- 0:00SPIDER-MAN'S
- 0:01back in a fourth film, finally.
- 0:03Technically speaking, Toby, Peter two
- 0:06was in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and that
- 0:08was the fourth appearance, but he was
- 0:10still a guest in another Spider-Man's
- 0:12movie, to be honest and fair. But Tom
- 0:14Holland's Spider-Man's back for a brand
- 0:16new day, in a brand new day. It is
- 0:17indeed a brand new day, so let's talk
- 0:19about it.
- 0:20>> [music]
- 0:25>> So Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a new
- 0:27Spider-Man in the Tom Holland Spider-Man
- 0:29continuity. And it does feel like a
- 0:31brand new day. The previous films feel
- 0:33like a very linked trilogy. A trilogy
- 0:36prequel that existed to make Spider-Man
- 0:38Spider-Man in Manhattan. To make him
- 0:41Spider-Man as we know him, and now here
- 0:43we are. It's been a couple years since
- 0:44Doctor Strange and Peter Parker
- 0:46collaborated to brainwash the entire
- 0:48world into forgetting Peter Parker.
- 0:50Doesn't mean he's not still pining for
- 0:52his friends now, though. And he's having
- 0:53some stuff going on with his powers.
- 0:55This movie really does capitalize the
- 0:58word spider and man. Spider, because his
- 1:00powers are going on the fritz because of
- 1:02his emotional state. Man, because
- 1:04everyone thinks he's fine, but he's just
- 1:06suffering the emotional weight in
- 1:08silence. Now that a new threat looms, we
- 1:09have a new Spider-Man movie. How vague
- 1:12is this review going to be? There's a
- 1:14whole thing
- 1:15thing in this movie, otherwise known as
- 1:18the plot of the film, that's wrapped in
- 1:20spoilers, so I can't really talk about
- 1:23it. This is going to be spoiler-free.
- 1:24Spoiler talk video becoming later this
- 1:26week, but until then, here are my very
- 1:29vague Spider-Man thoughts. First of all,
- 1:31right out the gate, Tom Holland is
- 1:32carrying this movie as Peter Parker, as
- 1:34Spider-Man. And he's in the zone, man.
- 1:36He has this down. Every actor has
- 1:39brought their own energy, their own
- 1:40angle, their own thing to the role of
- 1:42Peter Parker. This is a very emotionally
- 1:45weighty
- 1:47Yeah, that works.
- 1:49I'm rolling with it. A story for Peter
- 1:51Parker, and Tom Holland absolutely sells
- 1:54it. It probably helps that he's not
- 1:56going to space, or for the most part
- 1:59dealing with the bigger MCU here. It's
- 2:01very friendly neighborhood Spider-Man
- 2:03here, otherwise known as why people love
- 2:05Spider-Man in the first place. Cuz
- 2:07that's what this film hits home is well,
- 2:09it's Spider-Man's life. It's why people
- 2:11connect with Spider-Man. Because we all
- 2:13know deep down there's a difference
- 2:14between the perception of someone
- 2:17and the private weight they actually do
- 2:19carry in their lives. If you feel like
- 2:21you've seen those moments before in
- 2:22Spider-Man, well, you have. In fact,
- 2:24this movie's very close to the
- 2:26inspiration of Raimi's Spider-Man.
- 2:27Spider-Man feels a certain way, his
- 2:29body's manifesting those feelings
- 2:31physically. When he has questions, he
- 2:33goes and talks to an iconic professor of
- 2:35the world. Well, in Spider-Man 2, I
- 2:36guess he went to a random doctor, but
- 2:39later in Spider-Man 3, he went to Dr.
- 2:40Connors. This time around, Bruce Banner.
- 2:43This movie does run into
- 2:45are these characters in it for a point
- 2:48or are they in it specifically in this
- 2:50case so the Hulk can be in here? Little
- 2:52of both, definitely that second one. The
- 2:53first act to the first half of this
- 2:56movie, you can argue the entire movie is
- 2:58this, but for me it was the first half
- 3:00or so is the most Spider-Man feeling
- 3:03Spider-Man film since Raimi's Spider-Man
- 3:052. You got villains out there in
- 3:07costumes. There's no real explanation as
- 3:09to how they have their costumes or their
- 3:11outfits. They're just they're out there.
