  1. 0:01good day everyone welcome to ss36
  2. 0:04science technology and Society
  3. 0:07for today's lesson we will be talking
  4. 0:10about human flourishing in science and
  5. 0:12technology
  6. 0:15for this lesson we will be talking about
  7. 0:18the following First Technology as a mode
  8. 0:22of revealing second technology as
  9. 0:25policies
  10. 0:26third questioning is the piety of
  11. 0:29thought
  12. 0:30support and framing the way of revealing
  13. 0:34in modern technology
  14. 0:36the fifth one is about human person
  15. 0:39swallowed by technology
  16. 0:41and the last one is about art as a way
  17. 0:44out of and framing
  18. 0:46[Music]
  19. 0:48at the end of this lesson it is expected
  20. 0:51that you will be able to discuss what
  21. 0:54technology reveals
  22. 0:56examine modern technology in its role in
  23. 0:59human flourishing and explain the role
  24. 1:02of Art in a technological world
  25. 1:09science as part of human life the
  26. 1:12progress of human civilizations
  27. 1:14throughout history mirrors the
  28. 1:16development of Science and Technology
  29. 1:19the human person as both the bearer and
  30. 1:22beneficiary of Science and Technology
  31. 1:24flourishes and finds meaning in the
  32. 1:27world that he or she builds in the
  33. 1:30person's pursuit of the good life he or
  34. 1:32she may unconsciously acquire consume or
  35. 1:36destroy what the world has to offer
  36. 1:38and it is necessary to reflect on the
  37. 1:41things that truly matter
  38. 1:43Science and Technology must be taken as
  39. 1:46part of human life that marriage
  40. 1:48reflective and as the German philosopher
  41. 1:51Martin Heidegger says meditative
  42. 1:54thinking
  43. 1:56Science and Technology despite its
  44. 1:59methodical and Technical nature gives
  45. 2:02meaning to the life of a person making
  46. 2:04his or her way in the world
  47. 2:07to be able to appreciate the fruits of
  48. 2:10Science and Technology they must be
  49. 2:12examined not only for their function and
  50. 2:15instrumentality but also for their
  51. 2:17greater impact on Humanity as a whole
  52. 2:20the various gadgets the machines
  53. 2:22appliances and vehicles are all tools
  54. 2:26that make human lives easier because
  55. 2:28they serve as a means to an end the
  56. 2:31utility lies on providing people with a
  57. 2:34certain good convenience or knowledge
  58. 2:37on the other hand medical research
  59. 2:40employs the best scientific and
  60. 2:42technological principles to come up with
  61. 2:45curious vertices and ways to prevent
  62. 2:47illnesses to ensure a good quality of
  63. 2:50life we now move forward to our
  64. 2:52discussion of Technology as a mode of
  65. 2:55revealing
  66. 2:56in his seminal work the question of
  67. 2:59Technology Martin Heidegger urges us to
  68. 3:03question technology and see beyond
  69. 3:05people's common understanding of it
  70. 3:08according to ancient Doctrine the
  71. 3:11essence of a thing is considered to be
  72. 3:13what the thing is we ask the question
  73. 3:15concerning technology when we ask what
  74. 3:18it is everyone knows the two statements
  75. 3:21that answer our question one says
  76. 3:24technology is a means to an end while
  77. 3:27the other one says technology is a human
  78. 3:30activity
  79. 3:31the two definitions of Technology Belong
  80. 3:34Together
  81. 3:35part to post it ends and procure and
  82. 3:37utilize the means to them is a human
  83. 3:39activity
  84. 3:41the manufacturer and utilization of
  85. 3:44equipment tools and machines the
  86. 3:46manufactured and used things themselves
  87. 3:49and the needs and ends that they serve
  88. 3:51all belong to what technology is
  89. 3:54the whole complex of these contribances
  90. 3:57is technology
  91. 3:59and Technology itself is a contrivance
  92. 4:02and in Latin it's an instrumental
  93. 4:06[Music]
  94. 4:08the current conception of technology
  95. 4:11according to which it is a means and a
  96. 4:14human activity can therefore be called
  97. 4:16the instrumental and anthropological
  98. 4:19definition of Technology
  99. 4:21this definition is correct but not
  100. 4:24necessarily true the true entails so
