0:00so welcome to this first new series of
0:03webinars in which I'll be putting the
0:05art of contemplation into action and as
0:09you may or may not know
0:12contemplation well it's my
0:14thing and it's the word I use for a deep
0:18penetration into the heart of any
0:20problem or mystery in life and so when
0:24you understand how to contemplate then
0:26you begin to move deeper into the fabric
0:28of your own life
0:30and your awareness becomes more refined
0:33uh your self-acceptance
0:35deepens and your whole world view
0:37becomes more
0:39compassionate and like meditation
0:42contemplation is a powerful and viable
0:45life path in
0:48itself but it's also an
0:51art anyone can learn it although it
0:54isn't really a technique it's more of a
0:57knack of using your mind in commin with
1:00your heart and your
1:02intuition and it can lead to powerful
1:04breakthroughs that ultimately will make
1:07your life much easier and more enjoyable
1:10so I hope as you witness my own
1:11contemplative journey through these
1:13webinars that you'll be inspired to also
1:16employ the contemplative approach and
1:19bring its um beneficent calming power
1:22into your own
1:24life and the subject today is
1:27money contemplation can be playful but
1:31it can also be fiercely penetrating so
1:34it's therefore designed to release us
1:37from viewpoints that we hold without
1:38even realizing that we hold those
1:41viewpoints so money is a great place to
1:44begin um it's one of the classic issues
1:47that traps our thinking and that can
1:50literally sabotage an entire life from
1:53ever being joyous or from ever feeling
1:57free you know I love cliches
2:00and they almost always conceal deep
2:02wisdom so let's take a few money makes
2:05the world go
2:07round money makes the world go round
2:11it's kind of true I mean the way we've
2:14set up our modern societies you know the
2:17the current world economic model has its
2:20roots in the Middle Ages you know when
2:22free trade began its ascent and uh as
2:26people pulled themselves out of the
2:28older archical system the foms and the
2:32first entrepreneurs were born I mean we
2:35always had this bartering Consciousness
2:38but we never before had such a complex
2:41system of accounting and taxes and all
2:43of that and there's another uh cliche
2:47you know that the only certain thing is
2:50death and
2:52taxes particularly like that
2:55one but we also existed before money we
2:59existed without money in an earlier and
3:03simpler age you know we had no money at
3:06all and I'm sure we traded in Goods or
3:09skills because that seems to be natural
3:11human behavior to share to exchange to
3:15cooperate but in time money became our
3:19currency and our means of doing this and
3:22our means of relating with strangers or
3:25getting to know and trust or distrust
3:28each other and now we have a world that
3:30does completely revolve around money so
3:33yes it does make the world go around but
3:36it also makes our head spin
3:39around so my
3:44contemplation my contemplation is all
3:47about how to avoid that head
3:51spin whether you're rich and you have
3:54more than enough money or whether you're
3:56struggling without enough money you're
3:58still spinning
4:00money makes a spin it drives us crazy
4:04and you know
4:05why because money equates to time time
4:10is money that's my final cliche I always
4:14have to have three I like trinities so
4:17whether you're rich or poor money
4:20consumes your time it consumes your
4:24thinking and it makes your life often
4:27more complicated also we
4:30think but it doesn't have to be this
4:34way money only has a charge if you give
4:38it one it's the same with
4:40anything you know money can either trap
4:42you or it can set you
4:44free it's all a matter of how you hold
4:47it inside you and this is where money
4:50and spirituality meet and these two are
4:53not often comfortable bedmates I
4:56consider myself a spiritual man I've
4:59always been fascinated by the Mysteries
5:01that we can't see that lie beyond our
5:03senses and our measurements and like
5:06many I've had Direct experiences of
5:08other dimensions and I've spent a
5:11lifetime contemplating and exploring the
5:13hidden and the
5:16mystical but that's all very
5:18well I know many people who've fallen
5:20into that Wormhole of the spiritual
5:22world and have never been able to
5:24integrate their experiences into
5:26ordinary everyday life
5:30and if we can't integrate the spiritual
5:31Dimensions into the material world I
