Spider-Man: Brand New Day Review - This is PERFECTION — Transcript

- 0:00Spider-Man: Brand New Day one of my most
- 0:02anticipated Spider-Man projects of all
- 0:04time. The marketing was absolutely
- 0:06incredible and everything for this film
- 0:08in terms of what it was setting up and
- 0:10kind of readjusting for the MCU version
- 0:12of Peter Parker. A Peter Parker that
- 0:14I've actually kind of liked and overall
- 0:16really enjoyed Tom Holland's version of
- 0:18it. Even that original trilogy for all
- 0:20the quips and all the issues I had by
- 0:22the end of No Way Home, I felt that that
- 0:24was actually the main story line for
- 0:27what they gave. And the way that I view
- 0:28this Peter Parker is that he is just
- 0:30different. It's a different Spider-Man
- 0:32story that we've ever been told. And
- 0:34that was his origin story. And now we're
- 0:36fleshed into the Spider-Man that many of
- 0:38us have wanted him to be. Depressed,
- 0:41sad, and dealing with a lot of [ __ ]
- 0:43And with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, we
- 0:46are here. And I'm here to tell you that
- 0:48we have not gotten a Spider-Man live
- 0:50action film this good since Sam Ramy
- 0:53Spider-Man 2. Let's talk about it.
- 0:55What's growd? Welcome back to a
- 0:56non-spoiler review for Spider-Man Brand
- 0:58New Day. Of course, we're going to be
- 1:00doing a lot of videos this week, whether
- 1:01it's shorts in terms of spoilers,
- 1:03talking about certain postredit scenes,
- 1:05what that could mean, or even MCU
- 1:07rankings and Spider-Man rankings. That's
- 1:09all coming down the pipeline. We're
- 1:10talking brand new day right now. And I
- 1:12will just tell you right now, I am
- 1:14literally kind of low-key shaking by how
- 1:16much I freaking love this movie. I
- 1:18cannot wait to see this movie again. I
- 1:19cannot wait to experience this movie
- 1:21again. this is a Spider-Man movie that
- 1:23I've been wanting to see. And something
- 1:25that Holland has said in a lot of the
- 1:27press is that yeah, I went and looked at
- 1:28like what the fans wanted. And I
- 1:30absolutely believe that to so many
- 1:32different degrees, not in terms of just
- 1:34Spider-Man, but in terms of what he
- 1:35wants to see in the MCU. Certain
- 1:37explanations, certain jokes, and just
- 1:39little things that kind of go towards
- 1:40this movie. But mainly in full and
- 1:42foremost, what I really want to say is
- 1:44that this is a Spider-Man movie. Yes,
- 1:47there are little things that go into the
- 1:49MCU and interconnected thing, but like
- 1:50it it is such a side thing to that that
- 1:53we'll discuss more in my like mixed and
- 1:55cons that Spider-Man brand new day just
- 1:58genuinely like is such a street level
- 2:01Spider-Man movie. And again, people will
- 2:03be like, "It can't be that street level
- 2:05with the Hulk and, you know, with
- 2:06certain other things I've seen in the
- 2:08trailer." Listen, I think this is as
- 2:10street level as you can make it. And
- 2:12what I love about it is that this is
- 2:14more of a personal journey for Peter
- 2:15than anything else. and all the other
- 2:17characters that you see intertwined
- 2:19inside the story, Sadie Sinks, the
- 2:21Punisher, and specifically Hulk, all of
- 2:24those characters have very meaningful
- 2:27stuff to give to Peter himself and
- 2:30specifically all tie into the thematical
- 2:32avenue of what this story very much
- 2:34wants you to feel. And it is a tragic
- 2:37but poetic odyssey about depression,
- 2:40about feeling alone, about feeling like
- 2:42you should be alone, and maybe figuring
- 2:44out that, hey, that's not the best way
- 2:46to go about things. And the same thing
- 2:48as I just mentioned all those
- 2:49characters. I was flabbergasted as well
- 2:52as how they used MJ and Ned. It's
- 2:54perfect. And I didn't want them in this
- 2:56movie initially. I said that is a
- 2:57terrible choice. Bring them back in the
- 2:59fifth one, the sixth movie. I do not
- 3:01need them in this fourth film. But it
- 3:03was a perfect choice. and I love that
- 3:05they brought them back. If you don't
- 3:06know what Brand New Day is about, it's
- 3:08about a forgotten Peter Parker who lives
- 3:09alone as a full-time Spider-Man until
- 3:11mounting pressure triggers a dangerous
- 3:13change in a powerful new enemy now
- 3:15emerges. Now, if you don't know that
- 3:16this movie is directed by Daniel Destin,
- 3:18who's done incredible work inside the
- 3:20indie job, but the last film he directed
- 3:22before this was Shani and I loved Shani.