  101. 4:27much more meaning and significance
  102. 4:30Heidegger however asserted that the true
  103. 4:33can be pursued through the correct
  104. 4:35Heidegger urged people to Envision
  105. 4:38Technology as a mode of revealing as it
  106. 4:41shows so much more about the human
  107. 4:43person and the world technology is a way
  108. 4:47of bringing forth and making something
  109. 4:49by considering technology as a mode of
  110. 4:52revealing then truth is brought forth
  111. 4:56for instance the truth that the Earth is
  112. 4:59weeping could be revealed by the
  113. 5:01information and data taken by modern
  114. 5:03devices
  115. 5:05whatever truth is unpowered it will be
  116. 5:08something more meaningful and
  117. 5:09significant Than The Superficial or
  118. 5:12practical use of Technology
  119. 5:16Heidegger also put forward the ancient
  120. 5:19Greek concepts of aletaya
  121. 5:23Oasis
  122. 5:25and technique
  123. 5:28means unhiddenness or disclosure polices
  124. 5:32on the other hand is defined as bringing
  125. 5:35forth for Aristotle it means making or
  126. 5:38producing something for a purpose it is
  127. 5:41sometimes used to refer to poetry and
  128. 5:44composition
  129. 5:45on the other hand technique or the root
  130. 5:49word for technology means skill art or
  131. 5:52craft it is a means of bringing forth
  132. 5:55something
  133. 5:57moreover in Heidegger's work technology
  134. 6:00is a policies that discloses or reveals
  135. 6:04the truth to think of Technology as
  136. 6:07poetry takes a different mindset a more
  137. 6:10reflective and sensitive way of looking
  138. 6:12at the world this perspective is not
  139. 6:14easy to take especially in this era when
  140. 6:17instant knowledge is demanded and Split
  141. 6:20Second updates are the norm and when the
  142. 6:22pursuit of Fame and Fortune is
  143. 6:24unceasingly bannered on social media
  144. 6:27there is so much noise in the world that
  145. 6:30it would take a disciplined stepping
  146. 6:31back to see what Heidegger meant and to
  147. 6:34appreciate how technology could actually
  148. 6:36be poetry that praying support through
  149. 6:39it moving forward let us now talk about
  150. 6:42technology as policies is it applicable
  151. 6:45to modern technology
  152. 6:47does the idea the technology is policies
  153. 6:50applied to modern technology
  154. 6:53hydrogen characterizes modern technology
  155. 6:55as a challenging Port since it is very
  156. 6:58aggressive in its activity modern
  157. 7:01technology may also be a mode of
  158. 7:03revealing but not as the harmonious
  159. 7:05bringing forth that they subscribe any
  160. 7:07species of Technology as policies
  161. 7:10modern technology challenges nature and
  162. 7:14demands of it resources that are most of
  163. 7:17the time forcibly extracted for human
  164. 7:19consumption and storage it brings about
  165. 7:22a setting upon of the land
  166. 7:24mining is an example of modern
  167. 7:26technology that challenges Sport and
  168. 7:29raise about the setting upon the plant
  169. 7:31it extracts minerals from the earth and
  170. 7:34forcefully assigns the land as a means
  171. 7:36to fulfill the never-ending demands of
  172. 7:39people
  173. 7:40with modern technology revealing never
  174. 7:42comes to an end the revealing always
  175. 7:45happens on our own terms as everything
  176. 7:48is on demand information at our
  177. 7:51fingertips food harvested even out of
  178. 7:54season Gravity defied the fly off the
  179. 7:57space such as the capacity of the human
  180. 7:59person
  181. 8:01we no longer need to work with the
  182. 8:03rhythms of nature because we have
  183. 8:05learned to control it
  184. 8:07the other nature and extract process and
  185. 8:11make ready for consumption and store
  186. 8:13what we have forced it to reveal
  187. 8:15Heidegger described modern technology as
  188. 8:18an agent switches standing reserve and
  189. 8:21stockpiling for its own sake this
  190. 8:24observation is manifested in a
  191. 8:27mechanization and digitization of many
  192. 8:30aspects of our life from agriculture to
  193. 8:33Communications and transportation among
  194. 8:36many authors
