- 0:01Why? [music]
- 0:05>> That's right.
- 0:06>> We just watched Spider-Man brand new
- 0:08day. I'm here with John the Flick Pick.
- 0:10This is going to be the review. We've
- 0:12had a little bit to soak in and we've
- 0:14had some discussions, but John, I want
- 0:16to start out with what you thought this
- 0:18movie was going to be walking in.
- 0:20>> Listen,
- 0:21I had a good time. I think this is a
- 0:24good Spider-Man movie. There's some
- 0:26heartfelt moments and more or less this
- 0:29is kind of the Spider-Man I've been
- 0:31waiting for Marvel to give us since we
- 0:33got the introduction of Spider-Man years
- 0:35ago, but I will say I still prefer the
- 0:37last hour Spider-Man: No Way Home over
- 0:40this movie.
- 0:41>> I look, there's a lot this story is
- 0:43trying to do and I feel like it's going
- 0:45in a few different directions at times.
- 0:47Now, what it inevitably commits to, I
- 0:51really enjoyed. I just wish it would
- 0:53have committed to that earlier and some
- 0:55things that we've seen in the trailers,
- 0:57him going through this mutation of
- 0:59sorts. I think I may have been swayed a
- 1:01little more by the coolness than John
- 1:04cuz I mean we again, we're going based
- 1:05off the trailer. We're not going to
- 1:06spoil things in this video, but the Hulk
- 1:09sequence, it is brief,
- 1:12but it is cool, John.
- 1:14>> It's cool.
- 1:15>> It's cool, man.
- 1:16>> It's cool. It's there. I don't know if
- 1:18ultimately it mattered, but it's there.
- 1:21>> Yeah.
- 1:22>> But let's talk about the things that do
- 1:23matter.
- 1:23>> Yeah, man. I look,
- 1:26inevitably you get to the emotional core
- 1:28and we're obviously going off of what we
- 1:30saw in No Way Home and kind of that
- 1:32build up and the let down and the fact
- 1:35that MJ and Ned no longer remember who
- 1:37Peter is. I thought that played out in a
- 1:39way that I, you know, some people are
- 1:41going to see it as repetitive, but I
- 1:43really think we saw some growth from
- 1:45Peter in this movie in the vein
- 1:48of Toby Spider-Man 2.
- 1:50>> Ooh, I did get a little Yeah, you're
- 1:52right. I did get a little bit of that.
- 1:53Yeah, this movie does feel like it's
- 1:55It's by Spider-Man 2, Toby Spider-Man 2.
- 1:58I I'm picking up what you're putting
- 1:59down. The best way to describe this
- 2:01movie is it sort of picks up the pieces
- 2:03of what Spider-Man No Way Home did in
- 2:06that final third act and sort of puts
- 2:08them back together to almost give you a
- 2:10soft reboot of the character Spider-Man
- 2:12without undoing the legacy of what Tom
- 2:14Holland already achieved.
- 2:15>> That's a great way to put it. Yeah, it's
- 2:17almost like those first three films were
- 2:21the precursor to this version of
- 2:24Spider-Man that is kind of a new version
- 2:27of Spider-Man, if you will.
- 2:29>> But a better version.
- 2:30>> A better version. Yes, and I told John
- 2:33walking out of the theater, it's going
- 2:34to be really hard to go back to the CGI
- 2:37rubbery, almost obsolete suits. And and
- 2:41they looked cool in still images, but
- 2:43man, seeing this thing in action as the
- 2:45car goes by, the breathability of the
- 2:49cloth and seeing it move through the air
- 2:51and just seeing him sit on the couch and
- 2:52having a conversation, I'm like, "No,
- 2:54that's an actual guy in a Spider-Man
- 2:56costume instead of CGI, John."
- 2:58>> That's a teenage boy wearing spandex and
- 3:00I quite enjoy it.
- 3:01>> Oh, wow. [laughter]
- 3:02>> This is one of those things, man, I've
- 3:04I've been wanting to see
- 3:07Tom look and feel like the Spider-Man
- 3:10that I grew up with. And I always
- 3:11thought he's captured that from an
- 3:12emotional standpoint, but we really got
- 3:14the marriage of all of those things in
- 3:16this movie.