- 3:26But what I will say is about Shani is
- 3:28that it felt MCUi. It definitely felt
- 3:31like it was a piece of the MCU in terms
- 3:33of some humor, in terms of themes, and
- 3:34what I was very much taken back by Brand
- 3:36New Day. While it still has some of that
- 3:38stuff, it felt like, and I hate to say
- 3:41this, it felt like a movie. It It
- 3:43genuinely felt like a movie, and it kind
- 3:44of has felt what Kevin Feige has done
- 3:46now in the last two projects alone for
- 3:48the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that
- 3:50was Thunderbolt, and that was Fantastic
- 3:524. All having elements of the MCU, but
- 3:55for the most part, feeling like the
- 3:56creators vision. And Brand New Day
- 3:59continues that trend that I am loving.
- 4:01And you can very much feel that Kevin
- 4:03Feige has kind of whipped around and
- 4:04done a complete 360 on terms of what he
- 4:07wants to do with this franchise. And
- 4:08that kind of goes towards the look of
- 4:10the movie, the way that it feels. Seeing
- 4:12Peter suit and like the wrinkles and
- 4:13everything really does add an aesthetic
- 4:16that I don't think we've felt in a long
- 4:19time with a live action Spider-Man
- 4:20movie. And it all ties in and really
- 4:22brings to life not just the action
- 4:24sequences but specifically the personal
- 4:26thematical avenues that Peter Parker
- 4:28does. And Destin Daniel [ __ ] should
- 4:30direct the entire next trilogy of
- 4:32Spider-Man. Sorry Shani fans. I truly
- 4:34believe that. I don't know if he will
- 4:36continue since the guy seems freaking
- 4:37busy doing an Naruto film next. Maybe
- 4:40Shani 2 next. I'll just say I don't know
- 4:42what he does next, but if he can do the
- 4:44next Spider-Man movie, I would
- 4:46absolutely adore it. If not, you do need
- 4:48to bring in someone with a personal
- 4:49vision just like he did. And that
- 4:52doesn't slight John Watts. I think John
- 4:53Watts was literally hired to do what he
- 4:55needed to do. And in a lot of ways, I
- 4:58felt that, as I mentioned earlier in
- 4:59this review, this is Tom Holland's
- 5:01passion project. This is the film that I
- 5:02think he's wanted to do with Spider-Man
- 5:04for quite a bit. And you can feel it
- 5:06from so many different avenues to the
- 5:08point that even sometimes it feels like
- 5:09a lot. But even on retrospect, I look at
- 5:12that a lot feeling and I'm like, I kind
- 5:14of love it. Before I dive into like more
- 5:16of the story as much as I can be with
- 5:18having to be as vague as possible, I do
- 5:20want to mention the performances and
- 5:21really touch in on those. Tom Holland
- 5:22has never been better as Peter Parker. I
- 5:24think this is the best that we've ever
- 5:25seen him as Peter Parker as this
- 5:27character and I absolutely loved him in
- 5:29this. I think he just gets better with
- 5:30every single performance and role and I
- 5:33can't wait to see what he does next in
- 5:34this role. Adding in the same thing with
- 5:36Zenaia. Now, I've really said up close
- 5:39and personal that I did not want MJ in
- 5:41this movie. I've liked Zena on this
- 5:43role, but I really think we needed to
- 5:44take a side step from that. And I'll
- 5:46tell you right now, she was fantastic in
- 5:47this movie. There is one scene h two
- 5:49scenes in particular that are absolutely
- 5:52immaculate that very much tone into the
- 5:55entire theme of the messaging and
- 5:57everything around there. And same thing
- 5:59goes for John Bernnell's The Punisher.
