34:57um
34:59would you have gone on duty
35:01oh i know i'm sure i wouldn't if i no
35:03i'm i'm pretty good about not doing
35:05stuff
35:06you know i mean now i'm not saying that
35:08you know you haven't done stuff on duty
35:10but i i would have i mean i would have
35:12been working with somebody okay you know
35:14so i wouldn't i wouldn't think i mean i
35:17try to avoid doing stuff on duty
35:19so
35:20so you would have gone feels enroute to
35:22work you more likely would have gone to
35:24her work and had this discussion with
35:26her i mean that's sounding familiar i
35:29mean that's now that you guys are
35:30bringing this stuff up um
35:32i mean it sound that sounds familiar um
35:34but again i mean you know
35:38what's i mean what's this got to do with
35:39me dating him and you know her getting
35:41killed i mean i i don't you know i don't
35:44have anything to do with it and
35:46you got something that's somebody said
35:48you know whatever i mean well like we
35:50said we just literally got this the
35:52other day and and you're going through
35:54it yeah and you see
35:56nick's next door right and so you know i
35:58mean obviously it's like we recognize
36:00the name we know that you know you work
36:01next door to us and so we're trying to
36:03get some background we're trying to
36:04figure this out i mean this is from a
36:05long time ago oh i know you know and and
36:07things have been kind of slow for us and
36:09so you know chief beck has said hey you
36:11know i want you guys working i don't
36:12want you just sitting around reading the
36:13paper yeah so he's kind of pushing some
36:16older cases out even to the guys that
36:17work active cases because you know and
36:19so we see this and we're just like oh
36:20you know we want to talk to you about it
36:21but of course the only reason we did it
36:23here is because we're getting into some
36:24pretty personal stuff in your
36:25relationship
36:27my husband's on the job
36:29you know we don't want to take the risk
36:30we don't want to take the risk from one
36:31of those interview rooms with the door
36:32closed someone's going to get supplies
36:34and see us on a monitor here's or
36:35whatever i appreciate it i mean
36:37like i said that's where people go when
36:38there's orals you know when they're
36:39doing orals you guys will go in there
36:40and try and watch like what are the
36:41answers to the questions you know that
36:43yeah so so we just we just want to
36:45afford you the most privacy and
36:46confidentiality we could i appreciate
36:48like i said i mean this goes way back
36:51and i mean it was very sad you know
36:53obviously um
36:56i i haven't i you know i
36:58when we were in college
37:00some of us would go down to his house in
37:02san diego i went down to his house with
37:04him
37:05you know
37:06with him i know i i'm trying to think of
37:08some other people that may have gone
37:09down is that where he grew up is down
37:11there yeah down in san diego oh okay i
37:13know his dad was a professor at san
37:15diego state i don't know if he still is
37:18um
37:19i don't know what happened to his sister
37:20don't know what happened to his brother
37:22um
37:24you know i'm sure his dad's probably
37:25retired by now
37:27he was i think older
37:30even back then right
37:33and i
37:34i can't even tell you the last time i
37:35had any contact with any of them it's
37:37been so long did he tell you what
37:39happened like what he heard from the
37:40detectives or the police or
37:44you know what he may have
37:46um
37:48for some reason i'm thinking that
37:51i mean again this is like
37:58drugs or something

38:07that she was involved with that you know
38:09i don't know that he said she was
38:10involved or they thought she you know

38:21remember even between him or the flyer
38:25that there was some kind of a burglary

38:31let me ask did the detectives ever reach

38:36think anybody ever talked to me about
38:37about him um it seems like you know well

39:24i would remember it because i worked van
39:26nuys for a while um

39:34when did i go to van nuys
39:36i worked devonshire until 88
39:39then i went to dare to 92
39:43i worked twice at van nuys
39:46detective
39:48yeah
39:52sometime in the 90s