5:35think at some level we've missed the
5:37point I would even say that we're out of
5:40tune with where Evolution seems to be
5:44heading so this is a great
5:48Challenge and I also may be uniquely
5:52positioned to talk about this challenge
5:53since I'm in the unenviable position of
5:57speaking and teaching about spiritual
5:59matters and also having to charge for
6:01them
6:03sometimes now for some people that's
6:05sacrilege and the problem is that we are
6:09split and in so many things we're split
6:12the human brain it tends to divide into
6:15religious and scientific into male and
6:18female into subjective and objective but
6:22the contemplative approach unifies the
6:26polarities so you can only have a really
6:28balanced view of of life when you look
6:30at it both scientifically and
6:33spiritually so our
6:35problem our problem is time time is
6:39money and that's very true for most
6:42people but it's only true until you
6:45learn to slow down so pause for a
6:49moment for one moment in your day take a
6:52pause stop in the middle of a task and
6:55take a few deep
6:57breaths just pause
7:00you know the spiritual teacher GFF he
7:02called this technique self-remembering
7:04you know claim back some time for
7:07yourself claim back some of
7:11yourself in every
7:17day we don't have to be slaves to
7:20money you know but first of all we have
7:23to see how deeply we've allowed
7:26ourselves to become a
7:27slave and your ability to see how deeply
7:31you've become a slave is in direct
7:34relation to how much time you either
7:36spend thinking about money worrying
7:40about money or trying to make more money
7:43and this is the same whether you're rich
7:45or whether you're poor once you see
7:47through your fixation then you can start
7:49claiming back large SES of time back for
7:55yourself so we all have this illusion
7:58that having more money buys us more
8:01time I think it's just about one of the
8:04most ridiculous things I've ever heard
8:07the only thing that buys us more time is
8:09awareness awareness that's the ultimate
8:13currency because it's free it's
8:16current it brings you into the moment
8:20isn't that a funny pun
8:24currency so that's where we have to
8:26begin begin with awareness
8:33everyone wants to have more
8:35money because everyone really wants to
8:38have more time but we're all looking in
8:42the wrong place for that time we live at
8:45what I call the shadow
8:47frequency where we allow ourselves to
8:49become a victim of our own set of
8:51beliefs or at least society's
8:54beliefs
8:55but we can escape that rat race because
8:59it's it's inside us it's not out there
9:03it's a spiritual dilemma we face and
9:06once you've made this inner turning once
9:09you learn to slow down internally then
9:11you begin to breathe differently and
9:14time changes you make more
9:18time it's amazing that we can make more
9:23time because most people they simply
9:25don't breathe properly they don't
9:27breathe into their belly and if you
9:30don't breathe deeply then you don't feel
9:33calm so you can't make clear decisions
9:36so you aren't really operating at
9:38maximum
9:40efficiency so money can be a means to
9:43breathing more deeply every time you
9:46think about money see it as an ally
9:49breathe down into your belly and
9:53smile and I bet you never thought about
9:55money like that before
10:05so once you've established a healthy
10:07inner relationship to money then you can
10:09rebuild that relationship
10:11externally and you'll do that anyway
10:13because we recreate our inner reality on
10:16the external plane it just happens that
10:19way and this is why changing your
10:21beliefs and your views at a deep Core
10:24Physical level is what changes
10:26everything you change the way you're
10:28imprinting your your DNA and then you
10:31build a new life from the ground up and
10:33what do you think that new life might
10:35look like that's another thing worthy of
10:39contemplation I have a teaching it's
10:41called The
10:42Pearl and it's all about this theme of
10:45changing your inner relationship to
10:47money it's about finding Prosperity
10:50through
10:51Simplicity you see Prosperity requires
10:56Simplicity because Prosperity is not the
10:58same as wealth
11:00wealth Is topheavy wealth creates an
11:03imbalance too much money makes you worry
11:06again it makes your life more complex
11:09unless you give it away because then you
11:12buy more stuff you just do and then you
11:15have to manage all that stuff so