- 6:01There are a couple moments in here,
- 6:02while more fun Punisher, I would say,
- 6:05there are certain elements in here that
- 6:07I think just fit personally for where
- 6:08Frank is. And I'm curious to see some of
- 6:10the in between that happens after the
- 6:12last short and specifically Daredel that
- 6:14we seen him in. And from here on out now
- 6:16a battle on his net is also always
- 6:18great. Isaken who of course a lot of us
- 6:20love from the bear I will also give is
- 6:22fantastic in this and I love love love
- 6:24what they do with detective dwolf. Al
- 6:27Tilman. What can I say? He is so great.
- 6:29If you love him severance you're
- 6:30probably going to love him here. Great
- 6:30to see Mark Ruffalo back as well and of
- 6:32course the trailers have said this. He
- 6:34does come back into that raging Hulk and
- 6:36it was fantastic. I would have liked a
- 6:39little bit more of him, but again, I
- 6:40think they used Hulk and Bruce Banner to
- 6:42a perfect degree. Yes, before I talk
- 6:45about Sadie Sync, I do want to give a
- 6:46shout out to like Michael Mando, Marvin
- 6:48Jones III, and of course, all the
- 6:50Spider-Man villains that have been shown
- 6:52in the trailer. There is not a lot of
- 6:54them. There is not a lot of them, but it
- 6:56was really great to see them in here.
- 6:57And I think they add an aesthetic to
- 6:58what Spider-Man has been doing in this
- 7:00world. And especially Michael Mando, it
- 7:02was so awesome to see him as Scorpion. I
- 7:04really wish he was in here a little bit
- 7:05more, but that's more from a fan
- 7:07perspective than anything else because I
- 7:08don't think it would have added anything
- 7:09to the story. And also, to be completely
- 7:12frank, I don't think it was needed. It's
- 7:13just more of something I would want as a
- 7:15fan. And then this brings me to Satie
- 7:16Synync, which I will not touch on more
- 7:18than just saying I think she may steal
- 7:20the entire third act of this film. She
- 7:22is absolutely incredible in this movie,
- 7:25and I love, love, love the usage of her
- 7:28and the character she plays. I think
- 7:30this is where it kind of perfectly segus
- 7:32me into the usage of all these
- 7:34characters and I think what Dustin does
- 7:36so great as a director and that is
- 7:38mainly making sure that these characters
- 7:40serve the purpose of the story and
- 7:42especially our main hero Peter Parker.
- 7:45When you watch this movie you very much
- 7:46feel that each and every one of these
- 7:48characters the issues that they go to
- 7:49the discussions that they have with
- 7:50Peter they all lead into his own
- 7:52personal arc. And that is for me
- 7:55personally the best thing about this
- 7:56film is the way that it leads into that
- 7:58odyssey, that poeticness of feeling
- 8:01depressed, feeling grief, feeling just
- 8:03sad in general. And also, I think we've
- 8:06all been there is that sometimes we feel
- 8:07that maybe it's just better to be alone.
- 8:09I know I've definitely felt there. And I
- 8:11think as a Spider-Man story, it's
- 8:13perfect to feel what it actually
- 8:14delivers there. Genuinely enough, it is
- 8:16that story. It's those thematics that I
- 8:18think is what carries this movie such to
- 8:20a higher degree than I ever expected it
- 8:22to be. This movie doesn't further the
- 8:24MCU. It adds little sprinkles of course
- 8:26with the Hulk and maybe the Punisher and
- 8:28you can add certain things to that. And
- 8:30Sing's character, while again I can't
- 8:32say anything. You can imagine that with
- 8:34all the secrecy, she probably leads into
- 8:36something that's a little bit more
- 8:38bigger picture. I love all those
- 8:39different things and I love the way that
- 8:41it touches on those and I love that it's
- 8:42kind of just again sprinkled in there.
- 8:44It's nice. It's like, oh, Hulk's back is
- 8:46raging Hulk. How does that tie in? Why
- 8:48isn't he in Doomsday? You find out if
- 8:50it's small scale. And I think what I
- 8:52really love about this is that this
- 8:53movie, and I I know you hear this a lot
- 8:55in comic book movies, but it does this
- 8:57is one of those that feels like it's
- 8:59ripped right off the comic book pages
- 9:01and thrown in front of you. In fact, it
- 9:02kind of feels like a nice oneshot in
- 9:04between one trilogy, next journey we're
- 9:06about to go on with this character. I
- 9:07think some people may not like that
- 9:09because it feels like we're kind of like
- 9:10pressing the reset button and starting
- 9:12that next journey, but I feel like it's
- 9:14actually needed here for the first hour
- 9:15where I felt like the film was broken
- 9:17into three different acts. one act
- 9:19particularly the first one that really
- 9:21much establishes where's Peter Parker,
- 9:22what has he been doing and what is the
- 9:24story that we're going about here.