39:58yeah i i know before i busted my leg up
40:01i was there in 98 because that year
40:04sticks out because i had a really bad
40:05leg injury
40:06um
40:08and i was there prior to that but i
40:10couldn't tell you what year it was just
40:12a few years i made detective i think in
40:1493
40:1793
40:18so um
40:20i was at van nuys
40:22and then i went back and then i had a
40:24leg injury and then they transferred me
40:25to demonstrate because i couldn't drive
40:28i couldn't drive very far with the my
40:29bad leg injury
40:31so um
40:33but yeah i
40:34i think i talked to somebody
40:36um remember
40:38would you remember any other
40:39conversation as far as what they were
40:41looking for
40:43i couldn't say i mean they may have told
40:45me i said hey you know
40:47i went to school with him
40:49um i either somebody called me or i saw
40:51the fly i may have seen the flyer at
40:54that point and i called up if if
40:56someone's name was on the flyer i may
40:57have called to speak to them i said hey
40:59if there's anything i can do
41:01you know um
41:02call me this is where i work
41:04you know i went to uh you know
41:07school with them
41:08um
41:11i couldn't say i couldn't tell you who
41:12it was
41:14but you do remember that that someone
41:16you think reached out to you
41:18you mean a detective yeah called you up
41:20and talked to you or i called them one
41:23of the two but yeah
41:25you know i remember talking to somebody
41:27but
41:29i'm thinking it was a man
41:32i'm sure there's probably more men back
41:33then
41:36um
41:37so again that's
41:39i mean that's not really all i can
41:41remember about that yeah

41:47as far as when you said that uh
41:50john was calling you to to see you and
41:52during that time you felt that he was
41:55felt he was either seeing her was he
41:56engaged or married did you know
41:59couldn't say i remember you
42:06no that would have been
42:08scott moved into 93
42:11so that would have been you said 86 or
42:1385 or something scott's your only
42:14husband you've never been married no
42:16i've never been i got married in i think
42:1896 when i i know i got married in 96 but
42:21he moved in in 93.
42:24but uh
42:25during that time that you were seeing
42:27john
42:27uh you know was he acting kind of you
42:30know kind of squirrelly or kind of
42:31sneaking around when he'd hook up with
42:33you or anything like that
42:35to make you think hey yeah it probably
42:37was i mean
42:39i mean because from the impression i get
42:40it you've known him a long time
42:42well let's see
42:44i met him in 78. no i i met him in
42:47school i started ucl in 78.
42:49um so you know him well
42:52during that period of time yeah i mean
42:55was he acting squirrely
42:58you know
42:59i don't even remember where he was
43:00living then
43:02you know i
43:03well i know well let me ask you after he
43:06hooked up with uh he was living on
43:08roscoe or wherever else he was living
43:10right well after he hooked up with uh
43:13with sherry
43:14do you know uh where they were living
43:17no you asked me that already
43:19and i said well obviously they were
43:20living in van nuys division
43:25i may have known
43:26i mean i you know again i
43:28you know did he ever give me the address
43:31maybe
43:32you know i don't remember i mean i don't
43:34know
43:36because the only reason i'm asking you
43:37again is because we've been talking i
43:39know some stuff has come to you because
43:40you're like oh
43:41you know
43:42so
43:43that's why i'm asking if you've ever
43:44been to the house and when you said van
43:46eyes division
43:49you know

43:55i'm sure he could have told me i mean he
43:56could have told me he could have told me
43:57where he lived um
44:02do you ever have gone there
44:04i don't think i've ever gone there i'm
44:06saying i don't i don't want to say no
44:08i've never gone there and then you say
44:09oh i was at a party
44:11because i i i don't you know i don't
44:14think so yeah um like i said we've got
44:17these friends we have different we have
44:18parties