  195. 8:37with these ideas we now move forward to
  196. 8:40the topic of questioning as a piety of
  197. 8:43thought
  198. 8:44let us start with this statement
  199. 8:46questioning is a piety of thought
  200. 8:49in this stepping back and taking stop of
  201. 8:52things we begin to wonder in question
  202. 8:55one may admire the intricacy of
  203. 8:58mechanisms and the sophistication of
  204. 9:00mobile applications
  205. 9:01another May Marvel at the people and
  206. 9:04circumstances that allowed for such
  207. 9:06technology
  208. 9:07there is so much wealth of insights that
  209. 9:10can be gathered when people stop think
  210. 9:13and question
  211. 9:15normally piety is associated with being
  212. 9:19religious for Heidegger however piety
  213. 9:22means obedience and submission in
  214. 9:26addressing what technology has brought
  215. 9:27forth one cannot help but be submissive
  216. 9:30to what his or her thoughts and
  217. 9:32Reflections elicit sometimes thinking
  218. 9:36brings forth insights that the mind has
  219. 9:38not yet fully understood or developed
  220. 9:40there are times when one's thinking
  221. 9:43brings forth Eureka moments
  222. 9:46whatever understanding is found becomes
  223. 9:50significant because it is evoked by
  224. 9:52questioning who or what we essentially
  225. 9:54are in the world
  226. 9:56for example it is a known fruit the
  227. 9:59three human beings and everything around
  228. 10:01us are made of the same substances that
  229. 10:04constitute the Stars therefore we
  230. 10:08actually are all star dust do we take
  231. 10:10this as a matter of fact or do we wonder
  232. 10:13at the significance
  233. 10:15it is when we start questioning the
  234. 10:18three submit ourselves to our thoughts
  235. 10:21this kind of questioning leads one to
  236. 10:24search for his or her place in the
  237. 10:26universe and in a grand scale of things
  238. 10:29it is through this process that we build
  239. 10:32await solar is the truth of who he or
  240. 10:35she is as a being in this world
  241. 10:38it is simply saying lowering our purpose
  242. 10:41and the truth
  243. 10:42the next part of this lesson is about
  244. 10:45and framing the way of revealing in
  245. 10:48modern technology the way of revealing
  246. 10:51in modern technology is an intrigue this
  247. 10:54and framing the challenges for it and
  248. 10:57sets upon nature is a way of looking at
  249. 11:00reality in simple terms it is as if
  250. 11:04nature is put in a box or in a frame so
  251. 11:07that it can be better understood and
  252. 11:09controlled according to people's desires
  253. 11:11polices is concealed in in framing as
  254. 11:15nature is viewed as an orderable and
  255. 11:17calculable system of information
  256. 11:20in looking at the world Heidegger
  257. 11:23distinguished between calculative
  258. 11:26thinking and meditative thinking in
  259. 11:29calculative thinking as mentioned
  260. 11:32earlier Juan orders and puts a system to
  261. 11:35Nature so that it can be understood
  262. 11:37better and controlled in meditative
  263. 11:40thinking One lets nature reveal itself
  264. 11:43to him or her without forcing it one
  265. 11:46kind of thinking is not in itself better
  266. 11:49than the other
  267. 11:50the human person has the faculty for
  268. 11:53both and would do well to use them in
  269. 11:56Synergy however people also want control
  270. 12:00and are afraid on unpredictability so
  271. 12:03calculative thinking is more often used
  272. 12:05and framing is done because people want
  273. 12:09Security even if the ordering that
  274. 12:11happens in and framing is violence and
  275. 12:14even if the earth is made as a big
  276. 12:16gasoline station for which we extract
  277. 12:19stockpile and put in standing Reserve
  278. 12:22ready to be used as we see fits the next
  279. 12:26part of this presentation deals with
  280. 12:29human person swallowed by technology
  281. 12:32we as human beings are really swallowed
  282. 12:35by technology
  283. 12:37though it is true that the individual
  284. 12:39takes part in the revealing of nature
  285. 12:43limits but still be recognized humans do
  286. 12:47not really call the shots on this Earth