- 9:25Second act starts to focus in on and
- 9:27move him a little bit further and then
- 9:28of course the third act finishes up all
- 9:30that nature leading us in to what
- 9:32chapter we need to see on him next. This
- 9:34is the film that you need to feel. I
- 9:36feel like you need to feel the weight. I
- 9:37feel like you need to feel the time that
- 9:38has passed since the last time we saw
- 9:40Spider-Man himself in the MCU. Feels and
- 9:43works perfectly, especially coming off
- 9:44No Way Home, which was a fantastic
- 9:46conclusion to that trilogy. big. It was
- 9:48bombastic. And I kind of like that this
- 9:50film still stayed in that style in terms
- 9:52of action, but when it came down the
- 9:54story, it was pretty low-key. And that's
- 9:56where I want to talk about it is that
- 9:57this does feel pretty damn street level.
- 10:00What I've been wanting to see from a
- 10:01Spider-Man film is that street level
- 10:03nature because you can make it big in
- 10:05certain regards and make it big in
- 10:06certain reveals, but you can also keep
- 10:08it very honed in on the character. And I
- 10:10feel like that's something that as small
- 10:12scale as some of the stuff in the last
- 10:14films, it always felt like it was always
- 10:15worldending nature. dramatics. And in
- 10:18this movie, I'll say I don't feel like
- 10:20the threat was worldending dramatic
- 10:23natures. It very much was more of a
- 10:25personal piece about Peter Parker. Even
- 10:27to the way that the film ends and it
- 10:28goes through the end credits, like it
- 10:30feels different. And I really loved what
- 10:32Kevin Feige let him do here. Goes again
- 10:34back to Destin Daniel [ __ ] who does an
- 10:36incredible job as the director here. He
- 10:39has a singular vision for this
- 10:40character. He absolutely feels
- 10:42passionate about the same thing with Tom
- 10:43Holland as this feeling like his passion
- 10:45project. That also goes in terms of the
- 10:47designs and what they want to do.
- 10:48Whether you're looking at the suit that
- 10:50completely looks like it's a love letter
- 10:52from the some of the best the Holland
- 10:53suit to of course some of the best from
- 10:55Andrew Garfield and Tobey Magcguire
- 10:56suit. Feeling like a love letter to
- 10:58those suit and this may be my favorite
- 11:00Spider-Man suit of all time now. I'm
- 11:01absolutely obsessed with it. Love the
- 11:03colors and again I mentioned earlier I
- 11:05love the wrinkles and I love how that
- 11:06all adds to every single one of the
- 11:08action set pieces delivered here. set
- 11:10pieces to just be straightforward are
- 11:12the best that we've ever had inside the
- 11:14Spider-Man live action films. They're
- 11:16better than anything in the Remy movies.
- 11:17And I genuinely think they topped the
- 11:19webs slinging from Amazing Spider-Man 2,
- 11:21which may be a hot take because I do
- 11:23think that is some of the best, but you
- 11:24can definitely tell that there is
- 11:25inspiration taken from each and every
- 11:27one of those films as well as the
- 11:28Holland films as well as the MCU films,
- 11:30but at the same point in time making it
- 11:32feel fresh and making it feel different
- 11:34because we can play around with all
- 11:35these different characters, the Hulk,
- 11:37the Punisher, and Scorpion and others.
- 11:39All those action set pieces, every
- 11:41single thing that you even get to see.
