- 0:00Tuesday everyone welcome to ss36 science
- 0:05technology and Society for this lesson
- 0:09we will be talking about Information
- 0:11Society
- 0:14in this lesson we will be talking about
- 0:17the following topics first about
- 0:20information
- 0:22second the role of language
- 0:26third mathematics is the language of
- 0:29nature
- 0:30fourth the printing press and Beyond and
- 0:34the last one is about the World Wide Web
- 0:41at the end of this lesson
- 0:43it is expected that each student is able
- 0:46to
- 0:47determine the human and social impacts
- 0:50of the developments in the information
- 0:52age
- 0:53discuss the evolution of Technology from
- 0:56the ancient times up to the present
- 0:59and illustrate how social media have
- 1:02affected Our Lives
- 1:07to start with let us talk about
- 1:09information
- 1:11humans are surrounded on all sides by
- 1:14technology claiming to supply
- 1:16information
- 1:17television smartphones and Internet
- 1:21devices among others however do they all
- 1:25provide information or are just noise
- 1:28more voices are trying to get our
- 1:31attention but how can we be sure that
- 1:33they share knowledge and the truth
- 1:36to answer this basic question a short
- 1:39historical backgrounder might prove
- 1:41useful
- 1:42before the printed word the written word
- 1:45was prevalent yet the intent to carry
- 1:49information has always been present
- 1:52a word is a combination of sounds that
- 1:55represents something
- 1:57it is the significance which makes words
- 2:00distinct from just any kind of vocal
- 2:03utterance
- 2:04words are made up of sounds and yet they
- 2:08transmit something more significant
- 2:11we transmit a message the words are
- 2:14informed because they carry information
- 2:18words are in form with meaning given by
- 2:21this teacher and intended for the
- 2:23listener
- 2:24therefore words communicate meaning
- 2:28moving forward let us now talk about the
- 2:32role of language
- 2:35in the human quest for understanding the
- 2:38natural world the ability to name and
- 2:40classify objects found in nature was
- 2:43seen as a first step in knowing thus the
- 2:47scientific search for truth early on
- 2:49recognized the usefulness of language
- 2:52and the ability it gave to make sense of
- 2:55nature
- 2:57for the ancient Greeks language was an
- 3:00object worthy of admiration words have
- 3:03power
- 3:05thinking in terms of a common system
- 3:07being generated by the speaker and
- 3:10received by The Listener is useful in
- 3:12person of knowledge this kind of knowing
- 3:15sprang from the Greek Fascination and
- 3:18wonder at The Power of Words and
- 3:20language
- 3:21how is it possible that one's idea can
- 3:24simultaneously exist in his or her mind
- 3:27and in others
- 3:28how is it possible that human beings can
- 3:31communicate through words and thus form
- 3:34a community
- 3:35there's a power of the communicated word
- 3:37come from the scripture who is a thinker
- 3:40and a source or from The Listener who is
- 3:43the recipient of the communication
- 3:45however you answer these points it is
- 3:49clear that thinking in terms of a common
- 3:51system being generated by the speaker
- 3:54and received by The Listener is useful
- 3:57in the pursuit of knowledge science from
- 4:01the Latin word Sierra meaning to know is
- 4:04one kind of knowledge the Greeks wanted
- 4:06to understand
- 4:07[Music]
- 4:09a meaningful message is created using
- 4:12ordinary sounds therefore meaning is not
- 4:15diminished by multiplication
- 4:18the idea of comprehending words as more
- 4:21than just combinations of sounds like
- 4:23the Greeks to seek out the principles of
- 4:26everyday language
- 4:28when talking to other people for example
- 4:31a meaningful message is created using
- 4:34ordinary sounds
- 4:36its meaning is also not diminished by
- 4:38multiplication the speaker can use the
- 4:42same words over and over again to talk
- 4:44to 10 100 or even a thousand people
- 4:47separately or at the same time
- 4:50nevertheless the same message will be
- 4:53received by everyone words therefore can
- 4:57function across space and time without
- 4:59reducing their meaning
- 5:03the first philosophers as they trashed