44:21my house their house
44:23i i just don't think john ever came to
44:27again you know at one point because
44:29we we knew people from school together
44:32i knew different people he knew
44:34different people i knew people that he
44:36knew from his work um
44:38you know that lived in the valley
44:40um
44:42you know
44:44so as far as for social events or
44:46anything i mean
44:47it's
44:49i mean you're not sure if you've ever
44:50been to the house because
44:56but it's safe to say that would have
44:57been the only time like for something
44:58social
45:00yeah if i went there for something
45:02social yeah i mean because i know you
45:04you went to talk to her
45:06at the hospital
45:08uh regarding this issue with john
45:11to you know kind of like hey you know
45:13what's going to happen here with this
45:14thing
45:15but would this ever have followed up to
45:17her house when you went to talk to her
45:18to say hey you know what i
45:20i don't even know that i knew where they
45:22lived i you know that's what i'm saying
45:24i don't
45:25if i knew where they lived and i'd been
45:27there if it was for something social
45:29i'd i would i'm
45:31and i can't see how many times i i saw
45:33her face-to-face
45:34you know he lived on roscoe did i ever
45:36see her there
45:37i don't know i mean
45:39i may have seen her at his apartment on
45:40roscoe
45:42i may have met her there
45:45you know i mean
45:47but you didn't have any issues with her
45:48right
45:50no i mean
45:51you know obviously if he was dating me
45:53and dating her i probably said hey pick
45:55or something you know you know back then
45:58um
46:00i can't say that we
46:02ever screamed or yeah you know it's
46:04i mean he was a pretty mellow guy

46:11don't think we had some big huge blow up
46:13to say
46:14you know why we stopped dating or you

46:17and i even think that when i was dating
46:18him i was probably like i said i was
46:20probably going out with other guys and
46:22he was probably going out with other
46:24girls right you know i don't know
46:26i mean would you remember if she
46:28snapped on you and just like hey man
46:30it's my man you know you get leave him
46:31alone you know blah blah blah that kind
46:33of stuff
46:34you know
46:36and would you remember an incident like
46:37that i mean because that would be like
46:38what
46:39well you know and maybe that happened i
46:41mean
46:44gosh you know
46:46it's been so long ago i you know i just
46:49i mean that's not
46:50ringing a bell
46:52um because the times i've seen you
46:53around in our office i'm crazy
46:56but you're always kind of like real
46:59i mean you seem kind of bubbly oh i'm pr
47:01i'm you know people think i'm really
47:02hyper um but i can i mean i can get
47:06i can get upset you know and and then i
47:08forget five seconds later you know you
47:10know how guys rash you and you go
47:12ah you know um
47:14i mean i've done that in the office you
47:16know but it's like and then i'm you know
47:18and then i'm
47:20you know
47:21you know i mean water under the bridge
47:23yeah i mean it's like people think i'm
47:24crazy and then they think i'm crazy at
47:26home and i'm you know more i'm i'm a
47:28hyper person at work i'm you know i i
47:31enjoy my job i get excited i you know um
47:35i enjoy the job i've always enjoyed the
47:38job um you got a good gig so
47:41you know
47:42um so
47:43you know i
47:45i you know i don't know it's like like i
47:46said this stuff's been so long ago um
47:49you know i'm sure as soon as i walk out
47:51here i'll go oh shoot i did 25 things

47:58destination yeah i mean i i don't know
47:59what else you need to know like i said

48:04a lot of the friends that you know that
48:06we socialized in the dorms i would say i
48:08mean there was a group of us that
48:11um we were all really close i mean even
48:14this one guy was thinking of you know
48:16diana basta we were all really close i
48:19haven't talked to her in a million years

48:24john's or yeah we all lived on the dorms
48:26on the dorms together i don't know if
48:28she lived on the same we i'm trying to
48:30think i think i know john lived on
48:32arfler because his roommate was dave
48:34newman dave newman now is a big huge big
48:36shot

48:39movie producer director something i
48:41don't know um and that was john's
48:42roommate yeah and then the guys that
48:45lived across from me
48:47jim jaskell and
48:49roy
48:50suckaboo suckaboo something like that
48:53they lived across from me
48:55um diana basta
48:58i don't know if she lived on our floor
49:00maybe she was the r.a
49:02um
49:04diane sherman
49:06because i still remain friends with
49:07diane sherman
49:09not that i'm not friends with the other
49:10people i just don't see him um
49:13a girl named
49:14smita um