  287. 12:49if we allow ourselves to get swallowed
  288. 12:52by modern technology we'll lose the
  289. 12:54essence of who we are as beings in this
  290. 12:57world
  291. 12:58and we are constantly plugged online and
  292. 13:01no longer have the capacity for
  293. 13:04authentic personal encounters then we
  294. 13:07are truly swallowed by technology if we
  295. 13:10cannot let go of the conveniences and
  296. 13:12profits brought about by processes and
  297. 13:15industries that pollute the environment
  298. 13:17and cause climate change then technology
  299. 13:20has consumed our Humanity
  300. 13:25nevertheless as expressed by the poet
  301. 13:28holberlin but where danger is grows the
  302. 13:32saving power also the saving power lies
  303. 13:36in the essence of Technology as
  304. 13:38technology
  305. 13:39Essence is the way in which things are
  306. 13:42as that which ensures Heidegger further
  307. 13:45asserted that the essence of technology
  308. 13:48is nothing technological the essence of
  309. 13:52technology is not found in the
  310. 13:54instrumentality and function of machines
  311. 13:57constructed but in the significance such
  312. 14:00as technology and boats
  313. 14:02he also expressed that the various
  314. 14:04problems brought about by humans
  315. 14:06dependence on technology cannot be
  316. 14:09simply resolved by refusing technology
  317. 14:12altogether and framing as the mode of
  318. 14:15revealing in modern technology tends to
  319. 14:18block coincides The Poetry that is found
  320. 14:22in nature can no longer be easily
  321. 14:24appreciated when Nature is in frame if
  322. 14:27the Earth has just become a gas station
  323. 14:29for us then we have become and framed as
  324. 14:33well
  325. 14:34in modern technology the way of
  326. 14:36revealing is no longer poetic it is
  327. 14:39challenging when instruments are
  328. 14:41observed linearly its poetry can no
  329. 14:44longer be found for example the water
  330. 14:48meal is a primitive structure compared
  331. 14:50to the higher power plant or the first
  332. 14:53iPhone model is just an absolute piece
  333. 14:55of machine
  334. 14:57Heidegger also proposes art as a way out
  335. 15:00of this end framing with art we are
  336. 15:03better able to see the poetic in nature
  337. 15:05in reality it leads us away from
  338. 15:08calculative thinking and towards
  339. 15:11meditative thinking through meditative
  340. 15:14thinking we will recognize that nature
  341. 15:17is Art par Excellence hence nature is
  342. 15:20the most poetic when meditatively
  343. 15:23looking at technology one will begin to
  344. 15:26question its significance in his or her
  345. 15:28life more than in its instrumental use
  346. 15:31technology is normally thought of as
  347. 15:34that which solves problems but Heidegger
  348. 15:37asserted that is something that must be
  349. 15:40questioned again it is in questioning
  350. 15:43that we build a way to understand
  351. 15:46in the nuclear Age We view nature as a
  352. 15:49problem to be solved the calculative
  353. 15:51thinking in which we perceive nature in
  354. 15:54a technical and scientific manner is
  355. 15:56becoming more important in the modern
  356. 15:58world on the other hand it is meditative
  357. 16:02thinking that provides a way for us to
  358. 16:04remain rooted in the essence of who we
  359. 16:07are it grounds us so as not to let our
  360. 16:10technological devices affect our real
  361. 16:13core and warp our nature to end this
  362. 16:17presentation let us take time to ponder
  363. 16:20on the following questions
  364. 16:22how is technology a mode of revealing
  365. 16:25in your daily experience of Technology
  366. 16:27what else is revealed to you aside from
  367. 16:30its function
  368. 16:32why should technology be questioned how
  369. 16:35is questioning the piety of thought
  370. 16:38and the last one how does art provide a
  371. 16:42way out of it framing
  372. 16:45that's it for this lesson on ss36
  373. 16:48science technology and Society about
  374. 16:51human flourishing in science and
  375. 16:54technology thank you very much for
  376. 16:56listening and have a great day ahead