- 5:06about broken poor and seeking a unifying
- 5:09principle in nature sometimes hit upon
- 5:12things such as fire or water but they
- 5:15believed that something was common in
- 5:18all of this
- 5:19the many seemingly different things in
- 5:21the natural world must have a unifying
- 5:24Factor
- 5:25there was an inside to be understood
- 5:28they sought for this metaphousives
- 5:31literally meaning after nature
- 5:34on the other hand
- 5:36Plato's principle of one in the many
- 5:39refers to the underlying Unity among
- 5:42diverse beings in the natural world
- 5:45for Plato there is a common intrinsic
- 5:48nature shared by different objects which
- 5:51determines the real sense
- 5:53biologists devise a way to illustrate
- 5:56this principle using a system
- 5:58differentiating between genus and
- 6:01species many species belong in one genus
- 6:06in the 21st century we are aware more
- 6:09than ever that there is Rich diversity
- 6:11in nature which technology has allowed
- 6:14us to discover
- 6:16the next part of this presentation deals
- 6:19with mathematics as a language of nature
- 6:23technology in the modern world is the
- 6:25fruit of science because the scientific
- 6:28method helps people discover how nature
- 6:31behaves they were able to control nature
- 6:34with technology
- 6:35a more accurate statement is
- 6:38since people have discovered the laws
- 6:41and language of nature they can develop
- 6:43technology that uses this laws and
- 6:46language for their benefits
- 6:49nature can be understood because it
- 6:52speaks in the language of mathematics
- 6:54and the human brain to certain extent
- 6:57can comprehend to this language
- 6:59unfortunately this fact is not always
- 7:02appreciated
- 7:05mathematics is one of the great
- 7:07contributions of Sir Isaac Newton
- 7:11let us now proceed with our discussion
- 7:14of the printing press and Beyond
- 7:17the ancient fascination with language
- 7:19gave rise to the preservation of the
- 7:22words of earlier people at the same time
- 7:24when the West weakened itself due to the
- 7:27international Warfare and conflicts
- 7:30throughout this dark period the
- 7:32importance of the word or the power to
- 7:35be informed as a human being led to the
- 7:38transcription of ideas through hand
- 7:40copying the power of the or idea
- 7:43would be with this in the succeeding
- 7:46centuries of development in the west
- 7:48from this manual action would arise in
- 7:51technology that would transform cultures
- 7:54or what we call the printing press the
- 7:58development of the printing press which
- 8:00may be regarded as the beginning of a
- 8:03true revolution could be dated to the
- 8:0615th century
- 8:07throat printing press the ancient Greek
- 8:10idea that knowledge should be shared and
- 8:13communicated among humans would actually
- 8:15be born on a scale unimagined by its
- 8:18thinkers using the printing press people
- 8:21on different sides of the world could
- 8:23share their thoughts and ideas with each
- 8:25other forming communities of thinkers
- 8:28across space and time the world has
- 8:31never looked backed this technological
- 8:33invention allowed words and scientific
- 8:35ideas to establish a view of nature
- 8:38anchored in scholarly works and studies
- 8:41for instance new discoveries about
- 8:44phenomenon of electricity were eagerly
- 8:46absorbed by fellow scientists who then
- 8:49utilized the science to create other
- 8:51technological products the radio was
- 8:54built upon the wave nature of
- 8:56electricity and magnetism and from there
- 8:59on television followed in the age of
- 9:02information the transmission of ideas
- 9:04has undergone changes meaning and depth
- 9:08are no longer conveyed strictly by
- 9:10rhetoric but rather by its electronic
- 9:12replacement the digital signal or digit
- 9:16such a digital world is a direct
- 9:19offspring of the progressing world of
- 9:21technology built upon the many advances
- 9:25in science the last part of this
- 9:27presentation talks about the World Wide
- 9:30Web a more modern example of Technology
- 9:33feeding upon itself is a 20th century
- 9:37tour de force or the World Wide Web
- 9:39through the internet sir team