- 11:42Even the hand, the way that they use the
- 11:43hand was awesome. just was a nice like
- 11:46little blurb and it's there. But again,
- 11:47the action set piece you see in the
- 11:49trailer is absolutely incredible. The
- 11:50way that it builds up to that, the way
- 11:52that it intersects and you can
- 11:53definitely tell that one of the main
- 11:54plans, one of the main main stakes of
- 11:56all this was Insomniac Spider-Man, the
- 11:58PlayStation game, which is also
- 12:00fantastic. In usage that they kind of
- 12:02take inspiration from so many different
- 12:03mediums, whether it's the comics, the
- 12:05other movies, the video games, you can
- 12:07tell that this is a love letter to
- 12:09Spider-Man fans and what they've been
- 12:11wanting to see from a Spider-Man movie
- 12:13for a while. And for me, that's where
- 12:15this film goes above and beyond in all
- 12:17those aspects. I'm sitting here talking
- 12:19about in my review, the more I actually
- 12:20[ __ ] love this movie, the more I can
- 12:22sit here and tell you that damn, this
- 12:24may be actually one of my favorite MCU
- 12:25films. In fact, holy crap, it might be
- 12:27delivered everything that I've wanted
- 12:29from a Spider-Man movie. And I really am
- 12:30sitting here flabbergasted by the tone
- 12:32and the way that it feels different.
- 12:34Talking about my mixed and my cons,
- 12:36there is one sequence in this movie that
- 12:39I feel like personally was not needed
- 12:41for the film. It is the most MCU scene
- 12:45in the film. You'll know exactly what
- 12:47I'm talking about. I cannot say what it
- 12:49is, but if you've seen the film or when
- 12:51you watch the film, you will know
- 12:52exactly what I'm talking about. This
- 12:53scene was not needed. It was cool. Sure,
- 12:55it was nice, but it felt so different in
- 12:57terms of tone and even in terms of
- 12:59humor. And it felt like we were going
- 13:00back more towards uh the last trilogy in
- 13:02terms of all that. And that for me was
- 13:04the most glaring thing in there. I don't
- 13:07even know why it was in there because I
- 13:09feel like a rewrite would have easily
- 13:10been able to get rid of there. In fact,
- 13:12there was another I want to say
- 13:14character that was recently just
- 13:15announced that was cut from the film
- 13:17that I felt like that should have been
- 13:19in here. I felt like that would have
- 13:20been more logical to have here. But that
- 13:22is maybe the one thing and it's like
- 13:24less than a 5minute scene that kind of
- 13:26just like comes in and goes out and then
- 13:28once it's done that's it. Now maybe in
- 13:31the future I may change my mind about
- 13:32that in terms of it like goes towards
- 13:34anything bigger or more massive for the
- 13:35character, but it just felt weird if I'm
- 13:38being honest with you all. Whereas like
- 13:40every other MCU connection I literally
- 13:42had no issues with. I had nothing no
- 13:44problems with nothing to that. And this
- 13:46was the only one that always just like
- 13:48kind of felt like it halted the pacing.
- 13:50Uh exactly. Even though it's like right
- 13:52at the start, which to speak about the
- 13:53pacing I thought was pretty damn good.
- 13:55Two and a half hours fly by for this
- 13:57film. And yeah, that's just another pro.
- 13:59My only issue with the movie and it's
- 14:01like literally more of a nitpick that on
- 14:02a rewatch I could see just kind of like
- 14:04shading away and leaving. Before I get
- 14:06to my final thoughts, there is one
- 14:07postredit scene. It's all the way at the
- 14:10end. I will say I h I have theories for
- 14:14it, but it is very small scale. It is
- 14:16very small in terms of what it shows and
- 14:19it's more of leaving up to questions if
- 14:22anything else and may lead into the next
- 14:24film. You'll understand when you see it.
- 14:25Yeah, this is everything I hoped it
- 14:27would be. A tragic yet poetic odyssey
- 14:29about what it truly means to feel alone,
- 14:31only to realize you may not have to be
- 14:33alone. It's thematically beautiful while
- 14:35still delivering an endlessly
- 14:36entertaining Spider-Man adventure that
- 14:38never feels oversted. Nearly every
- 14:40character serves Peter Parker's journey,
- 14:43making every moment feel purposeful. Tom
- 14:46Holland gives the best performance as
- 14:47Peter, but somehow Sadie Sync might just
- 14:49steal the entire film. Easily the best
- 14:50action and websing I've ever seen on
- 14:52Spider-Man live action film. It delivers
- 14:54everything that you expected from the
- 14:56trailers and more. And I absolutely love
- 14:58this film. Besides my nitpick, I I'm