11:17prosperity it's like the water level
11:19inside your body if you don't drink
11:21enough then you're thirsty and your body
11:25doesn't operate properly but if you
11:26drink too much
11:29then your body becomes bloated and other
11:31problems arise so the body has a perfect
11:34level of water it needs to run at
11:37maximum efficiency and money's like that
11:40each person has to have the correct
11:42amount moving in and out of their life
11:45as a flow and when you find that flow
11:48your worries are all over but most
11:51people never find that flow and that
11:54flow is unique to each person and it's
11:57deeply connected to our breath
12:00so we have to learn to pause to breathe
12:03to relax and then we connect to that
12:09flow in my teaching from the Pearl I
12:12write about Prosperity from the angle of
12:14the great myths in particular I found
12:17myself contemplating the great myth of
12:20the Holy Grail one of my favorites and
12:22the Grail myth is a rich composite of um
12:26pre-christian and Celtic myths and tales
12:30Amalgamated over the Millennia with
12:32Christian Gnostic Mysteries so it's
12:35ancient and it's Unique and it's
12:37particularly unique because it's a myth
12:39of
12:40reconciliation rather than a traditional
12:42myth of redemption I'm going to read you
12:45a a short passage from
12:50that in the myth The Grail itself
12:53represents the possibility of wholeness
12:56and healing although it's been unable to
12:58fully heal the King's wound despite its
13:01power the great turning point in the
13:03Grail myth comes when the young persal
13:05approaches the wounded King and asks a
13:07very simple and very courageous question
13:10how can I serve the Grail and this
13:13question is mythically encoded in the
13:16fabric of every human being and it
13:17sleeps in our DNA instead of using the
13:21Grail to bring about his own wholeness
13:23peral performs the greatest act of
13:26selflessness wisdom and
13:28generosity the question is wise because
13:30persal has realized that his own healing
13:32is intimately linked to the healing of
13:34the whole and the reason that this myth
13:36is so relevant to our contemporary
13:38culture is because of one word
13:41generosity by offering to serve the
13:43whole persal has transcended the need
13:46for divine intervention he's even
13:48sidestepped the need for transformation
13:51he's realized that the opposing forces
13:54of nature can only be reconciled through
13:57asking the right question and and then
13:59living the
14:03answer so what does this have to do with
14:05money well it's the myth of our time
14:08because we have to realize that our own
14:10healing and our own fulfillment is tied
14:13up with everyone else's everything in
14:15the universe is entangled at a Quantum
14:18level with everything else so the
14:20deepest question you can answer in your
14:22life is peral's question how can I be of
14:27greatest service to the
14:30whole and if you make this question the
14:33foundation of your life and all your
14:36decisions then your life will take you
14:39on a vast Adventure you'll live your
14:42life not someone else's life you'll live
14:45the highest life as well you'll unlock
14:48what I call your higher life purpose and
14:51this is what Joseph Campbell meant when
14:52he said follow your bliss he didn't say
14:56follow your pleasure he said follow your
14:59bliss because the follow your pleasure
15:02that path leads to misery Bliss is in
15:05another dimension entirely from pleasure
15:08to follow your bliss is to offer your
15:10life in service to something far greater
15:13than you and that's the foundation of
15:16prosperity
15:19generosity and what about money and
15:22spirituality it's a hot
15:24subject money has a bad WP in the
15:26spiritual world it's often seen as as
15:29dirty or unclean it's often seen as a
15:31pollutant or a distraction from the
15:33spiritual path and with good reason the
15:36world is filled with spiritual pimps you
15:39know people pedling spiritual truths and
15:41making a small fortune from it there
15:43have always been such people in the
15:45world you know snake oil salesman and
15:48the world would be kind of boring
15:50without all those colorful characters
15:53they give us a good test as well because
15:55some of them actually have great and
15:57wise teachings but their integrity might
16:00not be quite in the right place and you
16:02know being a spiritual teacher or a
16:03spiritual leader it's not that different
16:05from being a politician really you know