- 9:42berners-lee invented it as a way of
- 9:45addressing data processing and
- 9:47information sharing needs among
- 9:49scientists for the European Organization
- 9:52for nuclear research research or search
- 9:55cern's act on Smasher produces a huge
- 9:59amount of scientific data every second
- 10:02it does required better data analyzers
- 10:05to work on the gathered information and
- 10:08coordination with each other while the
- 10:11Telegraph and telephone had allowed the
- 10:13transmission of information to transcend
- 10:16physical boundaries processing a
- 10:19veritable ocean and mountain of
- 10:21scientific data generated by the atom
- 10:24smasher needed a new medium with the
- 10:27ease of sharing information at present
- 10:29its reliability becomes compromised
- 10:33anyone with a connection to other people
- 10:35can produce contents which are showing
- 10:38half truths or even lies giving rise to
- 10:41this information
- 10:43social media encourages building a
- 10:46community of like-minded people the
- 10:49creation of these groups often
- 10:51reinforces biases and beliefs based only
- 10:54on the content that they allow within
- 10:56the community foregoing the variation
- 10:58and Clash of ideas provided in real life
- 11:02first this communities can be taught by
- 11:06people in power who may take advantage
- 11:08of this mechanisms controlling public
- 11:11opinion and harassing those people who
- 11:15present opposing views for their own
- 11:17advantage
- 11:19meanwhile the easy access to personal
- 11:22information makes one susceptible to
- 11:25online predation identity theft and
- 11:28scamming among others thus it truly pays
- 11:33to be vigilant in utilizing these modern
- 11:35devices at all times let us think before
- 11:39we post something when we say think is
- 11:43it true
- 11:45helpful inspiring necessary and kind and
- 11:50with all of these things that we are
- 11:51talking about world wide web in the
- 11:54Philippines we have what we call the
- 11:56Republic act
- 11:5710175 or also known as a cyber crime
- 12:01prevention Act of 2012. it focuses on
- 12:04the preemption prevention and
- 12:07prosecution of cyber crimes such as
- 12:10offenses against privacy confidentiality
- 12:13integrity and availability of computer
- 12:16data and Systems computer related
- 12:19offenses and content related offenses
- 12:23the following are the offenses under the
- 12:26Republic act
- 12:2710175 illegal access illegal
- 12:31interception data interference system
- 12:35interference
- 12:36misuse of devices
- 12:38cyber squatic computer related forgery
- 12:42computer related fraud
- 12:45computer related identity theft cyber
- 12:49sex child pornography and unsolicited
- 12:52commercial communication aiding cyber
- 12:55crime attempting cyber crime libel and
- 12:59corporate liability are also included
- 13:02under the cyber crime prevention Act of
- 13:042012. on the other hand we also have in
- 13:08the Philippines the Republic act 10173
- 13:11or the data Privacy Act of 2012. it is a
- 13:16law that seeks to protect all forms of
- 13:18information be it private or personal or
- 13:22sensitive it is meant to cover both
- 13:24natural and judicial persons involved in
- 13:28the processing of personal information
- 13:31it protects the privacy of individuals
- 13:34while ensuring the free flow of
- 13:36information to promote Innovation and
- 13:39growth it also regulates the collection
- 13:41recording organization storage updating
- 13:46or modification retrieval consultation
- 13:49use consolidation blocking Erasure or
- 13:54destruction of personal data
- 13:57all personal information must be
- 13:59collected for reasons that are specified
- 14:02legitimate and reasonable also personal
- 14:06information must be handled properly and
- 14:10personal information must be discarded
- 14:13in a way that does not make it visible
- 14:15and accessible to unauthorized third
- 14:18parties
- 14:19more information about the data privacy
- 14:22app of 2012 can be accessed in the
- 14:25website of the national privacy
- 14:27Commission
- 14:29that's it for this lesson on Information
- 14:31Society thank you very much for
- 14:34listening and have a great day ahead
