  2. 0:10in around 1895 a young demure and simple
  3. 0:14nun living in a carmelite monastery in
  4. 0:16lesu france began writing at the behest
  5. 0:19of her biological sisters what she would
  6. 0:22call a story of her soul it would become
  7. 0:26her own magnificat
  8. 0:28she died in 1897 through a terrible bout
  9. 0:32of tuberculosis
  10. 0:34and yet her sisters
  11. 0:36inspired by what she wrote
  12. 0:38published her work
  13. 0:40and her devotion and fame began
  14. 0:43spreading throughout europe like
  15. 0:44wildfire she was beatified in 1923
  16. 0:48canonized in 1925.
  17. 0:51pope pius xi said that she was the
  18. 0:53greatest saint
  19. 0:54of modern times
  20. 0:56i refer of course to saint therese of
  21. 0:58lejeux
  22. 0:59one of the greatest saints
  23. 1:01whose work continues to this day
  24. 1:03and in this video we will discuss five
  25. 1:06lessons from her life
  26. 1:09[Music]
  27. 1:18the first lesson about therese begins
  28. 1:21less with therese than with the people
  29. 1:23who influenced her most her family
  30. 1:26in particular her mother and father
  31. 1:28zelly and louis martin
  32. 1:30zelly and louis before they married both
  33. 1:32aspire to the religious life
  34. 1:34and for various reasons realized that
  35. 1:37god would call them to a different
  36. 1:38vocation zelly determined if i would not
  37. 1:41be a religious then i will raise up many
  38. 1:43children to heaven zelie and louis had
  39. 1:46nine children four of whom died
  40. 1:48tragically at a very young age
  41. 1:51but all of their daughters became
  42. 1:53religious
  43. 1:55zelly and louis were both artisans
  44. 1:58she was an award-winning lace maker and
  45. 2:00he was a professional watchmaker and
  46. 2:03their attention to detail was applied to
  47. 2:06how they raised their children and the
  48. 2:07catholic faith
  49. 2:09zelly and louis ordered their home
  50. 2:11around the local parish in particular
  51. 2:14daily mass at 5 30 every morning zelly
  52. 2:17and louis made sure their family
  53. 2:19maintained all of the fasts of the
  54. 2:21church and all of the feasts of the
  55. 2:23church
  56. 2:24therese often recollects how her father
  57. 2:26would make frequent visits to the
  58. 2:28blessed sacrament and he would take her
  59. 2:30along with him and she would see him in
  60. 2:32prayer and she would say to herself that
  61. 2:34to look at my father praying must have
  62. 2:37been what it was like to see the saints
  63. 2:39pray
  64. 2:40and therese in many ways imitated her
  65. 2:43father in prayer
  66. 2:44louis was often told by his townspoke
  67. 2:46that he would be more profitable in his
  68. 2:48business if he only opened on sundays
  69. 2:51but louis always refused observing the
  70. 2:53sabbath every week
  71. 2:55therese recalls
  72. 2:57she and her father would give alms to
  73. 2:59the poor who would come to their home
  74. 3:00almost every week
  75. 3:02from zelly and louie therese learned to
  76. 3:05trust in divine providence to accept all
  77. 3:08the joys and sorrows of this life and
  78. 3:11that our sacrifices however small that
  79. 3:15we do for the love of god or we're down
  80. 3:17to god's glory and for the benefit of
  81. 3:19others
  82. 3:21why do we have children
  83. 3:24the world has its answers
  84. 3:26but for catholics there's only one
  85. 3:28answer
  86. 3:29we have children
  87. 3:31to make saints
  88. 3:32to raise children up to the lord and the
  89. 3:35martin family shows us how
  90. 3:41[Music]
  91. 3:48the second lesson about therese concerns
  92. 3:50her doctrine of the little way
  93. 3:53therese had a desire to be a saint
  94. 3:55a great saint and she believed that god
  95. 3:58would never have inspired her with this
  96. 4:00desire had he no intention of fulfilling
  97. 4:03it
  98. 4:03she trusted that god never commands the