16:08you may get into it for one reason but
16:10then over time it changes you success
16:13can change you so the false prophets
16:15also serve a great purpose they test our
16:19discernment but they also often lead us
16:22to make a big mistake I call this the
16:25spiritual mistake and the spiritual
16:28mistake as far as money is concerned is
16:30the belief that spirituality and money
16:33can't go
16:34together and we get this from the
16:36religions that's face it you know the
16:39religious traditions because you don't
16:41have to pay to go to church or to do a
16:43religious training and because of that
16:45we assume that all the spiritual
16:47teachings ought to be free but these big
16:49religions actually they're not free you
16:52know that money has to come from
16:54somewhere to pay for all that either
16:56from Rich benefactors or big major
16:58investment ments or property or whatever
17:00it is you know the big religions are
17:02rich but they also offer a homogenized
17:06version of spirituality they're the
17:08monopolies of the spiritual world but
17:11then you also have the spiritual
17:13entrepreneurs people who bring new
17:15streams of spiritual thinking into the
17:17world and they don't have the luxury of
17:19those big investors so they have to
17:21charge for their truth I'm one of these
17:23you know and why shouldn't we why
17:26shouldn't they why is spiritual any
17:29different from any other category of
17:31work why is it different from being a
17:34doctor or a lawyer or a therapist or a
17:37plumber or a
17:39gardener in fact spirituality contains
17:42elements from all those things it'll
17:43show you how to live a healthy life a
17:45life in harmony with the universal laws
17:48it'll also show you how to heal your own
17:50wounds and how to unblock your own inner
17:53drains so why should it live outside
17:56those other categories good question
17:59question see I personally don't believe
18:02that spiritual teachings should be
18:04cheaper than any other products just
18:07because they're spiritual I don't think
18:08that's a healthy belief my point here is
18:12that the spiritual mistake is to
18:14separate Spirit from matter in
18:18fact spirit and matter flow from one
18:21another there's no split other than in
18:23our mind one of the last Century's most
18:26infamous Mystics by bvan rajnish also
18:31known as Osho he said that given the
18:33choice whether he could be enlightened
18:36in a bulock cart or in a Rolls-Royce he
18:38would choose a Rolls-Royce every time
18:41and he did as we some of you know he had
18:44many of them and he liked to use that
18:46kind of humor to shock spiritual people
18:49and he was right there is no split money
18:52itself is neutral only people give it
18:56their charge their opinion their belief
18:59belief there's nothing like money to
19:01show up a spiritual person you know it
19:04brings up the spiritual agenda in almost
19:07anyone in that sense money is a it's a
19:10great leveler it really tests your
19:13Clarity and in the New Age there's a
19:15great deal of wooliness around money
19:18spiritual people aren't generally
19:19comfortable discussing it business
19:22people are are generally much clearer
19:24and cleaner around Financial issues they
19:26they tend not to carry the guilt around
19:28around it you know money is simply what
19:31it is and they wish to increase it for
19:34their own reasons their own benefit and
19:37spiritual people also would like to
19:39increase it for their own reasons but
19:41often we're not honest about this so
19:44it's important to be super clean and
19:47super clear around money since it brings
19:50up issues so
19:57quickly you know you can use the art of
20:00contemplation to open up the flow of
20:03money in your life but there's nothing
20:06mystical about this it's entirely
20:09practical you have to analyze your time
20:13how much time do you spend with your
20:14family how much time do you spend with
20:17your friends how much time do you spend
20:19working how much time do you spend doing
20:22the things you love a thorough and
20:24honest analysis of the way you spend
20:27your time will reveal so much to you
20:30that is of value it will show you your
20:32unconscious relationship to
20:35money I'm going to read you one of my
20:37favorite poems by Mary Oliver marvelous
20:39woman
20:42American the summer day it's
20:46called who made the world who made the
20:49Swan and the black bear who made the
20:52grasshopper this grasshopper I mean the
