Steal Like a Video Editor (Never Run Out of Ideas) — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00You're editing your video, but then
- 0:01boom, a creative block. Well, today I'm
- 0:03showing you three steps on how to come
- 0:05up with ideas for your edit. And I don't
- 0:06think the problem is that you're not
- 0:08creative enough. You're just not
- 0:09stealing well. Because good artists
- 0:11copy, great artists steal. We'll get
- 0:12back to that later. Let's start out with
- 0:14step one, which is passive ideas. Maybe
- 0:16you're like most and you just wake up in
- 0:17the morning and you scroll through your
- 0:19reels and it's just Well, it
- 0:21is really in, out. Because if
- 0:23you're scrolling through brain rot the
- 0:25whole morning, then when you're going to
- 0:26edit during the day, you're probably not
- 0:28going to come up with a crazy good
- 0:30creative idea. So, to get creative
- 0:31ideas, you need to fix what you're
- 0:33consuming first. Now, you might think,
- 0:34"Tom, this is so boring. I need
- 0:36something right now." Well, I will go
- 0:38into active ideas later, but this is
- 0:40really important first. And there's
- 0:42actually a fix that will only take you 5
- 0:44minutes and I will show you. You see, I
- 0:45get a lot of my inspiration from
- 0:47Instagram. And what you can do is just
- 0:48create a burner account. This is
- 0:50basically just a new account, so you log
- 0:52out of your current account. You create
- 0:53a new account from scratch. Now, once
- 0:55you've created your account, you're just
- 0:57going to go to search and for example,
- 0:58search for cinematic edit. You'll find
- 1:01all of these cool reels and what you're
- 1:02going to do is you're just going to
- 1:03watch a few of them, interact with them,
- 1:05like them. And when you do this on a new
- 1:07account, you will just see this content.
- 1:10And you can do the same if you're into
- 1:12SAS edits. You can, of course, just
- 1:13search for SAS edits. And again, just
- 1:15clicking on a few of them, interacting
- 1:17with them. And that will make the
- 1:19algorithm work for you and just show you
- 1:21cool work. But what if your scrolling
- 1:23and you still see brain rot? Well, let's
- 1:24say you are on this burner account and
- 1:26you find a reel that you don't really
- 1:27like. You just go to the button under
- 1:29the sent and you hit not interested. And
- 1:31you can say doesn't match my interests
- 1:33and hit submit. And you can do the same
- 1:35thing for content that you do like, hit
- 1:37on that same button and then hit
- 1:38interested. And this is something really
- 1:40concrete, but you can also watch cool
- 1:42movies, watch movie posters, listen to
- 1:44inspirational music. A lot of these
- 1:46things I just mentioned, you don't think
- 1:48of straight away, but it really helps
- 1:50with your creativity. But that Instagram
- 1:51method works so well for me. I just use
- 1:53that in the morning so that later on
- 1:55when I'm editing, I can still come up
- 1:57with these ideas that are in my head
- 1:59because I can shoot them earlier. This
- 2:01of course doesn't help you if you have a
- 2:02deadline right now and you need ideas
- 2:04now. Well, for that I have another
- 2:06technique and I'm going to explain that
- 2:07in step two, active ideas. Now, for the
- 2:09active ideas we can go to Pinterest, we
- 2:11can go to Dribbble or we can also go to
- 2:13Save with double E. Now, you might know
- 2:15these websites already but a lot of
- 2:17people still mess it up. They use the
- 2:18wrong keywords because you need to
- 2:20search for elements. So, for example, if
- 2:22we want to make a UI animation, instead
- 2:24of searching for UI animation, we search
- 2:26for card because we need a card. And as
- 2:28you can see, there are some really cool
- 2:30designs here. I mean, this is
- 2:31specifically a credit card and if you
- 2:33click on it, of course the algorithm
- 2:34works really well. We see some examples
- 2:36that look amazing. Look at this stuff
- 2:39and also look at this. Now, I actually
- 2:41used this one for inspiration before.
- 2:42The example is now on the screen. You
- 2:44can see I stole the design but I didn't
- 2:45copy it. I didn't use it for a degree
- 2:48counter and there's a big mistake a lot
- 2:50of people make when they steal a design
- 2:51which I will go a bit into depth later.
- 2:53Now, Dribbble of course works in the
- 2:55same way. We can search for a card UI
- 2:58but we can also search for kinetic
- 3:00typography. As you can see, we have this
- 3:01really cool design where the words are
- 3:03on the side but maybe we can use that or
- 3:05this as well how this is laid out. This
- 3:07looks really, really cool as well. And
- 3:09what I always try to do is not look at
- 3:11motion too much because it's really easy
- 3:13to fall for the trap of literally
- 3:15copying it. So, ideally I just like to
- 3:18look at statics meaning there's no
- 3:20motion in it. And then lastly, we can
- 3:21also check Savee where we can just look
- 3:23for UI. There's a lot of cool stuff on
- 3:26here as well for card UI. Look how
- 3:28beautiful this looks. Now, as you can
- 3:30see, this is for a home monitoring and I
- 3:32think this is a perfect example that we
- 3:34can use for that word focus. We can just
- 3:36save this, same with the artwork that we
- 3:38had before and just put it all in one
- 3:40folder. It can be messy, it doesn't
- 3:42matter. And now that we saved our
- 3:43inspiration, I'm going to go to step
- 3:45three which is putting it all together.