  99. 4:06impossible so when jesus says be perfect
  100. 4:09as your heavenly father is perfect it
  101. 4:11must be attainable
  102. 4:13yet when therese looked within herself
  103. 4:16she saw too many imperfections and
  104. 4:18weaknesses to make this possible
  105. 4:21therese never dabbled in false humility
  106. 4:24she never exaggerated her weaknesses to
  107. 4:26be more than what they were she was
  108. 4:28truly honest with herself
  109. 4:30therese compared herself to the great
  110. 4:33saints like a little grain of sand next
  111. 4:36to a mountain whose summit reaches into
  112. 4:38the clouds
  113. 4:39and her question became how am i going
  114. 4:42to get from here
  115. 4:44to there
  116. 4:45and therese by meditating upon the
  117. 4:48scriptures realized i need a shortcut
  118. 4:51and i need a lift
  119. 4:53and if i throw myself into the arms of
  120. 4:55jesus
  121. 4:57he will be my lift and he will raise me
  122. 4:59up to himself
  123. 5:02the little way
  124. 5:03is more than a set of practices and
  125. 5:06methods it's more than just doing little
  126. 5:09things with great love
  127. 5:11it is a way of being
  128. 5:14it is a disposition of the heart
  129. 5:17it is acknowledging that on our own
  130. 5:19we are nothing
  131. 5:21and we can do nothing without christ
  132. 5:24therese believed that jesus
  133. 5:27was holiness itself
  134. 5:29he was
  135. 5:30sanctity
  136. 5:32itself
  137. 5:33and if she was going to be holy then
  138. 5:35what she needed to do she said was
  139. 5:38borrow the holiness and sanctity that
  140. 5:41belonged to christ alone
  141. 5:43if god wanted her to have faith hope and
  142. 5:45love then god was going to have to be
  143. 5:48faith hope and love in her
  144. 5:51that yes we are called to be saints
  145. 5:54but we do not have the strength to
  146. 5:56become saints on our own
  147. 5:58instead we can throw ourselves into the
  148. 6:01arms of god our father like a little
  149. 6:03child to its parent and allow god and
  150. 6:06god's life to live in us lord you can
  151. 6:09love in me and through me that is the
  152. 6:12essence of a little way
  153. 6:23the third lesson about therese concerns
  154. 6:25her devotion to the virgin mary
  155. 6:27the devotion to the virgin mary was very
  156. 6:29much the soil in which the little flower
  157. 6:32grew developed and received her
  158. 6:34nourishment consider her full name
  159. 6:38mary therese francois martin
  160. 6:42zelly and louis martin named all of
  161. 6:44their children after the virgin mary
  162. 6:47why because they wanted to ensure all
  163. 6:50their children were consecrated to the
  164. 6:52holy mother
  165. 6:54and it was through a statue of the
  166. 6:56virgin mary in therese's room where mary
  167. 6:59appeared and smiled upon her healing
  168. 7:02therese of a terrible illness from which
  169. 7:05she suffered for many weeks
  170. 7:07consider the convent and the order she
  171. 7:10joined the carmelites
  172. 7:12the first order dedicated to the virgin
  173. 7:15mary
  174. 7:17and therese herself said she would only
  175. 7:18want to be a priest for one reason so
  176. 7:21she could preach a homily about the
  177. 7:23blessed virgin mary
  178. 7:25therese once mused that she thought
  179. 7:27herself richer than the virgin mary why
  180. 7:30because teresa says mary i have you to
  181. 7:33love but you do not have like me the
  182. 7:36blessed mother to love
  183. 7:37and the very last sentence therese wrote
  184. 7:40was o mary if i were queen of heaven and
  185. 7:42you were therese i would happily be
  186. 7:45therese to see you queen of heaven
  187. 7:48by the time therese died many people saw
  188. 7:50in therese a living expression of the
  189. 7:53virgin mary that therese assumed a
  190. 7:57marian form in her life a confessor said