20:55one who has flung herself out of the
20:57grass the one who's eating sugar out of
20:59my hand who is moving her Jaws back and
21:02forth instead of up and down who is
21:05gazing around with her enormous
21:07complicated
21:08eyes now she lifts her pale forearms and
21:11thoroughly washes her face now she snaps
21:15Her Wings open and floats
21:17away I don't know exactly what a prayer
21:20is I do know how to pay attention how to
21:23fall down into the grass how to kneel
21:25down in the grass how to be idle and
21:28bless blessed how to stroll through the
21:30fields which is what I've been doing all
21:33day tell me what else should I have done
21:37doesn't everything die at last and too
21:39soon tell me what is it you plan to do
21:43with your one wild and precious
21:48life what is it you plan to do with your
21:53one wild and precious life
22:03and this deep question as you allow it
22:06into your interior being it will change
22:09you it will make you value your time
22:13more it'll bring a
22:15focus on that which is essential to your
22:18life we are all involved in so much that
22:22is
22:23inessential so much of our precious time
22:25is just thrown away so claim your time
22:29back and claim the money that you need
22:32if you have a product that you've put
22:33your heart and soul into then charge
22:36what it's worth it's good to be generous
22:39but you also need to be generous with
22:42yourself so many spiritual people I know
22:45secretly play the
22:48lottery it's true it's hilarious kind of
22:52secretly you know they're caught in the
22:54hope and there's nothing at all wrong
22:56with that it's absolutely Ely human but
22:59Hope and Faith it's not enough we have
23:02to bridge the imaginary split that we
23:05feel inside you have the spiritual
23:07people on one side wanting to change the
23:10world for the better but without the
23:11money to do it and then you have the
23:13material people on the other side
23:14unfulfilled but with all the
23:16money that's the world we live in so the
23:20next phase of our evolution is to bring
23:23the two hemispheres of the world brain
23:27together if you're drawn to spiritual
23:30things then your greatest lesson and
23:33your greatest challenge is probably to
23:36learn about material
23:38things you're here to learn how to make
23:43money listen to this ancient invocation
23:46it's from the ti upanishad very Ancient
23:52Ancient piece of writing an
23:55invocation may I become Fain famous may
24:00I become richer than the richest so that
24:03I may serve you better Sweet Lord may I
24:06enter into you may I may you enter into
24:09me may I merge with your thousands of
24:11shapes for my purification as water
24:14flows downward as the months mingle with
24:17the Year may students come to me from
24:19everywhere so that I may serve you
24:22better Sweet
24:23Lord isn't that lovely may I be richer
24:26than the richest so I may serve you
24:29sweet Lord doesn't that sound in in a
24:32way like a big ego but I tell you it
24:34isn't if it's chanted without guilt or
24:37fear or Pride if it's chanted with joy
24:40and Delight it's authentic it's an
24:43authentic human voice the real danger is
24:46the spiritual arrogance that accuses
24:49others of being egoistic
24:52egotistic because they wish to make
24:54money there's a great joy in earning
24:57your own money it's one of the most
24:59empowering things a human being can
25:02do and at the same time it's good to be
25:06wary of your own success because success
25:10leads very quickly to decline that's the
25:13pendulum of Life at work and this is one
25:16of the great teachings of the Chinese
25:18iching which I base my teaching of the
25:21jinkies on so be careful if you achieve
25:24material success enjoy what you need
25:27from it but if you have excess quickly
25:30Give It Away siphon it somewhere share
25:33it with others or it will come back and
25:36bite you this is natural wisdom life has
25:41its Cycles cycles of success cycles of
25:44Decline and it's all a game the
25:48businessman and the businesswoman they
25:50know it's a game the spiritual person in
25:53another level they know it's a game and
25:56we have to learn to trust in the flow
25:58that's beyond our reach this is what the
26:00Buddhists sometimes refer to as the
26:03Dharma the flow of Destiny the passage
26:07of Truth as it moves through all our
26:10lives and we must learn to trust in the
26:12deeper pattern that deeper pattern
26:15behind our lives and the more we
