- 0:08A Double-Entry Journal is a writing strategy, that uses a simple two-column format.
- 0:15The Left Column of this journal is for the "Text".
- 0:18Such as:
- 0:20Details from the text
- 0:22Vocabulary
- 0:23Quotes
- 0:25What stands out, and important or difficult passages.
- 0:30The Right Column is for the "Response".
- 0:33Record interpretations
- 0:35Definitions
- 0:36Reactions
- 0:38And what sends out in the text?
- 0:41Why use a Double-Entry journal?
- 0:44It helps you keep track while you read.
- 0:47This allows you to:
- 0:49Keep track of what stands out
- 0:51React to Main Claims and arguments
- 0:55Identify significant passages
- 0:57Seek answers to your own questions
- 1:00Make personal connections to the reading
- 1:04How to create a Double-Entry Journal
- 1:08Divide your paper into two columns.
- 1:11Label the Left Column "Text".
- 1:13And the Right Column "Response".
- 1:16Here are some examples and options for the columns.

- 1:28In this example, we will review an article about Solar Energy..
- 1:33..and outline the passage using a Double-Entry Journal strategy.
- 1:38Let's first start with the Left Column "Text".
- 1:41For instance,
- 1:43"Solar Energy is the cleanest and most abundant renewable energy source available."
- 1:50In the Right Column, let's put our own response to that statement.
- 1:54For example,
- 1:56"Great that were not dependent on fossil fuels."
- 1:59Now let's use a quote.
- 2:02"The U.S. solar market faces both challenges and opportunities."
- 2:07The response can be a question you have.
- 2:10"Wonder what these challenges are?"
- 2:14Here is a term that might need a definition.
- 2:19Photovoltaics
- 2:24Finally, solar energy power can come from a
- 2:28central station plant or local plants.
- 2:31Response can be:
- 2:33"How do they choose "Local" versus "Central" ?"
- 2:38As we just practiced, using the Double-Entry Journal can help dive deeper into the subject matter.