- 3:16>> They got that digitized filter off of
- 3:18him because even when he's standing
- 3:19around, you can see his earlobes. He's
- 3:21not wearing a mask within a mask anymore
- 3:23and I like those things. And no longer
- 3:25is he Tony Stark Jr. anymore. He feels
- 3:28like Spider-Man.
- 3:29>> What do you think of Destin Daniel
- 3:30Cretton as as the director? Was it an
- 3:32improvement there?
- 3:33>> This film, compared to the other
- 3:35Spider-Man Marvel films, has contrast.
- 3:38>> Oh, yeah.
- 3:38>> It has color grading that doesn't look
- 3:39like it has a concrete filter on it,
- 3:41like this parking garage that we're
- 3:42standing in. And it had depth to it and
- 3:45that's been that's what I've been
- 3:46wanting to see in Marvel films for a
- 3:48very long time. Make it look like a
- 3:49movie and I feel like this is the best
- 3:52representation of that of all the Tom
- 3:54Holland Spider-Man movies. Okay, there's
- 3:55something I liked in this movie, but
- 3:57unfortunately, we can't go too far
- 3:59without spoilers. The antagonist of this
- 4:02film, the main villain, if you will,
- 4:05it's hard to talk about.
- 4:07>> [laughter]
- 4:08>> I thought there were some interesting
- 4:09ideas. I thought the concept worked,
- 4:12but for me, it kind of got a bit
- 4:13repetitive halfway through the film.
- 4:16>> That's fair. I think that's the side of
- 4:17the story that, you know, they're trying
- 4:20to weave, that's a pun, all of these
- 4:22ideas in, and this is something John
- 4:24said walking out. One or two of those
- 4:27big ideas kind of gets lost along the
- 4:29way, and so I think a lack of focus may
- 4:32be my biggest issue here.
- 4:33>> And this is exactly where the movie
- 4:35needed to commit more to.
- 4:37>> Uh-huh.
- 4:37>> Build up the future.
- 4:39>> Yeah.
- 4:40>> Because they're not doing much with the
- 4:41present.
- 4:41>> Ooh, that's Yeah, that's I mean, I would
- 4:44push back a little bit because I do
- 4:45think Peter's
- 4:47story here, like, you see a lot of
- 4:50change within his character in this And
- 4:52again, it is a little repetitive from No
- 4:54Way Home,
- 4:55a bit, but I think he goes through some
- 4:57things here that makes him more of a
- 5:00Spider-Man by the end than he even is in
- 5:02the beginning without spoiling things.
- 5:04>> There is a character arc, he does grow
- 5:06as a Spider-Man, physically and
- 5:08mentally, if you will. But once again,
- 5:11that's one of those other aspects that
- 5:13didn't fully commit, though you do get
- 5:15that cool, upbeat superhero moment where
- 5:18the music score is up, and he's beating
- 5:20all the bad guys up, and I thought that
- 5:21was a great scene in itself. It gave me
- 5:23some of the goosebumps, or the the
- 5:25spider tingles down below, if you will,
- 5:27or whatever. I thought that was awesome.
- 5:29The Punisher.
- 5:30>> Let me tell you something. Odysseus, let
- 5:32me tell you something. Peter Peter
- 5:34Parker Peter Parker No, god damn it. Let
- 5:35me tell you something. Excuse me, Peter.
- 5:36Come on. I'm sorry, Peter. I'M SORRY.
- 5:38IT'S THE SAME THING EVERY TIME.
- 5:39>> MY FAMILY'S DEAD. I'm out.
- 5:40>> [laughter]
- 5:41>> Yeah, I Don't Don't get me wrong, he's
- 5:43cool. He's in the movie. He's a
- 5:45supporting helper alongside Spider-Man.
- 5:48He's fine.
- 5:49He's fine.
- 5:50>> Admittedly, there was a I can't remember
- 5:52if it was a comic or just like a one-off
- 5:54story. There was a story I read with
- 5:55Punisher, Hulk, and Spider-Man as a kid.
- 5:58>> Okay.
- 5:59>> Wasn't this story
- 6:00when they were all on screen at the same
- 6:02time? I got the goosies a bit, John,
- 6:04because I kind of saw some of these
- 6:06panels come into life. And again, you
- 6:08know, the Hulk's in it briefly.