- 3:46But before I do that, I want to tell you
- 3:48a quick story. You see that quote at the
- 3:49beginning, "Good artists copy, great
- 3:51artists steal" is by Pablo Picasso. He
- 3:53was an artist and he made some amazing
- 3:55artwork, but he was inspired by Paul
- 3:57Cézanne. And Paul Cézanne made artwork
- 3:59that included the Cubism style. And this
- 4:02was before the Cubism style was even a
- 4:04thing. But as you can see, Pablo Picasso
- 4:05used those elements in his artwork. Not
- 4:08only that, there was another artist
- 4:09called Georges Braque who was also using
- 4:12the same style in his artwork. And you
- 4:13can see the similarities if you look at
- 4:15the artwork like this or if you look at
- 4:17the artwork like this. They're not
- 4:18copies from each other, but instead
- 4:20they're inspired by each other. And
- 4:21they're a mix of different styles into
- 4:23this artwork. And that's the same thing
- 4:25with inspiration and it's also exactly
- 4:27what we're going to do now. I'm now here
- 4:28in After Effects and I have these two
- 4:29images imported. Now, let's say my
- 4:31client is a home monitoring software. It
- 4:34would be too easy to literally just copy
- 4:36this and that's not great. Like don't
- 4:38ever do that. But what we can do is turn
- 4:40this into a focus meter where this
- 4:43doesn't say home monitoring, but it says
- 4:45focus. And we can see the distractions
- 4:47that basically are influencing the
- 4:49focus. And instead of using this exact
- 4:51same style, let's use this style. So, I
- 4:54cooked up a quick card that is somewhat
- 4:56resembling the style of the inspiration
- 4:59that we had here, but in the same shape
- 5:01of the other inspiration that we had.
- 5:03And if you're interested, it's an
- 5:05adjustment layer with a deep glow and a
- 5:06noise, rounded rectangle with a stroke
- 5:09and a drop shadow that's being used as a
- 5:11matte by this pre-comp. And this
- 5:13pre-comp contains a cool gradient which
- 5:15I just created by adding some shapes
- 5:18together with different colors with a
- 5:20Gaussian blur. And then lastly, a
- 5:21duplicate of that rounded shape that we
- 5:23used as a matte, but this time it's just
- 5:26a stroke with a glow on it, without it
- 5:29and with it. Now, let's make the
- 5:30elements and let's look at our
- 5:31inspiration. And here's what a lot of
- 5:33people do wrong, they steal it in the
- 5:34wrong way. What I see so many times is
- 5:37people go to the text tool and they type
- 5:39here, for example, home monitoring. They
- 5:41use the wrong font in the wrong weight,
- 5:44way too big and then call it a day. And
- 5:46then they said, "Hey, I looked at this
- 5:47inspiration and I wanted to make it look
- 5:49a bit different." Yeah, you did make it
- 5:51look different. You made it look
- 5:53>> [laughter]
- 5:53>> And this was me when I started out as
- 5:55well. But there's a reason why this
- 5:56looks so good. This font is nice and
- 5:58modern and thin and then the subtitle is
- 6:00a bit darker. You see this time and time
- 6:02again with a lot of designs that you
- 6:04see. This font size is nice and small.
- 6:06It's not taking over the whole space and
- 6:08there's a reason for that. So let's see
- 6:09if we can get that the same way without
- 6:11looking at that design. Just going to go
- 6:12for a simple modern font, San Francisco
- 6:14Pro. But you can also go for Montserrat,
- 6:16Lato, Touche. And let's make it regular
- 6:18or maybe even light. Make the font size
- 6:20nice and small. And now let's change
- 6:22this word to focus. Change the fill so
- 6:24it's a bit less light and this already
- 6:26looks so much better, right? And then we
- 6:28can do a subtitle, my focus throughout
- 6:31the day. Let's make that a bit smaller
- 6:33and also a bit darker. Now let me add
- 6:34the other elements. Now I added a few
- 6:36more elements, so five edits then two
- 6:38reels with the progress bar. Now of
- 6:39course this is really specific with a UI
- 6:42design and a UI animation. However, this
- 6:44applies the same with a storytelling
- 6:46edit. You take a transition from that
- 6:48person, you take some colors from that
- 6:50person, you add the grain, you add the
- 6:52border, you find that specific song in a
- 6:54cinematic edit and you put it all
- 6:56together. Now if you want to learn even
- 6:57more about this then join the Fullstack
- 6:59Editor Club. Cuz in here with every deep
- 7:01dive I go through the ideation process
- 7:03and show you exactly how I come up with
- 7:05my ideas. There's also a get a client