49:21you know so we were all on the floor i
49:24mean some of them were athletes some of
49:25them weren't you know i said john played
49:27basketball as brother played basketball
49:28i played basketball at ucla for two
49:30years
49:31um
49:32one of the girls swam on the team one
49:33was on the crew team so we all did stuff
49:35together um and then i'd say after we
49:38all graduated um we went to weddings you
49:40know i went to weddings um
49:43uh
49:44but sherry wasn't part of this circle
49:47no i don't even know how he how he met
49:49her i don't even know where i mean i
49:51don't know where he met her from i don't
49:52even know he told me where he met her
49:54from i mean he may have told me i
49:56you know that's not ringing a bell
49:58um
50:00and there was lots i mean you know
50:01there's
50:03there was other people that knew other
50:04people
50:05um you know that were friends of
50:07everybody's
50:09um

50:13um i mean i don't know what else to tell
50:14you well one of the concerns i have is
50:16looking at some of the notes is uh
50:19some of sherry's friends said that
50:22you and her were having a problem
50:24because of the john situation
50:30well
50:31number one i don't know who her friends

50:36recall if he did tell me where he met
50:38her i don't even who these friends are
50:41a problem
50:43like i said if i spoke to her
50:46i mean i'll go on as far as the lim and
50:48i don't want to say i spoke to her five
50:49times because that's probably
50:51not even true i i can't even remember um
50:55again did i meet him at her plate when
50:57he lived on roscoe for i think
50:59uh quite a while but i couldn't tell you
51:01how long he lived in roscoe and the only
51:02reason i remember the place now is
51:04because it's like a huge dope built
51:06place now where they you know it may
51:08have been back then but you know maybe
51:10we didn't know back then um
51:13i could have met her there i could have
51:14you know
51:17you know i don't even know that i met
51:20any of their friends
51:22i i i don't i i can't say that i don't
51:25know that that's a true statement well
51:27that's what i'm reading is that
51:28you guys have problems with each other
51:30and words are being exchanged and it's
51:32all relating to

51:45something if somebody's going off on you

52:35just going on even playing that just uh

52:42you're telling me is when you guys met
52:43at the hospital

52:48from what you recall confrontational
52:50from either side

1:00:26again if someone says that i was at her
1:00:28house and i had an incident with her
1:00:31i you know i that just doesn't sound i i

1:00:41i mean it just doesn't sound

1:00:44incident where you showed up
1:00:47you weren't supposed to show up

1:00:51things got heated
1:00:52at his house

1:02:25like a useful force at work or a car
1:02:28crash something you're involved in you'd
1:02:29be like you would think i would remember
1:02:31i mean i would think if it was something
1:02:33that crazy i mean i i can't say you say
1:02:36how many fights have you gotten into you

1:02:38in your life
1:02:40you know i mean a few at work well
1:02:43fights at work are kind of different
1:02:44because we've all had uses of force or
1:02:45whatever but why didn't you have even a
1:02:47lot of those right but you know if
1:02:49you're if you're actually you know i
1:02:50mean i played like if if dan and i got
1:02:52mad at each other and we threw blows in
1:02:54the squad room i mean 20 years later i
1:02:56would remember it i mean i would think i
1:02:57would remember it but that's that's what
1:02:59i'm saying that's not sounding familiar
1:03:01to me at all i mean
1:03:03let me ask you i mean throughout your
1:03:05life
1:03:08you know would you remember the number
1:03:09of fights you've been involved in
1:03:12and i don't mean kind of like a bump or
1:03:13something just a physical fight were you
1:03:17everybody's hitting each other
1:03:18scratching pulling and whatever
1:03:20maybe i mean i can't say i've been in a
1:03:22lot
1:03:23you know i played sports
1:03:25you know you get into scuffles there and
1:03:29and you recall some of those right let