- 6:10Punisher's not a main character, but
- 6:12when you get them all together
- 6:13>> Yeah.
- 6:14>> that was pretty fun. Okay. Child-like
- 6:16wonder, if you will. But again, it was
- 6:18brief.
- 6:18>> Oh, damn, it was a good time. God, it
- 6:20was a
- 6:20>> Uh John, there's there's not a lot we
- 6:22can say because again, we don't want to
- 6:24spoil things. We don't want to give too
- 6:26much away. What are your What are your
- 6:28final What do you say, flicking thoughts
- 6:30on the movie, man?
- 6:31>> Listen, it's a fine time. By all means,
- 6:33grab some popcorn, watch this movie.
- 6:35It's a quality Spider-Man movie. You're
- 6:37going to get Spider-Man doing Spider-Man
- 6:38stuff. But for me, it just felt like the
- 6:41pacing was a little off. And a lot of
- 6:43those big highlighted moments,
- 6:44unfortunately, in between those, I was
- 6:47I wasn't in love with the movie as much
- 6:48as I was hoping I would be. Ultimately,
- 6:50I'm not disappointed. I think this is a
- 6:53fair continuation of the character and
- 6:55it at least propels him in a direction
- 6:56I'm kind of curious to see where he goes
- 6:58next. But ultimately,
- 7:00I I really don't have much more to say
- 7:02about the movie because it didn't give
- 7:04me much more to say.
- 7:05>> That's fair.
- 7:06>> I I I
- 7:08had different expectations going in, not
- 7:10necessarily of the quality, but of the
- 7:11story. I will say the story kind of
- 7:13surprised me. It went in a lot of
- 7:15directions, maybe too many for some. The
- 7:17first 15 minutes I struggled with.
- 7:21Again, we're kind of montaging and
- 7:22highlighting through some things, and
- 7:24that was disappointing. But once it
- 7:26settles in, you get, I think, the best
- 7:29version of Tom Holland's Peter
- 7:31Spider-Man that we have ever seen. He's
- 7:35fighting inner battles, outer battles.
- 7:37Those outer battles battles look
- 7:39incredible, and the inner battles, I
- 7:40think, will tug on some heart strings.
- 7:42It takes a second to come together, but
- 7:44I do believe there is a lot of heart on
- 7:47display, especially by the end, and they
- 7:49make some decisions that
- 7:52kind of shocked me at times.
- 7:54>> Yes, decisions that shock you, but
- 7:56ultimately
- 7:59don't matter.
- 8:01>> [laughter]
- 8:04>> Let me tell you something, Jaby.
- 8:06Let me tell you something.
- 8:07>> Jaby, I got to score this thing. I can't
- 8:09settle on a number yet. I'm going to
- 8:10throw it to you, man. How how are you
- 8:11feeling? What's the final score for you
- 8:14on Brand New Day?
- 8:15>> Liked it, didn't love it. It's a fair
- 8:17Spider-Man movie. I'm going to give
- 8:18Spider-Man Brand New Day
- 8:21>> Ooh. Okay. Yeah, I can I think I
- 8:25I definitely enjoyed it more than you
- 8:26did. I'm between something. I'm going to
- 8:28throw this on the screen and hope you
- 8:30guys But again, it's it's one of those
- 8:32movies where a lot happened, okay?
- 8:35Story-wise, a lot happened, and it's
- 8:38going to take a little bit to kind of
- 8:40soak that in. Uh but if you are looking
- 8:43for fun, which is what a lot of people
- 8:45are looking for.
- 8:46>> when I see a movie, I want fun.
- 8:47>> A lot of people want fun. I do believe
- 8:50this is a really fun time uh if you're a
- 8:53Spider-Man fan. And I think Jon
- 8:54Bernthal, Zendaya, and Tom Hollander are
- 8:56having a great month at the theater, you
- 8:57know what I mean?
- 8:57>> I think I like The Odyssey more.
- 8:59>> Yeah, The Odyssey's better, yeah.
- 9:01>> [laughter]
- 9:01>> Oh, that's going to piss people off. Oh,
- 9:02that's going to piss people off.
