Full transcript
- 0:05Hi everybody, Elizabeth here. [music]
- 0:07Um this is just a quick video to explain
- 0:11assessment one [music] uh for SRP 5018
- 0:14to you which is the participation and
- 0:17engagement [music] assessment.
- 0:32We have 10 tutorials in the term.
- 0:34[music] So each tutorial uh gives you
- 0:36two marks towards that final grade. Um
- 0:39you won't be see be receiving feedback
- 0:41[music] every week. What we will do is
- 0:43give you some informal feedback between
- 0:45weeks three and four um where the tutors
- 0:48[music] can just uh update you on how
- 0:50they think you're going so you can
- 0:53figure out okay yeah I'm doing really
- 0:54well. I don't need [music] to change
- 0:56anything. Um or maybe they might have
- 0:58some suggestions for how you can do
- 0:59better.
- 1:05The way that we're marking this [music]
- 1:06assignment, it's broken down into a
- 1:08participation mark and an engagement
- 1:10mark. Now, the participation mark
- 1:12[music] is out of five. You either get
- 1:14five or zero. And participation is
- 1:17firstly physically showing up to the
- 1:20tutorial. [music] That's in person. If
- 1:23you're doing one of the inerson
- 1:25tutorials or of course logging on online
- 1:27[music] if you're in the online
- 1:28tutorial. But it's not just about being
- 1:31there physically. [music]
- 1:32We also want to see that you are active
- 1:36in that participation.
- 1:44We just want [music] to see that you are
- 1:46present, you're listening to what's
- 1:48going on around you, and you're [music]
- 1:50responding to instructions and guidance
- 1:53from your tutor.
- 1:58For engagement, [music]
- 2:00this is a little bit more complicated
- 2:02and I've tried to set it up so it is as
- 2:05[music] fair a reflection of your
- 2:07engagement as possible. Um, you'll be
- 2:10getting a mark out of 15 every week. And
- 2:13that will be five marks for your
- 2:15emotional engagement, five [music] marks
- 2:17for your cognitive engagement, and five
- 2:19marks for your behavioral engagement.
- 2:21Break that language down into something
- 2:23[music] a little bit simpler. What we
- 2:25have here is emotional engagement being
- 2:27about whether you um are genuinely
- 2:30listening and responding [music] to
- 2:31what's happening around you. Um that you
- 2:34bring a sense of positivity and openness
- 2:37[music] to learning when you come to
- 2:39class. Uh that you engage uh actively
- 2:42and respectfully with your peers and
- 2:45that you generally bring a sense [music]
- 2:47of emotional maturity to the discussions
- 2:49that we have in class. Second, [music]
- 2:52cognitive is about how you are
- 2:54understanding. Now, that doesn't mean
- 2:56that we expect you to show [music] up to
- 2:58every tutorial as an expert on the
- 3:00theories or on the ideas that we've been
- 3:02discussing. But what it does mean is
- 3:04[music] that we want to see that you are
- 3:07applying those theories and ideas, that
- 3:10you are thinking [music] through how
- 3:11they might work, what they might look
- 3:13like, that you're asking questions to
- 3:16help you clarify anything that you're
- 3:18not clear on. Um and generally showing
- 3:20that you are critically reflecting on
- 3:23the things [music] that we are talking
- 3:24about in the course and in a course
- 3:27that's about power and politics and
- 3:29policym of course this is really crucial
- 3:31because [music]
- 3:32there is a lot of critical thinking
- 3:34involved in understanding policy uh in
- 3:37the real world as well. And finally we
- 3:40have [music] behavioral engagement and
- 3:42that is about the things that you are
- 3:44actually doing to demonstrate your
- 3:46engagement. So that might be asking
- 3:48questions, speaking up. Um, but if
- 3:51that's not something [music] that you're
- 3:52totally comfortable with, it can also be
- 3:54about showing your engagement through
- 3:57[music] the small group discussions,
- 3:58through writing, through completing the
- 4:01online activities. Um, and what I want
- 4:04to do is try [music] and give you
- 4:06different ways to demonstrate this so
- 4:08that you don't feel like you [music]
- 4:10always have to be the person that's
- 4:11speaking up and saying something.
- 4:17Just to wrap up this [music] video,
- 4:19firstly I just want to stress engagement
- 4:21is not about being the loudest person in
- 4:23the room or the person who speaks most.
- 4:25Please do have a think about what is
- 4:27going [music] to work best for you and
- 4:30try to make sure that you have some
- 4:32[music] consistency across the term. The
- 4:34best tips that I can give to help make
- 4:37sure that you do well on this assessment
- 4:38[music] is firstly to do the readings
- 4:40that are set. Make sure you go through
- 4:42the Moodle. There will be notes on how
- 4:44[music] to prepare for each uh lecture
- 4:47and tutorial every week. Um there may
- 4:50sometimes [music]
- 4:50be an online video for you to watch
- 4:52beforehand. So just make sure that you
- 4:54go through the Moodle [music] and see
- 4:55what you need to do to prepare. Once
- 4:58you've done that, come to the tutorial
- 5:01and [music] be ready to share your ideas
- 5:03in whatever form works for you. There
- 5:06are no right or wrong answers
- 5:08necessarily [music]
- 5:09when we're talking about power and
- 5:10politics. And if you are not sure about
- 5:13something, ask a question and show us
- 5:16that you're engaging and thinking about
- 5:18the issues and ideas that this course is
- 5:21all about.
- 5:24[music]
- 5:36Heat.