  191. 8:00to therese i declare before god and the
  192. 8:02holy angels that you have never
  193. 8:04committed a grave sin
  194. 8:07although therese was certainly not
  195. 8:08immaculately conceived she did intuit
  196. 8:12that god had by a special preservative
  197. 8:14grace prevented her from falling into
  198. 8:17mortal sin therese kept a copy of the
  199. 8:20gospels near her heart
  200. 8:22and like the virgin mother she treasured
  201. 8:24and pondered the lord's word and kept
  202. 8:26them in her heart
  203. 8:29and with prophetic insight therese saw
  204. 8:32that after her death
  205. 8:34many people would love her as if
  206. 8:37all generations will call me blessed
  207. 8:40and therese understood heaven not as a
  208. 8:42place of repose or rest
  209. 8:45but as an expansion of her mission to be
  210. 8:47an advocate for the church for lost
  211. 8:50souls and like the blessed mother
  212. 8:52herself to be a refuge of sinners
  213. 8:55when she was a small girl her father
  214. 8:57gave her the nickname little queen
  215. 9:00he meant that as a term of endearment
  216. 9:03but his too was a prophetic insight by
  217. 9:06the time therese's life ended
  218. 9:08she really had become
  219. 9:10a little queen
  220. 9:12a mary in miniature
  221. 9:15[Music]
  222. 9:25the fourth lesson about therese concerns
  223. 9:27her love and desire for jesus in the
  224. 9:30holy eucharist
  225. 9:31for therese there was no personal
  226. 9:34relationship with jesus apart from the
  227. 9:36blessed sacrament
  228. 9:37and from the earliest age she desired to
  229. 9:40receive her lord in holy communion one
  230. 9:43of the most beautiful passages in her
  231. 9:44autobiography concerns how she describes
  232. 9:47her first communion
  233. 9:49she said up until that point her
  234. 9:50relationship with jesus was face to face
  235. 9:53it was a glance at each other
  236. 9:55but when she received her lord in the
  237. 9:57blessed sacrament it was no longer face
  238. 10:00to face
  239. 10:01it was a fusion
  240. 10:02the two became one
  241. 10:04and it was no longer therese who lived
  242. 10:07it was christ living in her
  243. 10:10what therese saw in the holy eucharist
  244. 10:13was perfect humility
  245. 10:15jesus descending under the guise of
  246. 10:18bread
  247. 10:19that he could not lower himself to us
  248. 10:22anymore
  249. 10:24therese wanted to receive jesus in the
  250. 10:26eucharist as often as possible
  251. 10:29her sister marie said that her greatest
  252. 10:31source of suffering at the carmelite
  253. 10:33convent consisted of its infrequent
  254. 10:36practice of holy communion
  255. 10:38therese would say to the hesitant it is
  256. 10:40not to remain in a golden cyborium that
  257. 10:43jesus comes down each day from heaven
  258. 10:46he wants to find another heaven
  259. 10:49the heaven of our souls in which he
  260. 10:51takes delight
  261. 10:53what can we learn from therese's great
  262. 10:55desire for frequent communion
  263. 10:58that it is an encounter with christ
  264. 11:00himself
  265. 11:01when we receive the holy eucharist we
  266. 11:03receive a person
  267. 11:05and when we visit him in adoration we
  268. 11:08are quenching his thirst a thirst that
  269. 11:10she believed was a thirst for souls a
  270. 11:13thirst for our love
  271. 11:16therese understood
  272. 11:17jesus in the holy eucharist fills what
  273. 11:20is empty he feels what is impoverished
  274. 11:24in us
  275. 11:25and when he fills us he transforms our
  276. 11:28nothingness into holy fire
  277. 11:33[Music]
  278. 11:44the fifth lesson about therese concerns
  279. 11:46her experiences of suffering and
  280. 11:48sacrifice
  281. 11:50therese's life was fraught with pain and
  282. 11:52loss and grief
  283. 11:54she lost her mother when she was only
  284. 11:56four years old she lost her older