- 3:12I think that's an advantage that the
- 3:14MCU's given Spider-Man. Also, the PS4
- 3:17game. Time was, cinematically speaking,
- 3:20you couldn't have a Spider-Man villain
- 3:22just have their costume and be the
- 3:24villain without a good explanation as to
- 3:26how. Granted, Michael Mando was the
- 3:28character in Spider-Man Homecoming, but
- 3:30he wasn't Scorpion yet. Now he's
- 3:32Scorpion, he has the tail, he has the
- 3:33suit. Don't ask how. Don't question it,
- 3:36just go with it. But you do go with it.
- 3:38He's not in the movie that much. He is
- 3:39in the movie far more than Tombstone is.
- 3:42You know what really did work for me in
- 3:43here? Frank Castle and Spider-Man.
- 3:47Dude, they got great chemistry. That is
- 3:49to say, Jon Bernthal and Tom Holland
- 3:51have great chemistry. It felt like kind
- 3:53of a comic book buddy dynamic at a point
- 3:56and it works because Frank Castle and
- 3:58Peter Parker have a very different
- 4:00perspective
- 4:01and ideology about criminal and how we
- 4:04deal with them. That works. And as much
- 4:06as there are characters in this movie
- 4:07that aren't in the movie as much as I
- 4:08thought they would be, Frank Castle's
- 4:10actually in the movie more than I
- 4:12thought he'd be and I'm glad he was. It
- 4:14can be that the characters work because
- 4:16the characters don't feel that they work
- 4:19and that friction is what makes them
- 4:20work. Yeah, they were great. Give me an
- 4:22entire Frank Castle Spider-Man team-up
- 4:24film in the future. As much as the
- 4:26emotional moments as there's a lot of
- 4:28emotional strain with Peter Parker and
- 4:30his friends or his friends who don't
- 4:31remember they were his friends, but he
- 4:33does. That's the painful part. As much
- 4:35as that does lead to some emotional
- 4:37moments that do hit, I do feel
- 4:40they probably could have trimmed some of
- 4:41that and made this movie closer to 2
- 4:44hours. 2 hours 25 minutes
- 4:47probably didn't need to be that long.
- 4:48There is a post-credit scene. Thing is,
- 4:50it's not a mid-credit scene. It's a post
- 4:53very end of the credits credit scene. Is
- 4:56it worth the wait? Not if you want to
- 4:57beat traffic. It does feel like an
- 4:59afterthought. Some of the critics in the
- 5:01auditorium, man, they all but booed I
- 5:03did hear a couple boos. I kind of don't
- 5:05blame them. They could have whipped this
- 5:06thing up yesterday to put in the movie
- 5:08and then sent it out to be on the new
- 5:10digital prints and that's that. And I
- 5:11believe the reference itself, if I'm
- 5:13seeing it correctly, is really cool. But
- 5:16you would be forgiven if you were like,
- 5:17that put the mid in mid-credit scene.
- 5:20Doesn't really make sense cuz it is a
- 5:22post-credit scene. Whatever. As a thing
- 5:24you really do feel in here that I liked
- 5:26is that Spider-Man is this
- 5:28optimistic, hopeful hero in New York
- 5:31that people love. No J. Jonah Jameson in
- 5:34this film. It's just all positive,
- 5:35except for the emotional turmoil he's
- 5:37dealing with, but in terms of the public
- 5:39perception though, some things that
- 5:41didn't really land for me are wrapped up
- 5:44in spoilers.
- 5:45So So, really talk about them right now.
- 5:47But as for right now, I thought
- 5:48Spider-Man: Brand New Day was a fun
- 5:50Spider-Man movie. That vibe of the
- 5:51friendly neighborhood Spider-Man that I
- 5:53feel this movie does re-inject into
- 5:56Spider-Man's world. It's a little too
- 5:57long, but all in all, I had myself a
- 5:59really good time with Spider-Man: Brand
- 6:00New Day and no alcohol required. All
- 6:02right, so Spider-Man: Brand New Day,
- 6:03have you seen it? What did you think
- 6:05about it? You haven't seen it yet, but
- 6:06in a few days, that question won't feel
- 6:08so weird cuz you might have at that
- 6:10point. Or, what's your favorite
- 6:12Spider-Man movie? Or, you can rank them.
- 6:13It's always fun to do. Whatever it is,
- 6:15whatever you think, comment below, let
- 6:16me know. And as always, if you like what
- 6:17you see here and you want to see more,