1:03:32yeah i can recall some of them
1:03:34yeah games getting captured but like i
1:03:35said this you saying this this is just
1:03:37not ringing a bell i mean but you know
1:03:41i don't know what to tell you it's it's
1:03:42just that's just not ringing a bell to

1:05:15you've been doing this longer than i

1:05:19i get 26 years on
1:05:21going on 26th 19th so
1:05:24but
1:05:26you know as they processed everything
1:05:28they did the best they could at that
1:05:30time and they looked at a lot of a lot
1:05:31of people and different things in this
1:05:32case
1:05:33and you're right i mean if you guys are
1:05:35claiming that i'm a suspect then you
1:05:37know i i got a problem with you know
1:05:39with that okay okay
1:05:41so
1:05:42you know if you're if you're doing this
1:05:44as an interrogation you're saying hey
1:05:46i'm a suspect well now i got a problem
1:05:48with you know now you're accusing me of
1:05:50this
1:05:51is that what you're is that what you're

1:06:26for something that i didn't even do or
1:06:28you're saying i did something

1:06:32i mean how would you guys like it if the
1:06:34tables were turned on you i understand
1:06:36no um
1:06:37oh that's what we're telling you i mean
1:06:38you're free to go whenever you want if
1:06:39if this makes you uncomfortable and you
1:06:40want to get it now you're starting to
1:06:42make me uncomfortable
1:06:44the thing is i mean detectives did what
1:06:46they could at that time on the crime
1:06:47scene okay and the burglary thing you're
1:06:49talking about that is an angle that they
1:06:50looked at
1:06:51i go but now we're looking at everything
1:06:53else on the case because nobody was ever
1:06:55arrested on the case
1:06:56i i don't know that
1:06:58or not okay
1:07:00now what we'd like to do is
1:07:03obviously you know about all the dna
1:07:04stuff and things of the nature that you
1:07:06know
1:07:07gets done on cases nowadays you know if
1:07:09we asked you for a dna swab would you be
1:07:11willing to give us one
1:07:12maybe
1:07:14because now now
1:07:16now because now i'm thinking i probably
1:07:19need to talk to a lawyer
1:07:20okay i mean
1:07:22well i because i know how this stuff
1:07:24works okay don't get me wrong you're
1:07:25right i have been doing this a long time
1:07:27yeah and i wish i had been recording
1:07:28this because because now it sounds like
1:07:31you know there's
1:07:33you know you're selling these people
1:07:34saying i'm fighting with her and now it
1:07:36sounds like you're trying to you know
1:07:38i've been doing this a long time yeah

1:07:42you're trying to pin something on me now
1:07:44i got that sense well what it gets to on
1:07:46these on these cases and you know it as
1:07:47well as i do our job is to identify and
1:07:50eliminate i can't believe this so if we
1:07:52ask you to appoint to give us a dna
1:07:54sample a bugle swab so we can
1:07:58identify or eliminate you you should be
1:08:00willing to do that maybe
1:08:03because i know this i i i that's what
1:08:05we're at to i mean
1:08:06because
1:08:08right now
1:08:09from looking at the evidence it's you
1:08:10know it's possible we may have some dna
1:08:12at the location
1:08:13that's great and
1:08:16we're going to do what we can to try to
1:08:18put this thing together
1:08:19and your name's in the book these people
1:08:22are pointing at you for whatever reason
1:08:24i don't know why that's just crazy i
1:08:26mean that's just that's absolutely crazy
1:08:28and
1:08:30it would be irresponsible on our part
1:08:31not to look at it i know you guys have
1:08:33to do your job and i guess i'm gonna
1:08:35have to contact somebody so that's fair
1:08:37i mean
1:08:39because i know how this stuff works i

1:08:43i just can't believe it that's i mean we
1:08:45understand that i mean if we were in
1:08:46your position i mean we would feel the
1:08:48same way