  285. 11:58sisters to the carmelite convent she
  286. 12:01experienced tremendous illnesses
  287. 12:03throughout her life and suffered from
  288. 12:05chronic headaches
  289. 12:07she experienced periods of intense
  290. 12:09scrupulosity
  291. 12:10even near the end of her life she was
  292. 12:12tested against faith and the existence
  293. 12:14of god
  294. 12:16and of course one of her tremendous
  295. 12:17sorrows which she called a piercing of
  296. 12:19her heart concerned the loss of her
  297. 12:21father when she was just 21 a man she
  298. 12:23called her king her beloved
  299. 12:27therese understood the sufferings of her
  300. 12:29life to be a part of god's providence
  301. 12:32and because she knew god was a good god
  302. 12:36she understood that god only wills our
  303. 12:39good
  304. 12:40but does permit the evil and the
  305. 12:43suffering for a greater good
  306. 12:46so she embraced them because she trusted
  307. 12:49that god would use them to draw her
  308. 12:51closer to him and to make her holier as
  309. 12:54a result
  310. 12:55but therese never sought suffering for
  311. 12:58its own sake
  312. 12:59instead she wanted to be so conformed to
  313. 13:02christ
  314. 13:03including christ on his cross
  315. 13:07he suffered for love
  316. 13:08and so she wanted to suffer for love
  317. 13:11with him
  318. 13:13therese understood that love in this
  319. 13:15life
  320. 13:16feeds
  321. 13:17on
  322. 13:18sacrifices love needs to show its
  323. 13:21willingness to sink into the depths for
  324. 13:24the sake of others and so therese would
  325. 13:27do small sacrifices throughout the day
  326. 13:29every day
  327. 13:31she would break her will she would do
  328. 13:33these hidden acts of service for others
  329. 13:35they would have no idea who was doing
  330. 13:37them and she would gravitate to the most
  331. 13:39disagreeable personality in the convent
  332. 13:42as an expression of her own sacrifice
  333. 13:45to show forth her love for god
  334. 13:48therese the last two years especially
  335. 13:50the last year of her life
  336. 13:53suffered from the debilities of
  337. 13:54tuberculosis
  338. 13:56she slowly began to asphyxiate
  339. 13:59and yet she saw in her suffering a
  340. 14:01greater
  341. 14:03conformity to christ on his cross
  342. 14:06who also suffered from asphyxiation
  343. 14:09there was a poignant moment
  344. 14:11as therese was dying when her sisters
  345. 14:14propped her up one sister on each side
  346. 14:17her arms outstretched her body limp
  347. 14:20barely breathing
  348. 14:22and it looked as if it was christ
  349. 14:24himself appearing through her
  350. 14:27but therese was willing to suffer this
  351. 14:30way
  352. 14:31if it meant that the love with which she
  353. 14:33loved christ and the love with which she
  354. 14:35was willing to humiliate herself to
  355. 14:37descend as christ did
  356. 14:39will renown to the salvation of the
  357. 14:41world
  358. 14:43her last words were
  359. 14:45oh
  360. 14:46how i love him
  361. 14:48my god
  362. 14:50i love you
  363. 14:51[Music]
  364. 14:53what is the lesson that therese teaches
  365. 14:55us about suffering and sacrifice
  366. 14:57all of us have suffering and sorrow in
  367. 15:00our lives
  368. 15:02but can we trust as therese did that god
  369. 15:05only wills our good
  370. 15:07and whatever evils and sufferings and
  371. 15:09sorrows are happening to us are meant
  372. 15:11for a greater good
  373. 15:13we can as christ did on his cross absorb
  374. 15:16them
  375. 15:17and absorb them in love
  376. 15:19for the salvation of other souls a
  377. 15:22family member or for sinners in general
  378. 15:25we are bringing glory to god because we
  379. 15:29are bringing his love into the world a
  380. 15:31love that was willing to sacrifice and
  381. 15:34suffer for us
  382. 15:40[Music]
