- 0:00Forget personal curriculums, you need to
- 0:01start a research journal and here are
- 0:03five prompts to get you started. Every
- 0:05morning you're going to start with a
- 0:06free write. Three to five minutes on
- 0:07your research and I want you to start
- 0:09with what is exciting me today? What do
- 0:11I wish to explore? What am I looking
- 0:13forward to? Number two is actually
- 0:15creating a mind map. Create bubbles,
- 0:18lines, make connections in order to get
- 0:20all of your messy ideas out onto the
- 0:22page. Number three, a structured reading
- 0:25report. This is going to go over the
- 0:27main argument, supporting argument,
- 0:29evidence, literature review and your own
- 0:32ideas when reading an article or book.
- 0:34The fourth is timelines. You can go
- 0:37ahead and write out the different days
- 0:39that events occurred in a book. You can
- 0:41also write out timelines as they relate
- 0:42to a historical subject. And the fifth
- 0:45is a character study. Whether you're
- 0:47studying non-fiction or fiction, I want
- 0:49you to write out all of the subjects
- 0:51that you encounter, whether that's in a
- 0:52book or in an archival record and I want
- 0:54you to describe them.
- 0:56Talk about their motivations, what it is
- 0:58it that you observe about them and any
- 1:00quotes that you find interesting.
- 1:02There are so many things that you can do
- 1:03with a research journal and this is just
- 1:05the start. This is my PhD dissertation
- 1:08diary from Paper Republic. This is where
- 1:10I write down all of my big, messy ideas.
- 1:13I outline my chapters, I outline my
- 1:15entire dissertation. Everything related
- 1:17to my PhD lives in this little physical
- 1:19archive. Leave the comment Paper