26:16remember that the more we flow with that
26:20and the more often we pause and the more
26:23time we spend with the
26:25grasshopper and then the less divided we
26:28feel feel and the more connected we
26:32feel and I'm talking about you know I'm
26:37really talking to the affluent here in
26:39this video you know because everyone
26:41watching this you're affluent you know
26:43whether you think you are or not you are
26:46you know the reality is
26:49that you know there's there are people
26:52in the world for whom this is not
26:55relevant actually because they are on
26:57survival in the third world they are
26:59just purely trying to eek out a living
27:03and feed themselves and feed their
27:05families and they need our help
27:07absolutely and so if you're going to
27:09earn money perhaps you might want to
27:11think about finding a way to help those
27:15less fortunate than
27:16yourselves but for the rest of us you
27:19know we really are already prospering
27:22and it's important to really see that
27:24there's always someone in a more
27:26difficult more challenging fin Financial
27:28State than you
27:30are and that's a really critical thing
27:33you know money is essential in order for
27:36some people to survive for everyone to
27:38survive really but um we in the west you
27:42know it's a it's a different game for us
27:44because we really do have
27:46enough um one of the things I was
27:49thinking about recently is the inner
27:52light that's inside us because when we
27:55seek for money when we follow that
27:58impetus that out into the world I want
28:00to make more money I need more money
28:02then I'll be able to do this then I'll
28:04be able to do that you know we're
28:06actually seeking something else we're
28:08not really looking for money we're
28:10looking for the light we're looking for
28:12the light of our inner Consciousness
28:14because that is the only thing that will
28:17fulfill us completely and utterly and
28:21that's inside us it's inside you right
28:24now it's like sickness you know
28:28when you're ill you've after a few days
28:31of really being sick you forget what
28:34it's like to feel well you forget Health
28:37you forget that feeling of oh this is
28:41wonderful of Life of
28:43breath and it's the same with us around
28:46money and our lives what we've done is
28:49we Chase all these things in the outside
28:52world and we've forgotten that there's
28:55something so precious hiding inside us
28:59there's a state of consciousness inside
29:01your heart inside your
29:04body that is so pervasive that is so
29:08fulfilling self
29:10fulfilling that is so at
29:14peace that you don't need anything else
29:17at all from life when you touch
29:21that and so when we go out into the
29:23world and we Chase things like
29:26money really it's a distraction from
29:30that that which I
29:33am and that's the real
29:36key to
29:39remember so use the art of contemplation
29:44to make your inner peace with money and
29:48let it be a clean energy in your life
29:51let it be a means to breathe more deeply
29:54rather than a a slave driver that robs
29:57you you of Your vitality and your
30:01breath and let money be your creative
30:06Muse you know enjoy making it take
30:09pleasure from earning it enjoy
30:12negotiating enjoy spending when needed
30:16but be careful about
30:18accumulation be careful about
30:20accumulating more and more
30:23stuff enjoy simplifying your life and
30:26your thinking around
30:28money figure out what's essential in
30:31your life and make time for
30:35that it probably doesn't even require
30:38very much
30:40money but above all let money bring you
30:45closer to the heart of your life let it
30:47be a means for you to find that inner
30:51Freedom that inner Place hold on to it
30:54lightly give of it
30:56generously and let it increase the light
30:59in your
31:01life you may never have thought of money
31:04in this way but I tell you in the modern
31:06world money can become a great teacher
31:11and it can even assist you on the path
31:13to
31:16Liberation
31:18so those are some of
31:21my musings about money
31:25today um
31:29I hope that it's been of inspiration to
31:32you and uh I hope that you'll follow
31:35your contemplation on money out
31:37into in inside yourself and then see
31:41what insights that brings you and how
31:44that can actually lead instead of to
31:47more worry it can actually lead to more
31:50peace because that's what this is all
31:53really really about being here in this
31:56material world
